Brunch Expands to Saturdays @ R HOUSE By Scott Holland

42

R House Brunch started their now infamous Sunday Brunch about 4 years ago. I have been there and enjoyed the delicious food, the bottomless mimosas, and the fantastic show. As a matter of fact I blame the mimosas on a shopping spree I did at the Miami Downtown target after getting out of brunch one Sunday afternoon‌LOL!! It had been in my plans to do a feature on R House in the near future

| Hotspots.LGBT

and then I heard they were expanding to a Saturday brunch and I thought that this would be the perfect time to sit down with owners and life partners Rocco Carulli and Owen Bale and Hostess and producer Athena Dion.

ROCCO & OWEN

What made you decide to start a Drag Brunch in Wynwood?

We were inspired by the drag brunches of

How did you pick the name of your restaurant?

The name of the restaurant is short for Rocco’s House. Rocco has always loved to host dinner parties and entertain guests, and so it made sense for them to channel his love of entertaining into a cozy venue offering amazing hospitality, so that everyone could experience the fun of dining ‘at Rocco’s house’.

How did you pick the menu?

Rocco’s background is as a fine dining chef, so we always wanted our brunch to be known for great food as well as great entertainment. The menu includes Rocco’s take on a lot of brunch classics. Our personal favorites are the Cayenne

Fried Chicken or for the sweeter tooth the French Toast Slab which we serve with dollops of whipped cream and strawberries. We also wanted to encourage a sense of abundance and indulgence, so the menu has become famous for the unlimited food packages and bottomless mimosas and sangria that really help us get the brunch party started.

Are you excited about expanding the Brunch to Saturdays?

Yes! The whole R House team is so exctied! We have been swept away by the sense of joy and celebration that is so often in the air at R House Drag Brunch. It’s an amazing combination of food, drink, entertainment, laughter and dancing that we haven’t experienced in many other venues. Guests always leave wanting more, and so we are expanding to Saturdays to keep up with demand. Saturday guests will experience new cast members drawn from the top tier of Miami drag performers, new bottomless cocktail options, new menu specials, and the same incredible party atmosphere that we have become known for but without the worry of having to go to work the next day after indulging in all those mimosas!

ATHENA

How did you become involved with the R House Brunch?

Brunch at R House Started about 3 1/2 years ago and at that time it was only once a month. I was invited as a member of the monthly cast to perform. It’s cool to see how it has evolved since the beginning. For example, we use to do the entire show outside, now I think about that and wonder how we ever survived the heat while performing 3 numbers at the height of noon, but we sure did and enjoyed it as well. Since then I also took on the role as Show Producer and we moved the show to twice a month and then ultimately every single Sunday!! It has been one of the most rewarding projects I have worked on and definitely a team effort. The owners, Rocco and Owen, are so welcoming and accommodating with my ideas and we all

Provincetown MA where Rocco had owned a restaurant business for 13 years, before relocating to Miami to open R House. Rocco had always wanted to host a drag brunch of my own, so once R House was established in Wynwood, we held our first drag brunch as a one-off event for Rocco’s 50thbirthday in 2015. The response from customers was so positive that we decided to make the brunch a monthly event. When Athena Dion became the brunch’s permanent hostess, things really took off – we made the brunch bi-weekly, then weekly and now we are ready to hit Saturdays!

have a common love for the show and its growth!

When did you become hostess?

Funny story, we originally had another host of the monthly brunch and one particular Sunday there was a miscommunication between her and the show coordinator in regards to her not being able to work on that day. So since we had no host I was called to step up to the plate and host the show … and the rest is history. Personally I love hosting more than anything. It’s my favorite part about what I do, because I actually get to know my audience and set the tone and energy for the rest of the show. I’m proud to say our audience and patrons are from all walks of life. Gay,

club show because there is no stage or focal point of the show. The entertainer has to be able to work an entire restaurant and patio and still make sure every patron gets the fabulous show experience. It’s tricky to keep that in mind while performing but the girls that execute that successfully end up in the cast rotation. Also personality and character have a lot to do with it, ultimately the audience is always the deciding factor when it comes to trying out new talent, they will always let you know who’s a keeper.

Are you excited about expanding the Brunch to Saturdays?

YES!!!! the reason we are expanding is because the restaurant has been receiving so man requests for a Saturday show. So we listen to our patrons and are giving them what they want. Furthermore, I love the idea of shows earlier in the day, for me as an entertainer it means I can get home and in bed at a decent hour, and for the patrons, they get to experience the beauty of drag without having to necessarily go to a nightclub. We get tons of families, with kids, grandparents, and relatives from out of town. Its great that we have a platform to share this part of our community to so many people who have never seen it before, at a comfortable time and place, and with bottomless mimosas too!!

How will the show differ on Saturdays from Sundays? Straight, young, old, single, families, etc… so it’s very important when dealing with such an audience to set a fun inclusive tone, where everyone feels comfortable with their neighbor and the common goal is to have a good time, eat good food, and enjoy a fabulous show! And my job is to set that tone!

How do you decide on who will be in the show/the cast?

44

One thing I think is very important is to keep a diverse and rotating cast. We do have some regular girls that have been with us since the beginning, but every Sunday is guaranteed to be a different cast of entertainment. I like to cast the most entertaining girls I can find. R House Drag Brunch is different than a regular night| Hotspots.LGBT

We are starting with only one seating which will start at 1:30 pm and will carry on into our legendary Saturday afternoon Happy Hour! The show itself will be similar to Sundays as far as the number of entertainers and the quality of show. I am having an open casting call on November 11 to find some new fresh talent to incorporate on Saturdays as well. Basically looking for something that we haven’t seen yet that the brunch audience would enjoy! So definitely some new faces and a fresh new take on brunch! Saturday Brunch at R House (2727 NW 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33127) starts on November 17 and then continues every Saturday thereafter. To make reservations for Saturday, or Sunday, call (305) 576-0201.

Entertainment and Dick Clark productions will present audiences across the country with many surprises from the most respected show in the dance community and promises to be an unforgettable night of dance by some of the world's most talented performers up-close-and-personal, boldly transporting the small screen experience, enjoyed by millions, to the stage. It was a pleasure to sit down with the only man to make it to the top 4, Slavik Pustovoytov, for this Hotspots Exclusive interview:

should come out to see? First of all we take every favorite number from season 15 and put it all together in this 2 hour spectacle that is amazing. There is a lot that went into this process, and it's a super high energy show that I think everyone will love!

At what age did you start dancing? I started dancing when I was 10 years old. It started after I saw Michael Jackson and tried to do the “Moonwalk. My mom then asked me if I wanted to take dancing lessons and I did. The more I danced, the more I loved it and I quickly got serious about it.

What was your first professional/paid gig? There was a dance battle back in Ukraine and I entered. I won, and I got prize money for that.

When did you decide Dance was going to be your future? After I moved to the United States when I was 13 years old. I never thought about college as dancing was in my soul.

Who is your mentor in dance and why? "Fik-Shun" Stegall the winner of SYTYCD Season 10. I remember seeing his videos and I totally looked up to him. When I moved to Vegas I met him, and we have become really close friends and he has been mentoring me.

Slavik Pustovoytov

What made you decide to audition for SYTYCD? It was "Fik-Shun" who convinced me to audition. I was going to be in LA when they were auditioning so I thought why not.

Is the academy as hard as it looks? It ridiculously hard. It's really the mental stress as every day you are thinking about if you are going to get cut or make it through.

How did it feel to make the top 10? It was a bitter sweet feeling as it came down to myself and my friend Kyle. I was so happy I mad it, but I was very sad my friend didn't make it. I really wanted both of us to make it. There was so much emotion going through my body, I couldn't fathom what was going on.

Slow Burn Theatre Company Stages “Hedwig and The Angry Inch” Slow Burn Theatre Company and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts follow their hit stagings of rock musicals Spring Awakening and Rock of Ages with Hedwig and the Angry Inch starring Carbonell Award winners Dominique Scott and Mallory K. Newbro in the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Thursday, November 8–Sunday, November 25. The musical then moves to the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center for performances Thursday, November 29 – Sunday, December 2. With music and lyrics by Stephen Trask to a book by John Cameron Mitchell, Hedwig and the Angry Inch won the 2014 Tony Award-winner for Best Musical Revival and has been labeled “the best rock musical ever!” by Rolling Stone magazine. The cult classic is told through of one of the most unique characters to ever hit the stage: Hanschel, a “slip of a girly-boy” from communist East Berlin, becomes the “internationally ignored song stylist” known as Hedwig after a botched sex change operation. With a little help from her band and her back-up singer Yitzhak, Hedwig examines her quest for her other half, for love and, ultimately, for her identity. This genre-bending, fourth-wallsmashing musical sensation delivers a hilarious, harrowing and essentially uplifting story for anyone who has ever felt different. This production is intended for mature audiences. 52

| Hotspots.LGBT

Hedwig is portrayed by Scott who has toured the world in Rock of Ages, Boy Band Review and, most recently, Million Dollar Quartet in which his performance as Jerry Lee Lewis won a Carbonell Award. Newbro, who portrays Yitzhak, was recently honored with a 2018 Carbonell Award for her performance of Janis Joplin in Beehive and received the 2017 Silver Palm Award as Outstanding New Talent. Broward Center audiences may enjoy delicious dining and a full cash bar in the Café at the Abdo New River Room starting 60 minutes prior to the performance and during intermission.

The history of Puerto Rico began with the settlement of the Ostionoid people in the archipelago of Puerto Rico between 3000 and 2000. Other tribes, such as the Arawak and Saladoid Indians, populated the island between 430 and 1000. At the time from the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the New World in 1492, the dominant indigenous culture was that of the Tainos. The Taíno culture was extinguished during the last half of the XIV century due to the exploitation of the Spanish settlers, the war they waged against the Taínos and the diseases they brought. Located in the northeast of the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Rico was key to the Spanish empire since the early years of exploration, conquest and colonization of the New World. The

The smallest of the Greater Antilles, Puerto Rico was a stepping stone in the passage from Europe to Cuba, Mexico, Central America and the territories of northern South America. Throughout most of the nineteenth century until the end of the SpanishAmerican War, Puerto Rico and Cuba were the last two Spanish territories in the New World; they served as the last Spanish outposts in a strategy to regain control of the American continent. The Foraker Act of 1900, which established a civil government, and the Jones Act of 1917, which granted US citizenship to Puerto Ricans (in order to be enlisted in the army by the First World War), prepared the way for the drafting of the Constitution. of Puerto Rico and for the establishment of democratic elections in 3056 and change of political status in 1952 to a Commonwealth, where the sovereignty of Puerto Rico continues to fall to the Congress of the United States. The first ever Night Garden makes its debut this holiday season to transform Miami's Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (10901 Old Cutler Road Miami) into an illuminated wonderland at night. Locals, visitors and guests of all ages can journey through spectacular lighting displays, aweinspiring special effects, motion-sensing technology, illuminated mazes, state-of-theart outdoor holograms, sculptures and more unbelievable surprises around every corner. guests can experience the unbelievable.” “The mystical Night Garden will help visitors escape to the gorgeous setting of the worldfamous Fairchild Garden. The captivating experience will span 23 acres at Fairchild, featuring a collection of highlyinteractive landscapes augmented by spectacular 360-degree lighting, illusions and special effects. Highlights of The Night Garden include talking trees, illuminated mazes, engaging scavenger hunts, a whimsical fairyland and growing dandelion field, among other supernatural surprises.
