Did Tom of Finland Just Call Me Gurl? MASK4MASK Don’t be frontin’. We all know “S&M” is short for “Stand & Model.”

he men in Tom of Finland's art have always been the pinnacle of masculinity: bad boys, bikers, soldiers, jocks, cops, cowboys, leathermen, and lifeguards, all of them impressively jacked, impossibly hung, and ready for sex at the drop of a… soap. But a recent Tom collaboration, a t-shirt design, seems to winkingly acknowledge that, for most of us, at least, hypermasculinity is just a pose. The tees are a collaboration between the Tom of Finland Foundation and Lockwood51, the queer-friendly L.A. skatewear company whose motto is “Stay Queer AF.” (I'm being demure here; they spell it out). Lockwood51 is known for its punk attitude and for taking the piss out of heritage brands (and bands) by hijacking their logos and slogans for its t-shirts, skateboards, hats, and swimwear and putting a gay spin on them. “Enjoy Coke” becomes “Enjoy Cock,” “Budweiser” becomes “Buttwiser,” “FAG” is spelled out in Fila script, and punk band Black Flag's logo of four vertical bars (designed by

20 | Hotspots.LGBT

artist Raymond Pettibon) appears sandwiched between the words “Big” and “Fag.” You get the picture: The game is queering mainstream and masculine icons. Tom of Finland's gods of testosterone get similarly tweaked. On the new tees, available in girly shades of pink, baby blue and lavender, a familiar image of three leatherman has the phrase “Butch Please” slapped on it — a sly take on “Bitch, please.” — and an eye-rolling reminder that leather is just as queer as drag. Strike that. Leather is drag. Just ask RuPaul. The best part of all of this is that the Tom of Finland Foundation is in on the joke. The tees are authorized, and a portion of the proceeds go to the Foundation, which preserves and promotes Tom's work as well as other erotic art and “promotes healthier, more tolerant attitudes about sexuality.” What could be healthier than not taking ourselves too seriously? —Bill Henning Lockwood51 X Tom of Finland t-shirts, $38, tomoffinlandstore.com

Chapter and Verse Literary Looks and Self-penned Solos in episode 12 |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

E

by Scott Holland

pisode 12 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 got off to a fast start with Ru informing the remaining four queens that there would only be a Maxi Challenge this week — a single test that would determine which of them would make the Top 3. Ru then went on to explain that they would have to employ their Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent as they perform to her new song entitled “American.” Each girl would also have to write and record her own solo verse and perform challenging choreography by the one and only Todrick Hall. As if that wasn't difficult enough, they also would all have to make a guest appearance on Ru's podcast with Michelle Visage. The runway theme for the week was Eleganza Extravaganza, and the looks were fierce. Aquaria wore a traditional evening gown with an Aquarian flare (think: a little nudity, in all the right places). Asia worked an Egyptian gown in Tiffany blue and gold (think: Queen Tut reborn). Kameron chose a nude-illusion AB-stoned gown in lavender (looked GORG). And last, but not least, Eureka turned out a white, beaded

Hotspots.LGBT | 34

gown with the word “Eureka” emblazoned on the front and… its definition spelled out on the back. For a hat, she wore a book decorated with light bulbs, explaining that when Thomas Edison discovered electricity, he cried out “Eureka.” Ru then asked each queen two questions, as she normally does at this point in the show. The first was: What advice would you give your younger self if you could? The answers were all real and emotional. The second question was: Why should you be crowned America's Next Drag Superstar? The four answers were all very different — and all very good, each girl's personality shining through on her response. The competition was so tight, Ru decided to eliminate… nobody. So, there will be a Top 4 vying for the crown during the finale in two weeks. (Next week is the reunion show.) Since I've done these exit interviews for years, people are always asking me who I think will win. Check out next week's Hotspots as I rank the four survivors and spell out in print (not beads) who I think will win. And who I want to win.

JACKIE, OH! Lesbian comic Tig Notaro (left) will play the wife of first woman president Jennifer Aniston (right) according to Notaro's script for First Ladies.

Jennifer Aniston and Tig Notaro Will Be First Ladies "Jennifer Aniston is very attractive… and I was just like, hey, how about…we're married," says lesbian comic Tig Notaro (One Mississippi). And now they are. Or will be on film, anyway. The premise — one that Aniston agreed to based on nothing more than a pitch —

If Notaro's given the chance to do it her way, very funny material happens.

is part of an in-progress script called First Ladies, and it involves Aniston as the first woman president and Notaro

as her wife. It came about when Notaro and her reallife wife and screenwriting partner, Stephanie Allynne, joked with each other about running for office. Then it became an idea for a movie, and then Jennifer Aniston said yes, and then Will Ferrell jumped on board, too. This is not the normal way projects come to life in Hollywood, but Notaro has been on a bit of a roll of late, in spite of One Mississippi's cancellation, and if she's given the chance to do it her way, very funny material happens. This one could take a couple years to see movie screens, but it's a reason to keep on living.

Amandla Stenberg Talks "Salty" Reshoots for The Hate U Give A film about systemic racism fires a cast member for racism. You can't make up this stuff, and it happened recently to the film adaptation of Angie Thomas's National Book Award-finalist YA novel The Hate U Give. The story of a young girl (Amandla Stenberg) who witnesses a close friend's murder by police, and who then gravitates toward the Black Lives Matter movement, the film from George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food) was in the can when it came to light that supporting actor Kian Lawley, a YouTube star, had posted videos with racist language. He was fired and replaced with Riverdale's Archie, K.J. Apa, and Stenberg — who identifies as pansexual, nonbinary, and prefers the

Raising the Bar As Twist celebrates its 25th year, we size up the club's secret weapon: its bartenders.

Photography by Dale Stine exclusively for Hotspots

I

n the nightclub industry, it's rare to ind a venue celebrating ive years in business, let alone 25. But Twist will be doing just that on Wednesday, June 27. Owners Richard Trainor and Joel Stedman have assured me that this will be a party for the ages. “In our wildest dreams, we never thought Twist would go 25 years,” says Trainor. “It's been an extreme honor to be part of this community for so very long. We could have never done it without our amazing crew. But of course, we owe everything to our fantastic guests, who join us day after day, night after night from around the world. May the lights never go dim, let's keep the party going forever.” It sounds like the anniversary blowout this week will make a good start on that goal. Complimentary cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will be lowing when the doors open at 9pm. The irst 200 guests will also receive a special 25thanniversary DVD, mixed and produced by everyone's favorite Twist VJ, Nathan P. Smith. Collectors' items! The evening will also feature special performances by many of the stars who have made Twist so successful over the last quarter century. Resident DJ Sushiman will provide the music for the evening, and there will be shows by the infamous TP Lords in the main room. Downstairs in the Latin Room, Jose ina and cast will be bringing the laughs with La Fiesta de la Croqueta Comedy Show. But not all the stars will be found on stage

Wednesday night. “We've always thought that no matter who you hire as

“May the lights never go dim, let's keep the party going forever.” entertainment, it's really the bartenders that are some of your biggest stars,” says Stedman. “Nathan has been with us nearly 20 years and Mario more than 10. This is a classy team that brings it every night they work. Derek started out as a bar back when I was bartending many years ago, and we've been working together ever since. Derek and relative newcomer David create a unique team that keeps their guests giggling all night. Aquiles started very young and has grown into a real star. Antonio and Aquiles have made a sensational team in the Bar 5 Latin Room that has proven to be super popular. We celebrate all of our great teams of bartenders that make it happen night after night.” We sat down with a few of these superstars behind the bars.

“Martinis are my favorite because you gotta put your hips into it when you shake.” —David

David and Derek behind the bar

David, Cocktail Bar

What's it been like working with Derek all these years? Derek's greatest quality is that he is genuine. De initely one of a kind. I'm happy to work alongside him each week. He's been an amazing friend. How did you get your bartending job? I applied at an open casting and was chosen out of many applicants. I got lucky. How long have you been there? Nearly seven years now. What's the best thing about working at Twist? My favorite part of the job is meeting so many different people from all over. And having a family relationship with my coworkers. Tell us something people would be surprised to ind out about you?

I'm a geek but not a nerd. Your bar is now smoke-free after 10pm. How's that going? Personally, it's amazing. I'll probably live longer. I think most people expect a nonsmoking environment. Since our bar is in the irst room you enter at Twist and it's nonsmoking, people don't think twice about it. Twist has a place for everyone. What's your favorite drink to make and why? Martinis are my favorite because you gotta put your hips into it when you shake. A perfect pour makes for bragging rights and smiles all around. What's the best pick-up line you've heard across the bar? My favorite is, “Are you from Tennessee? Because you're the only 10 I see!”

Hotspots.LGBT | 49

Derek, Cocktail Bar

How long have you worked alongside David? Nearly ive years now. What's that been like? It's been a blast. We get along so well. We have a lot of fun and we take care of each other. We've got each other's back. How did you get your bartending job? One of our managers, John Roberts, was a friend of mine. He introduced me to Joel, who was bartending at the time, and I met Richard Trainor. What's the best thing about working at Twist? The feeling of family among the staff — and getting to meet new people from around the world. I love working here! What's your favorite drink to make and why? I love making Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, Long Island Ice Teas, Cape Cods, Cube Libres, and Margaritas. And opening bottles of beer! What's the best pick-up line you've heard across the bar? So many pick-up lines! “Is your momma a chicken? Because you're eggcellent.” “Are you sure you're not a parking ticket? Because you've got ine written all over you.” I like the funny ones that make me laugh. The really good ones will even give me the giggles when I think about them later.

Nathan, Video Bar

How long have you worked alongside Mario? Almost a decade. He did move to New York for three years, but we never stopped communicating so I never really count that time apart. What's working with him been like? It's been great. There's nothing like forming a true friendship at work and having that relationship lourish outside of work as well. When Mario and I are together behind the bar, we work really well together. And at the end of our shift, we have the best time joking and letting go of all the stress. How long have you been at Twist? I've worked here for 18 years as of June 16. What's the best part of working there? I've grown up here. Literally. And Richard Trainor has guided me in work and in life. Honestly, he's been one of my main supports, and that makes

50 | Hotspots.LGBT

“I've grown up here. Literally.” —Nathan

Nathan and Mario taking a break

Twist feel like my second home. I am a very lucky man to be able to say that. Tell us something people would be surprised to ind out about you? I'm a homebody, I live for my three Italian Greyhounds and my cat. Most people believe bartenders are wild and crazy people, but I'm the complete opposite. What's your favorite drink to make and why? My favorite drink to make — and I know my fellow bartenders will not agree — is a Mojito. I love sweet drinks, and I make a killer Loaded Mojito. It goes down smooth but has a kick to it. What's the best pick-up line you have heard across the bar? I have yet to hear a good pick-up line. I think when a true connection is made a pick-up line is not necessary.

Even lesbian Jesuses get swept up by the grandeur of the Statue of Liberty. “I've never seen it before! It's huge! Oh my god, it's huge!” enthuses a giddy-as-ever Hayley Kiyoko, proclaimed “the lesbian Jesus” by her adoring disciples. The unapologetic pop fixture can't help but check out of our conversation to soak up the moment, her driver cruising over a bridge in New York City. “It's on my left. I had to, like, gasp. Oh my god, it's so cool.” The 27-year-old singer is doing a string of press calls to tout her debut album, Expectations, and though I've understandably lost her to a colossal Neoclassical monument, Kiyoko eventually remembers why she's on the phone in the first place: oh, right, music. Kiyoko's DIY solo music career launched in 2013, when her partially crowdfunded debut EP, A Belle to Remember, was released. This Side of Paradise followed in 2015 and featured “Girls Like Girls.” The single's video, which has amassed more than 92 million views on YouTube (collectively, her self-directed videos have eclipsed 180 million views), took a hard, unflinching look at the challenges of facing same-sex desire. Kiyoko released her third EP, CITRINE, in 2016, which included single “Gravel to Tempo”; in the song's video, she leaves a group of mean girls speechless with her seductive dance moves. “Curious,” a single from her first full-length, released in March on Atlantic Records, is as brazenly sensual as any straight pop star's lustfulness. And the newly dropped video for the latest single “What I Need,” a duet with Kehlani, features the two photogenic, budding pop stars on a Sapphic road trip à la Thelma & Louise. While taking in the historic NYC views, Kiyoko opened up to me about letting her music tell her queer story (even when it came to coming out to her grandma) and the “gentle and vulnerable and emotional” bond she has with her fans. {Editor's note: Fans can catch Kiyoko (with Panic! at the Disco) at The BB&T Center in Sunrise on Tuesday, July 31.]

I’m gonna own this and I’m gonna own who I am.

Your 94-year-old grandma recently discovered you're lesbian thanks to one of your music videos. What was that like? [Laughs.] It's funny: I've just been gently sending her videos I've been directing, but I don't know if she's been watching them or not, because that was the first time she responded directly about my music. I still don't know what video she watched, but with every video, it's very obvious that I like girls, so I feel like the cat's out of the bag — finally. Which videos of yours would be a good gay conversationstarter for grandmas to watch? [Laughs.] I feel like “Girls Like Girls” is a good introduction. Tell me how you came to be so open about your sexuality as a pop musician. It's just been baby steps. I did the “Girls Like Girls” music video, which was the introduction; still, people didn't really know where I was at. Then, I released “Gravel to Tempo.” Every video I'm wanting to challenge myself and tell a different story and [show] a different

perspective on a situation that I've experienced. Now, obviously, looking back at all these videos, it tells a very solidified story. I like girls, and I was never… as you know, it's a difficult thing to want to be open about because it's very personal. It's something you don't feel like you need to share, but I've connected with so many people through it. I've kind of had to really own it and feel confident about it because I realize there aren't a lot of people who do that. So, you have to lead by example, and that's the best way to help normalize those feelings. That's always been my goal: just to normalize things and not have it be a conversation. I always told my manager: “I don't want to come out. I just want people to watch my art and take it for what it is.” Talk about some of the queer themes on this album and how your life inspired those songs. I have a song “He'll Never Love You (HNLY).” It 56 | Hotspots.LGBT

talks about a situation I was in where this girl wanted to be with me but was too afraid to own her sexuality, so I had to let that person go. It was always a frustrating situation because I knew how she felt, but you can't encourage anyone to love themselves. That's a journey on their own. When, as a public figure, did you first feel 100 percent comfortable being open about your sexuality? Probably the music video after “Girls Like Girls,” “Cliff's Edge.” You can't argue with what's going on in that video. [Laughs.] So, that was definitely a moment where I was like, “I'm gonna own this and I'm gonna own who I am,” because, to be honest, I've always known who I was. But sharing that with the world is another level of pressure, I would say. How would you compare how you felt about your sexuality during “Girls Like Girls” versus “Cliff's Edge”? I almost didn't put “Girls Like Girls” on my EP. It was a very last-minute decision. And then I was seeing the reactions, and I didn't know what my next step was. I didn't really know where I was going with my career and what my message was. I made “Girls Like Girls” in a very honest place, just like every other video I do. But after you do something [like that], it's like, what do I do now? How did you gauge what was next regarding your queer music narrative? Do you have a team of queer people who are guiding you? No, I don't think that's a reality. [Laughs.] I mean, I don't know. I'm just being myself, and I really don't consult anyone. I just put it out. But a lot of pop acts have a team working with them. Oh, yeah. No, no, no. My team is my manager and my day-to-day. I have my team, but they're all straight [laughs] and they can't relate. So I go, “This is what I'm doing,” and then we do it.

There's nothing contrived or manipulated with what I do. It's really: Write a song; OK, I wanna shoot a music video; we create a music video; I do whatever I want with it; and then I decide when I wanna release it, and then I put it out on YouTube. That's really the process. I'm sure it's different for other artists, but I've always been extremely controlling with my art. And when I signed to Atlantic they knew that, so they let me do whatever I want to do. That control has probably been one of the reasons you've been able to connect with all these fans who call you their “lesbian Jesus.” Could you describe the connection you have with your queer fans? I think the connection is very gentle and vulnerable and emotional. Sometimes kids will say things to me that they've never said to anyone else. It's really an open space, and I think that they know I'm accepting of them. Are you the lesbian pop star you wished for when you were a struggling queer teen? I don't know. I guess I don't think about it that much. I'm not really looking at myself all the time in the sense of, look who I am. I'm like everyone else, just trying to get through life day to day. And I really want to get to a point in my career where people are just listening to my music and giving me an opportunity and a platform, so I don't really reflect, because I feel like I have so much to share. As a young person you were pretty hungry for representation, though. Oh, yeah, 100 percent. And there were some great acts out there that I loved, like Tegan and Sara, for example. I love them. But I didn't have a person where I was like, “She knows exactly what I'm going through, and we are connected.” I had icons and idols but not someone that I really connected with.

I always told my manager: 'I don't want to come out. I just want people to watch my art and take it for what it is.'

I read in The Guardian that Katy Perry's “I Kissed a Girl” influenced you. It did? I mean, I wouldn't say… I don't think I said it was an influence. They asked me what I thought about that [song], what my take on it was, because a lot of people were saying negative things. I have nothing negative to say. It reminded me, OK, there's Katy Perry singing about experimenting and kissing a girl, and that's great and I support that. I'm gonna be someone who likes girls all the time and sing about that. So, I thought it was a positive thing. I thought it was a step toward what I was gonna do down the line one day.

Take Me to Church With Scandals Closed (for Now), Lady Fancy Brings Her Gospel Jubilee to The Pub.

By Scott Holland

W

hen Wilton Manors' beloved countrywestern club Scandals Saloon closed its doors unexpectedly last month, it left me with two burning questions: Where would my boot scootin' friends go to party? And what would happen to Lady Fancy's Gospel Jubilee, the incredibly popular monthly celebration of good, old-fashioned southern gospel music. Luckily, I didn't have to wait long to have both my questions answered. New owners plan to have Scandals back in business before Independence Day, and Lady Fancy is moving the Jubilee over to The Pub Wilton Manors. Her first show is this Sunday, and I thought this would be the perfect time for me to sit down for a chat with Lady Fancy — and remind everyone why she's a queen we love. Can I get an amen?

Tell me about the first drag show you ever saw. It was in Indianapolis many years ago at their Pride day. A drag queen came riding down the street in a horse-drawn carriage, and when it stopped she performed [Christian music star Sandi Patty's 1988 single] “Indianapolis Indeed!,” which was absolutely perfect. I still love that song. I've performed it, off and on, through the years. When did you decide you wanted to do drag? Years ago my good friend and local drag queen Nancy Ross and I decided to put on a surprise drag show at her Christmas Party. We've always called ourselves “The Backyard Broads” because the party, and the show, was in her backyard. That's when it all started, and the rest is kind of history.

PHOTOS: Stephen R. Lang of Mark’s List

Who is your drag mother? My drag mother would have to be [Fort Lauderdale] drag queen and winner of countless titles, Sharde Ross. Besides Sharde, who is your favorite drag queen? My favorite would have to be Ruth Dix, an Indianapolis icon who passed away earlier this month. Ruth made drag fun. She would do anything to entertain you. She was not about just being pretty; Ruth was about being an entertainer. What's your favorite number to perform these days? My favorite number would have to be the gospel song “Born to Serve the Lord.” I was raised, rooted, and grounded in gospel music, and being able to perform this song in full drag means the message is still going forward, just in a different way. What's the best thing that's ever happened to you in drag? The friends I've made along the way, my drag sisters and brothers who have become my chosen family. We share a common bond as entertainers. We've experienced so many good times. And the things that go on in the dressing room? Lord, help us! What would you say differentiates you from other queens? I guess what makes me a little different is the Gospel Jubilee. It's truly a one-of-a-kind show. We have drag queens, we have real singers singing, and I usually play the piano at some point. At the beginning of every Gospel Jubilee show, I always say: “If you've come here expecting us to make fun or light of gospel music, you will be disappointed. We are here for one reason only, and that is to celebrate gospel music. So, have fun — and welcome to church of a different kind!” What does the future hold? Well, I guess the future for me will be to keep doing what I'm doing — and looking forward to where it may go. Remember, I'm not exactly a spring chicken, so if something big is gonna happen, it better hurry up!

Why We Love Her! She discovered drag late in life but carved out her own niche. She gives back to the community. She created Gospel Jubilee, sold the concept to Monkey Business, then moved it to Scandals, and has now hauled it over to The Pub since Scandals closed. She gives me old-school drag, which I just love!

“A drag queen came riding down the street in a horsedrawn carriage, and when it stopped, she performed 'Indianapolis Indeed!,' which was absolutely perfect.”

Adora: Wow, I loved the Stonewall National Museum & Archives. So glad we finally went up to see it, both the permanent collection and the current exhibit, “TransCuba,” by the photographer Mariette Pathy Allen. It's all kind of laid-back and easy. Teddy Behr: Yes, me too. It's small: set into two storefronts right on Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors, in the heart of the LGBTQ neighborhood. It feels really grassroots and kind of like the start of something that will become important over time, as our community starts to understand more and more the importance of our own history. They also have an archive on LGBTQ history in another location that isn't set up for exhibits but may be accessed for research.

Adora: I loved Allen's photos of trans people in Cuba. Since I haven't been back to Cuba in so long, it's great to get an idea of what's going on there. And the photos have a sweet, personal quality that I really liked; it's obvious that the photographer established a good connection with her subjects. Teddy Behr: And the permanent collection was cool: pics and posters and newspaper and magazine clippings of gay and lesbian life, and legal and social advancements going back decades. They extend all the way to the so-called “Gay Nineties,” the 1890s, when famous poets and writers like Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde, and Jose Martí were raising eyebrows by being more or less out. Adora: They also have a lot of newspaper clippings about AIDS. There's news about celebrities with AIDS, like Rock Hudson, where you can see the stigma that was

Alsola, Santiago de Cuba. attached to AIDS back in the early days. Other celebrities, like Liz Taylor and Princess Diana, came forward in defense of people with AIDS. They visited them in hospitals to try to show people not to be afraid, that people with AIDS were suffering enough without being marginalized just because they'd gotten sick. An AIDS diagnosis was

Malu con sus padres y hermana frente a su casa, Cienfuegos. 70 | Hotspots.LGBT

still considered a 'death sentence' at the time. There are also clippings about Ryan White, the Indiana teen with hemophilia who was kicked out of his middle school after being diagnosed with AIDS in late 1984. White went public to fight AIDS stigma, and Congress honored White's activism by passing the Ryan White CARE Act Program in 1990. Today, Ryan White Programs are the largest provider of services for people living with HIV/AIDS in the country. Teddy Behr: Mmmmmm, it's amazing to see how it all got going: Gay Pride parades (marches, really, in the beginning); the “Gay Liberation” movement, as it was called when it grew out of the 1960s counterculture; the sexual revolution of the '60s and '70s; and, of course, the Stonewall Riots in New York City 1969, which was by all accounts a pivotal moment for the whole movement — the event commemorated by the name of the museum.

Adora: And now we've finally moved on to include the most marginal people of all, people who haven't really had fair treatment even within our own community: the transgender community. It really makes sense to see the “TransCuba” show after taking in the Stonewall Museum's exhibits on the history of the Gay Liberation movement. These images of trans people in contemporary Cuba, where, as in a lot of less-developed countries, all the medical necessities of transitioning — whether it's the hormones, psychological support services, or surgeries — are really hard to come by, show that the struggle for equality continues. Teddy Behr: Allen's photographs have a really personal, empathetic feeling to them.

Charito, en su casa, con un cerdito de una semana de nacido, Camaguey Looking at a lot of images, especially some of the portraits, you feel as if you've really gotten to know the person inside. We have to be clear that coming out trans still takes waaaayyyy more courage than coming out gay or lesbian. Adora: The next exhibit is about the Nazi Holocaust and how LGBTQ people were forced to wear pink triangles on their jackets and then put into death camps along with Jews and Gypsies. I guess we'd better see that one too; after all; it happened back in the 1930s and '40s, not that long ago. Teddy Behr: Mmmmm, they say that history is repeated for those who fail to learn its lessons. So I guess, yeah… we better go see that exhibit too.

“TransCuba” continurá en exhibición hasta el 15 de Julio en el Stonewall National Museum & Archives (2157 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors). Para más información: stonewall-museum.org 72 | Hotspots.LGBT

However, what will likely happen now is that other suits challenging the civil rights of LGBTQ people will gain traction. We're in for an ugly ride and this should worry you. Short of getting yourself appointed to the Supreme Court, an important thing you can do is vote. Donald Trump is reshaping the judiciary by appointing judges completely hostile to LGBTQ

people, not to mention to people of color and women. So, basically, judges who are hostile to the majority of America. He must be stopped. The only way to do that is to elect a Democratic majority in Congress. Oh, and happy Pride Month! It turns out that the pot at the end of the rainbow is illed not with gold coins, but with cake. And by “cake” I mean civil rights, since this whole thing is about much more than cake. It's about whether LGBTQ people are equal citizens under the law. So vote for people who will make laws that protect us all. And, yeah, feel free to sneak in some bites of illicit cake. You deserve it.

ADF has been named a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and has a long history of trying to do really terrible things to hurt LGBTQ people.

HOT BODIES

Don t Stall Out

5 Surefire Ways to Overcome Those Frustrating Workout Plateaus by Tom Bonanti

E

very guy, no matter his age, wants to be strong and virile. When you start weight training, it's common to make impressive gains. The problem is, after a while your body adapts to the weights, the exercises, and all the stress you're putting on those fabulous muscles. Suddenly your growth plateaus,

84 | Hotspots.LGBT

and it seems like nothing you do can get the gain train back on track. How do you overcome this? Here are five strategies to prevent your growth from stalling so you keep getting stronger.

1. Work Every Angle. Never neglect training a muscle group just because “it's too hard” or you don't like the exercises. Most guys like pumping up biceps and pecs because those gains are easy — for you and everyone else — to see. Pushing through “leg day” is another more daunting prospect. Remember, the key to success in weight training is to work every muscle group to fatigue, safely and effectively, through using a variety of different exercises. That means legs, too! (Or whatever your least favorite muscle group is.) 2. Hit Stragglers First. It's always wise to work out your weakest (or most neglected) areas first.

If, for example, working legs is difficult — or the prospect doesn't exactly fill your head with happy thoughts — then work them on Mondays. Starting out your week rested and renewed after the weekend, it's easier to hit the gym with manly vigor and train your lower body with all the animal strength and intensity you can muster. To reward yourself for a killer leg workout, go over to the dumbbell or EZ-curl rack — that is, if you can walk — and work biceps to get a dynamite body pump from bottom to top. 3. Have a Battle Plan. Just getting to the gym may be enough for some guys. But if you crave sizeable gains, you've got to add structure to your program. Schedule your workouts into the week and don't miss them. Keep a journal, and record the exercises done, weights lifted, and reps cranked out, as well as notes on how you feel. Cycle (periodize) your training so that you work different muscle groups and combinations of muscle groups on different days. A sample schedule might be: Day 1, lower body and abdominals; Day 2, arms and shoulders; Day 3, chest and back.

There are certain free-weight exercises that are a must: Squats, deadlifts, and flat bench presses are essential.

specialization, but free weights are best for increasing muscle size, flexibility, and strength. Squats, deadlifts, and flat bench presses are essential to anyone's strength training program. Whether performed with a barbell or dumbbells, these fail-safe lifts improve brute strength by stimulating production of testosterone and growth hormone. You'll also cut your body fat in the process!

5. Build-in Rest. Take time off for recovery. Muscles grow bigger and stronger not during actual training, but when you allow them adequate time for rest. Serious athletes and bodybuilders often train only four to five times per week. Your body needs rest periods and proper nutrition to recover from the hard work of training. On days off, go easier, walk, swim, eat healthy, and just maybe, take naps!

4. Hit the Free Weights. There are certain free-weight exercises that are a must. Weight machines are fantastic for isolation and
