Robin Roberts is having the Lifetime of her life

The Romanoffs cast Andrew Rannells and Clea Duvall Matthew Weiner, creator of Mad Men, has a new series in development, The Romanoffs, and it has a huge cast. That's because it's an anthology

..Rannells tends to play funny gay men, which always makes us happy from a funny gay man respresentation standpoint. series that will revolve around eight different stories of people who believe themselves to be descendants of the Russian royal family. Listing them all would take up every bit of room in this column, so

28 | Hotspots.LGBT

here's a few: Aaron Eckhart, Kathryn Hahn, Diane Lane, Radha Mitchell, Amanda Peet, Corey Stoll, Isabelle Huppert, as well as Mad Men alums Christina Hendricks, John Slattery and Jay R. Ferguson. But all we care about for now is the queer inclusive casting of Veep's Clea DuVall and Girls' Andrew Rannells. DuVall's career assortment of characters have been all over the map, but Rannells tends to play funny gay men, which always makes us happy from a funny gay man representation standpoint. All of that to say we assume he'll play a funny gay man here, too, and even if we weren't already in because we're hardcore fans for Mad Men, we'd make this appointment television. The show hits Amazon in October.

Robin Roberts is making movies for Lifetime now. The cable network is already known for their original movies (our favorite: Baby Monitor: Sound of Fear, because seriously you guys) but now they're really planning to do battle with Hallmark, presumably improve the quality – hopefully not too much – pushing out 75 of them in 2019. Roberts has signed on to produce a series under the banner Robin Roberts Presents, and they'll be a mix of narrative features and documentaries. The first two will feature singer-activist

ROBERTS Mahalia Jackson and adult kidnap survivor Alexis Manigo, and both films will be accompanied by documentaries about their respective subjects. Now, Lifetime, please keep the prestige angle balanced and hand the producing reins over to someone like John Waters. We need more stuff like Pregnancy Pact. Romeo San Vicente sleeps with danger just like Tori Spelling.

The out pop star on his uninhibited second album, finding power in femininity and his journey to empowerment

By Chris Azzopardi

Nobody is stopping Troye Sivan except for maybe Troye Sivan. No queer-averse label bosses, no identity-stifling pressure to be anything but who he is: the LGBTQ community's precious paradigm of unapologetic, unicornian queerness. But even with the YouTube-launched pop fixture's steady mainstream rise, with assists from Ariana Grande on a single featured on his sophomore album, Bloom, and a live duet at a recent Taylor Swift concert, the 23-year-old's follow-up to 2015's Blue Neighborhood refuses to sacrifice self for commercialism. And he won't stop there this time, not during this album cycle (or ever): In the 36

| Hotspots.LGBT

seductive video for the album's first single, “My My My!,” Sivan works a room doused in the carnal grit and flashing lights of a gay bar's seedy backroom – and also an entire street – in a blistering heat as hot as the shirtless guys feeding his desire. He's coy about its subject matter, but Sivan wrote an entire song about bottoming too. I tell the South African-born, Australianreared Sivan that “Bloom,” notably an official single, is the perfect Monday song to crank on your way to work, or at a family gathering. Its gay-sex specificity perhaps lost on heterosexuals, the anthemic send-up is concurrently a love song and the most

liberating of queer secrets. Giggling, he tells me, “That was the goal.” Elsewhere, the celebratory, spirited and brazenly gay Bloom turns the page on Sivan's youth, which was cast with wistfulness and, admittedly, tentativeness on Blue Neighborhood, his first Capitol Records album. That same sentimental lilt – but now, with winks – also marks his burgeoning adult years captured on Bloom: losing his virginity to an older man during a Grindr hookup (the dreamlike, fraught-with-realness “Seventeen”); recognizing he's failed his better half (the tender and winsome “The Good Side”); and a strutting, newfound sexual liberation, with “Bloom” and “My My My!” Sivan's transparency is hardwired: He truly can't be anything but himself. This is clear on Bloom, but holds true during conversation, as Sivan talks about deriving power from femininity, working through residual queer issues, and dealing with the fear of shooting “My My My!” with a crew of dudes bigger than him. Did you imagine you'd be answering all these questions about sex after “Bloom” was unleashed into the world? No way. Honestly, I never would've thought I would have written that song. That song came out of a session that I felt wasn't going too well. It was me and my best friend (and producer) Leland, us being like, “OK, well how do we make the most of this day? Let's just start messing around and having fun.” And we wrote it that night – never, ever thought that it would see the light of day. We ended up with something that I thought was really, really cool and interesting and real.

had a different set of goals, which were to really, actually, accurately represent where I feel like I am in my life. And if it's talking about going out and partying, or if it's talking about staying at home and cooking in the kitchen – or if it's talking about sex – whatever it is, I wanted a 20-year-old queer person to hear this and be like, “Oh yeah, this is, like, legit.” What influenced you to deliver something more queer-specific? It was having all of these really inspiring experiences and meeting all of these really inspiring people. You know, whenever I start writing music, my number one goal, always, is to keep things honest and real, because I think it's the only way to stay relevant and stay true over a long career. I wanna be doing this for the rest of my life, and I don't know if I'm gonna be able to be thinking about cool concepts and things like that for the rest of my life. But I'll always be able to speak about where I am in my life, that's always gonna be there. So I fall back on that, and I wanted to not hold anything back. It's so cool to me to be able to celebrate all of those things I was celebrating in my real life. So, why not go for it and talk about that on the album?

“Its gay-sex specificity perhaps lost on heterosexuals, the anthemic send-up is concurrently a love song and the most liberating of queer secrets.”

Mainstream culture has come around to same-sex love, but gay sex is still taboo. Does your frankness about gay sex on this album feel radical or political? Not really. I wanted to make music for people like me. The first album I was conscious of trying to keep things really digestible for as many people as possible. This time around I

When did the album's more defiantly queer narrative begin to take shape artistically? It was probably just the moment where I had immersed myself in the LGBTQ community. When I think about my real life, I have almost exclusively queer people around me in L.A. I'm living in this little bubble right now where I forget sometimes that it's a thing and that there are, like, straight people in the world (laughs). I'm sure that you're reminded when you perform in small towns that aren't like West Hollywood. Right, exactly. And then I travel to somewhere like that or I'll go home to Australia – or I'll Hotspots.LGBT | 37

just read the news – and very quickly get reminded just how lucky I am and how specific my experience is. But my hope is that it's an experience of hope for people, that they hear this and feel like, “Oh, that's possible and I can go and live this happy and healthy and fulfilled, fun life.” And see that there is, 100 percent, another side to the world. For some gay people, coming out doesn't mean the personal battle has been won – there's still overcoming sexual repression. I feel like you work through some of that on this album. Probably, yeah. Totally. And I think just in general a lot of the residual issues that queer people deal with have also completely followed me into my older life, just internalized homophobia that I've held onto without meaning to from when I was, like, 13 or whatever. It's like, “Oh no, you can't talk about that or you can't sing about that.” I'm doing my very, very best to actively throw all that away. It's been really empowering. What has been the most challenging part of navigating the music industry as an unapologetically out gay man? Normal music industry stuff. I came into the industry at the perfect time for me, a time where people were willing to let me be who I am and say what I want and do what I want, so that's been the biggest blessing. All that really leaves is just personal challenges of like, what do I want from my career? Am I making sure that I'm releasing the very best thing that I possibly can? And what's inspiring to me? And do I want this to be a radio smash, and if I do, how am I gonna get there? Or do I just want this to be something that means something to people, and how am I gonna get there? It's been fairly typical music industry stuff, which I feel really thankful for, because I think 10 years ago, it would've been a whole separate set of worries and issues that now feel much more intense than dire. Is your goal to make gay radio smashes? I actually don't know. For me, I've walked this line between having a really young, active online audience – a similar audience that you would see at an Ariana Grande or Justin Bieber show – and then also wanting to do these really subversive 38

| Hotspots.LGBT

queer pop songs. I think my approach to it is not thinking too much about what I want commercially, just letting things happen, making stuff that I like. Hopefully if I like it, somebody else is gonna like it. When you performed “The Good Side” on SNL in January, I got lost in you getting lost in the song. For a performance like that, are you in the moment? Or does your mind tend to wander beyond the performance? I'm mostly just in the moment. Sometimes I think about the lyrics. I try not to think about them too much because, like “Good Side,” it's one of the most personal songs on the album

“I feel so liberated and free, and I'm having fun. And femininity is magical. Who wouldn't want to be feminine?”

and that can get kind of weird, being that vulnerable, so I try not to let myself go too deep into the hole. But in general, I'm just thinking about doing the song justice. You have a role in the forthcoming film Boy Erased, starring Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe as parents who send their child to a conversion-therapy camp. What about the film resonated with you? The script. I just couldn't put the script down. It really tore at me. Then I read the book and started immersing myself as much as I

possibly could in that world. My coming out experience – and the moment where I accepted my sexuality as something that I couldn't change – was a weight off of my chest. This wasn't for me to deal with; it was more for everyone else. I had come to the point where I had accepted it within myself, and then it was about navigating through the rest of the world: my family, my friends. So, the thought of going to a program like the one in the film at that crucial, vulnerable moment and being told, “No, this is 100 percent back on you, and you're filling a God-shaped hole in your life with these tendencies” was one of the most harmful and hurtful things that I can imagine. It's been proven to be ineffective

that was a moment where I really had to actively pep talk myself into it. I knew that was the way I naturally wanted to move to the song, and that was the way the song made me feel, but that didn't make it any easier to do in a big group of people – especially with burly cameramen! (Laughs) It was scary! But when I pushed through, I felt how amazing it felt. It felt so right, and now I have to retrain my brain a little bit to be able to do that on stage and to be able to do that in front of other people. How do you get into that mental space? It's a really active decision that I have to make. I have to actually think about it and push through a lot of nerves and vulnerability. And, again, the only reason I do it is because it's what feels right to me. That's what I would do in private. So, why the hell not do it publicly, and celebrate that? You were scared of your feminine attributes as a child. Can you tell me about your journey to embracing femininity? And when you do embrace it now, how it makes you feel? I was really scared of it in my childhood, and it was something that I definitely tried to shy away from. Now, I celebrate it as such a source of power for myself. I feel so liberated and free, and I'm having fun. And femininity is magical. Who wouldn't want to be feminine? It took me a second to get to that point, but now that I'm here it's so fun to be able to push through all of those worries. On the other side of that is such a liberated existence where you can just do whatever you want, and it's just been a pleasure.

and extremely dangerous, and you're signing these kids up for an impossible task. It really hit home and struck a chord with me, and I haven't wanted anything as bad as I wanted this role in this movie, so I just auditioned and thankfully got the part.

How would you compare where you were to where you are now? It's like night and day. It feels really artistically inspiring to me, really personally inspiring. And I'm just much happier.

Your sister once caught you in a vulnerable state, dancing to Madonna's “Like a Prayer.” When did you become comfortable with that kind of vulnerability on stage? It's still really new to me. I think the “My My My!” video was a huge step for me personally;

Palm Springs A Gay Resort Town!

By: Ed Walsh | Photos: Ed Walsh

44

Within the same hour in Palm Springs, California, I went from soaking in the sun poolside at the gay resort, InnDulge, to walking through six feet of snow on a mountain summit. The Southern California desert oasis about two hours east of Los Angeles is one of the country's gayest cities. It has it all from high desert hiking to upscale dining, all complemented by the world's largest number of gay resorts. Palm Springs irst became a favorite getaway for Hollywood stars in the 1920s when studio contracts often required actors to be within a two-hour drive of Los Angeles. The desert city it the bill allowing stars to get away but still be close enough to be called back to work. The city was also a natural haven for closeted LGBT actors and Hollywood insiders. Palm Springs' burgeoning gay population in the 1970s played a big part in the revitalization of the city that continues today. The biggest gay event is Palm Springs is the White Party (www.jereysanker.com). This year it runs April 26-29, 2019. It used to run earlier in the spring but the later date ensures warmer weather for the pool parties and

| Hotspots.LGBT

nighttime events. The lesbian party The Dinah (http://thedinah.com/) gets a head start running April3-7, 2019. HOW TO GET THERE

Palm Springs has one of the easiest smallcity airports you will ind anywhere. The airport is just two miles from downtown. Renting a car there is a breeze. You only have to walk a few steps from the airport car rental booth to your car. When you ly back home, you can enjoy your last few minutes of desert sunshine in the park the airport created on the tarmac. WiFi is free, but unfortunately, I found

it doesn't work most of the time. If you are a big Uber or Lyft user, ridesharing services are not allowed to pick up passengers the airport, you have to walk across the street to call one from the curb. But the car services are allowed to drop passengers off there. . There are no nonstop lights to Palm Springs from Florida but several airlines will get you there with a connection. You can also ly into the Ontario, California, airport which is about an hour's drive away. If you don't mind a long ride, Los Angeles' airport is a two hour drive in good traf ic, but LA traf ic is often not good. WHERE TO STAY

Palm Springs has 21 gay men's resorts. Sadly, the only lesbian resort, Casitas Laquita, changed ownership last year and is now mixed. Of the men's resorts, all are clothing optional except for the East Canyon Hotel and Spa. All provide free WiFi and all provide a free continental breakfast ranging from coffee and pastries to more elaborate spreads. All the gay resorts are in the city of Palm Springs with the exception of the Cathedral City Boys Club (CCBC) which is in neighboring Cathedral City. When comparing rates note that CCBC charges a resort fee of about $20 per night but the other resorts do not. The busiest times and consequently the highest room rates are from around Valentine's Day through May. Palm Springs is becoming increasingly popular in the summer. The average summertime high temperature is about 105 degrees but it is a very dry heat and there are no mosquitoes.

Por otro lado, Nelson necesita aumentar su porcentaje de votantes entre los hispanos independientes y los puertorriqueños mientras continúa obteniendo una pluralidad de cubanos. for Progress and the Power 4 Puerto Rico coalition announced the results of a major survey of Latino voters in Florida including voter registration status, and opinions on some of the state's and the nation's most pressing issues, noted candidates and officials. The survey notes that half of the Latino electorate in Florida is now Cuban and Puerto Rican (28% and 22% respectively) reflecting a demographic shift of voters, accelerated by the recent migration of Puerto Ricans after Hurricane Maria. The various Latino groups' opinions are similar on immigration and attitudes towards climate change, but differ politically. For

example, 77% of all Latinos believe global warming is happening, including 78% of Puerto Ricans and 71% of Cubans. However, politically, almost two of every three Puerto Ricans rate Trump unfavorably (62% to 28%) while Cubans are more favorable, 55% to 35% unfavorable. The response of governmental entities and officials to the recent wave of Puerto Ricans settling in Florida is believed to be appropriate by 41% of all Latinos in the state, including 46% of Puerto Ricans and 51% of Cubans. However, President Trump's performance is harshly criticized. Only 28% of all Latinos believe he has done enough, “the right amount”, while 58% indicate he has not done enough. The criticism is harshest among Puerto Ricans with almost three of every four indicating that the President has not done enough: 72%. The treatment of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria ravaged the island has become a unifying factor among Latino voters in Florida. When asked about

important issues that Florida's next U.S. Senator should address, rebuilding of Puerto Rico emerges as key for 64% of the Latino electorate, with 82% of Puerto Ricans and 58% of Cubans indicating it is a priority for them. Many political pundits, including both Republican and Democratic operatives, believe that this year's senatorial race could be decided by the Latino vote. Latino voters in the state view both Governor Rick Scott and Senator Bill Nelson more favorably than unfavorably: Rick Scott (46% favorable, 35% unfavorable) and Bill Nelson (34%, 26%). But still two of every Latino voters (40%) cannot rate Nelson while only one in five (19%) cannot rate Scott's performance. In spite of this “knowledge” gap, Nelson has a small lead over Scott on an election contest, 44% to 41% with 15% undecided. The key to Nelson's victory among Latinos depends on continuing to get a large percentage of Cubans (33% over 57% for Scott), while consolidating the Puerto Rican vote. Puerto Ricans now prefer Nelson, but only 44 to 33% with 19% undecided. Nelson should be worried since two key Puerto Rican constituencies – Puerto Rican men and non-college graduate Puerto Ricans – are now in the Scott column. Overall, Nelson does best with women 55+ (50%), among college graduates (49%), in the North (55%), East (50%) and Orlando Region (52%), and among

Democrats (72%). Nelson leads among independents, 43% to 35%. Scott does best with Republicans (78%), men 55+ (48%), non-college men (48%), in Miami (49%) and with Cuban Americans (57%). On issues, job creation, affordable housing, immigration and climate change emerge as key issues for Latinos. On an openended question, over one in five (22%) raised immigration, like family separations and Dreamers, as the key issue affecting them. Jobs (9%) and health-related issues (7%) were distant second and third on their list of problems. But a deeper dive into these issues show 83%, including 84% of Puerto Ricans and 89% of Cubans, believe creating jobs has to be a high priority for the next Senator. Expanding health coverage is of high importance to 76% of all Latino voters, especially among Puerto Ricans, 81%. Most Latinos (61%) believe that the State of Florida has not done enough to create housing, including similar responses by both Puerto Ricans and Cubans, 62% and 55% respectively.

Puerto Rico después del huracán Maria. On the issue of global warming, most believe it is happening 77% of Latinos agree on this reality and 76% believe it is serious. Both Cubans and Puerto Ricans believe that global warming is real, 71% and 78% respectively, and even 56% of Latino Republicans believe it is happening. The current political situation in the country is impacting Latinos in Florida both electorally and politically. Almost eight out of every ten Latinos (78%) indicate they will be voting in more elections. Many Latinos, particularly Puerto Ricans, indicate they will be registering others to vote, 65% and 67% respectively. Large numbers of Latinos are so motivated politically that 45% indicate they will be attending political events and 44% assert they will get involved in political campaigns. Hotspots.LGBT | 61

Imagine that you are applying for a job. Your prospective employer asks to see a resume, references and a cover letter laying out how your experience matches their needs. But you say to the employer, “I'll give that to you, but only after you hire me.” The employer would show you the door. Rightly so. That's not the way getting a job works. Unless, of course, you're Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Republicans are rushing to get this guy confirmed before his records are released to the Senate. In other words, the GOP wants to give a lifetime appointment to a guy who hasn't shown them his resume. Oh no, Republicans say, We aren't doing anything out of the ordinary. This is TOTALLY NORMAL and Democrats are being whiny babies for wanting to properly vet Kavanaugh. It's just not fair, Republicans say. We'd never do anything like that to a SCOTUS nominee named by a Democrat. Except they did. Actually what Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans did was steal a U.S. Supreme Court seat from President Obama. Merrick Garland should be sitting on the bench right now. Instead, we have Neil Gorsuch, nominated by Trump. And now we're just one justice away from the very real possibility of overturning Roe v. Wade and scrapping marriage equality. No wonder the GOP is all “damn the torpedos” on this. It's worth noting that crowding this travesty

Trump hired Omarosa, Mike Flynn, Carter Page, George Papadopolous, Paul Manafort, Rick Gates and Rob Porter. Now he wants Senate Dems to blindly accept his nominee for a LIFETIME appointment to the Supreme Court for Brett Kavanaugh? No. Release the documents.” But the GOP is like, "Nah, we're good." People who for some reason think that the Republican party has a conscience are often puzzled as to why socalled members of the Christian right have embraced Trump even though Trump is the epitome of all they've claimed to stand against over the years. But this is it. The Supreme Court has always been the goal. And if Trump can deliver the Supreme Court to them then he can literally do no wrong. It should worry you that people who hate LGBTQ people can't heap praise on Kavanaugh fast enough. “President Trump promised a constitutionalist – someone who will call balls and strikes according to the Constitution,” said Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, an anti-LGBTQ

HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti

Start Your Day Like a Champion:

EAT BREAKFAST!

W

hat's the first thing on your mind in the morning once you bound out of bed? Conference calls, meetings at work, emails to answer, appointment at the vet, call the service guy to check your AC- all these and more are vying for your time and attention. As you shower and groom, you try to prioritize what you need to tackle first. Occasionally, when you think of it, you grab a day-old doughnut or gulp down a bowl of cereal. Then you're off and running. Well, I hate to break this to you, but your priorities are messed up and your day just

might suffer for it! When you skip breakfast, your body goes into a starvation mode, so it responds by storing fat more readily. Without a healthy dose of protein first thing in the morning, your muscles have nothing to draw from for growth and recovery. This is especially daunting if you're trying to make gains in the gym. Without a hefty dose of complex carbs early in the day, your metabolism will go down the tubes and you simply won't have the energy your body needs to survive the day.

Quite possibly the best nutritional tip anyone could benefit from is to eat breakfast like a champion and make sure never to skip this first and most essential meal of the day. Here's a list of

Hotspots.LGBT | 71

8 of the top healthiest breakfast foods ever! They're loaded with nutrients, taste delicious, convenient, and damned easy to fix!

1. Almond butter on toast or an English muffin is a great source of protein and monounsaturated fats, making it an especially good choice for vegans who avoid eggs and dairy.

2. Bananas are quick and easy to eat, but they're also sodium free and packed full of potassium which helps to regulate blood pressure.

3. Berries and prunes are loaded with vitamin K, antioxidants, and plenty of fiber which helps to keep cholesterol levels in check and prevents the onset of type2 diabetes.

4. Eggs contain 13 essential nutrients including protein for strong muscles, vitamin B for a healthy metabolism, and choline which is great for improving memory.

5. Grapefruit is tasty and refreshing, and it's loaded with vitamin C to help boost your immune system.

6. Non-fat Greek yogurt has twice the amount of protein as regular yogurt, and you can eat it by itself or with berries, nuts, or any other breakfast food. 7. Oatmeal, provided you're not gluten intolerant, helps you reduce bad cholesterol levels, and it's full of potassium and omega-3 fatty acids.

8. Porridge is not just for Goldilocks and the 3 Bears! Quinoa porridge with almond milk (and maybe some nuts and berries, cinnamon and chopped apples) packs a dynamite protein punch, and at the same time it's a great option for vegans, vegetarians, and those who are avoiding gluten.
