36th Annual
Headdress Ball In Key West
C
ombining entertainment and creative rivalry, Key West's Headdress Ball typically dazzles audiences with contestants' lamboyant masks and outrageous headdress regalia. The 36th annual ball is set for 8 pm Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Key West Amphitheater at Truman Waterfront Park. The gala is the premier LGBTQ event of the subtropical island's 10-day Fantasy Fest celebration. More than 25 entrants wearing masks and headgear constructions — many decorated with feathers, sequins, unique accessories or even moving parts — are expected to vie for cash prizes including a irst-place award of $3,000. While some competitors wear full costumes, the panel of VIP judges evaluates ensembles only from the shoulders up. The ball is produced each year by the Key West Business Guild, one of the United States' oldest LGBTQ business organizations, and serves as a major fundraiser for it. “The Headdress Ball will be an evening of creativity, fun and surprise guest entertainment taking place during the competition — something you won't want to miss,” said Dan Skahen, the guild's executive director. The celebrity lineup includes master of
ceremonies Tom Luna, DJ Rude Girl and renowned female impersonator Christopher Peterson opening the show. Talents including Broadway veteran Terri White and female impersonator Randy Roberts are to offer top-class entertainment between headdress performances. Gates open at 6:30 p.m., providing opportunities for attendees to enjoy food and beverages offered for purchase by local vendors before the show. Spectators also will have ample time for mingling and photo ops with the headdress entrants. General admission tickets are $30 per person, with reserved tables for four people starting at $250. Reserved table holders may pre-purchase food and refreshments to be delivered to their table during the evening.

Witch at a loud party and navigate a sea of drunk people, or sit on your couch, horde Reese's Cups for your own use, and watch NBC's A Very Wicked Halloween: Celebrating 15 Years on Broadway. The more comfortable option seems clear – we'll be enjoying network television, complete with commercials, and hanging with Elphaba and Glinda, sister witches whose pre-Dorothy drama is the story of the smash hit Broadway musical. Hosted by original cast members Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, this new concert special will feature songs from Wicked performed by them, as well as by the show's current Broadway cast, Ariana Grande,
Sandra Bernhard will regularly strike a Pose Nurse Judy is back from her break and she's still not having any of your nonsense. Oh, wait, sorry, have you caught up on the first season of Pose yet? Not yet? Then drop what you're doing and watch, because not only is it historymaking, featuring the largest transgender series regular cast, as well as the largest LGBTQ cast ever for a scripted series, and not only is it coming back for a second season, but season one guest star Sandra Bernhard – as the tough nurse whose lonely job is caring for a hospital wing's worth of young gay men with AIDS – is coming back as a series regular. The amplification of this storyline 32 | Hotspots.LGBT
on the show was inevitable, of course, as the series is set in the late 1980s when HIV/AIDS had already devastated a generation of queer people. And the casting is nearly perfect, since Bernhard has been a fixture – now legendary in her own right – of LGBTQ culture since that time. But as long as we're being given the gift of Miss Bernhard, we'd also love to see Nurse Judy moonlighting as a cabaret singer in her off hours. Listen, honey, you don't get if you don't ask.
Stay home, eat candy, watch Wicked Halloween Choices: dress up like a Sexy
Pentatonix, and others still to be announced. Now, if this were an old school TV special, those “others” would wind up being some sort of professional sports figure who can't sing, a comedian who can't sing, and a puppet. Aren't you glad you live in 2018 where it'll most likely be a synergistic appearance by Kelly Clarkson or a cast member from This is Us? You are. Won't You Be My Neighbor? For over 30 years, national treasure Fred Rogers welcomed kids who felt different to his “neighborhood.” Maybe you were there, enchanted by the trolley and talking puppets. Maybe you, like me, felt like you didn't it in with the other kids, and maybe, again like me, Mr. Rogers made you feel more at home in this big, scary world – for 30 minutes every day during his longtime PBS children's show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, anyway. Uncertain, divisive times like ours call for another soulsoothing balm, and documentarian Morgan Neville, who rightfully won an Oscar for 20 Feet From Stardom, delivers just that with his Rogers-centered doc Won't You Be My Neighbor?. Perhaps most surprising to those
watching his show as a child: Rogers was a quiet gay and civil rights activist,
demonstrated by the casting of gay, black actor François Clemmons, who portrayed Of icer
Clemmons. In the doc, Clemmons extols Rogers' no-barriers-for-love inclusiveness and compassion for everyone, recalling his special bond with Rogers, whom he considered a father igure. Beyond interviews with Neighborhood cast members and Rogers' kin, as well as archival conversations with Rogers himself, vintage footage dating back to the show's 1968 premiere is featured, including an early episode with Rogers as his alter-ego cat puppet, Daniel Striped Tiger, expressing through song feelings of inferiority. It'll wring your eyes dry, but save some tears for the rest of this moving trip down memory lane, a tightly constructed tribute to Rogers' philosophies on love and kindness for a world still trying to grasp both.
live in many of the same rom-com conventions as any Sandra Bullock or Jennifer Garner lovefest. And on that same massive level, in wide release on the big screen, where gay teen Simon miserably navigates out-gay life at high school as he searches for “Blue,” an unidenti ied, closeted schoolmate he's con ided in through an emotionally invested email exchange. The proceedings are richly gay and heartwarming and nostalgic: a Whitney Houston musical number, a shamelessly '80s-by-way-of-John Hughes sensibility and an af irming tearjerker of a mom speech from Garner herself. I cried lots, and its cathartic sweetness – being the great love story it promised to be – charmed me and the Simon I once was. A deleted scene featuring actorslash-dreamboat Colton Haynes is among the Blu-ray's special features, which also includes more deleted scenes, a Berlanti commentary and a book-to-screen featurette. Also Out
Love, Simon You can think Love, Simon isn't enough because it isn't. Not yet, anyway. Gay culture has long reveled in queer art- ilms with niche-queer narratives, where societal pressures befell closeted cowboys in Brokeback Mountain, and where homosexuality and blackness intersected in Moonlight. Comparatively, Love, Simon is one serviceable but slighter-in-scope pop bop. But if you saw it in a theater with crying teens and their crying moms, like I did, then you know the movie's banality alone – inally, gay people get their John Hughes ilm – is groundbreaking. Directed by Greg Berlanti from a script based on 2016's young-adult bestseller Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agend_, I didn't expect Love, Simon to deliver high-brow gay cinema – not if its irst order of business was to let queerness
A Raisin in the Sun Even after Lorraine Hansberry adapted her 1959 play A Raisin in the Sun – the irst play by a black woman to be performed on Broadway – for the silver screen, the 1961 ilm, directed by Daniel Petrie, preserved the theatrica l simplicity of the source material. The story's familial and racial tensions also remained fraught with complications: A money-strapped black family, the Youngers, living in close quarters in the Chicago slums

a fresh start. That fresh start looks different for single mother and grandmother Lena Younger (Claudia McNeil), her daughter Beneatha (Diana Sands), her son Walter (Sidney Poitier), plus his wife Ruth (Ruby Dee) and their son Travis (Stephen Perry). Tremendous performances – particularly Poitier and McNeil as the family's willful rock, which she inhabits with true grit and grace – are the touchstones of Hansberry's moving portrait of a black family hoping to rise above the economic and cultural forces against them, and the irsthand destruction it causes when they can't. But joy – ind it, the ilm suggests, even if the world won't let you have it. Criterion Collection's Bluray restoration of the classic gleans an array of well-rounded supplemental material, including interview features with Hansberry and Petrie.

the supportive dad, Miles (Ike Barinholtz), who suspects his daughter will be the only boy-averse girl of that girlfriend group, while the other parents, Lisa (Leslie Mann) and Mitchell (John Cena), have a parental meltdown and embark on a mad chase to cock-block their kids. Desperate to shut down their impending sexcapades after decoding a series of suggestive emojis, which is funny because watching parents try to igure out modern-day technology will forever be funny, Lisa, Miles and Mitchell go to raunchy extremes to save their children's virginity. I laughed plenty at the ridiculous gags (one involving Gina Gershon playing naked Marco Polo with her husband), but what threw me was the ilm's sweet, emotional through line, set in motion in the beginning when
Mann, perfect in scenes where heart and humor collide, desperately tries to pretend to be OK with her college-bound daughter leaving the nest. Something else to celebrate besides Mann: sex comedies with high schoolers where one just so happens to be a lesbian. Yes and thank you, Hollywood.

Before joining The Washington Post, Capehart was a researcher for NBC's “The Today Show.” He went on to the New York Daily News (NYDN), where he served on the editorial board from 1993 until 2000. There, Capehart was a key contributor to a 16-month series that helped save the Apollo Theater in Harlem. The project earned the NYDN editorial board the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Best Editorial Writing. Capehart left the NYDN for Bloomberg News and served as policy adviser to Michael Bloomberg's successful campaign for New York City mayor. Capehart returned to the NYDN in 2002 as editorial page deputy editor. He left in 2004 to join the global public relations firm of Hill & Knowlton as senior vice president and counselor of public affairs. In 2007 Capehart became the youngest member ever to join the editorial board of The Washington Post. His opinions focus on the intersection of social and cultural issues and politics. He hosts his own podcast, “Cape Up,” and is a contributor to MSNBC, regularly serving as a substitute anchor on programs such as “The Cycle” and “Way Too Early.” He has appeared on ABC News' “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” Reporters Roundtable, and in 2018 he became a guest host of New York Public Radio's “Midday on WNYC.”
“One of the burdens of being a black male is carrying the heavy weight of other people's suspicions.”
Capehart often speaks publicly about issues of equality and social justice. He has moderated panel discussions on these topics for the Center for American Progress, the Aspen Institute, the Aspen Ideas Festival and The Atlantic's Washington Ideas forum. Among other recognition, Capehart was named a 2011 Esteem Honoree—a distinction bestowed on individuals who have made a positive impact on both the African-American and LGBT communities. In 2017 Capehart married his longtime partner, Nick Schmit, the assistant chief of protocol at the U.S. State Department. The New York Times covered the ceremony at which former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder officiated. The couple lives in Washington, D.C.

DONALD TRUMP
I
t has been a strange week. For starters, Donald Trump announced that, after an on-again, off-again rollercoaster relationship, he and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un are officially an item now. "I was really being tough and so was he," Trump told a rally of supporters in West Virginia. "And we would go back and forth. And then we fell in love. No really. He wrote me beautiful letters.” Isn't it romantic? Or, at least, it would be if Trump knew how to read. Boy, are Republicans going to be mad when they learn that Trump is gay! I'm kidding, of course. Well, kind of. It's striking that Republicans would probably freak out if Trump came out as gay, but they have no problem with him embracing authoritarian dictators who murder and starve their people. #SquadGoals In other words, in Republicanica being gay is bad, but being a murderous dictator shows that you're a macho man who gets things done! This is an important distinction given the news that the Trump administration has begun “denying visas to same-sex domestic partners of foreign diplomats and United Nations employees, and requiring those already in the United States to get married by the end of the year or leave the country,” according to foreignpolicy.com. Now, on the surface this might not seem like a big deal. I mean, opposite-sex couples can't get visas for their partners if they're not married, and marriage equality is the law of the land in the U.S., so this change just makes everything equal right?
OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI
Wrong. We're talking about the most antiLGBTQ administration since Stonewall here, so let's not kid ourselves. Former U.S. Ambassador to UN Samantha Power Tweeted on Sept. 28, “Needlessly cruel & bigoted: State Dept. will no longer let same-sex domestic partners of UN employees get visas unless they are married. But only 12% of UN member states allow same-sex marriage.” Only 12 percent. That's, um, really low. If a doctor told you that your chances of survival were 12 percent, you'd better have all of your affairs in order. But these same-sex couples can just get married in the U.S. where it's legal, right? No big deal, just take the “I do” plunge! Except it's not that easy. Not only do most United Nations countries not allow same-sex couples to marry, but, according to Fortune, “in more than 70, same-sex relationships are punishable by law.” According to Akshaya Kumar, the Deputy United Nations Director at Human Rights Watch, in these 70+ countries, “homosexual conduct remains illegal and in many, anyone found 'guilty' can be sentenced to harsh punishments including years in prison or even public caning.” Morocco, which has thrown gay men in prison, and Malaysia, where a lesbian couple were recently subjected to a public caning, are just two examples. "The U.S. government should recognize, as it had for almost nine years until today, that requiring a marriage as proof of bona fide partnership is a bad and cruel policy, one

Not only do most United Nations countries not allow same-sex couples to marry, but, according to Fortune, “in more than 70, same-sex relationships are punishable by law.” that replicates the terrible discrimination many LGBT people face in their own countries,” writes Kumar, “and should be immediately reversed.” This policy, writes Kumar, “may make it impossible for some LGBT UN staff to live together with their partners in the United States.” Not that the Trump administration cares about keeping families together. “Bad and cruel” policies are the administration's specialty. After all, the U.S. is still keeping immigrant children away from their parents, warehoused in tent cities. Something that should be a five-alarm outrage receiving wall-to-wall coverage, but has to compete with the nonstop barrage of scandals coming from this administration. Not to mention the gross inequities in our criminal justice system that tears and keeps families, a vast proportion of which are racial minorities, apart. Which makes it easy to overlook something

like discrimination against LGBTQ United Nations staff disguised as a benevolent push toward equality. Getting married for some of these couples is not a safe option. A legal, public marriage might put them in real danger. The kind of danger that same-sex couples in the U.S., though certainly facing backlash under the Trump regime, don't have to worry about. This is the kind of move you'd expect to see in a place like Vladimir Putin's Russia. Then again, Trump has declared his love for him, too. It's an alarming pattern. Vote on Nov. 6 like lives depend on it. Because they do.

Opera Fusion to perform Menotti's “The Medium” in Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach Join Opera Fusion for two performances of Gian Carlo Menotti's The Medium, a haunting tale of Madame Flora, a fake fortune teller who becomes unhinged when she meets up with the supernatural. The eerie plot includes sham séances in which Madam Flora's guests think they're communicating with deceased loved ones, as well as a phantom, a medium meltdown, a dark lullaby, a puppet theater, a confession and a shooting. The opera, sung in English, has two 30minute acts. For added fun, the company invites guests to come in their favorite costume or mask. At a post-show reception of wine and nibbles, Madame Flora will foretell and proclaim a costume contest winner; the prize will be two tickets to a future Opera Fusion show. Birgit Djupedal Fioravante, soprano and 72 | Hotspots.LGBT
executive director of the South Florida Company Opera Fusion, will star as Madame Flora. Singing the role of her daughter, Monica, will be Kyaunnee Richardson, a soprano and veteran of many Opera Fusion performances. The other artists are: Toby: Brayan Quevedo (a silent role); Mrs. Gobineau: Sandra Marante, soprano; Mr. Gobineau: Matthew Bischoff, tenor; and Mrs. Nolan: Shanna Nolan Gundry, mezzo-soprano. Music director for The Medium is Gordon Roberts, and the stage and set/lighting designer is Ardean Landhuis. Fioravante made her Carnegie Hall debut with the Opera Orchestra of New York singing Fricka in scenes from Wagner's Ring Cycle before moving to Florida to raise her two daughters. She has continued to perform in opera, concerts and recitals, appearing on radio and television. She has been a guest soloist with symphony orchestras and opera companies including Pittsburgh Opera, Florida Grand Opera and Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. Menotti (1911-2007) wrote both the words and music for The Medium. His many other works include Amahl and the Night Visitors, The Consul, The Saint of Bleecker Street and Help, Help, the Globolinks!
Opera Fusion was born in 2014 to fill a void in the arts community in South Florida — to provide high-quality opera at an affordable price, featuring local artists. It aims to build new audiences by introducing new generations to the beauty and expressiveness of the human voice and the operatic art form in all its many facets.. Performances of The Medium will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at Sunshine Cathedral, 1480 S.W. Ninth Ave., Fort Lauderdale; and 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, 500 Spencer Drive, West Palm Beach. Tickets, at $30 for either show, are available at OperaFusion.org and at the door.

HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti
It's a No-Brainer: Dumbbells Are Your Smartest Choice!
I
‘ve never understood why they call them “dumbbells”. These little bars that come with plates secured to the ends of them in various sizes and weights are the most practical and efficient way to work out any muscle group in the body. Whether you're in a crowded gym, or at home on the couch, you can do a simple, quick set of curls, extensions or raises anytime. You can keep your sophisticated health club machines, I'll stick with the basics. Here's why dumbbells are your wisest choice in workout equipment. Dumbbells force you to use better form. Working with expensive specialized equipment doesn't necessarily guarantee you a successful workout, especially if your form sucks. With a dumbbell in each hand, you can better feel the impact of the weights on individual muscles. You can also get a better perception of whether you are executing each
rep of each set properly. Dumbbells are great for basic exercises as well as isolation movements where you want to target a specific muscle. Sure, if you're an Olympic power lifter requiring hundreds of pounds to lift, dumbbells may not suit you, but I'd say 90% of all fitness enthusiasts can do everything they need with dumbbells.

rest to keep that heart pumping. Anyone who does circuit training where you combine cardio with weights will tell you how invaluable dumbbells are to their program!
Dumbbells are more practical and cost efficient. If you're working out at home all you need is an adjustable bench and a few sets of dumbbells. Cost: $100 or less if you find a decent used set. You can store them under a bed or in a closet easily and whip them out at any time for quick access. In a crowded commercial gym, all you need is to grab your dumbbells and find a small space or corner to do your thing.
Using dumbbells can give you a great cardiovascular workout. Yes, if you use lighter weights and do faster reps, you can easily get your heart rate up into the target zone. Once you get it there, go from set to set with little
With dumbbells you are capable of anything because they are really versatile! If it's shoulders you're working, try dumbbell military presses and front and side raises. You can perform many different types of curls and extensions for biceps and triceps. Any chest or back workout should include flat and incline dumbbell bench presses and one arm dumbbell rows as well as shrugs. There are also myriads of different kinds of squats and lunges you can perform with dumbbells for butt and legs.
