Singer, songwriter and actress from stage to screen, Diana DeGarmo has released her highly anticipated second studio album GEMINI through Jimmy Buffett’s new music label, Cherry Bomb Records. Recorded in Los Angeles with her longtime pal, Dylan Glatthorn, GEMINI displays a fresh sound for the American sweetheart. It is Big Band Country, combining flavors of western swing, rock, blues, R&B, soul, and more; plus a lush, romantic ballad with Diana DeGarmo’s real-life husband, Ace Young. “If Dolly Parton and Bette Midler had a love child, she would be named GEMINI,” DeGarmo declares. Diana DeGarmo’s GEMINI, including the single “Lickety-Split," a toe tappin’, heart thumpin’ high energy dittie about how sometimes in life, you gotta get going and not stand in your own way is available on Apple Music, Spotify and all digital retailers. As a big “American Idol” fan, I thought

this would be a great time to sit down with Diana for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

Were you always a performer or when did it start?

I have been performing as long as I can remember. My mom says I came out of the womb singing and dancing. I was the kid in traffic that would sing to the cars next to us.

You became nationally known in 2004, when you appeared on “American Idol.” Do you remember how that happened?

I went to an audition and stood in line like everybody else. I had already been singing for like 10 years, and I knew I wanted and needed my career to go to the next level. I figured if I got on TV, I could be seen by lots of people and hoped it would jumpstart my career.

Did the top 12 become close and are you still close? Who are you closest with?

Some did, and some still live in the competition. I am actually closer with people from other seasons, but I am still close with Matt, Amy and Jasmine from my season.

You sing, you have been on TV, in Movies and in Theater. Is there one you prefer more, and if so why?

I have always just considered myself a performer. Just give me a platform and let me

entertain you. Although, I do love being live on stage. That energy is unbeatable! It’s fascinating and wonderful.

You have done many Broadway shows and tours. Do you have a favorite role?

You have to find a way to connect yourself to the character, and through the process I have been shocked on some roles that I really enjoy. For example, Penny in “Hairspray.” One of my other favorites is Lucy in “Jekyll and Hyde.” It hard to pick a favorite as you grow a relationship to each character.

You married season 5 contestant Ace Young. As a huge “AI” fan, I am dying to know how you guys met, and how did he propose?

Ace and I met in 2010 in the Broadway revival of “Hair.” We were cast as the leads and our director came to us the first day of rehearsal, and told us how the company’s connection was like magic and she needed the two of us to know each other well. She then suggested we hang out as much as possible. We did the show for a few months and created an incredible friendship. Then about a year later the universe kept bringing us together and the friendship evolved into love. We kind of got together and never separated. When he asked me to marry him on the season 11 finale of “AI,” I was totally

Because I am a live performer, we wanted the record to feel like you brought the show home with you. Dylan Glatthorn is a musical chameleon and he helped me. We got together for six sessions and we wrote…it was like lightening in a bottle. We wrote 14 of the 16 songs in those sessions. I feel so lucky that Dylan got to show how talented he is with this record. My precious hubby produced the record and he was able to help me with all my ideas and frame the picture. I am a Gemini and that’s where the name came from.

How was it to record a romantic song with your hubby?

We wrote the song seven years ago, with no intensions of recording it. It was shortly before our wedding and we had our first dance song picked out already. However, after we wrote this song we turned to each other and realized that it was our first dance song. We have held on to this song this long, and when we needed one more song for this album, we realized it was the perfect song to put on this record. What does the future hold for you? I’m hoping to take Gemini out on the road, but it is very stressful because we are self producing everything. I love that I am finally getting the chance to do things my way. In addition, for the first time, Ace and I are doing a Cabaret together.

shocked. However, it was so nice to celebrate with people that have been such a big part of our lives. What do you do for fun? Part of fun for me is creating music, but we also love hiking, as we are big nature nerds.

How did your new Album, GEMINI, come about, and how did you pick the name?

Gemini came about around three years ago. I hadn’t recorded in awhile. I was like artistically stagnant, and forcing creativity creates nothing good, so I took a break. All of a sudden I had this vision after a pride event in New York after seeing a bunch of Drag Queens performing. I realized life was so short, and I didn’t want to be boxed into what the world thought I should sing. So I made the record I wanted to, and I hope my fans love it and see how much fun I had. I call the record Big Band Country.

Here's your latest L Word revival casting update Each new press release brings us closer to the TV event of 2019. We are referring, obviously, to The L Word: Generation Q, the Showtime series that will matter more than all other Showtime programming that has ever existed. We already know that Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig and Leisha Hailey are back, still living the lesbian high life in Los Angeles, only now their paths will cross with fresh faces played by Arienne Mandi (Baja), Leo Sheng (Adam), Jacqueline Toboni (Easy) and Rosanny Zayas (Orange is the New Black). And just announced, the cast expands with Olivia Thirlby (Juno) and our favorite lesbian stand-up comic Fortune Feimster (The Mindy Project), as well as Lex Scott Davis (The First Purge) and Sophie Giannamore (Transparent). We also finally have a premiere date, and it's as though Showtime heard us refer to this revival as “Lesbian Christmas and decided to make it so: the eight-episode series drops Sunday, Dec. 8. Thank you, Ms. Santa.

Romeo San Vicente is counting the days.

Will Can You Keep A Secret? revive the rom-com?

We, as a people, need and deserve more romantic comedies than studios have been giving us lately. The world is overrun with superheroes instead of meet-cutes, and we consider this to be a moviebased hate crime. It's so dire out there that sometimes we find ourselves watching those terrible Hallmark films just so we can have a taste. Coming soon, then, to quench our desire, is Can You Keep A Secret? Based on the best-selling novel by Sophie Kinsella, this story's meet-cute is more like a meet-terrifying, when a young woman (Alexandra Daddario, so good in the underrated We Have Always Lived in the Castle) spills all her secrets to a man (Tyler Hoechlin, Everybody Wants Some!) on a plane when they think they're going to crash. When they don't die young, she learns that he's her new employer. Along for the romantic turbulence is Kimiko Glenn from Orange is the New Black, and her Orange co-star, Laverne Cox, who, based on her IMDb roster of upcoming projects, is currently from pretty much everywhere and everything. Hurry up, movie, and teach us to laugh at love again. Romeo San Vicente

8 Proactive Ways Couples Can Face Down Their Debt Demons Together

1

Relationships are hard enough as it is, but throw money into the mix and it becomes a recipe for certain disaster. It doesn't have to go down like that though. Your relationship can survive a financial crisis – yes, even a menacing mound of debt – if you can both get on the same page and work together to solve the problem.

Avoid the Blame Game

Remember, it takes two to tango, and in most cases you didn’t get into debt all alone. Before tempers flare and you both say and do things you regret, take a breather, regroup, and recognize that your current situation isn’t the fault of one person. Even if a recent debt is the sole work of your partner – say, from a gambling addiction – getting angry and blowing your top won’t help. Go through your emotions responsibly and concentrate on nipping the immediate issue in the bud – counseling may be necessary for this – before coming up with a plan of attack to get back in the black.

2

Pay Off Your Worst First

Once you have a handle on your debt and resolve yourself to proactively eliminate it, go hard. Debt won’t dwindle away if you’re passive about it. Attack the problem head on to keep it contained. “Pay off your worst first,” says Steve Anzuoni, financial expert at Fairway Financial. “Sit with each other and gather your statements and pay down the higher-interest cards first.” Financial expert Harrine Freeman suggests a similar approach. “Set up payments plan with creditors,” she says. “Pay off old accounts first, then focus on paying down current debt. Keep credit card balances at 20% or less of the credit limit.”

38 | Hotspots.LGBT

3

Steer Clear of Financially Stressful Situations in the Future

Hindsight is 20/20 as they say, and this adage should absolutely apply to your finances. If you’ve gotten yourself in a hole, start digging yourself out and don’t look back. Also be wary of new situations that can affect the hard work you’ve done to get back on track. Your relationship can only handle so much stress, and it’s not fair to either of you to go into situations – even ones that seem like good moves financially – that will put the whole arrangement in jeopardy. “I coach couples that financial stress can bring out or aggravate problems in a marriage that would not have otherwise have arisen,” says Elliott Katz, author. “They should avoid getting into financially stressful situations even if it will be profitable in the long term but will cause stress to them in the short term.”

4

Reduce Your Spending Stat!

It may seem like an obvious tip to cut back your spending considerably when you’re in debt, but you’d be surprised at how many people keep swiping those cards even when there’s a problem. Freeman suggests reducing the overall household spending by 30% to increase your monthly cash flow to pay off debt. It’ll be a sacrifice for a while, but desperate times call for desperate measures if you want that debt burden off your back.

5

Set Up Payment Alerts to Stay on Track

If you have trouble remembering to pay bills, use technology to help you. Set reminders when bills are due and to be notified when account balances are low. Also set up overdraft protection if you’re prone to overdrawing your account so you can at least cut back the fees you’re charged.

Hotspots.LGBT | 39

6

Accept That You re Not the Joneses, and That s OK

A lot of the time, couples go into debt trying to keep up with friends, family and neighbors – perhaps even more so for queer couples. You may be able to keep up for a while, but if you’re spending money on things you can’t afford just to look like you can, it’ll come back to bite you eventually. Try to be happy with what you have or else work harder to improve your financial situation (picking up side gigs, furthering your education, asking for a promotion at work, getting a better-paying job, etc.) so that you can actually afford the things you want to buy as status symbols. Or, ya know, finally convince yourself that money doesn’t buy happiness.

Make It Clear Who Handles What Financial Responsibilities and When

7

Nobody wants to accept the responsibility of handling the relationship’s finances – especially with all that can go wrong – but somebody has to do it. Make it clear which one of you that will be and create a budget and bill-paying schedule together so you can hold one another accountable and stay on track. “Discuss who will manage the finances, who pays what bill, what finances will be joint, where finances will be managed, when finances will be managed, how finances will be managed currently and in the future, and how expenses and bills will be paid,” Freeman advises.

8

Enlist the Help of a Financial Planner If You re In Too Deep

If you’re already in debt, the last thing you need is another expense. However, if the expense is to help you get out of the red, you get a pass. Sometimes you need help, especially if you have zero idea what you’re doing with your money or how to manage it. Just make sure you’re hiring a reputable financial planner. You don’t need some hack all up in your bills charging you an arm and a leg for advice and planning that has no merit.

Things That Make You Go

Hmmm…

By Troy Maillis

The Gays Call The Shots You know your company might be in trouble when the gays take to Twitter and the hashtags start trending. First it was Equinox and now it’s CVS. The hashtag #BoycottCVS began trending following news the company plans to cut reimbursements for women who receive birth control through the mail. On top of that, CVS Health Corp. is allegedly one of the largest donors to Trump’s reelection campaign. Other companies facing backlash for financial connections to Trump include Versace, Estee Lauder, Revlon, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, and Marvel Entertainment. I find it comical that three of those companies are major players in the fashion industry.

In addition to dropping your Equinox memberships, it might be time to switch to Walgreens. The gays have spoken. Source: Out.com

If Not Now, Then When?

It’s up for debate when children should start learning that gay people actually exist on this planet. Is it up to the parents to educate their kids? Is it up to the school system? Or is it up to television and pop culture in general? Then of course we have the religious fanatics with their own opinions. Phil Vischer, the co-creator of popular television series Veggie Tales, thinks children are being “forced” to watch LGBTQ-inclusive programming. “Parents are definitely going to have to deal with a growing LGBT presence in children’s media,” Phil Vischer told The Christian Post. “It’s going to show up more and more as the world has decided that LGBT issues are in the same categories as race and civil rights issues. So to say you shouldn’t have a same-sex couple on Sesame Street is the equivalent of saying you shouldn’t have a black couple on Sesame Street.”Children are inquisitive, open-minded creates. It’s in their nature, and it’s about time we give them the benefit of the doubt to deal with reality and ask questions. With everything else going on in the world, is it really that shocking to see two male carrots holding hands? Source: Advocate.com

Know Your History

Did you know a former President made it illegal for the US Government to employ homosexuals? In Executive Order 10450 in 1953, President Eisenhower (of course a Republican) bowed to the pressures of Senator McCarthy’s ‘witch hunts’ which claimed that not only Communists but also gays were betraying American secrets to the Russians. These laws were not repealed until 1975, and not until 1995 were gays allowed to receive federal security clearances. We take labels serious these days, but it’s easy to forget certain terms have a legitimate origin. For instance, the word “Lesbian” has its roots in Greek poetry. A resident of the island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea, the Greek poet Sappho was a lesbian. She lived around 600 B.C. and wrote simple, passionate poems about her love for women. The word lesbian thus came to describe a homosexual {woman;} it was first used in 17th century France. Source: Funtrivia.com

This new restaurant is a huge open space with rows of dining tables in the center and deep freezers and ice tables surrounding the peripheral of the room. With seating that can accommodate up to 12

people, this would be a great place to bring a huge group. The décor is modern with a nod to the Asia culture. The place was very clean and smelled fresh, despite the fact we were surrounded by a sea of raw seafood. For one price ($24.95, $11.95 for the kiddies under 10), it’s all-you-can-eat at

“Cook-your-own food” restaurants are a lot of fun. Romantic fondue places, hip Japanese grills and spicy Korean barbeque joints have been popular since the 1960’s. What’s the new craze, you ask? Hot Pot! The House of Asia Hot Pot in Lauderdale Lakes is a hidden paradise of fresh meats, seafood and vegetables just waiting to

the House of Asia Hot Pot. Once seated at your table, you will notice a recessed hot plate in front of each place setting. Now it is decision time…select your choice of broth base: The Signature Base (sour pineapple seafood base), Tum Yum Base (sour and spicy), Coconut Tum Yum Base (sour and spicy), Kim Chi Base (spicy), Miso Base, Sichuan Base (spicy) or Curry Base. Pick your favorite and soon it is delivered to the hot plate to warm for the meal. Implements to assist you in cooking your food…a ladle and small Japanese wire strainer…are also presented. I chose the Signature Base and it paired well with everything that followed.

I decided to try this new experience out in courses, building the broth’s flavor profile with each succession. Veggie and pork dumplings cooked in the sour pineapple goodness was a great start. Be sure to head over to the “sauces area” where you can play chef and mix or amp up the Asia condiments with other tantalizing ingredients. Next, time for seafood and what a spread they offer! Since it is buffet style, I selected a few things I might not normally order if I was limited to only one entree. Blue crab, jumbo shrimp,

crawfish, mussels and clams all took a dip in my hot pot!

After my seafood orgy, the broth was perfected primed. Time to head on to the main course…a meat, veggie and noodle soup! Back to the buffet I went and grabbed some fatty beef, pork belly, lamb, corn on the cob, bok choy, quail eggs, Enokitake mushrooms, bean sprout and Udon noodles. It only takes a couple of minutes in the boiling broth until everything is perfectly cooked and ready to devour. With so many types of bases and ingredients to choose from, you’ll certainly never have the same meal at House of Asia Hot Pot. I’m feeling even more adventurous after this trip and might even try the frog legs next time!

Warmed Up and Ready to Run Actress Jillian Bell talks gay running friends and her plan to showcase more LGBTQ stories By Chris Azzopardi Rest assured, I’m not spoiling anything when I say Jillian Bell runs a lot in Brittany Runs a Marathon. All that sweat and all those tears aren’t exactly taken from the 35-year-old actress’ life – in case you hadn’t noticed, this is about Brittany and her running – but it could very well metaphorically dovetail with Bell’s career and the infinite miles she’s clocked to get to her own finish of sorts: a starring role. For her first lead part in a film, Bell portrays out writer-director Paul Downs Colaizzo’s real-life best friend in his heartfelt debut feature, which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival in February. When we first meet Brittany, her life is in shambles. Landlord issues, job issues, friend issues, and according to her doctor, a less-than-ideal BMI issue. So she runs. Short jaunts at first, then longer, steadier stretches. But as she trains for a marathon, Brittany learns that self-acceptance and personal growth aren’t just the result of going the literal distance.

Starring concurrently in bisexual director Lynn Shelton’s Sword of Trust, which premiered recently at SXSW, Bell’s credits also include a smattering of comedic TV series like Comedy Central’s Workaholics and Idiotsitter. Film-wise, she starred alongside Scarlett Johansson and Kate McKinnon in the bachelorette-party-gone-wrong farce Rough Night and 22 Jump Street, her mainstream breakthrough, playing the scene-stealing, deadpanning rival to Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill’s doofus cop duo. Bell phoned recently to chat about wine runs with a dear gay friend, shooting a scene with Bob the Drag Queen and her commitment to telling LGBTQ stories.

72 | Hotspots.LGBT

In real life, do you have any gay friends who’d run a marathon with you? (My friend) Kyle would actually be amaaaazing at running a marathon. He would be cheering the entire time. The only thing: He would want to stop midway to just grab a little bit of rosé, which would make us very sick for the rest of the marathon.

Conveniently, he might already have that in his Hydro Flask as you run. You know the ones that are attached to the hat and you just slurp out of them? That would be Kyle’s situation. But he’d be a blast. We’d have so much fun. We’d probably laugh the whole time.

Do you have LGBTQ friends in your life who’ve pushed you to be a better version of yourself in the way that Brittany’s gay friend, Seth, does in the film? Absolutely. One of my best friends is Fortune Feimster. She’s hysterical. She is the coolest friend of mine. We did (The Groundlings’) Sunday Company together and then we ended up living next to each other in apartments. Then, when she moved into a house, I moved into a house nearby. I keep telling her I’m stalking her for the rest of her life. She’s had me on her podcast and we’ve talked a lot about our careers because we’ve both been very blessed to have some great stuff happen. She’s always encouraging me; I’m always encouraging her. And she’s kind of my touchstone of someone who just makes me very, very happy. I think she’s been so smart in her career – the decisions that she’s made and what she’s decided to do and what it says about her – and she’s one of my best friends and I’m a big fan of hers. I love Seth and how supportive he is of Brittany – but what I really love is that he’s not just the token gay best friend. He also has a whole, full life of his own. Remember when gay characters only existed in films for the sake of the female protagonist? This feels like progress. I know, I know. This was written by Paul and he is a gay man, and the character he wrote that was basically inspired by his own story is Seth. This

is sort of a love story for her of what she went through and how she achieved these goals, and Seth is a very important character in this movie. He’s always so positive and encouraging, and you’re right: He’s seen in the light that is different from a lot of films as the gay best friend. I think that that is such a wonderful and important thing. And of all the families portrayed in the film, he seems to have the most together, stable family unit. Yeah, he’s married, he has a kid, and all he wants is to have another kid and get in better shape in his life and he’s doing great. He’s a successful human being and that is important to showcase in film. It makes me really sad when it isn’t and so I’m just happy that our film is a part of doing something hopefully right.

Do you find that gay male directors have a special way or a different sensibility when it comes to telling a female-centered story? I can only speak to my relationship with Paul and how we worked together, and there were moments where we would just cry together and moments of great strength. And we had moments where we would laugh till we were on the floor. We just had each other to lean on throughout this whole process, and it was a big bonding moment. Not only was he doing this almost for the second time in his life, because it’s about his real-life best friend, but it was his first film that he was directing and that he wrote, so that was a huge achievement. We just had a really strong connection and we both were very passionate from the beginning about this story and how we weren’t sure if people would get it. We’re so excited now

These are real humans, this is a real human story.

that, for the most part, people are understanding what this story is about. That makes both of us very happy.

Before you began filming, you said it was going to be very challenging because of how the movie deals with women’s perceptions of their bodies. But you also were hoping it might be more therapeutic than difficult. Well, you’ve done the film. Was filming this like therapy? You know what? Both kind of happened. And I was expecting that. Sometimes you spiral out after these things, sometimes it’s therapeutic. It was both, but in a healthy way. It just sort of made me look at my relationship with my own body and how I was talking about myself. I can only speak from my perspective, but sometimes you’ll look at other people, some of your best friends, and think, “Oh, they’re all wonderful and beautiful and lovely and smart,” and then you’ll go home and you’ll say awful things to yourself that you would never say about anyone else. I just felt like this movie hits on that and how society treats you but also how you treat yourself. What it feels like to choose yourself for the first time. By doing this project, I also felt like I was running my own marathon. I didn’t really want to address (these themes) in either film or television unless it was doing it right, and this is the first film that I read that was sort of a transformation story, but it wasn’t like “girl gets skinny, girl has a better life.” To me, that’s very important to put out there for women and men. I shouldn’t say I’m surprised, but it’s been overwhelming how many men relate to that and how difficult it is when you don’t come out looking like Adonis. It’s a lot.

74 | Hotspots.LGBT

By the end of her journey, I was weeping. Because – shocker! – gay men have body image issues too. Awww. I’m so glad you liked the film and you related to it. This is why we did it. I haven’t seen a movie like this in a very long time, maybe not ever, where I thought, “These are real humans, this is a real human story.” There are raw emotions here, and there’s vulnerability in a way that’s so beautiful and isn’t always showcased in film. I just really wanted to be a part of that kind of storytelling.

Your filmography has been very LGBTQ-inclusive. As Alice in Rough Night, you were the perfect ally-friend to Blaire and Frankie, played by Zoë Kravitz and Ilana Glazer. Absolutely! We wanted to get them back together! I mean, how cute is that couple? And they were always fighting with each other and we were like, “You like each other! Get back together!” I was so happy with that ending too, because I don’t think I was around when they were shooting that part of the scene where they end up being back together at the end and I loved the way it was handled. It was so beautiful and real. Also beautiful: that cameo from Bob the Drag Queen, who was the DJ while you girls danced to “My Neck, My Back (Lick It).” Oh my goodness, Bob the Drag Queen. Amazing! We had a really good time. I think that was our second day of shooting, and I remember I was so nervous because my character was the one that had to know the dance perfectly because she holds onto her college memories for dear life. So I was in my own head about the dance – and then everybody else was losing their minds over Bob! I was like, “I’m so excited to be working with you too!” We were so thrilled that we got to work with Bob. While writing for SNL, do you recall any LGBTQ-oriented sketches you wrote? I’m trying to remember. It’s funny: I just did an interview today where they were showing a clip from something that I wrote and it was a sketch called “Your Mom Talks to Megan Fox,” and it was just a mother talking to Megan Fox and how funny that conversation would be. But, actually, I’ll be

honest with you: I did not get a lot of stuff on the air (laughs). I don’t remember most of my sketches, but I’ll say this: I don’t remember anything really making it on.

As Cynthia in Sword of Trust, you play a lesbian. Is this the first lesbian character you’ve played, and what can you tell us about her? I’m trying to think if it’s the first lesbian character I’ve played – it might be, technically! I will just say I believe it was originally going to a woman who’s a lesbian – I wanna say that (laughs) – and they called me last minute because she had to go shoot another project, which is very exciting! But I’m hoping I did it justice. We had the best time shooting. Michaela (Watkins, who also stars alongside Bell in Brittany Runs a Marathon) and we were … I would say careful. We wanted to make sure they seemed like a real couple and they really cared about each other. I think that comes across in the movie, that they would do anything for each other. It’s really sweet.

As a comedian, are you conscious of what lines should and shouldn’t be crossed when it comes to queer content? Absolutely. One of my good friends is non-binary and we’ve been trying to figure out a way to showcase more artists in the LGBTQ+ community. We would love to do something where there’s an actress who wants to work with a new up-andcoming director who is trans, or a non-binary short film where it’s showing them being the one who saves the day when there’s a plane attack. We are just like, “What are interesting stories we haven’t seen before in making people superheroes or just showing normal life?” Like in our movie, with Seth.

Just showcasing more of that. There was this sort of unofficial questionnaire online, and they were asking a bunch of questions about what they have and haven’t seen in film and television. The amount of LGBTQ people that wanted to be seen but also not killed off immediately was so upsetting to me and it opened up my eyes to the fact that that happens and how sad that is and, you know, if they’re gonna do a remake of Harry Met Sally, what is the gay version? I’m curious to see that. I would love to see that. I would pay for a ticket to go see that film because we’ve seen it the other way for so long. Speaking of role reversal, what’s the latest on the Disney remake of Splash with Channing? Yeah, we’re trying – we’re trying! It’s being written right now. Really excited about it. Anything to work with him again because he is a doll of a human being and, I mean, it would be such a dream come true. I would be playing, basically, the Tom Hanks part, and what is more thrilling than that? And, to boot, Channing as a merman. Yes, Channing as a merman! I’m giving the people what they want. That’s what I’m trying to do.

At the very least you’re giving me what I want, so thank you. Yes, I’m doing this for you, Chris. (Laughs)

Jamilah Sabur

The exhibition reception will be held on Thursday, Sept. 12, 7– 9pm. Admission is $10 for the general public and free for MOCA members and North Miami residents.

The South Florida Cultural Consortium (SFCC) is the largest government-sponsored grant program in the U.S. for artists living in Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Hundreds of artists apply each year. This year’s exhibition will showcase 13 artists including: Nellie Appleby, Felecia Carlisle, Domingo Castillo, Jennifer Clay, Katrina Miller, Reginald O’Neal, Edison Peñafiel, Sebastian Ruiz, Jamilah Sabur, Vivien Segel, Misael Soto, Amber Tutwiler and Agustina Woodgate. Exhibiting artist, Jamilah Sabur, who is from Miami and most recently had a solo exhibition at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, CA, makes work informed by time and incorporates rich layers of meaning in her multidisciplinary practice. Sabur will present both recent and new work in the exhibition.

Reginald O’Neal - Stranger 1 & 2 Oil on canvas

Miami-based artist, Reginald O’Neal, will present paintings inspired by his own experiences and family life from growing up in Overtown. Although his work is personal in nature, his paintings resonate with larger universal issues pertaining to trauma, violence, and incarceration.

Fort Lauderdale-based artist Edison Peñafiel, the 2019 recipient of the Florida Prize from the Orlando Museum of Art, creates largescale installations that address displacement and forced migration. Peñafiel’s “Land Escape,” makes its Miami debut in the exhibition. It was recently created during a residency in Corsicana, Texas. “It was a great privilege to work with the selected artists to determine what work would create a dynamic, complex, and varied exhibition,” said curator Amy Galpin.

“This exhibition brings together some of the region’s most innovative and accomplished artists, and I am grateful to work with the talented team at MOCA to conceptualize this exhibition.”

This exhibition celebrates the originality and potential of these 13 South Florida artists, who continue to pave the way as expressive leaders of their generation. These artists are not grouped by theme or approach, but instead they are selected because of the rigor for which they approach their work and the excellence they routinely demonstrate in their respective practices. Several of these artists embrace abstract art, deeply rooted in conceptualism and objects informed by identity and the political present. The artists use traditional techniques including painting, sculpture and video among other media. “It is an honor to showcase the diverse cultural works of artists who are from our own South Florida region,” said MOCA Executive Director Chana Budgazad Sheldon. “By making contemporary art created by regional artists accessible to diverse audiences – especially underserved populations, we are sharing the various outlooks of South Florida artists.” For more information, visit miamidadepublicart.org/#fellowship.
