Welcome to the Fort Lauderdale Pride edition of Hotspots. As Florida’s largest LGBT media network, I can’t begin to tell you how excited we are to be a part of this world-class Pride event on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Not only is this a time for our community to unite and celebrate our diversity, it is time for us to reflect on our common values and to tamp down discrimination of any kind. This will be the very first parade in Fort Lauderdale history held on State Road A1A along the beach! Keeping with the theme, “Carnaval,” expect to see a festive style of Caribbean and Latin American Carnaval festivals incorporated into vehicles, outfits and activities. I especially want to thank the organizers who work tirelessly all year to bring our community together,

Barbie, the iconic fashion doll, will reach a milestone birthday on Saturday, March 9, the anniversary of her introduction at the International Toy Fair in New York City by Mattel, Inc., on this date in 1959. Since her introduction 60 years ago, over a billion Barbie dolls have been sold. Designed by Ruth Handler for her daughter, Barbara. Ruth's philosophy behind Barbie was that through the doll a little girl could be anything she wanted to be, and that she has choices. To celebrate this very special occasion, Matty's Wilton Park and Art Gallery 21 in Wilton Manors are hosting a huge 60th birthday party! Matty's Wilton Park, 2100 Wilton Drive, is hosting a Barbie 60th Birthday Bash Happy Hour starting at 5 PM, Saturday March 9th, sponsored by "Desperate Plastic", the hit doll-based comedy mini-series which has been called 'Robot Chicken' meets 'Dynasty' and features a cast of hilarious characters including a drag queen and a cross-dressing detective. Matty's birthday party guests are encouraged to dress as Barbie or Ken and a costume contest at 7pm will award the best with prizes. WHOOPI GOLDBERG

deep inside HOLLYWOOD By Romeo San Vicente

American Horror Story Gets Gus Ryan Murphy is gearing up for another season of AHS – its ninth, for the record, and there are no plot details yet – and he has cast Olympian Gus Kenworthy in a major role, playing the boyfriend of Emma Roberts, the only other actor announced in the cast to date. This is not especially shocking news, we understand, as Murphy is as skilled at stocking his casts with exceptionally handsome men as he is at keeping alive the screen presences of his favorite mid-and-late-career leading ladies. We begrudge him none of his choices on that front. We're just going to assume that Kenworthy is a naturally charismatic actor, because so far his limited 26 | Hotspots.LGBT

resume highlights are an episode of The Real O'Neals and a cameo in Sharknado 5: Global Swarming. No shade there, either, though; everyone has to start somewhere after they win medals in the Olympics. We are officially rooting for Gus, and also possibly Jessica Lange and/or Stevie Nicks.

Paper Dea (we really love the blunt instrument qualities of that title) and it's co-written by Victor Miller (Friday the 13th) and Kerry Fleming. But what's queer about it? Well, it stars gay actor Luke Macfarlane (Brothers and Sisters, and all those Hallmark Christmas movies, including the one where he has to fall in love with annoying rightwinger Candace Cameron Bure) as a man released from a hospital for “the criminally insane” who goes home to what seems to be a haunted house. And then there are murders, naturally. Bonus casting: Tatum O'Neal and Brady Bunch's Maureen McCormick, as we don't even care what – we're just thrilled to see their names on the IMDB page, and we hope they both get to do some evil deeds.

Rock Paper Dea is a horror movie we want to see right now

The horror pedigree on this one is a meeting of legends. Tom Holland (the filmmaker, not young Mr. Spider-man), who gave us Child's Play and Fright Night, is working on a new scary movie called Rock

Romeo San Vicente last fright night involved running out of ice cream and it was a harrowing experience.

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 11

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Soju

By Scott Holland

I

I have been hearing about the 15 (biggest number ever I believe) girls competing this year for a while now, so you can imagine how excited I was to see the first episode. The mini challenge was a photo shoot, and surprise each contestant had a drag race legend in their shoot and they had to try and outshine them while giving the direction for the shoot. In the end Silky Nutmeg Ganache won the challenge and a $2,500 G/C to Arda Wigs. For the Maxi challenge Ru informed the girls that their luggage was lost and they had to use luggage that used to belong to a Drag Race Legend. The key was they had to change the clothes in the suitcase to fit their personal look. Silky, as the winner of the mini challenge, got to decide who was getting which luggage. They premiered their looks on the runway with guest judge, the one and only, Miley Cyrus,

30 | Hotspots.LGBT

along with Michelle, Carson and Ross. The winner of the challenge, was former Miss Continental, Brooke Lynn Hytes, who won a 7 night stay in Paris, in a luxury apartment and airfare courtesy of Mister B&B. The bottom two were Kahanna Montrese and Soju with Soju sashaying away. It was a pleasure to sit down with Soju (who is much funnier than she came across on TV) for this exclusive Hotspots interview: Q: At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name? I was 25 when I picked up drag. When I thought of what my name should be I realized Kim Chi was already taken, so I picked Soju, because it sounds cute to say, and I love drinking. Q: How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul's Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you got chosen? I only applied once and when I got chosen I was in shock. I was driving and I pulled over and I screamed. Q: Tell us about your RuPaul's Drag Race experience? I was a little intimidated and scared about the production part of it, but I only remember everyone trying to make me as comfortable as possible and treating me with respect and kindness. That why I was sad to leave. It was a great experience, and it was a lot of fun. Q. Is there something you wish you did different and or is there a certain look you

wish we could have all seen? I brought a lot of grand outfits from a lot of big drag designers. I am sad I didn't get to wear those outfits, but I will be wearing it out, so keep looking. I paid good money so I am going to show them off. Q: What's your marital status? I'm totally single, and after this I am probably going to stay single‌any help is appreciated. Q: Who do you want to win? I would love to have my other Asian sister, Plastique Tiara to win. Even though she is young, she is polished and fierce and I will definitely be rooting for her. Q: Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you. I am world champion in Taekwondo. I have competed most of my life. Q: What's ahead for Soju? Shot with Soju will once again be starting again on YouTube. For those of you who haven't seen it is a Korean-inspired variety show dedicated to drag, and has everything from exclusive interviews with popular RPDR queens, such as Detox, Alaska, and Alyssa Edwards, to weekly reviews of Rupaul's Drag Race. I also will be performing all over, and am very excited for that.

Have you been to Provincetown? Even if you haven't, you owe it to yourself to visit Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It's a cross between P-Town, Rehoboth Beach, and the French Quarter in New Orleans with lots of Mexican lavor. It's arguably one of the gayfriendliest cities in the world. Located on the Paci ic Ocean, the winter temperatures are in the mid-80s every day and it is the dry season. The Zona Romantica (or Old Town) is where you ind the LGBTQ community as well as the LGBTQ beaches and a charming village of cobblestone streets. Even if the beach scene is not your cup of tea, there are shows to see, a great botanical garden, and restaurants galore. All at uberbargain prices.

nice. You are also never on a regional jet operated by another company. From the airport, the premium taxi to town is around $18 ($340 pesos) although you can also take the city bus for just 10 pesos.

Where to stay

I stayed in a condo in the Zona Romantica in the Amapas area, home of the LGBTQ scene. Check out pvrpv.com for condo rental ideas. Across the street from our condo was the Hotel Tropicana which is very nice. LaTerraza is also good and has a breakfast restaurant open to all. The San Marino is another popular choice.

Getting there

I took Southwest Airlines through Denver although PV as they call it is served by all the major airlines. I like Southwest since they don't charge for bags, don't have any ticket change fee, and the employees are always

Zona Romรกntica

Mantamar Beach Club

What to do

Take the El Tuito bus for just 30 pesos to the Vallarta Botanical Garden about 45 minutes south of town. Bring your swim suit for a swim in the river after a hike to learn about the tropical trees. Visit the orchid display including learning about my favorite

orchid, vanilla. Enjoy lunch in their restaurant featuring authentic dishes. For the less adventurous who want to skip the local bus, the new Botanical Delights Tour and Culinary Adventure is also offered this year which picks you up in a nicer bus albeit without the local color. Check it out at tours.vbgardens.org to schedule the tour or vbgardens.org for general information.

On Saturdays, the Olas Altas Farmers Market at Lazaro Cardenas Park in Old Town is a must. I had the paella which was incredible. They also have free music. Visit the beach. There are several options. The A List will be found at the Mantamar Beach Club which also features a pool. It is part of the Almar Resort. We chose the green chair beach, The Ritmos. You can order lunch delivered to you in your rented beach chair. The avocado, tomato, and shrimp salad is to die for. Vendors plying lots of stuff will come by. My friends like the sunglass vendor. There are several places to see shows. The Incanto had Thirsty Burlington as Cher while I was there. We went to see the fabulous Kim Kuzma at the Palms. Brandon and James (a musical duo) are another must. Their show is called The Greatest Showman. They also have a new show which will appeal to the tons of Canadians in town (LGBT and otherwise) called Oh Canada. The prices for all the shows are very reasonable (around $30 US). For details, see thepalmcabaret.com. For a visit to the real Puerto Vallarta, head above the beach area to the hills or take the bus to nearby Pittillal. It's a nearby town that is very authentic. You won't ind any tourists but lots of local lair and great local restaurants. Whale watching is another option. Diana's Cruise and the Wet and Wild cruises are other options.

Other fun stuff

Wednesday nights is the Art Walk in the historic center.

Hotspots.LGBT | 39

Keep in shape at The Fit Club which sells days passes for 240 pesos (around $13).

Where to eat

Everything is good and is a bargain. $7 shrimp dinners plus $3 for a glass or wine, and it is the best shrimp I have ever had. I liked the NoWay Jose Mexican Restaurant (nowayjosemx.com) which features traditional Mexican food and great margaritas.

Fajita Republic is another good Mexican restaurant and is welcoming to groups. The salads at Barra Light are very good. The new Eclecticos gets rave reviews although you need reservations. For breakfast, try the Pancake House which has a Mexican lair and great local fruit plates.

pesos to the U.S. dollar. Your cell phone will be subject to roaming charges unless you elect an international plan (as I did with AT&T) which costs $10 a day. My friends have T Mobile and their plan includes Mexican phone and text service. Put your phone on airplane mode to be safe that you are not inadvertently roaming onto a Mexican carrier without such a plan in place. Many establishments offer free Wi-Fi so you can easily keep in touch. While Puerto Vallarta is safe, watch your step on the cobblestone streets and sidewalks. And don't drink too much tequila. Don't get in a taxi without agreeing on a fare. There are no meters. Also, the new Governor of Jalisco (the state PV is in) has vowed to get rid of Uber although so far it is still available. You owe it to yourself to visit “PV” soon if you have not already been. And I don't mean on a cruise ship. The dock is far from the LGBTQ village. For more information, check out gaypv.com for the Gay PV Guide. They also have a quarterly magazine. The Out and About Magazine is another resource (outandaboutpv.com). Another weekly is the Vallarta Tribune (vallartatribune.com).

Fun at the bars

Enjoy a Cosmo for just 40 pesos at Swedes Bar on Pink Wednesdays. They are at the bottom of the Gondola. The happy hour at the Signature Bar is another must, if only for the sunset and ocean views. You take the gondola up the hill to the bar which is near Swedes. Wine is just 55 pesos during happy hour. Enjoy a mixed drink for 25 pesos at La Reina Bar. CC Slaughters is also a lot of fun.

Travel Tips

You can withdraw pesos at ATMs with your U.S.ATM debit card. Many establishments do not take credit cards so be sure and stock up. Bank ATMs are recommended as opposed to unaf iliated ones. Also let your bank know (as well as your credit card issuer) that you will be travelling to Mexico. There are 18

WANDA SYKES As Puzzled As Ever

Comedian talks walkouts, Ellen's interview with Kevin Hart, and the role her wife plays in her comedy career

Photos: Derek Wood

By Chris Azzopardi

46 | Hotspots.LGBT

Because according to Trump's America only white het men can exist, now would be a good time to reintroduce Wanda Sykes. She is a black person and a woman and a lesbian. And if you go to one of her Oh Well stand-up shows this year, or catch the taping of one on Net lix tentatively scheduled to stream later this year, expect a poking and probing of things affecting Americans who identity as any of those under-attack minorities. Some women who are still supporting Trump for some reason may have bene ited from that very basic Wanda Sykes 101 bio above before seeing the actresscomedian-writer in New Jersey in September 2018 and walking out and then demanding a refund from the Count Basie Center for the Arts. These are the same people who loved the 54year-old comedian in Monster-in-Law and Evan Almighty and as the voice of an animated skunk in Over the Hedge. And the same people who then wondered what the problem was when Roseanne tweeted a racist tweet and why Sykes, who wrote for the Roseanne revival, jumped ship. Not that the entertainer and mom-to-twins didn't have a loaded

schedule, but with recurring TV roles on Broad City and Black-ish (for which she was Emmy-nominated), and several new movies out this year, Sykes has somehow found the time and energy to rattle the privileged cages of Trump supporters.

Are you unfazed by walkouts at this point in your career? It cracks me up, really. Like, what were you expecting? What are the crazy ladies' names? Diamond and whatever? The two AfricanAmerican women. I forget their names. Diamond and Salt? Silk? (Editor's note: It's Diamond and Silk, vloggers known for supporting Donald Trump.) It's like, no, that's not me.

I watch politics, I follow what's happening in the world. I like to talk about social issues and I like to talk about my family and personal issues.

Or Kanye West. Right, right, right.

At this point Trump is basically writing his own comedy show. Recently, there was a photo of him standing in front of a Burger King and McDonald's buffet at the White House. It's hard to top him.

When the fodder is ripe for comedy is it actually harder to write the joke? Yeah, it's hard to top as far as what he does, because it's just so ridiculous. Like when he does something ridiculous, it's hard to write something where you would go, “That's like blah blah blah,” because it's already ridiculous. It's hard to do a metaphor. So, really, you just have to talk about it as far as the level that it's gotten to, and I don't understand why we're still putting up with it. Why aren't we out in the streets, and you know, ready to drag him out of there, out of the White House? Because remember they got upset with Barack Obama when he wore a tan suit? I mean, this is ridiculous, the level that they're going to. Do you remember your irst walkout and what that was like?

Hotspots.LGBT | 47

I got walkouts back under the George W. Bush administration. There were some walkouts back then. So, I've gotten used to it.

I think I read that during one of your irst shows in the late '80s, the audience booed you. That was the second one. The irst one I did went great. I almost won the contest; I did really well. So that's why I stayed with comedy. And then the second time, it didn't go well. I just bombed (laughs). I think because I was just so con ident from the irst time that I maybe (got) a little too cocky. Actually, I think it was the irst time being on stage and it went great, and then I started going to comedy clubs and I saw how it could actually go really poorly and just go off the rails. I watched comics bomb and then when I went back on stage again I was just really nervous because I realized they don't have to laugh; they can actually sit here and boo. So, I think that's what happened the next time I did the competition.

What is one thing you want people to take away from Oh Well? I hope they take away that I haven't lost hope. That I still believe that people are good and that we'll get through this, so I hope they walk away with that. Like, I'm not saying, “Hey, it's the end of the world.” Where are you deriving that hope from? Young people. They give me hope. The Parkland kids, they do, they give me hope.

Through your involvement with the Ruth Ellis Center for homeless and at-risk LGBTQ youth in Detroit, you've met a lot of young people. What do young LGBTQ people want to know about Wanda Sykes? A lot of it is career-wise, 'cause a lot of them, man, they're so talented, they're very creative, a lot of the kids from the center. So a lot of them want to know how I got started and any advice career-wise, and then of course how hard was it coming out and do I think that it had an effect on my career and also advice on dealing with family members as far as having problems dealing with coming out. (Laughs) Sometimes it's just, “Hey, what do you like to do for fun? When you get stumped creatively, what do you do to get out of it?”

48 | Hotspots.LGBT

What do you do to get out of it? You know what, I like jigsaw puzzles. (Laughs) I know I sound like an old lady! But every now and then if I gotta break it up and nothing is coming to me and I get stuck in a rut, I like to break out a jigsaw puzzle and maybe put some music on, something I don't normally listen to. You just need a shift. As soon as you make a shift, it opens everything back up for you.

What's the last jigsaw puzzle you completed? It was a cover from the New Yorker and it was a dog sitting on porch steps.

So you're a dog puzzle person? (Laughs) Nah, it's not a lot of abstract stuff I do. I like a piece of art, or you know, it's usually still life. Do you do the 5,000-piece puzzles or are

you more of a 300-piece puzzle person? Usually it's more like 2,500. Five-thousand, that's a project for over the summer.

Who do you test your material out on? Pretty much the audience. My wife can see when something happens, and if I write it down or she sees something in my phone she's like, “Oh boy, that's a joke for you now.” Or something happens and she'll say, “Oh, you should write that down! That was funny!”

How were you writing your material before cell phones? I always had a notebook and always wrote things down in my notebook. I have boxes and boxes of notebooks where I used to write my stuff down. Now it goes in the phone, but I still like to write by hand. Will your Net lix show be out this year? I just shot it in February, so it'll probably be out late spring.

Trump, I need something on gun control.” That's not how I write, it's not planned. It's what happened. And that's the kind of comedy I like. There's room for all types of comedy; there's physical humor and there's some comics who are not political at all and that's ine. But for me, if I walked out onto a stage and didn't say anything about this craziness that's happening, it'd be like the elephant in the room. I think when I go on stage people are waiting for it. Like, “Oh, OK, when is she going to get there?”

It's affecting everything you stand for, so how could you not? For me, I believe that's the job for an artist. But then again, there are all types of artists and comics out there.

Will that be the Oh Well show? Will it be as antiTrump as the show you're currently touring now? (Laughs) I would say the irst 15 minutes or so – 20 minutes – is that. But then I move on! The tour that I'm doing now, that will be the special I'm working on. The Guardian called it a “tough anti-Trump tirade.” Is it scary to talk about Trump because of what happened to Kathy Grif in? No, I think we see that Kathy was right. I think she was just a little ahead of us as far as where this was going. Right as far as her lambasting of the president? Right.

Do you feel you have a greater responsibility now to speak on political and social issues? I talk about what interests me and what I ind funny and what I like to talk about. I watch politics, I follow what's happening in the world. I like to talk about social issues and I like to talk about my family and personal issues. To me, I'm not going out of the way to say, “Oh, I need 10 minutes on

Ellen's recent interview with Kevin Hart upset many people in the LGBTQ community. She was criticized for making Kevin out to be the victim, while muting the voice of her own community. Don Lemon was one of her critics. Where do you stand on how that interview went? I looked at it as two comedians who are friends and she was trying to help out her friend. Now, I agree with Don Lemon that there is a huge issue in the African-American community concerning homosexuality and the LGBTQ community. So, I think for me, you'd have to go a little deeper with discussing that. To me, to say, “Hey, I already apologized and I didn't know about it until it came out this time around” – so, it's like, well, we didn't know about that and now we do, so where's the apology? Or at least have some type of awareness as far as how your words really are affecting a lot of kids in our community. So, I always gotta come on the side of kids and our community.

People, including actress-writer Lena Waithe, have been expressing a desire to see you as Oscar host. Would you be interested if they had asked? If they had asked, yeah, I would've be interested, but it would be cool if they made it very inclusive and made RuPaul host.

Regarding your acting career: Have you had the acting career that you always desired to have? Well, I never really desired to have an acting career. I just wanted to be one of the funniest comedians out there and wanted to make a living traveling all over, and ilm and TV is a bonus, really. I mean, come on, I got

50 | Hotspots.LGBT

to go to Hawaii to shoot a movie with Amy (Schumer). But to me, I take it seriously, though; I also just love doing it. I love stand-up. You have several ilms slated for release this year, including Friendsgiving and The Wedding Year. In Friendsgiving you play what must be a dream role: the fairy gay mother. How does one get the role of the fairy gay mother? You're just blessed with a role like that. You get a call and you're blessed and it's like, “Hey, you're the fairy gay mother with Margaret Cho and Fortune Feimster.”

Do you get a magic wand? I'm not gonna tell you if I get a magic wand or not. But there are wings involved!

If you had a magic wand, how would you use it? Oh, boy. I can do a lot of things though, right?

You're like Cinderella's fairy godmother. You just wave that wand around, and if you want you can turn Trump into a horse. (Laughs) Well, he's already a jackass.

And you don't even need a wand for that. Don't even need it. Wow, what would I do? I think irst I would make Oprah the president, and then I'd do something about guns, and then I'll make sure that Flint has clean water. I'll do that.

My husband Jonathan and I recently went to dinner at a family-owned southern Italian restaurant at the Ocean Manor Resort in the Galt Mile Fort Lauderdale Beach area. Wow! I feel like my family (who are ‘Full-blooded Sicilian’) cooked, served and entertained us for two and a half hours. Casa Calabria is one of Fort Lauderdale’s most authentic

Italian dining experiences. Founded on the Talerico family’s recipes, Chef Adriano Serra transports you to Italy with Southern Italian dishes like homemade Calamari Fritti, Ricotta Gnocchi and Branzino that is flown in fresh from the Mediterranean Sea. It all culminates with their divine homemade Tiramisu. We were greeted by Lina,

and escorted to our table where we met our team of servers, who immediately brought us crispy Italian bread with a side of sugo (the Italian word for sauce) which is great for dunking this dense sliced bread. Of course, they still have imported EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) at every table too for those of you who like

to dip instead of dunk. The serving team continued to work like Mama would have when you bring friends over in order to make everyone feel like family. Our friendly server quickly described the evening’s specials which included grilled lamb chops, a 16 oz. T-bone steak and swordfish filet topped with shellfish in a sweet and tangy tomato sauce. To begin our special evening we ordered the Burrata Fatta a Mano, fresh mozzarella with a rich, creamy soft center ($18). It was topped with fresh basil and artistically drizzled with EVOO, balsamic vinegar and chopped fresh tomato. It tasted like the mozzarella was fresh made just for us. As Jonathan and I were finishing this soft, creamy delicacy, Chef Adriano came out of the kitchen to visit us and every guest. He joyfully bragged about his favorites which included his homemade gnocchi, lamb chops and the special swordfish filet. He made it sound so fresh and yummy, just like he caught it himself earlier in the day. The final decision to select which of the main courses we wanted was upon us. Jonathan chose the 8 Oz. Filet Mignon topped with creamy brandy gravy and green peppercorns ($45). I went with one of the Chef’s favorites, the Swordfish and a side of fresh pasta (market price).

Both items were prepared perfectly. My serving of Swordfish was more than enough to share. I also suggest that you try the Calabria Meat Sauce with Pasta. The taste brought me back to southern Italy. This sauce includes slowly stewed chunks of beef in a delicious fresh tomato and basil sugo. The main courses range in price from the $20’s to $40’s. And all of the selections seem to include enough leftover for a tasty lunch the following day. Italian families love their sweets. So save room for Casa Calabria’s heavenly tiramisu ($10) and a fresh ground and prepared espresso ($2.50). Our server stressed that their tiramisu is made with mascarpone cheese. The authentic way to create this house specialty. I have enjoyed tiramisu from several different regions of Italy, and Casa Calabria’s ranks at the top with the best in Italy. Don’t miss this specialty. For those of you who are more of a ‘chocoholic’, Casa Calabria’s chocolate cake with layers of sweet hazelnut cream ($10) is a perfect selection. After dinner, we went and hung out in their popular piano bar where almost every Italian in the area seems to be regulars. And in between sipping on their cocktails, they are singing along with live performers. Casa Calabria is the fine dining attraction and lively piano bar at Galt Ocean Mile’s popular. Ocean Manor Resort. The resort includes private poolside cabanas and a 200 foot private beach. There is also the world famous Bamboo Beach Tiki Bar which is known for having the best happy hour in South Florida. And the luxurious OMm Salon & Spa. Buon Appetito!!!

TRANSGENDERED STUDIES

101 Published earlier this month by academic LGBTQ book publisher Harrington Park Press, “Introduction to Transgender Studies,”is the irst ever introductory textbook intended for transgender/trans studies at the undergraduate level. For undergraduates/faculty, this means an enjoyable and lively classroom resource for “Transgender 101,” when offered by their school–and very little excuse if such a course isn't provided. Encompassing and connecting global contexts, historic and contemporary issues, literature, history, politics, art, and culture, author Ardel Haefele-Thomas embraces the richness of intersecting identities—how race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, nation, religion, and ability have cross-in luenced to shape the transgender experience and trans culture across and beyond the binary. “I have often found that students experience a good deal of anxiety, trepidation, and confusion when studying issues pertaining to sex and gender, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation,” says Haefele-Thomas. “I wrote this book to create a safe space for the full spectrum of undergraduate students, ranging from those who have never thought about gender issues to students who identify as transgender, trans, nonbinary, agender, and/or gender expansive.

76 | Hotspots.LGBT

In short, the language and the artwork in this book are meant to be welcoming.” In addition to dozens of personal stories throughout the book, each of the book's twelve chapters features “Writings from the Community,” a series of fascinating and deeply personal essays that relate the chapter theme to the lived experiences of trans and LGBTQ+ people and allies from different parts of the world, as well as an invaluable list of “Films and Television of Interest.” “A book like this matters to everybody. The more I speak and perform as a trans artist, the clearer it becomes to me that everyone suffers from the painful and damaging belief that there are only two genders in the world. In that way it is so helpful for everyone to be reminded that ever since human beings began to organize themselves into societies there have existed different genders and sexualities outside the heterosexual norm. And it helps all of us who identify as queer or trans to understand that we are not alone in the world. That we all have a history to which we can proudly belong.” – From the book's introduction by playwright and performer Jo Clifford. RANDY GARBER

O

h, hey, did you hear that in Kansas lawmakers are trying to establish the LGBTQ community as a religion? Or, more specifically, they're trying to argue that LGBTQ people are actually secular humanists so that Kansas doesn't have to recognize marriage equality anymore; also that gay people aren't black, I think. I mean, the legislation includes the claims that “There are no ex-blacks but there are thousands of ex-gays” and “skin tone is genetic and sexual orientation is faith-based.” The bill also proclaims that all marriages of same-sex couples are “parody marriages,” that sexual orientation is “a mythology,” that “a person can come out of an invisible closet and be baptized gay,” and that LGBTQ people have “a daily code by which members may guide their daily lives” and that they worship the rainbow flag. It's truly some of the most bizarre legislation that I have ever read. It would almost be funny if, you know, LGBTQ people weren't actual humans. Clearly, Kansas Rep. Randy Garber, the legislation's lead sponsor, doesn't think LGBTQ people are human at all. But don't worry, he loves you. “I don't believe myself to be a bigot,” Garber told The Wichita Eagle. “I'm Christian and I love people. I believe you should love everybody, but I believe you should also take a stand on what you believe, lovingly.” Ah, yes. The bill is so very loving. I especially feel loved by the part that claims marriage equality is “the greatest sham since the inception of American jurisprudence.” Oh, and the part where LGBTQ people are lumped into the same category as beastiality is also nice.

84 | Hotspots.LGBT

OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI

Why does Garber oppose marriage equality so hard? “Their marriage probably doesn't affect me – their union or whatever you want to call it. But in my opinion, they're trying to force their beliefs on society,” Garber told The Wichita Eagle. Says the man who has put his name on a bill that essentially forces all LGBTQ people to be part of a specific religion. But nice of him to point out that two women or two men marrying has nothing to do with him and thus that there is no reason to try to enshrine this anti-LGBTQ lunacy into law. What's interesting is that Kansas has Laura Kelly, a Democrat, as Governor right now and also has Rep. Susan Ruiz, the first openly lesbian politician elected in Kansas. The previous governor, Sam Brownback, was a Republican who really hated gays and also tried to grind the state into dust through austerity economics. So, it seems likely that this unhinged bill is in direct response to some more progressive winds a-blowin' across the Kansas plains. “I am very disappointed,” Rep. Ruiz told The Wichita Eagle. “I see who the cosponsors are and I sit with a couple of them in committee and I'm certainly going to talk to them about that and say, 'Hey, I don't know if you know about it or not, but I'm not a myth ... Am I a unicorn?'” As she should. I would very much like to see how those conversations go. I strongly suspect that she's NOT a unicorn, nor are other LGBTQ Kansans. Equality Kansas Director Tom Witt called the legislation the “most vile, hateful and disrespectful” he's ever seen. “Every year, we see bills that restrict,

It's truly some of the most bizarre legislation that I have ever read. It would almost be funny if, you know, LGBTQ people weren't actual humans. remove and limit the rights of LGBT Kansans, but never have we seen this level of extremist vitriol laid out in legislative language. These bills combined are 18 pages of insults and namecalling,” Witt told The Wichita Eagle. Witt also said, “Fred Phelps would be proud.” Phelps, of course, was the leader of the Kansasbased Westboro Baptist Church. He and his followers picketed funerals of gay men with signs that read “God hates fags,” among other similar acts. The church continues the cherished Phelps family tradition of protesting the “fag lifestyle of soul-damning, nation-destroying filth.” I'm old enough to remember when anti-LGBT Christians cared to differentiate themselves from the Westboro folks. Sure, they wanted to amend the Constitution to hurt LGBTQ people, but out of love, not out of hate. They'd never picket a funeral, for goodness' sake. Though they would deny survivor benefits to the long-term

partner of the deceased. They would never celebrate the death of an American soldier as just punishment for a “Fag Nation.” But they also wouldn't want gays in their military. They would never put a GIF of Matthew Shepard surrounded by flames on their websites, though they'd always wonder — sometimes quietly, sometimes not — if Shepard didn't bring it all on himself. In actuality, the only difference between Westboro and non-Westboro anti-LGBTQ folks was that the latter used nicer language. Garber's legislation helps expose that distinction as meaningless.

Monday: Your Most Important Workout Day

P

erseverance is the key to success in any endeavor. Whenever you embark on a new project, you're going to have ups and downs, some successes and a few failures, but you must “keep on, keeping on, as they say. This is so true with your fitness routine. Whether you want to drop weight, burn fat, build muscle, strength, and endurance, or all the above, it takes single-minded perseverance and hard work to achieve results. One way to ensure success at this process is to start off the week with a Monday workout! Monday workouts have a psychological/mental component. For most of us, Monday is the toughest day of the week. Maybe it's the let-down of getting back to the salt mines after an

92 | Hotspots.LGBT

incredible weekend. Perhaps the glum prospects of facing more meetings, tough deadlines and dead- beat coworkers are just gnawing at your gut. Even if you're crazy, mad, wild about your job, a new week can seem like a daunting challenge. Exercising first thing on Monday not only gets the ball rolling for your fitness routine, it's something healthy and valuable you do for yourself. Studies show that those who exercise on Monday are more likely to stay active all week long. Regular exercise can help control anxiety, depression and panic attacks. It might seem more logical to pull the covers over your head on Monday mornings, but a few more minutes/hours of shut-eye won't make the world go away. Early morning aerobic exercise like a quick swim or a brisk walk with the dog can lessen general anxiety. More high intensity exercise like an hour of weight training has been shown to release endorphins in the brain. These are the body's natural pain killing hormones which promote peaceful thoughts and feelings of well-being. It takes will-power to succeed at your fitness routine as well as in other areas of life like your job,

relationships, and busting pesky cravings. Exercising and staying active beginning with the first day of a new week can help you get into a positive, pro-active mindset that will help you achieve personal goals like losing weight and quitting smoking. Exercise releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps keep you in control of impulses and can quiet anxious brain activity. Monday workouts can help you make more money. Alright, I can't prove this, but think about it for a second. People who exercise regularly handle stress better, have a more pleasant demeanor, and possess greater energy to get tasks completed quicker and more efficiently. What boss isn't going to promote this kind of person over a sluggish couch potato with a sullen attitude? Here's to a brand- new week and your fitness lifestyle! Even if this Monday a workout is impossible, there's always Tuesday, Wednesday‌you get my point! Go for it!

Fort Lauderdale Gay Mens Chorus Honors

100 YEARS OF BERNSTEIN And the Legacy of MATTHEW SHEPARD

The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus (FTLGMC) is honoring the 100 years of American Composer Leonard Bernstein and the legacy of Matthew Shepard – a college student who more than two decades ago was the victim of a brutal gayhate murder – during “A Celebration of Life, Love and Music” performance on Sunday, March 17 at 5 p.m. at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Fort Lauderdale. A portion of show proceeds will bene it the Matthew Shepard Foundation. While a signi icant portion of the evening showcases the proli ic works of Bernstein, the Chorus is dedicating “Changing Hearts,” a special, six-piece collection, to Shepard and others who have been the victims of gay-hate crimes. The set features songs from some of Bernstein's renowned Broadway musicals such as West Side Story, On the Town and Candidae. Scenes from The Laramie Project, a play that debuted in 2000 by Moisé s Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project

about the reaction of Shepard's death, are being interspersed with the evening's musical selections: Tonight; Something's Coming; One Hand, One Heart; I Can Cook Too and Make Our Garden Grow. According to Dr. Gary Keating, founding and current director of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus, the evening's performance is a reminder of how far the LGBTQ community has come, but reminds us there's still work to do. “Twenty years later, Matthew's untimely and tragic passing is one we will never forget. We hope this performance inspires the community to support the Matthew Shepard Leonard Bernstein Foundation's efforts to replace hate and embrace human dignity and diversity through its various programs,” said Keating. Funding for the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council. General admission tickets are $25 and VIP tickets with Matthew Shepard priority seating are priced at $40, plus a small service fee. Tickets are available for purchase online at TheFTLGMC.org or by calling (954) 832-0060.

HOT ADVICE

By Andreus Quinones

Sex with Love? Dear Andreus, I have been hooking up with the same guy for a while. We met on Grindr, and it has always only been a sex thing for me. We have sex, and then he leaves. The last couple of times he has been hanging around and trying to be a bit more romantic with me. He keeps hinting at things like wanting a boyfriend, and needing a relationship, but I don't want that with him. I don't know what to do. I love the sex, but he is not the type of guy that I could have a relationship with. Help! Happily Single Dear Happily Single, There is no way to handle this situation other than being honest. If you want only a sexual relationship, then you need to tell him. Some people are not able to separate sex from their emotions, so they equate sex with love. You are obligated to be straightforward. The longer you do this, potentially the more emotionally involved he will become. Then instead of him being a little hurt that you don't want more, he will be crushed. It's always important to be direct about what you want from the beginning so nobody gets hurt.

Dear Andreus, I just got the opportunity of a lifetime. I got an amazing promotion at work, and the pay is

118 | Hotspots.LGBT

outstanding. I have been waiting years for this, but there is a problem. It requires that I move to the west coast, and my partner does not want to go. I am so conflicted because I have really wanted this job and have been working towards it for at least 10 years now. I love him, and I don't want to leave him behind, but he is dead set on not moving. What am I supposed to do? Sincerely, Jason G. Dear Jason, First, congratulations on the promotion! Seems like you are struggling between two loves. Having worked so hard, you deserve to pursue your promotion. Is it possible that you and your partner can come to some type of arrangement? Maybe he can live part-time with you there or visit you a week out of every month. There is no easy way through this situation. You guys are going to have to sit down and really talk about this. If you two have a solid relationship, there will be a way to figure this out, so everyone at least gets some of what they want. Don't make any demands and don't give ultimatums. Just talk about it and ask him what he would do if he were in your shoes. I really hope it works out.
