deep inside HOLLYWOOD By Romeo San Vicente
A salute to Utah's Quiet Heroes If you lived through the 1980s, you probably remember it as a time of fear and struggle for the LGBT community. Ronald Reagan was the President, and his administration ignored the AIDS crisis as most of an entire generation of gay men lost their lives. To live in the country's biggest cities with HIV/AIDS was bad enough, but at least in those places there was a queer community and medical help. Meanwhile, in the rest of the country, the fear of AIDS and the failure of many members of the medical field to even work with AIDS patients meant that people like Salt Lake City's Dr. Kristen Ries became experts in the field of care. Ries and assistant Maggie Snyder made house calls, provided education, and helped patients in the extremely conservative and religious area when others shunned them. Earlier this year, at the Sundance Film

Festival, a documentary about Ries, Quiet Heroes, from directors Jenny Mackenzie and Jared Ruga, debuted to standing ovations. Now that film about one woman's fight against ignorance, bigotry and time will debut Aug. 23 on Logo. If you weren't there, you owe it to your sense of history to watch it.
it's very exciting to see it unfold on our screens. Next in line? Supergirl, the little superhero show that keeps on kicking. We already reported that the series planned to add a transgender character, and now that incoming additional superhero, Nia Nal/Dream Girl, has an actress to play the role. Nicole Maines, the focus of a groundbreaking lawsuit when she was in school (surprise, they didn't want her using the bathroom, so she sued and won) and the subject of the book Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family, has been cast in the part. She's still new on the acting scene – she's played a trans teen in one episode of Royal Pains – so we can't really tell you much
One to Watch Nicole Maines
Laverne Cox kicked open the door, Pose sashayed through it, Sense 8 made it so cool it got itself cancelled, and now Nicole Maines is going to be a superhero. Forgive that one-sentence-long, woefully incomplete primer on the current state of transgender actors and stories on TV, but it's important to remember that we are currently in a pop culture revolution of sorts and
MAINES about her, but we're going to assume she's here to stay. Next stop: find a trans man to fill that ScarJo role.
Romeo San Vicente can, from memory, and for the sake of journalism, rank all Comic-Con cosplaying Wolverines in order of animal attraction.

We all toss around the word Staycation lately, which is generally meant as a vacation spent in one's state or close by rather than travelling a far distance, and usually is a handful of days rather than a week or two. Well the ultimate Staycation for us, South Floridian's, is the one I just did onboard Bahamas Paradise Cruises. Get ready to embark on a quick, easy, fun 2-night getaway that makes you the captain of your amazing experience. Best of all, they set sail every single day of the week, so they're ready to go whenever you are. They have 2 ships the Grand Celebration, which they have been sailing with since 2015, and their newer ship, and the one I went on, the Grand Classica. Generally the prices I have seen for a window cabin is $149 a person, all in for 2 people with taxes, etc. is $433. They do have inside cabins for a little less money and of course they have suites available as well. 36

Oscar and I decided to pamper ourselves a little and bought the “Concierge Package,” which with taxes and gratuity comes to $293 (total, not per person), and includes all this (honestly, if I didn't experience it myself, I would have never believed that they would give you all of this for such a small price): · Express Check-in at Port · Express Disembarkation at Port · Priority booking assistance for Shore Excursions · Priority luggage delivery · Reserved Seating Legends Grand Theater · Special seating arrangement for two at your choice dining in our Main Dining Room. · Dinner for two in our Specialty Restaurant (one night) Special Stateroom Welcome:
Day 1 : bathrobes, slippers, champagne bottle, fruit basket Day 2 : chocolate covered strawberries · Free Internet (two devices per stateroom) · Tour of the Bridge with Ship Officers · Cocktail Party (open bar for 30 minutes - Day 1 in the afternoon) · 50-Minute Couples Massage & Turkish Bath for two people · 2 Tickets for the Adult Comedy Show (Day 2) · Champagne Breakfast for two in our Specialty Restaurant (both mornings)
I think the best way to tell you about the cruise is just to write about everything we did. When we arrived at the port, you valet your car ($38 for the 2 days) and you walk right in. Because we bought the concierge package, there was no line, we checked in and then were escorted onto the ship where we met the concierge hostess who explained all the benefits we would receive and set up our dinning and spa times. We then headed to the room and when we arrived our bags were waiting for us, and inside the room we went. Waiting for us was a fruit basket, a bottle of champagne as well as slippers and a robes (Concierge package items). After quickly unpacking, we went to the buffet to grab a late lunch and then walked around the entire ship to familiarize ourselves with the layout. By then it was time for the Muster Drill. Following that it was already time for the Concierge 30 minute cocktail party, which included Hors D'oeuvres (they even had Caviar). Let's just say Oscar and I took advantage of the open bar and had champagne and few frozen cocktails. We then headed back to our cabin for a 30 minute cat nap and then it was time to get up, sower and change for dinner. Dinner was in The Yellow Elder, which is the main dining room and is named after the Hotspots.LGBT | 37
national flower of the Bahamas. This diverse venue features a different menu every day, melding classic American favorites with the zesty flavors of Caribbean cuisine. I had the Steakhouse Salad, followed by the Mustard Rubbed Petite Beef Tenders and ended the meal with Peach cobbler and sherbet (it's amazing how I almost never eat dessert, but on a cruise have dessert with every meal), and Oscar had the Shrimp Avocado Cocktail, the Black Pepper Crusted Ahi Tuna Nicoise Salad and Ice Cream for dessert. We both agreed that the food was well beyond what we expected and we were very happy. We then went back to the room for a 30 minute rest and to digest our delicious dinner and then it was off to the Legends Grand Theater where “South Beach Nights” was the show and features a Latin flair including pop hits through the decades. The show started with a 10 minute set by comedienne Luis Ramey, who was hysterical and then the performers came out, who are all very talented and clearly have fun with the show. There is a magician, Neil Croswell, who does 4 or 5 tricks 38

throughout the show intermingled with the performers. We were originally planning on going to sleep after the show, but it was so much fun, it woke us up and we ended the evening gambling in the casino for about an hour. The miracle was, we came out even….to me that's a win…LOL! We woke up the next morning and were excited for our “Champagne Breakfast” (Concierge package), which was absolutely delicious. Now normally, I don't drink at breakfast, but when have you ever heard me say no to champagne? We were originally planning on going off the ship and exploring the island, but we changed our minds and decided we would rather just relax by the pool. This turned out
to be an amazing decision as there were only like 20 people by the pool, so it was a very relaxing afternoon that included lunch at the buffet, frozen cocktails, and meeting some nice people from many different places in the country. Around 4pm we headed back to the room to shower, change, and get ready for our couples massage at the Indulgence Spa and Salon (do you not love the name?). I cannot tell you how relaxing it was to have this massage as the boat was pulling out of port in a massage room that has ceiling to floor windows. The view was amazing, well for about 3 minutes, until we were so relaxed we had to close our eyes! The couples massage, followed by the steam room and sauna were amazing and so relaxing. We then went back to our Cabin to shower
and dress up for our Concierge dinner at the upscale Admirals Steak and Seafood. I started out with the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake, which was so good it melted in my mouth. I followed it with the Classic Cesar Salad, and then had the New Zealand Lamb Chops, which was so delicious, and seasoned so well I was literally licking the bone (probably not the best behavior in an upscale restaurant‌LO L). I ended the meal with Pistacchio Crème Brulee, which was so yummy. Oscar had the Ahi Tuna Sashini, the Main Lobster Bisque, the Bone in Rib Eye Steak (he added a $10 Lobster tail to), and ended his meal with the cheesecake. We both agreed that this was one of the best meals we ever had on a cruise. We missed the show on the second night, as the Admirals Steak and Seafood, and takes Hotspots.LGBT | 39
between 2 to 3 hours. However, there is always next time to see it. However, after the show on the 2nd night they feature a late night adult comedy show with comedian Luis Ramey. After seeing him for 10 minutes the night before, we knew this show was a must see, and it was even better than we expected. As part of his set, Luis adlibs with the audience and when I tell you we were belly laughing so much it was almost painful. This show is $9 per person, but included in the concierge package. One of the best comedians I have seen in a long time! Our ships are packed with fun and activities for everyone. The moment you board, you'll never be bored. Dance under the stars, or really wherever the moment strikes, because everyone else will be dancing, too. Dine to your heart and stomach's desire as you pair your meals perfectly with your favorite handcrafted cocktails. Let the freedom and relaxation of the sea come to life as you enjoy
a treatment in the spa. Roll the dice in the casino and own the night. Sit back and enjoy amazing live entertainment, from Vegas-style shows to late-night comedians. And as we stop at Grand Bahama Island, the fun is just starting. Explore the island, enjoy the beaches or just shop for that perfect tropical souvenir. It's all waiting for you. There are so many other things (For Ex: bingo, games, fitness glasses, gift shops, circus workshops, trivia, dance classes, adult scavenger hunt, karaoke, disco parties, singers and so much more) ) to do on the ship that we didn't get to, but fret not, as we decided that we are definitely going back, so we can experience all the other activities (or some of them) next time.
I highly recommend you book your 2 day vacation at BahamasParadiseCruise.com.

o straight man has ever offered to make me a crop top, but Justin Theroux is no ordinary straight man. If you've seen him in all his shirtless, ripped, oiled glory in 2003's Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle or bore witness to all that was bouncing around in his grey sweatpants in HBO's The Leftovers (I know you saw that; you haven't stopped seeing that), you have likely wished him gay. The vers 46-year-old actor is, at least, the closest a straight man can get to being gay, palling around with the new Queer Eye posse and portraying a deep well of gay characters during his two-decade career, from Marshall in 2000's The Broken Hearts Club to an assortment of gay Englishmen in numerous New York theater productions. Significant gay cred aside, his acting instincts have resulted in an impressive mix of unpredictable career choices rooted in pathos and humor, David Lynchian mystery and Herculean ruggedness: from 1997's _Romy and Michele's High School Reunion_ on through Mulholland Drive, Strangers with Candy, Sex and the City, Zoolander and, most recently, The Spy Who Dumped Me. Directed by Susanna Fogel, the action-comedy caper stars Theroux as Drew, an on-the-run spy who inadvertently gets his

ex (Mila Kunis) and her best gal pal (Kate McKinnon) embroiled in his messy assassinfighting mission. Things are tamer in a hotel suite in New York City on the day Theroux sits across from me with his rescue pit bull Kuma. Theroux – imagine if he dumped you; what an honor – is not wearing sweatpants. But my mock disappointment isn't sweatpants-related; it's knowing that he made Queer Eye guy Jonathan Van Ness a crop top but didn't bring me one. And do I let Justin Theroux wreck the shirt on my back? I do, right? “I would so do it,” he politely insists. “If you have a t-shirt and a pair of scissors, I'm happy to quickly fashion you one.”
Let's talk about how you invented sweatpants. (Laughs) I invented the grey sweatpants! I brought them back, I know! You know, I was the one who made a shirt for Jonathan. We were going to gay Pride and he was like, “Fuck, I gotta go out,” and so I made him a shirt. I was like, “I wanna make one of those crop top t-shirts with the tassels,” and he ended up wearing that. Do you regularly make crop tops for your gay friends? No, that was the first one I've done. It was just
like, “It's a perfect moment in time. I'm with Jonathan and I have a t-shirt and we have scissors and I think I could pull it off.” We've become a good little clutch. Tan, Antoni and Jonathan have come over a bunch of times and we've gone back and forth, and I've disappeared into the bathroom with Jonathan and we've talked products. Can a straight guy have a queer eye? Keeping my fingers crossed. Season 3! Maybe we should do a whole thing where it's like, “Straight Eye for the Gay Guy.” Find some gay guy who's not got his shit together and I can go and help him out. I don't know if I'd be that helpful. I must say, you've got your shit together. I put a little effort in sometimes. (Queer Eye guy) Tan's trying to get me to wear some color. I'm pretty much blacks and greys. White is technically a color for me. We need to get you in floral. I don't think it's gonna happen! I just can't pull it off. I keep looking for a Hawaiian shirt that's 95 percent black with just a little pop of color in the flowers. Recently, Jonathan was obsessing over your shirtlessness in Charlie's Angels. Is that the role most gay men fangirl over when they meet you? I mean, the first one was actually The Broken Hearts Club, which was a movie I did years and years ago. I remember being at gay Pride and people being like, “Oh my god, this is the guy from Broken Hearts Club!” (Playing

“Are you comfortable kissing a guy?” “Yeah, of course.” gay) was kind of my bread and butter in New York on stage. I would do Joe Orton plays, or Shopping and Fucking. I'd do all these gay Englishmen. That was my thing that was my calling card. Why go for the gay roles? It was something that just happened. It wasn't like I was seeking them out. It was just something that presented itself. At the time, there was that kind of question when you'd go into the audition: “Are you comfortable kissing a guy?” “Yeah, of course.” In 2000, some actors were being told not to play gay characters for the sake of preserving their careers. Was there any pressure on you not to play that role? No. My agent at the time was gay, so it was never a discussion. It always boils down to, is the part good or is the play good? If the material is good, I'm happy to do it. If it's bad, then I don't wanna do it. But I wouldn't want do it for a straight part either. Did it feel like an important movie at the time for the LGBTQ community? 46
| Hotspots.LGBT
It didn't, because it's not necessarily my community. But it was one of those I was happy (about). It was the first (LGBTQ) movie that showed – at least that I had been a part of, or had seen – just a normal relationship. No one's dying of a disease, no one's fighting with their parents. It felt like a great episode of Thirtysomething or a great episode of This Is Us. (Its gay themes were) just built into the fabric of the movie, as opposed to being the fabric of the movie. There weren't big red arrows pointing at each character going, “Oh, and by the way, they're gay!” They were functioning, normal people in their lives, which is reality. In a weird way, its normalcy was the thing that made it special and that felt like a good reason to do it. Growing up in Washington D.C., what was your introduction to the LGBTQ community? God, you could argue it was probably Catholic school and noticing the priests. Not their behavior; I didn't think anything nefarious was going on. I don't think they were doing
anything horrible to the boys of the school, but I remember thinking, “These men seem effeminate and they carry themselves in a different way, and I think these guys like other men, like other gay men I've seen.” They didn't fit the typical heteronormative archetype. Yeah, exactly. And it was an odd kind of thing, where I thought, “Oh.” I've since come to think maybe the priesthood is like an enclave for people who aren't comfortable with their sexuality and they wanna shut it down and they think, “Please make it go away. I'm just gonna go to this place and go to seminary school and hope that this feeling leaves me,” which is a shame. You strike me as the kind of guy who's surrounded by gay men for various reasons. Yeah, of course. I went to a very progressive high school that had gay boys in it. In college, it becomes quickly normalized. But you can't live in New York and not be friends with every kind of person, whether they're gay, trans, straight, whatever. You were ahead of the game? Well, I think most people in the city or in pockets of the country were kind of ahead of the game. It felt like, “Wait, this conversation is
still happening? Oh yeah, I guess it still is. I guess we do need to keep having this discussion.” (I) marvel at people who are still made uncomfortable by it. Like, how on earth? It's like being made uncomfortable by a sofa; you're like, “It's a sofa.” It couldn't be more normal. You should know that you've been called a “gay men's dream” by the National Enquirer, probably their most accurate reporting. Cut to 10 years later: Ew, who's that old guy? (Laughs) No way. Our gay icons never age. Oh yeah, that's right! So this movie: Was the title The Spy Who Dumped On Me ever considered? (Laughs) It's the James Bond they never made! Idris Elba, Daniel Craig, why wouldn't you do that movie? Susanna's friends call her the “lesbian whisperer.” And, of course, Kate McKinnon is queer and one of two leading ladies in this film. It's so cool. Did you get a lesbian read on Kate McKinnon's character, Morgan, in the movie?
Yeah. But what I liked about her character: again, it wasn't the focal (point). It's kind of ambiguous. What she brought to the part was super hilarious. She works really hard on specific jokes, beats, alternate lines, trying to come up with other stuff that isn't necessarily on the page or in the direction. Kate really goes in and scribbles on the sides (of her script) and it looks like A Beautiful Mind on her script. She approaches her work (in) really sort of (an) academic way. You're long overdue for a gay role. What's the last one I've done? Maybe (my character) Kevin Garvey from The Leftovers is, who knows. Don't tell anybody. No, I'm joking. (Laughs) You could argue he was really putupon and maybe that was the reason why, 'cause he was in a hetero marriage. (Theroux's handler peeks in to say, “One last question.” “Two more,” Theroux whispers, giving me two fingers.) What would you look for in a gay role now? I don't know. It's really always the story. I want the story to be good and compelling. I want the character to be good and compelling, and that could be anything. A la Broken Hearts Club, you do sort of hope that eventually these all
“...it's way more interesting just playing the relationship and playing the story than it is playing the orientation.”
become just the background to the characters, because it's way more interesting just playing the relationship and playing the story than it is playing the orientation. If you were to date any of the guys you have played in your career, which ones might you go for? Personally, I'd shack up with Joe from Six Feet Under. Joe in Six Feet Under was a sweetheart. But if I dated Joe, he was straight, and so I think that would be problematic. He's only straight till he drinks four beers. Until he drinks four beers, then all bets are off! The bondage gear comes out. Like, we all know Joe liked being tied to the bed. (Laughs) I don't know if there's anyone I'd really wanna date. And it's weird to think about dating yourself. Just visually awkward. Actually, Matt McGrath's Broken Hearts character was an adorable character. But I don't know, I played some pretty f*cked up guys, so they all seem like they're not great relationship material. f you've been out and about at LGBT events throughout South Florida in the last 10-plus years, chances are you've encountered Stephen R. Lang. Known as the "Mad Paparazzi," “that bald guy,” and “Mark's List,” Lang has photographed our vibrant nightlife since 2005. Born and raised in Saugerties, N.Y., Lang moved to South Florida in winter 2001. He “fell into” photography when his roommate at the time, local icon Misty Eyez, asked him to take pictures of her on nights out. That led to a gig with online nightlife publication Mark's List (now a part of Hotspots Media), where he earned the name “Mad Paparazzi” while photographing LGBT events all over South Florida. Lang, a self-taught photographer of immense talent, started out using disposable cameras and eventually worked himself up to a Nikon D5200. The more he honed his skills, his lens was drawn to other colorful aspects of South Florida he encountered 52

while out. He began shooting more and more “scenes” around town and started taking photos — be it a set of crumbling steps or a lady in an eye-catching hat — just for art's sake. It's been an exciting year for Lang – he started his own company, SRL Media, and has won an award for his work and dedication to The Smart Ride. And now his work will be featured in his (long overdue) first art show, The Colors of This Life, which will be on exhibit from Aug. 11 through Sept. 7 at Claudia Castillo Art Studio in Wilton Manors. The opening reception is on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m. It was a pleasure to sit down with Lang, a very good friend and former co-worker, to talk about his photography. Tell me about when you first picked up a camera and started shooting pics? I mean, who hasn't had a camera, but slightly professionally was when I was living with Misty Eyez. She said, 'Let's go out' and asked
me to take her picture and then she asked me to be her personal photographer. Wow. So, you fell into it? Literally fell into it. Then how did you get involved in Mark's List? I met Mark in 2005. He asked, 'Hey, do you want to go work with me?' I knew of him because of Misty – she was working with him and Mizz Cori doing this movie thing --"Misty Eyez & Mizz Cori At The Movies." I met him at Java Boys when he was interviewing Misty and Mizz Cori. What was that like? You just immediately fell into nightlife pictures? Yes – I was going places and being seen. I ended up making a lot of connections that help me to this day, and I am very grateful. I used to cry when people would turn me down for photos at China White because people didn't know who I was or what I was doing. The first time I did a [photo] gallery and saw my name I was verklempt. It was awesome. Hotspots.LGBT | 53
................................................. I've been given so many opportunities to capture things. What inspired you to start doing art photography? Insanity. I was going crazy, and I had to find something wonderful to do. It was a pressure release -- when you start finding things that make you happy...just for your own enjoyment. Then you start seeing patterns, then you start looking more and you go on adventures to look for things. I was going to write a book called “Mad Paparazzi Live” or something along those lines, so I started taking pictures of weird, wacky things going on and was going to write a diary sort of thing. It never happened, so I just started taking pictures. An example of weird or wacky? In 2013, I went into the men's room at an event-- it was a girl party at Score in their new location and this girl had literally turned around and used the men's urinal and I took a picture. What photographers do you look up to/inspire you? What inspires you in general? Herb Ritts' '90s black and white stuff. Vivian Meir -- she was an amazing street photographer who no one really knew about 'til after she died. There was a movie about her that was up for an Academy award. I like architecture. I like inanimate objects. People can be difficult. I like light, shapes, patterns, and colors right now. What kind of pieces will be at your show? The theme of this show is called “Colors of this Life” and it's based on my past life hypnosis. I found out that my last life was very bleak, and everything was in black and white and 54
| Hotspots.LGBT
everything I wanted to do was in color. So, there's a pop of color in all of the pieces. What is this show focusing on? What should people expect? Colors. Just colors. Just fun, whimsical colors. Are you excited for your first show? I am! I am flabbergasted! I still can't believe this is happening! Do you understand? It's a little scary in a thrilling, white knuckling way. How did it happen? I'm known Claudia (Castillo) for 4 or 5 years. She always did Art Walk and then got a gallery and we've been friendly ever since. She asked for me to show. I want to say thank you to her for this opportunity. And you'll be showing your work at another show soon. At the Pride Center. Tell me about that. It's a show called Finding Happiness on Thursday, Sept. 27. I'll be showing all different pieces. I'm using Pink's “Perfect” song as a theme and doing new pieces connecting Pink and the song. Do you have any advice for up-and-coming photographers? As much as it will kill you, volunteer for as many gigs as you can. Go to as many things as you can. You have to practice. Get out there and if you want to be a part of something, you have to be a part of it.
Stephen Lang's Colors of This Life art exhibit will be on display through Sept. 7 at Claudia Castillo Gallery, 2215 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors. His opening reception will be on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m.

Adora: Wow the Jewish Museum of Florida, in the oldest Synagogue in Miami Beach, is a great building and has these great shows right now: 'Tennessee Williams, Hotspots.LGBT | 61

Teddy Behr: Yeah, it's the first time I've actually been inside the building, even though we lived a block away back in the 1990's (Washington Avenue at Third Street), but they were restoring it back then. It has a great dome full of light …It was built in the 1930's, and I guess you could call the architecture Middle Eastern Revival - Art Deco. Adora: I really wanted to see Tennessee Williams' paintings: especially the portrait of actor Michael York who starred in 'Cabaret,' but the exhibit on Press Agent/Impressario Charlie Cinnamon was a

bonus. I love the portrait of him in the bathtub…and the photo-collage of the stars he worked with. 'Sexuality Spectrum' was a surprise: about LGBTQ tolerance: A cute mix of photos and other art. Teddy Behr: People tend to know the movies that were made of Tennessee Williams's plays without realizing they were huge Broadway hits first. They were really serious drama's with innovative stories about sexuality and 'adult drama,' people breaking the rules because they didn't care or couldn't help it. Broadway was known for heavy drama as well as Musical Comedy back then, more than for the more spectacle-based extravaganzas features nowadays. Adora: And the stars who
were cast in the movies of his plays: Liz Taylor and Paul Newman ('Cat On A Hot Tin Roof,' and 'Night of The Iguanas'), Marlon Brando ('A Streetcar Named Desire which basicallu launched his stardom), and Ava Gardner…they're all online and really sultry, passionate, and kind of Latin, which I guess the American South can be like a little more than the North. He was obviously an amazing playwright, so it's fun to the see paintings he did. When I saw the portrait of Michael York, who was so cute, I wondered what happened between them. York was a lot younger, but Williams was so famous at that time. People weren't 'OUT,' but they obviously knew who was what; the 'Gaydar' must have been fierce! He also did a Homage
to Jean Genet, the famous French Queer Pioneer, so he was obviously kind of 'OUT,” anyways. Teddy Behr: Yeah, I bet! I guess everything was sort of 'hush-hush,' at least as far as the public was concerned. The idea was that being openly Gay, or 'Outed' was a career-ender. Especially for actors, but it just wasn't. It's still a bit problematical for actors, but we're all working on it. Even if Williams and the slightly-covert sexuality in his plays (and later movies) was just suggestive, like in 'Night of the Iguana' and 'Cat On a Hot Tin Roof', those stories helped bring the subject of Homosexuality out of the closet. If something was going to be seen by a large audience it couldn't hit people over the head, instead it had to hint and suggest, but for sure it all helped bring the whole thing out into public view, little by little. The paintings, Michael York's Portrait and 'She Sang Beyond the Genius' are so sensual and softly passionate, they make me think of Brando calling 'Stella' in 'Streetcar Named Desire.' Adora: I love that the Museum has 3 exhibits with a Gay angle at the same time, as they all kind of run together with the architecture in a fun way. The building is so cool, it's really worth a visit. Teddy Behr: Mmmmm…if
Top: Cinnamon in Bath Left: Homage a Genet Bottom: Elizabeth Taylor in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”
there's a common theme with Tennessee Williams' work and the Charlie Cinnamon show and the 'Sexuality Spectrum' exhibits, it has to be about the on-going conflict of contemporary realities bursting through traditional values, whether the 1950's or '80's or now…so it's kind of timeless.

W
e have an executive branch bursting at the seams with corruption. We have a man-baby tyrant as “president,” likely installed by Russia. We have white supremacists emboldened by the highest reaches of government. Across the country bridges are crumbling, drinking water is poisoned, kids are being taken from their parents and put in cages, and people are still choosing between declaring bankruptcy, or dying, because of our health insurance system. But don't worry. If you're a good Christian who wants to discriminate against gays and lesbians, the U.S. Justice Department has your back. Because priorities. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a noted racist who is this nation's top law enforcement of icer, announced the creation of a so-called "religious liberty task force.” According to The Hill, the task force “will help the department fully implement the religious liberty guidance it issued last year.” The guidance basically amounted to giving Christians the full power and authority to discriminate against LGBTQ people. And any other people they don't like. Think, if you will, of the guidance as a hammer. A hammer by itself doesn't present much of a threat until an arm picks it up and swings it. The new task force is that arm. And the hammer is aimed squarely at the heads of LGBTQ people. Behind this task force's creation is many things, not least of which is this administrations complete and utter disdain for
OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI
civil rights. But there are two big myths at work here. The irst myth is that Christians are persecuted in America. They aren't. Jesus. Full stop. The second myth is that LGBTQ people have a power and dominance in this country that is used to “silence” Christians. Also not true. Funny thing is, if you take those two myths and reverse them, you get closer to the truth. Because this task force is nothing more than Christian dominance in action, used to oppress with the full weight of the federal government behind it. And the story that is being told to justify this whole thing is utter bullshit based on this lie that Christians are under attack in this current “cultural climate,” an allpowerful secular force where drag queens read to kids at local libraries, where a woman can choose whether or not to have children, where a man can kiss another man on the lips and say “I do,” where the building of a mosque or temple in a community causes no more stir than the building of a church. Where equality is an ideal we strive for, not something we ight against. “We've seen nuns ordered to buy contraceptives,” Sessions said while announcing the task force. “We've seen U.S. senators ask judicial and executive branch nominees about dogma—even though the Constitution explicitly forbids a religious test for public of ice. We've all seen the ordeal
Hotspots.LGBT | 67
faced so bravely by Jack Phillips.” Phillips, as you remember, is the baker in Colorado who refused to make a cake for a gay couple. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court. As for nuns forced into buying contraceptives, maybe they're just trying to ward off the Second Coming because they'd be too embarrassed for Jesus to come back and see what assholes so many of his followers have become. “In short, we have not only the freedom to worship—but the right to exercise our faith,” Sessions continued. “The Constitution's protections don't end at the parish parking lot nor can our freedoms be con ined to our basements.” Look, if you're a member of a minority in this country, you are in trouble under this administration. If you're white, heterosexual, cis gender, Christian and, especially, male, then you've got it made. As Charlotte Clymer put it on Twitter: “The
'Religious Liberty Task Force' is a cynical and cruel attempt to enable discrimination against LGBTQ people. That's all this is. It has nothing to do with 'religious liberty.' It's about controlling the bedrooms and bodies of other people.” She is, of course, right. This task force is yet another way for those in power to hurt the most vulnerable populations in this country. Bottom line: we need to throw them out of of ice. You MUST vote. And you must vote for people who recognize you as a person. Republicans keep making it harder to vote because they know the real majority is not silent and is not with them.
The second myth is that LGBTQ people have a power and dominance in this country that is used to “silence” Christians. Also not true.

FORCED REPETITIONS Give it a Little More for Muscle Growth
J
ust when you think that you can hardly lift another pound for one more rep of your last set, this is when you need to give it just a little more. This is the point when real muscle growth takes place- if you're up for the challenge! This is the concept behind forced repetitions – one of the best ways to power through a plateau and make massive gains.
The best way to perform forced repetitions is to grab a workout buddy or personal trainer who can help you summon up that little something extra to get you through the set. While one guy does the lifting, his partner places his hands in the proper position to help him finish one or two more reps he couldn't have completed on his own. Try forced reps with each muscle group a couple of times per month for maximum gains. Using this strategy with every workout is too much and may result in overtraining and injuries like tendonitis. Here's an example of a forced reps exercise for each muscle group.
Barbell Squats: Grasp a barbell on the upper back, with feet shoulder width apart. Lower until

your thighs are parallel to the ground, pause, and then rise to starting position. At the end of your last set, have a partner stand behind you with hands around your torso and have him assist you in completing 2 more reps. Squats are one of the most effective exercises for the lower body, but make sure to keep you back straight and your toes pointed outward as you squat down.
chest presses you can do forced rep flat bench dumbbell chest presses as an alternate exercise.
Triceps Skull Crushers: Lie on a bench and grasp an EZ curl bar at arms length over the chest. Lower it to just above the forehead, pause then return to starting position. For your last set, have a partner stand over you and help you raise and lower the bar for 2 more reps.
Biceps Partial Curls: Grasp an EZ curl bar with arms bent at 90degree angles. Curl up until biceps meet forearms, pause, then lower to starting position. For your last set have a partner face you and help you curl 2 more reps. You can also do alternating forced rep dumbbell curls, Try these seated for a great effect. Barbell Bench Press: Lie face up and grasp a barbell with arms bent at 90degree angles. Press it overhead, pause, and then return to starting position. At the end of your last set have your partner stand over you and help raise and lower the bar for one or two more reps. If you're uneasy about heavy barbell
Pull Ups for Shoulders, Back: Grasp and overhead pull up bar and pull yourself up so that your chin is at or above the bar, pause, then lower yourself. At the end of your last set have your partner grasp your feet and help you do just a couple more reps.

South Florida’s OUTshine is Raising the bar on LGBTQ Film Festivals
6 Ways
1
1. OUTshine's foreign film selection will blow you away
There are plenty of notable LGBTQ film festivals around the country, but the best and most overlooked by our community (in my opinion) is OUTshine, which features two editions – South Beach in the spring and Fort Lauderdale in the fall. I've attended the festival in each city over the past couple years, and I have to give props where props are due: The films are carefully selected; they're representative of LGBTQ life on an encompassing scale; and even though it's held in densely populated South Florida, the festival manages to retain its micro-community feel. Here are six more reasons to attend this year.
If I'm completely honest, I'm a bit judgmental (and disappointed) in the LGBTQ films we produce here in the United States. Largely the plots are the same – it's either two built-like-a-brick-shithouse dudes meeting spontaneously in (enter any city here, but probably Palm Springs) who spend a weekend exploring each other's bodies and falling in “love” before vacation is over, or it's a coming out story we've seen time and again – and that's notwithstanding the quality of the acting and/or filmmaking, which is, more times than not, subpar. I've seen excellent homegrown LGBTQ films, of course, but they're few and far between. On the other hand, foreigners are producing standard-setting films for the genre, and the folks at OUTshine excel at choosing these well-made, dynamic stories.
82 | Hotspots.LGBT
Countries like Britain, Germany, Iceland, Finland and Japan have all entered films that have surprised and elated the festival's audiences – and the films have the awards to prove it. If you're looking to shake up your LGBTQ film queue, I highly recommend French-Canadian film 1:54; the Icelandic drama Heartstone; and Argentina's sexually curious Mi Mejor Amigo.
2. Same goes for films about the transgender experience
