Alegría Returns
Cirque Du Soleil Updates Iconic Show By: Scott Holland A production destined to change the history of the company, Cirque du Soleil irst presented Alegrıá in April 1994, launching an emblematic show that was to win over more than 14 million spectators in 255 cities in 19 years of touring through the end of 2013. The show’s theme song, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1995 and continues to be a fan favorite, is the most listened-to Cirque du Soleil song on YouTube. In light of its 25th anniversary, Cirque du Soleil is revisiting its legendary Alegrıá through today’s lens―including new costumes and set design, a renewed acrobatic

vocabulary, and new musical arrangements ―to ensure it is as inspiring now as it was at the time of its creation in 1994. With its signature songs, stunning acrobatics, memorable characters and enchanting artistry that have helped de ine the Cirque du Soleil aesthetic, Alegrıá is the reincarnation of a classic, reinterpreted for the age, and rekindled to inspire fans―old and new alike. Beloved by fans around the world, Alegrıá (‘joy’ in Spanish) is returning to the Big Top once more to share its timeless story of resilience and hope. The classic power struggle of old-meets-new has been
reinterpreted through today’s lens. Carried by an intangible wind of change, an emerging movement strives to shake the established order, instilling hope and renewal to bring light and harmony to their kingdom in decay. With its joyful spirit, Alegrıá is a vital, energizing force driven by a thirst for a brighter world. It was a pleasure to sit down with one of the principle players of Alegria, Vincent Lavoie, who is also a member of the LGBTQ community, just a couple weeks before Alegria comes to South Florida Under the Big Top, next to Hard Rock Stadium from December 13, through February 17.
At what age did you start doing any kind of gymnastics? I started at around 8 years old. I joined a summer camp for tumbling, and really liked the sport and continued on.
When did you start taking it seriously? I was around 10 when I moved to a more advanced group and we started doing competition and I fell in love with the whole gymnastics thing.
Where have you competed? I have competed a bit all over the globe. My irst international competition was Russia, but I have been to Germany, England, France, Mexico, Bulgaria and all over the US.
When did you realize gymnastics can be your career? I wanted to join the circus since the age of 11 when I saw the DVD of Alegria, and I fell in love with the show and the Power track number. It was at that point I told my dad that I wanted to join Cirque, and that would be my career.
Vincent Lavoie How did you get hired by Cirque Du Soleil? The scouts form the company come to the major events, and I started talking with them. After speaking to them I came home and worked on my demo videos and uploaded them to their website. The rest is history!
You perfromed in La Nouba in Orlando. How long were you there and how was that experience? I was there for 3 years and it was my irst Cirque show. I was excited to be living the dream. It was good to have my irst experience in a residential show, and have a normal life. Do you have a boyfriend? If yes, how does it work traveling if no, what are you looking for in a man? No, I do not have a boyfriend. I am looking for someone who understands the klind of life that I am living right now and that doesnt have a problem with me putting career in front of some relationship aspects. Also, someone who can make me laugh is always a big win. Are you excited to be a part of the updated Alegria?

Kate McKinnon hunts down Joe Exotic
Kate McKinnon is working on another project based on a podcast. The Emmy Awardwinning SNL star is already in production on The Dropout, based on ABC News/ABC Radio's podcast about Theranos fraud Elizabeth Holmes (a no-brainer, really, since they look quite alike and McKinnon is a master at tackling the slightly “off” comedy of bizarrely delusional people). And now she's joined production company UCP – who've already turned the podcasts Homecoming, Dirty John, and Dr. Death into TV projects – for Joe Exotic, based on the Wondery network's podcast called Over My Dead Body. McKinnon will executive

produce and star in this true story as Carole Baskin, a big cat enthusiast, who discovers that a man named Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel is breeding his own big cats for profit. She tries to shut him down, a rivalry develops, and the two engage in a battle that turns, well, you can listen to the podcast yourself, but it's a doozy. No word on when this limited series will air, or where, but keep your cat eyes open for it down the road.
Teen romance The Thing About Harry coming for Valentine's Day
Peter Paige, the Queer As Folk star-turned-production-
mogul who created, wrote and produced shows like The Fosters and Good Trouble, has a new queer directing gig on the horizon. It's called The Thing About Harry a romantic comedy for the Freeform network. Starring Jake Borelli (Grey's Anatomy) as a young man taking the yearning romantic's path through life after coming out in high school, and newcomer Niko Terho as the no-strings player who complicates the lives of yearning romantic types, it's a straightforward tale of young love and commitment that networks like Hallmark still refuse to touch (and let's not call it heteronormative for now, let's just call it sweetly traditional). The film co-stars Britt Baron (Glow) and Karamo Brown (Queer Eye) as friends, as well as Paige as an older mentor. It all sounds like the Love, Simon-ing of gay boy romances, and we are here for it. There's still an absolute dearth of those, so we're more than ready to watch come Valentine's Day, 2020, when it drops.
BORELLI Romeo San Vicente starts buying Valentine's Day candy for himself on December 26.

Carol Moran is no stranger to Wilton Drive. As the former owner of New Moon Nightclub, Thirteen Restaurant and 13Even, the Florida native sold everything and moved with her wife, Nancy, to the Big Apple a few of years ago. The ladies settled into apartment 9F in a building situated in the Washington Heights neighborhood. While in NYC, Carol worked curating the beverage program for a multimillion dollar restaurant

group, but increasingly began to miss her life in Broward County. Fast forward to now… Carol and Nancy are back and have recreated that little Washington Heights apartment right here on Wilton Drive in an intimate space formally used by The Naked Grape. The result is Apt. 9F Drinking Den and Social Eatery. Crossing the threshold, this shotgun storefront’s ambiance took me back to rent controlled New
York City in the 90’s. Warm colors, unique art and comfy throw pillows added to that “Friends” apartment feel we all loved during that era. There is a huge bar to the left and the “Living Room” to the right, outfitted with comfy couches, leather armchairs and industrial coffee tables. Located directly behind the bar a is a six by six foot open kitchen, where you can find Carol busily turning out small plates of delectable

food all by herself while chatting across the counter to customers. Next to the kitchen is a long table with stools which gives a nod to that eat in kitchen, big city lofty vibe. The menu is small but the process of rolling out new items is still in motion. In fact, Miami drag diva, Athen Dion and I played guinea pigs, trying out a
couple versions of a Steak Crostini and a smokey tequila based martini Carol was experimenting with that evening. Both were superb and will probably be added to the next menu printing. Apt. 9F started welcoming people into their “home” just a couple months ago and is offering what Carol is calling the “Housewarming Menu.” The tapas menu is small currently but there is a little bit of everything to try. A selection of cheese and meats are waiting for you to Build Your Own Charcuterie Plate, augmented with bread and preserves on the side. Jalapeno Corn Muffins, Baked Goat Cheese and the Burrata and Prosciutto Plate all were tempting but we dove right into the bitesized Turkey Meatballs with house-made salsa verde. The Mini Lobster Roll served on delicious,
gourmet bread with a side of crunchy, retro Potato Stix were a hit with both me and Athena. Our favorite of the evening was definitely the pork Belly Tacos. Tender, crispy pork belly topped with mounds of fresh tropical fruit salsa capped off our little feast. This is a “Drinking Den” after all so Carol has put just as much concentration on the cocktails as she has on the food. Apt. 9F squeezes their own fresh juices daily and whips up their own preserves, syrups and bitters. While they have a full bar, be sure to sample the handcrafted specialty drinks Carol has created with top shelf liquors. The Bourbon Berry Lemonade was terrific. Michter’s Kentucky Bourbon, fresh blackberry, lemon juice and simple syrup…refreshing with just a little kick. Also offered at reasonable prices are a gin drink with blueberry preserves, lemon and soda called the Gin to Sin, the Lillet Paloma with Milagro Tequila, grapefruit juice and agave. There are about a half dozen others to choose from. Carol is a self described “wine snob” so rest assured the wine list is topnotch. All vino is available by the bottle or the glass. Craft beer is on tap and served from the bottle too. If these initial offering are just a preview of what’s to come…Apt. 9F will be a HUGE success. Bravo, Carol! Apt. 9F is located at 2163 Wilton Drive near the Stonewall National Museum and Archives in Wilton Manors and is open seven days a week from 4pm until midnight. A Year Without Sex Proves a Point
A gay man recently abstained from sex for a year just so he could donate blood, hypothetically the first such donation in decades. Since 1983, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned blood donations from men who have sex with men for fear of HIV transmission. That rule was replaced in 2015 with another that still discriminates against gay men by requiring them to go a full year
without any sexual contact before being eligible to donate blood. Zack Ford, LGBT editor at ThinkProgress.org, reports Jay Franzone, an openly gay man, was able to donate blood legally week when he went without sex for a year just to do a good deed – and prove the absurdity of the rule. “I [could not] even receive oral sex over the course of one year but my best friend can sleep with eight different women in a week and go donate blood, no problems — without any protection.” Source: ThinkProgress.org

DJ Miik Celebrates 25th Anniversary Of Keeping Us Dancing I
met my Miik Martorell (DJ Miik) in 1998 when I was managing the Club Omni, and I hired him to spin on Thursdays. Shortly thereafter, a friendship developed that has now lasted over 20 years. Therefore, it was my pleasure to sit down with Miik to talk about his career and life just a couple weeks before he would be celebrating his 25th anniversary of DJing.
Who was the irst DJ you ever heard spin? I remember hearing DJs at Uncle Charlies in Miami back in the early 90's, but I never knew their names. In 1992, Ralph Falcon, a friend who I was in college with at the time, played a gig at the Cameo Theater in Miami Beach. I remember standing up in the DJ booth while he played “Homeless by Crystal Water. That song just stuck in my head and I realized how much I enjoyed house music. Ralph and Oscar G are the production team MURK that have made some amazing music and still inspire me today.
When did you realize you wanted to be a DJ? Since I was a kid, I've always loved music and dreamed on working in radio. I'd make many mix tapes announcing the songs and basically playing DJ at home. In 1990, I worked in retail music promotions and later became and on-air personality at WKLG, a country radio station in the Keys. I went to radio production school in Miami Lakes and while I enjoyed radio, realized it didn't pay that well. While I was working as a manager with Best Buy, in 1994, I started to gravitate to all the amazing dance music that crossed over to radio. I noticed that we weren't carrying these in the store so I did some research on what

was hot in the clubs and contacted the Hitz Records pool in Miami Beach. Record pools oered DJs a place to get new music that the labels wanted to promote. Hats where I met DJ Bugie, who ran the pool and was such an inspiration to me. Still, to this day, he is my best friend and I am truly fortunate to have him in my life. Watching Bugie spin at Twist was what made me realize that DJing is what I want to do.
What was the irst place you ever DJ'd? My irst few DJ gigs were parties for friends, but my irst consistent nightclub gig was in 1994 on South Beach at ReBar and the Comedy Zone. It was there that I met DJ Buddah who had worked with the 2 Live Crew. I loved his style of blending hip hop, rap and house and the way he always kept the energy up in the club.

Looking back, it was actually kind of that feel? funny, but not at the time. I knew that failure While ReBar and Comedy Zone was my irst was not an option so I pulled it together and residency, it wasn't until I started working in somehow got the gig. In 1998, Gary Santis, who gay clubs that I realized that this was something was managing the Saint oered me the chance I wanted to do long term. My irst residency in a of a lifetime to work there. He then took me gay club was Copa in 1997. Thanks to DJ Paulie with him to Coliseum, where I was a resident DJ and Gregg Bernard, I got the chance to audition. every Friday from the day they opened to the Things didn't really go to well though, in the day they closed. Years later he brought me to beginning of my audition which was while the Manor, where I still spin. In addition to these club was open, my nerves got to me and my residency's, I have spun at dozens of other clubs here in Florida and around the world. Who are your mentors in the DJ and music world?

DJ Bugie was and continues to be someone I look up to and love. For all these years he has put up with me and at times my crazy. Over the years, I have been fortunate to meet some amazing DJs who I truly appreciate for not only their body of work but their style. DJ Deanne, DJ Abel, Ralphi Rosario, Chris Cox, Tracy Young, Tony Moran, DJ T-Pro, DJ JPS, DJ GQ and DJ Sushiman are all people I dearly love and admire. Since becoming a Billboard Magazine Music Reporting DJ, I have had the great fortune to meet some amazing and legendary music promoters like Bobby Shaw, Brad LeBeau, Orlando Puerta & Frank Cerallo who together have played a huge part in just about every dance song you've here heard. Getting to know them over the years has been such an honor and a blessing.

Over the next hour, I pulled out every song that I could think of, and inally got the crowd back on my dance loor. I remember Gary coming up to me and saying "Gurl, you're on ire!" I don't think I'll ever forget that day.
Other than DJing, what do you like to do for fun? Work! I love working but I have found that volunteering has been so rewarding. I've been volunteering with Pride Fort Lauderdale for the last 6 years and became president of the organization about 4 years ago. Over the last almost 4 years, I have volunteered at 68 Pride festivals all over the world from New York to Argentina where I have learned so much about our LGBT community and the wonderful people who organize these Pride festivals and events. Meeting these people, and being there to help and show support and solidarity has been the most important thing I've ever done in my entire life. Describe yourself in 3 words? Caring, Crazy, Genuine.
What separates you from other DJs? Nothing. It's not a competition for me. But I will say that unlike some, I do take requests. LOL!
What are some memorable moments from the DJ booth? One year I was working the Black Fort Lauderdale Party for Gary Santis at Voodoo Lounge and Revolution Live. I was playing the outside area going on right after Tony Moran. The plan was to open the inside of Revolution Live right after I went on, where Manny Lehman would DJ. The outside was packed with what looked like 2000 people and Gary came up to me and said, make sure you play something high energy. I had this great updated house remix of It's Raining Men from the Weather Girls so I started my set with it. Not less than a minute into the song when the thunder came in, the heavens opened up and the there was a torrential down pour. Of course, everyone ran inside to escape the rain and now it was my job to bring them back.

What does the future hold for you? Hopefully many more years DJing her in South Florida and beyond. I also have to thank Gary Santis for trusting and believing in me, and giving me the guidance I needed to grow. Without Gary, I wouldn't be here today!
Are you excited about your 25th Anniversary and what can our readers expect from your set that night? I've been looking forward to this night for a while. I'll be bringing back some of the classic songs that everyone knows and loves. Think of the songs you would hear on Fridays at the Coliseum and that style is what you can expect. If you want to celebrate DJ Miik's 25th anniversary of DJing, Bubble Gun Fridays at the Manor Nightclub will be having a Coliseum Reunion/DJ Miik's 25th Anniversary extravaganza on Friday, December 6. trike up the band and start the parade, ladies and gentlemen and those who identify somewhere in between or beyond. Chick-fil-A has gone gay! We've done it. At long last, we've broken the anti-LGBTQ spirit and will of Chick-filA's philanthropic arm. From here on out Chick-filA will only be donating to Homosexual Agenda, a 501(c)(3) that seeks to make everybody both transgender and/or lesbian, gay, bi or pansexual. In addition, HA will ensure that the only political figure children learn about is Harvey Milk, though the idea Abraham Lincoln was gay will be included in the curriculum. Wait a minute, I'm being told that I may have my facts mixed up. It appears that there the so-called “homosexual agenda” is just a general desire to be recognized and treated as equal and worthy human beings and not a 501(c)(3) organization. Ooof, that's going to hurt me at tax time. Oh, and Chick-fil-A hasn't gone gay after all. You can forgive me for thinking that Chickfil-A had done something very drastic when it came to their charitable giving. I'm old enough to remember when Chick-fil-A gave money to anti-LGBTQ organizations like the odious Family Research Council. Progressives were angered while anti-gay conservatives literally lined up around the block to show their antiLGBTQ solidarity by buying and eating chicken sandwiches with two pickles on a toasted butter bun. I'm also old enough to remember that Chick-fil-A stopped giving money to groups like FRC. That was in 2012.

OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI
Well lo and behold, Chick-fil-A has still been giving money to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Salvation Army, two groups that are against marriage equality and have been accused of discriminating against LGBTQ people in hiring. And so Chick-fil-A received criticism from LGBTQ people and allies. And now Chick-filA has announced that it isn't going to give money to either group anymore. Coincidence? Honestly, maybe? I mean, it's possible that Chick-fil-A has been watching a lot of "Queer Eye" and has had a change of heart. But it's also possible that they just decided to put their money and focus somewhere else? Regardless, people on the right are freaking out. Rod Dreher, an editor at The American Conservative, is one of them. He wrote a piece titled “Chick-fil-A Surrenders To LGBT Bullies” on The American Conservative website which begins with, “This is a sad day. Even though Chick-fil-A is hugely profitable, it still capitulated to progressive bullies.” Dreher is, of course, entitled to his feelings so if he wants to feel sad then I won't try to diminish that. But I have a problem with the insinuation that a “hugely profitable” company is exempt from public pressure or just basic decency due to its wealth. I also don't appreciate being called a bully simply for insisting on my full humanity and refusing to capitulate to anyone who sees me as less than. I also do not give a pass to being anti-LGBTQ based on religion. So apparently that means Dreher despises me. I've got to give him some credit for not hiding behind that “love the sinner hate the

He's just flat out, “I hate you.” Cool cool. “I despise the LGBT bullies, but I'm not letting Chick-fil-A's leadership off the hook,” he writes, calling them “cowards” and accusing them of “gutless surrender.” “And it's a lesson to all of us,” he warns. “The LGBT lobby, and their progressive allies, will never, ever leave you alone. Never.” Never ever ever? True. There is no amount of discrimination and hatred that we will or have to tolerate. “Anyway,” Dreher continues, “shame on you, Chick-fil-A. You had no reason to capitulate. You have successfully resisted the mob for years, and built a booming business in spite of it! But capitulate you did.” I would like to take a moment to remind everyone that Chick-fil-A is a fast-food restaurant, not the American Embassy, not a hospital, not a military base. They sell sandwiches and fries. They don't save lives or
protect this country. I am reminded of the, “Sir, this is an Arby's” punchline used so often on Twitter. A great example is its use by Alexandra Petri (follow her at @petridishes) as a response to a Brett Kavanaugh quote regarding his insane behavior before the Senate. I propose that we use, “This is a Chick-fil-A” in response to the crazy ramblings of folks like Dreher. Dreher: “The homosexuals are taking over and ruining our freedom and will never, ever leave me alone!” Employee: “Sir, this is a Chick-fil-A. And you need to leave.” D'Anne Witkowski is a poet, writer and comedian living in Michigan with her wife and son. She has been writing about LGBT politics for over a decade. HOT ADVICE By Andreus Quinones
HAUNTING PAST Dear Andreus, I have been having a difficult time over the past few months with my boyfriend. I am very picky about our choice in friends, and we don't see eye to eye on the subject. He likes hanging out with his ex-boyfriends and previous flings, and it doesn't set too well with me. He tells me that I am making a big deal out of nothing, but am I? Sincerely, Craig P. Dear Craig, In this situation the underlying question is trust. Do you trust your boyfriend? Is there anything about these friendships that give you pause or is it just because of the prior history. Now, in all honesty, I would not feel particularly comfortable with my partner hanging out with his exes or previous flings either, but that is personal preference. These are the types of things that you need to discuss in the early phases of dating. You certainly cannot tell him who to be friends with or not, but maybe you can establish certain boundaries. Better to do it sooner, then later. Dear Andreus, Every time my boyfriend gets drunk at the
bar or a party, he starts touching people in a sexual or flirtatious manner. I find it disrespectful, but he says it's all in fun. Every time it happens, I say something, but he always comments with – “I am with you, so you shouldn't be worried.” I see flirtation as an invitation. Am I correct to feel this way? Sincerely, Jackson R. Dear Jackson, BOUNDARIES, BOUNDARIES, BOUNDARIES. I cannot reiterate this enough. So many people end up in relationships or dating where the lines are blurred. You must establish what you like, dislike and what your expectations are (within reason), from the beginning. In my point of view, if you are “with” someone, you certainly should not be flirting and/or touching other people. Those behaviors are inviting, so I agree. If voicing your concerns is not working, maybe it's time to turn the tables and see how that goes. Sometimes people don't realize the extent of what they are doing until it is done to them. Good luck!
