And the filmmakers have hit upon a unique and truly valuable bit of promotional content. They'll be launching a four-part podcast, UnErased to coincide with Boy Erased's release. Author Garrard Conley, whose memoir forms the basis of the film, will participate in the podcast, which will focus on real stories of young people forced into the abusive programs, which have affected an estimated 800,000 people since their inception. UnErased will be made available exclusively to Stitcher Premium subscribers in the weeks before

the film's Nov. 2 release, and available everywhere podcasts are hosted coinciding with that release. There are already laws on the books in some states banning these programs for minors. Let's hope projects like this help turn the tide and protect queer youth in even more places.

Chloë Sevigny Is Still Drawn to Outsiders

'Lizzie' actress on why she'd turn down a trans role now, motivation for LGBTQ roles and legacy of Boys Don't Cry hloë Sevigny knows the power of words, so she's very careful with them, warily tiptoeing to the end of an answer when asked about the in luence of her seminal trans-landmark ilm Boys Don't Cry. The 1999 dramatization of the murder of real-life Nebraskan transgender teen Brandon Teena (Hilary Swank) garnered the 43-year-old indie queen and style icon, who played Teena's girlfriend, Lana Tisdel, an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Director Larry Clark's 1995 ilm Kids came irst, with Sevigny portraying an HIV-positive teen. But Sevigny would go on to amass a body of LGBTQ ilms and roles, including If These Walls Could Talk 2, Party Monster, Will & Grace and Broken Flowers, playing Jessica 46

Lange's lesbian assistant. In 2012, she portrayed trans contract killer Mia in the British miniseries Hit & Miss, a part she now says she'd pass on if it were offered to her today. (Actress Scarlett Johansson recently withdrew from playing a trans character in the forthcoming Rug & Tug after facing LGBTQ backlash.) Currently, Sevigny stars in and co-produces Lizzie, featuring the actress' irst lead role in her 50- ilm career. The thriller explores infamous 19th-century alleged murderous Lizzie Borden through a queer lens, which, according to this version, goes like this: Lizzie (Sevigny), to rebuke the patriarch who's getting in the way of her romantic pursuit of maid Bridget Sullivan (Kristen Stewart), slaughters her father and stepmother with an ax. And so, Sevigny can now add “real-life killer lesbian” to her abundantly gay resume.

What has led you to so many LGBTQ characters? The marginalized, the misunderstood, the outcast – you know, I grew up super sensitive as a child, and my brother and I were pretty rebellious in a small town and were really into just questioning the status quo. I have a lot of older peers who are gay and knowing the struggle and what they fought through, and having so much respect and admiration for the times that they've lived through – not that the struggle is over by any means, but just the perspective that I think gets lost. Post Trump,

with all the conversations that are being had, and everyone's like “oh god, it's so horrible; I can't watch the news,” but thank god everyone is talking about how political the systems are. I really feel like change is happening.

Why do you think you didn't experience the same backlash that Scarlett Johansson did for signing on to play a trans role? It was just a different time then. When they came to me with that role I said, “I don't understand why you don't cast a real trans person,” and they said, “We can't get the funding because we can't ind anyone that has a big enough name, in all honesty.” And I just felt like it was an important story to tell, and I loved the writing and I loved the creators and I wanted to be a part of it. If that opportunity came to me today, I would pass, for sure, 100 percent. It was

just, unfortunately, what was acceptable then. I think it wasn't as challenged, and it should be.

What are your thoughts on whether LGBTQ actors should exclusively be playing LGBTQ roles? And with that in mind, how did you approach Lizzie's sexuality? Well, I want to respect (the community) and their stories and who they are as people, and I feel like (Lizzie and Bridget's) love was born out of the con ines of the environment they were in at the time; they were looking

for escape in one another. I feel like it's kind of beyond the boundaries of queer, straight, you know? We had a good writer, we had lots of out cast members who really respected the story and wanted to be a part of telling it, and I admire them all for being out and for coming forward and supporting the project. I mean, I feel if gay men or women can play straight, I don't know (laughs) if it's fair to do the reverse. But I just hope that there's more opportunities, for everyone – especially the people who are marginalized. Did it mean something to you to have someone who is not heterosexual, Kristen Stewart, play Bridget, who is also not heterosexual? It… did. But she was also my irst choice just

Hotspots.LGBT | 47

as an actor, not the person. I have so much respect for her choices, and I could go on and on about her performances, but I like her persona. For me, I've always been attracted to directors or other actors that I feel like have more than just that going on – that aren't just, like, theater nerds (laughs). Not that there's anything wrong with theater nerds! But I feel like she really represents something to a lot of generations, with Twilight and beyond.

You've said what you had in mind for this ilm didn't align with director Craig William Macneill's inished feature. How about Lizzie and Bridget's sexuality – was that explored as deeply as you had hoped? I think when I said that I was more talking about the process because we had been through so many different incarnations of the script. Things were changing even until the last moment. It's the power of the edit, things you have to let go of. There was more between our relationship, kind of questioning it, and deciding she doesn't want to go any further and then coming back. And probably in the overall course of watching the movie it would've muddled things, so you kind of have to accept in the edits how things work and how some things don't, and that's just the process of ilming.

There's an intimate scene where Bridget and Lizzie almost kiss, but trepidation holds them back. How were you reading Lizzie in that moment? She was starved for recognition; she just wanted to be seen as she was and she felt really that she didn't have a voice, and I think she wasn't valued by her family or her community and she found somebody who valued her and could hear her and who wanted to listen to her and talk to her. There was so much physical attraction between them, but also just what that person was for her. She was on a quest for freedom, and she goes to the most extreme thing you can do and in the end kind of loses it all. As someone who's known for her queer roles, when you get stopped by an LGBTQ person on the street, which ilm do they tend to most recognize you from? Boys Don't Cry, for sure. They say every actor

has one thing that they get recognized or known for, and for me it's Kids, but from the gay community it's probably Boys Don't Cry. I think there are just a lot of reference for that movie and it meant a lot to a lot of people.

Next year marks 20 years since Boys Don't Cry. How do you re lect on the effect that movie had? Just like... I just think at that time when it came out there just wasn't a lot of representation of that community, on screen or on television or anywhere – oh my god. So sensitive around this subject. (Laughs) I'm always like, I'm gonna get take down for anything I say – it's just a hotbed. It feels like it's almost hard to talk about this without feeling under the gun, for some reason. Because it's like, you can't say the right thing. But I feel like it was important to the world. Not even one community in general. As far as building tolerance and acceptance and educating people and portraying a person and seeing the violence acted out against them and how heart-wrenching it is and humanizing a story, it was a really important thing to be a part of. I had read all the articles about Brandon Teena and was already obsessed with the story before being offered the audition and I wanted to be a part of telling that story. The City of Oakland Park has perfected the art of Oktoberfest. The event

organizers have learned what works when it comes to food, entertainment and activities and they have listened to attendees to add new features appealing to both adults and families. “Oakland Park's annual Oktoberfest celebration is known not only for dancing people, but dashing dachshunds as well,” says the City's Parks and Leisure Services Director Heidi Burnett who enjoys dressing up in her dirndl for the occasion. “Our sponsorship relationship with Funky Buddha has taken our beer selection and food choices to a level rarely experienced at community and cultural events.” The 14th Annual Oakland Park Oktoberfest takes place in the City's downtown Jaco Pastorius Park (4000 N. Dixie Highway) on Friday, October 5 (6 p.m. to 11 p.m.), Saturday, October 6 (1 p.m. to 11 p.m.) and Sunday, October 7 (1 p.m. to 7 p.m.). Presenting sponsor Funky Buddha – Oakland Park's nationally renowned craft brewery – is already brewing up a tasty array of German-inspired seasonal beers, including Floridian Hefeweizen (German wheat beer), Buddafest Marzen (a true German “festbier” brewed with Munich malts), Vibin' Groovable Lager, Hop Gun IPA, and the award-winning Last Snow Coconut & Coffee Porter. Besides the bevy of beverages, Oakland Park Oktoberfest offers some traditional Bavarian favorites with a new spin courtesy of the Funky Buddha Craft Food Counter whose chef has elevated grilled bratwurst to a savory taste experience by beer braising and serving with brewer's cabbage, ale mustard, and caramelized onions on a freshbaked poppy seed bun. Funky Buddha Marketing Director John Linn shared some of the other culinary delights on the menu. “Our chicken schnitzel features Florida Hefeweizen-marinated chicken cutlets pounded thin and served with ale mustard

and beer pickles,” Linn said. “The sauerbraten is a German-style pot roast marinated in our Hop Gun IPA, vinegar, and spices and served with roasted root vegetables and a traditional ginger-snap gravy.” Oakland Park's Oktoberfest offers ample opportunities to dance off the calories with a full schedule of entertainment under the giant tent complete with dance floor and the Munich-style long tables where friendships are easily made. Entertainment headliners include the San Antonio-based Alpine Express known both for their music and their audience participation antics. Master jodler, zither and accordion virtuoso Sepp Diepolder, as well as singers from Opera Fusion, are also on the bill. Traditionally attired Schuhplattler dancers will feature performances by both adult and children dance troupes. Oakland Park's popular Mayor and Broward League of Cities President Tim Lonergan is always among those gracing the dance floor in attired in traditional lederhosen. “Community events and cultural festivals add so much to the fabric of a community,” states Mayor Lonergan. “Oakland Park is proud to present a calendar of events that reflect our city's rich cultural and ethnic diversity.” In addition to the Dachshund Dash, Pet Supermarket will sponsor a Doggie Fashion Show (for dogs 25 pounds and under) at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Categories include Doggie Diva

(most fashionable), Twinning (owner & dog dress alike), and Oktoberfest Dog (best Oktoberfest costume). Pet Supermarket will award a prize in each category. Online application details can be found on the City's Oktoberfest page. Other Oktoberfest activities and contests include the beer barrel roll, beer stein races, and apple strudel eating contests. Culinary seminars include Beer and Cheese Pairings, Home Brewing, and Sausage Making. Children can enjoy the carnival area with their favorite fair foods, rides and games. A Kid's Corner will offer face painting, flower crowns, cookie decorating and other crafts. General admission to Oakland Park's Oktoberfest remains one of South Florida's best bargains at $5 with ages 12 and under admitted free with adults. Premium parking will be available in the immediate vicinity of the park and free parking nearby with complementary shuttle services. As with many Oakland Park events, a special drop-off and pick-up will be designated for ride share services such as Uber and Lyft.

LOL ... Adora: Sleeper, how did you wind being called 'Sleeper' ? ..You seem wide awake to me… Sleeper: I was given that name at THE DUMP, (as we called it), where I lived and worked after leaving home at age 15. They would throw parties sometimes and since I was the only one still in school. I'd have to go to sleep early so I could get up in the mornings. At that age kids mess around with you if you are the first to pass out, by like drawing on you, or sewing you to the couch. But if you are called Sleeper you are ok. Lol... Its not a very interesting story. It worked well for me though. Later on I adopted it as my artist name: It gave me the freedom to express myself more openly as Sleeper, to take risks in my art, especially in Performance at that age. It

was kind of tool to consciously engage in how I wanted to shape my life more freely. Teddy Behr: Tell a bit about yourself: what's important to you in your artistic practice and why? Sleeper: I'm an artist living in Miami. I primarily do sculpture, performance and installation work. I wound up in school arts programs since primary school. Miami was a pretty good place for me to come up; there were opportunities to learn about the arts and it seemed more or less ok to be LatinX Queer. My art and performance is directly connected to club and event performance; I've been told it's accessible and up-front, which makes sense to me… I suppose the way I've used electronics and

light are also related to club performance..same for super real or surreal imagery I'm told I make use of. Adora: So how did the 'Gender Blender' Party get started? Sleeper: I started working clubs from a very young age, it was mostly school during the week and bar and clubs on the weekends. I worked almost every position from busser to bar manager. During that time i got a sense of the different aspects of running events. It never really seemed like the type of thing I ever wanted to do, but it gave me an opportunity and eventually I decided to create something I felt Miami was missing; so with the help of some amazing people like Juleisy y Karla, Kesiah, Radskillz,

Zehno, (to name a few), and The Corner Bar staff, (where we originally started the 'Counter Corner' party, which preceded Gender Blender}…It's been a journey! Miami RAN with it… The people were already here, they just didn't have a place that was theirs. I am partners with Party Karloz and Neon Brown in Gender Blender. They had started the event event together and asked me early on to jump on board the Queer Punx night. I identified with their mission and was really happy to be a part of something else I felt Miami needed. We moved the party from Churchill's to Las Rosas, (2898Nw 7th Ave, Miami 33127), made it a free event, and the rest kind of snowballed into this magical night I look forward to every month. Teddy Behr: So more recently you've gotten involved in LGBTQ Youth Homelessness . How did that come about? Sleeper: Adrian Madriz who is the founder of SMASH, {Struggle for Miami's Affordable and Sustainable Housing}, a non profit that tackles issues surrounding gentrification, slumlords and homelessness, asked me if i was interested in teaming up with them for a fundraiser. SMASH has a project focusing on building an LGBTQ+ youth shelter and transitional facility.

(www.smash.miami/blog). I felt connected to the issue aside from all the alarming data Adrian presented me with. Through Counter Corner and Gender Blender we were able organize such an amazing event, raising over $12,000 in one night. It was overwhelming the amount of support the cause drew from the community: From the Drag performers donating their talents for the night, Lemon City Day School for housing us, to local bar GRAMPS donating the bar sales and catering the night, to THE STATE OF blessing us with their music, it was SO MUCH! It didn't just feel like a fundraiser, it felt like a display of how much love there is in the Queer community. There is so much starting up now in the scene, its an exciting time to be in Miami. Teddy Behr: Any recommendations for people who might want to get more involved in our community? Sleeper: There really is not much to it. Make time, and show up. Ask for help, help others. Collaborate or just talk to people and make friends, you will be surprised how friendly these Miami Queers can be. Half the battle is just being present honestly, support the community and those hard working drag performers damnit! LOL…

BRETT KAVANAUGH

W

ell, gay sex was decriminalized in India, so that's great news. For those of you saying, “Well it's about TIME, India!” I'd like to remind you that the U.S. didn't decriminalize gay sex until 2003 (Lawrence v. Texas, holla!). We're also still arguing about whether women can be in charge of their own bodies and if black people's lives actually matter. So, don't give the U.S. too much credit here. Especially not while we're staring down the possibility of Brett Kavanaugh becoming a Supreme Court Justice. That we allowed Donald Trump, a man who should never in a million years have been trusted at the helm of this country, the chance to reshape not only our Supreme Court but the entire federal court system IS NOT A GOOD LOOK, AMERICA. YET HERE WE ARE. And yes, I'm yelling. As the Human Rights Campaign puts it, “Brett Kavanaugh poses a direct threat to LGBTQ equality, reproductive rights, affordable health care, immigrants' rights, workers' rights and so much more.” This was made clear when Kavanaugh was asked by President (whoops, I mean Senator but President sure sounds good) Kamala Harris if the Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized marriage equality, was decided correctly. Kavanaugh refused to give a straight (no pun intended) answer. “I'm asking you a very specific question. Either you're willing to answer it or you're not,” Harris said. He was not willing. “Brett Kavanaugh's refusal to answer very basic, very direct questions about the Supreme Court's historic ruling bringing marriage

equality nationwide is alarming and completely unacceptable,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “The Obergefell decision is settled law. If this nominee cannot so much as affirm that or the fundamental equality of LGBTQ people and our families, he should not and must not be granted a lifetime appointment to our nation's highest court.” And yet it's pretty likely that he will. Trump's Supreme Court list was made by the extremist anti-LGBTQ group the Federalist Society, after all. We've seen the kinds of lawyers Trump surrounds himself with. It's clear he's not picking these guys himself. A willingness, even an eagerness, to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, maybe even Lawrence, is absolutely required. Oh, and Roe v. Wade, too. It's been the goal of the extremist right from the moment the case was decided to overturn it. To criminalize abortion all over again. To have women who are desperate to terminate pregnancies do it by any means necessary. I mean for Chrisssake we've all seen “Dirty Dancing!” Put simply, Trump is their best shot. That's why he can screw all of the porn actresses he wants. That is why he can cheat on all of his wives. That is why he can have so many marriages and divorces. That is why he can brag about grabbing women by the pussy. That is why he can shrug off multiple accusations of sexual harassment and assault. That is why this utterly immoral piece of garbage we call President has the complete and unwavering support of the socalled Moral Majority. For straight folks or younger LGBTQ folks, marriage equality (which has translated into

Hotspots.LGBT | 65

Trump's Supreme Court list was made by the extremist anti-LGBTQ group the Federalist Society, after all. broader equality for LGBTQ people overall) is “settled law.” Meaning the fight is over with & done, and the law is permanent, forever and ever amen. But that's not how laws work. Which can be both good and bad. But in this case, it's bad. I'm 40 years old. I didn't think I would see marriage equality in my lifetime. But when the Supreme Court came through, man did they come through. And yet. “There are already cases across the country where our opponents are working to undermine the Obergefell decision and the recognition of that decision,” Griffin told Variety. “There are also cases rising to the court that relate to existing federal law and the question of if current federal law protects people on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. These are all things that are headed to this court, and

sooner rather than later. There is significant reason to believe … that he is on the wrong side of all of these issues.” Call your senators. Call senators who are supposedly undecided, too. But most importantly, vote in November. Vote for Democrats, however imperfect, because they're literally our only defense. I'm not willing to go back to when my wife and son were legally just random people I shared a home with. If you're privileged enough to not worry about which party is in charge, at least have the decency to vote to protect families that hang in the balance.

Always make time for things that are important to you

HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti

Want Superior Workouts in Less Time? You Bet!

F

ace it. Your life is getting busier with each passing day. Certainly, keeping fit and looking fine are top priorities, but do you really have the energy and the time it takes to stay fit? Here are several methods guaranteed to help you tackle better workouts and achieve superior results in less than half the time. Compound exercises combine two or more exercises, allowing you to train two or more muscle groups at a time. When you think about it, this is how you move in real life, using several different muscle groups at once to perform tasks and get work done. Compound exercises make you work harder, burn more calories, recruit more muscle fibers, and stimulate the release of muscle building hormones like testosterone and human growth hormone.

How do you perform compound exercises? Think of this concept as creative multi-tasking in the gym. Double up alternating dumbbell biceps

Hotspots.LGBT | 75

curls as you perform lunges across the gym to execute a perfect compound set for upper and lower body. Perform dumbbell military presses and side raises as you sit upon a stability ball, thereby working deltoids and core at once. The possibilities are limitless!

Free weights rule when it comes to getting more bang for your buck in less time. Machines are very specialized and you've got to move from one machine to another as you work one muscle group at a time. You waste time standing in line, and when they break down, you're at a loss as to what to do instead. Free weights – barbells, dumbbells, kettle bells – allow you to develop power, strength and endurance as they activate more muscle fibers and force you to work harder.

So, how do you move away from machines and more toward free weights? Step away from the pec deck and sculpt your chest with

dumbbell flies reclining on a flat bench. Rather than performing overhead military presses at a universal machine, recruit a pair of dumbbells and perform seated or standing presses. Remember, for every gym machine there are at least a half dozen equivalent free weight exercises you can do instead. Circuit training combines cardio with weight training to help you build muscle and burn fat at the same time. Moving rapidly from station to station, with little rest between exercises allows you to get more work done (both aerobic and anaerobic) in less time. How do you circuit train? Provided you have the space and say, 35 minutes, set up your stations and move quickly. Perform 25 jumping jacks; grab 2 dumbbells for three sets of 15-20 squats; hit the mat for 75 crunches; jump on the treadmill for 5 minutes; intersperse 3 sets of barbell flat bench presses with 3 sets of push-ups; stretch for a minute; pump out 3 sets of alternating dumbbell curls and superset with 3 sets of triceps cable pushdowns.

HOT ADVICE By Andreus Quinones

Silent Partners Dear Andreus, My boyfriend seems to be bored with me. We go out and he is so happy to see everyone else, then when we leave, it's like he doesn't even want to talk. Our sex life has diminished as well. What do I do? Sincerely, Lonely Boyfriend Dear Lonely Boyfriend, It seems like communication is the problem. As dif icult and as painful as it may be, you are going to have to ind a way to talk. Clearly something has changed in the dynamic of your relationship. The only way to ind that out is to ask questions. There are key factors in this type of situation, such as; (1) the amount of time you spend together, (2) do you share common interest (3) do you want and/or expect the same things from your relationship. In essence, it sounds as if maybe your boyfriend is bored, or is looking for something more. Find out what is lacking, and try to address those things with an open mind. The mistake that most people make in relationship is complacency. They get too comfortable, and someone gets bored. You should treat your boyfriend/partner as if every day is your irst date. Spontaneity is everything!!

110 | Hotspots.LGBT

Dear Andreus, I have been with the same guy for 3 years now. He wants to get married, but is upset that I have not told my parents about us. I am not exactly out to them. How should l handle this? Sincerely, Confused Dear Confused, I wish I could give you an easy answer. There are many factors at play here. But honestly, if you love him and you are willing to commit your life to him, what is holding you back from telling your family? This man desires to be a permanent ixture in your life, and wants to be completely open about it. Can you blame him? Marriage is something to celebrate for most, and something that most people want to share with their family and their friends. What you now have to decide is how important he is to you. If you cannot tell your family out of fear of disapproval or rejection, then you must ask yourself who is worth losing. Everyone will never be happy about the decisions you make in your life, but ultimately it is your life, and your happiness is paramount. If your family truly loves you, they may not approve, but they will accept.
