It's time to Mess with Roy Cohn
Learn this name: Marja-Lewis Ryan Maybe you've got your ear very close to the ground of LGBTQ creative endeavors. Maybe you're one of her brunch pals. Otherwise it wouldn't be out of the question if you didn't know Marja-Lewis Ryan. But this is the era of creators like Lena Waithe and Bryan Fuller becoming fanned over names due to the quality of their output, and Ryan has a lot of irons in the fire right now. Her queer drama, The Four-Faced Liar, won the Outstanding First Narrative Feature award from Los Angeles' LGBTQ film festival Outfest. She also wrote and directed 6 Balloons, starring Abbi Jacobson and Dave Franco, streaming now on Netflix. She's been tapped as showrunner for the Showtime reboot of The L

who, according to the official log line, “hook up, mess up, and grow up. Co-produced by Transparent's Jill Soloway and Channing Tatum, it should keep Ryan busy for those remaining hours of the day when she might otherwise sleep or eat. Go catch up on this talented woman's body of work because right now it looks like it's not going to slow down for dawdlers.
Was there ever a more damaged and destructive gay villain in modern political history than the late Roy Cohn? In the 1950s he got his feet wet as an assistant to antiCommunist life-wrecker Senator Joseph McCarthy and his House Un-American Activities Committee. Then in the '80s he was Donald Trump's lawyer, a fairly consistently evil power broker, and a vicious public homophobe even though he was himself a closeted gay man with AIDS. Now Matt Tyrnauer, the documentary filmmaker responsible for Valentino: The Last Emperor, this summer's theatrically released doc Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood, as well as A&E's forthcoming Studio 54, is hard at work on
COHN Don't Mess With Roy Cohn. The film will cover what amounts to the lasting effects of Cohn, how his political tactics and deeply polarizing actions set the stage for the ascendance of maniacal conservatives like the current U.S. President, whom he mentored decades ago. So it won't be exactly an uplifting story, but one we need to remember and guard against allowing to happen again.
Romeo San Vicente hasn't given up hope.

Craft Yourself as a Winner!
Making It Premiered on NBC By: Scott Holland y now you may have seen the premiere episode of Making It, which premiered last Tuesday and features BFF executive producers/hosts Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman. Making It is a uniquely lighthearted competition series celebrating the creativity and craftiness in all of us. In this six-episode competition, Jeffery Rudell, an openly gay man, is one of the eight super talented makers that will compete with the hopes of impressing Poehler, Offerman and the expert judges, Simon Doonan and Dayna Isom Johnson through various crafting challenges. Because Jeffery's father worked in a paper mill when he was growing up, his background of working with cardboard, foil and tissue molded him into the creative paper props craftsman he is today. He creates for clients such as Tiffany & Company, Unilever, New York Botanical Gardens, and a wide range of print and online

At what age did crafting become an interest? I come from a crafting background, as I grew up in a farm in Michigan. My mom made quilts and my dad was a woodworker. From very early on, I was encouraged to make my own things. When I was 8, the irst thing I made was a fake typewriter. I still have it, it sits on a shelf in my studio.
When did crafting become your full time profession? In 1989, I left my Job in the American Academy in Rome as I got an opportunity to do window displays at Tiffany's. I was lucky enough to meet the guy who hires for that and he loved

davinci invenciones Exposición en Frost Museum of Science |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Adora: Wow! So cool to see the exhibit at Miami's Frost Science Museum of Leonardo Da Vinci's mechanical sketches and the maquette made by contemporary Florentine Crafts-people from his drawings. The sketches are so beautiful, and even his writing next to the drawings is so refined, even though he wrote it backwards so people

couldn't steal his ideas. It's incredible, I can't even write 'ADORA” backwards without thinking about each letter, but he wrote whole pages of complicated scientific ideas backwards. And when you place him in the context of all the exhibits about Nature, the aquarium and the planetarium at the Frost Science Museum, he makes sense as a scientist who spent his life trying to understand everything in Nature. Teddy Behr: I think he was one of the most amazing people ever: besides the scientific things like flying machines and underwater diving suits, which he was working on 400 years before they actually got 'invented,' there are his breathtaking paintings. Including 'The Last Supper' which is discussed and explained in the exhibit.
Adora: I loved the costumes in the show he designed for parties given by his main patron, the Duke of Milan. One of his jobs at the Ducal Court was to organize the parties, weddings, etc. This makes me think of the White Party at Vizcaya back in the '90's…those Masked Balls they'd give in DaVinci's time were set up so people could flirt and dally, and tryst all over those vast formal gardens, and the next day everyone could say: “I wonder who that was with.——”…even though they mostly knew exactly who was with whom. Teddy Behr: I guess it's an old story: when you want to have a really good party, bring in the LGBTQ's. It's not mentioned much but Leonardo took in a young assistant who wound up staying with him for 28 years. He was called 'Salai'
which means 'Little Devil'. I guess he was kind of a bad boy. Records of DaVinci's notes show he was kept on even though he stole from the Master and got into all sorts of trouble several times. There are experts who believe that Salai was the model for his Saint John Baptist and the Mona Lisa, for which he would have posed in drag. I guess we'll never know who Salai was to Leonardo, but Leonardo left him most of his estate when he died. Adora: They have Court records that show that Leonardo was also charged with sodomy, which was really serious back then, but the charge was dropped. Some people think it's the reason why Leonardo left Florence for Milan: He needed a Patron and got a better offer from Milan

genre latino / Culturizate instead of Florence. It wasn't ok to be Gay or Lesbian and sodomy carried a death penalty in Florence back then, but it had to be proven, which could be difficult. A lot of people at the top, like the de Medici's and Church Dignitaries knew that many of the best artists and designers were Gay and didn't t care. This was very similar to Hollywood in the 20's and 30's. Of course the general public wasn't supposed to know‌or they might start coming out Gay or Lesbian too. Teddy Behr: A lot of Leonardo's figures: Saint John Baptist, the Mona Lisa, and others were really androgynous and really beautiful in ways that transcended 'male' or 'female.'His paintings have an incredibly fine softness. All the descriptions of him say he was a very beautiful man, but what's amazing is the way this artist was also an incredible scientist, full of curiosity about how things
worked and how mechanical devices based on the workings of nature could be invented. We tend to think people are either 'artistic' or 'mathematical,' but Leonardo was both, and big time both. Adora: Mmmmm‌.he was able to imagine things like flying machines, helicopters, underwater diving suits, and other more basic machines like some of the ones in this exhibit. But to actually design and fabricate some of them, it's an amazing combination of talents. He was curious about everything and even arranged to receive cadavers to dissect so he could
understand how the human body works. This was totally illegal back then. Teddy Behr: We mostly think of Leonardo as an artist: the Last Supper, and the Mona Lisa, probably the most iconic, most copied paintings ever, but it's great to see his work presented in the new Frost Science Museum, as a scientist. During the Renaissance, they didn't separate things so much; so an artist, an inventor, an astronomer, a scientist, they were all considered remarkable for their imaginations and the creations their imaginations led to.

STAR PARKER W
e may be well into the summer, but the anti-gay panic that comes to a boil in June as a result of gays having done stole the whole month to celebrate our heathen desires is still simmering. Case in point: Star Parker's recent column titled, “Do Christians Have a Future in LGBTQ America?” “Gay Pride Month has become a time for LGBTQ storm troopers to pursue political enemies,” Parker writes. “Not much different from the infamous Kristallnacht in Nazi Germany, when Nazi brown shirts took to the streets to smash windows of shops owned by Jews.” Not much different, huh? I'm thinking back to the Pride event I attended last month. I didn't see any window smashing or violent oppression by LGBTQ people against Jews or anybody else. I did see lots of same-sex couples holding hands, people of indeterminate gender going about their business of being human, a drag queen with makeup melting in the heat, and a lot of cute dogs in rainbow bandanas. I personally spent a lot of my time looking for one of those “Hate Has No Home Here” yard signs, which I inally located at a local PFLAG chapter's booth. But to Parker we were all engaged in an act of oppression against her because she, as a Christian, doesn't want to acknowledge us as humans and thus inds our mere existence in public, celebrating no less, to basically be an
OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI
anti-Christian hate crime. Never mind the fact that LGBTQ Christians exist. Since Parker would like nothing less than the elimination of LGBTQ people (through so-called “conversion therapy” or at least the disappearance from public life), this is a difference on which there can be no compromise. There is no middle ground to give when what's in question is my very right to be treated as a human being deserving of equality. It's also interesting to note Parker's comparison of LGBTQ people to Nazis at a time when we have a president who claims that white supremacists are “very ine people” and a racist attorney general. The Trump administration has been the most openly hostile to LGBTQ people in forever. So Parker can miss me with the Nazi comparisons. Something Parker is really struggling with is the LGBTQ acronym itself, speci ically the “B.” As most people know, the “B” stands for “bisexual.” But, according to Parker, it really stands for “bestiality." “They keep pushing out this idea, LGBTQ,” she says in a radio interview with right-wing host Jerry Newcombe. “We did the 'L' and the 'G,' they legalized marriage for themselves. We're doing the 'T' now, the trans, and this is a big, big challenge in our society right now. They did the 'Q' where they're changing all the textbooks, even as low as kindergarten,
Hotspots.LGBT | 73
to re lect that you don't know what you are, you're questioning. But notice they skipped over the 'B,' and there are some that say this 'B' is going to bombard us with real vileness in our society if they get what they want because it's not about bisexuality, it's about bestiality.” Newcombe asks her to explain. “We do know that there is an agenda and we do know that there have been discussions about bestiality in their closed doors,” she says. “I'm just saying don't be surprised if we ind out that that 'B' is not what they said publicly—that we just love each other—that it may, in law, show up as something else.” Apparently Parker thinks that LGBTQ is a “To Do” list, not an acronym. And she has a pretty warped view of strides toward equality (i.e. “They legalized marriage for themselves”). It is very interesting that she claims we “skipped over the 'B,” since that is a legit complaint by many bisexual people who feel invisible.
But that's not what she's addressing, of course. She is equating LGBTQ people with the most depraved acts she can think of. To her we aren't humans, we're dog f*ckers. Remember, that's the only way the right's “religious freedom” bullshit can be justi ied. If LGBTQ people are just so degraded and vile that no decent person would want to be associated with them. That even Jesus Himself would be like, “Eww. No.” So when Parker complains that the rainbow lag makes her feel unwelcome, let's be clear that LGBTQ people do not owe people who won't acknowledge our humanity any open arms.
As most people know, the “B” stands for “bisexual.” But, according to Parker, it really stands for “bestiality."

4 THINGS
You Never Want to Hear From
Your Personal Trainer
H
aving a personal trainer can really help you achieve your health and fitness goals. A great trainer teaches you proper form, holds you accountable and gives you that extra push you need to get results. Yet, not all trainers are alike, and if yours offers you any of the following “gems of wisdom” it may be time to serve him his walking papers.
1. “All of my clients get results from this program and so will you!” Because no two human bodies are alike, there's no way of guessing exactly how one person's body is going to respond to a workout and nutrition program. To achieve optimal
results, an effective fitness regime must be tailormade to each individual client's needs. You have no time for cookie cutter routines or someone
Hotspots.LGBT | 77
who treats you like every other client. Your trainer should request your doctor's clearance before beginning a program. He should take measurements regularly to chart your progress. A diligent trainer will listen to you on an ongoing basis and keep you safe as you achieve solid results gradually over time.
2. “Spot training is the way to train those problem areas.” You can't dictate how your body loses fat or builds muscle. Everyone has certain problem areas- those pesky love handles, too much junk in the trunk- that need to be addressed with training. Likewise, every guy wants bigger arms, smaller waist, stronger legs, etc. Strength training combined with effective cardio training and a solid nutrition program is the surest way to reduce fat not just in one area, but across your entire body. A variety of weight training exercises that target muscles individually and in combination with other muscle groups is the best way to maintain and build muscle in all areas.
3. “The Bosu ball is the best way to train core.” At some point Bosu balls 78 | Hotspots.LGBT
became all the rage. Doing everything on the ball from dumbbell curls to barbell squats was considered the best way to improve core strength. Unfortunately, this practice can be dangerous and seriously harm lots of people, especially neophytes, by throwing off their balance and coordination. The Bosu ball is one tool. Try doing core exercises using an exercise ball and some lighter weights for better and safer results.
4. “Cut out all carbohydrates and grab more protein!” Protein is essential after workouts since it's the nutrient your muscles need most for recovery and growth. But the body also requires carbohydrates to assimilate protein. Carbs fuel your body for all activities from the moment you get out of bed until the time you finish the dishes at night! Try lower glycemic index carbs (whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables) early in the day for a steady supply of energy all day long. High glycemic index carbs like bananas, citrus, or a fruit smoothie after your workout will replenish glycogen stores and restore lost nutrients and energy expended during workouts.
