Based on the ground-breaking novel by Armistead Maupin, Tales of the City follows a colorful cast of characters living at 28 Barbary Lane in anythinggoes 1970s San Francisco. This is a good time to binge before the Netflix revival in 2019 with new episodes. Newly arrived in freewheeling 1970s San Francisco, wide-eyed Mary Ann Singleton (Laura Linney) quickly realizes just how far from Cleveland she really is. Moving into a funky house at 28 Barbary Lane—where her landlady (Olympia Dukakis) welcomes her with a joint—Mary Ann befriends the other residents and finds a good-natured home amid the drugs, drama, and debauchery.

John Cameron Mitchell's Latest Anthem
You'll Probably Want to Live in the House of Cardin Directors P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes of The Ebersole Hughes Company recently presented a work-inprogress trailer at Cannes for their authorized biographical documentary, House of Cardin, and France's Doc & Film quickly snapped up the worldwide rights. “Cardin
made clothes for astronauts; he put his stamp on perfume bottles, jets, cars and cigarettes.”
For fashion fans — and, really, for anyone who cares about how lifestyle branding took off after World War II — this is very good news. If, on

the other hand, you're quite young and the question on your mind is, “What is a Cardin?” then you're in for a dizzying education. Pierre Cardin, 95, French/Italian, gay, and still at work, is one of the 20th century's most influential designers. The man made clothes for everyone including astronauts; he put his stamp on perfume bottles and jets; he designed cars and cigarettes; he slapped his logo on his work before anyone else thought to do that, and he made so much money doing it that now he lives in a house that's shaped like bubbles (not making that up).
Here comes your next favorite podcast: Topic Studios, the people who produced Missing Richard Simmons, recently announced that they're partnering with Hedwig and the Angry Inch creator John Cameron Mitchell for a new musical anthology podcast called Anthem. The premise for the series will be neglected American stories, told by songwriters and storytellers working collaboratively, and that list of collaborators is impressive: Patti LuPone, Glenn Close, South African singer/songwriter Nakhane, Denis O'Hare, Laurie Anderson, Broadway star Simone (yes, the daughter of Nina Simone), Ben Foster, Justin Vivian Bond, Bridget Everett, and Bryan Weller, who is currently working with Cameron Mitchell on the upcoming film, How to Talk to Girls at Parties. The first season, Anthem: Homunculus, will tell a single story in ten 30-minute podcasts, perfect for bingeing — or that tedious commute home from work. The series is currently in production and will drop sometime later this year. Clear space on your playlist. Romeo San Vicente is still obsessed with the shape of that Cardin cologne bottle.
Equality Florida Calls On Businesses To Make Clear They Are #OpenToAll June 4, 2018 -- Equality Florida, the state's largest LGBTQ civil rights organization, released the following statement from Executive Director Nadine Smith following today's Supreme Court ruling in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission: “Today's United States Supreme Court ruling in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case is a mix of good news and bad. “The good news is while the court sided, in part, with the baker, the ruling is very narrow and specific to the Colorado case, and the Supreme Court actually reaffirmed nondiscrimination protections. This ruling does not give businesses a license to discriminate. “The bad news is that those who do seek to discriminate against the LGBTQ community will be emboldened further by this ruling. We can expect to see more discriminatory legislation as extremists continue their attacks in the courts and the legislature. “Right now, we need businesses large and small to make clear that they stand on the side of equality. "Business can boldy show they are open to all by visiting EqualityFlorida.org/OpenToAll to receive a special window decal. “The bottomline: Don't spend money with companies that refuse to stand up for equality.” Have it signed: Nadine Smith, Executive Director

Thirsty Dads Gold Bar Whiskey
$45 for 750mL GoldBarWhiskey.com The inspiration for Gold Bar Whiskey struck 11 years ago when the founder's friends told him he was a dreamer and would need a few gold bars to finance his own whiskey company. At that moment, the concept of the “gold-bar bottle” was born. This is an ultra-premium blended whiskey from California's Napa Valley with a final mash bill of approximately 88% corn, 9% rye, and 3% barley (hence the '889 Blend').
Nemiroff Vodka
$18 for 750mL, Nemiroff.vodka From a historic distillery in Ukraine's land of 1,000 lakes comes this award-winning vodka made with local wheat and artesian water (filtered through minerals that are more than 540 million years old!). This is the stuff everybody was sipping in Lady Gaga's “Bad Romance” video. For extra kick, try the Honey Pepper version, which just won “Vodka of the Year” in the 2018 London Spirits Competition.

Six-time Tony-winner Audra McDonald just dropped a new album with the New York Philharmonic, but you can catch her with just her trio at The Broward Center.
“I would like to do some more Shakespeare."
N
o one has won more Tony Awards for Broadway performances than Audra McDonald, who's racked up an incredible six since 1994. She's also the only person to win Tonys in four dierent acting categories. Add to that her two Grammy Awards, an Emmy, and a National Medal of Arts (Thanks, Obama!), and it's easy to understand why I was fan-girling out during our interview. Of course, even if I didn't know McDonald had ever won an award, I'm sure I would have been just as psyched for our chat. Because I've see her on stage. McDonald has the voice of an angel and the acting chops of a born performer; the combination is unstoppable! It was a pleasure to sit down with McDonald, just a few weeks before her performance at the Broward Center.
At what age did you realize you wanted to be an entertainer? Fairly early, about 9. My parents had encouraged me to audition for a dinner theater. I auditioned, go it, and got bit by the bug. What was your irst professional/paid gig? The dinner theater: I got paid $10 a week. There are so many milestones in a performer's life. Getting into Juilliard had to be one of those for you. Do you remember how it felt when you found out you'd been accepted? I didn't believe it. I thought I had blown the audition, and I lew back home. When I received a call from Juilliard the following Monday, I thought they were calling me about a fee I may not have paid. When they told me I was accepted, I was shocked. When was your irst time on a Broadway stage? Did you know you were home? Yes, I knew. I understudied for a tiny role in The Secret Garden [in 1991]. I knew I was at home when I rehearsed the irst time, and the lead turned around and asked, "Who's that new voice in the background?" The lead was Rebecca Luker. How did it feel when you won your irst Tony in 1994? It was completely surreal. It felt like I was watching it all happen to someone else. Carol Channing was in the front row, and she had a huge smile on her face. When I looked at her, it grounded me.

You're the most decorated Tony performer of all time. Does winning get easier? Yes and no. You have no power over any of it, so the more you can let go, the better you are. Do you have a favorite role? I don't. I look at all my roles as if they were children of mine. They've all been very important to me and taught me something. Do you have a fantasy role? I would like to do some more Shakespeare. You've garnered a lot of praise over your career. Last summer Ben Brantley, theater critic for The New York Times, wrote, "She is probably the most talented person on this planet." How does one react to that? I can't. I think it's untrue and incredibly lattering. Sing Happy, your new album [out last week], is your irst solo recording with full orchestra, the New York Philharmonic. How was the
“My concerts feel very intimate, like we're hanging out in the living room, getting to know each other." process different from recording an album in a studio? In some ways it's easier: You just go out on stage and perform, and it's done. But there was more pressure since I knew [the performance] was being recorded. I, for one, can't wait for your show at The Broward Center on June 13. What should our readers expect? My concerts feel very intimate, like we're hanging out in the living room, getting to know each other. The concert will feature a lot of music off the new album and, of course, some old stuff: Sondheim, Rodgers and Hammerstein, a tribute to Barbara Cook, and much more.
Catch Audra McDonald on Wednesday, June 13 at 8pm at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts' Au-Rene Theater (201 SW 5th Ave, Ft Lauderdale). For tickets ($25–$145), visit BrowardCenter.org. 54 | Hotspots.LGBT

Diplomas toDollas 10 Essential Money Tips for New LGBT Grads
H
ere's the good news, freshly minted graduates: You're not as financially inept as the media portrays you. Stash, the beginner investment app, asked grads like you what they plan to do with their graduation money, and the results are comforting. The largest percentage, 23.8% of those polled, plan to put the haul directly into savings, while 21% will pay rent or other expenses. An impressive 19.2% plan to invest their grad cash, and a near equal number, 18.7%, said they'll pay down student loans with the money. That's a great start. But there's plenty more to learn about savvy spending and saving, now that you're out in the real world. Here are 10 essential tips to help you hit the ground running.
58 | Hotspots.LGBT
1. Commit to independence
1
No more asking for help. Sorry! One month after you land your first decent job is when you need to make a clean financial break from the welfare providers you call parents. That gives you enough time to get your proverbial ducks in a row — and collect your first paycheck — so you can really start adulting. Mobile bill, car payment and insurance, gas, utilities, internet, groceries, rent — all that good stuff — should now be your responsibility if you have a job. And no hitting up mom and pop for extra cash because you spent all your disposable income buying Fireball shots for a future one-night stand. For starters, that swill is poison, and two, he probably would have gone home with you $30 ago.
2. Stop wasting money on stupid things.
2
Millennials and lazy people around the world (along with their enablers) lost their ever-loving hive minds last year when the “avocadotoast guy” (as he will be forever known) suggested in the pages of GQ that just maybe they should stop spending money on overpriced food trends and other luxuries if they ever want to afford a home. Certainly there are prevailing factors preventing young people in a variety of demographics from becoming homeowners, but I happen to agree with that GQ writer on this particular point. So, here's my advice to curb that practice: If you want to get ahead, especially if you're on a tight budget, it's critical to have self-control, say no to all the shiny things, and concentrate more on making extra cash instead of spending what little you have. You're not entitled to anything you didn't earn, and the world doesn't owe you anything. The faster you learn that, the happier your heart (and wallet) will be.
3. Make a monthly budget — and then stick to it — as if your life depends on it. If you're new to managing your own money, the best place to begin is with a budget. There's a wealth of resources online to help you get started. The concept is simple: In one column list your income; in the other, keep track of your expenses; and then crunch a few numbers to make sure everything balances out or, if you're lucky, results in a surplus. Negative numbers in a budget are no bueno, but you already know that, degree holder. Sounds like a hassle, but only if you like being broke all the time.
3

4. Become a coupon and cash-back queen.
4
Along with clipping coupons for groceries and other purchases, tap into cash-back savings on apps like Ibotta, Checkout 51, and SPENT, which offers up to 25-percent cash back on your favorite brands; use in-store apps like Target's Cartwheel; cut costs on activities with daily deals; identify days and nights that offer the best discounts on whatever you plan to buy (like buy-one-get-one free meals at restaurants, for example); and plan clothes-shopping trips around major sales — paired with loyalty points and discounts. I often pay pennies on the dollar because of my dedication to saving money, and you can too if you make it part of your routine.
One month after you land your first decent job is when you need to make a clean financial break from the welfare providers you call parents.
6. Refinance all those student loans. Most new grads have student loans. They'll be more manageable — and seem like less of a burden — if you refinance as soon as possible. “Refinancing your loans is one of the best options to pay off your student loans faster and more cost-efficiently,” says Carla Dearing, CEO of SUM180, an online financial wellness service designed to make financial planning simple and affordable. “When you refinance your student loans, you'll have one consolidated loan with a single monthly payment and a lower interest rate, which is important, as more of each payment goes toward paying down the balanced owed. Companies like SocialFinance (sofi.com) have a strong refinancing offering.” For more ideas, check out “The Ultimate Guide to Paying Off Student Loans Faster” at StudentLoanHero.com.
5. Avoid carrying credit card balances. When you know how to use them responsibly, credit cards can be your friend. They'll help you build a respectable credit score when you swipe and then pay on time (preferably more than the minimum payment; ideally, paying the entire balance each month), but they also can rip you a new one if you're regularly spending more than you can repay within a month.
5

“Many people get into a bad habit of using credit to buy things, or to maintain a lifestyle,” says Jeff White, finance writer at FitSmallBusiness.com. “In many cases, these habits are created soon after graduation because of the credit card offers out there for new grads that have secured jobs. While having credit accounts can benefit your borrowing position and total credit score, keeping balances on them will not help you. Use credit cards, but make sure you're using them as part of your budget, and pay them off each month.”
7. Keep your health care covered. You should not forgo health insurance for any reason. One little trip to the hospital can leave you deep in debt Fortunately, those monster bills can be avoided — if you're insured. Right now you're probably covered under your parents' family plan until your 26th birthday. That works for some recent grads but not all. If you're planning to live in a city that's beyond the provider network for your parents' plan, it may make sense to buy your own coverage to keep costs down. eHealth, a leading, private, online health insurance exchange, provides tips to help you navigate this tricky fact of life, including information on how to enroll in health insurance, short-term health coverage, and financial assistance resources that may be available to you.
7
8.Create a savings plan that makes sense for your current situation. Try to save wherever you can (including putting money into an emergency fund), but when you're on a tight budget, it's important to focus on the present. Pay your monthly student loan bill first, then stash a little away. If you're already stretched thin, that 401k your company offers may have to wait a bit. You'll get there eventually, but you don't want to dig a deeper debt hole by having 401k deductions leave you with so little take-home pay that you're missing loan and credit-card payments and racking up late fees.
8
9. Learn the difference between good debt and bad debt. Various debts you carry have different implications. TopCashback's personal finance expert Natasha Rachel Smith explains. “Good debt is an investment that has the potential to grow in value or can generate long-term income,” she says. “Well-negotiated car loans/payments, mortgages, and low-rate student loans are considered good debt. It is perfectly OK to accrue debt when it is good debt. Bad debt involves purchases that quickly lose their value or do not generate income. High-rate debts, frivolous spending, and credit cards with high-interest rates are bad debt. You want to avoid accruing bad debt, as it could severely impact your credit score. Focus on paying your long-term good debt and minimize your bad debt.”
9
10. Stop trying to keep up with the Joneses on social media.
10
To those who are independent and work hard for whatever they have, life doesn't come easy. With that in mind, you're doing yourself a huge disservice by comparing your life to that of others. Keep dreaming and setting goals for yourself — whatever they may be — but don't let your success depend on what you have or don't have, especially when you don't have it. Beating yourself up about a financial situation that you can't snap your fingers to improve will only stress you out while crushing your motivation to keep climbing.

Pridelines Unity Coalition Presenta Exhibición de Héroes LGBTQ |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Con Adora & Teddy Behr
Adora: ¡DIOS MIO!

Adora: OMG! What a cool event at Pridelines; They have a great artsy warehouse space, perfect for exhibitions and events…I'm so glad they're 66 | Hotspots.LGBT

doing art exhibits…and especially this one, about the Stonewall Riot in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, one of New York's only gay bars back in 1969, when police raided the place …and the drag queens said:”ENOUGH IS ENOUGH” and fought back, refusing to be arrested and hauled away in paddy wagons—just for dressing in drag and frequenting an openly gay bar. Teddy Behr: It seems hard to believe things were that bad back then; we've made a lot of progress, both legally, with same-sex marriage, and also in terms of acceptance by the non-LGBTQ public. But it was a half a century ago...pretty long time actually. We still have homophobia, discrimination and even internalized homophobia, but the awareness is so much greater, and each new generation of kids coming up builds on the one before it, so progress continues… I loved seeing Marsha Johnson in the series of portraits in the show. She was still around in the late '80's in New York when I was a student, and her portrait was done by Andy Warhol too. Marsha was at the Stonewall Riot and started a group called The Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries. When you saw Marsha on the street, she was always smiling; but you knew she was somebody important.
Adora: I'm so glad they did this exhibit about our LGBTQ history over the past 50 years. Not just for the younger people that Pridelines is geared to help, but for all of us to see, and to be reminded of. There were people at the opening event who talked about the AIDS crisis that started in the 1980s and continues now, even though it's no longer a death sentence. So many suffered and died… when survivors talk about it now, it sounds practically like a raging war…. and then there were people like Liz Taylor, who spoke up in defense of people with AIDS; I loved seeing her portrait there because I know that when she spoke up, a lot of people listened to her and heard her sense of compassion, instead of just the fear and hysteria. Teddy Behr: AIDS isn't gone any more than discrimination, but it is a lot less serious than it used to be, and this exhibit is also a reminder of that… people can easily think that just because something isn't talked about that it doesn't exist… that's dangerous, and especially for the kids coming up now, who haven’t seen how bad it is… still now.
Lilly & Lana Wachowski
Adora: Mmmmm…we have to keep aware that the rate of new HIV infections in South Florida is among the highest in the country; it doesn't t have to be anymore—we have free condoms everywhere, a new drug that prevents infection, and lots of info about how to avoid infection... PAY ATTENTION GUYS!!! But have fun too!! UNITY COALITION sponsored the show, and Herb Sosa has added the portrait series with the explanations of the roles each person played in advancing LGBTQ rights... it's at: www.unitycoalition.org/summerof69… in case you can t get over to Pridelines. Check it out: See who the people were who paved the way for us, and see how they did it… It's really cool to see the courage they had. Teddy Behr: Hey, I found a really good video on the History Channel on the Stonewall Riots and how they sparked a gay liberation movement..It really tells the story of the ways police and society systematically discriminated and oppressed LGBTQ people: until they stood up and refused to take it anymore. Every LGBTQ person should see it, and know our history. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Yes, mental-health care is important. But conversion therapy is mental abuse, not care. It's astounding to me that people like Matt Barber, founder of conservative “news” site BarbWire.com, call themselves Christians while preaching not only intolerance but hate. And then they turn around and claim that anyone who disagrees with them wants to ban Christianity. During a recent conversation with evangelical activist (and former Congressman) Gordon James Klingenschmitt, Barber gave props to Luis Ruiz, a Pulse Nightclub shooting survivor who has declared himself ex-gay. “I love this story,” said Barber, “because it's a story of redemption and freedom from demonic oppression and persecution and a sin lifestyle that I believe frankly is spiritual in nature.”
Note that what Barber loves isn't that Ruiz survived one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. He loves that Ruiz its his anti-gay narrative. Klingenschmitt and Barber warned that if conversion therapy is banned, then Ruiz could be arrested for talking about his ex-gay experience. This is not true. I don't know Ruiz. I don't really care how he identi ies. I'm not the boss of him. But it's pretty striking that folks like Barber look at the Pulse shooting and see the problem as the guy dancing with another guy, not the guy with a gun.
People like Matt Barber call themselves Christians while preaching not only intolerance but hate.

Sun, Sand, Sexy Working on your summer body doesn't stop when summer begins. by Tom Bonanti
S
ummer is an ideal time to beefup your workouts or begin a new and challenging routine that will net results. Whether you're a seasoned athlete, weekend warrior, or a newbie to the fitness craze, this more relaxed season of sun and fun provides a great opportunity for you to fine tune your fitness lifestyle. Here are some practical reminders.
Don't Sleep on Sleep. If you're really hitting the gym hard plus doing regular cardio to burn fat, strengthen your heart and lungs,

and build muscle, you've got to make time for rest and recovery. Skimping on sleep and giving into stress can increase the levels of cortisol and estrogen in your system, and that can lead to an increase in deep abdominal fat, reduced muscle mass, and fatigue. So, relax this summer and sleep — eight to ten hours a night.
Go Heavy on the H2O. You should be chugging water and staying hydrated, especially if you're working or exercising outdoors in the heat. The International Sports Sciences Association recommends eight to ten 8-ounce glasses of water per day — more if you're really active.
To keep things interesting, try throwing a few slices of fresh fruit into your water bottle for added flavor and Vitamin C. You could also consider heating things up: Freshly brewed green tea is a powerful antioxidant that's good for your skin and can help stave off cancer. A cup of chamomile tea at night can help you sleep.
Skimping on sleep and giving into stress can increase the levels of cortisol and estrogen in your system, and that can lead to an increase in deep abdominal fat, reduced muscle mass, and fatigue.
Remember: Walking Is Cardo. If walking is your cardio workout of choice, pick up your pace and you'll likely burn 25% more calories.
Try interval training three times a week for 30 minutes. Yes, interval training for walking. It's not just for cross fit and the stationary bike. Interval training alternates brisk walking with shorter intense periods of jogging, running, calisthenics, etc. When walking as a workout, your intensity should be such that you can only speak a few words at a time. Carry 5- or 10-lb dumbbells with you to up your intensity.
Lift, Bro. Moderate- to high-intensity weight training twice a week is a great place to begin. The more muscle you carry, the more calories and fat you burn all the time. If you're already lifting regularly, try adding an extra hour a week of weight
training to your workouts. Use the extra time you have this summer to try different freeweight routines and new machines in your gym — or at a friend's.
Eat Smart, Eat Often. Looking fit and feeling healthy is about 65% good nutrition. Never skip breakfast. Whether it's a smoothie, a couple of eggs and toast, or a steamy cup of oatmeal, your morning meal can determine how much get-up-and-go you exhibit all day. To keep your body from storing fat, instead of large meals, eat smaller meals/snacks every two to three hours. Never eat within three hours of retiring for the night. Eat lighter this summer by incorporating more fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish into your diet. Eliminate as much fat, processed food, and junk as you can.
