At the center of the new record is a heartfelt duet between father-and-son, as 20 year-old Matteo Bocelli steps into the limelight on 'Fall On Me' - a beautifully poignant duet which reflects the bond between parent and child. It will appear in the end credits of the hotlyanticipated new Disney film, The Nutcracker and The Four Realms, starring Keira Knightley, Mackenzie Foy, Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman, to be released on November 2nd.

Sì is an album about heart and soul, positivity and family, melody and magic. And for that reason, Bocelli chose the strong, simple title. "In this historical period we are going through right now, we too often say no. But yes is the word you say when you have your first

kiss, when you agree with somebody, when want to make someone feel good. Sì is the word you say every time things will end well. For a thousand and one reasons, sì is the expression of a positive, powerful, human word and feeling and emotion." And so, in his 60th birthday year, Andrea Bocelli is proud to return to where it all began. His uplifting new album Sì gives us a window into the world of this extraordinary singer and global icon. 10 Tricks for a Prizewinning Halloween Costume from the Queen of Costumes

The Newly Crowned Miss Gay America 2019: Andora Te'tee n anticipation of Halloween costume contests everywhere, here are 10 tricks for a prizewinning look from the queen of costumes herself, Miss Gay America 2019, Andora Te'tee.

1. Pick a simple concept and then be the best at it. Example: the devil. Be the best devil! You don't want people wondering who you are supposed to be.

2. Make sure you don't have anything blocking your mouth. That way nothing gets between you and your cocktail! 3. If you can't glue it, don't do it! Glue is the fastest way to make costumes. Yes that's right girl, you don't need a sewing machine to look good in Halloween drag!

28 | Hotspots.LGBT

8. Yes Girl: Your shoes must match your costume! This can easily be done with glue, fabric pieces or spray paint.

Photo's by Kiet Thai and Luis Romero

9. Your costume must sparkle! Everybody's eyes are drawn to sparkle. So bring the glitter and rhinestones.

10. Go big or go home. Halloween only happens once a year!

For more information on Miss Gay America, go to: Missgayamerica.com or missgayamericapageant.blogspot.com

4. If you make your shoulders bigger, your waist will look smaller. Say yaass! to shoulder pads and shoulder decorations.

5. Add lights. Tuck battery packs away into wigs hats or pockets. This extra element will make you the center of attention at the party.

sexy or shocking, after all it's Halloween!

6. Show o your best asset. Pick one: legs, ass, waist, or chest. It's okay to be

7. Do contour. Do you know you can contour chest, six-packs, and cheek bones? Hotspots.LGBT | 29

deep inside HOLLYWOOD By Romeo San Vicente

Paul Feig sells NBC on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist

34

Paul Feig, the man from Bridesmaids, is moving into musical television. He just sold a singing-dancing dramedy to NBC called Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. Cocreated by Austin Winsberg (Jake in Progress) and not to be confused with the film Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, the story concerns a young woman in her late 20s who is suddenly gifted with the ability to know the deepest desires of everyone around her. This is accomplished through music, somehow, and it sounds fairly delightful. Smash not withstanding – and frankly, that show was kind of weirdly cool but never got its due – NBC is responsible for a lot | Hotspots.LGBT

when it comes to the reintroduction of music into primetime network TV, so this seems like the right home for a show like this. Now, what would be truly extraordinary is a great non-corny cast and some good money poured into production and lots of people spontaneously dancing in the streets. You'll have appointment television then and an audience of queer people keeping it in business.

Heterosexuals to Invade Broadway

Remember the 2000 film Almost Famous? Remember how it was full of charming straight dude rock star characters you could actually

like? The kind who were laid back and nice to teenage band groupies and who led Elton John sing-alongs on buses? Well, you have Cameron Crowe to thank for that one, and if the forthcoming Broadway musical version of this film is successful it will be a testament to his powers. There's no casting news yet, but the project – the story of young Crowe-like music journalist on tour with an upand-coming rock band – will feature a book by Crowe based on his Academy Awardwinning screenplay, music by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) with lyrics by Kitt and Crowe, and directed by Jeremy Herrin (People, Places and Things). We're hopeful for this one, and not just because we're looking forward to “Tiny Dancer” belted out by an ensemble cast. If the current political landscape has us

CROWE soured on almost all heterosexual men, Crowe's superpower is reminding us that they can be soulful and sensitive and as sexy as young Billy Crudup.

Romeo San Vicente does it his way all the time, darling.

Hocus Pocus Live on Stage

The movie we all love this time of year, Hocus Pocus, is brought to life “Live on Stage” throughout Florida in October! Celebrating 5 years of this magical stage spectacle, I sat down with drag entertainer Nicole Halliwell, the show’s creator to discuss her cast, the tour, and why 25 years later, people still love Hocus Pocus.

What inspired you to produce Hocus Pocus Live? Like pretty much everyone on the planet who loves Halloween, I am OBSESSED with this movie, it’s my #1 go-to for the entire season. I have a deep love of doing productions and theater shows - so I just had to do a tribute to such an iconic ilm!

It looks like you’ve chosen your cast very carefully. Yes! I’ve been extremely lucky to know and work with these absolutely phenomenal people who put 110% into everything they do. Our show stars some incredible entertainers

including Calypso Monroe, Nicky Monet, Walter Washburn, Kendall Carassco, Nicole Saphire, and Ava Monet. Wait till you see how much they look and act like the movie characters!

Tell me about last year. Oh my god – amazing! We sold out all of our shows in minutes! Words cannot express how amazing all the love we received was. We inally broke ground in Orlando for 2017 thanks to the amazing people at Southern Nights and the lines were down the block… and we’re back to do it again this year! What should we look forward to in your 2018 shows? As this is our 5th anniversary – we’re proudly debuting an all-new extended show with new scenes, new effects, and so much more!

I heard you’ve been acknowledged by some of the actors in the ilm? YES! Kathy Najimy (Mary Sanderson) and Doug Jones (Billy Butcherson) have shown us love via

We have 7 shows across 4 cities - Tampa (10/26), Orlando (10/27), West Palm Beach (10/30), and Fort Lauderdale (10/31)! All of the tour dates and information is available on our website! Check it out!

Catch the 23-minute live action version of Hocus Pocus for their Season Finale Wednesday, October 31st at 10PM (Free season inale show - no cover.) inside Southern Nights Fort Lauderdale – or visit the of icial website for more tour dates, tickets, and information at www.hocuspocuslive.net. Celebrity impersonators tribute show. No af iliation with the Walt Disney Company.

social media, praising the show and our characters. That was mind-blowing for us. Growing up watching this movie and having the actors appreciate your portrayal of them left us speechless!

Why do people love this movie so much? Even after 25 years, it's so synonymous with Halloween. Something about the magic of Bette, Kathy, and Sarah as a trio, and how well the story was cast and told like only Disney can. I can watch it 500 times and I’ll never get tired of it. It makes me happy to see so many new generations getting to experience and love this movie the way I do. A tradition for decades to come! Where can we see Hocus Pocus Live on Stage?

From a Grateful Community

William "Bill" Calcaterra aka POMPANO BILL Last week, our community lost an icon and friend. Bill touch many lives over the decades as he served our community, not only as a photographer but as a mentor and friend to many. With so many condolences still pouring in, we thought the best way to communicate our feelings just was to share a few comments that capture the essence of a man who was loved and admired by so many: It has been a day of re lection on my 27 year of friendship and association with Bill Calcaterra, Pompano Bill. It's been a dif icult day but I am at peace with his passing. Both Pompano and I knew his day of crossing the Rainbow were near. He was tired of ighting Cancer and loosing his eyesight. He now can see clearly and can rest. Thank You Pompano Bill for an amazing 27 years. - Brad Casey: Dear Friend He was an amazing man with an incredible zest for life. - Richard Gray: Greater Fort Lauderdale CVB He was so much a part of our community. I have loved this man since the second time I met him [The irst time he did his groping thing]. We have had a wild ride. He ALWAYS looked-out for me and made sure I was getting my shots and doing my job. I remember one of his BIGGEST warnings about nightclubs was the smoke and how he got some sort of Cancer from it. He was a Trooper and loved my many, including myself. Una famiglia italiana e un dono di Dio. -Stephen R. Pompano Bill…You can rest now my friend. Miss you already Peanut Butter! -Mike Trottier: Co-worker and dear friend Don't be sad! Of course, we will miss you, Pompano Bill. But, what a life you lived! An example to all of us to seize the day and make the most of every situation, or so it seemed. Indeed, the place won't be the same without you, but it's immeasurably better because of you. I look forward to celebrating your life with the throngs who adored you. -Row lliescu: Equality Florida Sad to learn of the passing of Pompano Bill. A wonderful friend to so many of us in the LGBTQ community. I don't think I've ever seen Bill without a smile or his camera ready to take that perfect shot. He will be greatly missed by our community. Thank you for all the memories Pompano...Rest In Peace good friend. -Ken Evans: Our Fund I found myself driving to Pompanos Bills house today, and sitting in the car outside of his home. Pompano Bill (1926 – 2018) William "Bill" Calcaterra

By Peter Clark

Like so many other, I was deeply affected when I heard that Pompano Bill had passed away. At irst, I went into a deep silence and just wanted to be alone to collect my thoughts. A sense of calm overcame me as I thought that Bill had just ended a spectacular journey we call life on earth. Bill and I often talked about our community, politics and of course, gossip. One thing is certain, I came to trust him like a father. In our last conversation he shared with me the fact that he decided not to undergo Chemotherapy while in the hospital. I refused to consider that he was telling me his time had come. Denial, as you know, is one of the irst phases of dealing with grief. Ironically, as I checked my last email to him regarding Hotspots business, the subject line was “time to relax.” God knows, I did not want him to take it literally by going to his eternal resting place. William Calcaterra, aka Pompano Bill, was born on January 12thth, 1926 in Norway, Michigan. He had a normal childhood, however, as he matured, he realized that he was different. Back then the word gay wasn't

| Hotspots.LGBT

used, instead the word was “queer.” Growing up in such a small town of 3,728 people, he kept his difference suppressed. He graduated high school in June of 1944 and was immediately inducted into the Navy, attended Radio Operator School in Madison, Wisconsin and was assigned to a ship in the Paci ic Theatre. World War II ended and he returned to the U.S. While still on active duty and stationed in San Francisco he stumbled into a bar on Market Street, not realizing it was a bar frequented by homosexuals, and was invited out for cocktails at the Saint Francis Hotel and treated to a weekend of fun and luxury. He saw that gentleman again during the week. Although he said the experience was amazing, shortly afterwards he got his discharge papers and returned home, where he again went into suppressing his desires. A year later, with the GI Bill, he went to Ferris State College and then moved to Detroit and completed his education at the Detroit Institute of Technology. It was in Detroit that he really discovered gay life. While in Detroit he had his irst

relationship, which ended due to his partner being drafted for the Korean War. After graduating from college, he joined IBM (which Bill says stands for I've been moved) in 1951, where he stayed until retirement 36 years later in 1987. During his employment at IBM he made his way up to middle management and was transferred to many places throughout the country. Eventually, Bill had the good sense to move to Florida. After a few years he became bored and bought a camera. In 1992 he started his second career as a photographer and was published as Pompano Bill in Scoop Magazine. Since then he has worked for Outlook, Buzz, 411, Express, The Blade and, for the last dozen years or so he was very happy shooting exclusively for Hotspots Magazine. Over the years he has accumulated tens of thousands of pictures, which have become his life, he says they are like his friends. He had all his old photos organized in shoe boxes and digital images were stored on 2 computers. He often wondered what the stories were behind some of the people he captured on ilm when he looked back at them. As many of you know, Pompano Bill had a huge heart and donated much of his time to charities including Poverello, Tuesdays Angels, Broward House, The Pride Center and so many others. Scott Holland once asked Pompano Bill:

What are the bene its of living longer? Bill replied: “You can teach an old dog new tricks, outliving a few assholes, the ability to meet and enjoy younger people... especially those that like to hear about gay history I’ve experienced.”

A CELEBRATION OF LIFE

Many have asked if funeral or memorial services will be taking place. One of Bill's closest friends, Toni Barone, reminded me that he did not want anything special or grandiose after his passing. It is our understanding that a few family members will be arriving to discuss plans and we will announce the outcome of their decision the moment it happens. One thing is certain, if a celebration of life takes place, it will be one to remember! Now, I ind myself trying to ill yet, another hole in my heart…

A special thanks goes to Scott Holland for contributing the biographical content of this article

NYC's Top Five Promoter Expands to Florida

Entertainment and nightlife is forever changing. Shouldn't the way we interact with it be too? That was the question that Sasha was asked when we began discussing his modus operandi in regard to how to set up successful promotions. Since 2010, Sasha Seven Events has been quietly behind the scenes helping to market and promote some of the LGBTQ+ community's most diverse events. His interest in club culture had always been strong so when the opportunity to begin as an in-house promoter with a Saturday night weekly party at NYC's iconic venue The Ritz was offered he grabbed it and ran with it like a cheetah. Since then his brand has grown legs and has begun to travel the globe. Sasha is bringing The Score party from Washington's popular Districkt C every Friday to NYC staple the Monster, a 2 story complex with a capacity of 300 and *gasp* a dancefloor located in the heart of Hell's Kitchen. Here in Florida he's helping to promote Pride Ft Lauderdale on Feb 24, 2019 for what will be their biggest event yet. Another important aspect in his evolving business model is the ability to help recording artists and their audience connect with his weekly Saturday night radio show on G One Radio Show where he's selected dozens of the world's top rated circuit Dj/Producers such as Abel, Dani Toro, Tony Moran, GSP and even offering an elite roster of up and coming talents among them NYC's DJ Alex Brian and many more. Tune in every Saturday at 7 PM EST and be sure to contact

him if your fave dj's are not yet in the mix. In the summer he's got his hand in the promotion of landmark events like OMW (One Magical Weekend) which attracts thousands to its dancefloor, Utopia in Athens Greece and Xlsior on the island of Mykonos. In Puerto Rico the Hydro Caribbean has asked for his blessing as well to insure that they reach NYC metro NuYoricans to return home for the festival. After the Ritz closed he became one of the inhouse promoters for XL Nightclub NYC, where he ran a number of successful “nights” before the venue sold. A niche market within our niche was Habbibi an event for Gay men of Mideastern descent, which ran for 8+ years. In January he helps Arena Festival in Playa Del Carmen bring the heat to those escaping the blustery winter doldrums. In February he pitches in to work with the The Task Force who produce the “hot like fire” Winter Party. Throughout the spring he localizes and focuses on his backyard in the Northeast. You can find his stamp of approval on events from DC stretching as far north as Boston. Closer to home in June he's running on all pistons spreading himself out to assist with NYC Pride and a multitude of other philanthropic organizations, giving support to Non Profit orgs such as Spectrum who donate to benefactors such as Jersey Pride, Queens Pride and a host of other local organizations in need of the exposure and donations. You're invited to join in the fun. Circuit fans tune in to G One Radio for your favorite sounds. Djs, contact sashaseven.com. Promoters looking for opportunities contact us. See you on a dance floor soon!

Adora: Wow, Teddy, Did you see the blow-up over the retrospective at the Whitney for artist David Wojnarowicz?……His work is so passionate…he actually sewed his mouth shut to protest the official silence over the AIDs Crisis in the 1980's, so in a way I'm not surprised. Teddy: Yeah, David died of AID's back in 1992; he was a founding member of the AIDs activist group ACT-UP. So many people were dying, and really suffering. Nobody knew at first how it was being transmitted, or how to know if you were going to get sick. It was a really fear-based time…And the government just didn't seem to care. Adora: The creative community which is so LGBTQ, was hit hardest, so artists like David Wojnarowicz, Keith Haring and Robert Maplethorpe, not only got sick, they were surrounded by a whole community that was afflicted. People were afraid of LGBTQ people, there was little compassion at first: it was all fear. Teddy Behr: You have to see David Wojnarowicz's film 'A Fire In My Belly' to really get the sense of death and dying that overcame the Gay Community. It's a truly amazing film collage about the terror of the time and got censored out of a show in DC about 9 years ago…it's pretty intense. Act-Up adopted the slogan 'Silence = Death', and yeah, David actually sewed his mouth shut as a performative Hotspots.LGBT | 63

genre latino / Culturizate protest over the silence in media and government about the devastating death toll in the LGBTQ Community. Adora: I'll never forget the photo of him with his mouth sewn shut, or the movie, and the music and vocals by Diamond Galas. They're iconic images of what was going on then. Unfortunately, even though people aren't dying as they used to from HIV / AIDs, the demonstrators are right that AIDs isn't history: we now have an AIDs industry, with all sorts of very expensive maintenance treatments, but no cure…I wonder why no cure? Teddy Behr: Yeah, and Act-Up says we still don t have enough access to testing and treatment, and above all, education. Doesn't Dade County have the highest AIDs/HIV incidence in the USA?I get that people don t like to talk about it, but as they say in Act-Up: SILENCE =DEATH. Adora: Yes, and now we're also having a syphilis epidemic, and new strains of gonorrhea that require antibiotic drip, because they're resistant to older antibiotics. It's really dangerous out there: a doctor friend says the new PREP medication, which protects people against getting the virus has made people feel they don't need to practice protected/safer sex anymore. He says these things can mutate and change, and that we're fooling ourselves thinking we're out of danger. Teddy Behr: Mmmmm…for a while it was cool to use condoms, now, I think it's cool not to…but SAFE IS SWEET, it's caring, and it IS cool; people just have to get back to safe, for everybody's sake. 64

Michael Goodman as Cher By Scott Holland

A

few years ago, I just knew Michael Goodman from his hugely successful PR Company: Goodman Public Relations. Little did I know that the quiet, organized and professional businessman had an alternate personality as a Cher impersonator! It’s amazing how Michael transforms himself with lavish costumes, fabulous wigs, and great shoes to become Cher! As he is about to give 2 local performances at Winterfest White Party on October 26 and W Fort Lauderdale Night of 1000 Chers on October 27, I thought this was the appropriate time to sit down with Michael and get all the info on how he became Cher! When was the irst time you were in drag? I dabbled in drag for fun periodically from the mid 2000痴, but mostly on Halloween. However, when I became part of the Lips Fort Lauderdale family it blossomed. When was the irst time you did Cher? It happened nearly six years ago as I was invited to a Las Vegas style party where you

68 | Hotspots.LGBT

had to come as your favorite celebrity. I hired Diva (aka Thomas Mitchell) to create me as Cher, as that seemed the natural celebrity for me based on my facial features and my love for Cher. How did it go at the party? Everyone loved it and I was amazed that it was really me. The rest is history! Doing events at the Seminole Hard Rock involves securing exciting and talented performers for our guests to enjoy. One of my favorites is Michael Dean as Cher. We usually have trouble convincing guests that he is not really Cher, they demand a meet and greet! His show is fun and professional. Michael takes us down memory lane through the various phases of the talent that is Cher. Magic! Susan Renneisen, VP Community Affairs and Special Events Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood

When was the irst time you performed as Cher? Not long after that party I took the stage at Lips which gave me my wings. I love my Lips family and till this day I perform there periodically. How did you go about perfecting Cher? I have been a huge Cher fan since I was a kid and followed every word and move she ever made. I take it very seriously. Plus, I am lucky to live in South Florida where there are so many great entertainers who I watched and learned from. When was the irst time you got paid to be Cher? My irst paid gig was a Bridal Expo, and then my life changed when I met a great performer and make-up guru Kevin Wiley and got hired by Dan Gore as a cast member of Oscar痴 Cabaret in Palm Springs which I enjoyed for two years. What has been your favorite Gig so far? Working as Cher at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is amazing as they give me the opportunity to do a full show (video, lights, dancers and great sound). The production is what I am all about. I love when I can add choreography and costume changes to give the full Cher effect!

Have you met Cher? I had the pleasure of meeting Cher twice, but my irst encounter was the most memorable, which landed me backstage at the American Music Awards during her irst live performance of 釘elieve. What does the future hold for your second career as Cher?

Michael Dean is a consummate professional. He is part of a niche business and its very important to hire not only talented performers of his caliber but also ones that can meet/greet and be relevant with your special guests. He is her and he delivers an authentic portrayal of her and also is extremely professional for your extreme VIPs. Dan Gore, Producer Oscar’s Cabaret

I want to continue to perform with more elaborate costumes and even bigger productions. I would love to take the stage here more and abroad so there is de initely more to come! To ind out more about Michael Dean as Cher or to book him, go to: MichaelDeanasCher.com Hotspots.LGBT | 69

Tony Award Winning Singing Actor Levi Kreis Performs A Benefit For ArtsUnited At Sunshine Cathedral

Venetian Arts Society and RBC Wealth Management present "An Intimate Evening with Levi Kreis" a benefit performance for ArtsUnited. The TONY Award winning Actor/Singer will appear in concert on Saturday, October 27 at 8 p.m. at the Sunshine Cathedral, 1480 SW 9th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315. Levi won the 2010 TONY Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical when his experience as a recording artist, actor, and pianist combined to originate the role of Jerry Lee Lewis in Broadway's TONY nominated musical “Million Dollar Quartet.” Other notable acting credits include Broadway's TONY nominated revival of “Violet,” the national tour of “Rent,” “Smokey Joe's Café,” “Pump Boys & Dinettes,” and the films, “Frailty,” “Don't Let Go,” “Slip Tumble and Slide,” “A Very Sordid Wedding,” and “The Divide.” Executive Director of the Venetian Arts Society (VAS), William Riddle, said that Levi Kreis is a singer-songwriter and actor

whose mesmerizing live performances are often described as Harry Connick Jr. meets Hugh Jackman. “His piano is an appendage that requires no effort.” Riddle said. “His southern humor will charm you and his vulnerability will move you. Years of exuberant reviews have dubbed Kreis the consummate performer and he “learned from the best!” Venetian Arts Society is thrilled to be partnering with ArtsUnited for a benefit to their non-profit organization. ArtsUnited focuses on showcasing the art of the LGBTQ community in all genres of the arts, including visual art, music, theatre, film and fashion. Levi Kreis is an artist well-versed in musical theater, pop and country singing styles. An East Tennessee native, Levi spent his youth learning everything he knows from Little Miss Dynamite, Brenda Lee. Traveling on her tour bus and studying her genius on stage and off, Kreis adopted Lee's strong work ethic and classy reputation. But it was Brenda's ability to have an audience in the palm of her hand that Kreis sought to make his own. By all accounts, Kreis succeeded. To this day Brenda Lee confesses, “I taught him everything he knows!” His southern humor will charm you. His vulnerability will move you. Years of exuberant reviews have dubbed Kreis the consummate performer. His charismatic live performances are his number one. His musicianship is effortless. Kreis said that writing the songs was therapeutic. “I'm not liberated from the past, but I've learned that willingness is all it takes for a jaded heart to crack open.” Kickstarter backers and long-time fans receiving advanced copies of “Liberated” are unanimous in their opinion that this new body of work is Levi's best work to date. "An Intimate Evening with Levi Kreis" performance on Saturday, October 27 will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35, general admission and is $50 which includes a meet and greet with Levi after the performance. This performance is made possible in part through the generous support of Venetian Arts Society, RBC Wealth Management, Nova Southeastern University, John Knox Village, Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitor's Bureau (Hello Sunny), Your Office, HotSpots Media Group and Mark'sList! GAVIN GRIMM

TEEN TRANSGENDER ACTIVIST BORN: MAY 4, 1999

Gavin Grimm was thrust into the national spotlight in 2014 as a transgender high school student, when he sued for the right to use the boys' restroom in his Virginia public high school. Born female, Grimm struggled with his sexual identity from an early age. At 15, he was diagnosed with severe gender dysphoria and began medical treatment. With his high school's permission, he began using the boys' restroom in his sophomore year. He told The Washington Post, “It just seemed like the natural progression of things.” Grimm used the boys' restroom without issue for nearly two months. Then, following transphobic complaints from parents and residents, the high school and the Gloucester County School Board voted to ban Grimm from using the bathroom matching his gender identity. At a subsequent school board meeting, Grimm endured insults, threats and inflammatory rhetoric. The board voted to segregate him by relegating his bathroom use to the nurse's restroom or to a makeshift restroom meant only for him. After learning of Grimm's plight, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a federal lawsuit on his behalf, contending that the school board's restriction of his bathroom use was unconstitutional. They argued that the school's policy violated Title IX laws prohibiting sex discrimination under the U.S. Education Amendments of 1972. The lower courts dismissed the case. In 2016 the U.S. Court of Appeals overturned the lower

“I'm just Gavin. I have frustrations, stress, hopes, and dreams like millions of other young people in America. And like everyone else, sometimes I have to use the restroom. It's not political. It's just life.” courts' decision in Grimm's favor. The Gloucester County School Board then petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case. The request was rejected. Throughout the appeals and during his graduation from Gloucester High School in June 2017, Grimm remained barred from the boys' restroom. In 2018 the U.S. District Court declared that the school violated the rights of transgender students by excluding them from the bathroom consistent with their gender identity. Grimm has received numerous awards. In 2017 TIME magazine honored him on its list of “100 Most Influential People.” Major news outlets, including as The New York Times and The Washington Post, have reported his story. Grimm is working toward his college degree and advocates for transgender equality.

THE 50 SENATORS WHO VOTED TO CONFIRM BRETT KAVANAUGH

I

f you've ever wanted to commit sexual assault, now is your chance. I mean, has there ever been a better time, especially for men assaulting women? We are in the midst of the Kavanaugh Window where no accusation of sexual assault, no matter how credible, will be believed. After all, any woman accusing any man, especially any powerful man, will just be accused of jumping on the #MeToo bandwagon. Sexual assault is shame-inducing and demoralizing all on its own, but if you can make the experience extra embarrassing then that makes it even less likely to be reported at all! Not that you have to worry, because people won't believe her even if she does report. You could do something really crazy like ask her, “Who has put pubic hair on my Coke [can]?” Or tell her that you want to rub her [expletive] with a falafel. Shout out to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and celebrity “news” host Bill O'Reilly who were accused of those very things respectively. And terrible things happened to them like (checks list) getting confirmed to the Supreme Court and continuing to be paid outlandish sums for pretending to be a journalist. Harsh! Or maybe you committed a smidge or two of sexual assault in your past, say, as a young child of 17 who couldn't have possibly known that trying to make sex with a girl who didn't want to make sex with you was in any way wrong. Well, you're in luck, too, because attempted rape doesn't count if you were in high school.

OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI

(It's also super helpful to be white and rich.) Now, if you're a man and you want to sexually assault other males, well, that is not recommended, but who knows? Maybe sexual assault tide raises all sexual assault boats. Then again, some men tend to take that sort of thing marginally more seriously, or at least are a lot less concerned about punishing a homo than, you know, a “normal” guy who rapes. If I seem angry, then sorry, but not sorry BECAUSE I AM ANGRY AND YES I AM YELLING. With Brett Kavanaugh confirmed to the Supreme Court, where he and Clarence Thomas can drink all the Cokes they want as they vote to take away a woman's right to make decisions about her own body, by a president who has himself been accused of sexual assault and harassment many times over and who was caught on tape bragging about grabbing women “by the pussy,” we are saying to women and men who have been sexually assaulted, “You do not matter. We do not see you, we do not hear you, we do not care.” #HimToo is trending on Twitter. The idea is that men are the real victims here. Men have to live in constant fear that they will be falsely accused. In reality, men are much more likely to be sexually assaulted themselves than falsely accused. The idea that women make this stuff up for attention is insane. But it's a lot easier to believe that than to actually

But it's a lot easier to believe that than to actually address America's systemic rape culture problem. address America's systemic rape culture problem. Thankfully if you search for #HimToo on Twitter you find mostly Tweets that begin “This is my son” with pictures of people who are, in fact, not the users' sons, in order to mock a post purportedly by a mother who Tweeted a picture of her son in a sailor suit and claimed that “he won't go on solo dates due to the current climate of false sexual accusations by radical feminists with an axe to grind. I VOTE.” The responses are truly hilarious. And, man, I need to laugh because I feel like breaking something. But I can't come up with anything worth breaking compared to democracy. America is broken. And as far as I can tell, this break isn't going to ever fully heal. I'm not saying America will never walk again. But if we ever get back on our feet, we will

always have a noticeable limp. We will always have a reminder of what happened when we were careless. When we were cruel. When we didn't #BelieveWomen. When we didn't #BelieveSurvivors. When we went home with the drunkest guy at the party — the guy who'd spent the night boasting about sexual assault, making fun of disabled people, praising Nazis, and gambling with other people's money — handed him the keys and said, “I'll sleep while you drive.” Wake. Up. And. Vote. Everything and everyone depends on it.

HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti

Bad Habits That Make You Fat!

O

n the average, most guys gain between one and two pounds per year. While this might not sound alarming, think about the 10-20 pounds you could pack on over a decade! Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise program can certainly help you win the battle of the bulge with all its harmful ramifications. Yet there are certain bad habits that you need to avoid if you want to stick to a healthy weight. Do any of these behaviors sound familiar? Skipping breakfast is a recipe for slowing down your metabolism and packing on the pounds. You may not feel hungry in the morning, too rushed and busy for a healthy breakfast, but you'll pay a heavy price. Depriving yourself of this first important meal will cause your energy level to sag and sink early in the day. In addition, your body, already

in a catabolic state, begins to store fat more readily. Something, anything in the morning is better than nothing. Ideally, shoot for a breakfast that is 3- parts low glycemic index complex carbs, 2 parts protein, and one- part unsaturated fat. Whole grain cereals and English muffins with almond butter, fresh fruit, turkey sausage or chicken breast and Greek

yogurt are wise and delicious choices. Eating a heavy supper too close to bedtime will slow digestion and hamper your sleep. Make sure your last meal of the day is about 2 hours before you retire. Avoid fried foods with their excess calories that you'll never burn off. Instead try steamed, grilled or baked meals for lunch and supper. Spicy foods may spike your metabolism, but you should avoid

them at night since they're liable to cause indigestion or acid reflux. As for carbohydrates, it's best to consume these earlier in the day when you've got the time to burn them off working out and running errands. Eating dessert at night is one guilty pleasure that can get you into trouble quickly.

The flour and sugar in cookies, cakes, and pies are transformed into fat cells overnight as you hit the sack. If you've got to have a sweet treat before bed, try fresh fruit in moderation or a filling fruit smoothie. Drinking caffeinated beverages or alcohol can have a negative effect on your sleep and add unwanted calories in your diet. Initially a cup of coffee may give you a lift and a cocktail may relax you, but excessive amounts of caffeine can wreak havoc on sleep patterns and alcohol contains useless extra calories that are turned to fat easily and rapidly. Instead try a cup of warm milk or herbal tea, or a natural fruit smoothie in the evening before retiring. Besides the bad habits mentioned above, here are a few more that you need to keep in check. Grazing while watching television is a form of mindless eating that can result in lots of extra pounds quickly. Always measure out portions when you're snacking and never eat directly out of bags or containers.

The Frivolist By Mikey Rox

Magnificent Foliage 6 Get-Up-and-Go Ways to Experience Fall's Magnificent Foliage Cross-country rail trip When I read about how blogger Derek Low booked himself a cross-country Amtrak trip from San Francisco to New York for $187, I was skeptical. So I reached out to Low – who now helps people like you and me book their own excursions for a $49 consulting fee (he basically does all the work for you) – and it's legit, folks. My trip, which departed October 1 from New York's Penn Station, cost about $450 total with overnight stops in Chicago, Denver, and Salt Lake City along the way. You can still take the 3,400-mile journey for around $200 – where you'll see the brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows of fall from coast to coast from your cozy coach seat (how many people can say they've done that?) – but the lower price is dependent on when you're traveling and includes no stopovers. I personally recommend spending the extra cash to get off the train and spend a couple days in the scheduled cities. Steamworks Baths in Chicago is a great place to unwind after the first 18-hour leg.

1

Experience Mother Nature's majesty with these make-aweekend-out-of-it ways to view stunning displays of fall foliage like never before.

CityPASS Aside from being one of the best ways for new and local tourists of an area to enjoy that destination's main attractions, CityPASS also provides a unique way to encounter exceptional autumn vistas. For instance, you can elevator up to Top of the Rock Observation Deck in midtown Manhattan to peer out over Central Park – the pinnacle of municipal foliage – as burnt color covers the entirety of the green space's 51 blocks. CityPASS is available in a dozen other cities throughout North America, most of which include opportunities to visit their tallest structures for 360-degree views.

2

LGBTQ camps and wooded resorts If camping is up your alley, plan a trip to one of the many LGBTQ-focused or genderexclusive grounds where you can pitch a tent (literally and figuratively) or rent a cabin for a weekend in the great outdoors. There are 19 states across America that offer a gay camping experience, information for which is available on GayCampingUSA.com, where you can make friends over fires, participate in traditional camp activities, and take leisurely hikes around the campuses or nearby trails to get up close and personal with fall foliage's last hurrah.

3

Helicopter and hot-air balloon rides If you're a risk taker and adventure lover, consider lifting off to cover grand expanses of changing leaves via helicopter or hot-air balloon. While many areas (especially those in proximity to major cities) offer helicopter rides, hot-air balloon rides are scarcer, but you can find both – and save money – by searching Groupon and other daily-deal sites wherever you are. You may have to drive a bit to get to the launch locations – hot-air balloons are usually in rural areas – but it'll be worth the road trip and photo memories that'll awe all your followers on Instagram.

4

Hiking state and national parks Head into any of the state and national parks (by car or on foot) that include forestland in a seasonal climate to surround yourself with reach-out-andtouch-it foliage. If you're crafty, take some of it home with you and DIY a project like leaf napkin rings for your Thanksgiving tablescape, an autumnal welcome sign for your front door, or 28 other fun ideas from 'Country Livings “30 Gorgeous Ways to Craft Fall Leaves.” Great for neighborly gifting, too.

5

Road trip

6

My boyfriend and I are big on road trips, especially in the fall, because we're both keen on local outdoor festivals, fresh markets and orchards, and anything made from harvest fruits like apple and pumpkin. Recently we spent a weekend discovering south Jersey – because who knew it was so quaint and rural? – driving from cute town to even cuter town (you'll absolutely love Mullica Hill), popping into small shops, tasting beers at craft breweries, eating our weight in donuts from Amish markets, attending a rodeo, and joining festivities, like the Smooch-a-Pooch event we happened upon at the Human Village Brewing Co. in Pitman, N.J., to save the lives of three puppies with holes in the hearts. Of course we smooched all the pooches and enjoyed our drives on county back roads where the trees were just on the cusp of changing. Doesn't get more romantic than that.

“I personally recommend spending the extra cash to get off the train and spend a couple days in the scheduled cities. Steamworks Baths in Chicago is a great place to unwind after the first 18-hour leg.”

HOT ADVICE By Andreus Quinones

Three s A Crowd Dear Andreus, I have dear friends, and they are a couple. Recently one of them made advances towards me and I didn't know how to react. In all honesty, I find him so f*cking hot, but I felt bad even listening to naughty things he said in his advances. His partner is my friend, and though we are not super close, I don't know what to do. Part of me wants to tell my friend out of loyalty. The other part of me wants to pounce on him and just go for it. I am so torn… Sincerely, Naughty Thoughts Dear Naughty Thoughts, Whether or not you tell your friend that his boyfriend made advances towards you, is your prerogative. But put yourself in your friend's shoes. Would you want any of your friends doing anything with your boyfriend? Here you have to be the adult. Put his boyfriend in his place. Tell him that it is inappropriate, and that you have respect for you friend. I myself, always abide by something called the “Friend-Code.” I have established with my friends that we do not date, sleep with, or flirt with each other's boyfriends, current interests, or exes. Acting on something like this can't turn out well. Okay, so you might get the f*ck of your life, but is it worth it at the expense of a friendship? It's up to you to either RIDE or RUN!! Dear Andreus, Recently on a night out on the drive, my boyfriend and I both got kinda drunk. We met a really hot guy, and for the first time ever, we

126 | Hotspots.LGBT

took someone home. It was great! The sex was amazing and I had a lot of fun. The next day, after the guy left, my boyfriend told me that he was uncomfortable and that he never wants to do that again. Now the problem, is that I liked it, and I want to do it again. I don't want my boyfriend to feel as if I am not into him anymore or anything like that, I just like the thrill of the new experience. I don't wanna do it all the time, just every now and then. But he told me that he only wants sex to be between us. How can I address this without causing waves? Sincerely, Three's A Crowd Dear Three's A Crowd, Well, clearly, Pandora's Box has already been opened. Now you have to deal with the TRUTH. I know that you say that everything is fine with you and your boyfriend, but reaching outside is usually a sign that either something is lacking, or that you maybe have gotten bored. How much do you love him? What more do you want in your sex life? Is there anything that you can change so spice things up? Honestly, if you two can come to a way to improve your own sex life without stepping out or involving another party, from the sounds of it, that is the best solution. Clearly this guy loves you, and the idea of sharing you with someone else is too much. So I would leave things as they are, don't poke the bear. Because pushing something as delicate at this, can turn a wave into a tsunami. And we all know how destructive those are.
