Some of you may miss her ’90s “Queen of Nice,” but in these times of social and political strife, we’re looking for a Battle Lesbian who’ll come in, kick ass, and take names. That’s Rosie.

Disney’s Lady and the Tramp remake is in production and this good news just made us bark for joy: Hidden Figures and Moonlight star Janelle

Meanwhile Justin Theroux is the voice of Tramp, and the supporting voice cast includes Thomas Mann, Kiersey Clemons, Benedict Wong, Ashley Jensen and Yvette Nicole Brown. Look for this one to help launch Disney’s home streaming service sometime near Christmas of 2019.

TRANSPHOBIA

OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI

B

eing in middle school is tough. Your body is going through often mortifying changes: acne, body hair, growth spurts. Your hormones are raging. Kids are often relentlessly cruel to each other. You aren't old enough to drive. Your parents are hopelessly lame. Not to mention the active shooter drills you have to go through on a routine basis because the U.S. can't get its shit together when it comes to guns. It's revolting that protecting children from being slaughtered in math class is a partisan issue in this country and that Republicans are on the side of the guns. But that's where we are. Also a partisan issue in this country is how, or whether, to protect transgender students. (Spoiler alert: Republicans are not on the side of the students. Again.) You might remember that the Obama administration issued guidelines to schools that said, essentially, “Hey, transgender students are human beings so treat them accordingly. In many schools this wasn't a big deal. And by big deal, I mean it wasn't much of an adjustment. It was, however, a big deal for trans students. I mean, man, if the President of the United States had advocated for the protection of LGBTQ students when I was in high school that would have meant the world to me. It would have made a lot of LGBTQ kids feel less alone and also feel a little safer. However, the guidance led to a bit of scrambling in some more conservatives places

68 | Hotspots.LGBT

in the country where treating trans kids as human was a very foreign concept. Much hand-wringing was done over where trans kids should pee or change for gym. And then came the Trump administration. And the guidelines for protecting trans students were scrapped. Trans kids went from a president who cared about them to one who was actively hostile. And so the issue of where trans kids should pee or change was left up to individual schools to figure out however they wanted. And some schools are doing a really bad job. Case in point: what happened at a Stafford County middle school in Virginia on Sept. 28. On that day the school had an active shooter drill during which the teachers are charged with making sure students are sheltered in a designated area depending on where they are in the building. One of the places of safety at this middle school was the locker room. The boys went into the boys' locker room and the girls went into the girls' locker room. Except for one girl in particular who wasn't allowed in either locker room because she is transgender. According to multiple reports, the teachers didn't know what to do with her and, after much debate, had the girl sit outside in the hallway, completely exposed to the attack that her other classmates were practicing how to survive.

And it won't get better Now, of course, it was until we have elected only just a drill. It's not like If you're thinking of officials in power who see she was exposed to any sitting this election out, LGBTQ youth as human real danger, right? Well, I urge you to think of beings. One of the best yes, technically. But the that girl sitting things you can do for very point of a drill is to alone in the hallway... LGBTQ people is to vote. practice what you will do Make a plan to vote on in the event of a real threat. Nov. 6. Spend some time And what was researching the candidates. Since hostility to communicated to this young girl was, LGBTQ people is part of the Republican essentially, “You're on your own.” platform, voting for Democrats is pretty much Now, you don't need guidance from the a no brainer, but knowing who you're voting federal government to tell you that there is no for when it comes to judges and other nonsuch thing as expendable children. But when partisan offices is also important. A good guidance that acknowledges that trans resource is vote411.org. students exist and affirms their right to be If you're thinking of sitting this election out, protected is issued only to be taken away, that I urge you to think of that girl sitting alone in is a pretty strong signal to trans students and the hallway, imaginary bullets flying. Vote like the people who are supposed to teach, protect her life depends on it. Because it does. and learn with them that they are worthless. GLSEN, an organization that works for safe and inclusive schools for LGBTQ students, just released its 2017 National School Climate D'Anne Witkowski is a poet, writer, and Survey, which shows that “victimization of comedian living in Michigan with her wife and LGBTQ youth is not decreasing at rates son. Your Most Successful Workouts: 5 Easy Steps

E

very 3-4 months you should take some time out to evaluate your workouts. Strip down, weigh yourself, take your measurements, face the mirror and be honest. Whether you're pleased with the results, or realize you've got work to do, forge ahead realizing you've got the potential to improve and redefine not only that physique, but your overall health as well! Here are five steps that are sure to produce superlative results. Firstly, every fitness routine should follow a three-fold approach: weight training, cardio-vascular training, and good nutrition. Neglect any one of these and your success will be compromised. You can't preserve muscle tissue and build new muscle without doing resistance training. Hit the weights at least 2 to 3 times a week, if not more. Doing regular cardio (3 to 4 times per week for 30 – 45 minutes) is the best way to improve the longevity of your cardio-vascular

system. This will also rev up your metabolism and help you burn fat. Finally, you can lift tons of weights and run miles of cardio, but unless you eat wisely, all your hard work in the gym will yield diminished returns. Consume a hearty breakfast and eat less at night; eat

smaller meals (5 – 6) every 2 to 3 hours throughout the day as opposed to 1 or 2 monster feedings; opt for high protein meals with healthy complex carbs, and less than 30 grams of fat per day.

shoulder press, deadlift) and three or four assistance lifts (curls, side raises, triceps push-downs, etc.) in order to take advantage of hormonal surges of testosterone and human growth hormone. With each press, lift, or raise, maintain perfect form. Fifthly, make sure to have fun and enjoy yourself! When you're in the gym, vary your routine by trying new weight training exercises, jump on board new cardio machines, sign up for novel classes‌anything, just keep it exciting and challenging. On days off from the gym, take your activities to the great outdoors by walking, swimming, or roller-blading.

Secondly, free weights are your best bet for building muscle. A barbell and a rack of dumbbells are all you need for an effective resistance training workout. Remember, nothing beats the squat, bench press, deadlift, and shoulder press with a barbell or dumbbells for building overall mass and strength. Thirdly, take time to journal your workouts. Make a note of how much cardio you perform at each session. List exercises, sets, repetitions and the outcome of each weight training session. Be consistent and honest with your documentation and strive to improve at least a little with each workout.

Fourthly, never over-train and always maintain impeccable lifting form with each exercise. Keep workouts to under an hour of one or two intense lifts (squat, bench press,

Part of this memo argued in favor of a legal definition of sex, with the New York Times citing a quote from the memo, reading “Sex means a person's status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth.” If such a statement would appear in just one of our nation's laws - or even in one of their amendments - the floodgates of legalized discrimination for the Transgender, Intergender, and Gender Queer communities would open, with unimaginable consequences. When someone comes out and begins the journey to their authentic gender, there are many milestones and turning points. A necessary step in transition is when a TransPerson holds their new state ID in their hands after having their gender legally changed. It is a tangible and physical reminder that they belong to a society whose government protects them, and whose law enforcement officers look out for them. ID cards can be felt, held in a person's hands, and shown to friends. School ID's, state ID's, passports and birth certificates are among a person's most important documents, they validate and verify identity. For many transgender individuals that simple letter “F” or “M” is something they have spent years of their lives in conflict with; being discriminated against, 86 | Hotspots.LGBT

By Monica Prata invalidated and excluded based on a solitary character on a piece of plastic. The significance we give to the concept of gender and what it means is something to discuss but that's a different conversation for a different day. Today, we have Transpeople fighting for a basic right, the right to be seen and the right to be recognized as who they know themselves to be. Ignoring the existence of transgender individuals goes against an unbroken line of court decisions in this country. With the proposed policy the administration reveals yet again that it does not care about science and will ignore it when convenient. Members of the Trans community pay tax, serve jury duty, vote, and are required to abide by the law just like any other citizen of the United States. However, under a Trump administration, they would be barred from correctly identifying themselves to the government that profits from their tax dollars, and whose laws are supposed to, but do not currently, protect them. Many people carry the supposition that protecting Transgender Children who attend

public high schools and middle schools is negligible because it could “just be phase.” The age of transition, however, is getting younger and younger. More and more High School and college-aged clients are seeking the help of NouveauShe, which offers services to help Transwomen through social and medical aspects of transition. More parents and students are reaching out in order to garner support for those who are questioning their gender identity. During the past 5 years alone, NouveauShe has seen the average age of its advisees drop from midfifties to late-thirties. It appears that the moment the Transgender and non-conforming community experiences a brief moment of relief, finally receiving some (not even all) of their much deserved rights as citizens, our administration picks at the scab, inflicting more pain, anxiety and frustrating on an already marginalized population. The bottom line is that many Transpeople die by suicide, many of which are adolescents. We must remember that this memo was circulated about a law that would directly affect educational institutions, which means that it would directly affect our children. For every Transboy or Transgirl who is allowed to use the bathroom of their gender, or who is allowed to change in the locker room of their choice, there is another who is required to use the locker room of the opposite gender, and change clothing in front of a crowd that bullies them and inflicts physical and emotional harm on them. Having a legal definition of sex and gender would lead to the latter, causing an end to gender-neutral restrooms in our schools, an end to locker room and dormitory choice, and an increase of bullying. This administration is turning its back on a community that seems to get bigger and younger by the minute, not by the year or decade. The Times also stated that “any dispute about a person's gender would have to be clarified by genetic testing.” Before I start to debate gender, I would like to say that there have been multitudes of governments before that have forced a certain population to undergo scientific tests and experiments - most, if not all, of these governments have faded into the sands of time due to their

abhorrent human rights violations. No government has the right to subject its citizens to a biological test without their consent. Furthermore, there are many instances in the past where gender and sex has been tampered with, or decided upon, by an assumedly “moreknowledgeable” third party. Hospitals used to require a certain penis length before designating an “M” next to gender on a birth certificate. John T Money was the famous experimental doctor who so crudely stated, “for plastic surgeons, it's easier to dig a hole than build a pole,” many children with XY chromosomes whose genitalia was underdeveloped were horribly mutilated under his medical supervision. To this day, there are survivors of John Money's malicious practices, who had someone else decide not only how they must identify, but how their body must look. We must return to the simple fact that if you leave genitalia alone, disregard a child's chromosomes, and allow an individual to develop without arbitrary societal restriction, they will eventually be able to tell you themselves the gender to which they belong.

“Ignoring the existence of transgender individuals goes against an unbroken line of court decisions in this country.” For some reason, the following statement is always regarded as incredibly profound, but I think it remains rather simple: the best society is a society that provides as many paths as possible for as many different communities to flourish. It has been shown time and time again, medically, psychologically, and sociologically that the best and healthiest way for a Trans-individual to flourish is to allow them to exist in their stated gender. Why not open the floodgates in the other direction? Why not allow a community to legally define themselves, instead of posing a constricting definition upon them?
