s your next wedding a formal affair? Grooms in search of impeccably tailored tuxes, brides hunting for the dress, and guests just looking to turn some heads might want to hightail it over to Miami’s Design District. That’s where, earlier this month, Dolce & Gabbana unveiled a stunning new boutique. And when I say ‘Dolce & Gabbana,’ I mean Domenico & Stefano: The Italian fashion house’s founders jetted in for the ribbon cutting, as well as a full weekend of festivities that included cocktails with artist Romero Britto, a

fashion show (natch!), and dinner for 120 at Design District visionary Craig Robins’ Miami Beach digs. Believe it or not, the new store — just steps from Balenciaga on the pedestrian-only Paseo Ponti — is totally worthy of all the celebrazioni. Conceived by frequent D&G collaborator Gwenael Nicolas, the 5,400-square-foot boutique was inspired by Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, the world’s most famous opera house, and the program calls for… major drama. The soaring, two-story façade of rippling glass recalls a stage curtain. Behind it, interiors clad floor to ceiling in a lavish mix of polished and raw travertine and Veselve marble are connected by a winding, Minimalist, marble-slab staircase. Gilt-framed Baroque mirrors stand out against clean-lined racks, shelves, and vitrines, all crafted of walnut, glass, and polished steel. But the real attention-getters here are the larger-thanlife classical statues that hold court on the main sales

floor: an assortment of stern busts, reclining nudes, and one Venus de Milo (shopping for a little sleeveless number, perhaps?), each pale figure a veritable cellphone-camera siren. While the D&G store might not be as colorful as the Museum of Ice Cream’s Miami Beach pop-up over on Collins (extended, once again, through May 13), it should prove to be another prime selfie destination. So check it out, for Insta’s sake. Nobody’s gonna force you to buy a pair of D&G slides, even if it would mean acing your next casual beach wedding — and every pool party this summer.

Last Wednesday, Georgie’s Alibi/Monkey Bar, along with Out, Stoli and the Key West Business Guild presented a preliminary to the Stoli Key West Cocktail Classic. The event was hosted by the

outrageous Patrik (National LGBT Ambassador for Stoli) and TP Lords, with additional performances by Latoya London, Athena Dion and Jennifer McClain. There were many contestants, but in the end, the clear winner was the Alibi’s Joshua who killed it, and I am sure will do very well at the Finals in Key West!

Seen there was Director David Cook, Scott Bader, Marco Perez, Peter J Morales (Twist), Bruce and Ben (Creative Male), Miik Martorell (Pride Fort Lauderdale), Dale Stine (Photographer to the stars), Dj Pride, Pussila, and many more.

Afterwards, I went to Steve and Ariel’s (J. Marks) home on South Beach as I was honored to be invited to a house party. AS to protect their privacy I won’t say where they live, but it’s a beautiful condo on the Bay and the views and their home are spectacular. There was also a surprise

Season 10 Mayhem |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

by Scott Holland

E

pisode 5 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 started out with a mini challenge where Ru had the girls drag up the contents of a government issued duffle bag and transform themselves in to an army of fierce drag queens. The winner was Vixen who won the right to pair up the girls for the Maxi challenge which was to appear as crazy guests on the brand new talk show “Bossy Rossy. In the end, Eureka won and was awarded two tickets to see Zumanity including airfare and deluxe hotel accommodations. The bottom two were Monet and Mayhem, who sashayed away.

22 | Hotspots.LGBT

Mayhem

At what age did drag become an interest, and how did you pick your name? I think I was 20 when I first started doing drag, but I first went to a drag show when I was 18 and that's when I knew that I wanted to do this. I got my name from watching Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson's sex tape, and there's a tattoo that says Mayhem on Tommy's ass. How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul's Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you had been chosen? I'd been trying to get on ever since season two, and when I finally got the call it was exciting but quickly turned into an “oh my god situation. I didn't know what was about to happen and what was I going to do. Is there additional pressure now that RuPaul's Drag Race has been on for nine seasons plus three seasons of All Stars? The pressure is there regardless of how many seasons there is. I think that being able to perform at a level that will get you all the way to the end is where the pressure lies. Tell us about your Drag Race experience? My drag race experience, even though short lived, was very fulfilling. What's your marital status? If single, what are you looking for in a man? I'm single and looking for a confident person who is secure in themselves, and who loves the arts. A giving person that has a good job! Who do you want to win and why? I want me to win because I f*cking deserve it! You know, I think it's too early in the game for me to pick someone to

win. I want to see what else the girls have to offer. I haven't settled on anyone yet. What's ahead for Mayhem? Ahead for me is more and more drag. Traveling the world, sharing my talent on different stages, and some film and music.

Episode 6 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 started out with a mini challenge where Ru had the girl blindfolded and they had to identify items by sitting on them. The winner was Asia O'Hara who won a $2,000 hair care package at Art Lab Salon. The Maxi Challenge the 9 remaining conestants had to work in groups of three and present their own “Drag Con” panel, which needed to include a panel discussion, a demonstration and a Q&A segment. On the runway the category was “Hats Incredible.” Eureka won her

second challenge in a row and the bottom two were Vixen and Blair St Clair, who sashayed away.

At what age did drag become an interest, and how did you pick your name? Drag became an interest to me when I was around 18-19 and was cast in a musical as a drag queen in “La Cage aux Follies.” My name was actually from my mom. I told her that I liked the name Blair, and there's a street downtown in Indianapolis named St Clair St, and she came up with the idea to go by Blair St. Clair. How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul's Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you had been chosen? I auditioned for RuPaul's Drag Race twice. The first audition was a good experience for me to prepare myself for season 10. I think that you should take every chance you get in life, and I'm really glad that I took this chance and was able to get on the show. When I found out that I was chosen I was ecstatic. I was so excited, and there were no nerves. I felt like a new chapter had opened up for me. Is there additional pressure now that RuPaul's Drag Race has been on for nine seasons plus three seasons of All Stars? I think there's a lot of pressure today, because now there's an expectation on what drag is and should be. Tell us about your Drag Race experience? I had a really amazing time on Drag Race. I wish I had been on for a few moments more, but I'm really proud of what I did on the show while I was there. What's your marital status? If single, what are you looking for in a man?

I'm currently dating someone, and I see marriage coming down the line with this person. The main quality that I look for is integrity. I look for someone I not only love, but value, appreciate and am thankful for. And I'm lucky because I found that. Who do you want to win and why? You know, there are so many talented girls on the show, but I have to say that Miz Cracker would be my top pick if I had to choose just one. She's a huge contender and one of my best friends. I just love her so much. I'm also really close with The Vixen and think that she also brings something special to the show. What's does the future have in store for you? I'm going to be releasing a new song and music video called “Now or Never.” It's so personal to me, and I'm really proud of it. I'm excited to share it with the world. It's about me looking through life in black and white haze and finally making that choice to finally look at things in color.

f you want someone who “looks the part” to do the honors at your upcoming nuptials, Tony Adams is your man. With his ascetic bearing, fine features, and raven brows — all offset by a glorious shock of white hair — Adams looks like a parish priest straight out of central casting. Which. In fact. He was. Way back in the ’80s. Unable to reconcile his gay identity or moral values with a relentlessly (and hypocritically) homophobic Vatican, Adams eventually left the Church. But he never lost his call to ministry,

which is why he gladly returned to the nuptial business almost as soon as marriage equality became a reality in these United States. Since then, Adams has joined scores of LGBT couples in matrimony (holy and… less so), a service the snowbird performs both in South Florida and New York City. We sat down with this unconventional man of the cloth to get the skinny on life as a same-sex marriage officiant: the outfits, the vows, the horror stories. —Bill Henning

How long have you been officiating?

As a Catholic priest, I officiated at weddings for many years until I left active ministry in 1982. I wanted to help LGBT couples who were denied marriage by their anti-gay Catholic Church, so just a few days after marriage equality became law in New York — July 24, 2011— I married two gay couples in Central Park in front of a huge crowd of cheering friends and strangers. A beautiful day. No dry eyes.

What kind of accreditation do you have? What did you have to do to get it? I am a minister of the Universal Life Church, which is one of a handful of churches recognized by New York City for the purpose of becoming a licensed officiant. The application process is easy, all spelled out on the [New York] City Clerk’s website. Oddly, singing ability is not required. Most of my weddings have no religious overtones, but if asked, I’ll honor the couple’s traditions — Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or otherwise.

Any opposite-sex couples?

I would not discriminate against an oppositesex couple.

How do you prepare for a wedding? How much do you work with the couple?

Working with the couple is key. I have to get a sense of what they envision, and I have to honor their wishes 100 percent. Sure, I’ll give them advice, but it’s their day: Casual? Formal? Relatives? Rings? Vows? Pets? Children? Music? God? No God?

Is your accreditation limited to a particular state or states?

Yes, requirements vary from state to state. There are some startling FATHER AND THE BRIDES With Jen and Rose in NYC’s Central Park in 2011 differences between New York and Florida, for instance. In New York City, there’s a specific licensing process. In Florida, your officiant needs only to be an ordained clergyman of “I marry same-sex any kind — and there’s no proof couples to make up for required! Do you have a set script? Or does it vary from service to service?

Never a set script, but there is one thing I always do when I know that there are straight relatives and friends in attendance. I start the wedding by thanking them for rising above any personal prejudices or religious beliefs they may have. I thank them for the courage of their presence honoring and supporting two people in love. I address my words to the oldest people present because they have grown up in a time when LGBT people were closeted, invisible, and condemned. The older ones are also more likely to know the truth about marriage and how it works. I honor their presence. I always get a little choked up when I thank them and see them blink back tears, but hey, if you can’t make ’em cry, it’s not a wedding, right?

never presume that their vows will include sexual exclusivity.

Do you recall any particularly memorable vows?

I have had to learn some phrases in Hebrew, Ukranian, Spanish, Italian and Polish — just enough to honor the heritage of the couples. Sometimes, I’m not quite sure what I may have actually said! I enjoy delivering the final blessing in Latin if the crowd is Roman Catholic but only if the couple asks for that. It’s part of what sets me apart from other officiants.

Where have you performed marriages?

All over Manhattan and B r o o klyn, including several spots in Central Park. In Fort Lauderdale, I’ve ofWhat do you wear? Do you ever help the couple write their vows?

Yes. Often the couple is not sure what they want to say, so it’s helpful for me to submit a list of words and phrases. They are never shy about then telling me what to avoid. For instance, an old-fashioned phrase like, “Will you be obedient to your spouse forsaking all others?” can sometimes elicit snorts and eye-rolls. The majority of the couples I’ve married have specified that there be no mention of god or religion. I also 46 | Hotspots.LGBT

Do couples usually invite you to attend the reception?

Yes. I love socializing with folks in the context of a wedding. Great fun!

in a restaurant in Greenwich Village a half hour before we were to start the ceremony. The couple had a cute little dog that would be the ring bearer. The rings were tied to his diamond collar with a festive ribbon. When I tried to take a picture of the dog that had been scampering through the crowd, I saw that he had chewed through the ribbon and that the rings were lost somewhere on the floor of the restaurant. Everyone was enlisted in the search and they were located. What do performers say about working with dogs and children? In Central Park I married two lesbian couples by the Bethesda Fountain. Pouring rain meant we had to go under the Bethesda Terrace, but a Halloween haunted house had been set up there and we were kept out. One of the lesbians got spooked by the sounds of devilish recorded screams from within the haunted house, and she refused to go on with the ceremony, saying it would be cursed. She calmed down, umbrellas were located, and everything ended well as the rain turned into a gorgeous snowfall.

believe that love can last forever, I’ll have done my job — and I can feel it in the air.

What should a couple look for in an officiant?

Efficiency! A good officiant never waits to the last minute when working with a couple. A good officiant is never late or unprepared for glitches! Beyond that, I think it’s part instinct, part compassion and part wisdom. I’ve lived with the same man for 35 years, married to him for nine. I’ve been around, and I got stuff to say about it!

What made you decide you wanted to officiate weddings?

To make up for having been a priest in the antigay Catholic Church. It’s my way of making amends.

While you were a priest, did you marry any couples? Maaaaany.

I’ve heard you charge no fee for officiating. Is that true?

I refuse to accept even a penny. This is another way I make amends for having been a priest in a Catholic Church that makes money via the distribution of its sacraments. When the couple asks about a fee, I suggest they make a donation to The SMART Ride via my rider page. [The annual two-day benefit bicycle ride from Miami to Key West raises funds for groups providing HIV/AIDS service in South Florida.] They have all been amazingly generous.

In your experience, what makes a wedding ceremony memorable or moving?

In a world in which half of all marriages fail, and given that many in attendance have had failed marriages, if I can make people feel hopeful again, and able to set aside the past or their fears for the future, and if I can make them 48 | Hotspots.LGBT

Some couples will have a friend get accredited to officiate at their wedding. Good idea?

Maybe, but will that friend know how to set the tone and pace and roll with glitches in the ceremony? I think it is better to ask your closest friends or relatives to read, recite, or sing something, as long as they keep it brief!

Do any of the couples you’ve married stay in touch with you?

I am in touch with all of them, even if it’s just on Facebook. I am happy to report that they are all still together. “Who’s your daddy?” should be my officiant motto!

iami, The national touring company of the Tony Awardwinning, record-breaking hit musical CHICAGO will welcome Latin sensation & “Jane the Virgin” star Jaime Camil as he makes his tour debut in the role of “Billy Flynn” beginning Tuesday, May 8,. He will play a one-week limited engagement at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County until Sunday, May 13th. Broadway History was made in 2016 when, for the first time ever, two Mexican-born actors led a Broadway musical! Together again - Latin superstars, and long-time friends, Jaime Camil and Bianca Marroquín will appear on stage opposite each other reprising their Broadway roles as “Billy Flynn” and “Roxie Hart” in Miami’s limited engagement of only eight performances! Bianca Marroquín is a CHICAGO veteran having appeared in the Broadway cast off and on since 2002.

Jaime Camil is one of the most well-known actors in the Spanish-speaking world and now the USA is welcoming him with open arms thanks to his performance as “Rogelio de la Vega” in the critically-acclaimed and multi-awarded TV show “Jane the Virgin.” He’s a Critic’s Choice and Teen Choice Award nominee and an Imagen Award winner for the role. He has starred in more than 20 award-winning films including Pulling Strings and 200 Cartas (alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda) and has won global and countless film and theater awards throughout his over 20-year career. Mr. Camil has led the most successful and highest-rated telenovelas of all time, including “La Fea Más Bella,” “Por Ella Soy Eva” and “Qué Pobres Tan Ricos.” He has recorded four platinum-selling albums and has led many musicals in his native Mexico City including West Side Story, Hook, Aladdin, El Diluvio que Viene and more. In 2005, he led the Broadway-bound musical The Mambo Kings, he previously appeared on Broadway in Latinologues and he also starred in a suc-

cessful three-night only summer 2017 production of Mamma Mia! at the Hollywood Bowl playing the role of “Sam Carmichael” opposite Jennifer Nettles as “Donna.” Mr. Camil was also the voice of “Papá” in the Academy Award-winning animated feature, Coco, which is the top-grossing film of all time in Mexico. It was a pleasure to sit down with Jaime Camil for this Hotspots Exclusive Interview.

Were you always a performer, even as a child, or when did it start?

My mom is Brazilian and was a singer, writer and painter, so my artistic side came from the umbilical cord. My dad is a business man, and when I was a teenager he didn’t want me to pursue arts. He wanted me to go into business, but he gave me his blessing to go into the arts when he saw how passionate I was about it.

What was your first professional/paid gig?

I used to have a talk show like Jimmy Fallon…It was my first paid gig.

When did you know entertainment would be your career?

I really knew when I was a small boy and I used my study lamp as my microphone. I sang my heart out to the mirror, which was my audience.

How did you get cast in Jane The Virgin?

I was in Mexico, came to pilot season in LA, and got rejected ore times than I can count. A few years later, I got 3 direct offers. This was so foreign to me that I didn’t even know what a direct offer was. When my agent explained it to me, I was shocked and I read the 3 scripts. Without a doubt the script with the most creativity was Jane the Virgin. Even though it was on the smallest network, it was the project I felt was the best.

The cast seems to get along so well, are you all friends in real life? Oh yeah, we are all friends. It’s like a big Costa Rican party and we adore the show and each other. The other day I went on the boat with Yael Grobglas (Petra) and Brett Dier (Michael).

What made you decide to come star in Chicago again?

They invited me to do it on Broadway in 2016, and I was super happy, as it was my first time on a Broadway stage. They called me back, and I said

yes, but I can only do Miami as my schedule doesn’t allow any more time.

What is your dream role?

I am pretty much a junkie for scripts. I am not looking for a particular role. If I love a script with a challenging actor, that’s the one I want to play.

What should our readers expect from the touring company of Chicago?

Chicago as you know is the longest American show on Broadway. This show has heritage, it’s iconic and everyone needs to see this show. It’s a group of freakishly talented individuals that dance and perform the songs to expertise. It balances on the human element.

Chicago also stars Terra C. MacLeod as Velma Kelly, Paul Vogt as Amos Hart, Jennifer Fouché as Matron “Mama” Morton and D. Ratell as Mary Sunshine. With a legendary book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, Chicago is now the #1 longest-running American musical in Broadway history. Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.

Tickets to Chicago are available through the Arsht Center Box Office in person at 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami, FL 33132, by calling 305.949.6722, or online at arshtcenter.org. Ticket prices start at $29*. Visit www.ChicagoTheMusical.com for more information. Chicago closes of the 2017-2018 Broadway in Miami season presented by Florida Theatrical Association and the Adrienne Arsht Center along with presenting sponsor Bank of America and with support from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

LONGER A HOTSPOT HOTSPOTS BANNED FROM THE GAYEST STARBUCKS IN FLORIDA

I

f you enjoy sipping a refreshing beverage while reading Hotspots, you may find yourself out of luck these days — at least you might if you live in or visit Wilton Manors. Since last October, Starbucks has refused to allow Hotspots Media to distribute magazines in the lobby of its store on 26th Street near Five Points. We first became aware of the problem when the manager of the store contacted us. “Starbucks has changed the policy around magazines in our lobbies,” the manager emailed on October 20. “[T]he current protocol is that ALL magazines must be approved [by] my District and Area managers before being displayed. We welcome most magazines, but unfortunately, because of Hotspots’ provocative covers, the magazine has not been approved, and we can’t have it in the lobby.” The policy change was news to us and, while we were dismayed, we were grateful to the store manager for reaching out. The store manager identified himself as a Hotspots reader and clearly regretted having to be the bearer of bad news. “This isn’t a closed door,”

72 | Hotspots.LGBT

By Peter Clark he wrote. “If ever you wish to have your magazines in our Starbucks lobby, you can have any covers or magazines sent to my District Manager for approval BEFORE dropping off so we don’t have any misunderstandings.” That same day, I emailed the district manager. I pointed out that Hotspots has been serving Wilton Manors for more than three decades, and that the city has the largest concentration of LGBT households per capita in the country. I also made it clear that the magazine has high standards: “We have a very strict policy about content and images and never allow anything in the magazine that would be considered ‘provocative’.” I noted that the issue out that week, which did feature a buff, shirtless guy (as our covers often do) was shot in a gym, and that the issue itself was a Health Issue. I assured her that our cover photo was no more provocative than the shirtless models often featured on leading, national men’s health and fashion magazines — and then helpfully provided a lineup of the latest Hotspots cover sandwiched between covers of Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness,

Men’s Journal, and GQ. Each one featured a photo of an attractive, muscular man with his shirt off (actually, Men’s Journal had two: Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte). I invited the district manager to call me to discuss the matter and provided my mobile number for her convenience. We heard nothing from Starbucks for more than four months. Finally, on March 1, I emailed the district manager again, explained that readers who were accustomed to picking up Hotspots at the Five Points Starbucks had been complaining that the magazine was no longer distributed there, and asked for the ban to be lifted: “We respectfully ask that Hotspots magazine be allowed to return to the location along with the others.” What others, you ask? Other LGBT publications, including OutClique and Metro Guys, which continue to be available in the Starbucks at Five Points. That same day, the district manager denied our request: “I am unable to approve a magazine with content that is not family appropriate, as this is a location that serves all of the Wilton Manors Community, including school children and families,” she wrote. “If you would like to drop off several copies of your magazine in the store, I would be happy to review those with the new regional manager and get back to you on a response.” I was not surprised to have the “children and families” card played. It’s commonly deployed against LGBT businesses. Fortunately, I am particularly well positioned to respond. “As a father and grandfather, I understand,” I emailed. “Our content follows federal PG-13 guidelines, and I agree and remind our advertisers that ‘a 13-year-old girl can pick up our publication at Dunkin’ Donuts.’ I also want to remind you that LGBTs are parents too.” I pointed out that Hotspots is approved by the cities of Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors to have our distribution boxes out on the sidewalks. I also reminded her that Starbucks has been a strong supporter of the LGBT community nationally. The company’s booth at Orlando Pride even happened to be right next to the Hotspots booth two years in a row. We took the manager up on her offer and left a package of recent issues at the Five Points store for review by the regional director. The next week, our president emailed to make sure the package had been received and ask whether the magazines had been reviewed. He also proposed an ongoing review process. “I

could send you the electronic magazine every Wednesday for review/approval, so it could be distributed on Thursday to the store,” he emailed. ”Alternatively, if you approve, we could have a weather-proof box [installed] outside the store by the entrance/parking lot for our readers.” The district manager responded March 6: “[T]he magazine will need to be reviewed by our regional director. I will get back to you once that process is complete. That process will definitely not be complete by this Thursday and we are unable to allow a box to be installed prior to approval. Thank you for delivering the magazines quickly. I will work as quickly as possible on my end as well!” Since then, we’ve heard nothing. The district manager has not responded to three subsequent emails.

“Because of Hotspots’ provocative covers, the magazine has not been approved, and we can’t have it in the lobby.” —Store Manager, Wilton Manors Starbucks

We’re getting stonewalled. And not in a good way. I would encourage Hotspots readers who frequent the Wilton Manors Starbucks — and any others who feel, as I do, that the magazine is being unfairly singled out — to write a short message to Starbucks asking that Hotspots distribution at the Five Points be allowed to resume. Email your letter us at info@hotspotsmedia.com. We will collect all your responses and submit them to Starbucks for consideration. We have made every effort to get this situation resolved to the satisfaction of everyone involved: Starbucks, Hotspots Media, residents of Wilton Manors, and you, our readers. Starbucks’ refusal to constructively engage us is simply not acceptable.

Peter Clark is publisher of Hotspots Media Group.

MATT WALSH

H

appy belated Sex Ed Sit Out, everybody! You might have forgotten to mark your calendars, but conservative leaders asked parents to keep their kids home on Monday, April 23 to protest sex education. “Parents across the country will be keeping their children home from school to protest the insane, pornographic, morally debased propaganda that passes for ‘sex ed’ these days,” explained Matt Walsh at Ben Shapiro’s dailywire. com. “It’s about time that parents took a stand against this madness.” Walsh, a conservative writer and selfdescribed “extremist,” presents a novel, alternative approach to sex ed that I’m sure will work perfectly— once robots take over the world. “Sex should be a subject covered in science class, and it should go no further than simply explaining how human reproduction works,” he writes. “All of the rest of this — the lessons on ‘gender identity,’ the free condoms, the discussion of masturbation and oral sex — is ideological.” Now, knowing how human reproduction works is not the same thing as having an understanding of human sexuality. It won’t help kids navigate the complex personal relationships that are at the heart of sexuality. Teenagers are being yanked through the stratosphere by their hormones. Most do not have the maturity to deal with these feelings and urges, let alone the selfcontrol to not act on them. So, age-appropriate discussions about condoms and masturbation are literally fucking useful, not ideological. “The schools want our kids to be the sort of people who indulge their sexual urges freely and openly, without regard to oppressive notions of morality and human dignity,” Walsh writes, apparently under the impression that public schools are veritable bathhouses. “The deviants who develop these courses believe that hedonism is the path to fulfillment.” This is a pretty standard conservative take on sex ed: that sex should be divorced from pleasure, reserved only for making babies. Of course, we also don’t want teenagers having

78 | Hotspots.LGBT

“Sex should be a subject covered in science class, and it should go no further than explaining how human reproduction works.” babies, which is kinda why sex ed is important: because teenagers are having sex, whether they know how to protect themselves or not. Sex is not Satan’s workshop. It’s a healthy, normal part of human life. And far too many people have hang-ups about it because of the kind of senseless shame folks like Walsh promote. “My only problem with the [April 23] sit-out is that it’s too short,” Walsh writes. “It should be permanent. But this is a good first step.” This idea that public education is a finishing school for sexual deviance is damaging not only to children, but also to their parents and their communities as conservatives work to tear down this pillar of American life and democracy. So, yes, parents should be aware that sex-ed horror stories are being used to promote the destruction of their kids’ schools. And they should absolutely take a stand against this madness. HOT BODIES

B

DON T LET PAINS STOP YOUR GAINS

FOUR GOOD HABITS THAT WILL HELP YOU KEEP INJURIES AT BAY by Tom Bonanti

uilding a healthy, beautiful body isn't easy! It takes time, planning, sacrifice, patience, and, yes, a little pain along the way. Good old muscle soreness is as much a part of working out as protein shakes and broiled chicken breasts. But it's always important to “listen” to your body — and recognize the difference between routine muscle soreness and pain that's telling you something's wrong. When you're exercising and something starts to hurt, stop what you're doing, or you may risk serious injury — injury that could set you back and cause you to lose hard-won gains. Stop, drink water, stretch lightly, and re-evaluate your form. Proceed with caution, and if pain persists, take a break, head for the ice, and seriously consider seeing your physician. That last bit is particularly important for people with pre-existing joint or muscle

issues. For certain conditions, consult your doctor before restarting your routine. I'm referring here to things like chronic neck pain, shoulder-impingement or rotator-cuff issues, chronic lower-back pain, and chondromalacia (deterioration of the cartilage under the kneecap, which can stem either from overuse or arthritis). If you've been treated for one of these ailments, only with your physician's approval should you return to working out. Most doctors will tell you that, with a well-tailored, progressive exercise program, many of the above conditions can be greatly improved — often without any prolonged layoff. If you're working with a trainer, get a note from your physician clearing you to exercise, and ask the doctor to specify any physical restrictions you may have to observe. Here are four precautions anyone can take to ensure awesome workouts, maximum gains, and zero injuries.

eddings have always been a minefield of etiquette considerations, rife with potential faux pas. In the age of social media, that minefield is now live-streamable, and every explosive misstep has the potential to go viral. But social media can also make your wedding experience better, digitizing your planning and extending its reach, deepening connections with family and friends who can’t attend, and deputizing every guest as an auxiliary wedding photographer. Mixing social media with the biggest day of your life can be a tricky proposition. Here’s how to get it right. —Bill Henning

Be sure to fill in close friends and family before you post a pic of the ring on Instagram. Don’t Get Pre-empted Threaten those friends and family members with death (a slow, agonizing one) if they announce anything on social media before you do. To Bling or Not to Bling? Think twice about posting ring pics. While everybody wants to see the rock, posting pics can seem boastful or cheesy (especially if that rock is big!). It’s Not Complicated Synchronize the change to your “relationship status” on Facebook. If one of you changes to “engaged” and the other forgets to, your shady friends will talk.

Tell Before You Tweet There are certain people in your life who deserve to find out about your engagement from your own lips.

Talk It Out Sit down with your partner and discuss how much of the wedding process you want to share on social media. Don’t be afraid

THE ENGAGEMENT

HAVE A SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY

of the nuclear option: A complete ban might be difficult to enforce, but it’s not unthinkable. You do you. Craft a Plan If you haven’t opted for a total ban, run through the whole wedding process from engagement to honeymoon and develop a social media plan for each step. Let this article be your guide! Share It Let your guests know how you’ve decided to handle social media. And do it at the right time, possibly in stages. They can’t use a wedding hashtag until you share it with them. Remember the Luddites Don’t communicate wedding plans exclusively on social media. Not all your guests are plugged in!

WEDDING PREP

Embrace the Boards Social media can be invaluable during the wedding planning process. Instagram feeds can help you find vendors, Pinterest is the perfect place to collect your own ideas, and Skype can make it easy to meet with a wedding planner, vendors, or distant family, especially if you’re having a destination wedding. Hash It Out If you plan to use a wedding hashtag, choose one now. You may want to use it to tag posts as you plan your wedding, or you could keep it to yourselves until the big day. Don’t Over-Post If you are sharing details of your planning, don’t go overboard. It’s natural to want to share your excitement, but you don’t want people to be totally over the wedding two months before it happens. Tease a few details (a corner of a venue, a blossom or two, a fabric sample), but keep people guessing. And remember: Not everyone on your feed is invited! Limit the Cooks Think twice before crowdsourcing your wedding planning. Asking people to recommend vendors is one thing. Seeking input on color schemes, music, or the menu is strongly discouraged. Keep your Pinterest boards private! Accentuate the Positive Any pre-wedding posts should be upbeat and fun — no negativity, no matter how many obstacles or annoyances you encounter! Never discuss, or even allude to, tensions with, say, members of the wedding party or future in-laws.

ON THE BIG DAY

Stick to the Plan Have a detailed plan for each part of the day. What, if anything, do you want shared? And by whom?

Lock Things Down Let close family and your wedding party know exactly what is and isn’t OK. Think twice about allowing any posts from behind the scenes. No one should see pics of the bride or groom before they arrive at the ceremony. Hand It All Over Give up your phone. You want to be in the moment, every moment, all day long. Surrender your social media feeds to a trusted friend (a Tweeter of Honor) or the wedding planner, if you have one. (This approach also makes sense for preliminaries like the engagement party, bridal shower, and bachelor or bachelorette parties.) Some wedding planners — and wedding destinations — offer the services of a social media concierge.

AT THE CEREMONY

Lay Down the Law If you’ve decided to ban photographs, make your wishes clear with a sign at the entrance or, better, a note in the program or, better yet, one on each seat. Right before the ceremony begins, have your officiant remind the crowd that pics are strictly verboten. (The officiant can also give an “all clear” after the ceremony, if guest are allowed to take photos then.) Don’t Mix Signals If you’ve banned photography during the ceremony, don’t have signs at that venue that feature the wedding hashtag. Go Live Whether or not you’ve decided to ban photography by guests, you may want to consider broadcasting the ceremony to distant relatives and friends via Skype or Facebook Live.

THE RECEPTION

Brand It If you’re allowing photography at the reception, encourage your guests to share by getting your hashtag in their faces: on signs by the bar, printed on napkins, on the menu, or place cards. Keeping it Realtime Consider using WedPics or a similar app to curate photos shared by guests. You can even have them flash on screens at the reception. Photo Approval With luck, there won’t be any drama about photos or other posts from your wedding. But if there is, don’t hesitate to ask guests to take posts down. (A wedding planner or Tweeter of Honor can come in handy here.)

When the going gets tough in your relationship, you can take the easy way out (and you should if you don’t love your partner anymore), but there can be plenty of upside in sticking the hard times out and trying to make it work. How you do that is up to you — there is no right or wrong way — but these tips on putting the pieces of a shattered partnership back together again are a great place to start.

CHECK YOURSELF FIRST. When we’re not connecting with our partners in a positive way, it’s easy to concentrate on their negative behavior — where they’re falling short and letting you down (and annoying the hell out of you while they’re at it) — instead of focusing on how we’re contributing to the situation with our own behavior. “The trap within this mindset is that it focuses on what the partner is doing or failing to do but doesn’t make the individual accountable for their own choices and behaviors,” explains Anna Osborn, a licensed marriage and family therapist in California. “Doing a gut check on how you as an individual are showing up in the relationship — and being willing to admit it — can have a profound positive impact on the relationship. Doing this can also help couples make communication safer by demonstrating that each person can admit their mistakes and work together to create change without it being held against them.”

1

Hotspots.LGBT | 103

2

REVISIT WHAT EACH OF YOU VALUE. Most couples consider calling it quits because their feelings for one another change. What they don’t realize is that feelings are supposed to change; none of us are the same at the beginning of a relationship as we are just a few years later. But common values, like along with affection, loyalty and fiscal responsibility, are what hold a healthy relationship together — along with plenty of quality time. When couples work together in pursuit of those values, they’re more likely to re-experience positive feelings toward one another. Clinical psychologist Dr. Jill Gross says, “When couples feel out of sorts, it’s because either their values are changing and they aren’t talking about it with each other — sometimes because they aren’t aware of these changes themselves — and/or because they are not spending time consciously living their values.” If this sounds like what’s going on in your rocky relationship, Dr. Gross recommends taking inventory of your shared values. • Find a list of values (just a Google search away!), sit down together and talk about the list while each of you circles his/her top five values. • Identify one or two of the five that you two have in common. Brainstorm something you can do together in service of these values. “For example,” says Dr. Gross, “if you both notice that affection is on the top of your values list, I encourage to get creative about setting aside a regular, prescribed amount of time dedicated solely to the practice of giving and receiving affection.” • If you find you have no common values in your respective top-five lists, Dr. Gross encourages you to seek outside assistance (relationship coaching or couples counseling) to help you dig a little deeper for creative ways to pursue your common values together.

“Feelings are supposed to change.”

3

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A COUPLE’S THERAPIST. Not all couples can fix their issues on their own. And there’s no shame in that. If your attempts to work on problems usually end in arguments — ones where nobody walks away appreciating what the other was trying to express — an unbiased, highly trained, third-party mediator may be just what you need to make progress toward healing old wounds. But for counseling to work, you both must be willing to take your sessions seriously, recognizing that therapy may be crucial to your relationship’s survival. To make the most of your time and money, go in with open minds and focus on listening to what your partner is saying — without getting defensive. Immediately responding with attacks won’t accomplish anything except building more resentment at $100-plus an hour. 104 | Hotspots.LGBT

4

PLAN A GETAWAY TOGETHER. Whenever my boyfriend and I eye aren’t seeing eye-to-eye (or we’re simply getting on each other’s nerves more frequently than usual), I like to plan a getaway. We go somewhere we can forget whatever’s going on at home (and work) and just spend a couple days reconnecting. Our fighting doesn’t mean we don’t love each other anymore — quite the opposite, in fact; our heated moments show we love each other enough to spar about whatever’s driving us crazy about the other — and sometimes a few days unplugged and focused on our relationship help get us back on track.

“Many of us — gay men, especially — like to talk at instead of listen to our partners.” STOP TALKING AND START LISTENING. Many of us — gay men, especially — like to talk at instead of listen to our partners. We think we’re right about everything (seriously, what’s that about?), but by and large, we’re probably not (and a lot of times we know it), so why don’t give our partners an honest chance to tell us what their feeling? The mending process will move along much faster if we just shut our mouths every now and again. “Ask your partner what they need, and tell them what you need,” advises relationship expert David Bennett, who owns the relationship-coaching company Double Trust Dating and Relationships with his twin brother. “Be honest and tell them they can be honest. In many cases, even couples who have been together for a long time have no idea what each person really needs to do to make things work. It could be as simple as listening more, offering to help out more around the house, or even giving the other person more alone time — which, by the way, research shows is very important to the health of a relationship. If neither partner can make an effort to work on meeting the needs, then it’s time to break up. However, a couple may find saving the relationship doesn’t take that much work.”
