hirteen minutes with Jamie Lee Curtis was not quite enough time to ind out why, even though it was “very important to me” to investigate the sexuality of one of her characters, she's never considered the sexuality of her most enduring, Laurie Strode. I'm still curious. I still want to know. Jamie, if you're out there, if you're reading this, call me.

The day we spoke, Curtis, in signature no-nonsense mode, was fully immersed in a whirl of action at the media junket for her new whodunit ilm Knives Out, which left precious time for contemplative states, Laurie Strode gay talk and cheeseburgers. The esteemed “Scream Queen” is completing her order as she calls me, though “the last thing I'm thinking about is what I'm gonna eat.” Eventually, however, I've got Jamie Lee Curtis thinking about that time she decided to make a character gay and no one ever really knew. Minutes into our twisty chat, Curtis, best known for roles in A Fish Called Wanda, Trading Places and some movie called Halloween, is re lecting on a role she seems very proud of: her portrayal of the school principal in a ilm she says “no one saw” called Spare Parts. Based on a true story, the 2015 ilm centers on a group of Latino students who win irst place over the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 2004 MATE ROV robotics competition. Those who didn't see it, and perhaps even those who did, missed what Curtis calls a “subtle reference” to her character's late wife, who she says is pictured in a photograph in her character's of ice. “I very speci ically wanted the backstory – that you will never know – that she moved to that place because of her wife and her wife died,” Curtis says. Knowing that the actress used her ally powers to queer one of her characters, I'm curious if Curtis delved similarly into Laurie Strode, who is stalked by madman Michael Myers in Halloween, both the original and its recent 2018 sequel – asking you to forget all Halloween sequels in between.

Released in 1978, the horror classic jumpstarted her career; exploring the effects of lingering trauma in the latest installment lured Curtis back to ictional Haddon ield, Illinois, where the story takes place (Curtis will return for two more entries in the

undying saga, Halloween Kills, due in 2020, and Halloween Ends, set for 2021). I point out that one Tumblr page I discovered recently is called “Laurie Strode is gay!!!” (The site even features Pride Laurie Strode icons, with a cartoon Laurie in front of a rainbow backdrop.) Curtis tells me she hasn't considered Laurie's sexual identity at all. “No, no,” she says, irmly. Quickly moving on, she leads the conversation into a discussion about the sexuality of public igures, including her own. “I don't think it's anybody's business what people's sexuality is, to be perfectly honest,” she says. “I ind it like a reverse discrimination.” Going beyond the scope of the question, she explains that, “People's private lives are their private lives and whether I've ever kissed a girl – have not – is irrelevant to whatever advocacy I participate in.” Curtis thinks it's “sort of destructive cocktail party fodder what people's sexuality is,” but that ultimately it's “nobody's business, it doesn't matter” – unless, she insists, “you legislate anti-gay legislation but are gay. I fully accept outing those people for the hypocrisy.” Though not gay herself, Curtis has been a longtime LGBTQ ally since the AIDS

epidemic hit close to home, claiming the lives of her good gay friend Rick Frank, whom she starred with in the early '90s ABC sitcom Anything But Love, and his husband George Lowe, who both succumbed to complications from the virus and, she says, died one year apart. “Rick became, honestly, one of my best friends,” she says, warmly. “That experience with both Rick and George was a galvanizing moment for me, and I have tried to honor him more than anything with trying to keep that focus.” Though her compassion for the LGBTQ community stems from Rick and George, Curtis's ties to it go back even further, thanks to the passel of gay friends and colleagues surrounding her legendary mother, Psycho actress Janet Leigh (Curtis's also-legendary father, Tony Curtis, star of early-drag romp Some Like It Hot and featured in The Celluloid Closet, was also noted for having close friendships with gay men).

26 | Hotspots.LGBT

“Her make-up artist was gay, the playwright that she did a play with was a great friend of our family who was gay,” she says. “I did not know any gay kids growing up, but I was propositioned in school once by a girl. I was at boarding school and I remember I rejected her advance and, you know, that didn't go well. She made a point of making that an issue for me at school a little bit.” But even as a straight woman, who has been married to Best in Show ilmmaker Christopher Guest since 1984, “You don't have to have your own experience in order to feel compassion and the need for justice and equality. In the LGBTQ world, certainly I have friends and family, but I don't have to have the direct experience in order to feel the compassion that I truly feel for acceptance and equality in all areas.” She has acted accordingly, participating in a variety of LGBTQ causes and projects. In 2012, alongside Brad Pitt and Martin Sheen, Curtis portrayed Sandy Stier, one of two women who went to the Supreme Court to defeat Prop 8, in Dustin Lance Black's play 8. Four years later, in 2016, Curtis was one of many stars who shared stories of the people killed in the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting for a Human Rights Campaign-produced video. And earlier this year, Curtis

appeared in another video for the HRC's launch of the Americans for the Equality Act public awareness and advertising campaign. Her LGBTQ advocacy will soon translate to screen, as Curtis has purchased the rights to author Sara Cunningham's self-published memoir How We Sleep at Night. The book tells the journey of Cunningham, a Christian mother, as she learns to accept her gay son. Cunningham is now the executive director of “Free Mom Hugs,” a nonpro it offering LGBTQ outreach and support to LGBTQ youth, an organization she founded. As for the movie: “We're in the inal script,” Curtis told me, otherwise tight-lipped, “and then hopefully we will be making it next year.” On TV, she's also defended the LGBTQ population with her bare ist. Her role as Dean Cathy Munsch in Ryan Murphy's Scream Queens featured the actress in a politically charged moment, her character beating up an attacker dressed in a Justice Antonin Scalia mask. While Curtis throws a steady stream of punches at his face, she gives him a piece of her mind, insisting with iery conviction that, “The homosexual lifestyle is not destructive to the fabric of American society!” As for using her art as activism to spur social and political change, Curtis says, “I'm happy to represent whatever aspect of hope someone will take from anything I do, be it something I write, something I say, a part I played or, most importantly, the 'being Jamie' in the world. If that ends up being something that is helpful, that is then a reason to be alive; to be hurtful would be a tragedy for me. It would kill me to think that I've hurt someone with an action or a word or a deed.” If you take away anything from Knives Out, a feel-good murder mystery featuring Curtis as realestate mogul, bullshit-calling Linda Drysdale-Thrombey, whose father Harlan (Christopher Plummer) is murdered at his 85th birthday bash, it's who the ilm's real gay icon is. Some on the internet have already given the title to Toni Collette's highcamp character Joni, the widowed step-sister to Linda and Walt

(Michael Shannon), because she speaks in Valley Girl uptalk and owns a silly lifestyle and wellness brand called Flam, which, according to a branding video, is “more than a word, it's a way of living.” But Curtis wants to rede ine the very broad quali ications of a gay icon, it seems – beginning with taking a good, hard look at why women with children fall into that category. (This would exclude, of course, famous moms like Madonna, Cher, Britney Spears, Judy Garland, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Beyoncé and Mariah Carey.) “Why does Toni Collette's character have to be a gay icon?” Curtis objects. “I don't understand that. She's a heterosexual woman who has a child. She's not gay. Because she's lamboyant?” Passionately speaking on the subject, Curtis posits that the true gay icon in Knives Out is Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas), Harlan's devoted caregiver, “because she's kind.” “You see, embracing LGBTQ issues, the root of it is kindness,” she explains. “Not clothing or lifestyle. The root of acceptance of a human being is kindness and the kindest person in Knives Out is Marta Cabrera. I would hope what LGBTQ people focus on is whether someone is kind and loving and inclusive and expansive versus rigid, cold, judging and hateful, and that is, to me, the dividing line.” Gay icons of the world, Mama Jamie has her eyes on you.

deep inside HOLLYWOOD By Romeo San Vicente know him as one of the writers of the instantly legendary “Sara Lee Instagram sketch. At this point we're pretty much just stalking his career wherever it happens to meander, like into the indie drama Cicada, currently in production. The first narrative feature from filmmaker Matthew Fifer, it's the story of a young queer man who enters an interracial relationship and who then must, over the course of a summer, come to terms with traumatic childhood experiences. Fifer will play the one of the leads, as will fellow newcomer

Taika Waititi's non-binary goals Filmmaker Taika Waititi's career now spans wild comedy (What We Do In The Shadows), Marvel Cinematic Universe box-office juggernauts (Thor: Ragnarok), and daring Oscarbuzz satires (JoJo Rabbit). So naturally his next move is an inspirational sports film about a Samoan soccer team. It's called Next Goal Wins, and it's about a real-life team's resurgence after suffering the longest losing streak in international football. What's queer about that? The existence of Jaiyah Saelua, the first non-binary player to compete in a men's FIFA World Cup qualifying match. And what's queer about the casting is that it will be the debut film role for actor Kaimana, who is

a fa'afafine Samoan actor (in Samoan culture, fa'afafine people comprise a non-binary gender identity). In other words, this will be the next step in non-binary representation in cinema, both in character placement and casting (after non-binary actor Asia Kate Dillon's role in John Wick: Parabellum) and that's a significant development.

Cicada gives SNL's Bowen Yang a movie role

We listen to Yang's podcast Las Culturistas and know him as one of the new cast additions to SNL. Of course, more importantly, like the rest of queer America, we also now

YANG

Sheldon Brown, but the supporting cast includes Yang and some very established names like Cobie Smulders (Avengers), Scott Adsit (30 Rock) and David Burtka (A Very Merry Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, where he played a bizarre version of himself alongside husband Neil Patrick Harris). We're expecting this one to hit indie film festivals first, so keep tabs on it. Romeo San Vicente loves Sara Lee pound cake and you'll have to get your own because he doesn't share.

over daily business. The interior is open, clean and modern and features about a dozen tables and a huge bar with stools. The seating capacity is more than doubled by the addition of the beautiful covered patio, which also boasts another full bar. Recently, I stopped in on a Wednesday evening for dinner and to catch my friend Dee Dee Van Carter’s cabaret show. She is there every week hosting an old school 2-hour variety show

that features a rotating cast of drag performers as well as live vocalists. The show was great and brings in quite the crowd. Even though they feature a modest menu, there is a little something for everyone at Spencer’s. It’s pretty much the same menu for lunch and dinner, although dinner entrees are beefed up a bit. lunch. There is more than a half dozen starters to pick over… Shrimp Cocktail, Chicken Wings, Hummus, Sweet Corn Fritters and Wild Pork Wings to name a few. Numerous salads like their Corner Bar Salad with mixed field greens, mandarin orange, English cucumber, sun-dried cranberries, toasted almonds, feta and a housemade raspberry vinaigrette as well as traditional Caesar and Wedge salads offer lighter options for those watching their waistlines. Indulge in a heavier meal with a variety of hot sandwiches, chicken dishes, pastas, salmon and of course their famous meatloaf, just like mom used to make. For dinner, we ordered a couple of appetizers and a couple of entrees and shared everything. We selected the Mozzarella Half Medallion…gooey cheese moons lightly breaded and served with warm house made marinara sauce hit the spot. The Homestyle Potato Cakes were amazing too. This creamy fried potato goodness on a bed of dill sauce took me back to the time of delicious food at

Grandma’s kitchen table. Dinner portions are huge and served up blue plate special style with a meat and two sides. The homemade Meatloaf is comfort food at its best. Made with lean ground chuck and topped with brown gravy with velvety whipped potatoes and sautéed veggies…this

Two large, French cut bone-in pork chops, marinated in rosemary and grilled to perfection went great with a side of applesauce, rice and mixed seasoned vegetables. Things That Make You Go

Ridin’ All The Way to the Bank

Each year you hear that ONE song blasting every 30 minutes on your favorite radio stations, gym speakers and Spotify. The lyrics roll effortlessly off your tongue and the internet memes are borderline overkill—but you just can’t stop singing. “Old Town Road” was THAT song in 2019. The runaway hit was so popular in fact that it surpassed Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” as the longest running number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. Oh boy, I wonder if Mariah’s lambs will ever stop screaming about that fact. Lil Nas X’s Country Trap beat, which featured Miley’s dad Billy Ray Cyrus, spent a whopping 19 weeks atop the charts. Whether you dig the song or didn’t get the hype, you can’t deny its epic dominance—especially considering its main vocalist is a black, gay man. The 20-year-old breakout star is now ridin’ the single’s unprecedented success all the way to the bank. Lil Nas X (AKA Montero Lamar Hill) made $14 million before taxes in 2019 and is the first out LGBTQ person to make Forbes’ list of highest earners in country music. He is also the first gay musician to win Song of the Year at the MTV VMA’s, but is there a Grammy in his future? We will soon find out in 2020—the singer is nominated in six categories, including best new artist. Source: OUT.com

Hmmm…

Breaking The Glass If old-fashioned traditions don’t suit your fabulous lifestyle,

create new ones! Although gay marriage isn’t technically legal in Israel, a loophole allowed a same-sex couple to legally marry in another country but also have it officially recognized back in the homeland. And did we mention the grooms hosted a kick-ass party to celebrate? Liran Buchny and Maor Shtern, who traveled to Portugal to obtain their marriage license, welcomed hundreds of friends and family to Tel Aviv to celebrate their nuptials. The celebration, which did not include a rabbi, was held in a nightclub and featured other traditional elements, including the toasts, the giant chuppah – or canopy representing “home” – and the stomping on glasses. “I think that just by doing a big wedding in Israel, that’s our big statement … not letting the system take you down,” Maor Shtern told CBS News correspondent Seth Doane. Going Solo

A national sex study found, with the exception of the 71+ age group, at least 60 percent of men have masturbated within the past year, and an impressive 84 percent of men between 25 and 29 are taking matters into their own hands. Masturbating in the presence of a partner is a less popular activity than going solo with only 49 percent of men aged 25 to 29 engaging in it. Hey, we all need a little alone time here and there! 6 Best Songs By Women in 2019

By Chris Azzopardi ‘Bring My Flowers Now’

Tanya Tucker Country music legend Tanya Tucker's elegiac coda from her first album in 10 years, “Bring My Flowers Now” off While I'm Livin', is a frank reflection of leaving this life, its imagery handled with a gentle hand in the song's music video. The video features Tucker riding atop a horse, two young girls flanking her and releasing flowers petals to the streets. They stop at one point, wave goodbye. On her journey, Tucker passes a smiling preacher and a man in a convertible. Finally, she comes to a halt to share a moment with the co-writer of “Flowers”

and While I'm Livin' producer Brandi Carlile, who's playing the piano; the out singer-songwriter and the country icon relay a deep mutual respect through a simple tip of their hats and a warm, silent acknowledgement. Then Tucker is on her way. The video is one of the year's best, its simplicity the perfect match for the small, heartbreakingly specific details in Tucker and Carlile's plaintive lyrics about Tucker's life and its message of living for those you love now. “Don't spend time, tears, or money on my ol' breathless body. If your heart is in them flowers, bring 'em on,” she achingly sings. The years on Tucker's voice are as lifeaffirming as the song itself. And these – plus its recent Grammy nomination for Song of the Year – are her flowers. Lovingly, Carlile has brought them to her.

‘Track Record’

Miranda Lambert Even Miranda Lambert knows she's been a little busy with the boys. She mocks her floozy image with dry wit on “Track Record” from her new album Wildcard, owning it and treating it as a shoulder-shrugging fact of her life rather than a rueful self-analysis. She even makes time for a casual dig, namelessly calling out past exes, the “user” and the “loser.” Sonically, there are traces of The War on Drugs in “Track Record,” matching the indie rock band's signature sound with its hypnotic '70s-rock-style torrent of glistening guitars and chugging drums. When Lambert sings, “Girls like me don't mean it but we don't know better, I got a track record,” you really do have to wonder: Is this the Grindr anthem we've all been waiting for?

'Love You For Free'

'Cornelia Street'

Cynthia Erivo If church every day was Cynthia Erivo singing “Love You For Free,” my hands would be folded and I'd be at that pew right now. The Broadway stars sparse, inviting almost prayer of a song is about unconditional love, its warmth radiating through her angelic approach to its gentle, dreamy stride and twinkling sound. The song is among over 30 originals recorded for Hedwig and the Angry Inch creator John Cameron Mitchell's 10-episode Anthem: Homunculus, an altautobiography he produced for the Luminary podcast app. For the world's outcasts, queers and others who have felt rejected by any church, hearing Erivo sing, “In this world, my child, you have a place,” is like falling into arms that won't let you go.

Taylor Swift The lyrical cornerstone of Taylor Swift's Lover album, “Cornelia Street” shares some DNA with tender storysong “All Too Well,” off her 2012 Red release. Both summon images with the striking vividness of a photograph. The latter happens to be one of Swift's best written songs – and now so is “Cornelia Street.” The sole writer of the song, Swift is confronting the fear of potential romantic loss, setting the scene over gentle, rolling synths like a movie whose image shifts aspect ratios. The song rolls on like the car she's singing about, accelerating at the chorus, a flood of sound pouring in; there are car-door and wiper-blade sound effects tucked into Jack Antonoff's production, which also includes a heartfelt piano break. “Cornelia Street” is like going back to a good book. You discover something new and wonderful every time.

'Bible and a .44'

Trisha Yearwood Trisha Yearwood turns words on a page into country-music magic, but the singer is at her best when those words tell a story as rich as the one CMA Best New Artist Ashley McBryde wrote for “Bible and a .44.” Yearwood's finest moment on her latest album, Every Girl, is this weepy, which illustrates the lessons a father has passed down to his child. Made personal by the death of Yearwood's own dad in 2005, the singer fondly remembers what he looked like (“hair as white as a cottonfield”) and what he taught her (to be perceptive, to love the Lord, to “take what you've got and do the best you can”). The guitar softening to a whisper, she reflects on seeing him strumming “this thing,” which “he left it to me like he said he would.” Before the final chorus, Yearwood reminds us, her warm, no-frills vocals accompanied by Patty Loveless's soulful harmonies and ad-libs, of how certain things become our most prized possessions: “And if you ask me why it sounds so good, it's 'cause I'm holdin' onto more than strings and wood.”

'Higher Love,'

Whitney Houston When Whitney Houston's unreleased cover of Steve Winwood's 1986 hit “Higher Love” was released during June Pride Month, I made my gay friends listen to it any way I could. Of note was the time this past summer when I flung open my car doors and cranked this one up, the song's divinity thumping in a public parking lot. Not only did my closest friends hear, but so did many lucky passersby. I was doing them a favor that day, because Whitney's neverbefore-released-in-America cover, originally recorded during her I'm Your Baby Tonight sessions and reimagined as a club banger thanks to Norwegian DJ Kygo, is gay dance heaven. She sounds incredible, and Kygo enlivens the song at every turn, taking it beyond its very '80s origins and into timeless soul-revival territory. This is exactly the Whitney I want to remember. I

spent part of my weekend attending a 2019 Election post-mortem where a group of committed volunteers, activists, candidates and elected officials went over what went right and what went not-so-right in 2019. Some of you might be thinking, “There was an election in 2019?” And I could say I forgive you and we're all human and let bygones be bygones and all that — but I won't. Because you're not allowed to skip elections. Not now. Not ever again. Even, and especially, the local ones, which are the races we discussed at this meeting. That's how we managed to get progressive majorities on city councils that used to be deep red. And how we got candidates elected who had never run before. And that's how we plan to use that energy and momentum as we gear up for 2020. Local elections are so important. They aren't sexy. They don't have the razzle-dazzle of a presidential election or even a governor's race. Local races don't tend to have swag like bumper stickers and T-shirts, and they also lack the chatter of pundits. If you want to learn about school board or city council candidates, you're going to have to drag yourself to a local school or public library for a usually sparsely attended candidate forum. If you see the candidates on TV at all it will probably be on a public access channel at 3 a.m. But local government is what most directly and immediately touches your everyday life. They make decisions about your child's education. They decide whether that empty lot in your town gets turned into a park or sold and turned into a Tim Horton's. They decide what

But with the Republican Party literally losing its collective mind and turning into a Donald Trump fan cult, it's more important than ever to get your progressive neighbors onto your city council, library board and school board. HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti

Healthy Choices for Dining Out This Holiday Season

W

hether you're searching for the right career, scoping out a new place to live, or planning a vacation, life is all about making right choices. Staying healthy also requires you to make key decisions. Finding a great gym, making the time to work out and eating right all require proper planning. With the holidays upon us it's almost a sure thing that most guys will cheat on their nutrition and stall some important gains. Whether you are attending family gatherings and holiday work parties or meeting friends out for lots of food and drinks, here are some pointers that can keep you lean and on track with your fitness goals. Holiday brunch on the weekends with friends can be a pleasure. But in one sitting

you can literally consume your daily calorie requirements of fats and carbs. Ask for egg- beaters when ordering an omelet. Stay away from

bagels and Danish as well as sweet rolls and muffins. Instead, opt for an English muffin or a couple of pieces of whole grain toast. Try unbuttered grits with a little fresh salsa instead of hash browns. Avoid processed meats like bacon

and sausage. If you really want to cut back on calories and provided you have the will power, drink sparkling water instead of Mimosas, Screwdrivers and Bloody Marys. Lunch with friends and co-workers to celebrate the season sounds simple and convenient. Yet, those burgers, sandwiches, and salads can be terribly fattening. Between those slices of bread lurk some serious calorie pitfalls like mayo, salad dressing, several servings of salty cold cuts, and loads of fattening cheese. Choose whole-grain breads or better yet, a wrap and grilled chicken

instead of ham, roast beef, tuna or chicken salad. If you choose a salad make sure to avoid croutons, bacon bits, and thick, fatty dressings. Order only half a sandwich or salad and avoid super sizes. Pasta is good energy food but request a half portion and you'll save hundreds of calories. Eat pasta earlier in the day so that the carbs fuel the

rest of the day's activities. If it's available, choose a healthy whole-wheat pasta or spinach pasta for

a more fiber-rich dish and pair it with a lean protein grilled portion of chicken or fish. Avoid cheesy calorie-dense dishes like ravioli, manicotti and lasagna.

Sushi is a healthy choice when dining out. Broiled fish, steamed veggies, edamame and tuna, yellowtail and salmon sashimi are all tasty and light Japanese fare. But unless you want to look like a sumo wrestler, steer clear of tempura and agemono, which indicate deep-fried.

The time you put into your workouts is crucial. Yet it's what you put into your mouth that will make or break your physique. Don't let the holidays be your downfall. Make healthy choices starting now!

The Frivolist By Mikey Rox

5 Ways Your Upbringing Influences Your Money Mindset You may not recognize a connection between your parents' financial habits and the way you manage money as an adult, but the apple often doesn't fall far from the tree.

1

Your parents were tightwads

Frugality is about balance. If your parents didn't strike a healthy balance and were overly frugal when you were a child, you may have developed a pattern of overspending and impulse shopping later in life. Even if your needs were meant as a kid, maybe you felt deprived because your parents didn't or couldn't provide your wants. Either way, you might spend your adult years overcompensating for what you feel you lacked as a child. Rather than save your money, you spend it as soon as you get it. Now that you're older, it's important to find a healthy balance between being frugal and frivolous. Be realistic when it comes to your money and stick to a budget. It's OK to splurge and enjoy your income, but not if it means going into debt and sacrificing your savings account.

84 | Hotspots.LGBT

2

You were spoiled as a child

Whether you were rich or middle class, if you always got what you wanted materially and the word 'no' wasn't in your parents' vocabulary, you might grow up thinking you're entitled to everything. As a kid, you probably didn't see anything wrong with instant gratification and being spoiled by your parents. But the desire to have what you want, when you want it, can follow you into adulthood. And when your parents stop paying your way, you might do whatever it takes to get what you want, even if it means using a credit card and digging a financial hole for yourself. This sets the stage for debt and begins the vicious cycle of living paycheck-to-paycheck.

3

Money wasn't discussed in your house

Some parents feel like money is an “adult” topic, so they don't discuss finances in front of their children. The main problem with this type of upbringing is that when some parents take money topics completely off the table, they forget to teach their kids the basics of money management. These kids grow up knowing nothing about money, and they become adults who overspend and overcharge. Just because money was a taboo topic in your house doesn't mean you have to live in the dark. If you don't know much about personal finances, there are resources available to educate you like reputable financial websites and blogs, or you can work with a financial advisor.

5

You didn't get everything you wanted

4

Your parents were financially insecure

If a neighbor purchased a new car, did your parents have to buy one? Or if a neighbor updated his house or went on vacation, did your parents feel the need to outshine them? Some people feel they have to stay a step ahead of everyone. If you observed this behavior growing up, this attitude might rub off on you. There's a cost to keeping up appearances, and materialism and jealousy can be financially devastating, especially when you're living a life beyond your means. Are you buying an item because you like and need it, or because you want to prove you can hang with big spenders?

It was probably upsetting as child when your parents didn't give into your every command or request. Maybe your friends didn't have to do extra chores or save their allowance for a new toy or a new pair of shoes, but you did. Or perhaps your father's favorite phrase was, “Money doesn't grow on trees.” Rather than your parents buying your first car for you, maybe you had to get a job and pay half the cost while they paid the other half. Back then you thought your parents were being harsh, but you should thank them for instilling financial values. Learning about money, budgeting and saving isn't always fun at an early age. But these lessons (no matter how small) can pave the way for a stronger financial foundation. This upbringing can teach you to be more cautious with money and to think before you buy, which means less debt and more savings.

Shrimp Parmesan Casserole INGREDIENTS

• 1 lb. of Red Argentinean Shrimp or Langoustine meat • 1 ½ cup of milk • 1 ½ cup of shaved parmesan cheese • 3 cloves of minced garlic • ½ teaspoon kosher or sea salt • ½ baguette cut into 2-3-inch cubes • 2 eggs • ½ teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper • 1 sprig of fresh oregano chopped • 2 sprigs of Italian parsley, loosely chopped • 1/4 stick butter cut into thin slices • 2 teaspoons of olive oil¼ stick of butter

94 | Hotspots.LGBT

DIRECTIONS Allow puff pastry to thaw and come to room temperature. Over medium high heat add oil and sauté diced onions until just translucent. Add dry spices and then ground meat and cook until brown. Remove from heat, drain off excess grease, and allow to cool. On a lightly greased cookie sheet, lay out one sheet of the puff pastry. Sprinkle evenly with half the cheese mixture. Evenly distribute ground meat over cheese, but about an inch from the edges of the puff pastry. In a bowl, beat the egg, and brush some of the egg mixture on the vacant edge of the puff pastry. Sprinkle remaining cheese over the meat, and then cover with the other sheet of puff pastry. With a fork, press the top sheet into the bottom as you would do if you were seaming a pie. Make random holes in the top of the pastry so that steam can escape and brush the top of the pastry evenly with the egg wash. Place in the oven for one hour until golden brown. Allow to cool for 10 minutes, cut and ENJOY!!

By: Chris Azzopardi Elizabeth Banks is here for all your lesbianenergy needs. After starring in Pitch Perfect, which never quite gave a cappella group members Beca and Chloe the full-on queer relationship fans (and even star Anna Kendrick) yearned for, Banks returned for Pitch Perfect 2 as star, producer and director, the musical-comedy's lirtation with queerness still very much intact. You could say the same for Banks' new Charlie's Angels and its own ranking on the

96 | Hotspots.LGBT

Kinsey Scale, which de initely leans a little gay. Banks wrote, directed and produced the feature under Brownstone Productions, which she co-founded with her husband, Max Handelman. In addition to working behind the camera to launch the fearless trio – portrayed by Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska – into our modern, sexually luid era, Banks also stars in the spy epic, playing an ex-Angel and one of the ilm's multiple Bosleys. Notably, Stewart

It was intentional then?

I'll tell you, this is what it is: We have a very inclusive, open, loving movie set and I get to make movies with multiple women who get to sit around in rooms and touch each other and hold hands, because that's what women do, right? We just really tried to be as loving and accepting of each other as possible, and if that creates some vibes that people want to interpret, so be it.

After the trailer dropped, this film was dubbed “Charlie's Gayngels” by some queer fans. Is a part of you upset that that wasn't the actual title? (Laughs.) I wish it was just Elizabeth's Gayngles. I'll make a new movie that says that.

Was it your intent to remain sexually ambiguous with these characters?

photos: sony pictures

I think ambiguity is kind of modern now. I think the luidity is very modern right now. Kristen's character is de initely gay in the movie. I mean, she wanted to be gay in the movie and I'm like, “Yeah.” I made sure we kept that little moment in so that you understand what she was attracted to. And you're welcome to talk to her about it. She loves to be open about it. I just wanted to make sure that she was able to present a character that she was fully behind.

Was it important to you to cast somebody whose sexuality aligns with that of the character she's playing?

portrays her secret agent character Sabina Wilson, the irst Angel to be depicted as a member of the LGBTQ community, to re lect her real-life queer sexuality. On a recent morning, Banks called to talk about busting up gender expectations, canceling straight, white, cisgender men and how – yes, kweens – “Kristen's character is de initely gay in the movie.”

So, Elizabeth, are you seeing the lesbian energy in this film that every other lesbian is seeing? (Laughs.) I am! Sure, of course.

Yeah. I will say none of them had sexuality written into the script and everybody in the script sort of lirted with everybody (laughs). Everybody could go all ways at all times and we didn't want to put any limits on anyone. It's a really great way to investigate your mark.

Speaking of investigating your mark: Pitch Perfect fans were rooting for Beca and Chloe to get together, and that never happened.

Both of them date boys in the movies.

Hey, that means nothing.

Apparently it means nothing. But they Hotspots.LGBT | 97

do dates boys in the movie. And they do get naked in the shower together, but lots of people get naked in communal showers in college.

That wasn't my college experience, but please, tell me about yours.

(Laughs.) I de initely was naked in lots of communal showers.

So, back to Sabina: She identifies as gay? Or does she identify as queer, lesbian, bi?

I believe that she refers to herself as queer.

To have a queer lead in a Charlie's Angels movie, does that feel like a big deal to you? It's never happened before.

It's so interesting. I'll be honest, it feels so natural to me that these characters would live in this way. Again, I feel like it's the most modern version of Charlie's Angels and speaks to the audience that's here for it right now. It was never a big deal, it was not a big deal. We talked about it and it just… happened. It was very natural.

How much of Sabina's queerness was Kristen's idea and how much of it was yours?

I wrote that little moment in that script for her to be like, “Ohhh, hello!” to another woman because I wanted it, even though she lirts with guys and then beats them up. It was important for Kristen to present herself as queer in the movie and I was all for it.

Was she responsible for the hair too?

Oh, I de initely wanted her to have that hair. We wanted to play with expectations of Kristen Stewart in the movie, so I told her from the get-go, “I want to open the movie with you in full Barbie regalia. I want you to have the long, blond hair.” She played Gisele on SNL and we looked at a lot of those photos for reference, like long, long, beautiful hair and bright pink dress. You know, the whole thing. Just super comfortable in her skin, so then when she transformed in the opening scene of the movie, it was like, ha-ha, you thought it was one thing but it's something totally else. We were presenting something that really had a big turn. It wasn't like she took off a long, blond wig and then just had shorter blond hair, you know what I mean? (Laughs.) I really wanted there to be a distinction so that you know she's truly playing a character and the real her is underneath.

“Queer Eye” style expert Tan France visited the “Charlie's Angels” set. Did he approve of everything in that giant closet where the Angels's wardrobe is housed?

(Laughs.) I wish he was able to consult on the closet! But he was with us after we were done in the closet (laughs). We were in Istanbul together. We had so much fun. I was so grateful that he came. I don't think he's ever been to Istanbul, which is a really incredible city. And he loved the ilm and is a huge supporter of it. He's just been great.

Are you a “Queer Eye” groupie now?

Oh, I've been a groupie since the original Fab Five, honey. I love the irst go 'round. I'm back for round two. I can't get enough. I have not seen (the special) Tokyo (season) yet. Have you?

No, but I've got a box of Kleenex ready to go.

Yeah, exactly. I bawl during every single episode. (Laughs.)

How did you connect with Laverne Cox for her cameo in “Charlie's Angels?”

I got to develop two television shows with her and love her and I think she's an incredible talent, and she blessed Charlie's Angels. I told her a year-and-a-half ago when I irst started, “I have something in mind for you and it will be small at irst, but I promise there's more if you'll just trust me,” and she was like, “Let's do it. Anything.” Off we go!

You seem to be strongly suggesting you're working on another “Charlie's Angels” film. Are you thinking of making an even queerer follow-up?

I can't… I don't want to… I just want to tell you I always keep her in mind.

It's been said that you playing a space witch in “Power Rangers,” Rita Repulsa, is the ultimate queer role. Is that really your queerest role yet?

Oh, she is probably really high on the energy scale, isn't she? Wow. And also just the costuming. And she was real mad at guys too, by the way (laughs). Yeah, I'm gonna go with Rita, for sure.

You're gonna go with her over Effie Trinket in “The Hunger Games?”

I think so, yeah. I think Ef ie's kind of asexual, actually. She's more of a drag queen; she really has an af inity for Haymitch, obviously. I think that's real. The two of them had a connection but I think in general, yeah. Asexual.

Will LGBTQ characters be among the cast of your HBO show “DC Super Hero High?”

I don't want to say too much about that, honestly. But I'm sure self-exploration will be a part of

their journeys as they are very young and in high school.

As a producer, how important is LGBTQ inclusivity when it comes to the projects that you oversee?

I think it's really important. Also, it's really good business. I'm all about trying to be fresh, and some (people) are like, “You seem to have a lot of female-fronted ilms and television shows. You have Aidy Bryant on Shrill, Kristen... ”

The fact of the matter is that as a businesswoman, I'm trying to create (in a way) that feels really fresh to people, that feels like you haven't seen it before, that feels exciting and new and speaks to right now. It just comes down to the fact that a white, male, cisgender perspective is just not fresh. We've been looking at 'em for 100 years (laughs). And in media right now, I'm about giving voice to something a little different than that. HOT ADVICE By Andreus Quinones

ONCE A MAN, TWICE A CHILD

Dear Andreus, My husband wants to move his father into our house because he is elderly and needs supervision due to health issues and his frailness. I do care for his family, and his father is pretty much all he has left besides his sister, however I am not sure that this is the best decision. We have 2 small dogs and would have to modify our home with bars in the tubs, showers and along the hallways. Also, his father's health requires a lot of attention, and he wants us to take shifts caring for him. I am not up to the responsibility. I work from home, and am at home more than him, but I do not have the time to give his father the proper attention. My husband says I am being selfish. I don't know what to do. Sincerely, Rolando P. Dear Rolando, There is a saying- “Once a man, twice a child. As our parents age, it is inevitable that we will end up caring for them. However, how we chose to do that needs to be carefully executed considering the role of every person involved. You know what you can do, and if you are not able to give his father the proper attention because of your obligations with work, that is understandable. If it is necessary to have him come to live with you both, then maybe you can talk about having a caregiver. Otherwise, your husband may need to adjust his schedule to meet his father's needs. After all, it is his father and that is not your primary responsibility. Sit down, talk it out, and come to a solid agreement.

110 | Hotspots.LGBT

Make sure that you are both comfortable with the agreement, because it can have a lasting effect on your relationship. Best of luck to you both!

Dear Andreus, I have a co-worker who likes me. Well, I like him also. We met at a local bar after work one day for drink and ended up having sex. Now when we are at work, I feel awkward because he is literally all over me. He tries to be touchy-feely and says inappropriate things around my other co-workers. I am afraid to go to HR because I don't want to lose my job. What do I do? Sincerely, Pierce C. Dear Pierce, It is a rule of thumb to not have personal relationships with the people that you work with. Now, clearly things have gotten out of hand. What you can do, is talk to him outside of work and let him know that his behavior is unprofessional. If for some reason you wish to continue a personal relationship, any intimate behavior must be outside of work, or maybe one of you should transfer to another location if possible. If that does not help, then warn him that you will go to HR. If this becomes a problem, you may not have a choice but to go to HR, and you might want to do it before he possibly does. Hope this was a worthwhile learning experience!
