Things That Make You Go

Hmmm…

By Troy Maillis

Far From Home

On any given day, as many as 10,000 LGBTQ young people do not have a safe place to sleep. In some U.S. cities, 30% of the homeless adult population is LGBTQ. Alphonso David, the President of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), testified in a hearing before the House Financial Services Committee’s Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee addressing anti-LGBTQ discrimination in housing and lending. “No one should be turned away from an apartment, kicked out of their home, or sent back to the street simply because of who they are or whom they love. LGBTQ people and

our families demand fair and equal access to housing opportunities. We want affordable homes, we want quality schools, and we want to feel safe when we lay our heads down at night,” said HRC President Alphonso David. Source: HRC

Can’t Hold Us Down

Monica Toro Lisciandro, a teacher specializing in musical theater at Covenant Christian School in Palm Bay, was quickly fired after the school received an anonymous call complaining about Lisciandro’s personal relationship with a woman and her participation in LGBTQ+ support groups. “I want kids to see me and know that you can be a Christian and you can be gay. You can be gay, you can teach at a Christian school,” Lisciandro told Florida Today. Palm Bay community members derailed the process of passing a human rights ordinance in 2016 that would have included LGBTQ+ individuals. The school is now “aggressively pursuing another teacher to finish the class and (direct) our play.” Yeah, good luck finding another musical theater teacher to replace the ousted LGBTQ one. New York-based center Apicha Community Health Center, which serves people of color and the LGBT+ community, was told that it could not run Facebook ads to promote public awareness of PrEP because it “hadn’t been authorized to run ads about social issues, elections or politics.” Well, at least that’s the official response Facebook provided. Facebook and CEO Mark Zuckerberg have recently received Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s wrath, and plenty of media coverage, for allowing political ads promoting downright lies to run on its platform. So obviously lies are ok, but ads promoting education and awareness are the devil. Since the removal of the ads, Apicha Center has taken matters into their own hands. Their team took to Instagram to post content created by and featuring API men talking about PrEP. Source: PinkNews.com

Stricker, Jade Turner, Morgan Unger and Tyler Whitaker. “This talented cast has been hand-selected to share and celebrate the story, music and lifestyle of this show on its irst national tour,” says Jimmy Buffett. “I am thrilled that this group of performers will transform theaters into Margaritaville each evening. Margaritaville started out as an idea, but now you can actually spend an evening there, and get your mind on island time.” It was a pleasure to sit down with Peter Michael Jordan who plays Brick, for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

Shelly Lynn Walsh & Peter Michael Jordan

At what age did you begin performing and how did it happen?

I believe I was 14 and it was my middle school musical of “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” My parents always thought it was a good idea that I should perform, but honestly I never auditioned like I said I would. But when I heard my school was going to put on “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” I auditioned as I always wanted to play Willie, and I got the part.

What was your first professional role?

This is my irst professional role, as I just graduated from Boston Conservatory last May.

How did you get cast in this “Jimmy Buffett's Escape To Margaritaville?” At the end of your senior year at the

conservatory you have a showcase in front of casting directors and agents. Prior to that we live stream our performance, and Camden Garcia (the son of Greg Garcia's son who co-wrote the book) saw the live stream and he knew that they were casting the show and thought that they may have interest in seeing me. He sent the video to his dad, and Greg contacted me and told me to send the video to the team. After seeing the video they sent me material to ilm and then I got cast.

Other than this role, what has been your favorite to play?

I would say my overall favorite is Mr. Mister in “The Cradle Will Rock.” That role was particularly special as it wasn't something that I cast as usually. It was fun to take on, and it was a great show that had a message that I could get behind.

What is your fantasy role?

It absolutely has to be Mama Rose is Gypsy.

What should our readers expect from this production of Jimmy Buffett's Escape To Margaritaville?

I think they de initely should expect the best of both

worlds. Jimmy Buffet fans can come and enjoy music and the island vibe of Jimmy, and regular theater goers can expect a full on Broadway show. I wouldn't necessarily say his music is normal Broadway, but the fact that they were able to make it into this fabulous show is special and unique. By: Johnson Chong

Many in the LGBTQ community have been traumatized by the current political climate, which feels inescapable. International yogi, meditation teacher, and author of the frank and funny new coming out auto biography “Sage Sapien: From Karma to Dharma,” gay author Johnson Chong offers 5 things that even a meditation newbie can do to calm the panic feel a little more hope and love on a daily basis. “Sometimes it can be extremely dif icult to understand what is going on in the bigger picture, especially when it seems like the world is falling apart,” says Chong. “We have the choice to either let our external environment bring us down or to accept it as it is, for better, or for worse. By 'accept,' I don't mean by succumbing to complacency. Complacency would be resigning to indifference, while acceptance means taking charge of our anger, and turning it into passionate/compassionate action. Activism and taking a stand is a whole other subject here, but on a more personal level, herewith are my 5 tips for self-care when dealing with a sense of panic. 46 | Hotspots.LGBT

My first piece of advice is that you need to give yourself full permission to feel everything that you are feeling. Without honoring the truth of our how emotional or not emotional we are, we create a fracture in ourselves, and perpetuate the okay-ness of not feeling whole. Panic is an intense mutation of fear where our heart might race, we may shake and tremble, sweat and even feel like we are losing our minds. We need to have a dialogue with our emotions, like we need to dialogue with an angry child who is throwing a temper tantrum. Fear and anger happen when we there are two con licting needs that are having trouble getting met. So in the same way, when an angry child will simmer down after he accepts that he will not get a popsicle for lunch, our fear can dial down so we can meet that fear halfway and understand why we fear what we fear. Understanding is key to softening out of heightened states of emotion, and that cannot happen if we don't give ourselves permission to feel our rawness.

#1

Take your feelings and turn them into conscious art.

Whether you want to dance it away, write it away, bake, body build or create a performance art piece, it is all up to you. Fear is an emotion. Animals experience fear, and then choose ight or light. The same physiological responses happen in human bodies. If fear doesn't go down the path of ight or light, then it crashes our entire system. Think of it as purposefully repurposing your pain.

#2

#3 Photos by Chad Wagner

Download Insight Timer, and try their free meditations.

I have a few on there (Johnson Chong www.insighttimer.com/sagesapien). And there are also many amazing teachers who have also put up free meditations for download. You can search by type, length, and even themes that resonate with you your current mental/emotional state. Even if you're extremely busy, download the meditation and play it while you're on the subway.

Hotspots.LGBT | 47

#4 Get a slow deep relaxing massage.

A monthly massage, if not biweekly, is a great self-care routine to take care of your muscles, calm the nervous system, and to soothe the emotions.

#5 Take the weekend o and go on retreat.

Whether it's yoga, meditation or writing, retreats are designed so that you can take the time out to pause and recalibrate. You get a moment to breathe and connect to nature, and re lect on what it is you really want, instead of worrying about the things that you cannot control. Easton Mountain Retreatis a spiritual retreat center for gay men in upstate New York that focuses on self-development, healing and transformation. (You can ind a list of LGBT retreats around the U.S. here.) If you don't have the means to get to a retreat, go to your state park with a bunch of friends, leave the phones in the car, take a long walk, and have deep, meaningful conversations over a camp ire or picnic. Or just ind a comfortable spot in your city park, unplug and watch the clouds or stare at the fountain. It's all about removing yourself from the daily grind, and remembering what is truly important in life.
