We have been hearing about the remake for about a year and then when I heard who the stars were I got even more excited. Unless you are living under a rock, you know “A Star is Born,” stars fourtime Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (“American Sniper,” “American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook”) and multiple award-winning, Oscarnominated music superstar Lady Gaga, in her first leading role in a major motion picture. Cooper

helms the film, marking his directorial debut. In this new take on the tragic love story, he plays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers—and falls in love with—struggling artist Ally (Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer… until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally's career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons. The Film is rated R and opens on Friday, October 5, which is the day I will see it!

deep inside HOLLYWOOD By Romeo San Vicente

Sugarbaker & Associates back in business at ABC

Heidi and Tim deliver a lot of look Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn are taking their act on the road. Amazon, in its quest to take over every last inch of Earth that isn't already nailed down, has made a deal with the Project Runway mainstays to develop a new reality fashion “...the Emmy-nominated

PR pair are jumping ship and moving into the realm of global reach.” series, one that will premiere in over 200 countries and territories. There are zero details available right now 30 | Hotspots.LGBT

regarding content, but it means that the Emmynominated PR pair are jumping ship (and if you aren't a diehard fan, be real: did you even realize it was still on television?) and moving into the realm of global reach. Amazon is using vague signifiers like “narrative” and “fresh” to describe the project we aren't allowed to know about, and they're referring to something called a “shoppable experience” for the viewing audience. Frankly, we don't care about any of that stuff; we love Tim and Heidi and we want them to be able to invent a new thing that will bring us back into the fold.

Designing Women might be happening all over again. ABC has confirmed a “script commitment” with creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, which isn't the same thing as a series order, but it's good enough for us to get overly excited about. If you weren't in the '80s you should know that this show was about four women at an Atlanta interior design firm who hung out a lot and made jokes about social issues and the out of control shoulder pads were a moral universe unto themselves and these women were, in a word, amazing. If there was any rivalry with the equally amazing Golden Girls we never paid attention to it and now, goddess willing, we're going to have Sugarbaker: The Next Generation. No cast yet, no details at all, just the shining golden hope of television that

comforts and makes conservative men irrationally enraged. Fingers crossed for a chance to revisit the classic “night the lights went out in Georgia” monologue. Romeo San Vicente is always happy when Hollywood Actors come out!

Keira Knightley Werks the Queer Narrative

‘Colette' actress on playing bisexual author Colette, making a lesbian sequel to Bend It Like Beckham and her drag-inspired Sugar Plum Fairy

Y

ou know what's to love, actually? How Keira Knightley has now played enough feminist roles to know her character, Juliet, in the bubbly holiday classic Love Actually doesn't exactly fall into that category. In the Christmas rom-com, Juliet is the object of not one but two men's desire, and copious close-up shots insist on telling us what we've already known: Keira Knightley is breathtakingly beautiful. The 33-year-old actress was just 17 when 2003's Love Actually was ilmed. Since then, Knightley's genre-spanning roles throughout her 23-year career have often positioned her as a heroine in girl-power period ilms, women characterized by their liberated state of mind (2008's The Duchess) and patriarchal-defying

genius (2014's The Imitation Game, as Alan Turing's mathematician- iancé e Joan Clarke). Real-life bisexual novelist SidonieGabrielle Colette, who ghost wrote for author-husband Henry Gauthier-Villars (known as “Willy” and played by Dominic West) until she reclaimed her autonomy and byline, is right within Knightley's wheelhouse of women smearing their male oppressors. Take Colette, whose 1944 book Gigi was adapted into a movie musical that won nine Oscars in 1959, including best picture. Written and directed by out director and fellow Englander Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice), Colette is a tribute to his late husband and collaborator, Richard Glatzer, who died

from the progressive neurodegenerative disease ALS. In the hospital before he passed away in 2015, Glatzer, who could not speak, typed “C-O-L-E-T-T-E” to Westmoreland on an iPad to communicate that his – but in many ways, their – next project should be “Colette.” Recently, Knightley called to talk about her special connection to gay directors such as Westmoreland (and James Kent, who directs her in the forthcoming The Aftermath), her enthusiastic response to a Bend It Like Beckham sequel where best friends Jules and Jesse are lesbian lovers, and her desperate plea to drag queens.

You're so good in this I wouldn't be mad if all you do is play period bisexuals for the rest of your career. Well, thank you very much! I'll quote you on that.

Is there a special relationship between gay directors and female actors such as yourself that helps in telling a story like this one? That's an interesting question! Yes, I think so. I

think that there's that quality of having to ight for your space and ight for your right to be who you feel you are and ight for your voice.

So yes, I think there's a similarity in those two aspects, and one I think, probably, Wash identi ied with in the story of Colette.

When it comes to the male gaze, is there a difference in having a gay director direct a sex scene? Yes and no. He did actually turn around when I think it was me and Eleanor (Tomlinson, who portrays bisexual American heiress Georgie Raoul-Duval) and he was like, “You know, it's really great 'cause there's no male gaze here,” and I'm like, “Wash, there are only men in this room!” (Laughs) He's like, “Yes, no – you know what I mean!” (Laughs) So yes, because sex is sort of taken out of it in a way, because obviously he doesn't ind me attractive, and that's great (laughs). But I still think male sexuality in all of its forms is probably slightly different from female sexuality, so there are probably still subtle differences. But it is very nice to know that when I took my clothes off he didn't get off on it at all.

Are there any other ilms you've worked on where you felt having a gay director helped in doing the story justice? Yes. I worked with… oh my god… my brain's just literally gone blank and I've forgotten every single other person's name that I've ever

No, luckily. I feel very fortunate in that, 'cause that would be tricky!

Rumor has it that Bend It Like Beckham was originally written as a lesbian love story? I never read that version of the script! I mean, not as far as I know. But you might have information that I don't have. No, the only version of the script that I ever read was the one that we shot, so it was as it was.

The Phantom of the Opera

Returns to The Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Cameron Mackintosh's spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera is ready for its triumphant return to Fort Lauderdale engagement at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts. With newly reinvented staging and stunning scenic design, this new version of Phantom is performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making this one of the largest productions on tour in North America.

Andrew Lloyd Webber said, “Having received great critical acclaim in the U.K. and North America, I am really pleased that Laurence Connor's new production of Phantom will continue to tour the U.S. playing in tandem with the Broadway production which just celebrated 30 years at the Majestic Theatre.”

Cameron Mackintosh said, “With Phantom still the reigning champion as the longest-running production on Broadway after 30 phenomenal years, with no end in sight, I'm delighted that this spectacular new production of Phantom has been as well-received in the U.S. as the brilliant original

and has already been seen by over 3.7 million people across North America since it opened in November 2013. With an exciting new design and staging, retaining Maria Bjö rnson's amazing costumes, the new PHANTOM is thrilling audiences and critics alike all over again. With the production continuing to be such a success, we are delighted to welcome our exciting new stars to keep the music of the night soaring for many years to come.”

Was Opera always part of your repertoire or when did that happen? My grandmother was a professional opera singer, and always tried to convince me to sing opera, but I resisted. However, when I was 15 I started at the Vancouver Opera Children's Chorus, and there is where I , fell in love with it.

When did you know performing would be your career? I think I always wanted it to be. However, halfway through university it hit me that performing was going to be my life.

production is overseen by Matthew Bourne and Cameron Mackintosh. The Phantom Of The Opera: music by Andrew Lloyd Webber; lyrics by Charles Hart (with additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe); book by Richard Stilgoe and Andrew Lloyd Webber; orchestrations by David Cullen and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Based on the classic novel Le Fantôme de L'Opéra by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a masked igure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Eva Tavares who plays the lead role of Christine Daaé for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

Photos: Matthew Murphy

Were you always a performer even as a child? I started dancing when I was about 2 ½ and moved into singing when I was in High school. But yes, I was always on stage in some way.

What was your irst professional gig? When I was in university, my friend from high school and I got back tracks from Jazz standards and were hired to sing as a Farmers Market. We got paid a little, but the tips were amazing.

Other than Christine, what has been your favorite role, and why? Maria in West Side Story. She is such an amazing woman and she goes through a tremendous journey in that show. That show forces the cast to become really close really quickly. It creates a family dynamic and creates very important messages for the audience. What is your fantasy role? I would love to do Clara in Light in the Poazza, as she is a complex character and her story is so unusual.

What should the Florida audiences expect from this production of Phantom of the Opera? This production is an amped up version of everything you know and love of Phantom. We have so many extras: more ire, different sets, and special effects. However, the things you know and love about Phantom are still there. Even my straight brother who generally dislikes shows, liked this show!

FINANCIALS The Frivolist: 7 Tips for Navigating Income Disparity in Your New-ish Relationship

Discuss the situation and expectations Don't avoid having a conversation about where each partner stands financially. Pretending that the issue doesn't exist can lead to resentment. Sit down and talk about how much each of you makes, your savings plan and ultimate financial goals. Discuss how you'll handle the everyday expenses, too. Perhaps your partner makes enough that he or she doesn't mind taking on more than you. Maybe you have enough in savings already to contribute equally for the time being. Whatever you decide, make sure that the communication is open and honest and all expectations are clear from the get-go.

When you're in a relationship, one partner is bound to make more money than the other. Depending on how wide that financial gap, the person with the smaller paycheck can sometimes feel inadequate (whether it's justified or not), and the insecurity of earning less may cause problems. There are, however, ways to facilitate healthy discussions about uneven financial affairs that lead to satisfying results for both parties. These seven tips will help facilitate feelings of worthiness and appreciation among partners – even if somebody's boss is being stingy.

Do the math How much difference is there between your two incomes? Does your partner make twice as much as you do? A fair way to divvy up expenses is to base how much each person is required to pay for monthly expenses on how much each person earns in a month. If your partner makes double what you do, it's a reasonable compromise that they will pay twice as much in rent (or somewhere thereabouts). The discrepancies between salaries should be accommodated at bill time somewhat accordingly.

2

“Holidays can be hard for the financially strapped, so the best way to avoid hurt feelings and disappointment is Contribute to a joint recreational account Many partners who earn less feel guilty that they can't pay for as much during recreational outings or vacation. To ensure that both partners feel like they're contributing equally to these activities, consider establishing a joint account. Decide how much you can afford to put in the account on a regular basis – based on the lowest earner's ability to contribute – and start building up the slush fund. When it's time to use it, both partners can feel that they each worked equally as hard to enjoy that time together. I don't, however, recommend combining all your income into one account. Each partner should maintain their own financial independence in some aspects so the waters don't get too muddy in this regard.

3

Hotspots.LGBT | 49

Thinks of ways to have free or inexpensive fun together If money is particularly tight and saving for entertainment isn't feasible, research low- or no-cost activities in your area. There are an abundance of activities that don't cost a dime, like free outdoor movies, bike and kayak rentals, and admission to museums and exhibits, plus plenty of nature-bound DIY fitness activities – all free if you look hard enough. If no one has to put anything out of pocket, no one will feel guilty that one paid more than the other. Another perk: a free activity this time means that you saved even more money for next time.

4

“A fair way to divvy up expenses is to base how much each person is required to pay for monthly expenses on how much each person earns in a month.”

Consider alternative ways of making cash It's a harsh reality, but some careers don't pay much. If you're a teacher and your partner is a Wall Street broker, chances are you'll never earn as much as them. That's OK. But just because your salary is capped doesn't mean your creativity has to be. Maybe you're good at crocheting knit caps that you can sell on Etsy, or perhaps you're a talented graphic designer who can provide freelance services. There are a million ways to make extra money outside of a nine-to-five when you embrace your own motivation.

50

| Hotspots.LGBT

Set limits at gifting times Holidays can be hard for the financially strapped, so the best way to avoid hurt feelings and disappointment is to set a limit (again, based on what the lower earner can afford) for how much money will be spent. This isn't difficult to do. As we get older we tend to want less at holiday time anyway (probably because we buy ourselves presents all year round, but that's another issue), and it's the thought of the gift that ultimately counts. A limit also helps ensure that the lower earner doesn't overspend, which could push him or her into deeper – even if perceived – debt.

6

“Each partner should maintain their own financial independence in some aspects so the waters don't get too muddy in this regard.” If your partner pays more, do more If you're the lower earner and your partner is willing to take on more of the monthly expenses than you – no questions asked – show your appreciation by doing more of the household chores. Wash the dishes, take out the trash, and make dinner more frequently than he or she does. You're not getting paid to take on these tasks, per se, but in the real world those chores are considered work for some (people make a living from it) so it's OK to assign monetary value to the extra time and effort you're putting in. Taking on more of the households chores when he or she is taking on more of the expenses also is an excellent way to show your thanks in small, thoughtful and inexpensive ways.

BRETT KAVANAUGH

I

t seems like it was only one week ago that I was writing about how Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was a nightmare for LGBTQ people. That's because it was last week. And now we find that he is a nightmare for women, too. Who would have thought? Besides anyone who pays even a fleeting bit of attention to the contemptuous way Republicans treat women, of course. Christine Blasey Ford has bravely come forward to accuse Kavanaugh of attempted rape while they were in high school. Yep, that's right. High school. Which was a long time ago for them. But so what? Conservatives have been tying themselves in knots arguing, essentially, that what happens in high school stays in high school, especially if what happened in high school was their pet SCOTUS nominee getting drunk, pushing a girl onto a bed, trying to take off her clothes and covering her mouth with his hand when she tried to scream. This behavior, many would like you to believe, is just “boys being boys.” Which is bullshit. And then, of course, there are people saying that Ford is a lying liar, including Kavanaugh himself. Which just shows you how little so many men understand about sexual assault and how our society treats accusers. As Candance Owens of Turning Point USA put it on Twitter, “Brett Kavanaugh should be confirmed IMMEDIATELY. It is time for Americans to send a STRONG message to the anarchist Democrats that we will no longer tolerate their disgusting, corrupt, low-bar

OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI

antics. The #MeTooWitchhunt needs to come to an END once and for all.” And I agree! The #MeToo thing should totally come to an end. But, spoiler alert, it can only end when MEN CHOOSE TO STOP SEXUALLY HARASSING AND ASSAULTING WOMEN. Until then, women must keep coming forward to try to stop it. They will, of course, be accused of being liars, like Ford has, even though it is a huge risk to come forward. As @OhNoSheTwitnt, the Best Tweeter on the Tweeternet, put it: “Hello, I am an opportunistic woman. I make up decades old sexual assault accusations against rich and powerful men because my lifelong dream is to get death threats from strangers calling me a lying whore.” And as she points out: yeah, that's as ridiculous as it sounds. So Ford is lying and/or Kavanaugh was just putting “locker room talk” into practice. Republicans are hot to confirm Kavanaugh as fast as possible so that the court can finally repeal Roe v. Wade and Republicans can prove once and for all how much they hate women. But Ford's accusation is credible. And we need to take a step back and ask ourselves how in the hell we got to this place. And we don't have to look very far. We've seen this story played out over and over. One popular fable is of the Supreme Court nominee who is accused of sexual harassment and yet the Senate essentially puts his accuser on trial and he's confirmed anyway and is STILL ON THE BENCH TODAY MAKING DECISIONS THAT IMPACT EVERY

Republicans are hot to confirm Kavanaugh as fast as possible so that the court can finally repeal Roe v. Wade and Republicans can prove once and for all how much they hate women. AMERICAN WOMAN'S LIFE. Then there's the made-for-TV movie about the powerful man who is accused of sexual assault by over a dozen women, calls them all liars after bragging about grabbing women “by the pussy” and becomes President of the U.S. Trump is, of course, very concerned about Ford's allegations and is taking the matter very seriously. Just kidding. He merely sees it as a little bump in the road. “If it takes a little delay, it'll take a little delay,” Trump said. “It will, I'm sure, work out very well.” And who knows? Maybe it will. There are a lot of people fighting like hell against this nomination. Which is heartening.

But I keep thinking of the one person who could have stopped this whole mess before it started. If more American men respected women we would have a President Hillary Clinton nominating Michelle Obama to the Supreme Court right now. I don't know, y'all, it's almost like steeping American boys in a mixture of rape culture and toxic masculinity has been bad for, well, everybody. HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti

Stop Wasting Your Time With These Useless Exercises!

H

itting the gym is a necessary part of staying fit and healthy. It's also the only real fountain of youth available to those of us who want to stay vibrant and attractive for as long as possible. For all these reasons and more it is important not to waste time or spin your wheels when you are working out. Certain commonly used exercises and practices are ineffective and just plain unsafe. Here is my list of some time- consuming mistakes and useless exercises to avoid in the gym. Jerking heavy weights on the leg extension machine with the intention of blasting your quadriceps (the muscles on the front of your thighs) is a recipe for serious knee injuries. Besides straining the cruciate knee ligaments and causing damage to the meniscus, this exercise can

over -develop your quads causing your hamstrings (the muscles on the backs of your thighs) to become excessively tight and inflexible.

Hotspots.LGBT | 71

Tight hams in turn can cause low back pain and contribute to injuries. Avoid all this lower body “drama by sticking with squats, presses, and lunges. Any exercise that involves pushing or pulling a bar that's positioned behind the neck can damage the rotator cuff

muscles that attach your humerus (arm) to your scapula (shoulder). Once you strain or sprain these muscles you are in for a lifetime of shoulder pain and maybe even a permanent disability. When you do wide grip lat pull downs or barbell or dumbbell shoulder military presses, sit up straight, point your chest outward and pull or press the weight in front of you. Doing cardio can be a boring waste of time especially if you set your cardio machine too slow every workout. Varying your pace and intensity during your hour or so of cardio is a more successful fat loss strategy. The best way to burn calories is by mixing fast and slow speeds. This is also

the best way to address the body's different energy systems and muscle groups. Sit-ups are as useless and ineffective as the high school physical education teacher who bulleyed you all throughout your sophomore year. Locking your feet under a rack or bench and rolling up on your lower back as you pull on your 7 cervical vertebrae will only give you a sore back and stiff neck. Instead, do crunches. Keep your feet flat on the floor or slightly elevate your legs over an exercise ball to stabilize your hips. Extend your arms and crunch your torso bringing your elbows to your knees. You can feel the burning in your abs already! When you go to the gym, your main goal is to lift weights, so for cryin' out loud use a weight that's heavy enough so that your muscles feel worked by the end of a set of 8-12 reps. Pyramid your weights up with each set, but be careful to maintain good form with each rep. For more tips on how to maximize your time in the gym, contact TrainerTomB@aol.com. HOT ADVICE By Andreus Quinones

Bad Romance Dear Andreus, I met this guy online on one of the dating sites. I was living in Seattle, and honestly wanted a change of scenery. For months we were talking, and really hit it off. He asked me to move to Fort Lauderdale to be with him, in hopes of having something really amazing. I packed up my things and came down. Everything started out great, and now he tells me that he feels as if things were rushed, and that I should start looking for a place. What should I do? Sincerely, Lost in South Florida Dear Lost in South Florida, Okay, let's get to the point here. First, WHY?? Why would you move to South Florida to be with someone that you had never met in person? Not only did you move, but you moved clear across the country. C'mon, I am sure you have to admit that was a bit juvenile. I completely agree with him for feeling as if things were rushed. I am sure that he asked you to come here because of the feelings you may have developed through your longdistance communication. Going from talking online, to moving is a MAJOR step. You cannot fault him for this. Put on your big boy pants, take responsibility, and move on. Decide whether you want to stay here or go. If so, secure a job, ind yourself a place, and get out there. Meet people and focus on yourself. And please, the next time this happens, don't make any sudden moves! Dear Andreus, I have the worst taste in men, or should I say bad luck. Every time I invest in someone

it doesn't work. I am so tired of trying. I meet these beautiful guys, and they always suck the life out of me. They want money, or a place to live, or drugs or something else. I don't know what to do. I am starting to feel like there is something wrong with me. Why can't I get it right? I want to have a relationship so badly. Where is my happily ever after. Sincerely, Heartbroken Dear Heartbroken, Let's start at the beginning. First of all, desperation is not attractive. We can sometimes project that without even realizing it. Maybe you wanting to have a relationship so badly shows, and is causing you to attract the wrong people. You must look within to ind out what your insecurities are, and address them. Next, it seems as if you are attracting needy people, which means that your behavior is showing something that attracts that type of person. You want a relationship, so you entertain them, while they get what they want. This is what we call “co-dependent behavior.” Don't worry, it's not the end of the world, and you can still have your “happily ever after.” Get to know yourself irst, work on your laws and your strengths. When you are out there meeting people, be con ident. Be brave, be bold and don't settle for anything less than you deserve. It is up to you to set the standard. You are not Goodwill or Salvation Army. Stop giving so much, unless it is reciprocated. The only exception is if you are going to claim them as a dependent on your taxes!!
