deep inside HOLLYWOOD By Romeo San Vicente there's an impressive cast led by Phylicia Rashad and young actor Akili McDowell. Pose star Indya Moore will serve Frankenstein realness Che Grayson is a young black filmmaker from New York, whose short films have picked up numerous awards and whose self-published comic book series, Rigamo, is about a young black female superhero whose tears bring people back to life. But that's not why she's news right now. She is also the driving force behind a new, currently untitled, anthology series, the pilot for which, called Magic Hour will star Pose's Indya Moore as a Frankensteinlike creature in search of her humanity and possibly love. Now, usually, pilots are only memorable when they become actual shows. But this one feels special, mostly because Moore's star is currently on the rise. The Vogue model-turned-actress is one of the breakout stars of the series (recently renewed for a second season – watch it now,

it's great, seriously), and her acting talent has made for some of that show's most moving, resonant moments. She'll serve as a producer on Magic Hour, as well, so we hope that whatever clout she's currently earning will get this fresh idea of a series looked at and placed. We are rooting for more queer TV, and we'd be thrilled if Moore were on our screens regularly.
A supporting role will involve a gender nonbinary neighbor who helps David’s mother watch and raise him.

Gus Next Chapter By Chris Azzopardi
Olympian-activist on his Hollywood aspirations, a promising future for LGBTQ athletes and being a 'bad gay'
PHOTO: Caleb Young
obody reminds silver Olympic medalist Gus Kenworthy that he was in Sharknado 5, and it's hard to tell how that makes him feel after I casually drop that nugget of info as you do if you've studied his IMDB page. “Global Swarming,” I say, naming the ilm's subtitle. He laughs big. “Never before has anyone said that to me.” It's 9 a.m. when Kenworthy calls, and he's either in serious-guy interview mode, a lowkey (or sleepy?) version of his perky Instagram self – or he just rolled out of the air mattress he's been snoozing on since recently moving to Los Angeles. If you're an aspiring actor like Kenworthy, this is where you aspire. This is where Kenworthy will spend time writing his latest and greatest chapter, maybe host a game show or a talk show. (Whatever he does, let there be dogs, because Kenworthy loves dogs.) And he's in the right place with the right man, his actor-boyfriend of three years, Matthew Wilkas. So, why not? Before pursuing acting, Kenworthy gained global notoriety after taking silver in men's slopestyle at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. But after the 26-year-old British-born freestyle skier came out as gay the following year in an interview with ESPN, he was recognized as an LGBTQ trailblazer for being one of only a few athletes to do so. This year, Wilkas and Kenworthy expressed their unabashed affection for each other during the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, when their televised kiss before his qualifying run in the men's slopestyle became, like his triumphant sports career itself, a notable moment of visibility for LGBTQ athletes.
I spotted you in Detroit recently during a Stars on Ice performance, when you shot your interview with fellow Olympian and your good friend Adam Rippon, for Nightline. At the end of the show, fans swarmed you. Are you used to being recognized in public? Yes and no. It stills seems strange, but I've gotten used to it. I got a little bit of recognition prior to the Olympics four years ago from skiing. And then when I came out, I feel like my platform de initely changed and grew, and it took a different shape in terms of the people who would approach me. It's sort of been a slow grow, not completely overnight. It must be much more insane for Adam, because heading into this Games, he hadn't been to another Games and his platform wasn't super huge and now it's insane. He had more growth than any other Olympian at the Games. That's very much night and day. How do the conversations you have with fans change depending on if you're at, say, a ski shop versus a gay bar? At a ski shop it's often like, “Oh, what's up man? Where do you ski?” It's pretty surface. Who comes up to me most are other
Hotspots.LGBT | 39
gay guys and usually they're really, really sweet and they say something really nice. And they'll want a photo; it's kind of a short exchange. Sometimes it's more earnest, but often it's not. And it de initely does happen a lot at gay bars.
What's a not-earnest exchange like? I think one type of interaction is like (models a fangirling vocal affect), “Oh my god! I love your Instagram! Can I take a photo?” And then like, “I saw you in the Olympics; can I have a photo?” Or another one: “Hey, just wanted to say thank you so much for coming out and for using your platform.” It's just really, really, really sweet. It means a lot to me.
Adam told me he most identi ies with Dorothy and Blanche. Which Golden Girl are you? I mean, I'm Betty White.
closet at the time. I wasn't sharing him with my world, and vice versa, and I think that took a toll. So, I wasn't in the best place. Now, at this moment in my life, another Olympics just ended, I didn't get a medal at this Games, but I still feel like I had a good season at the qualifying events in order to Where are you at now with your sexuality get to the Olympics. I still got to be at the compared to when you irst came out? Olympics and compete out loud and proud, I'm in a way better place in my life. Right after, I won the silver medal I was not out. I was in a low and cheer on Adam and my other friends, and got to be who I am and represent myself point in my life too because it was sort of a time and my country and my community and the where I wanted to be out; I didn't think it was a reality. Suddenly, I did have this elevated platform things I believe in. It was an awesome experience. I don't know what the next from the Olympics and the dogs (Kenworthy rescued a mother dog and her four puppies at the chapter of my life is, but I'm in LA right now Winter Olympics in Sochi), and it sort of made me and I'm planning on spending more time feel uncomfortable because I wasn't being my true here and auditioning and trying to get into some acting and do TV hosting. self. I just felt fake and had a boyfriend in the

You're a Rose? I don't know. To be completely honest, I don't watch Golden Girls, so I'm a bad gay. Honestly, it's not a choice, it's just, I never did. But I have an ongoing list of things that my boyfriend is like, “You're a bad gay, you haven't seen this.”
What are your acting aspirations? I would love to be on Broadway. I would like to work on my voice, and maybe get it to a place where I feel con ident with my singing so that I can do more theatricaltype stuff. It would be a dream to be on TV and in movies. Growing up, I did theater. My dream was to be an actor, not a skier.
Acting doesn't always promise overnight success. Does that scare you? No. I feel like I've had success in my sport and this is something I'm really into and passionate about and would love to pursue. I wanted it as a kid and then something else presented itself and I spent my life skiing, and I'm not done with it either completely, but this is a new thing. It'd be great and fun, and if it doesn't (work out), it's not the end of the world.
Will you compete in the next Olympics? Maybe. I haven't decided.
You've been a brand ambassador for H&M, for their recent Pride collection, and Head & Shoulders, for their “Shoulders of Greatness” campaign. Actually, (the Header & Shoulders campaign) was a really cool experience because it was the very irst time that there was ever a Pride lag in a TV commercial in a national commercial. So, it was cool and I was like, “Oh my god, that's never happened.”
As an out gay man, what it's like to partner with these LGBTQ-inclusive brands? It's amazing. It's important brands align themselves with the LGBTQ community. LGBTQ people should be represented in every part of life, and so that's also in the arts and in commercials and on billboards. Things
shouldn't just be catered to straight people and white people and men. So, it's cool to do a campaign that highlights that and highlights me as a gay man.
You were recently the Pride grand marshal in Montreal and Miami Beach. What was your Pride message to the LGBTQ community? I think that Pride is so important. It's a moment for us as a community to celebrate who we are but also to look back on where we've come from. It's important to remember the people who put their lives and their careers and their necks on the line to try and really, really ight for equality. And then also just to re lect on each of our own journeys, because every single LGBTQ person has struggled at some point in their life coming to terms with themselves and identifying themselves and embracing it and living their truth. It's a hard thing to do. It's a scary thing to do. But once you start doing it, there's no other way to live.
What was your irst Pride like? A whole new world. I was with my very irst boyfriend years and years and years ago and we happened to be in San Francisco because we were driving up to Vancouver from where he's from, Colorado, and we woke up in San Francisco and it was Pride. We walked outside and there were naked people and painted people and Pride lags and people all getting ready for San Francisco Pride, and I was like, “What the fuck?” I didn't even know what it was. I was totally in the closet with him, and I remember being nervous to watch it but so excited. That was kind of my irst Pride. But I de initely wasn't embracing myself and proud of myself and enjoying Pride in the sense that it should be. New York Pride was the irst time

I was out and excited and wearing rainbow shit and cheering and screaming and dancing.
You recently attended Life Ball, the biggest charity event in Europe supporting people with HIV or AIDS. I heard people lose their shirts in light en route to Vienna. This is a thing? Yeah. Basically, there are no rules at all. Like, Kelly Osbourne did our in- light announcement and as soon as the light took off everyone was out of their seats, everyone was switching seats, walking around, people were drinking in the aisles of the light straight out of the bottle.
Who wasn't wearing a shirt? Or who was? I think most people. I de initely didn't know everyone on the light. It was packed with people. But there was a whole congregation of people at the back of the plane, in the back galley. And they were lipping the lights on and off and playing music and people were drinking. And some shirts came off. And people were making out. And I think some people might have maybe gone into the bathroom together. It was really wild. And what were you doing the whole time? I was part of the process! I was in the back with people! And I don't know, just chatting with people, meeting people, drinking, hanging out. Witnessing all that was going on around me.
Is it weird that this is your life now? I mean, yeah, I guess. This was de initely different than anything I've ever been to. I was like, this is crazy. De initely pretty surreal.
Which famous person that you've met has left the biggest impression on you? In just short meetings like that I'm often starstruck and just excited to say “hey.” But I met Miley Cyrus after the last Olympics and we've become friends, sort of. We don't hang out all the time, but she's de initely had a big impact on me. I just think she's amazing. I think she does a lot for the LGBTQ community, a lot for animals and she's just a really nice, good, kind person You work with her charity, the Happy Hippie Foundation, which serves homeless 42

youth and the LGBTQ community. Yeah, I do. And I think that's another way that she's inspired me. I feel like I've tried to do a lot for charity because I just believe in it.
Tell me about your part in the new documentary Alone in the Game, about the lack of out LGBTQ athletes. And what do you think the future holds for LGBTQ athletes? I talk about the importance of representation in sports. I think sports are kind of a scary place for LGBTQ people, but sports are meant to be about inclusion in their own right and putting aside differences to come together and play on a team. I think it's important to have representation, and the reason we haven't had more gay people in sports isn't because we haven't had more gay people in sports, it's because we haven't had more gay people in sports that have been willing to put their life on the line and be open and honest about who they are. But there are gonna be more of us in the future. Whether it's just because more and more people are gonna come out who are currently competing, or it's the next generation. I feel like there are so many kids who are out in high school, and it's crazy because I'm not that much older than that and I don't feel like that was an option for me. So, that's great to see, and I think that will change things. But the only way to change misperception is just through visibility. The more that we can show that we're here and we're queer and we're just as capable as anyone else, it will be better for everyone and more people will feel safe to come out. DJ ALEX FERBEYRE e all remember DJ Alex Ferbeyre (Then known as Maximus 3000) from his days DJing the white room at Living Room Fridays. Every time I would go into his room, it would always be packed and he would always have a smile on his face; the energy was great. Alex has played almost every major space in South Florida, owns a few record labels, and continues to grow in the Music Industry. It was great to sit down with my buddy Alex for this exclusive Hotspots interview. When did you realize you wanted to be a DJ? In my late teens, I was in college attending the Art Institute for visual arts and began playing music during my gallery exhibits as an experiment. Shortly afterwards, I started fusing live performances of playing music

during the exhibits as a regular thing. This sparked my interest to pursue it full time. After Arts College, I entered into Music Business and Music theory, and finally Broadcast journalism which really made me go for it as a profession. I have always loved music and had been ingesting music for decades, so it was a natural

progression. I also love making people happy and dance!
Where are you from? What brought you to South Florida? I am a native of Miami - 3rd generation Cuban American, and grew up here in the 80s. Very proud to have experienced all the music movements spawned in the "Magic City." What was your first residency, and how did that feel? My first residency was "Electro-AGo-Go!" on south beach (my old stomping ground) a hybrid goth/electro/hips ter/80s night (which was my first passion and lineage). I couldn't wait week after week to create our events. I was also the co-promoter, so a lot of components were explored from booking guest the response and crowds I was playing to. DJs and booking bands to being an official hub for This residency really opened the doors to US promotions for record labels like EMI, festivals and pride events. I am so grateful Astralwerks etc. We held official parties for for the 4 years I played there. Erasure, Kylie Minogue, Duran Duran, and What separates you from other DJs? Goldfrapp just to name a few. My first major I'd like to think that because of my mixed residency was Living Room in Fort Lauderdale. background (coming from being a mobile That was truly life changing, and I had to up my DJ, to eventually fusing 80's/Goth and game (as I had sort of branded myself as an Retro with House and open electro house DJ up until then). I was humbled at format/Mashup style as I did at Living Photos by Dean Murphy, David Vance, and Noel Dahl Studios

Room) that I have less boundaries and more wings to spread my chops. I truly feel I can play to virtually any crowd both underground, and mainstream. In the LGBT/circuit industry, it's rare for DJs to cross over and play "straight" events or corporate or family events. Some of the events I played are: City of Miami Beach (fire on the fourth, Sleepless night); inc500 Conference, and played posh places like the W. I also still maintain a vibration centered in nightclubs and circuit events like GayDays, White party, winter party etc. I am so excited to be able to play to so many different crowds, all in the vein of good music. What are some memorable moments from the DJ booth? I have to say the truly mind-blowing ones are the times I get to meet some of my idols in Music. Opening up for La India at Miami Beach Pride's inaugural year was one of those moments. Every time I get to rub shoulders with Major Artitsts and Musicians, like Andy Bell during Stonewall (considering that just less than a few years before that I was doing a promotion in a small bar in SoBe for Erasure), or Jennifer Holiday etc., I have to sit back and take stock at just how much work I've put into my career and how far I've come. Every time I reach a new stratosphere I have to pinch myself to make sure i'm not dreaming! Other than DJing, what do you like to do for fun? I have really warmed up to physical fitness and sports, it's become a centering for me and a break from all the hustle and flow of running my record label, producing and doing brand/design for my company 8025 Promo. I love running it's become my meditation. I am also a severe thalassophile (someone who enjoys the ocean) and enjoy
sunrises at the beach, it's truly one of my favorite things to do! It helps to slow and smell the flowers, so to speak. I am also a huge geek - I read comic books and i'm obsessed with marvel and the marvel cinematic universe. Describe yourself in 3 words? Loyal, loving and dedicated What does the future hold for you? I'm sort of in a renaissance and i'm creating some new radio shows and podcast series which is currently available on itunes, mixcloud , google play + more (Alex Ferbeyre Presents PLAY). I'm also working on some original music and music videos and an anthology/mix of my remix and production career. I'm currently booking and licensing my brand subWOOFer to other cities and
seeking to work with more promoters outside of the US. It's all happening and I couldn't be happier! Top 10 this week: it's hard to narrow down to top 10, but I can say there a few flavors and producers that are really resonating with me right now - CamelPhat , MK , Hotsince '82, Me and My ToothBrush, and EDX just to name a few. Locally I'm really proud of some of the work my peers are doing, Guy DeCianto, Barry Huffine, Shemuel, and Charlie Droze. These local artists are really evolving and i'm super excited to see what else they have in store.

BILL SCHUETTE
A
couple of columns ago I wrote about sitting in a chemo ward getting poison pumped into my body, worried that my insurance was about to run out. My wife's insurance was not available to me since our marriage wasn't recognized in Michigan. And while there were many people who contributed to this injustice, I hold one person in particular especially at fault. Michigan's Attorney General Bill Schuette (rhymes with "booty"). You see, he fought against marriage equality at every turn. All the way to the Supreme Court, in fact. Where he lost. And I won what should have been mine all along. Now Schuette is spending his last year as AG running for Governor. But he's still inding time to continue his attack on LGBTQ people in Michigan. You see, in May the Michigan Civil Rights Commission decided that the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, Michigan's civil rights law, protects LGBTQ people from discrimination. This was a huge win for equality in Michigan as adding sexual orientation and gender identity to ElliottLarsen has been a goal for decades. Because up until May 22, LGBTQ people had no legal recourse when it came to discrimination in Michigan. That means it was perfectly legal to ire someone for being gay, or refuse to rent to someone who is trans, for example. So of course this made Schuette very unhappy. And so, at the request of Republicans in the legislature, on July 20, Schuette issued a formal option stating that Elliott-Larsen does
OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI
not, in fact, protect LGBTQ people and that the MCRC overstepped its authority. “Michigan's Constitution entrusts the Legislature, and not executive agencies or commissions, with the authority to change, extend, or narrow statutes," Schuette wrote in his opinion. In a perfect world, we would have a legislature in Michigan that would, in fact, act to broaden protections. But we do not have that here. Instead, we have a heavily gerrymandered state heavily in favor of Republican, which means the most extreme Republicans are often the ones who win elections. The people of Michigan do not have a representative democracy. We have a rigged system. Which means the legislature has refused to act over and over again because it is packed with people who don't think LGBTQ people are fully human. Now, you could say that Schuette only issued this ruling to throw meat to his base right before the Aug. 7 primary election, where he is the frontrunner for Governor. But one could also say that telling LGBTQ people they aren't fully human is very on-brand for Schuette because he is awful. Also both things are true. The scary thing is, Schuette isn't even the most extreme candidate vying for governor on the Republican ticket. That's how crazily right-wing the GOP is in Michigan. But make no mistake, just because there's someone worse, that doesn't make Schuette better. It's

like being oered the choice of either having an arm or a leg broken. Choosing between bad options is no choice at all. But here's the good news, the Michigan Civil Rights Commission received Schuette's opinion, read it, and told him to pound sand. They will keep investigating discrimination complaints based on sexual orientation and gender identity, thank you very much. "The Michigan Civil Rights Commission is an independent, constitutionally created and established body," MCRC Director Agustin V. Arbulu said in a statement. "The Commission is not bound by the opinion of the Attorney General. The only recourse is for the courts to determine if issuing the interpretive statement was within the scope of the commission's authority, and that is the appropriate venue for resolving this issue." In other words, the MCRC told Schuette, “You're not the boss of us,â€? while at the same
time acknowledging that this issue will wind up in court and welcoming that challenge. Meanwhile, conservatives are calling for all the members of the MCRC to be removed by Gov. Rick Snyder, a man who poisoned an entire city and yet somehow still has his job. The most obvious solution to the problem of anti-LGBTQ leadership in Michigan is to get rid of it. Dana Nessel was the attorney behind the case challenging Michigan's ban on adoption and marriage by same sex couples. That case went all the way to the Supreme Court where equality won. Check her out at dana2018.com.
The people of Michigan do not have a representative democracy. We have a rigged system.

GREATER GAINS!
Achieve Higher Gains with These Cable Exercises!
W
hen it comes to strength training and bodybuilding most hardcore guys will agree that there is nothing better than free weights, i.e., barbells, dumbbells, etc. Cable exercises are great for adding variety to your free weight routine. Combining cable exercises into your workouts will help to exhaust the muscle groups you are targeting that day. Try implementing a few of these exercises and I promise you'll be jacked over the results! Bent-over cable raises work the entire shoulder-deltoids area and allow you to target the rear head of the deltoids. Stand adjacent to a low cable, bend over and grasp
the handle palm up across your body with the right hand. With the left hand on the left knee for support, raise the right arm up and out to the side until almost parallel to the floor. Pause, then lower to starting position without letting the weights touch between repetitions. I like to

combine these with standing dumbbell lateral raises and standing alternating front dumbbell raises to really target deltoid development! Perform 10-12 reps, then turn around and grasp the handle with the left hand for another set. Complete 3 alternating sets of 8-12 reps with each arm.
Kneeling cable curls will give those triceps the attention they require. Kneel adjacent to a high cable, grasping the handle palm up with the right hand. Beginning with the right elbow against the right knee, arm bent at a 90 degree angle, and the left hand on the left knee for support, proceed to pull down with the right hand until the arm is nearly straight. Pause then return to starting position and don't let the weights touch between reps. Perform 8-12 reps, then turn and grasp the handle with the left hand for another set. Complete 3 alternating sets of 8-12 reps with each arm.
One arm pec-chest cable crosses are a great compliment to chest double cable crossovers. They're perfect for isolating each set of pecs – right and left sides – alternately. Stand adjacent to a high cable and grasp the handle palm forward in the left hand, the arm bent. Now pull down and across your chest. Pause, then return to starting position once again without letting the weights touch between reps. Perform 8-12 reps, then turn around and grasp the handle with the right hand for another set. Complete 3 alternating sets with each arm.
Pump up biceps with cable standing curls. Stand facing a low cable and grasp a short bar or you can also use a rope by grasping it on either side. Keeping arms slightly bent, proceed to curl up and squeeze until biceps meet forearms. Pause then lower to starting position without letting the weights touch between reps. Dealing with
SOCIAL MEDIA! 8 Tips For Dealing With Social Media Stress and Sadness 1. Maintain a balance between online life and real life Spending too much time on any one thing is not a good thing, especially if it's causing unnecessary stress and anxiety. You wouldn't actively throw yourself into a lion's den of radical political foes in real life, so why put yourself through that online? Certainly there's the appeal of being able to voice your opinion without much consequence – we've all been keyboard warriors at some point – but what good has it done? Has anyone changed their mind based on what you've commented? Chances are slim, and all you got from it was a headache. Thus, the first way to take back your life from the stronghold of social media is to maintain a balance, or tip the scales even. If you're spending a lot of time online, power off and seek out the positive real-life relationships you have and plan activities you enjoy doing.

When social networks first gained popularity – back in the days of AOL chat rooms – it was exciting, fun, and a generally positive experience. For LGBT people like us, it existed as an outlet where we could be ourselves without fear of discovery and ridicule from the outside world. But as time has trudged on, social media has evolved into a dark and depressing vortex of negativity – mostly attributed to our outrageous political climate – which, if you're not careful, can suck the life right out of you. It's hard to quit social media altogether – I've tried myself and failed – but if you're experiencing a sense of sadness and despair as a result of your time spent on Facebook, Twitter and other platforms, it may be time to reevaluate your priorities and implement ways you can make the experience and your overall life better. Here are eight ways how.
2. Quit a platform or two If the idea of quitting social media completely causes anxiety, there's a compromise: Get rid of one or two platforms that you can live without. For me, it's hard to quit Facebook because I use it for business and I like the convenience of having it attached to other app-based accounts that allow me to log in effortlessly using Facebook (really one of the more brilliant moves that Facebook made to keep us from straying), but I can live without Twitter because I don't see the point of it anyway. I look forward to the day that I don't have a business that requires social-media (which may never come, sure), so I can deactivate Facebook, never to be heard from on that platform again. A boy can dream, at least.

Has anyone changed their mind based on what you've commented? Chances are slim, and all you got from it was a headache.
3. Stop the comparisons to the social media 'highlight reel’ One of the major contributors to social media sadness, which is a legitimate disorder, is comparing your life to the 'highlight reel' of others you follow. You may be part of that façade yourself; I know I am. We purposely push the great content out there – the beautiful restaurants we eat in, the luxurious places we go, the expensive clothing we wear – because we want to elicit the envy of our friends, family, and perfect strangers, whether we'll admit it or not. And then we look at other people's feeds and judge our own success, happiness, wellbeing, and wealth by those fantasies. Not healthy, says Dr. Judi Cinéas, a psychotherapist practicing in New York and Florida. “People follow a lot of things online that create an illusion of reality that they try to emulate,” she explains. “When their lives fail to follow that path it can cause some dissatisfaction. Instead, follow things that are more in line with your life and the goals that you are working towards. Seek out things that inspire and motivate you to pursue your own goals. Social media houses enough content to build you up and tear you down in the same split second. It's up to you to determine what you allow.”

4. Limit your social media use and remove the temptations Cut back on the time you spend endlessly scrolling Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by practicing discipline. Allot yourself a certain amount of time per day and stick to it – an hour and a half, for example. Break it down throughout the day by checking in when you wake up, on your lunch break, and while you're unwinding on the couch after dinner. Stay off it completely when you're in the company of real people, too. Sticking your face in your phone during actual human interaction defeats the purpose of that interaction. You might as well have stayed home. Another tactic I use is to delete apps I'm spending too much time on from my phone for periods of time. While I have a hard time shunning Facebook altogether, I do sometimes take a hiatus when I feel like it's challenging my productivity and replacing it with procrastination. You have to recognize that problem first, though, which is half the battle.
4
“Looking at social media and wallowing in self-pity is not constructive”.
5. Think about what triggers you – and how to improve upon it
5
When your anxiety and stress level starts climbing because of a social media post, take a minute to ask yourself why. What about it has triggered these feelings? Are you browsing pictures of a happy couple while you're experiencing loneliness? Are you reading about someone's wild weekend as you struggle with your own sobriety? All you're doing is punishing yourself here, but for what? Bianca L. Rodriguez, a psychotherapist in Santa Monica, Cali., offers advice on how to make lemonade out of your rotten lemons. “Looking at social media and wallowing in selfpity is not constructive,” she says. “I recommend you investigate what feelings are surfacing, allow yourself to experience them and then devise a solution that supports your wellbeing. It's always helpful to speak with a trusted friend, therapist or your partner to gain some perspective and support.” 90 | Hotspots.LGBT
6. Make compromises and stick to what makes you happy What we consume changes our mentality, and if, for instance, you're obsessing over how many likes your latest selfie is getting, you're setting yourself up for disappointment that will only lead to sadness. Social media consultant Austin Iuliano recognized that habit in himself and made a few changes on how he interacts with social media in order to limit the selfinflicted pain. “I took a single social media platform and changed what I consumed on it to reflect things that make me happy,” he says. “In this case, I took Reddit and only follow accounts that post pictures of puppies. Yes, it is really that simple. By consuming pictures of puppies and the silly things they do, it reminds me life isn't so serious.”
6
7. Use the Unfollow button Out of all the tips on this list, this one is my personal favorite: Unfollow those who create a negative experience for you on social media. I've been doing this a lot lately, and it's quite cathartic. Recently I've unfollowed, unfriended, or outright blocked people for homophobia, religious zealotry, videos of animal abuse, and one nasty bitch eating raw hamburger. I don't want that shit in my feed, so I cut them out. The less negativity you see, the better your time online will be.
7
“Social media houses enough content to build you up and tear you down in the same split second. It's up to you to determine what you allow.”
8. Consult your doctor If you can't seem to shake your addiction to social media and the stress and sadness that it causes you, it may be time to consult your doctor. As I mentioned earlier, depression spurred by social media is a real disorder, and you may need qualified help to deal with it. Discuss the issue with your primary care physician and ask for their advice. Maybe there are meetings you can attend or a therapist you can see to work through the issue. There's no shame in admitting you need help – because, honey, we all do.

Big News from Two of Miami s Important Organizations!
There’s a Name Change and Vizcaya is back! Coming off the most successful event in its 10year history, the Miami Beach Gay Pride Board of Directors has unveiled a new branding initiative for the wildly popular event, including a new name and fresh, contemporary graphics that still recall the decade-old spirit of Pride. “The new name, 'Miami Beach Pride,' re lects the changing landscape of the LGBTQ+ and allied communities and better mirrors the inclusiveness of the celebration,” said Bruce Horwich, chair of the Miami Beach Pride board of directors. "The march for equality has changed signi icantly over the past decade," Horwich said. "Equality was never a solely 'gay' issue - although many men and women self-identi ied as gay in the beginnings of the equal rights movement.
