deep inside HOLLYWOOD By Romeo San Vicente

Anna Kendrick takes over Santa's workshop in Noelle It's a sign of the times that films initially slated for theatrical release wind up moving to streaming platforms instead. It's been a winning model for Netflix, stripping films of the stigma of “going straight to video.” And now that Disney is planning to launch its own streaming service, they're going to need fresh content and not simply rely on your urgent, middle-age desire to re-watch The Boatniks. Welcome, then, the Christmas 2019 premiere of Noelle from Marc Lawrence (Miss Congeniality). Starring Anna Kendrick in the title role – last name “Claus” – it's the story of Santa's daughter taking over the toys-for-good-girls-and-boys operation in what we're sure will be the smart, sardonic manner that has made her a queer audience favorite. It co-stars Bill Hader, Shirley Maclaine, Billy Eichner, Airplane! star Julie Hagerty and Family Ties dad Michael Gross. Originally planned for theaters, Noelle will now be a part of that pending Mousestream, and we'll be home on our couch that December avoiding the multiplex for it.

Fosse! Fosse! Fosse! Brace yourselves, Broadway fans, because it's about to get serious on your television. You want musical-theater legends as interpreted by today's musical theater A-listers? FX has what you need. They've given the greenlight to a limited series about legendary director and choreographer Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, his equally legendary dancer-actress spouse. Together, they shaped 20th-century musicaltheater and created classic work that audiences love decades after the fact. The unnamed eightepisode series is from Lin-Manuel Miranda and Thomas Kail, who created and directed Hamilton, and Dear Evan Hansen writer Steven Levenson, Tony Award winners all. Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell will star as Fosse and Oscar nominee Michelle Williams will take on Verdon's role. And, of course, the show will feature Fosse's choreography to sweeten the downside of making it huge in show business. And all that jazz. Romeo San Vicente loves Disney and Broadway. 28 | Hotspots.LGBT

The architecture of the ancient city is built in limestone and includes vestiges of temples that rise more than 70 meters, large royal palaces, as well as a series of smaller pyramids, palaces, residences, administrative buildings,

Quiriguรก National Park. One of the most important archaeological sites in Guatemala next to Tikal, corresponding to an ancient Mayan city that maintained its splendor between the 5th and 6th centuries. Today declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it allows visitors to explore the ruins of its ancient constructions, among which are still appreciable vestiges of the acropolis and its square. Although the architecture of this site is much more modest than Tikal, it presents the value of the richness of its sculpture, housing complex altars, stelae and monuments with exquisitely carved deities. And without forgetting one of the things that makes Guatemala great around the whole world, it is its gastronomy which is rich in flavors and textures. Decido to its ingredients and the fusion of the Spanish and indigenous cultures, emerged as a result dishes with unique flavor, that each generation become the preference of Guatemalans. Guatemalans can taste the typical flavors of street sales, but can also opt for dishes served with a more sophisticated style, which is why we present some delicacies that are prepared in the country. In the dishes are the Clado de Res, Chanfaina and Chuchitos, among many other dishes.

VOTER SUPPRESSION

OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI

T

hey say if you don't vote you can't complain. This is actually not true. You can complain all you want. Especially if you're someone who has been blocked from voting. And in the U.S., we block a whole lot of people from voting. It's supposed to be a super important right, but it's often easier to buy a gun than it is to vote. Around every election, especially presidential ones, we hear about voter roll purges on the news. Often, these purges are performed in Republicancontrolled states and the people purged just happen to be — oh gosh wouldn't you know it — people in heavily Democratic areas. When these people show up to vote, not knowing that their name has been thrown off the list, they can't. It is a matter of record that Republicans do not like it when people vote, especially when it's brown and black people voting. They holler and cry about “voting integrity,” claiming that onerous voter ID laws are the only way to protect this cherished institution. And yet they also work behind the scenes to make it as hard as possible, or at least stand in the way of making it easy. Remember way back in 2000? The hanging chad fiasco? Lawmakers declared that we needed better laws about voting! So the Help America Vote Act was passed in 2002. And it solved all of our problems, the end, goodnight.

Just kidding. HAVA established some standards for elections and created the Election Assistance Commission. It also got rid of punch card ballots. However, all the HAVAs in the world can't help when one of the major parties is actively hostile toward voting rights (and welcomed interference from Russia into our elections to boot). It also doesn't help that Democrats have often ignored this issue, taking for granted that a large swath of their supporters often have to jump through extra hoops to get to the polls. The more hoops a person has to jump through, the less likely they are to vote. And it's not because they're lazy. It's because they're tired. And if you have never found voting to be a challenge at all, if you've always been able to breeze in and out of your polling place to use shiny new voting equipment, never worrying about whether or not you had the proper ID or that your name might be crossed off the list, using your own reliable transportation while on your lunch break from your job that gives its employees time off to vote, congratulations. Please note your privilege and keep it in mind when you judge other people for not voting. And be very skeptical of anyone who says that the problem with elections in this country is voter fraud, because that is simply Hotspots.LGBT | 69

not true. Trump may say that 3,000,000 “illegals voted in the 2016 election, thereby denying him the popular vote, but there is absolutely no evidence of that. Not to mention the fact that it would have required a conspiracy among election officials on an epic scale. But then, of course, Trump is a big fan of conspiracies. Voter suppression, however, is very real. People who scheme to find ways to get fewer people to vote are anti-American and antiDemocratic. If a person wants to make it easy for you to get an assault rifle but wants to make it hard for you to cast a vote, then that person can stop claiming that they care about is constitutional right. Also, they're probably a Republican. As I write this it is the eve of the 2018 primary election. By the time you read this, people who

want nothing more than to destroy the civil rights gains LGBTQ people have made (and those people will mostly be Republicans) will be real contenders for offices far and wide. Find out who is running where you live and for what offices. And don't wait until November. Find a candidate you support and get involved in their campaign. Voting alone is not enough. If you don't vote, go ahead and complain all you want. But chances are you'll have a lot less to complain about if you are part of the process.

... it's often easier to buy gun than it is to vote.

T

hose who serve our communities as police, firefighters and paramedics have got to be in great shape- lives depend on it! If you think you've got what it takes to make the grade, check out their workouts, or at least you can incorporate a few of their training maneuvers into your own routine. Generally, most fitness assessments for police recruits vary from state to state, and include a combination of sit-ups, push-ups, pullups, and a mile run; others will add speed, agility and jumping tests. Most fire departments in this country use the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) to measure prospective candidates. This test of job-related functions comprises eight exercise drills done one after the other in less than 10 minutes. During the test, the candidates wear a 50lb. vest to simulate wearing the selfcontained breathing apparatus!

The CPAT Test Stair Climb: Recruits must climb 60 steps in 3 minutes carrying two 12.5 lb. weights.

Hose Drag: The candidate places the end of a 200foot hose on his/her shoulders and drags it 75 feet around a barrier, making a 90-degree turn, and then dragging it another 25 feet.

Equipment Carry: Candidates must remove two saw horses from a cabinet and then place them, one at a time, on the ground. Then they must carry the saws 75 feet, around a barrier and back to the starting point. Hotspots.LGBT | 75

Ladder Raise and Extension: The candidate picks up a 24-foot aluminum extension ladder, and raises it, rung by rung, so it ends up against a wall. Then the candidate moves to another ladder and raises it via a pulley standing on a 3x3 foot box.

Forcible Entry: The candidate uses a 10lb. sledgehammer to strike a measuring device until a buzzer sounds.

Search: Recruits must crawl on hands and knees in a 64ft. tunnel maze that is four feet wide and three feet high. The tunnel has two 90-degree turns.

Rescue Drag: The candidate grabs the shoulders of a 165lb. mannequin and drags it 35 feet, around a barrier, and back to the starting point.

Ceiling Breach and Pull: The candidate uses a pike pole to push up a 60lb. hinged door three times and then use the pike pole to pull an 80lb. door downward five times. EMT standards are also rigorous. Tests usually involve either a standard fitness test, like the ones used by police; or a more functional test, like those used by firefighters. Most paramedics train six days per week. Here's a typical workout: Warm-Up: Stairmaster for 4 minutes; dumbbell lunges (3 sets of 10 reps); standing cable wood chops (3 sets of 10 reps); jumping squats, not weighted (3 sets of 10 reps). Strength Training: front barbell squats (3 sets of 6-8 reps); standing dumbbell press (3 sets of 6-8 reps); pull-ups (3 sets of 6-8 reps); push-ups (2-3 sets of 50 reps); sand bag load (2-3 sets of 100 feet) Cardio: weighted vest walk (2 miles); running treadmill (1.5 miles). The Freeing of

MATT DALLAS

“Kyle XY” alum talks new film, living in the Hollywood closet and leaving L.A. to focus on fatherhood By Chris Azzopardi att Dallas can laugh now, but his former life as a gay man living as a straight man wasn't a joke. Dallas was told to stay in the closet after moving to L.A. to pursue acting at 18, particularly while portraying boyishly cute titular character with the non-existent navel on ABC Family's 2006launched teen sci-fi drama _Kyle XY_. Other roles followed: he starred alongside Hilary Duff in ABC Family's 2010 TV film “Beauty & the Briefcase," and also played Katy Perry's war-vet boyfriend in her 2009 “Thinking of You” music video and, that same year, Rebecca Romijn's love interest, Chad, on ABC's supernatural dramedy "Eastwick." 86

| Hotspots.LGBT

And then in 2013, Hollywood closet be damned, Dallas came out publicly, matter-offactly announcing his engagement to nowhusband Blue Hamilton. In 2015, they adopted their son, Crow. Dallas' latest project, _Along Came the Devil_, is a fresh horror-genre venture for the 35year-old actor, who starred in a glut of slasher films at the onset of his career, including 2005's _Camp Slaughter_ and 2008's _Babysitter Wanted_. In this demonic endeavor he plays a pastor, the kind you know only exists in the movies (if only they were this hot in real life). Here, Dallas opens up about denying being gay on _The Howard Stern Show_ (“the worst day of my life”), how coming out freed him and moving to Colorado to put family first.

I was afraid to come out. Sure, people still are today. But I do think as a society and an industry we have come so far. Hotspots.LGBT | 87

What about horror appeals to you? Honestly, I had done horror films early in my career and felt like I maxed out on doing horror films, but when I read this screenplay I was excited about it because it wasn't necessarily a slasher film. It wasn't just straight-up horror; it was such a throwback to the exorcism films of the '60s and '70s, so I was excited to get to do something that played in a different world. And it played with demons, and I loved the whole spiritual aspect of it, and to play a pastor was something so different or me, so it was an exciting way to come back to the genre. What are you looking for in projects at this point in your career? I recently moved to Colorado, and my life has taken such a lifestyle shift. But it's getting to play roles that I haven't gotten to necessarily play in the past, whether it be a pastor or a villain or just things that are a part of myself that I haven't gotten to explore. That, for me, is the biggest attraction to a project now. How is life in Colorado? Life is very different in Colorado. Is this what happens when you become a father? You move to Colorado? Honestly, that was a big part of it. I was going back and forth between L.A. and Phoenix – I grew up in Phoenix; my family's there – and there was a part of me that felt like I wasn't ready to necessarily totally walk away from

L.A. So, we sold our house in Phoenix and went back to L.A. for a few months and we were there for seven months. That seven months was exactly what I needed to let my time in Los Angeles be what it was and move onto the next chapter in my life. And it was a lot about being a father. Having a child in L.A., life was so much more difficult; that city is really just so consumed by industry that I wanted to shift my priorities so that it was family first, and let work be something that I love and enjoy, but not something that consumes my life. It was a lot easier to do outside of Los Angeles, and yeah, my husband grew up in Colorado and it was always his dream to live in the Rocky Mountains. And I love the mountains. It just seemed like a natural next step for us. Earlier this year you did a throuple episode of your vlog _Matt and Blue_ with model-director Max Emerson. A lot of strong opinions were shared on the internet about you two exploring being a throuple in that video. Is that something you've seriously considered? We actually did a whole series where we're like, “We're gonna just have fun and script some things.” And it was supposed to be for fun, but it's crazy how many people really took it seriously. But no, being in a throuple is nothing we'd ever really considered. We just wanted to make something that is very true in the gay community and something that is very relevant, and have fun with it. Do you think it's easier now for actors to be out from the get-go? One-hundred percent. I should say, I don't know. It's definitely a different time. When we were shooting _Kyle XY_, I still had agents at the time and people telling me that I had to hide being gay and had to work with a speech coach and go on carpets with a girl on my arm. We were just in a very different point in society than we are

88

| Hotspots.LGBT

now. I was in my early 20s, I had finally just had my first taste of real success, and felt like I could accomplish what I had come to L.A. to do but like it was all being taken away from me. I was so afraid of that happening, because I had so many people in my head telling me how to act and how to behave. I was afraid to come out. Sure, people still are today. But I do think as a society and an industry we have come so far. Now, we celebrate individuality. Especially in the industry, we still have a ways to go. We still don't see openly gay actors play leading men roles. You have _Love, Simon_, but we don't have an openly gay actor playing a superhero yet or playing a _Mission: Impossible_ character. In 2006, you appeared on _The Howard Stern Show_ and denied claims Perez Hilton had made that you were gay. Have you followed up with Howard on this? (Laughs) No. That was the last time I spoke to him. Dude, that was just the worst day of my life. I woke up – it was 3 a.m. Los Angeles time – to do this interview. I was so unprepared to go on _Howard Stern_, and I should've known better. My publicist told me at the time – promised me, swore up and down – that he would not bring up the whole gay thing. It wasn't even a minute or two, and the whole interview became about it. Fifteen minutes of you being asked how many women you'd slept with. It was brutal. I remember sweating and being so nervous the whole interview because I was just not prepared to handle that. I was so naive, everything. And I literally hung up from that and went and crawled in bed under the blanket and would not get up that entire day. I just should not have taken that interview to begin with, but I was like, “Howard Stern! My dad loves Howard Stern! I'm gonna do his show!” And I was most embarrassed for my dad to hear it, more than anybody else. I was just like, “Ugh, my dad listening to me go on for 15 minutes about all the girls I slept with in

high school.” (Laughs) I can laugh about it now. Do you think LGBTQ actors are still forced to stay in the closet by Hollywood handlers? Yeah, I'm sure, but we're in a different place now. As a society, we're more used to talking about it. So, these actors have seen other people go through this already; there are a lot more openly gay actors and more options of how to handle it now than there was then, when it was so swept under the rug. There was no blueprint. How did coming out change your career? It freed me. And it allowed me to just give less a fuck. It was very freeing as an artist, as an actor and just as a human being, and it changed a lot in that way. It also changed in that, now, most of the roles I get sent are for gay roles. Unless my team is actively going after another role that's not gay, the ones that come to me are mostly all gay roles. How do you feel about that? It doesn't bother me. I'm glad there are a lot more gay roles than there used to be. I do think I should be — in the same way that every straight actor is considered for every gay role, gay actors should be considered just as much for straight roles. We're on the path to that. The Frivolist By Mikey Rox

7 Gay Tips For Throwing the Perfect Labor Day Party For many of us, Labor Day is summer's last hurrah. It's the weekend when we put away the beach chairs, condition the twinks to go to bed earlier, and mentally prepare ourselves for the colder seasons ahead. Considering the depressing nature of all that Labor Day symbolically signifies, it's more than enough reason to throw one last shindig. To make your final fun-in-the-sun party a success, here are a few things you can do to help your guests remember you fondly as they head into fall.

1. Limit the guest list This won't be as hard as it seems since a lot of people head out of town to get in that one last trip to the beach, woods, or wherever else it is they wanna fuck to spice up their relationship after dark. Evite is the eco-friendly alternative I live by when sending out invitations – and perfectly appropriate for a Labor Day fete – but more thoughtful DIY invitations can be made with just a few steps. By keeping the list short, you'll reduce the amount of prep and clean-up work you'll have to do, and you'll have more quality time to spend with individual guests.

1

96 | Hotspots.LGBT

Make your final fun-in-the-sun party a success

2. Decorate but don't overdo it The old idiom “less is more” is in our collective lexicon for a reason – a little bit goes a long way. A few well-placed votive candles and brightly colored lanterns can make your patio pop while a simple yet well-dressed table can create an upscale aesthetic. Use real plates and silverware instead of paper and plastic products, and keep cloth napkins together with personalized party favors you made yourself.

2

3. Keep the menu simple but surprising Come August, most of us are sick of hamburgers and hot dogs – or at least the gut-busting buns (why are we even werking out, kweens?!). Sure, they're an American staple, but how much processed meat can one eat over the course of a few months? (I once attended a party where the box of frozen burgers said grade-A meat, not beef. No thank you!) Instead, treat your guests to grilled salmon, mushroom bruschetta, shrimp shish kebab, BBQ pizza, and light-and-refreshing pasta salads that leave them satisfied but not stuffed.

3

4. Create a signature cocktail Rather than buying umpteen bottles of liquor to accommodate every drinker's preference, choose one spirit to serve as the main ingredient in a signature drink. An easy-breezy crowd pleaser is the adult Arnold Palmer with one part sweet-tea vodka and two parts lemonade poured into a pitcher of ice. So the kids (and your alcoholfree guests) don't feel left out, create the same cocktail in a virgin version. Add lemon wedges and fresh mint and serve. If you're serving beer as well, choose one full flavor and one light beer selection – Corona and Amstel Light, for example. Like the liquor, you don't have to feel obligated to pick up a six-pack of everyone's favorite brew. E-mail your menu ahead of time and inform guests that they're welcome to bring anything that's not on the list.

4

Hotspots.LGBT | 97

5. Don't forget the desserts Summer's ending – and that calls for comfort food. You don't have to gorge your guests, but you should have a selection of sweets on hand to make your meal complete. For me, cake, cookies and pies are out this time of year. Basically anything that requires baking, I'm not making – at least not in August. Root beer floats are easy to assemble and enjoyed by many. Fill frosty mugs with a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream and top with root beer until a frothy head forms (you know what that looks like). A fruity trifle is also an inspired choice (and it goes a long way), particularly if you layer it with store-bought pound cake, lemon curd, whipped cream, and fresh raspberries.

4

6. Plan to play games A deck of cards is great to have on hand, but those games can last well into the night – or morning. If you're not a fan of cards, plan more active activities, like a water-balloon toss, egg races and a horseshoe tournament. You may wince, but everyone secretly still loves that stuff – so don't let me hear your queer ass deny it. In addition, set up a slip-and-slide for the otters (if you don't have a pool, that is – they need to show off young and wet somehow), and fill a festive piñata with candy and small “toys” for added enjoyment.

6

7. Set a budget and start/end times If the party is scheduled to end at 11 p.m., start winding it down around 9:30. Slyly clear the table or whatever setup you've erected, offer your guests coffee, ask them what their day looks like tomorrow, and thank them for joining you. Except for the really hot ones; offer them a place to sleep, obvi. If your guests have had too much to drink, allow them to stay longer or overnight – even the unfortunate-in-the-face ones (you're doing God's work tonight). If it's a lingering twink, call their mom and an Uber. You'll both be better for it in the morning.
