Jim Parsons Makes Room at The Inn

Broadway needs Taylor Mac. Broadway gets Taylor Mac. Andrea Martin, entertainment's longstanding MVP for several decades now, is going back to Broadway, accompanied by Nathan Lane, who is no slouch himself. The pair will star in Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus, by Taylor Mac is the creator and star of one of the most buzzed-about American cultural events in recent memory...

Mac. Who is Taylor Mac, you ask, and why is there someone named Gary associated with Titus Andronicus? Well, Taylor Mac is an artist (one who uses "judy," lowercase sic, as a gender pronoun) and one of

32 | Hotspots.LGBT

theater's most innovative voices. Mac is the creator and star of one of the most buzzed-about American cultural events in recent memory, A 24-Decade History of Popular Music, the author of the acclaimed play, Hir, and a MacArthur Fellow, speaking of no slouches. Gary is Mac's Broadway debut, and it is what the title suggests, a comic sequel to Titus Andronicus in which Lane and Martin are servants who have to clean up the carnage in the aftermath of war. We hate to jinx by getting too revved up, but this has all the signs – rising creator on a roll meets comedy legends – of being something very special, and we're just going to hand it all the Tony Awards now.

In 1999, The New Yorker published “The Inn Crowd,” an article by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tony Horwitz detailing the controversy surrounding the Inn at Little Washington in Rappahannock County, Virginia. The residents of the area were split over whether or not to be decent human beings and welcome a gay couple and their business, or be stereotypical rednecks and run them out of town. Two decades later, that slice of American life is in the process of becoming a sitcom produced by Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons, Young & Hungry creator David Holden, and producing partner Todd Spiewak. The series is in development at NBC, and though no cast has been officially announced, it's assumed that Parsons will star. We're also assuming that in 2018 the homophobia will be made somewhat more adorable and easily turned to sweetness

PARSONS by the end of about the fifth episode, and we're totally fine with that. Create the world you want to see and all that.

Romeo San Vicente self-created world looks a lot like Folsom Street Fair

Love and Understanding: A Conversation with Cher

Icon talks 'hope' gleaned from the LGBTQ community, 'breadcrumbs' of her legacy and that time she jumped out a window her is so low-key about being Cher that calling her is like calling your mom. “Hi,” she purrs with signature simplicity when I phone her presidential suite. We are speaking matter-of-factly about gay things, political things, Twitter things (“I'm inished with the emojis that we have”). About going to Walgreens and trying to remember why she went to Walgreens. This seems so very … normal? Certainly, Cher is the most multi of multihyphenates – iery human rights activist,

Auto-Tune pioneer, a unicorn, the Phoenix – but no, not at all normal. Not from down here, where we've basked in the long-reigning diva's treasure trove of ilm and music and bedazzled Bob Mackie costumes, and admired her ability to get down, do a ive-minute plank (seriously), and somehow get back up again. That motion is the time-tested motion of Cher's enduring six-decade career. It's where grit meets guts meets glitter. Our Oz, our Wonderland; a safe, shimmering space providing escapist refuge since the 1960s, a span which has seen Sonny (Bono, her

late ex-husband) and Cher, anthemic rock and gay dance, inventions and reinventions – Cher's mere existence brought us closer to those within our own community, and closer to ourselves. She has three Golden Globes, a Best Actress Oscar (for Moonstruck), a Grammy (for “Believe”) and an Emmy (for Cher: The Farewell Tour), and in December, she'll be the recipient of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor for her indelible contributions to culture. But Cher's superheroine, Hollywoodroyalty sheen isn't without genuine normalperson realness. Unlike “Believe,” there is nothing arti icially manufactured about Cher's no-nonsense, everywoman, Walgreens-shopper persona. Because even when her sequins glisten like a galaxy of stars

on a lit Vegas stage, when she's loating high above you in majestic-goddess fashion, and when she's still wearing a variation of her “If I Could Turn Back Time” music video one-piece at her current age of 72, Cher does the least pop icon thing a pop icon can do: remind you she's still living in your world. In July, she did her gay-icon due diligence by helicoptering onto the set of Mamma Mia 2! Here We Go Again to play the role she'd been playing in front of the world, most discernibly to generations of baby-gays and grown-up gays: maternal pillar. When I met Cher in 2016 on Halloween at a fundraiser stop for Hillary Clinton in the suburbs of Michigan, I was struck by her Cher-ness, the glitzy legend momentarily eclipsed by her warm, inviting humanness. Armed with a cannon of glittery ABBA bops, Cher has come to our rescue once again with an ode to the Swedish discopop supergroup titled – what else? – Dancing Queen, her 26th album and irst since 2013's Closer to the Truth. In December, The Cher Show, the musical about her life, which she is coproducing, of icially opens on Broadway. And next year, because she just can't help herself, she will embark on a tour appropriately titled Here We Go Again. The night we spoke, Cher was laidback, re lective and full of hearty chuckles as she talked about that Walgreens detour, kissing Silkwood costar Meryl Streep, the wedding dress she'd wear to Trump's impeachment party, the “breadcrumbs” of her legacy, Twitter, the devil, jumping out of a window – and not only her long-standing in luence on the LGBTQ community, but our in luence on her.

Cher, I have a story you probably haven't thought about in some time: its 2016, you're at a Walgreens in Flint, Michigan, on Halloween. You were there campaigning for Hillary and some Walgreens shopper told you they loved your Cher costume. Yes! Oh my god! Wasn't that, like, the weirdest experience at the Walgreens?! You tell me. I wasn't there!

Hotspots.LGBT | 41

Right? And in Flint! Well, probably not often. Ha! But you know, the minute I start talking, they pretty much know it's me.

You're hard on yourself when it comes to your music. Are you happy with Dancing Queen? I think I did a good job. Now whether people are gonna like it…

Less studio drama than that time you stormed out on producer Mark Taylor after recording “Believe”? Well... yes. Haha! But I have to tell you something: These songs are not easy. You'd think, “Oh, they're pop-y and Bjö rn (Ulvaeus) and Benny (Andersson) and the girls start to get into them,” and they're not. No more Mr. Nice Guy! They're rough songs. And they're much more intricate than I thought, but I had a great time. Some of them are easier, and some of them have some rough spots.

Are you frequently mistaken for a Cher impersonator? Because, I mean, how often would the real Cher be at a Walgreens?

42

| Hotspots.LGBT

Thankfully, Dancing Queen is a slice of gay heaven in hell. Well, look, I wasn't doing it for that, but I'm happy if it can make people happier than they were before they heard it. When were you irst aware that the LGBTQ

Photos by: Machado Cicala

Haha! I needed to go into the Walgreens for something. Or: I had a moment to breathe ... I don't know. I went into Walgreens and I was looking for something, and then the girls who were helping me realized it was me, and then there was a whole kind of hubbub thing and all these little trick-or-treaters came in as I was leaving. So they were all outside and I piled them into the limousine and we were hanging out in there. I mean, I was supposed to be going to a whole bunch of fundraisers – I ended up making them, of course – and I was busy playing with the kids.

You could've easily found enough inspiration in the world's current plight for another album like your 2000 indie album Not Commercial, which was dark. But we don't need that right now! We need ABBA right now! If anything, we need to not be brought down because everything is so terrible. I was just talking to this one boy who came in and he was asking me what did I really think and I said, “Babe, I think the picture's bleak. I think everyone's gotta vote.”

community identi ied you as a gay icon? I don't think I was when I was with Sonny. I think it happened on The Sonny and Cher Show (which ran from 1976-1977), somehow. I don't know – I don't know how that happens. I mean, how does it happen? I have no idea! It's just like, we made a pact and we're a group and that's it.

Photos by: Machado Cicala

But you were seeing more of the LGBTQ community come out at some point? There was a switch? Yeah, there was a change, there was de initely a change. And I think it was when I was not with Sonny anymore, and then somehow it all started to click. But I always had gay friends. I actually almost got arrested at a party with my best friend at school. He was gay but he couldn't let anybody know, and he wanted me to go with him to a party and the party got raided. And we jumped out the bathroom window! It was high. We had to go over the bathtub into the window and jump out.

gay, do not buy Cher records! And I had another friend who had a Cher poster on his wall. I don't remember where he came from – some small town too – and his dad ripped it off the wall and he bought another one, put it inside his closet and said it was a way to really be who he was in spite of who his dad wanted him to be.

When in your life have you felt like the LGBTQ community was on your side when the rest of the world maybe was not? Always. I remember when I was doing (the play) Come Back to the Five and Dime (in 1976) and we had standing room only before And you got away? we got reviewed, and after we got reviewed Yep. nobody came except the community – the community, and little grey-haired old women Do you recall the moment that galvanized who came to matinees. We managed to stay you to stand up as an ally for the LGBTQ open until we could build back up the community? I'm not sure there was a moment; I'm not sure following. Also, the gay community, they just what it was. I just feel that, probably, there was don't leave you, they stay with you; that's one a moment where guys thought I was just one of thing that always keeps you going. you. It's like, there's a moment where you're What does that loyalty mean to you? either part of the group and you're absorbed There's been sometimes where I was just, you into the group and people love you as part of the group, or they don't even know you're alive, know, heartbroken about things, but it always gives you hope when there are people who you know? Gay men are very loyal. think that you're cute and worthwhile and an Look, I have a friend (makeup artist) Kevyn Aucoin – he's dead now – but he told me when artist. It's a great thing to have in your back he was young, he was growing up in some place pocket. in Louisiana and said how horrible it was to have to hide and be frightened, and he said he Your mother once told you when you were loved listening to Cher records. I think that's a a child: “You won't be the prettiest, you dead giveaway! Haha! If you want to hide being won't be the most talented, you won't be

the smartest, but you are special.” What kind of mark did that leave on you? It just left some sort of indelible, interior tattoo. Because I have gone through so much shit in my life. I can't tell you how many times people have written, “She'll be gone by next year.” I remember I got really pissed off at somebody and I went, “I'll be here and you'll be gone.” I don't think I believed it at the time, but I was just angry.

found out Chaz was gay, I didn't go through it that easily; when I found out Chaz was (transitioning) ... except we talked about it a lot, actually. But then Chaz didn't mention it anymore, so I kind of forgot. And what I think is, there's such a fear of losing the child you love, and what will replace that child. I think it's about the fear, mostly. I felt, who will this new person be? Because I know who the person is now, but who will the new person be and how will it work and will I have lost somebody? And then I thought of something else: I thought, my god, if I woke up tomorrow and I was a man, I would be gouging my eyes out. And so I know that if that's what you feel then that must be so painful that it doesn't make any difference what anyone else feels or what anyone else thinks. Chaz is so happy now and we get along better than ever.

Tiny tech is on the rise! Courtesy of

Even for the most organized people in the world, small-space living has its challenges. For one thing, you just don't have as much room to decorate or arrange your belongings. But beyond that, it can be almost impossible to find somewhere to keep the gadgets and appliances that make living easier, or find ones small enough to work in your tiny abode. All hope is not lost though, as more and more companies are coming out with tools that are not only useful but sized perfectly for small spaces. And if you're not sure where to start, we rounded up 10 trusty gadgets that are sure to make living little feel like you're living large.

By Bridget Mallon

Handheld Fabric Steamer When I first moved to New York City, I naively thought I'd have space to store my much-used iron and ironing board. But after one glimpse of my tiny room with no closets to speak of, I realized it was time to say goodbye. Now, I couldn't be happier with my no-iron lifestyle. My handheld steamer not only blasts out any wrinkle in no time, making my clothes look professionally pressed, but it can also be used to refresh upholstery and remove tough odors. Oh, and its compact size means it fits perfectly into smaller homes and apartments. Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Fabric Steamer, $59.99; target.com

Hand Vacuum Gone are the days of hulking around an oversized (and likely overpriced) vacuum, thanks to this handy, high-powered handheld version. It's equally equipped to take care of wet and dry spills, and it doesn't use any cords. Thanks to its wall-mount/charging station, it also fits seamlessly onto any free wall, whether in a closet, cabinet or even the kitchen. BLACK+DECKER Wet/Dry Cordless Hand Vacuum, $44.99; amazon.com 50

USB Bed Lifts Any small-space dweller knows the importance of utilizing every square inch, even under the bed, which is where bed lifts come in. Adding even a few inches of space can drastically change how much you're able to store, and the genius inclusion of power outlets and a USB port eliminates the need for keeping clunky power strips on the floor. Studio 3B 4-Piece USB Bed Lift Set, $29.99; bedbathandbeyond.com

Immersion Hand Blender Blenders and food processors tend to be bulky, and let's be honest, not used all that frequently, so why do we dedicate so much counter or cabinet space to them? Well, thanks to immersion blenders those days are in the past. These sleek gadgets can be used to make smoothies, soups, purees and more, and this version even comes with a whisk attachment, beaker and mini food chopper. Ovente 6 Speed 3-in-1 Immersion Hand Blender, $34.99; amazon.com Personal Blender While immersion blenders are great for people who want to go beyond just smoothies and shakes, if delectable drinks are all you'll be making, a personal blender may be more your speed. The compact size means it will slide easily into any open space on your counter or in a cabinet, and you blend your beverage right in the travel bottle so there's less cleanup. Oster MyBlend 20 oz Personal Blender, $24.94; walmart.com

Compact Humidifier If your small space suffers from a lack of great circulation, or dry air leaves your sinuses feeling worse for wear, it might be time to consider a humidifier. Don't worry about it taking up the entire room, or making a ton of noise though, this smaller version is extra quiet and can be adjusted to your perfect level of moisture. Honeywell Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier, $49.95; honeywellstore.com

Mini Laundry Machine One of the biggest downfalls of small-space living (in my humble opinion) is that there's rarely enough room for a washer and dryer. And having to spend your free time at a laundromat is just not fun. Enter the Laundry Pod: a portable laundry machine that's eco-friendly, compact and easy to use. It has enough space to wash up to 10 garments at once, uses minimal water and no electricity at all. What could be better? Laundry Pod, $79.99; storebound.com

Mini Bath Scale While keeping a scale at home is definitely not for everyone, people who do rely on them to keep their health on track know they can often take up a considerable amount of space. That's what makes this shrunken-down version so great; it still offers accurate readings, just at a much smaller scale. Taylor Mini Digital Glass Scale, $18.99; shoptaylorusa.com

1.5-Quart Slow Cooker Whip up dips, soups and mini meals in this little slow cooker. Its small size means it can be tucked away easily, and makes it ideal for home cooks who only have one or two mouths to feed. Cooks 1.5 Quart Slow Cooker, $20; jcpenney.com

Handheld Espresso Maker Say goodbye to the days of dedicating half your kitchen counter to that barely functional coffee maker you've had for years. This little gadget lets you churn out one cup of perfect espresso at a time, and is the perfect size to keep tucked in a drawer, or to bring with you on your travels. Minipresso Hand Espresso Maker, $59.95; crateandbarrel.com 52

Check out these designer-approved ideas that will help you add some fallflair to your home.

Layers of Texture & Faux Fur "As temperatures begin to drop after a long, hot and humid summer, I can't help but anticipate the arrival of fall. I love to mix up a few of the decorative items around my clients' homes, as well as my own, as fall is one of my favorite times. An easy way to create a cozier vibe is by changing out throw pillows, adding textural layers such as faux fur, leather and heavier throw blankets, and bringing in a more saturated color palette in both indoor and outdoor

spaces. And if you're up for splurging on a few investment pieces, now is a great time to reupholster chairs or small pieces like ottomans for an updated look that can easily transition from season to season," designer Abbe Fenimore explains. Add Warmth With Fall Hues Marie Flanigan says, "warm things up — trade in that cheery summer palette for deep autumnal hues, like umber, mahogany and bronze. Toss in weathered woods, richly textured linens, and vibrant seasonal produce for a pastoral warmth that will captivate your heart and home."

sophisticated look that is also fall-ready," explains Los Angeles based designer, Caitlin Murray, from Black Lacquer Design Fall Scents "Add spicy colored pillows and throws to cozy up for fall. Don't forget scented candles, such as pumpkin or caramel apple, to give your space delicious aroma of autumn," says designer, Amy Conner-Murphy from ACM Design.

Bring the Outside In "Bring the outside charm in. I love adding natural textures such as cotton, leaves and twigs mixed in with gourds and pumpkins for a soft fall feel. The contrast of a rustic urn or galvanized metal tray will highlight your fall foliage. Add in a preserved boxwood or a green berry ball for a pop of color contrast to highlight the warm tones and your fall feel will last all the way through Thanksgiving," explains Lauren, from Lauren Nicole Designs. Textured Pillows & Throws "When I want to cozy up my home for fall I always tend to change out my throws and pillows for chunkier, heavier ones with lots of texture like a chunky knit or faux fur. I also accessorize with 'warmer' feeling trays and accessorize by switching out whites for wood tones," says Lexi from Lexi Grace Designs. Comfy Reading Nook "Fall is a perfect opportunity to build a little nook in your home with a stylish vignette that encourages you to curl up with a good book or grab a warm throw and a hot cup of tea! If you're up for rearranging some furniture, you can pair an armchair with a side table or bookshelf in a corner space to create an instantly cozy nook. To build your vignette, decorate that side table or bookshelf using small objects (candles and incense trays come to mind for a full cozy effect), books, and tabletop lighting. Even if you don't rearrange any furniture, a vignette like this will create a polished and

Get Cozy With Velvet Edyta Czajkowska of EDYTA & CO. explains, "when the weather starts to get colder, swap out your summery linen throw pillows for cozy velvets. They will instantly up the "warm" factor and are great for snuggling up with on your sofa. In my client's party room, we had some custom velvet pillows made in vibrant colors to add a pop."

Accessorize With Seasonal Fruits Stefania Skrabak, principal designer at Art Home Garden says, "bring the season's bounty indoors! I like to use groupings of fresh fruits, like green apples and pears, and clusters of green and white pumpkins and blue hubbard squashes. Mound on a bed of eucalyptus in a rustic wooden bowl and accent with dried hydrangeas from the garden or branches picked up on a walk. Not only are they all beautiful, but you have ingredients for tonight's dinner and healthy snacks for the kiddos to graze on during the day!" Stacked Firewood Kelly Mittleman of Kelly and Co. Design explains, "stacked firewood is always a great touch in a metal bucket or on its own. Blankets and throws change the room instantly. Candles and a jug of fall branches on the table, and of course a pumpkin - anywhere." Hotspots.LGBT | 57

LGBT History Month celebrates the achievements of 31 lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender Icons. In 1994, Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher, believed a month should be dedicated to the celebration and teaching of gay and lesbian history, and gathered other teachers and community leaders. They selected October because public schools are in session and existing traditions, such as Coming Out Day (October 11), occur that month. Gay and Lesbian History Month was endorsed by GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the National Education Association and other national organizations. In 2006 Equality Forum assumed responsibility for providing content, promotion and resources for LGBT History Month. The LGBT community is the only community worldwide that is not taught its history at home, in public schools or in religious institutions. LGBT History Month provides role models, builds community and makes the civil rights statement about our extraordinary national and international contributions.

RAINBOW FLAG DESIGNER (BORN: JUNE 2, 1951 - D. MARCH 31, 2017)

G

ilbert Baker was an American artist and LGBT activist best known for creating the rainbow flag. The flag provided a defining symbol for the LGBT civil rights movement and is considered the first and most widely recognized gay symbol today. Growing up gay in the small rural town of Chanute, Kansas, Baker felt like an outcast. After spending a year in college, he was drafted into the army and served as a medic. He was stationed in San Francisco, where he remained for most of his life. Baker became friends with Harvey Milk, a gay rights leader and among the first openly gay politicians elected to public office. A member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Milk asked Baker to create a symbol for the gay rights movement. Baker flew his first rainbow flag at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade on June 25, 1978, where roughly a quarter of a million marchers participated. Milk was assassinated in November of that year. Following Milk's death, demand for Baker's flag increased dramatically. With the help of volunteers using trash cans of dye, Baker made his first flag in the attic of the Gay Community Center of San Francisco. The original design included eight stripes: pink for sexuality, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for the sun, green for nature, turquoise for magic, blue for peace and purple for the human spirit. Many years and flags later, the self-described “gay Betsy Ross” spent months creating a 30-

“I love going to cities around the world and seeing the rainbow flag.” foot wide, mile-long flag featuring just six colors of the rainbow. Commissioned in 1994 for the 25thanniversary of the Stonewall riots, it was hoisted by thousands of New York City marchers. The Guinness Book of World Records officially declared it the largest flag in the world. In 2003 Baker was the subject of a featurelength documentary, “Rainbow Pride.” He was interviewed for the DVD of the 2008 Academy Award-winning film “Milk,” and he was featured in Dustin Lance Black's 2017 documentary series about LGBT rights, “When We Rise.” In 2015 the Museum of Modern Art listed the rainbow flag as one of the most important symbols globally. It continues to fly at gay marches and events around the world. Baker died at age 65. The New York Times published his obituary.

INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED CHEF (BORN: MAY 5, 1903 - D. JANUARY 21, 1985)

“Food is our common ground, a universal experience.”

ubbed the “Dean of American Cookery” by The New York Times in 1954, James Beard was a prominent American chef, culinary instructor and television personality. He is regarded as the first TV chef. Beard wrote 20 cookbooks and trained countless other acclaimed chefs. Born in Portland, Oregon, Beard was exposed to Pacific Northwest cooking, which included seafood, moose meat and venison. His family made meals using wild berries and freshly caught fish. Chinese culture and the meals prepared by his family's Chinese helper also influenced him, along with the culture and cuisine of France, where he spent his 20s. During the 1950s, Beard was known for bringing French cuisine to the American middle and upper classes. After briefly attending Reed College in Portland, Beard was expelled. He believed it was due to his homosexuality. In 1937 he moved to New York City, and in 1939 he founded a successful catering company, Hors D'oeuvre, Inc., which served the Manhattan elite. In 1940, at age 37, Beard published his first cookbook, “Hors D'oeuvre & Canapé s,” which contained a collection of his catering recipes. In 1942 he garnered acclaim for elevating outdoor

cooking with “Cook It Outdoors.” His bestselling cookbook, “Beard on Beard,” was released in 1973. He also wrote articles and columns for numerous magazines such as Woman's Day and House & Garden. In 1946 Beard began hosting television's first live cooking show, “I Love to Eat,” on NBC. His popularity led to endorsement deals for products such as Omaha Steaks and Adolph's Meat Tenderizer. In 1955 he created the James Beard Cooking School in New York City and Seaside, Oregon. He dedicated more than 30 years of his life to teaching and mentoring chefs at his two schools and to lecturing at women's clubs and other civic groups around the nation. Beard died of heart failure at the age of 81. The James Beard Foundation was established in 1986 to honor his life's work. Since 1991 the prestigious James Beard Awards have annually honored chefs and restaurants. Early recipients included Wolfgang Puck and Rick Bayless. The Foundation's scholarship program has provided more than $4.6 million in financial assistance to students and chefs to help develop and advance their culinary careers.

The American Family Association's Bryan Fischer used his Sept. 24 "Focal Point" program to rail against the evil doers standing in the way of Jesus Trump's righteous path. “Satan, if you're going to get to Brett Kavanaugh, you are going to have to go through us, because we are standing firm in the strength and the power of the Lord,” Fischer said. In other words, the women accusing Kavanaugh are agents of the devil. You know, how bitches be lyin' about rich and powerful men because of how rewarding it is for the accusers' personal and professional lives. After all, women love death threats. They love being told to kill themselves. They love having to flee their homes. The love compromising the safety and security of their loved ones. The prize is ruining an innocent man's life. Actually, the only person talking about a prize here is Fischer. “There is a prize here, and that's the placement of Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court,” he said. That is what Satan does not want to see happen. He's using every trick that he has in his arsenal to fight that, to keep that from happening. And every trick is, of course, a woman scorned. No wonder the Equal Rights Amendment never got passed! Equality is the work of Satan.

OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI

“That is [Satan's] holy grail right now, to stop Brett Kavanaugh from being seated on the Supreme Court because Brett Kavanaugh represents such a threat to his agenda: to use the Supreme Court to advance a regressive, backwards, antibiblical, anti-Christian, anti-American point of view,” Fischer continued. “He's had control of the Supreme Court now in every meaningful way since the 1960s, he's not going to let go of that without a fight.” Hmm, I wonder what “regressive, backwards, anti-biblical, antiChristian, anti-American” points of view he's talking about? The right to abortion and the right for same-sex couples to marry come to mind. I have a feeling he isn't talking about Citizens United. Look, I don't believe in Satan, but I do believe that Fischer is crazy enough to believe the things he's saying and that he has followers crazy enough to believe him. But can we just take a moment to reflect on the fact that the United States has an accused, and admitted, sexual assaulter as president who is being treated like a savior by the Christian right? And how President Sex Crimes is now poised to get a second (hi, Clarence Thomas) sex-crimer on the Supreme Court bench? I mean, sure, it might seem like things are falling apart, what with more accusers coming forward to say that Brett Kavanaugh has done more heinous things than just that one-time, free-pass, whoopsy daisy, boys-will-be-boys attempted rape in high school. Sadly, we don't live in a country governed by people who care much

No wonder the Equal Rights Amendment never got passed! Equality is the work of Satan. about women being assaulted, otherwise we wouldn't have Mitch McConnell vowing to get Kavanaugh's nomination rammed through. If we cared about women we wouldn't constantly be framing these narratives as, “He said, she said, but she's probably lying.” We have woman after woman — and some men, too — coming forward with their stories of assault. The evidence is overwhelming that this is a deeply rooted and widespread problem in America. There's something very broken about how we raise boys and what we allow of men this country. And when those boys and men have wealth and privilege behind them, well, they can do anything. Even grab 'em by the pussy. If we cared about women we'd have done

something about it a long time ago and voted these creeps out, never mind not voting them IN to begin with — remember, millions of people, the majority of white men AND women voters, heard Trump brag about sexual assault and then VOTED FOR HIM ANYWAY. That said, there are SO MANY WOMEN RUNNING right now. And I mean running for office, which is great. Though sadly there are a lot of women running from men, too. But if we elect women who actually care about women — a.k.a. Democrats. Republican women are fired — we might actually get laws enacted that protect women rather than just laws restricting what women can do with their reproductive organs. Do not sit the midterms out. Vote on Nov. 6, even if only to gloat to Bryan Fischer that you were compelled by Satan to do so.

HOT BODIES

ast month they decided to cut your overtime at work and now you're stressed over what you need to trim from your already spartan budget. A couple of days ago you learned that one friend has been diagnosed with cancer and another couple you pal around with is throwing in the towel on their relationship. Every time you check the news you feel frustrated, angry and helpless over what's happening in this country and across the globe. Sometimes it seems that everywhere you turn there is stress, anxiety and toxicity. Remember, you don't have to become a victim to all this negativity. The key to your own happiness and well-being lies within

you. Here are some effective and creative ways to become a powerhouse of positive energy. Retreat and simplify. Your energy has an inverse relationship to the amount of noise and clutter in your life. Clear your closets and house of obsolete possessions. Disconnect from self-absorbed, so- called friends who drain your energy. Say “No” to unwanted social commitments that swallow up your valuable free time. Schedule some “me” time – read, listen to music, take a walk, swim or bike ride – anything that will refresh and replenish you! Refuse to be controlled by social media. Tune out the frenetic information overload that bombards you from e-mails, texts, tweets, blogs and Facebooking. A lot of this is either nonsensical clatter, outright negativity, or other stuff that really isn't important. If you find the idea of turning off your phone, or shutting down your computer for a few hours unacceptable, then you're just the one who needs to take a break! Stay happily active. Exercise, even just 20 minutes a day, gets those feel good endorphins pumping and clears your mind as you do something clean and invigorating for the body. Enjoy fresh air and Florida sunshine by taking your activities outdoors.

Banish negative energy. Ancient Chinese medicine teaches that the body and mind are vitally linked; energy (chi) regulates a person's physical, mental and spiritual health; and that each of us is composed of opposing, inseparable forces – Yin and Yang – that need to stay balanced. When your chi flows smoothly, your world is a finer place. Stress, noise and negativity cause toxic energy imbalances to mind and body. Balance your chi by trying acupuncture, Yoga, massage or guided meditation. Check out and indulge. You may not be able to afford expensive spa treatments and amenities, but you can try an at home spa approach. Relax with an aromatherapy bath or shower by adding a few drops of lavender to the steamy water. Apply a comforting chilled gel eye mask to your face as you nap. Try rubbing your temples with massage lotion containing a few drops of peppermint essential oil for invigoration. Be creative, be good to yourself!

“Balance your chi by trying acupuncture, Yoga, massage or guided meditation.”

need ADVICE

By Andreus Quinones

Dear Andreus, My partner and I have been together for 3 years. So, in an effort to take things to the next step, we are planning to move in together. I am not particularly an animal person, mostly because of my allergies to pet dander. He has a dog and a cat. I could deal with them in short spurts, but now he is expecting me to live with them. I know it is wrong of me to ask him to get rid of them, but I cannot handle everyday life fighting my allergies. What do I do? Sincerely, Allergic Dear Allergic, That is indeed a tough one. Obviously, you and your partner love each other a great deal, since you are taking a serious step such as living together. I also understand how difficult dealing with allergies are. I am an animal lover, but am allergic to cats. You certainly cannot ask him to get rid of his dog and cat. If he is like most people I know, and has had them for any length of time, they are most certainly like family to him. The key here is trying to find a middle-ground so that everyone is happy. You could always talk to your doctor or an Allergist, and see if there is an OTC medication or prescription that you could take, that would help alleviate your symptoms. Try that out first, and if it works, then moving in should not be a problem. Make sure that the pets are groomed regularly which should also help, and commence to starting a live-in relationship with your partner and your new babies!! 110 | Hotspots.LGBT

Dear Andreus, I have an amazing boyfriend for two years now. The issue, at least for my friends, is that I am 26 and he is 42. I am getting so tired of getting called a houseboy, or people thinking that I just want him because he is financially established. I really do love him, but my friends tell me that I should be with someone closer to my age, and so should he. I know it shouldn't, but it really bothers me. I don't want to lose my friends because I disagree with them, and I certainly don't wanna lose him. How am I supposed to handle this? Sincerely, TornInTwo Dear TornInTwo, Let me cut right to the chase. If you love him, and he loves you, and you are happy, then age means nothing! No matter who you are with, people are always going to analyze your relationship and think what they want to. You have no control over that. What you do have control over is your happiness, and how much attention you give to the noise. Age has nothing to do with maturity or intelligence. If you spend all of your time worrying about what other people say or think about your relationship, you will miss out on it, and worse, eventually sabotage it. Do you, be with who you want to be with, and be happy. If your friends are really your friends, they will support you no matter what!
