Welcome to the Fort Lauderdale Pride edition of Hotspots. As Florida’s largest LGBT media network, I can’t begin to tell you how excited we are to be a part of this world-class Pride event on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Not only is this a time for our community to unite and celebrate our diversity, it is time for us to reflect on our common values and to tamp down discrimination of any kind. This will be the very first parade in Fort

Lauderdale history held on State Road A1A along the beach! Keeping with the theme, “Carnaval,” expect to see a festive style of Caribbean and Latin American Carnaval festivals incorporated into vehicles, outfits and activities. I especially want to thank the organizers who work tirelessly all year to bring our community together, including Miik Martorell of Pride Fort Lauderdale, Richard Gray of Greater Fort Lauderdale and our very own Shawn Palacious who is Director of Entertainment.

place. I never let myself think that I was going to die. Even from a child, when something is out of my control I don't let it bother me much. What's going to happen, happens. If you act positive you are more likely to have a positive outcome. Spending that much time in the hospital, did it change your relationship with your mother? My mother and I have always been close. The situation put a strain on our lives, but it made our relationship more relatable. We spent so much time together when I was in the hospital and in my recovery. She sang to me and I think it helped me heal. By the way, American Idol season 1 came out the same year that I got sick. Was there someone on Season one of American Idol that inspired you? 14 | Hotspots.LGBT

Of course Kelly Clarkson, because I saw someone on stage following their dreams and changing their lives. It drove me, and I never gave up on it. That's why I auditioned so many times, and would not give up. When I sing I hope to take people to another place and heal whatever it is that pains them. You auditioned so many times before you got picked, what kept you going? Before my audition, I told myself I auditioned for this 12 times already, maybe this is not for me. So I had decided and I told all my friends I wasn't going to audition unless they come to my state. It had been like 5 to 6 years since they had been to San Antonio, and that year they came and I got asked to audition. I think I said it enough times for the universe to respond. On the inale you got to perform with Patty Labelle, how did that feel? That was something else, because I was sitting at home waiting for the inale and all I knew is that we would each be singing with somebody. When I got the call and the executive producer told me, I was soooo excited. The irst time I met her we had a run through rehearsal and I walked up to give her a handshake and hug. At that moment she looked at me and said she loved me and that she is a fan of mine. To have a legend say that was mind blowing. Where do you go from here? I have been on my own tour since the inale of Idol. I started getting bookings early and thank god I haven't stopped working. I have released a single already “Because of You,” and I was the irst contestant from AI to do so. This month I will be releasing my second single on my YouTube channel entitled: “Forever Mine.” What should our readers expect from your performance at Pride Fort Lauderdale? I always try and give my all at every

performance as I want people to feel something. I promise not to let South Florida down! For more information about Ada Vox, go to her website: of icialadavox.com. OutShineFilm.com. Pride Fort Lauderdale, the oldest Pride organization in Florida, celebrates its 42nd anniversary in 2019. The irst festivals were actually protest marches, born out of the successful 1977 referendum campaign waged by entertainer and evangelical activist Anita Bryant to overturn a historic gay civil rights bill passed in Miami-Dade County. “As the LGBT+ community prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, Pride Fort Lauderdale is reminded of the progress we have made. We are especially honored to have Miss Major Grif in-Gracy as one of our grand marshals. She is one of the few eyewitnesses to that pivotal moment in history who is still with us 50 years later. Miss Major is a hero to all LGBT+ people and we're proud to honor her,” said Miik Martorell, Pride Fort Lauderdale president. More than 120,000 visitors from the U.S. and beyond are expected for the festival, one of the irst in the nation each year, said Richard Gray, vice president for diversity and inclusion with the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Diversity is an integral part of our DNA in Greater Fort Lauderdale,” Gray explained. “We have always been a leader in LGBT+ tourism and we strive to make all our guests feel welcome and comfortable here. That's why our motto is 'Greater Together.' Pride Fort Lauderdale has planned a magni icent festival that showcases just what makes us 'Greater'.” For more information about 2019 Pride Fort Lauderdale “Carnaval,” Feb. 21 – 24, go to PrideFortLauderdale.org. It's the Happiest Season for lesbians into Kristen Stewart

We realize it's only February, but suddenly we're dreaming of a Christmas yet to come, one in which the comedy with the current working title Happiest Season will bring visions of sugarplummy Sapphic romance to multiplexes across this great lesbian-starved land. TriStar picked up the worldwide rights to the holiday-themed project from the writing team of Clea DuVall (who will also direct) and Mary Holland. Meanwhile Kristen Stewart has signed on to star and Mackenzie Davis (Tully) is in negotiations to costar. The story involves a

Sia's making a movie called Music This one will have you swinging from the chandelier: acclaimed recording artist Sia is going to take off her wig to direct a movie, currently titled Music. We admit it's a somewhat generic sounding name for a film, but that's where the basic stuff ends. Popular children's book author Dallas Clayton (Lily the Unicorn) is writing the screenplay based on a story developed by Sia,

and it centers on a sober drug dealer and their relationship with a younger sister who has autism. The cast, so far, includes Kate Hudson as the older sister, Hamilton star Leslie Odom, Jr., Tig Notaro, and veteran Sia video star Maddie Ziegler as Hudson's young sibling. Sia is also working on music for Music – because it's a musical, after all.

young woman planning to propose to her girlfriend at her family's annual holiday party, only to discover that her partner has not yet come out to her conservative family. We detect a bit of Birdcage-ian ROSS farce in this premise, and we're fine with that. One problem: now we've got Andy Williams' “It's the Most Wonderful Time of The Year” in our head. Probably for the rest of the week. Romeo San Vicente

I moved to South Florida 21 years ago and after a few months I met Latrice Royale, and we have been friends ever since. I have seen her at her lowest and now at her highest as a much sought after entertainer (drag race and All-Stars alumni) around the globe, and the one thing I can tell you is that she is the same person I met 21 years ago. Her heart and soul are the same, and that's when you know you have a special person. What better time to run this interview then on Pride weekend, to show Latrice how very proud we are of her. It was a real pleasure to sit down with my friend, for this Hotspots exclusive interview. 30 | Hotspots.LGBT

Now that you are married, how has life changed for you? It's all gotten better. Finding someone that you can really grow with is the most rewarding thing to have happened to me. We've actually found that we're trying to be better for one another. I'm living my best life.

What's ahead for Latrice? The sky is the limit. I've already been part of some amazing projects that are going to come out later this year. I'm pursuing acting for more scripted television and theatre. And of course continuing to grow my businesses and my work within the community.

Speaking of the work you're doing with the community, what drove you to do the work you do?

It's my passion to work with people that drives my contributions to the community. I believe it's important to get involved with matters of the heart. I found myself getting involved with the movement toward Marriage Equality, Amendment Four, as well as local community issues. I've always been a champion for equality and what's right!

Another way you have been giving back is with your Pageant Mr. and Miss Pride South Florida, how did that come to be? As you know I'm an old pageant girl at heart. I wanted to bring the pageant back to give a platform and opportunity for growth for each individual that participates. Pride South Florida Pageantry is unlike any other system. We offer an opportunity to actually compete in a “national pageant environment. It is held in a proper theatre at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. We want all of our contestants to feel like kings and queens. And the winners are signed to an international management company. All for the elevation of the art!

“Finding someone that you can really grow with is the most rewarding thing to have happened to me. We've actually found that we're trying to be better for one

You mentioned your interest in going more into television and theatre, can you tell us more about that? I'm glad you asked! LOL. I just got done working on a new project that I'm very excited about! I am acting and even served as a consultant to the writing staff, which was a whole new direction for me altogether, but that made it one of the most amazing experiences. After getting incredible feedback from my performance during filming, I can't wait for you all to see it later this year.

“I just got done working on a new project that I'm very excited about! I am acting and even served as a consultant to the writing staff, which was a whole new direction for me...”

If you're on the road all the time how do you manage to produce these theatre shows? Ah ha! That's the magic of having a husband with a theatre background! Christopher is the wheelhouse that makes it all possible. He works really hard making sure that everyone feels valued for their time and effort while keeping the engine full steam ahead. We actually could not pull it off without his work. Like I said, it's good to have a husband that gets it.

With Pride Season on the horizon, Tell us your thoughts on Pride? I noticed by your schedule you're very busy, how do you balance your work with your marriage? Well I have to tell ya, it takes a lot of patience, communication and understanding! I am blessed to have a Loving Husband that gets it! It's not easy, we make sacrifices for our marriage to build stability for our future. Unfortunately, we have to work because we are NOT rich! LOL. Even though we are apart from each other, having a partner with common goals, is the key to our success.

I've noticed that part of your company has moved into production, could you tell us how that came about? We already were producing the Pride South Florida Pageant and I had already worked with Peaches Christ, who had written “Mister Act” as a vehicle for me to star in. Therefore, when the idea came up to bring that show to Florida, we felt this would be a great opportunity for the community to be involved. We cast all local talent, including the Pride South Florida Royalty, to create one amazing production. We love bringing a taste of San Francisco to South Florida and will definitely be bringing more Peaches Christ to our lives. 32 | Hotspots.LGBT

I've always said that Pride is my favorite time of year. Although we celebrate Pride Season, I'm a firm believer that “Pride” is a lifestyle! I celebrate Pride every day of my life. Knowing who I am and what I stand for, not only within my community but worldwide, is what makes me proud of who I am. I've been through a lot and I've seen even more. If I can continue to help others see the beauty and potential within themselves, then my job is done. Happy Pride and remember to be the best YOU that YOU can be!

National Responsible Pet Owner's Month

By: Donna Potter Feb. is National Responsible Pet Owner's Month and whether you are getting a puppy from a respectable breeder or a rescue from the local shelter, there are some basic elements to being a responsible fur parent. Your life will be easier as will that of your new pet.

Consider the breed carefully Are you an active family? Do you like to be outdoors a lot, hiking or running? Or do you prefer to ride the sofa? Do you have a fenced in yard or are you an apartment dweller? Do you mind dog hair everywhere or is there someone in your home with mild allergies? There are a lot of considerations when choosing a breed of dog that would be suitable for your family. For example, a large dog might not be suitable for a small apartment but would be ine if you have a large fenced in yard it could play in. A very small dog—like a chihuahua, for example—might not be suitable for families with very young children. And if you want to go running with your dog, you'll need

42 | Hotspots.LGBT

a breed that can keep up with you and needs that level of exercise—an Australian shepherd dog, for example.

It's very important to look at your life, your family, and your work: how much time you can be home and how much time you have to spend with the dog is important. Dogs are a 10-20 year commitment, depending on the breed: you want to get it right! Check your home for hazards Particularly if you are bringing home a puppy, you need to look at your home from their point of view. As a parent of a toddler would do, see your living space, and the area

they will be allowed to walk around in, from their level. Get down on all fours and really take a look around! Suddenly, you'll notice that there are wires that are easily accessible (read: chewable), that certain heavy knick knacks could be knocked down and broken. Ideally, a puppy would have a safe space that is blocked off from less friendly areas of the house. In the early days, a puppy pen, set up on looring that is EASILY washed (puppies have accidents!) makes a lot of sense. When they've got more control over their bladders, you can give them more range, but as you do, re-visit the space with them in mind, to make sure it's safe. At that point, gates are an ideal way to stop them from going up or down stairs, which can be hazardous to puppies. They could easily take a tumble and a lot of stairs can be hard on their still developing hips and knees, leading to problems down the road. The double bene it is that you can keep parts of the house, say the upstairs that is wall to wall broadloom for example, puppy pee free for longer! Spay / neuter your pet Most breeders require that you agree to this prior to purchasing a pet and many shelters will too. It makes sense to spay or neuter your pet and it's the responsible thing to do. Particularly with females, dealing with the heat cycles can be very dif icult and ultimately, you don't want an 'oops' situation! Microchip them for peace of mind

Collars can fall off and fences can be broken, so microchipping your dog ensures that if they ever got lost, anyone who brings them to a shelter or vet will be able to check the chip and reunite you with your pup.

TIP: Don't forget to add changing the address associated with the chip, if you move! Otherwise, if they are lost—and during a move is one of the most common ways dogs get separated from their families—you can still be located. Crate training for a happy dog

While some people view crates as tiny dog prisons, that's not how most dogs see it, if properly crate trained. Indeed, a crate is a safe place that they can retreat to for sleep and relaxation, when life around the house gets to be a bit too much. There is also the reality that most puppies won't defecate where they sleep, so you can get 'potty training' well in hand, quickly and easily. Crate training ensures that if you have to be out of the house for a while every day, your puppy or dog is safe and comfortable. Just make sure it's large enough to allow them to move around and sleep comfortably. It also makes travelling with your dog possible as they can be placed in the crate when you need to leave your pet-friendly resort without them for a little while. Feeding the right foods Yes, those puppy eyes watching you eat every bite of your dinner are hard to resist, but it's important to do just that! Table scraps

and other foods not intended for dogs are bad for their overall health, including their dental health.

Hotspots.LGBT | 43

A diet of kibble and appropriate treats that are high in protein and natural ingredients may be a little more expensive than the store brand dog food, but it's worth it. Your dog will be happier, healthier and live a long life on the right diet. Ask your breeder or veterinarian for their opinions on this one! Socialization is key If you don't want your dog to be timid or afraid, it's important to socialize them. Once they've had all their necessary vaccines, puppy school (or training school for a rehomed dog) are great ways to socialize them with other dogs, in a controlled setting. It's not just other dogs that your pup needs to meet! They should get used to dierent people, sounds and smells, depending on where you live and your lifestyle. And if you want to make travelling a dream, get them used to riding in the car. Make sure you use a crate or some sort of harness restraint to ensure that, in the event of an accident, they're safe too. Pet insurance could save their life Diagnosing an illness or repairing an injury can be very expensive, so the solution,

44 | Hotspots.LGBT

particularly with puppies, is pet insurance. Its health insurance for your pet and, depending on the policy, can provide excellent coverage for those unexpected expenses. A dog can tear a foot pad, eat something it shouldn't have, or encounter any number of other health related issues, so having the insurance will give you the peace of mind you need to ensure that you can take care of them, no matter what happens! Having a dog is one of the most rewarding experiences that anyone can have. It can also be dif icult if you are not prepared and don't 'parent' your dog responsibly. They want to be good boys and girls for you, so help them get there and keep them safe. Bio: Donna Potter is the founder of Fusion Gates. taped auditions. They then called me in for an in person audition, and they oered me the job. Knowing that this is such an iconic show, is there additional pressure on you to play Goldie? Before starting the tour I realized how much pressure there was to honor such a brilliantly written score. Our director says good roles make good actors, so the pressure was on. Since we have been touring, I have realized how deeply entrenched this show is in American culture. That also adds pressure Other than this role, what has been your favorite to play? I'm having a hard time picking between 2‌but I will force myself to say La Gran Semiramis, which is a play from the golden age of Spanish theater. In La Gran I went through more hardship, and was the irst time I tackled such a big role, which was illed with many emotions. What is your fantasy role? WOW, that's a hard question. I can narrow it down to 3: either Lady Macbeth, Bernarda in The House of Bernarda or either if the two older roles in Three Tall Women. What should our readers expect from this production of Fiddler on the Roof? They should expect a production that is absolutely loyal to the original show they know and love, whilst making it fresh with newer choreography. It's a celebration of life, love and

tradition. It's also a show about brave women who confront traditions that deny them what they want to do. It's a roller coaster of emotions, and you will leave the show toasting, dancing and singing to life. The original Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof, which opened in 1964 and featured choreography by Jerome Robbins, was the irst musical in history to surpass 3,000 performances. The show won the 1965 Tony Award for Best Musical in addition to eight other Tony Awards that year. SCREEN QUEEN

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again By Chris Azzopardi You don't need to see Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again more than once. That's still one more time than you needed to see the original Mamma Mia! when Meryl Streep bopped and pranced around the streets of Greece's dreamy Kalokairi island. One very famous woman's infectious buoyancy, however, couldn't entirely save the jukebox musical's no-fun drudgery, nor could she cleanse Pierce Brosnan's croak of a “voice.” For good reason, then, Streep bowed out of Here We Go Again – almost, anyway (her single scene is literally otherworldly and more tearfully tender than it ought to be; also, I'm a crybaby). But no matter: Your mom's favorite movie of 2018 is a

64 | Hotspots.LGBT

brand of stupid-fun I support, probably best viewed after eating an edible. It tells the story of Streep's Donna without Streep (played in her youth circa the 1970s, through lashbacks, by a very alive Lily James), as she journeys to matriarchal womanhood with the man triad who swept her off her feet, naturally set to deeper-catalog ABBA bops/ballads not in its predecessor. Like an amusement park ride you promised yourself you'd never go on again but then you just

couldn't help yourself, Here We Go Again is just that, with the gratuitous and appropriately dramatic and well-lit addition of a mini Cher concert. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, after all, isn't really a movie anyway; it's a gay reason for gay sons and their gay-adoring moms to bond together and want to plan a trip to Greece together and emphatically say “OMG, don't you just love Christine Baranski?!” together. So just surrender to its dumb charms and then gaily skip to the special features to see Meryl do a drag-worthy vocal impression of Cher.

A Simple Favor Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick making out in A Simple Favor was the lesbian kiss 2018 needed, so thanks a million for that, Paul Feig. The comedy writerdirector who we love because he loves putting women irst in his ilms (particularly his muse Melissa McCarthy, in both Spy and Bridesmaids) has his inger on the pulse of so many gay things in his latest lick, merging dark, twisted comedy with his signature farce. Beyond the LivelyKendrick hookup that rocked our world, Feig somehow knew exactly what was missing from queer cinema: a frothy Hitchcockian crime soap opera about a bisexual mom (Lively) and a straight mom (Kendrick) that also features a Mr. Mom (Andrew Rannells, gay). Kendrick's cat-sock-wearing Stephanie meets the sophisticated, wouldn't-be-caught-in-cat-socks Emily, deliciously played by Lively, at their kids' school. They are night and day, and their mom differences (Stephanie would never hang a giant painting of her bushy vag in her home!) makes for some genius comedic awkwardness. But

things get weird and twisty and gayer when Stephanie disappears after asking Emily to pick up her son from school. Emily goes into Nancy Drew search mode: “We are soldiering on with cookies and origami,” she bravely shares with the moms who watch her dorky domestic vlog. Come for the kiss and Blake Lively in men's suits; stay for the bonkers shift into “Murder, She Vlogged.” Shampoo Before we knew straight men could look as good as gay men and not even identify as gay, there was Warren Beatty as George, whose sexuality was the subject of speculation in 1975's raunchy sex dramedy Shampoo. During a business meeting, George explains to aging private investor Lester (Jack Warden) that beauty school led him to his profession as a hairdresser, leaving Lester looking as stumped as any old white guy who can't conceive of breaking gender norms. Little does Lester know that George's bedhead poof of a Mick Jagger mane is the result of the lady carousel he's riding hard. One of those women is Jackie (Julie Christie), Lester's mistress. Lester is blind to their affair: “You think George is a fairy?” he asks Jackie. (Later, when the two are caught in an intimate hair-styling moment, George feigns gay.) Then there's Goldie Hawn and Lee Grant, as Jill and Felicia, respectively; George keeps both women around for different reasons, though role-wise Hawn got the feebler of the female parts while Grant got an Oscar. Set against the 1968 presidential election, Shampoo is a sign of the times with regard to evolving homosexuality and bigpicture politics, marked by an intimate love story that's messy, bittersweet and holds up timelessly in 2019. During one of many supplemental features on Criterion Collection's new restoration, critics Mark

Halloween The new Halloween is not great. If you've never seen a horror movie before or lived through America in 2018, there are some scares, and one particularly effective and artfully shot sequence is thrilling: a long, strolling shot of the franchise's masked terror, Michael Myers, on Halloween night amid trick-ortreaters going about his usual knife-bludgeoning business. It's the perfect throwback to John Carpenter's 1978 classic, his legendary score still bone-chilling 40 years on. The big sell here is Jamie Lee Curtis returning as Grandma Laurie Strode, even though she fell to her death in 2002's Resurrection, a movie that doesn't matter (and never mattered; it's bad) because director David Gordon Green's Trumpera Halloween asks you to forget that Curtis was even in a movie with Busta Rhymes and Tyra Banks. This contemporary pseudo-feminist take featuring generations of women standing up to an evil man (sound familiar?) serves as a direct sequel – and, occasionally, slick homage – to Carpenter's classic. Curtis' Laurie is one-note frayed and ierce, but at least watching her kick major ass is more inspirational than anything the other Grandma Lauries watch on the Hallmark Channel.

Philadelphia For just under ive minutes, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and Mary Steenburgen, along with openly gay screenwriter Ron Nyswaner, re lect on the intent and legacy of their landmark AIDScentric drama Philadelphia. These new interviews featured on the 25th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Edition of the 1993 ilm, renowned for

66 | Hotspots.LGBT

giving a human face to AIDS and gay discrimination, are slight. Perhaps that's because viewing this historical snapshot all these years later – post same-sex marriage, post PrEP – does most of the speaking on its own. It speaks to a time. It speaks to a community. It speaks to those outside of the community: “I don't think Philadelphia was made for gay people,” Hanks says. “It was made for straight people who didn't understand how you could be gay or why you were gay.”

Some Like It Hot American cinema will tell you that if you're a man in peril – running from criminals? looking for a way to see your kids after losing custody of them? – slipping into a dress, plopping on a wig and powdering your face can free you from your troubles. Beloved crime-comedy caper Some Like It Hot, to which Mrs. Doubt ire and those White Chicks owe their thanks, would become the de initive landmark crossdressing farce, and the 1959 ilm is preserved as beautifully as Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis (and, of course, Marilyn Monroe) in lace and lipstick with this new 4K digital restoration Blu-ray from Criterion. Special features are plentiful: a 1988 talk between Curtis and critic Leonard Maltin, a new costume-centric featurette, and a wonderful essay written by author Sam Wasson. As editor of Q Syndicate, the international LGBT wire service, Chris Azzopardi has interviewed a multitude of superstars, including Cher, Meryl Streep, Mariah Carey and Beyoncé. Think Someone Is Hijacking Your WiFi?

By: Sophie Kaemmerle

Here's How You Can Tell and What To Do About It Not only is illicit use of your wireless network a nuisance that can hinder

its performance, but when people hack into your WiFi, it also poses serious security risks. Fortunately, as the network administrator, there a couple ways you can detect whether a neighbor or other stranger is tapping into your WiFi. You can then take the appropriate measures to prevent this behavior and strengthen your overall network security.

How to sniff out WiFi intruders One way to tell if someone could be using your wireless Internet connection is if you are experiencing a slower-than-normal speed while browsing or downloading content. If you suspect that an outsider has tapped into 70 | Hotspots.LGBT

your connection, try unplugging or turning off all of your wireless-capable devices that are connected to the Internet—including your smartphone, computer, gaming console, and television—and then go check your wireless router. Typically, if the light continues to flicker (notwithstanding powering off all of the above), someone else may be using your WiFi. This low-tech method of detection relies on you shutting down all devices and does not provide much additional information, but it is quick and easy. Another more conclusive method is using an app that can search for any unfamiliar devices connected to your WiFi at unusual times and notify you if strange traffic is detected. Apps that can perform such a function include Wi-Fi Inspector or Wireless Network Watcher. You also can log into your router's administration page and check the list of IP addresses, Media Access Control (MAC) addresses, and detectable names for devices connected to your WiFi. The name of the section with that list will differ based on your router, but it should be called something akin

to “My Network,” “Attached Devices,” or “Device List.” You can check this list against the devices within your house or apartment that you know to be connected to the WiFi. Not only can you track network activity through the admin console, but you also can change security settings.

can try a mobile tracking software tool such as MoocherHunter, a part of the OSWA-Assistant wireless auditing toolkit. Law enforcement agencies in Asia and elsewhere use the software to geo-locate wireless hackers from the traffic they send across the network. You can triangulate the physical location of the unwanted user, down to 2 meters accuracy, thanks to the directional antenna on your wireless card.

What is at risk from illicit network use?

Ways to prevent unwanted use of your WiFi Once you determine a neighbor or other person is habitually logging into your network, you should take steps to prevent this illicit behavior. Here are a few ways to put a stop to outsiders accessing your network:

1. Update router password First, you should strengthen the security on your network. That may mean changing the default router name and password for people who have not already done so. In general, changing the password will likely boot off all the devices currently connected. Then you will be rid of unwanted freeloaders and can reconnect your personal devices using the new password. When choosing an updated password, it is typically advised to make it long and reasonably complex that you can still remember. You also can change the router name by accessing the Service Set Identifier, typically located under the wireless settings menu.

When other users tap into your connection, unbeknownst to you, it not only decreases performance, but also poses a significant security risk. Your Internet connection will likely slow down and you may find your devices getting inexplicably disconnected from your router. According to Lifehacker.com, neighbors and other hackers can access shared folders on your network, depending on the security measures you use, allowing them to steal important data. They can even hack into the smart devices in your home and engage in illegal file downloading or illegal music/video sharing. If you suspect someone is stealing your WiFi, it is time to give them the boot. By updating passwords and choosing a secure wireless network encryption, you can make your network safer and less permeable, protecting it from unwanted access and activity.

2. Strengthen security Choose the strongest wireless network encryption that is currently available, or WPA2, which is compatible with most devices manufactured after 2006. Stay away from WEP and WPA if possible, as they both tend to be less secure. You may have to choose the option WPA + WPA Personal to make sure all your own devices can connect to the network.

3. Try a network monitoring tool If you are more serious about detecting not only if someone is stealing your WiFi, but also who or where they are generally located, you

There is a delightful, new restaurant in an old, familiar place. Right on US1 in Ft. Lauderdale, in the former Lemongrass location, SpiceSea Seafood and Thai is pumping out plates full of fresh, delicious seafood. An unlikely combination, traditional Thai and Louisiana seafood boil is brought to you by the owners of Sushi Rock.

On a Wednesday evening recently, I was presented with a smorgasbord of food, by the friendly manager of SpiceSea. As we walked through the lobby, on the way to our table, we discovered a live singer playing guitar. Our host asked if we had any allergies and just a few minutes later, the feast began. We arrived around 7pm and the restaurant was

almost empty, but the other tables in the room began to fill steadily with the delivery of each sequential item. By the end of our meal, nearly every table indoors was full and the place was hopping with chic clientele. SpiceSea prides themselves in serving only the freshest and the best seafood available. the appetizers are the ones you would expect to see at any Asian restaurant… Spring Rolls, Edamame, Calamari and Chicken Satay, but be adventurous! They really make it easy for you with dishes like the Grilled Whole Squid, sliced and served on long plates served with a spicy seafood sauce made from garlic, lime, fresh chili and cilantro. The presentation is definitely a feast for the eyes and not for the gastro-squeamish! We also got the chance to sample the Crispy Papaya Salad. A heaping pile of green papaya is tempura-battered and deep-fried and served alongside of a dish of tomato, greens beans and steamed shrimp tossed in a tantalizing Thai-lime dressing. Next up…the seafood boil! There are four combinations to choose from, all featuring 2-3 pounds of succulent seafood or create your own. Choose head-on shrimp, black mussels, New Zealand mussels, clams, crawfish (available seasonally), Snow or King crab legs or Lobster tails with Cajun, lemon pepper or garlic sauce and pick your heat… mild, medium, hot or Thai spicy! No matter what you decide, count on red potatoes, sausage and corn on the cob making an appearance at this party in a bowl! Share one as an appetizer or make it a meal by adding one of many sides.

I believe my most favorite menu item we sampled was the Sukiyaki Seafood Soup. Mussels, shrimp, clams and calamari swim in unison in a delicious, spicy broth with Napa cabbage, cellophane noodles, scallion and cilantro. Under special entrees, we dined on Grilled King Prawns, split open and fanned out on a platter served with that unique seafood sauce and a side of rice. A slew of other options are available…Thai curries and stir fry, wok noodles and fried rice’s round out an extensive menu. We capped off the evening with fired banana “egg rolls” topped with caramel, whipped cream and a side of vanilla ice cream. Thai donuts and chocolate lava cake looked tempting but I can’t wait to go back and try the coconut ice cream shell! SeaSpice is open daily for lunch and dinner from 11:30am to 11pm… 2am on Friday and Saturday for your late-night cravings. Happy Hour appetizers and salads from $3-$6 and $3 beer and $4 wine are served from 3-6pm daily. Tuesdays, bottles of wine are 50% off all day. Catch a late-night Happy Hour with half off drinks on Friday and Saturdays from 10pm to 2am. Keep an eye out for Sunday brunch with unlimited mimosa coming soon! SeaSpice Seafood and Thai is located at 3811 N. Federal Highway in Ft. Lauderdale, next to LA Fitness. Reservations are accepted at 954-564-4422 or at spiceseafl.com or enjoy in your pajamas at home with delivery through UberEats, Delivery Dudes, Grubhub or Postmates.

y the time this column runs, Donald Trump's State of the Union address will be over and done with. But as I'm writing this there's a good 24 hours before the SOTU. I can't stomach the 24-hour breathless “news” coverage the event is already getting, as if behind the podium will be a legitimate president and not a racist and misogynist buffoon who has done nothing but lie to the American people. Anyhoo, it's totes possible that something Trump says during the SOTU address (which I would like to rename the STFU address so long as Trump is the president) will inspire me to write yet another Creep of the Week column about him. But I'm tired of writing about that fool, so this week let's focus on something lighter: an armed man showing up at a public library to protest Drag Queen Storytime and refusing to leave. You know, to protect the children. Said man is James “Doc” Greene Sr. a rightwing radio host who filmed himself being asked to leave a library in Houston. Greene posted the video to YouTube titling it “Arrested for being a Christian.” In the video multiple police officers have formed a perimeter around Greene and ask him, again and again, to go. The video is peak white privilege. Greene is surrounded by police officers who repeatedly, and politely, ask him to leave and he refuses over and over again demanding to “see the law” he is breaking and asserting that he is “a tax payer.” Did I mention he has a gun? Granted it's a concealed weapon (which is totes legal to bring to a library in Texas), but if you don't

Now, you might be wondering, “Well, what was Greene doing wrong? Doesn't he have just as much right to be in the library as anyone?” Well, yes. But if you're in the library making other people feel unsafe, they have a right to ask you to leave. Which they'd already asked of him. “He was previously banned for filming children at the library, and has been known to cause disturbances,” Houston Police Department spokesperson Jodi Silva told Out Smart Magazine. So when he showed up at the library right before Drag Queen Storytime, they did not hesitate to tell him to scram. Greene clearly thought this was unjust and so the library called the police. In the background of Greene's video, while the police officers have gotten him outside of the building but not off of the premises, the song “I Like to Move It” is playing. So as Greene argues with and disobeys the officers about leaving, the scene is punctuated by calls to “Move it!” Greene asks, again, why he has to leave and an officer says something like, “You were filming in the library” and Greene responds, "You don't realize they're lying to you. You don't realize they're using you. We have a bunch of homosexuals that are molesting children. They are doing it with your help.” The police are astoundingly calm and

HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti

Perfect Abs? HereÂ’s the Plan!

P

erfect six pack abs are desired by just about everyone. In reality, they're attained by only a few. Many believe that eating endless salads and doing sit-ups all daylong are all you need to get that sexy midsection. I beg to differ! You've got to have a plan that includes hard work, the correct exercises and good nutrition. Here's a strategy that may help you to be ready for swimsuit season! First, there are some bad habits you need to break and some good ones you must begin if you want results. 1.Quit starving yourself. This is not the best way to lose weight and get a flat stomach. Your body will only respond by storing fat more

stubbornly, and your metabolism will tank, leaving you with low energy. Instead, embark on a high protein diet rich in fresh

week, maximum, as you would any other major muscle group. Use 3 sets of 10-12 reps for each exercise. Plank Crunches. Start in a traditional plank position with your forearms on the ground and you body perfectly straight. Bring your right knee forward toward your right elbow, then return to the plank position. Repeat by bringing your left knee toward your left elbow. That's one rep.

fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Cut out saturated fats and focus upon eating low-glycemic index carbs that will give you the energy you need for those ab classes.

2.Stop late night eating and mindless grazing. Consuming extra calories in such reckless ways will pack on pounds and inches in no time. Instead, begin the day with a healthy breakfast and eat smaller healthier meals and snacks throughout the day to avoid being ravenous at night. 3.Cut back on booze. Alcohol is empty calories (7 calories/gram) that do you no good and are stored as excess sugar and fat by your body. Instead, drink more water. Did you know that food cravings are often just a sign that you're dehydrated? A tall glass of water is a lot less calories than a doughnut. Now, here are a few surefire ab crunch exercises that will torch fat and sculpt muscle. Work abdominals 2-3 times per

Bicycle Crunches. Lie on your back with your hands behind your head and legs raised and bent at 90 degrees. Alternate sides by bringing your right elbow toward your left knee, then your left elbow toward your right knee, building up to 60 seconds. Try and hold the crunch for a 2 count on each side to force a slower, concentrated movement. Swiss Ball Rollout. Kneel on a mat with your hands on a Swiss stability ball. Keeping your back straight and abdominals engaged, roll the ball as far away from you as you can, then slowly roll the ball back to starting position.

Ten Ways To Spot A Dirty John By: Justin Lavelle The term “Dirty John” refers to the true story of a woman named Debra Newell and her relationship with a man she met online, named John Meehan. It started out like any good love story, with lots of initial sparks and a romantic elopement. However, everything soon turned sour as Debra continuously ignored red lag after red lag. She and her family soon found out that John was not who he seemed to be; and had taken advantage of more than one woman while having several criminal charges against him including gun and drug charges, as well as being a felon and having restraining orders against him. He was labeled “a ticking time bomb, capable of unpredictable violence.” The nickname “Dirty John” had been given to him by classmates. In this day and age, it is so important to stay vigilant and safe with all the possible connections you can make, due to the internet. Not everyone is a good person, or has your best interests at heart. Dating sites and even social media sites are the perfect places for predators like “Dirty John” to hunt. So how can you protect yourself? What are the signs and red lags to look for? Below are ten ways to spot a Dirty John for yourself and for any loved ones you suspect may be a victim to this type of person. 1 - He has no social media pro iles. This is a red lag especially nowadays. Maybe an older man could get away with this one, but it is still good to be wary. Even if a guy has pro iles and they are relatively blank, this could mean he has 120 | Hotspots.LGBT

things to hide. Do not be afraid to ask questions and do a little light prying. Personal safety is more important than being polite. 2 - His personal life is an unknown. He never talks about family and you have never met any of his friends. He has never clearly

said what he does for a living. These are all red lags to keep an eye out for. Family, friends, and work are usually the most important things in a person's life. If he never engages in

conversations involving these subjects, this is a very bad sign. There is a difference between being a “private person” and being suspiciously alone and unspeci ic.

steal money from well-meaning people. Ask questions about the problem and if possible, get proof and use your judgment if you feel he is being sincere.

3 - Your friends and/or family have bad gut feelings. This will be more than that one aunt who never likes anyone griping about a new boyfriend. Introducing a prospective beau to family and friends can bring some things out you may be blind to. Never underestimate irst impressions made by those you trust. Ask them to be honest about their feelings and to tell you anything they feel could be a serious issue. 4 - His stories and timelines do not add up. Maybe when you irst met he said he was an only child, but then tells you he has to help his sister with something. Beware of quick covers to stories like this such as “I just meant I was the only boy.” He may also try gas lighting you if you catch him in a lie. Do not fall for this tactic. You are not crazy. Call him out and do not back down. If he is a truly honest person, he will admit any lies and hopefully have a valid explanation.

6 - Seems too good to be true. Of course, we all know “that couple” who always gets along and are so adorable you could vomit, but realistically, this situation is rare. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. If he is always agreeing with you and/or has the same exact views as you all the time. Take a look into your conversation style. Is he leading and revealing his identity on his own, or his he taking cues from you? Does he always just agree or say “me too” to everything you say? This can be a warning sign of him trying to be the “perfect guy” for you and insert himself in your life for nefarious purposes. Ask questions and allow a back and forth low when trying to get to know a possible new boyfriend. This will most likely help you get a more honest picture of the kind of guy he is.

5 - It seems like he always needs money. Maybe it only starts out as twenty dollars here and there. Then he suddenly has this big emergency story and “needs your help.” Be cautious of this sort of situation unless you have proof of what he is saying. Grown adults can usually take out loans and/or have people other than a new signi icant other to borrow money from. This is a very popular way for con artists to

7 - He always has excuses for unhealthy behavior. We all have bad habits, and that is normal. What is not normal is when it is willful and constantly justi ied by ridiculous excuses. Someone who is not willing to grow and is dependent on you to “ ix” or “take care”

Hotspots.LGBT | 121

of them is a huge red lag. It is never your responsibility to be a crutch for another person, especially in a romantic relationship. A healthy relationship requires both parties to be growing individually and encouraging each other.

8 - He is highly defensive. This can manifest itself in a few different ways. Usually from you trying to ask normal questions when getting to know someone. However, it will be a bit more severe than a regular person not wanting to talk about something. He could raise his voice, punch something, sulk, or even make you feel in danger. This kind of behavior

is unacceptable, and you should distance yourself as soon as possible. Someone who is violently defensive is always going to escalate. It can/will also show up if you catch him in a lie, so be mindful and pay attention to these situations.

9 - He has a criminal record. This will be more than some “dumb teenager mistakes.” Run a background check and if there are violent crimes, charges for thievery, or any restraining orders out for him. It is time to do some serious reconsidering. If you would not prefer to just immediately cut ties, (which is the safest option) and would like to ask him about it, be sure to meet in a public place during the

122 | Hotspots.LGBT

daytime and have a friend nearby and/or on call if things take a turn. Also remember to keep your phone charged if you need to call the police yourself. 10 - He will want to meet too soon or not soon enough. Both of these are red lags because of different reasons. Meeting too quickly can be a sign of wanting to catch you as soon as possible because he sees you as easy prey to get what he wants out of. While not really pushing to meet at all can be to keep the “romantic mystique” alive, and you engaged. It is amazing how attached you

can get to someone without even meeting, so be careful that you are not being cat ished or taken advantage of by that stranger on the other side of your screen. Of course, there are good guys out there, and it's important to keep an open mind as well as open eyes. Some of these on their own can be justi ied by extenuating circumstances, but when you have more and more issues popping up, it is de initely a sign to get out as soon as possible. Always remember to keep your personal safety at the forefront and do not put yourself in a vulnerable position before you are sure you found a keeper. Have you visited Madison lately? It's Austin North as the medical software giant has caused a population boom. It's a fun, walkable city nestled on an isthmus between two large lakes. The isthmus itself at some points is less than a mile wide.

GETTING THERE Madison is a quick drive -- less than three hours from Chicago. You can also take the Amtrak train to Milwaukee and transfer to the Badger Bus or endure the four hour bus ride on the VanGalder Bus. If you stay on the Capitol Square (recommended), you won't need a car anyway.

need ADVICE

By Andreus Quinones

Daddy with Child Dear Andreus. I have a HUGE problem. I am a single dad, and I have two kids. Recently I have been kind of seeing this great guy. He is super sweet, and we have gone out quite a few times now. I would love to get more serious with him, but he has made it abundantly clear that he does not like children. I know that if I tell him, it is not going to go over well. Is there a way to drop this bomb without it exploding in my face? Sincerely, Lonnie G. Dear Lonnie G.,

There is no huge problem, there is only he accepts it or not. Children are a blessing, and if he truly wants to be with you, he will learn to love your children as well. This is not something that you can keep to yourself for long, and certainly not something that you should have to. If he doesn't like the idea of loving you along with your children, there is your answer - let him go. The bigger picture here though is your children, and whether he is a suitable influence in their lives if he decides to stay. He could be great for you, but since it's not just you, consider what his presence will bring to their lives. Dear Andreus, I love where I live, and most of my neighbors. There is a cute young gay couple

142 | Hotspots.LGBT

that lives a couple doors down from me, and I see them constantly coming and going and can tell that there is something wrong. More than once I have heard yelling and screaming, and crashing sounds coming from their apartment. Usually the next day or so, one of them has bruises. The same one always has bruises, which leads me to believe that there is physical abuse. Is it my right to intervene? I don't want to cause more problems for them, but I am afraid this guy is going to get seriously injured. How can I go about this, without being directly involved? Sincerely, Concerned Neighbor Dear Concerned Neighbor,

This is something that happens a lot. I have witnessed this same situation with former neighbors as well. I would not say anything to them directly, but if it is that obvious that someone is being physically abused than you should contact the police. I would not recommend doing it randomly, but maybe when you begin to hear arguing or the potential for something escalating there. At your request, the police will not reveal your identity. Don't feel bad about getting involved. You could very well be saving a life or two.
