Someone at the network clearly took notice, and now the network's “classic” dating show, Singled Out – you remember, it ran for a few years in the '90s with Chris Hardwick and Jenny McCarthy – is back on the schedule with the same premise, making people pick lovers from a group of strangers. The first season is six addictive episodes about a woman (the captivating and perfectly cast Aidy Bryant from SNL) who writes for an alternative weekly newspaper, and who navigates misogyny, fat-phobia, sneering colleagues, editors who don't believe in her talent, and cruel Twitter trolls, battling all of it with her wits. John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) co-stars as

Things That Make You Go

Hmmm…

By Troy Maillis

Crazy for You

Loads of Nutrition

Doctors, nutritionists and trainers constantly tell us we need to consume an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals to achieve optimal physical and mental health. Vitamins C, D & E, Fish Oil, St. John’s Wort, Potassium, Selenium, Calcium, Green Tea and Glucosamine top most lists in the who’s who of essential nutritional supplements. Do you know what else has many proven benefits? Semen! Yes, semen has a multitude of benefits stemming from the minerals and nutrients it contains. Consumed in large enough quantities, studies show that semen can act as an antidepressant, antianxiety, mood enhancement and help with cognitive function. According to a research study, “Semen contains mood-enhancing compounds like oxytocin, progesterone, estrone, serotonin, and melatonin. Oxytocin is also known as the “cuddle hormone” because, when released, it makes people feel more affectionate and connected. Progesterone has been shown to have anti-anxiety characteristics. Estrone piggybacks on serotonin to help enhance moods, and melatonin helps relaxation occur.” Remember: these scientific facts are NOT a recommendation to become a human hoover vacuum or engage in any activities that may be harmful to you or someone else. Whether you just experiment with yourself or enjoy this guilty pleasure with others, make sure you are tested regularly and always know your status!

Despite what many right-wing evangelicals still think, homosexuality is not a mental disorder. All of the major medical organizations—you know, the ones who have the research to back it up—have all reached the same conclusion. The American Psychiatric Association, The American Psychological Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics agree that homosexuality is not an illness or disorder, but a form of sexual expression. But that wasn’t always the case. It wasn’t until 1973 that The American Psychological Association removed homosexuality from the list of mental disorders. They said that ‘homosexuality per se implies no impairment in judgement, stability, reliability, or general social and vocational capabilities.’ No one knows what causes a person to be gay, bisexual, or straight. There probably are a number of factors. Some may be biological. Others may be psychological. The reasons can vary from one person to another. We may never know what determines one’s sexuality and maybe one day people won’t even ask the question. Until then—I got your crazy. Source: Funtrivia.com

A World On Fire

The wildfires of California and Australia have been a hot—no pun intended—topic in the news and have made the discussion on climate change as important as it’s ever been in our lifetime. But one man in particular seems to have it all figured out. Arizona minister Steven Anderson, who has been banned from Australia and more than 30 other countries for his anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, recently took to Facebook to share his glorious revelation with rest of us heathens. “Maybe if Australia weren’t banning and deporting preachers of the Gospel, they wouldn’t be under the judgment of God,” Anderson posted on the Facebook page for Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, where he is pastor. So yeah, this psycho believes an estimated 480 million animals have burned to death because God is exacting his revenge on anyone who doesn’t allow his “disciples” to spread the word of exterminating homosexuals. We are indeed living in a world on fire. Source: Advocate.com

Life in the Dollyverse

'Ms. Dolly' on how her LGBTQ-inclusive Netix series is rooted in the 'golden rule' By Chris Azzopardi

Photos : Net ix.

D 34 | Hotspots.LGBT

olly was there, almost, holding court despite her lack of humanness, as queer writers on assignment huddled giddily in front of her, awe-stricken by the realness of a fake Dolly. I stood, out of body, piled into the country legend's Chasing Rainbows Museum as the tech magic that is Dolly Parton's hologram welcomed me to a Dolly

shrine, perhaps the most holy site I've seen since my parents took me to church as a kid. A regular experience at the museum, the 3D image of our honky-tonk goddess dovecoos about holding onto special memories and keepsakes; then, she asks you to remember one thing, breaking out some a cappella lines to let you know “that I will always love you.” She blows kisses and bids farewell: “I'm outta here,” she says. And poof, there she goes, melting into the most magical cloud of blue fairy dust, falling to the loor. Dolly transforms into a soaring butter ly. When human Dolly descended upon a conference room at her DreamMore Resort in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, it was like she'd just stepped out of a Saturdaymorning cartoon – or out of that holographic screen. She whooshed into our room of journalists with a hearty, “Well hello eve'ybody!” and zinged up to the front of a throng of alreadyseated journalists, making an astute observation on her jolly way: “Y'all like a bunch of kids: quiet, waiting for Ms. Dolly, Ms. Teacher, to come in.” Then Ms. Dolly got down to business, talking about her new Net lix anthology Heartstrings, where lessons are carefully taught with a steady hand and her unique ability to unify America, a topic recently explored in depth by Jad Abumrad on his podcast Dolly Parton's America (having experienced Dollywood, including some of its otherworldly cinnamon bread, I can also say he's spot on in coining her universe the “Dollyverse”). Expanding her ditties into full-on mini movies, the eight episodes produced for the series extend hearty lessons inspired by a mixture of both iconic and more obscure Dolly

Parton songs; they gently and sneakily school the ignorant, the blissfully unaware and the downright bigoted, all told in Ms. Dolly's preferred socio-political manner: through her stories. The “Jolene” episode tells the tale of the eponymous misunderstood woman that Dolly fears will take her man in the song (played by Julianne Hough), though the episode concludes that it's the cheating men who are the real problem. Forbidden love is the crux of “Down from Dover,” centered on a young black soldier and a white reverend's daughter during the Vietnam War. The lesson of the “Two Doors Down” episode is classic Dolly because it's the gay one. If you're a queer Dolly-head, you won't be surprised to discover her introduction to the episode, which spotlights a same-sex love story. But your homophobic uncle might be – in fact, he might even inally learn what non-binary means and that transgender people are real people, all thanks to Ms. Dolly's Queer 101

Because what it all comes down to is love is love, in road families and in real families. Now life might not always be a party, but you are better off if you can just enjoy yourself, have fun and accept and love the people around you.”

classroom introduction. The “Great Uni ier,” as she's been called, introduces every episode – and it is always the best part of each installment. Here, she explains that even when she couldn't be with her blood family on the road, she was with “a whole new family, with bands and crews that were made of all kinds of people who were different colors, gay, lesbian, transgender and all different faiths. But it didn't matter as long as we all loved each other and got along. And we did. And we still do. Because what it all comes down to is love is love, in road families and in real families. Now life might not always be a party, but you are better off if you can just enjoy yourself, have fun and accept and love the people around you.” What a wise teacher we have in Ms. Dolly. She reiterated a similar sentiment that day in

36 | Hotspots.LGBT

the conference room, talking about the “golden rule” – that is, once she reached the stage. “I'm gonna need another lift,” she chirped. “These are not the kind of shoes you want to take chances in. These boots aren't made for walkin'.” She stomped the loor, then we were off. According to Ms. Dolly, that rule is treating people right – and that if you know your values, your morals, and you know what to sacri ice and what not to, “you'll be all right.” (When asked about granddaughter Miley Cyrus, she further illustrated this point by saying: “People say you need to talk to Miley; I say, no, I don't need to talk to Miley. Let Miley be Miley, I'll be me and everybody needs to do their own thing.”) Heartstrings practices the golden rule, and like her brand emblem – the butter ly, which is everywhere at Dollywood and at the

DreamMore (even the toilet paper in my hotel room was butter ly embossed) – happy endings are also ubiquitous in the Dollyverse. And so it's no surprise that Heartstrings is an extension of that world. A world Net lix knew the streaming population needed more of, a series that Ms. Dolly said “really did tug at your heartstrings.” In her mind, her songs are already movies anyway: “I grew up way back in the mountains, and early in my early days we didn't even have electricity and we listened to the Grand Ole Opry on a battery radio.” She didn't watch movies, and there was no TV, so to pass the time she would “paint pictures in my songs and tell stories,” she said. “So it was just a natural it, I thought, to do a series based on songs that I've written.” Ms. Dolly could've tapped into her most well-known songs for Heartstrings – you may have noticed there's no Heartstrings episode centered on “I Will Always Love You” (maybe next time, she says) – but aside from featuring a few of her biggest hits, “we wanted to pick songs that are also different.” She loves Westerns and dressing up in Wild

West get-ups, so since she's Dolly Parton and she can, she did a “J.J. Sneed” episode. Also, she loves dogs and “so I had a little song I had written years ago called 'Cracker Jack,' so we wanted to get one of those in as well. We wanted to cover all the emotions.” At one point during the press conference Ms. Dolly sneezed, which is a non-story except that this was Dolly Parton sneezing, so it was an event. She asked for a tissue and whooped a laugh, teaching us all another lesson: even honky-tonk goddesses are susceptible to seasonal sickness. “With this weather changin' and all that,” she explained, before a man who was, I believe, a journalist – but looked like he could've easily been in one of these Heartstrings episodes – passed her a tissue. She thanked him, calling him “cowboy.” Like she was throwing the “Cracker Jack” dog a bone, she dangled the tissue out in front of our group of journalists, joking that she was going to ling it out so someone could sell it on eBay. Non-holographic Ms. Dolly, extraordinarily human at this point, called it “star snot.”

Outlandish Series 2020 By Scott Holland

Poodle or did they give it to you? I picked the character. I had a choice of the poodle or the alien. Being inside of the suit is very different and you are singing live. However, it was an amazing show to be a part of, and I had a great time on it. How did the Podcast The Margaret Cho Show come about? Do you have a favorite guest from season 1?

Photo: Sergio Garcia

A

n accomplished performer in all formats, Margaret Cho could be called the “Queen of all Media” having conquered the worlds of ilm, television, books, music and theatre. She has ive Grammy Award nominations (two for music albums, Cho Dependent and American Myth) and one Emmy nod for her groundbreaking work on 30 Rock. Never one to shy away from a dif icult or 'taboo' topic, her socially aware brand of stand-up comedy has made her both a thought leader as well as a teacher to those with open minds and open hearts. In 2017, Rolling Stone magazine named one of the 50 Best Stand-Up Comics calling her “the sort of funny, sex-positive feminist and LGBT activist younger comics continue to look up to.” Equally as important as her creative side is the causes she is passionate about. Margaret is widely recognized for her charitable work with gay rights and anti-bullying campaigns. In every segment of her life, Margaret is honest, forthright, passionate, uproarious and always entertaining. I have interviewed Margaret before but it has been a few years, so I thought it would be a perfect time to sit down with her again, right before her performance in the Outlandish Series. However, not to beat a dead horse, this interview starts from where I left off a few years back: Shortly after we interviewed you last time, you started working on Fashion Police. How was that to work on? I loved it! I was very close to Joan Rivers, and it was very nice of Melissa to bring me into the world that they discovered. I appreciate everyone's point of view and I loved stepping into Joan's shoes for a moment. Joan was such a big life and personality and someone I admired for so long. In 2017, Rolling Stones Magazine named you to the 50 best stand-up of all times. How did that feel? Was it at all validating or are you past validation this far into your career? No I loved it, it's really a great thing to be. Comedy has changed my life, so I was really proud. How was your experience on the Masked Singer, and did you pick the character the

My favorite guests were Quentin, Jonathan, and Melissa. I used to be a podcaster in the dawn of podcasting in 2012, but now it has grown up a lot and its great fun and I really enjoy it. You are a stand up comedian, an actress, a writer, a producer, and a singer amongst many other things. Is there something you like more than the others? I love it all, but I really love doing comedy as that's my main occupation. I am a creative sole, but comedy is more essential to my being. What inspires you to continue to be an activist for civil rights? When I see the violation of civil rights, it inspires me. We have a need for talking about what's going on, and activism is really important. We need to talk about racism, homophobia, climate change, and I am grateful for the ability to be an activist. Is there someone special in your personal life these days? Yes, my dog Lucia. Describe yourself in 3 words? Queer, quirky, and quiet. What do you do for fun? I like to eat food. I have a sugar problem, and I have a sweet tooth. What should our readers expect from your performance in the Outlandish series? It's going to be fun, crazy, wild, what's happening right now, pop culture, raunchy and it's going to be great.

Medellın ́ El Valle where Medellın ́ is located was inhabited by indigenous peoples; he was seen by the Spaniards, for the first time, just 50 years after the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Bahamas, in August 1541 during an expedition under the command of Jeró nimo Luis Tejelo, who in turn obeyed orders of Marshal Jorge Robledo, naming him as San Bartolomé de los Alcá zares Valley. Medellin, Colombia a population in Hispania which he called Metellinum. This is the current Medellın ́ de Extremadura, in the province of Badajoz. A count of that town of Medellın ́ de Extremadura, Mr. Pedro Porto Carrero y Luna, president of the Council of the Indies of Spain, obtained an authorization to call Medellin to a new American foundation, due to his interest in another newly founded overseas villa being recognized by

genre latino / Conexiones peninsular Spain. Throughout history, Medellın ́ has been called with different names: Aburrá de los Yamesıés, San Lorenzo de Aburrá , San Lorenzo de Aná , San Bartolomé de los Alcá zares Valley, Villa de la Candelaria de Medellın ́ and, finally, it has been called Medellin. Although it is known in a general way, from the point of view of the Spanish conquerors, about the pre-Hispanic population that inhabited the region where Medellın ́ Colombia sits, which we now know as the Aburrá Valley, where the Medellın ́ Metropolitan Area also sits, the count is limited to naming Aboriginal tribes and the way in which agriculture and other religious practices were carried out but the specificity of the total dynamics of these cultures is counted more from the point of archaeological reconstruction than from historical reconstruction by part of the descendants of those tribes who were exiled, mostly, to the northern part of the department of Antioquia and forced to spend the centuries to assume the Spanish culture of the

conquerors. Many are the names that roam the memory of the city and the department of Antioquia associated with chieftains, legends and traditions, and they are almost the only links that remain with the Indo-American ancestors. Catıo ́ s, Nutabes, Tahamıés, Yamesıés and Niquıás, are some of the appellants of those villages eliminated from the face of the region and which together were called bored by the fact of inhabiting the Aburrá Valley. Today, in 2007, archaeological scientific studies begin to displace the ancient chronic vague about the origin of Medellin, and gradually discover the face of those first inhabitants and their contributions to what would become the identity of the paisa and the Medellinian. During colonial time Medellin did not have much importance as an urban center. The manor of Antioquia at that time would be held by the mother city of the Antioquia region, Santa Fe de Antioquia, in the west of the department, the city of Rionegro in the east, and the mining towns of the Lower Cauca area. Medellın ́ would be a quiet village surrounded by herds without major importance. At the time of the Colony, the foundation of new settlements in the Aburrá Valley was due to the need to exchange the provincial capital of Santa Fe de Antioquia with other regions of the country and abroad, given its position of forced passage on the route towards the Magdalena river and the Atlantic coast. Then, over time, the valley, and especially Medellin, went from being a simple station on the trade routes that came from the provincial capital, to become the new political and economic center of the region. Governor Miguel Aguinaga y Mendiogoitia, on November 2, 1675, established the entire Aburrá Valley as a single jurisdiction, from the birth of the Medellın ́ River to the place where it changes its name to that of the Porce River, that is, from the La Valeria, in the municipality of Caldas, south of the valley, to the town of El Hatillo in the municipality of Barbosa, to the north; three thousand people then inhabited the area.

DONALD TRUMP

OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI

B

y the time you read this, the U.S. may be at war with Iran and/or World War III may have begun because we have the dumbest, most impulsive and selfish president in the history of America. Happy New Year. It's hard to understate how we are deep into “Trump Presidency: Worst Case Scenario,” a movie that most of us never wanted to see but are now trapped inside of against our will. Trump has been impeached and he's very mad about being held responsible for his actions because he's not used to that. And so he's starting a war with all the planning, care and expertise of a toddler throwing himself to the floor in Target because he's tired and wants to go home RIGHT NOW! Charlotte Clymer put it best on the day Trump ordered the assassination of an Iranian leader in between rounds of golf: “Tonight, you will see spineless cowards who never served a goddamn day in uniform wave a flag and cheer on the possibility of sending young people to die in a war against Iran that they would never serve in, started by another coward who watched others sent to die in his place.” Clymer is an Army veteran, an advocate for LGBTQ rights and is also the press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign. And if you're not following @cmclymer on Twitter, you're doing Twitter wrong.

If we had a decent and honest person as the president then perhaps we'd see Clymer as an advisor in said president's cabinet. Alas, we have a dishonest creep for president, and Clymer is instead subjected to invective against transgender service members. Let's turn the time machine back to Aug. 10, 2017, when Trump said of his plans to ban transgender people from serving: “I think I'm doing a lot of people a favor by coming out and just saying it. As you know, it's been a very complicated issue for the military. It's been a very confusing issue for the military. And I think I'm doing the military a great favor.” If Trump wanted to do a lot of people a favor he would resign. That said, he, in fact, was not doing the military a favor as he apparently didn't even run the transgender ban by the Pentagon before Tweeting about it. As Clymer points out, Trump has never served in the military. He lied about having bone spurs to get out of it. His oldest sons, as much as they love guns and killing, have also not served in the military. Nor have his daughters. His youngest son probably won't, either, even if Trump leads us into WWIII because rich people don't fight wars, they just start them. And people are cheering. If you turn on Fox News (don't), it's a nonstop celebration with everyone screaming, “Happy New War!” It's amazing how little these people care about human life. Not the lives of American troops,

HOT BODIES by Tom Bonanti

Up Your Cardio Game in 2020

D

oing your cardio or performing aerobic exercise (the kind that makes you huff-and-puff and gets your heart pounding) is great for cardio-vascular health. It lowers resting heart rate and strengthens the heart muscle. But are you aware of the many other ways your body benefits from doing regular cardio? Here are a few more reasons to get up, keep moving, and do it now! Improve your cholesterol numbers with

regular exercise. Vigorous physical activity seems to raise your HDL “good” cholesterol, which helps to lower and keep in check the LDL “bad” cholesterol. The latter numbers make you more likely to build up harmful plaque in arteries which can result in strokes and heart attacks. Exercise can help fight many forms of pain in the body. A sedentary life paired with poor nutrition can lead to all kinds of aches and pains and stiffness. Moving around, staying active and stretching helps to keep your weight down and your joints limber. As you age, your knees and

other joints can suffer the pain of osteoarthritis. Don't give into it! Aerobic activities like walking, biking, swimming and cycling can ease the pain and inflammation in arthritic joints. Just be sensible and don't overdo it. Aerobic exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve cognitive functions. A single workout session can increase blood flow to the part of your brain called the prefrontal cortex which helps you think clearer, remember longer, and organize information more efficiently. Some studies suggest that active people are less likely to get Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia because exercise helps prevent such factors as obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes which can be precursors to dementia. Exercise bolsters the immune system. A stronger, fitter person is more resilient against the bacteria and viruses that cause flu and colds. Aerobic activity helps your circulatory and lymphatic systems to ward off germs that can knock out a less healthy person for days or weeks. Flex those muscles, fight those nasty bugs! Regular exercise improves your mood and leads to better sleep. Running, walking, cycling, swimming and weight training can ease depression, soothe anxiety, and alleviate crippling panic attacks. Part of the reason might be that

physical activity seems to enlarge the hippocampus-an area of the brain that manages emotion and slows the breakdown of brain cells caused by stress, poor nutrition, and environmental pollutants. Additionally, people who exercise report better sleep patterns which help them arise most mornings refreshed and revitalized. So how much exercise do you need to feel and look better and live a longer, healthier life? Standard recommendations call for 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day for starters. Upping your cardio game plan to 300 minutes/week or higher can lead to even greater benefits. Always keep your doctor posted about your exercise program, especially if you are just beginning!

HOT ADVICE

By Andreus Quinones

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Dear Andreus, My fiancĂŠ and I live together as of two months ago now. His mother has a key to our place, since he was living there alone before. She comes by every so often and cooks and cleans, but she also moves things around and I am sure has seen a bit more of our belongings than what I am comfortable with. She is his world, but I feel like she should no longer have access to our place. How do I relay this to him without upsetting either of them? Sincerely, Jacob P.

Dear Jacob, Whoa!! This is an area that you must tread very carefully. Clearly, he and his mother are very close if she is coming over to cook and clean. If this is something that you feel very strongly about, you must approach it delicately. Instead of telling him that you don't think that she should have keys or access anymore, maybe you can offer to do the things that she is doing. Then maybe suggest for the sake of privacy only the two of you having keys, and both visiting her frequently so that no one is left out. You might score extra points with them both, but you certainly don't want to get in between a man and his momma!

82 | Hotspots.LGBT

Dear Andreus, I have one brother and we are both gay. He has been in a horrible relationship for just about two years now. I am not sure what kind of hold his boyfriend has on him, but it is a violent situation. I don't know how many times I have seen my brother with black eyes and busted lips. I have threatened to call the police, and he tells me to stay out of it. It hurts so bad to see my brother being abused, and I am so fearful for him. This guy is a monster. Why can't he see that this is not right? Sincerely,

Roderick V. Dear Roderick. I am very sorry to hear that your brother is in an abusive relationship. Believe it or not, this happens all too often. The unfortunate thing is that people are usually unlikely to change their situation until they themselves become disgusted with it. You can talk until you're blue in the face, but that person must be ready to change their situation. If you have already expressed your concern, you can only continue to be supportive, try to get him some help, and pray that he leaves before it gets any worse than it already is.

Altar Boyz Presented by Island City Stage Jan 16 through February 16

Having saved souls on the Ohio bingo-halland-pancake-breakfast circuit with rousing songs such as "Jesus Called Me on My Cell Phone" and "God Put the Rhythm in Me", the Altar Boyz, Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham, have taken their heavenly boy-band act on the road and are making a inal stop in sinful Wilton Manors. The rousing hit musical "Altar Boyz" sings and dances its way onto Island City Stage to help kick o the New Year. With a book by Kevin Del Aguila and music and lyrics by Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker, the show ran for 5 years O-Broadway and has played at theaters all over the country. With nods to N'Sync and The Backstreet Boys, the show is a riot for all ages and audiences. "Long a favorite musical of one our supporters, Jim Laird, this production of 'Altar Boyz' would not be possible without his generous support" said Managing Director Marty Childers." Artistic Director Andy Rogow added that, "Thanks to Jim we are able to bring in guest artists from New

York and Los Angeles and expand the technical capabilities of our theater. It's de initely going to rock the crowd!" Directed by Rogow, the cast features Jonathan Furedy as Matthew, Sahid Pabon as Mark, Brian Varela as Juan, Jarrad Green as Luke and Chris Robertson as Abraham. The creative team includes scenic and lighting design by Ardean Landhuis, costume design by Emil White and sound design by David Hart. As an added incentive for sinners who may have not yet experienced the awesome transformational power of theater, special "Pack a Pew!" performances have been added on Wednesdays Jan. 22 and 29 with discounted tickets available. "Altar Boyz" begins previews on Jan. 16 and 17 with a Carbonell and press opening on Jan. 18. Performances are Wednesdays at 7:30 Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 5pm through Feb.16 at the home of Island City Stage, The Wilton Theatre Factory, 2304 N Dixie Hwy, Wilton Manors.
