A VIE EN ROSE New doc captures the legendary Grace Jones just living her life, on stage and off.

onna Summer's musical is up for two Tony Awards, The Cher Show comes to Broadway this fall, and if a Grace Jones musical should ever open on The Great White Way, it might look something like Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami, the new documentary that hits South Florida theaters this week. “Bloodlight” is Jamaican patois for the red light that toggles on in a studio when a performer is recording, “bami” means “bread,” and Grace Jones, the world's longestreigning androgynous pop icon, has been nourished by both: the glare of the spotlight and the (ostensibly) simple life with her family back in Jamaica. Director Sophie Fiennes (yes, Ralph's sister) refers to these two sides of Grace's persona as the “anti-natural” and the natural. And over ive years of ilming, she captures plenty of both elements, traipsing between Tokyo, Paris, Moscow, London, and New York for tour dates, recording sessions, parties, and public appearances, of course, but also tagging along on family visits to Jamaica, including a road trip with Grace and her son Paolo to Spanish Town, where she grew up. Given Grace's peripatetic lifestyle, with its sometimes jarring venue changes — Fiennes cuts from a scene of nightclub

debauchery to an early-morning visit to church in Jamaica with mom — it's the ilm's musical sequences that supply the through line. The shows, including live performances of “Slave to the Rhythm,” “Pull Up to the Bumper,” and “Love is the Drug,” are, in typically Jonesian fashion, spectacular — as much performance art as performance. Yet it's during these scenes that she seems to come most fully to life. The stage, with all its arti ice, really does seem to be Grace's

natural habitat, and it's there that we see her most clearly. As Jones once con ided to Fiennes, “The music says more about me than I can say about the music.” Grace irst met the director at a preview of Fienne's earlier ilm, Hoover Street Revival (2002), which told the story of Jones' older brother Noel, a charismatic L.A. preacher. “You understand where I'm from,” an exuberant Grace told Fiennes after the screening. “I love the smell of your ilm.”

Readers, I think you're gonna love the smell of this one. So, head out to the theater and douse yourself in some Eau de Warm Leatherette. —Bill Henning

pisode 7 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 started out with a Mini Challenge where Ru opened the library, because “Reading is Fundamental.” This is the infamous challenge where the girls get to read each other, and once again Eureka won (this girl is on a winning streak). She then informed the contestants that the Maxi Challenge would be the one everyone is waiting for: Snatch Game.

The runway theme was “Mermaid Fantasy,” a salute to Bette Midler. The top three of the week were Eureka, Aquaria and Monet, with Aquaria taking the win — a six-night stay at the Grove Hotel in Cherry Grove, on New York's Fire Island. The bottom two were The Vixen and Monique Hearts,

and Monique sashayed away after clearly not knowing the words to the song!

At what age did drag become an interest, and how did you pick your name? I was working at Hamburger Mary's and they needed a queen for the next day. They asked if I knew anyone and, jokingly, I said I would do it. They gave me money to go get all the things I would need to do drag and my drag persona was born. Drag helped set Kevin up in a healthy safe space. The first name I picked in drag wasn't cute. One day I was at a bar, and my friends picked the name Monique, and I picked Heart as my last name because I knew I wanted to be a queen that helped people in life. How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul's Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you had been chosen? Technically, once. And it felt amazing! Is there additional pressure now that RuPaul's Drag Race has been on for nine seasons plus three seasons of All Stars? No. Tell us about your Drag Race experience? They fed us well, the production was great‌we had no issues! What happened with the lip sync? Did you know the song or did you draw a blank? I tried to learn it, but I was focusing on the costume and didn't get it. What's your marital status? I'm single, and very happy. There is no reason to rush, especially now with this new found fame. But whomever comes, they have to sign a prenup. Who do you want to win and why? Everybody black and Aquaria, because they are stunning! What's ahead for Monique? You will see me on daytime television. My long/short time goal is to become the gay Steve Harvey‌ a sensation to the world. For more on Monique, go to: Instagram.com/iammoniqueheart

COME OUT TONIGHT Wexler (front) sings “Sherry” with castmates (from left) Corey Greenan, Tommaso Antico, and Chris Stevens.

Oh, What a Night! Jersey Boys brings the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to life at the Broward Center 32 | Hotspots.LGBT

E

ven if you can’t name the recording artists, you know the songs: “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like A Man,” “Rag Doll,” “Let’s Hang On,” and “Working My Way Back To You.” And you know that falsetto. Those trademark high notes belong to Francesco Stephen Castelluccio — born 1934 in Newark, New Jersey, and better known by his stage name, Franki Valli. Jersey Boys, the long-running Broadway musical — winner of four 2006 Tony Awards, including Best Musical — takes a jukebox full of 1960s and 1970s hits by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons (plus a few Valli solo joints, such as “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and “My Eyes Adored You”), and uses them not to weave a dizzying narrative fantasia à la Mamma Mia!, but instead to conduct a Behind The Music-style dive into the backgrounds of The Four Seasons

Were you always a performer, even as a child? Yes, I started performing at a very young age. When I was 7, I was in Oliver! What was your first paid gig? I got paid for that very first show.

When did you know singing and performing would be your career? I think it’s kind of like anything else: You just keep progressing to the next level and, before you know it, it’s what you do.

How did you get cast in Jersey Boys? Five or six years ago, I was down in La Jolla [California] doing a couple projects with some of the people who created Jersey Boys. They needed someone, I fit the bill, and everything worked out. Besides Frankie Valli, what has been your favorite role? Every project brings with it a unique set of challenges — and new experiences. Each one calls upon a different skill set, and I enjoy the opportunity to do new things and push myself.

What’s your dream role? This show lines up amazingly with my skill set, with who I am and the things I believe in [in theater]. So, anything that lines up with that! That lets me

explore my talent and my personality and the world.

q

themselves, just a bunch of regular Joes from Jersey whose unique sound catapulted them to radio superstardom. Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons had a squeakyclean image. The reality was a little different: The group took its name from a bowling alley, one member was deeply in debt to a loan shark, and the others sought help from a mob boss to pay off those debts. Marshall Brickman, who co-wrote the book for the musical has said, “It’s a classic American story. It’s rags to riches, and back to rags.” In the production of Jersey Boys that opened at the Broward Center this week, Jonny Wexler stars as Frankie Valli. Wexler’s worked his way up: He spent three years playing Joe Pesci (yes, that Joe Pesci) in the show before nabbing the lead role last year. And — brace yourself! — Wexler’s not even from Jersey. He was born in Ontario (snowbird readers might recognize him as “Moe Doodle” from The Doodlebops on Canada’s Disney Channel). We sat down with the young star for this exclusive chat. —Scott Holland

VALLI BOY Jonny Wexler

“There aren’t very many shows that have 30 hit songs in them.” What should our readers expect from the touring company of Jersey Boys? The show’s been around for over a decade for good reason. It shines as a pinnacle of modern theater. I think it really changes the way people think about modern musicals. There aren’t very many shows that have 30 hit songs in them! The way the songs are written into the story is amazing. And that story is the American Dream. This show is great for people who have heard of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and it’s great for people who haven’t. The music has permeated our society. Jersey Boys runs through May 20 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW Fifth Ave, Ft. Lauderdale). For info and tix (from $41): browardcenter.org or 954-4620222. Fort Lauderdale

to host the first-ever Pride of the Americas in 2020 By Bill Henning

D

id you love Fort Lauderdale Pride on the beach this year? (I know I did.) Well, I’ve got some bad news for you: It looks like there won’t be a Pride Fort Lauderdale in 2020. Horrified? Don’t be. The reason there may not be a Pride Fort Lauderdale in two years is because the city will be welcoming LGBT folk from the entire Western Hemisphere — and beyond — to the world’s first (drumroll, please!)… Pride of the Americas. That’s right. Pride 2020 isn’t being canceled; it’s getting pre-empted, supersized, and Latinized. To which I can only say: ¡Dámelo! Pride of the Americas is born out of the tremendous success of Pride Fort Lauderdale’s move to the beach last year. The organization’s leaders clearly know how to plan, execute, and expand a major event. The other factor driving the Pan-American event is more bittersweet. Over the past couple years, Pride Fort Lauderdale had been preparing a bid to bring WorldPride to our city in 2021. Organizers made their final pitch to the WorldPride Committee 46 | Hotspots.LGBT

of InterPride, the international organization that helps facilitate Pride celebrations around the globe, last October in Indianapolis. Pride Fort Lauderdale’s presentation was widely deemed a rousing success, but the committee voted to award WorldPride 2021 to Copenhagen. Some queer wags have noted that Pride Fort Lauderdale’s bid may have been doomed from the start due to factors not entirely within the group’s control. The WorldPride immediately preceding the 2021 event is slated for New York City in 2019, to coincide with Stonewall50 festivities, and in the interest of fairness, InterPride likes to spread the love among countries, making the selection of a U.S. city for 2021 highly unlikely. (It certainly didn’t help Pride Fort Lauderdale’s bid that the Miami organizers of World OutGames 2017 had just flamed out spectacularly the preceding May, canceling the event just hours before the opening ceremonies were to begin — with many participating athletes already in Miami or en route.) Whatever the reason for Pride Fort Lauderdale’s loss in Indianapolis, after October, deeply disappointed organizers seemed to face two op-

Transport Yourself to Another World |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

By Amanda Austin

Tucked away in a tiny, unassuming strip mall on Com-

mercial Boulevard in Oakland Park, one would never expect what lies behind the heavily tinted windows of Thai Spice. As we crossed the threshold — my first visit — delicious aromas teased our noses. Once inside, we were transported to another world. It’s very cozy and romantic at Thai Spice, even at

68 | Hotspots.LGBT

lunchtime. The restaurant is a labyrinth of small rooms, with booths and tables nestled in delightful nooks. Mood lighting highlights artwork on the walls, and the blue glow from numerous aquariums provides a lovely contrast to the warm, earthy colors of walls and fabrics. Thai Spice has won numerous accolades for both its cuisine and service. In fact, it’s the

only Thai restaurant in the country to receive the 2018 Five Star Diamond Award from The American Academy of Hospitality Science. We were seated at a large booth in the rear of the restaurant and greeted by our server Rico. Thai Spice offers tempting cocktails like the Ginger Lemongrass Mojito and Mango-Tini as well as extensive lists of sake, beer,

Champagne and wine by the glass or bottle. The menu is similarly extensive. While a few of the entrees on the dinner menu can be a little pricey, lunch offers an array of affordable options. My very agreeable lunch companion and I decided to share everything. For starters, we chose

the Seafood Coconut Lemongrass Soup and the Thai Stuffed Chicken Wings. The rich, creamy soup was wellstocked with plump shrimp, scallops, and calamari rings as well as delicious chunks of grouper and blue crab claw, all perfectly cooked. The tasty soup certainly ranks among the best I’ve ever had. The Thai Stuff Chicken Wings were another treat. Deboned chicken wings are stuffed with mushrooms, chicken breast, pork loin, noodles, and Thai herbs and spices. The wings are first steamed, then lightly breaded and fried to create a unique twist on an old favorite. For main courses, we went with the Key West Grouper Filet. The dish is prepared with your choice of sauce: curry, ginger, chili garlic, Thai garlic scampi, or sam rod. We opted for the ginger, which nicely complemented the waterchestnut-flour breading and the accompanying veggies, which included broccoli, red onion,

shredded snow peas, and carrots. We also enjoyed the Classic Pepper Steak lunch special. Tender sliced beef is stir-fried with peppers, onions, and scallions in a sweet and spicy brown sauce. The dish is elevated by the use of USDA Prime filet mignon. Both entrees rate an A+. The kitchen staff at Thai Spice will adjust the level of spiciness in a dish to match a diner’s personal heat tolerance. We opted for medium and found it had quite a kick, so be conservative when ordering. All entrees are served with a choice of the soup du jour or a fresh garden salad of romaine, cucumber, red onion, and carrot, with ginger or peanut dressing. Pepper Steak

Stuffed Chicken Wings Service was friendly, attentive and nonintrusive. We never had to ask for refills on non-alcoholic beverages. At the close of our meal, we were presented with an old-fashioned dessert tray with an array of choices. We snagged a delicious Key Lime cake, which was beautify garnished. The portion was, thankfully, not enormous. Just perfect to end a fabulous meal! Hotspots.LGBT | 69

was in a coffee shop and the song “Safe and Sound” by Capital Cities started playing. I’ve heard it many times and, while it’s good, I’ve never paid much attention to it. But I just finished reading Sarah McBride’s memoir, Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and the Fight for Trans Equality. In it, this song plays a special “The Trump administration says it plans to roll back role in her relationa rule issued by former president Barack Obama that ship with Andrew Cray, the man she would fall in love with. prevents doctors, hospitals, and health insurance The man she would companies from discriminating against transgender marry. will never and would never do, then the least we can do is pay for their damn health care needs, transition surgery included. As McBride points out in her book, people are much more likely to support trans equality if they know a trans person and the number of Americans who do has grown a lot in the last few years. But that number is still quite small because the transgender population is quite small. If we have to wait until every American gets to know a trans person before full equality is achieved, we are never going to get there. Which is why cisgender people need to advocate for trans folks. As anyone who isn’t a cisgender heterosexual white male knows, having to fight for your most basic rights and constantly advocate for your own humanity is exhausting. And unfortunately for transgender Americans, they are the direct target of the most powerful people in the country. It’s not a fair fight by any means, but so long as we have hateful bigots in D.C., trans people are in an

especially dangerous position. Though let me be clear: Trans people have always been in danger. While we’ve witnessed some gains in recent years, trans people are at a higher risk of discrimination and violence. Trans women of color are at an especially high risk of physical violence and being murdered. If you support trans equality, you need to be more than a silent partner. Speak out and stand up for trans people. Want some tips for how to be a good ally? The National Center for Transgender Equality has an excellent guide at transequality.org at gaybe.am/RX. As Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Putting it another way, until trans people are safe and sound, nobody is safe and sound. Visualization can help you make your ideal physique a reality

A

by Tom Bonanti

re you tired of going to the gym and doing the same old routine and never seeing results? Maybe you're one of those guys who's reached a plateau, and you're frustrated because you can't seem to take your training to the next level? Well, you just might be overlooking a key component of your training regimen, one that's just as important as diet and exercise. I'm talking about the mental effort that can enable you to dream big, work harder, and achieve just about anything your mind can conjure up. For a few years now, athletes — and successful people from all walks of life — have been utilizing a mental technique called visualization to achieve superior results. Visualization focuses on the brain-body connection, and it can be utilized with every workout. Here's the method: Target a

muscle or muscle group. Consciously envision the muscle being trained. Block out all distractions. As you perform each rep, keep the targeted muscle under continuous tension, making sure that it is the primary mover throughout the movement. Feel each contraction. Maintain perfect form. Pay attention to the stretch. Repeat the process with each repetition of each set of each exercise. For example, here's how you can use visualization to improve your flat-bench barbell press during your chest workout.

Pre-Workout Find photos of physiques (and/or particular body parts) that you find ideal. Keep an array of these images available for constant inspiration — posted on your phone, the fridge, or the bathroom mirror — to remind you of your ideal physique. When you get to the gym, know what you want to accomplish. For example, “Today, I am

Consciously envision the muscle being trained. Block out all distractions.” going to have the greatest chest workout ever!” During your warm-up, block out all distractions (i.e. work, fatigue, annoying chatter, etc.).

Workout For chest, you are going to do three or four major exercises. For now, though, just focus on the first rep of your first set of flatbench barbell presses. After loading the desired weight on the bar, recline on the flat bench, feet flat on the floor, and look intently at the barbell above you. Breathe deeply, in and out. Grasp the bar and press the weight into position above your chest. Breathe in as you slowly lower the bar (the negative, or eccentric, phase), being sure not to drop your elbows too low. Then contract your triceps and pectorals powerfully as you push the weight up explosively. With each rep of each set, visualize your pecs working. Call to mind the photo of your ideal chest and concentrate on that image.

Post-Workout Don't be discouraged if it takes you a while to master visualization skills. Generally, the body-brain link is easier to achieve with the muscle groups you enjoy working. The photos in magazines or online are your ideal, but you're achieving something

real and personal. Over time, developing these mental processes — along with hard work — will give you the superlative results you deserve.

British soul-singer Jessie Ware talks wig snatching and gaining con dence from her queer fans, including BFF Sam Smith

J

BY CHRIS AZZOPARDI

essie Ware only recently learned what “wig snatching” means, and fresh off the European leg of her current tour, I've taught her “guncle.” The 33-year-old British songstress takes full advantage of this latest lesson in queer-speak, breaking from our phone chat just long enough to inform her gay brother, Alex, he's a guncle (“I'll take that,” he says). With Ware's nearly-two-year-old baby girl in tow, the siblings have just arrived at a Palm Springs lodge they rented, a family vacation before Ware's Coachella performance. For her solo live shows, Ware's culled a set list encompassing her three musically varied releases: her debut Devotion (2012), which features her breakout single “Wildest Moments;” her even-more sophisticated Tough Love (2014); and last year's experimental Glasshouse, a collection so deeply personal she tells me she wants to turn around and record a full album of escapist club music next. Though jet-lagged, Ware discusses her plans to start watching RuPaul's Drag Race, her supportive friendship with Sam Smith, and how the queer community helped her through a very challenging time. Speaking of your brother, is he dating one of your gay fans yet?

96 | Hotspots.LGBT

No, he isn't dating one of my gay fans yet. But he was on tour with me and we were in Berlin, and I could see it was a really gay crowd. It was such a wild night, and I was like, “Listen, guys, my brother's looking fab tonight, it's Berlin, a lot of very handsome men out there; who would be up for taking my brother out?” It turns out that my brother had been on a date with one of them previously in the day, and Alex texted me after the show, “I don't need you to pimp me out. I'm ine.” But I have tried. There's been some admirers, but I de initely think he's enjoyed — I'm sure he's de initely used it to his advantage before. But no, we don't have a new guncle to add.

“Taking in Water,” a song from your irst album that's about your brother's struggle to come out, is so special and has meant a lot to many queer people. You're making me wanna put it back in the show. I haven't got it in the set. I haven't sung it for years, and I love that song. I remember how much people loved it, and you're making me think maybe I should practice it with my band.

I'm sure that would make a lot of gay people very happy. By the way, I hear there's been some wig-snatching going on

at these performances. Oh my goodness, the wig snatching has been a revolution and also so fun.

Didn't someone throw a wig on stage at your Manchester show? I've had multiple wigs, thongs, bras. The irst wig I accidentally dragged around with my heels like a dead cat. I hadn't seen it come on the stage, and then I walked around with it. It kind of ruined the wig-snatching moment; it wasn't as fabulous as it could have been. But it did make everyone laugh.

need to watch it because I had to Google what “wig snatching” meant, and it was kind of embarrassing. It made me feel very straight and very old.

You kept Whitney and Barbra vinyls in the recording studio while making Devotion. For Glasshouse, which divas were guiding you? I think spiritual guides for Glasshouse were probably Carole King and Nina Simone, even

I had to Google what 'wig snatching' meant. It made me feel very straight and very old.”

A wig is one thing, but what prompts a fan to throw a thong on stage? I don't know if they're all just trying to entertain me and they know I ind it hysterical… but you know, it's not just gay men — I think maybe that was from a gay woman, and that was fabulous.

Or a drag queen. Or a drag queen! Absolutely. I'd kind of love it to be from a drag queen, but I didn't see any in the audience. When the song “Midnight” [the irst single from Glasshouse] came out, I had been away [from touring] for a bit. I came back and “Midnight” was this kind of ierce diva moment for me. I really sang out, and I think my fans really enjoyed it. The online world has always been pretty positive for me, but just hysterical — memes and gifs. I feel like such a fucking old woman! It was just so fun, and I didn't know what wig snatching was. It comes from RuPaul's Drag Race, right? And I feel really bad because RuPaul has always been really sweet. From the beginning, RuPaul would retweet videos of mine, and I think some contestants have performed some of my songs on the show. So, I

though you probably can't hear that in the record. And Joni Mitchell. I really got obsessed with the art of songwriting. That was something I felt I needed to improve upon, and I really appreciate what [those artists] were doing.

When we spoke in 2012, you couldn't quite explain why the queer community connected with you. Six years later, has

Sam Smith is a devoted fan and has been tweeting about you since the beginning of your career. He's a really good friend of mine, and we're so proud of each other. He's so supportive. And I love that all his backstage shots are of him in, like, the highest heels — that I can't even wear — and a wig. Seems like every day he has a different wig and a different heel on. Above all, he's a really good friend. He's at the end of the phone [when I need him] — like I am for him when he has worries and he wants to complain about this bloody industry. It's a tough, old industry, and he's incredibly supportive, and I love him. I love him so much.

What industry challenges have you had to deal with? Sometimes the business side of the industry was [eclipsing] the creative side, and it took me to really just stop and be like, “I feel a little bit dead on the stage.” I was lacking con idence. I just had a baby; I thought people were going to judge, however stupid that sounds. It's a very male-led industry — straight, male-led industry — and they have opinions. And those seep into you whether you like it or not. I'm a pretty strong woman, I think, but you can't help but have that. You come back from having a baby, and I felt I had so much to prove. I had to kind of be — pretend to be — this superwoman who could do everything. It was just … it's been exhausting. This record was really important for me to write because it was documenting a stage in my life which was new. And I have all these emotions and feelings, and I think sometimes you feel a little bit dead, you run out of new feelings. Having a child was a

the root of that bond become clearer? If I'm being honest, I still don't know why they embrace me, but I enjoy it. It's been so important to my shows: It's given me energy, it's given me con idence. When I was a rabbit in the headlights [starting out] ive years ago, they gave me the con idence I needed to feel like I could go into — as much as it was maybe tongue in cheek for me — that diva mode, which I think they really celebrate. And I tried to do that for this show. It's almost escapism and it's fun, and that's how a live show should be. I'll never forget how loyal they've been; that counts as

I love that all Sam Smith's backstage shots are of him in, like, the highest heels — that I can't even wear — and a wig.”

different kind of love, which was so inspiring and amazing to write about, but also the most challenging. I think what's next for me is, I wanna make a record that's pure dance, and I think it's because of the queer community.

What, personally, inspired this upcoming dance detour? I think it's a reaction to doing something so autobiographical for this third record. I don't feel like I need to do that again. I wanna test myself — it's a challenge. I see the reaction to songs like “If You're Never Gonna Move” and “Midnight,” these more bombastic, uptempo things — I hate the word 'uptempo;' it doesn't make it sound as important — but I feel like I really wanna enjoy that soul boogie. Can I say 'disco'? I don't know.

Club music? Club music! Which is where I came from! Sometimes you kind of forget — I haven't forgotten where I came from. I have a lot of love for that world that embraced me at the beginning, and I feel like I wanna go back to it and enjoy it and dance.

Who are your dance divas? Chaka Khan. Any of the Whitney upbeat stuff. I love Ró isın ́ Murphy, I love Tina Marie.

Sounds like this album could help loosen you up. And I think that's what I need! This job is supposed to be fun, and sometimes you forget. It's something that especially the queer community will enjoy. I've done enough mid-tempo ballads. It's time for a bit of a switch-up.
