TIS THE SEASON TO BE THANKFULL Welcome to the Thanksgiving edition of Hotspots. Everyone reminds us that this is the time to show our appreciation and love for the things in life we often take for granted. It’s hard to ignore the amazing deals and offers out there as everyone scrambles to take advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Just remember, this season is about sharing love and caring for those who perhaps need it most. As we enter our 35th year in business, I am reminded of how proud I am of the people who have made Hotspots the iconic organization that it is today. We have moved far beyond just being a magazine, we are a multimedia organization with an emphasis on digital
content. While we still print 64 editions a year (including South and Central Florida), more people connect with Hotspots digitally through our social media networks, digital platforms and now, Hotspots Live. In fact, out digital reach is almost double that of print which is still at record numbers! That is why I want to say thank you to my Hotspots family and especially to you, our audience. More than 300,000 members of our vibrant LGBT community count on Hotspots every week, every month and every year. We are proud to be your voice and will be there to support you and our amazing community organizations every step along the way for the next 35 years and beyond!

Simó n Bolıv́ar died in 1830 in a farm named Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, which was at the time outside the city of Santa Marta. The native people of the region currently occupied by Santa Marta stood out for their masterful works of goldsmithing and engineering. Among them are the most developed urban sites of pre-Hispanic Colombia, such as the archaeological ruins of Pueblito Chayrama in the Tayrona National Park, the Lost City Teyuna in the upper Buritaca River and the La Reserva area, at the head of the Frıo ́ River in Swamp. In 1501 Rodrigo de Bastidas and Juan de la Cosa crossed the coast from the end of the Candle to Urabá . During that expedition they left some soldiers in the bay of Santa Marta, which Bastidas identified as a favorable place to develop an urban center. These soldiers were the first Europeans to mix with the local population. In 1514, the fleet of Pedrarias Dá vila arrived in the area and, after facing the natives, took several prisoners. After his departure, he was replaced by the merchant and banker Garcıá de Lerma at the head of the Interior. In 1528, he negotiated on behalf of Carlos V with the Welser family the colonization of Venezuela. However, this prohibition was not fulfilled, which exacerbated the conflicts between the new settlers and the traditional peoples of the region. Customs House, the first European building in America. During the 14th century, the Spanish conquerors expelled the Matunas, who occupied those lands, and razed the populations of other towns that inhabited the region. During those years, Santa Marta had many difficulties to consolidate as urban. During this period, the area was characterized by overcrowding, epidemics and famines and was primarily a transit site for conquerors and other adventurers who traveled to America in search of wealth. The most important was that of Gonzalo Jimé nez de Quesada, the founder of Santafé de Bogotá , who died of
leprosy after failing in his search for El Dorado. In turn, the advanced Pedro de Heredia passed through the current territory of Santa Marta before founding Cartagena. For its part, the Spanish war against the Taironas lasted for about a century, between 1501 and 1600. That year, Governor Juan Guiral Veló n sent an expedition of 200 soldiers who defeated them at the end of the year. More than seventy of their chiefs were sentenced to death. Some of them, such as Chief Cuchacique, suffered atrocious deaths. The survivors were displaced from their lands and forced to pay the Spanish campaign. After the definitive occupation of the territory, the attention of the government was concentrated in the slave trade in Cartagena and then Santa Marta depopulated and decayed. At the end of the 14th century, it was reduced to twenty houses and only had about sixty residents. At the beginning of the 17th century, King Felipe 3 appointed Francisco Martın ́ ez de Ribamontá n Santander as governor of Santa Marta, from whom the hero of Independence
Francisco de Paula Santander decides by direct line. By 1650 the city had eight blocks and about twenty houses on one floor. Its streets were narrow and dusty and its houses were built with brick, mud and reeds, and they were roofed with straw. In turn, during the 16th and 17th centuries it suffered dozens of pirate attacks, which looted and burned several times. To that end, between the 17th and 18th centuries the colonial authorities built six forts and two sailboats. During the last years of the Colony the city saw part of its architectural heritage emerge with works such as the Cathedral, the Customs House and the San Juan Nepomuceno Seminary. At the end of the 18th century, the city reached the Third Race13 and its population rose to 3,600 inhabitants

Things That Make You Go
Hmmm…
By Troy Maillis
Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (A Man After Midnight)
If you’re in doubt about your sexuality, perhaps talking to a sex therapist will give you the clarity you crave? Well that’s exactly what a married father of six did when he began to question his own sexuality—after a few too many drinks. “When I’m not drunk I’m 1,000,000% attracted to women only,” the 30-year-old wrote to sex expert Yana Tallon-Hicks. “I’m not attracted at all to men. I don’t like the way we smell, look, talk, our masculinity, facial hair, nothing.”
Shine Bright Like a Diamond At a time when many states have failed to pass
Then the buzz starts to hit. “When I’m drunk I’m down for anything!” he admits. “Once I’m at that level I literally want vagina, penis, and [all other variations of sexual anatomy.] All of it turns me on super bad and my wife knows this and she thinks it’s sexy.” In response to the query the sex therapist said to just go with it—especially since his wife is on board!
LGBTQ-inclusive laws and policies, cities are stepping up to ensure that all citizens are treated equally, according to a report issued today by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation. In Florida, eight cities earned over 85 points on the 2019 MEI despite hailing from a state without LGBTQ-inclusive statewide non-discrimination laws. Shining like beacons of hope, Fort Lauderdale, Gainesville, Oakland Park, Orlando, St. Petersburg, Tallahassee, Tampa and Wilton Manors earned one of HRC’s 59 MEI “All Star” designations. MEI All-Stars are cities nationwide that are excelling by advancing LGBTQ equality without relying on state law. “Florida is leading the way in the passage of local LGBTQ protections in the South,” said Nadine Smith, Executive Director of Equality Florida. “In communities large and small, across the political and geographic spectrum, local sexual orientation and gender identity protections cover 60% of the population.”

Oh, Dallas—we thought everything was supposed to be bigger in Texas? In August of 2019, far-right organizers, Super Happy Fun America, hosted a Straight Pride Parade in Boston. Naturally, other bigoted cities like Dallas followed suit with a Straight Pride event of their own. Much to their dismay, the event only attracted THREE supporters, two of whom also attended the Boston event. In fact, the attendees were outnumbered by pro-LGBTQ and anti-fascist protesters. “I knew that attendance would be low, but I couldn’t stop laughing when I saw that it was just them,” activist Soraya Colli told the Advocate. Better luck next time, guys—or maybe you should just crawl back under your rock? Source: The Advocate

The Myths On Sunscreen
I sit down with Dr. Matthew B. Zarraga
By: Carlos Marrero
OK my South Florida friends‌we know that we're supposed to wear sunscreen but there are a lot of us who are not doing a great job at it. We go to the beach and we use the excuse of needing vitamin D or perhaps the excuse that it's only going to be for an hour or that it's not really that big a deal because we're not fair-skinned. Shockingly, while skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US, less than 10% of Americans actually apply sunscreen every day. I'm going to tell the truth and
shame the devil, I am one of them but I am trying to be better. Sunscreen is the irst line of defense against the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays that can damage our skin and lead to skin cancer, and it is important to know the facts and the products that are available. Luckily for us I have an expert in the ield - my dermatologist, and Hotspots Advertiser, Matthew B. Zarraga, to help us with some of the myths and facts about SPF.
Will sunscreen prevent the body from absorbing vitamin D?
Your body makes vitamin D when your skin hits the sunlight. In theory, using sunscreen could prevent the body from absorbing vitamin D. However, most patients do not use enough sunscreen to completely block the sun or to prevent the body from making vitamin D.
If I have dark skin do I still need sunscreen?
Absolutely. Anyone, of any race, at any age, can develop a skin cancer. In fact, Bob Marley died of melanoma.
82 | Hotspots.LGBT
Can you still get a tan while wearing sunscreen?
Yes. Most people are able to still get a tan even while wearing sunscreen.
How long does a single application of sunscreen actually last?
Typically, sunscreen protects the skin for about 2 hours after application. However, if you sweat a lot or if you go swimming, these activities decrease the duration of ef icacy of sunscreen.
Can sunscreen be waterproof?
According to the FDA, sunscreen cannot be labeled as waterproof anymore. Sunscreens can only be labeled as water-resistant up to either 40 or 80 minutes.
I heard that sunscreen ingredients are dangerous and can itself cause cancer.
There are a few sunscreen ingredients that are under question as to their safety. According to the FDA, the only safe and effective ingredients are purely physical blockers, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
If I work in an office or it's a cloudy day… Do I still need to wear sunscreen?
It is smart to wear sunscreen every day. Even on a cloudy day, UV rays can penetrate through the clouds and can cause you to burn. It is quite common for patients to complain of severely bad sun burns on days when it is cloudy because they did not think they needed to wear sunscreen.
There are so many sunscreens on the market. Can you recommend some?
We offer a full line of sunscreens at ZRoc Dermatology, all of which are composed of only the ingredients
deemed safe by the FDA. My favorite is the Z-RO SUN Mattifying Powder Sunscreen since it is easy to apply, decreases shine and is small enough to carry in your pocket. Other sunscreens I recommend include Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection, TiZo3 Primer Sunscreen and Elta MD UV Replenish.

Meet My Friend
LUIS APONTE Designer of Luis Aponte Line
Luis Aponte is a Miami based clothing line specializing in menswear and women swear apparel created by Founder Luis Aponte and Co-founder Melida Sanchez. Melida is from New York, Aponte from Puerto Rico, both graduated from Miami International University of Art and Design. The Luis Aponte line launched in February 2014 during the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week with a mini collection of 6 six interchangeable pieces. Aponte was selected as Peroni's Emerging Designer in 2015, designed a collection for Miami Swim Week in 2016, presented designs at Fort Lauderdale Fashion Week and was handpicked by Macy's to be part of The Market at Macy's in Fort Lauderdale and in Atlanta respectively in 2019.
When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career as a designer?
Growing up I was talented, however so are many of my family members, therefore I never thought of my talent as something special. I pursued my undergraduate degree in biomedical sciences where I decided to follow the family business and I was accepted into graduate school to do my Pharmaceutical Doctorate. It was during my second year in Pharmacy School, after watching a whole season of “Project Runway, that
102 | Hotspots.LGBT
everything changed for me. I felt compelled to sew myself some clothing, and that's when I felt I found my true calling. My path veered as I decided to change careers and follow my instinct to become the apprentice of Mara Garcia, a local designer back in Puerto Rico who welcomed me into her atelier and taught me about pattern making/construction. In 2012 I moved to Miami and inished my Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Design.
What role do you think social media plays in fashion
today?
Social media provides a great platform to advertise products by facilitating sales and allowing us to reach a broader audience. I still remember the irst time I had someone walk into my store because she had followed me since the beginning and wanted to meet me in person. The feeling of appreciation from someone who admires my work is gratifying. This experience exposes the power of social media and how we connect with others through it.
What made you want to expand your business from designing women's clothing to men's wear?
I started making some pieces for myself and people would stop me on the street to ask me what designer I was wearing. I quickly realized there was a niche in the market for my designs and began to work on the sizing scale. Our menswear line is based on the Miami vibe as we use locally sourced fabrics and create our own prints.
How would you define the Luis Aponte man?
The Luis Aponte man is not afraid of making a statement and being complimented. He is a tropical man looking for comfort yet fashionable pieces. Our materials are breathable and soft, perfect for our tropical weather.
Can you describe your line's aesthetic?
The aesthetic of the line is very playful with design details. We love integrating
fun prints and textures into the collections. We implement sustainability by the printing process we use and source organic materials for production. We are a local company and we produce everything in house in our micro factory based in Miami.
Do you have a routine for your creative process, and what inspires you?
I always like to center my thoughts around an idea, like for example a movie or a place. Melida researches the trends and colors for the season to compliment my idea. The idea
Hotspots.LGBT | 103
evolves into sketches, we proceed to mix and match the ideas until we have a cohesive story to tell. Every collection tells a story which is depicted by the prints, design elements, color scheme, fabric, to the inal pictures and the feeling the collection evokes.
What is your favorite part about being a designer?
I love making patterns and sewing however I enjoy the creative process of design as well.
What was your biggest challenge when going out and starting your own line?
My biggest challenge was to be a new name in the industry. We heard a lot of "No" going from door to door selling our product. I remember when we inally heard the irst "yes" which made everything worth it.
What continues to drive you?
During the past few years I discovered the joy fashion brings me goes beyond just making beautiful pieces. I found a beautiful connection between my talent and the privilege of creating jobs. It is soulfully rewarding knowing that people can bring food to their tables by believing in my creativity.
Who is your dream person/celebrity/public figure you'd love to design for, and why?
I would love to dress Ricky Martin. Growing up in Puerto Rico he has always been an icon that has brought glory and pride to our Island. As a gay man he has been a pioneer in our community and has paved the way for many of us.
104 | Hotspots.LGBT
What is next for Luis Aponte?
We would like to bring Luis Aponte to other locations, encourage the "made in Miami" movement and continue with our concept of aordable couture. Our goal is to promote sustainable fashion for men and women.

Screen Queen: The Johns By: Chris Azzopardi
Polyester
John Waters staged a live chicken decapitation for his 1969 debut feature Mondo Trasho. In the following year's Multiple Maniacs, he made anal sex with rosary beads a thing. And in Pink Flamingos, Divine, his drag muse, committed fully to her art by eating real dog crap for a scene. So by the time 1981 rolled around, the King of Filth was over it, ready to move away
108 | Hotspots.LGBT
from the ilth and ind some fresh inspiration via the 1950s. He looked to bygone moms, speci ically the classic trope of the overburdened middle-class housewife. With a beefed-up budget of $300,000, he rounded up his motley crew of John Waters regulars, including Divine as Christian mother-of-two Francine Fishpaw, for Polyester, released in 1981. A hysterically melodramatic spoo ing of the American suburbs, the ilm holds up as one of Waters' inest comedies – due in large part to the game cast, including Edith Massey as Francine's debutante friend Cuddles, who regularly dispenses basic-
mom-type inspirational bromides to soothe Francine. And with Tab Hunter playing opposite Divine as, naturally, the hunk who swoops in to save her from domestic agony – his name, Todd Tomorrow, is over-the-top perfection – Polyester nudged Waters closer to mainstream notoriety and would eventually give him enough household-name clout to make Hairspray and Serial Mom. Among the supplemental features on Criterion Collection's new Waters-approved Blu-ray edition is a feature where Hunter, in an interview shot several years before his death in 2018, appears on-camera to discuss playing Todd despite his agent's advice to pass. In a separate interview conducted by out ilm critic Michael Musto speci ically for this special edition, Waters discusses various aspects of the ilm, including the movie's wideranging smells (the Criterion edition includes an “Odorama” scratch-andsniff card), Tab Hunter's kiss with Divine, and Divine's evolution from monster to heralded sympathetic housewife.
Rocketman
Elton John's on-the-surface glitzy, largerthan-life story can't be contained to a mere biopic. The shiny gay costumes, the shiny gay glasses. The drugs, the overdose. The parental rejection. But then, of course, the story's greatest turn of events: how Elton John rose above it all to become, well, Elton John. So Rocketman, fortunately, is a razzledazzle, Broadway-big musical with an
apt surrealist lair that arranges the elements – the dark, the decadent – of Elton's life and career into a wild, otherworldly fever dream (it even leans proudly into its subject's innate queerness, unlike last year's Bohemian Rhapsody). In the ilm, directed by Dexter Fletcher, we meet Elton as he makes a very Elton entrance, storming into the scene with fully bedazzled devil horns, feathered wings and gem-encrusted heart specs to go to … rehab. Amid parental pushback on his passion for music and his homosexuality, a critical career moment occurs at one of L.A.'s historically famous music venues, the
Troubadour, where Elton jams on the piano, playing his hit “Crocodile Rock.” When he hilariously levitates, the crowd joining him in mid-air as he hovers over his piano bench, Elton's life is no longer a match for reality. Only a supernatural lourish can truly register his emerging stardom. Capturing the essence of Elton with precision, charm and his own singing voice – and the heartbreak of having your parents reject you – is Welsh actor Taron Egerton. His magnetic presence is such a staggering revelation it's impossible to imagine what Rocketman would be like without him carrying it on his sequined shoulders. Included among the supplemental features is “Becoming Elton John,” where Egerton talks about transforming into John; during the short feature, John, executive producer, discusses watching the ilm, calling it simultaneously “eerie” and “satisfying.” Clips on staging the musical numbers and the costumes, as well as Egerton's studio session (where John gives Egerton free rein), are also among the loaded special features.
Booksmart
Nerd-friends Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein) have a bright future ahead of
them. Amy is going to Columbia, and Molly is off to Yale. They worked hard to get into those Ivy League schools and have been rewarded accordingly… and, wait, the kids who drank and smoked and partied also got accepted to those schools? So Amy and Molly lose their shit, realizing that amid extracurricular's and college-prep courses they could've been playing beer pong, getting wasted, and waking up next to boys and, in the case of the casually queer Amy, girls. In a crazy, Superbad-type effort to squeeze in very last bit of drunken, drugged-out, jail-level fun they didn't have in high school, Amy and Molly go all out the
night before they graduate from Crockett High School for good. This is it. Their last shot at being remembered as more than total bores. A riotous, tender coming-of-age teen-friendship romp, director Olivia Wilde's directorial debut modernizes and diversi ies the classic schoolcomedy with a cast representative of the queer experience: there's Amy, but there's also George (the great Noah Galvin, who, at one point, unleashes a perfectly timed hiss) and Alan (Austin Crute), a pair of theater a icionados who, like other well-rounded side characters in the ilm, eschew cookie-cutter stereotypes.
They are each their own messy person (look no further than George's appropriately melodramatic take on an Alanis classic). They read like real people, people you could've known. In that sense, Wilde's biggest triumph is its authenticity, but Booksmart is also a weird, emotional and wonderfully queer-inclusive creation, which wisely stays rooted in the ilm's central, changing friendship. Featured on the ilm's Blu-ray release is a contextual feature with the cast and Wilde, as well as a peek into the delightful “dance fantasy” scene. As editor of Q Syndicate, the international LGBT wire service, Chris Azzopardi has interviewed a multitude of superstars, including Cher, Meryl Streep, Mariah Carey and Beyoncé.
