Quality, design, comfort and eco-conscience remain at the forefront of the new collection, however Monforte achieves “Dystopia" by incorporating contrasting thicknesses, styles, colors, and textures into each individual piece. Jamie Lee Curtis RSVPs to your queer wedding Unless she's been to your wedding, you might not instantly know the name Sara Cunningham. But she's the mother of a gay son, and she's written a memoir about it titled How We Sleep At Night. And what makes her story unique is that wedding thing. Last summer Sara got national attention by posting on Facebook that she would be a stand-in mom at any LGBTQ wedding that found itself rejected by the biological parents. And now Jamie Lee Curtis has purchased the film rights to Cunningham's 2014 book, presumably as a starring vehicle for herself. Curtis was quoted in the Washington Post as having been “moved by [Cunningham's] journey,” and now we're imagining a heartwarming dramedy where the Halloween heroine buys upwards of 27 dresses to wear

The Frivolist By Mikey Rox
9 Things you need to “Cleanse”when entering a new relationship New relationships are the universe's way of giving us yet another chance to get it right in the love department – and since none of us are getting younger, it's wise not to squander it by making the same mistakes over and over. This time around, along with changing toxic behaviors that may have sent your significant other running for the nearest therapist or liquor store, consider cleansing a few areas of your life, tangible and otherwise. Here are a few places to start.
1
Gifts
You don't have to burn all the cards and gifts your ex ever gave you – that relationship is still part of your “story,” and you'll regret expunging those things in the long run (I've been there myself) – but it's important to close that chapter and put the literal lid on those memories. Store them in a weatherproof bin in the basement or attic (or the back of a closet) as a future reminder of what once was instead of a constant reminder of what went wrong.
46 | Hotspots.LGBT
23 45
Bed Sheets
This may seem like an insignificant place to concentrate your cleansing energy, but you and your ex spent a lot of time on your bed sheets. They hold memories (among other things, like your ex's DNA), and your new partner deserves to make new memories on sanitary cotton that's not a graveyard of ghosts of relationships past.
Yourself
One of my best strategies to shake off a particularly bad breakup is to get a new 'do. A fresh hairstyle (or even just a shapeup) has the uncanny ability to change your physical appearance and mental and emotional outlook by providing a sense of satisfaction and confidence. But don't stop there. Schedule a few self-care appointments, like a massage, fitness class and a gripe-and-get-over-it brunch with your besties before moving on.
Your car
Maybe you don't have anything in your car that reminds you of your ex, but it's still an area that you'll want to cleanse before picking up a romantic prospect for a date. Nobody with any self-respect wants to date a slob, and a dirty vehicle is the first warning that you might have cat skeletons buried under stacks of newspapers at home.
Underwear Drawer
My boyfriend and I enjoy buying each other sexy underwear for special occasions, but if we ever breakup those skivs are going straight to the dumpster. They're an intimate part of our relationship, and I wouldn't carry them over into a new one. I'd think about him every time I put them on, which is hardly fair for the new guy I'm trying to entice. It's sad to see them go, I know – they represent many satisfying experiences – but you're here to make new ones, however that may work out in the future.
Hotspots.LGBT | 47
6 78 9 Closets
Did your partner leave clothing in your closet? Return them. Are there items they bought you in there? Put 'em in that bin in the attic. You're not alone here. According to a Nectar Sleep survey, 59 percent of respondents said they do a "fall refresh" to their wardrobes when starting a committed relationship to get rid of previous partners' favorite sweaters and t-shirts.
Nightstand
Medicine Cabinet
Toss the toothbrushes, colognes and any other grooming products your ex might have left behind. Keep the expensive skin creams, though; dumpster divers don't need $90 worth of retinol, son.
There are several life rules I stand by, and one of them is that drawer dildos don't enter my ass; I don't know where it's been, but I know it's been somewhere, and that's enough nope for me. If you're starting a new relationship, clean out your sex drawer so A) you don't look like a fucc boi with your 27 condoms and halfempty bottles of Gun Oil, and B) you don't get called out for being a dirtball while your dick is in your hand.
Media Accounts
If your breakup wasn't amicable and you two are prone to agitating each other on social media, take the high road and block your ex for the time being. New dates deserve a fighting chance to connect with you, and that can't happen if you're diverting energy to a toxic situation. Maybe you can ease into being friends after time has passed, maybe not, but a clean break is best if you intend to truly move on.

GAY8 Festival returns for year 4 By: Scott Holland Sunday, February 17th (Presidents' Day
Weekend) from 11am to 10pm is the 4th annual GAY8 Festival, which will be held in historic Little Havana, Miami (between SW14th Ave and SW17th Ave). The free festival, meant to connect many of South Florida's diverse communities, is a celebration full of art, food, music, dance parties and culture. Last year Gay8 Festival's over 60,000 attendees helped make it the largest Hispanic/Latino LGBTQ hosted festival in the nation.
This year the festival's mainstage (on SW17th Avenue) will feature the music of Company B, Lucy Grau and Envee. There will also be a variety of fashion shows and drag performances, as well as the best Miami Sandwich competition, curated and judged by Sef Gonzalez, the Burger Beast. GAY8 Festival 2019 will also feature a doggie obstacle course, a variety of curated vendor booths, four foreign LGBTQ films presented for free at the Tower Theater, a woman's tertulia (or “salon), Girls' Central (a women's tea dance) and the Macho Dance Party. An air conditioned VIP Lounge will anchor the festival and be featured at the second floor of the Sala Building at 1607 SW 8th Street. Wonderful Latin fare, a full Bacardi Bar, mixing with stage talent, community leaders and other sponsors and VIPs, and special tours like an historic tour with the famed Dr. Paul George will provide for an extraordinary experience. Tickets are $100, and can be purchased at: eventbrite.com/e/gay8-festival-vip-tickettickets-52498631821 It was a pleasure to sit down with coowner/producer Damian Pardo to talk about Gay8.
How has the festival changed from your original plans of Gay8?
It has changed in that with community and corporate support we have been able to build out more programming and offerings.
What is new this year at the festival?
We have brought back all the favorites from last year like the Fashion shows (pet and human lol), free films at the Tower theatre all afternoon, the curated food vendors and the doggie obstacle course. We added several more varied vendors everything from artisan soap makers, massages, and new food vendors. On the Macho Stage we have internationally acclaimed ROSABEL playing for the community this year at no charge to attendees. Our VIP area has a much broader offering: a tasty
Joe
Damian
selection of Latin fare, wine tastings, and a special historic walking tour with Dr. Paul George that begins at 3pm. We have new DJs on the main stage and the Girl Central stage. We have upgraded the closing street dance and float for a much better experience which starts at about 8pm. This year we also built an event on Monday directed by Lynare Robbins called the 4WARD Americas symposium at the University of Miami where we bring activists from Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada to propose best practices for LGBTI activists and educators on a variety of issues.
What does the future hold for Gay8?
As this festival grows it begins to broaden the idea of connection - locally, regionally, and internationally. We hope to continue rounding out this vision and grow our programming organically into the areas that help break down barriers and engage our South Florida community.
For more information on the festival and events surrounding the festival please go to their website: gay8festival.com

Isla El Porvenir
Indigenas Gunas After the independence of Spain in 1822, Panama tried to become an independent country, but a very difficult economic situation, a poor army without armament and an incessant concern to be reconquered by Spain, were more than enough reasons to desist from this idea of independence, finding as the only solution, join the Great Colombia. La Gran Colombia was a kind of league of newly independent countries of Spain, formed by the current Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Panama. In 1925 and after suffering the pressures that Panama exerted on the region, tired by the imposition of taxes and laws very restrictive and unjust, the indigenous Kuma revolted against Panama. The revolt ended with the signing of an agreement by which the region would retain much of its own autonomy in order to preserve its ancestral culture, its roots and traditions that had remained intact throughout the centuries. The Gunas have managed to preserve their cultural identity, have managed to preserve their forests and their beaches, protecting their legacy from the large hotel and timber companies, preserving what could be the last earthly paradise. Talking about Gunas is talking about dance and music, the Hotspots.LGBT | 65

Skilled with the sounds, they are fantastic in the knowledge of the flutes, creating many kinds of flutes, such as the Kortilkit or Urwa Kammu, which they have been developing and improving over the centuries. The archipelago of San Blas is a very popular destination for vaccations probably number one in all of Central America. The islands of San Blas are still totally in control of the indigenous Guna's and many
tourists visit the islands daily. But even so the islands of San Blas are beautiful and pure consarvando their virgin beaches and crystalline water. In the whole world there is not a culture that pre-arises like the first day and that maintains its nature that is very old like that of the San Blas Islands. During your visit to this earthly paradise you will sleep in a very ecologic accomodation built with jungle killings which will help you travel back in time to prehistoric times. The most common way to travel between the islands is with a sailboat, you can also take the plane on some islands there are airports, such as Ilsa El Provenir, Playon Chico, The district where indigenous people live and bring the same name of the population, Guna Yala .

DONALD TRUMP BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI
Donald Trump is a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad president. This is something that has been clear to the majority of Americans from the get-go. Trump’s white evangelical Christian base, however, is largely sticking with him, though poll numbers show he is slipping with them, too. Grinding the government to a halt while he stomped his feet demanding his Great Wall of Racism be built, which tossed billions of dollars into the toilet was not a popular move it turns out. Not that his base really blamed him for the shutdown. The media did a fantastic job of both-siding the story as if Trump, asking for something completely unreasonable, and Democrats, saying NOPE, were equally to blame. Still, his base won’t quit him because Trump is always throwing them a bouquet blooming with bigotry. After all, when it comes to keeping the base happy, it’s all about hurting the right people. Which is why it feels right to acknowledge the one-year anniversary of the Conscience and Religious Freedom Division of the Department of Health and Human Services. If you don’t remember, the division was created to protect health care providers who have a religious objection to participating in sin-care like abortion or gender affirmation procedures. 76 | Hotspots.LGBT
Under George W. Bush, health care workers were given pretty broad protections for refusing to do something if they claimed God told them not to, but President Obama rolled back those protections because they were discriminatory and harmful. But discriminatory and harmful is totally Trump’s wheelhouse, so the Department of Health and Human Services made “religious freedom” its top priority, protecting objectors and punishing places that aren’t totes cool with: say, a pharmacist refusing to fill a birth control prescription; a doctor who refuses to treat AIDS cases; or a nurse who won’t help transgender patients. This was “a significant shift for the office,” reported Politico, “which currently focuses on enforcing federal civil rights and health care privacy laws.” In other words, a department that is supposed to protect people from discrimination instead protects the people who want to do the discriminating. So long as the discrimination is God-approved, of course. “This is the use of religion to hurt people because you disapprove of who they are,” Harper Jean Tobin of the National Center for Transgender Equality said in 2018, according to Politico. “Any rule that grants a license to discriminate would be a disgrace and a mockery of the principal of religious freedom we all cherish.” Tobin was on the money, though disgrace
and mockery are also Trump strong suits, so I suspect there was never a chance he would be moved. Now you might be asking yourself, “Does this really matter? Our health care system is free market based! If a doctor doesn’t want to treat you then just go to another one! Vote with your feet.” If this is possible for you, then congratulations on your privilege. But this is, of course, not possible for a lot of people. For one thing, if you’re seeking emergency care for, say, a burst appendix, you can’t really shop around. Nor do you have much choice if you’re in a small town with only one pharmacy or if you’re having a miscarriage in an area of the country that is served only by Catholic hospital systems (“Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” did an amazing segment on this issue in 2016. Google it). The new and improved religious freedom rule was unveiled right before the annual March for Life in Washington D.C. where abortion opponents gather to protest abortion. This is not to be confused with March for Our Lives at
which actual living children marched to protest being gunned down at their schools. Trump’s religious right supporters see him as an instrument of God who will finally, by packing the Supreme Court with far-right extremists, undo legal abortion in the United States and give every child a chance to be shot at school. Like God intended. These same supporters would also like to see marriage equality undone. And we’ve already seen the constant battering transgender and gender non-conforming folks have received at the hands of this president and his administration. The creation of the Conscience and Religious Freedom Division of HHS is one of the reasons I can’t watch the second season of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Mike Pence is another. It feels too much like a documentary. A lot of damage has been done since 2016. And there’s a lot more to come. A right-wing nosedive into fascism is not inevitable. It doesn’t have to be like this. Keep fighting.

HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti
Look Better, Feel Better, Live Longer

Aerobic Fitness
B
eyond doubt, doing regular cardio-vascular training is the best way to burn fat, build stamina, and improve heart health. Only 20-60 minutes of cardio at least 2-3 times a week at 55-85% of your maximum heart rate (220 – your age) will help you achieve all these goals and more. Aerobic fitness, according to many doctors, is the most important component of physical fitness. When your muscles need oxygen, your aerobic (cardio vascular) system must be able to
84 | Hotspots.LGBT
efficiently deliver it to them. When your body has waste products that need to be expelled (carbon dioxide and metabolic wastes); your heart-lung complex must be up to the task. These two tasks are the basis of aerobic fitness. Aerobic fitness burns body fat. Engaging in aerobic exercise can burn up to one thousand calories an hour depending on the specific type and intensity of activity. As a result, individuals who want to reduce their body fat sensibly, instead of starving the weight off, have a positive, user-friendly option at their disposal. A balanced program of aerobic training combined with good nutrition and regular resistance training to build and maintain muscle is a fool-proof formula to not only help you look fabulous but live longer as well. The value and impact of aerobic fitness to the guy who works out extends beyond the boundaries of the workout room. Research indicates that for every hour you spend exercising aerobically, you extend your life by two hours. Mentally and emotionally aerobic exercise can do wonders for you. Researchers show that individuals suffering from light to moderate depression who engage in aerobic exercise 1530 minutes at least every other day, typically experience a dramatic improvement in their condition. Mental sharpness, better sleep patterns, as well as an improved self-image have also been reported and studied as
wonderful fringe benefits of individuals who hit the cardio room. From a medical-physiological point of view, cardiovascular training can provide the only real fountain of youth and good health to the human body. Aerobic exercise aids in preventing certain types of cancer. Studies show that men and women who exercise are less likely to get colon cancer. Research has also suggested that women who do not exercise have more than two and a half times the risk of developing cancer of the reproductive system and almost twice the chance of getting breast cancer. Cardiovascular training reduces the risk of heart disease. The American Heart Association reports that non-exercisers have twice the risk of developing heart disease and heart attacks than individuals who, walk, jog, kick box, or hit the treadmill regularly. In addition, aerobic exercise is one of the few voluntary activities that is effective in lowering your LDL (bad cholesterol) and raising the level of HDL, the type of cholesterol that lowers your risk of heart disease.

need ADVICE
By Andreus Quinones
You Must Exercise Trust
Dear Andreus, My partner just got a job at the cruise lines, which means he will be gone quite a bit. I must be honest, and say that it bothers me, not just the periods of time apart, but the opportunity to meet someone else. I don't want to say anything, because I don't want him to think that I am trying to get in the way of something he really wants to do. How do I express my concerns without seeming selfish? Sincerely, Justin K. Dear Justin K., Dating someone who works on a cruise line or is a flight attendant, can be challenging. Getting used to periods of time alone, and not allowing your imagination to run wild with all the possibilities of what might be happening in your absence is hard. You must exercise trust. Of course, it might be difficult to endure those periods of time without him, but you must trust him to do the right thing. I always believe in trusting until an individual gives you a reason not to. Also, if possible, you can go on a cruise every now and then, just to make things fun, and show your support for what he is doing. It might ease your mind as well. Dear Andreus, I recently went on a trip to Orlando with some

friends. My partner could not go, because he had obligations to work. While there, we went clubbing, and I got totally trashed. Some guys ended up coming back to the hotel with friends, and I decided to lay down, because I was so wasted. The next thing you know, I have a hot guy in my bed, and I didn't stop it from happening. We had sex, and now that I am back home with my boyfriend, I feel horrible. I am so scared to tell him, in fear that he might leave me. Do I have to? Sincerely, Living A Lie Dear Living A Lie, The name says it all. If you truly love your boyfriend, you are obligated out of that love and respect to tell him what happened. Keeping a secret like that often proves to be more fatal to the relationship, than the infidelity itself. Put yourself in his shoes, would you like for something like that to happen and not know, or find out something that hurtful from someone else later? Also, drinking is not an excuse. You were not so far gone that you could not have stopped it. You yourself said that you “didn't stop it from happening, which means that you were a least mildly aware. Fess up, pray the he forgives you, and don't do it again!
