Regular Exercise, It's Not Just for the Body
W
By Tom Bonanti hether you're an exercise fanatic, or you've just begun to consider the option, you're probably aware that there are tangible results that come from doing cardio and lifting weights. But did you also know that exercise can improve the mind as well as the body?

Vigorous physical activity relieves stress and pressure at work, helps you think like a creative genius and generally makes you feel more peaceful and secure? Studies have proven that regular cardio work can enhance the ability of neurotransmitters like serotonin in the brain to work faster. This higher ability won't replace a quality education or being generally street-smart, but it can help you to think clearer, quicker and more creatively. Regular weight training has also been shown to ease excess tension and aggression and promote overall feelings of con idence and well-being. As a trainer, I ind that clients who come in feeling anxious and stressed, over- worked, and generally depressed, report feeling energized and upbeat after early morning exercise. As a result, they are more relaxed and con ident at work and seem to exhibit sharper, clearer mental processes all day long. For many practical reasons a lot of people can't work out before work, but those clients who do regular cardio and
weight training at some point in the course of their busy day report similar increases in energy, mood and productivity. Do you come home from work and crash in exhaustion? Does your heart race when you're stuck in traf ic or before a big presentation or meeting? You have the power to change this misery. Start doing cardio after work and don't
situations – like a cranky boss and do- nothing colleagues who cause you huge amounts of stress. Throwing the weights around helps you to alleviate frustration and pent-up aggression as you build a gorgeous toned body in the process! If you have trouble sleeping, you're not alone. Instead of groping for another Ambien– go for the treadmill or pump a little iron instead. Regular exercise lowers your resting pulse rate, can lower blood pressure, revs up your metabolism, improves digestion, and biologically assists your brain in producing feel-good endorphins. Endorphins are your body's naturally produced painkillers that help you to feel more relaxed and even elated in the face or stress and strain. Regular exercise will help you to produce these substances as you function better during the day and rest easier at night.
forget to pump some iron while you are at it! You might think these activities would add to your overall fatigue, but you are wrong. Psychologists say that a key element behind failing under pressure is physical fatigue. Regular cardio (running, biking or swimming) energizes you and it charges up your brain and body for tough The next time you hit the gym to give that body a workout, remember the good you're doing for your mind and spirit as well! It’s Time for More Shrill! First you need Hulu. Then you need to catch up on Shrill, the wonderfully hilarious sitcom based on essayist Lindy West's book of the same name. The first season is six addictive episodes about a woman (the captivating and perfectly cast Aidy Bryant from SNL) who writes for an alternative weekly newspaper, and who navigates misogyny, fatphobia, sneering colleagues, editors who don't believe in her talent, and cruel Twitter trolls, battling all of it with her wits. John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) co-stars as Bryant's smug, gay

and impossibly difficult boss, and transgender comic Patti Harrison steals every scene she's in with an absurdist presence that has to be experienced rather than explained. Now that we've sold you on it, here comes a second season dropping at the end of January. Plan your life around a weekend afternoon binge-watch and thank us later.
An American Pickle is a real movie that’s happening
It's the story of Rip Van
Winkle, but also An American Tail, with twin effects in the manner of The Parent Trap/Dead Ringers, and some queer casting thrown in for good measure. It's An American Pickle and it stars Seth Rogen as an immigrant named Herschel Greenbaum, struggling along in the year 1918. Then he falls into a vat of pickles and gets brined for 100 years. When removed he is perfectly preserved, hasn't aged a bit, and finds that he has a great grandson (also played by Rogen) who helps him figure out 2019 Brooklyn. In other words, more absurdity from Rogen, his producing partner Evan Goldberg, and writer Simon Rich. As for that queer casting, we get the film debut of YouTube star and Ellen regular Kalen Allen, as well as Broad City's beleaguered brother Eliot Glazer. It's all been in development for a while but the film is meant to finally hit screens sometime in 2020. Cue the hit '80s James Ingram/Linda Ronstadt song “Somewhere Out There.”

Neighborly Love
Old College Try According to a study by Wayne State University and Michigan State University, two-thirds of college students have been in a friends-with-benefits relationship, citing the lack of commitment required as the main advantage to such an arrangement. More than half of those who had sex with a friend said they had engaged in all forms of sex; 22.7% said they had intercourse only, while 8% said they did everything but have intercourse. Through another survey of more than 24,000 university students, researchers found that many people engaging in same-sex hookups identify as heterosexual. One in 8.5 men in college whose most recent hookup was with a partner of the same sex consider themselves straight. “Not everybody who has same-sex relationships is secretly gay,” says coauthor Arielle Kuperberg, Ph.D., director of Undergraduate Studies in Sociology at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, who has written extensively on student relationships. “There was a big disconnect between what people said their sexual orientation was and what their actions were.”
Canada’s Privy Council Office, whose objective is to provide non-partisan advice and support to the Canadian ministry, commissioned a mid-summer 2019 poll to determine how comfortable Canadians were with their LBGTQ neighbors. An overwhelming 91.8 per cent of those surveyed said they would be “comfortable” if a next-door neighbor was gay, lesbian or bisexual and that 87.6 per cent said they would be “comfortable” if a neighbor was a transgender person. The poll found 90.5% of the respondents said they were “very comfortable” or “somewhat comfortable” with a gay, lesbian or bisexual boss and 88.2% were “comfortable” with having an LGB doctor and 79.9% “comfortable” with having a transgender doctor. “It’s really good to see the attitude of Canadians changing and being more open and inclusive,” said Helen Kennedy, executive director of the LGBT advocacy group Egale Canada. “We obviously have more work to do. But it’s definitely a step in the right direction.”

Law of the Land
Illinois became the first US state to decriminalise homosexual acts between consenting adults, under a new penal code in 1961. This was following the 1955 recommendation by the American Law Institute, a group of distinguished lawyers. Illinois remained the only US state to have decriminalised homosexuality until Connecticut became the next state to strike down its laws in 1971. Since June 26, 2003, sexual activity between consenting adults and adolescents of a close age of the same sex has been legal nationwide, pursuant to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Lawrence v. Texas.

Drag Icon Varla Jean Merman Opens 2020 Outlandish Series
Logo TV founder Matt Farber is bringing his Outlandish series back to South Florida for the fourth season, opening Jan. 18 at the Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale with drag icon Varla Jean Merman in “A Star is Bored” I have interviewed Varla before, but never in person, and imagine my surprise when our interview time came and a ginger, mustached, big muscle men came knocking at my door. I thought he had the wrong place until he smiled and I saw the infamous Varla smile. That's right boys, the girl we have known and loved for her originality, creativity and stage presence is a muscle man! It was a pleasure to sit down and talk with Varla's Alter Ego Jeffery Roberson for this exclusive Hotspots interview:
What have you been up to since we last spoke about a year ago? I have of icially moved to Fort Lauderdale and I love it. As a child, were you always a ham/performer or when did the bug bite you? I think I was secretly a ham and it would come out at times. But it wasn't until I went to a boarding school in High school that I got the con idence to act like a goo ball. When was the irst time you did Drag? It was actually in high school. A friend of mine had a senior auction, where a junior could buy a senior and make them do whatever they wanted. We paid these 2 girls to make us do drag in school the next day. How did you come up with the character of Varla Jean Merman? 52 | Hotspots.LGBT

that's more than 3, but who's counting? Tell me about your new show, A Star is Bored, and why should our readers come see it? It's really funny and it's one of the only shows I have done that's based on real life stories. It deals with being an old hefer (like myself) and having to play the new social media game to keep up. I also talk about my in luences in the biz and how they helped me get started. Miss CoCo has had a huge in luence on me, and took me out of bars to work in cabarets and do my own shows. I also feel the responsibility to pay it forward. Is there something I didn't ask you that you want to talk about? Yes….I love the Outlandish festival and I am so happy to be a part of it 2 years in a row. Matt does such a great job, and Fort Lauderdale is lucky to have this festival. That came later. I went to LSU and met this guy named Timo who had a Video Camera, and he introduced me to John Waters movies. Needless to say, I fell in love with Divine. Timo and I started making these small movies doing crazy things. I sold them to the gay bars, and they got popular. When I moved to New York I walked into a gay bar and they were playing the same video tapes….and I told the bartender it was me. They were about to do a big bene it and he asked me if I would perform and that's how Varla was born. In your wildest dreams did you ever imagine she would have such longevity and be this popular? I hoped she would be a little more popular. Do you still do the Easy Cheese number? I have not done that in 15 years, because when I got older I became lactose intolerant. However, it may make a comeback. You have a wedding ring on, how long have you been married and how did you meet? We have been married a year and a half and we met on a RSVP cruise in the gym around 3 years ago. When did you know he was the one? I knew right away that I wanted to be with him, but I didn't think about marriage until about 6 months later. I never thought I was the marrying kind! How does your hubby, Dewitte, deal with you traveling so much? He gets to come with me a lot as he is retired and he loves to travel. Speaking of traveling, you have traveled the world. Is there a favorite city or concert hall you performed in and why? I love San Fran. I always have, because I connect with them. I also love Palm Springs and Sydney Australia. Is there something Varla has not done yet that's on her bucket list? I have always wanted to do an ice skating show, or a show in a swimming pool on a lifeboat. Describe Varla in 3 words? Ditzy, narcissistic and a fun drunk…ok

Aladdin's journey sweeps audiences into an exotic world of daring adventure, classic comedy and timeless romance. This new production features a full score, including the ive cherished songs from the Academy Award-winning soundtrack and more written
especially for the stage. Aladdin is designed by seven-time Tonywinning scenic designer Bob Crowley, six-time Tony-winning lighting designer Natasha Katz, two-time Tony-winning costume designer Gregg Barnes and sound designer Ken Travis. The production features Jonah Ho'okano (Aladdin), Korie Lee Blossey (Genie), Kaena Kekoa (Jasmine), Jonathan Weir (Jafar), Reggie De Leon (Iago), Jerald Vincent (Sultan), Zach Bencal (Babkak), Ben Chavez (Omar), Colt Prattes (Kassim), Jeremy Gaston (Standby Genie), Adam Stevenson (Standby Jafar & Sultan) and Frank Viveros (Standby Genie, Sultan & Babkak). It was a pleasure to sit down with Ben Chavez, who plays Omar for this exclusive Hotspots Interview:
At what age did you begin performing and how did it happen? I always had an in inity for music since my parents played, and I started performing when I was 3 years old playing piano. I started giving recitals at age 4. That same year I got involved in singing, dancing and acting. I caught the bug
and have never stopped pursuing it. I ended up going to my dream school, NYU, and got a BFA in acting with a focus on musical theater. I have been fortunate enough to be working in theater, since I graduated in 2015. What was your irst professional role? The irst professional role I had I would never do again, it was a swing in a regional production of Grease at Northshore Music Theater outside of Boston. It was in between my junior and senior years of college. I was covering 8 dierent roles, it's incredible hard! How did you get cast in Disney's Aladdin? The tour has been out on the road for almost 3 years and I auditioned for this role when it irst launched 3 years ago. I made it to all of the call backs, and in the last round they chose someone else. I was heartbroken as I knew this role was perfect for me. After two years that actor left and they called me to audition again, and this time I was cast. In theater, no doesn't always mean no!
Hotspots.LGBT | 61
How exciting is it to be on your irst tour? It's amazing! All I ever really wanted to do once Graduating College was travel and perform and its what I am doing. I am visiting cities I thought I would ever see. Traveling the world I have met so many amazing people, eat great food. The highlight for me is bringing Broadway to people all around the country. Seeing their faces mean the world to me. Other than this role, what has been your favorite to play? I did a production of Alter Boys in Cape Cod and I got to play the role of Juan. It's a boy band dancing spectacle in those insane 90's costumes. It was so much fun to play! What is your fantasy role? Hamilton is obviously a revolutionary show and it would be awesome to be in that show playing either Hamilton or the Lafayette Jeerson role. I would also love to be Frankie Valley in Jersey Boys. What should our readers expect from this production of Disney's Aladdin? First of all this show is for any age, and makes for an awesome date night. You will laugh your butts o. Anyone who loves Disney and/or Aladdin will love this show which features a really great love story between 2 people who want to make a better life for

themselves. When Jasmine and Aladdin take that magic carpet ride it's like nothing you have experienced in theater before.

DONALD TRUMP
OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI
A
s I write this it is the day before Christmas Eve and the second night of Hanukkah. In our house we celebrate both not only because we have Jews in our extended family but also because my wife and I like to celebrate traditions with our son. It's our goal to raise him to be a feminist who embraces a variety of cultures and celebrates diversity. He is also fluent in Spanish. Basically we are everything conservatives fear when they imagine a boy being raised by lesbian parents. We are quite proud of that. So, 2019. What a year, eh? A lot of awfulness. Honestly, it's hard to think of good news because there's an orange cloud hanging over everything. And that orange cloud is named Donald Trump. It is still incredible to me that someone so proudly ignorant, dishonest, narcissistic, racist, misogynist and cruel is the president of the United States. It's like a bad dream I can't wake up from. Trump is instructive when it comes to how I do NOT want my son to turn out. It's a strange position to be in as a parent, looking at something Trump does or says and then having to explain to my son how I would be so ashamed if he were to behave that way. When I told my son that Trump had been impeached he got very excited. Because he, like many Americans mistakenly understood impeachment to be synonymous with removal. It, of course, is not. A president can be impeached but not removed. On Dec. 19, Trump sent an absolutely batshit

insane letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) in which he protested the impeachment. Trump wrote, “[Democrats] are the ones interfering in America's elections. You are the ones subverting America's Democracy. You are the ones obstructing Justice. You are the ones bringing pain and suffering to our Republic for your own selfish personal, political, and partisan gain.” In other words, “I know you are but what am I.” He also wrote, ”You have developed a fullfledged case of what many in the media call Trump Derangement Syndrome and sadly, you will never get over it!” Super presidential. It's all up to the Senate now, which is controlled by Republicans who all maintain that they love Trump, it's True Love Forever, sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G, gonna have his babies and if loving Trump is wrong they're proud to be right. There was a time when people like Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) was calling Trump “a kook.” In Feb. 2016 Graham told Fox News, “I think he's crazy. I think he's unfit to be president.” Then on May 6, 2016, Graham Tweeted, “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed, and we will deserve it.” But that was then. Now Graham is basically worshipping Trump as a god. In fact, Chris Hayes, host of MSNBC's “All In,” called Graham “one of the most devoted and self-abasing

HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti
Your Workouts, Make Them Practical, Make Them Work!
I
t's 2020 and you're ready to blast into a New Year filled with hearty, healthy new habits including a renewed openness to working out, getting fit, and staying healthy! The only trouble is that all winter, spring, summer and fall, your job keeps demanding more of your time and energy. On those days when deadlines, long hours, and irritable bosses keep you from getting to the gym you can still get in a workout right there in the office. Here are some super exercises that you can do on

break or between meetings. These must-do moves will help you to get in a pump and burn lots of calories simply and effectively. The squat is the best exercise for your lower body, especially your butt. Stand tall with your feet approximately 2 feet apart, toes pointed slightly outward. Bend your knees until your thighs are nearly parallel to the floor. Hold for four deep breaths then gradually stand back up to starting position. Repeat 15 to 20 times. Keep your back straight, hands on your hips and look straight ahead keeping your chin slightly upward. To make
this exercise harder, add weight by holding a couple of large books. Follow each set of squats with high kicks. Lean over a bench or chair, steady yourself on one foot and kick up and out as high as you can with the other leg for 15 to 20 reps then change sides. These are great butt shapers. Push Ups are dynamite exercises for the entire upper body, especially your chest. For a bigger, harder chest, boulder shoulders and pumped
and toes. Bend your elbows to lower your body 3 to 4 inches. Press back up to start. Repeat 10 to 15 times. For variation, try a set with your arms out as wide as you can, then do a set with arms shoulder width apart, then bring your arms in as close as you can. This will allow you to target and isolate the muscle groups of the upper body. Criss-cross crunches will not only give you awesome abs, but they challenge all aspects of the core at once. Lie on a towel or a small exercise mat (you can store one under your desk) with your left knee bent towards your chest and right leg extended up off the floor. Place your hands behind your head to cradle your neck and head. Never pull on them. Curl head, neck and shoulders up off the floor. Rotate from the middle so that your right shoulder is pointing toward your left knee. Hold one breath then slowly rotate to the other side by bending the right knee and extending the left leg as the left elbow moves to the right knee. Continue alternating to complete the set. Repeat 10 to 15 times on each side. Try this routine in the morning before you get to the office. Then find an uncluttered place at work to do it on your lunch break. Bust up the afternoon doldrums by doing it again on days when you can't get to the gym. For more tips on how to keep it simple and make it effective, contact trainertomb@aol.com today!

David Hernandez
is Feeling Pso-Right By Robert Hassilow
A
lthough David Hernandez is best known for his gorgeous pipes, famously competing on the seventh season of American Idol, the out singer is making a name for himself in the wellness world. He's the new spokesperson for the self-massaging tool, Pso-Rite.
He was irst introduced to the product last year, after surviving a six-car pile-up that left him with severe injury to his neck and back. “The pain was excruciating,” he remembers. He was given epidurals to alleviate the swelling in his spine and followed it with six months of chiropractor treatment. “Most people don't think about the impact of living with injury until it happens to them,” he continues. “All of a sudden, simple things like running, lifting, working, and performing basic tasks become impossible.”
After the chiropractor treatment ended, David hoped to follow it with massage therapy but his insurance wouldn't cover it. Luckily, a chance
86 | Hotspots.LGBT
encounter at a pool party changed everything for him.
According to the 36-year-old, Pso-Rite does more than offer the deep tissue massages he needs to release the tightness in his neck and back. It has allowed him to get back to the gym and feel like himself again. We caught up with David Hernandez from his home in LA.
Is David Hernandez to Pso-Rite what Suzanne Somers was to ThighMaster? David Hernandez: (Laughing) If getting behind it means that more people will discover it, then sure, I'll be Ms. Somers. The truth is, thousands of everyday people believe in PsoRite and support it regardless of my involvement.
This isn't your irst time as a pitchman! I read you had a job selling knives door-todoor as a kid. David Hernandez: (Laughing) Actually, I sold the knives during my irst semester in college at the University of Arizona. I was terrible at it,
because the knives cost three thousand dollars and I couldn't sell something that I wouldn't buy myself.
How did you discover Pso-Rite? David Hernandez: My friend invited me to his pool this past summer and he told me about a company he and his brother had started. He had me try it out on the pool deck and I was immediately hooked. It really hit home for me, considering I had been having chronic lower back pain since the accident.
Did the brothers ask you to be their spokesperson? David Hernandez: They asked me to take some photos with my Pso-Rite and about a month later, I came onboard with the company. It is de initely a passion of mine now. Why? David Hernandez: Because it got me to the point where I can hit the gym again! I'm pain-free! Plus, using Pso-Rite for ten minutes before workouts improves my performance by enabling an increase range of motion. Using it after workouts helps with recovery by introducing new blood low and releasing toxins.
The gym has always played an important role in your life. Fans may be surprised to learn that you were a gymnast before you were a singer. David Hernandez: I was! I was always very active, growing up. I used to watch the Olympics and dream of being in them one day. I competed in the Grand Canyon Olympics and took home a lot of medals. Gymnastics taught me discipline and helped to instill the importance of physical activity into my life that still continues to this day. Why did you give gymnastics up? David Hernandez: It is a very rigorous lifestyle. My life became school and then practice ive days per week. It started to take a toll on me.
experience and became a family. I keep in regular contact with Chikezie, Syesha Mercado and Ramiele. Carly Smithson came to my last show in San Diego. I also speak with contestants from other seasons. Blake Lewis, Elliott Yamin, Mikalah Gordon, Haley Reinhart, Brandon Rogers, and Joshua Ledet are all friends.
Are you working on any new music? David Hernandez: Absolutely! Ef ie Passero (another former American Idol) and I have been writing music together and plan to release our irst single and music video this month. We call ourselves 2nd Hour and the single will be “What I See, a power ballad and we couldn't be more stoked about!

HOT ADVICE
By Andreus Quinones
ENJOY IT, WHILE IT LASTS Dear Andreus, I have met the man of my dreams. After so many failed relationships, I had all but given up. I met this amazing guy, and suddenly everything seems to be just right. The issue is that I am constantly in my thoughts. I am so afraid of the floor coming out from under me, just because things are going so great. I can't understand why I am so fearful of something so good. Any thoughts? Sincerely, Douglas J. Dear Douglas, That is what we call “human nature.” We are not creatures of absolute satisfaction. No matter what we have, we want more. Clearly if things have never gone well, and now they are, it is a natural reaction to feel skeptical. What I can tell you, is not to waste your time in your thoughts. Sometimes thinking to much can sabotage something wonderful. If you spend all your time waiting for the floor to come out from underneath you, you can focus on this amazing thing that is happening to you. There are no guarantees in life. Enjoy the good things, while you have them. Sometimes we are fortunate enough to

keep them.
Dear Andreus, I am secretly having an intimate relationship with my second cousin. I have always been taught that these things are taboo, but I can't help it. We began a fondness for one another as children, and now as adults, we have a sort of secret relationship. It is so difficult to keep up appearances, because my family would likely disown us both. I feel the pressure to walk away, but I love him. I have no idea how to handle this situation. Please help! Sincerely, Carson H. Dear Carson, Okay, this is a new one for me. I don't know that I can say anything that would make you feel at ease about this. For most, something like this would be considered taboo. What you must ask yourself is – what is at stake? How many lives would be affected by finding out this secret? Do you feel completely comfortable in this “forbidden” love? If the reservations you have, outweigh all else, then you have your answer. Good luck!

Celebrates Black History Month ArtServe, a non-profit that supports artists committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, is presenting “Roots of the Spirit: Soulful Expressions of the African Diaspora” from Jan. 15 through Feb. 27, coinciding with Black History Month. Under the artistic direction of Consulting Curator Ludlow E. Bailey, “Roots of the Spirit” is a multimedia exhibition and performance series exploring African customs and aesthetics – from ancient traditions to works produced exclusively for this show. A collaboration with The Miramar Cultural Trust further supplements the exhibition with “Imagine Puppets,” a national collection of handmade figures representing the post-slavery era of puppetry, created by contemporary African-American artists.

The group includes: • ArtServe artist-in-residence George Gadson • Fine artist and illustrator Zipporah Michel • Interdisciplinary artist and dancer Hattie Mae Williams and opera singer Kunya Rowley • Painter, sculptor and installation artist Asser Saint-Val • Photographer Zeek Mathias • Multidisciplinary artist and educator Morel Doucet • Artist, author, and University of Texas Professor Moyo Okediji

We are celebrating our shared origins and underscoring ArtServe’s commitment to unifying communities through the arts.” Key Dates and Tickets:

The experience includes: open wine bar and vegan cuisine catered by Inika Foods; an exclusive performance of African dance, spirituals and opera; and tours of ArtServe’s creative laboratory, where artists experiment with concepts tied to social impact. Attendees will also participate in conversations about the latest cultural trends with three influencers
