Latrice Royale and Christopher Hamblin Present: Here's To Life, a Homecoming!
By: Scott Holland

friend of over 20 years, and her talented hubby for this Hotspots interview:
We all have seen your proposal video, but how did you meet? And when did you each know he was the one? Christopher - I went to see Latrice perform at the Edge in Knoxville Tenn where I was living at the time. I went to the show like any other fan, and I offered to help take pics in the meet and greet, and now 7 years later I am still doing the meet and greet. After the club that night we talked for quite awhile and he messaged me before I even got back to my place. A few weeks later we had a conversation on the phone and it seemed like it was getting more serious and then he ghosted me because he felt we were not on the same page. But then we Photo: Jenny Gorman
Latrice Royale: Here's to Life is a one woman show which combines her love of story-telling and music on Saturday, February 1 at 7 and 9:30 pm at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center (3385 N.E. 188 Street). Born Timothy Wilcots in Compton, California, Latrice Royale is large and in charge, chunky yet funky, bold and beautiful! After 20 years in the business of female impersonation, Latrice's unique talent came to the attention of the world on RuPaul's Drag Race in 2012 as well as during her return to RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars in 2019. Accompanied by her husband Christopher Hamblin, they take the audience on an incredible journey through her life story of growing up gay in Compton, the circumstances surrounding her “unfortunate incarceration” and how her positive perspective helped her get through it all. It was once again a pleasure to sit down with my

talked things out, and I told him if he wanted to prove he was the one he would have to start doing that, and he did. When we inally had a good make out session, I knew he was the one! Latrice – That irst night, I dropped my sharpie on purpose, he bent over to pick it up and the rest is history. I knew I was in trouble that very irst night when we stayed up talking all night. I was denying it but the following weekend we saw each other and talked the entire night and I knew.
Tell me about how the proposal came together? Latrice - Honestly I started thinking about it 2 years before I actually executed it. I planned it for that night as I knew we would be in Seattle, and holds a special place in both our hearts. The week prior to the proposal the Pulse massacre happened and I was re-thinking it, but I decided we needed some good love stories out there, so I went ahead with it.
Your 8th year producing Miss and Mr. Pride South Florida is coming up on March 23 at the Aventura Cultural Center
Latrice - This is especially exciting, because this pageant holds a very special place in my heart as a former. It has been my mission and goal to re-introduce the system to our community (there was 7 year gap in the pageant), and after last year I feel like we have, made great progress and breakthrough in terms of attendance. Christopher - I have really appreciated the opportunity to do something different in the world of pageantry as I am the live accompanist in Evening Wear. It's a challenge every year for me to ind something to play that will add to the ambiance and let the talent shine.
You have traveled the world doing many different types of shows. How did Here's To Life come about and was Christopher in it from the beginning? Christopher - I was at home playing Porgy and Bess on the Piano and Tim was cooking and started singing it, and I said if you really wanted to sing that you could (that ended up being the irst song in the show). That's when we realized we should have a show. The original workshop of the show happened at Hunters. The show was half lip synch and half singing at the time. We then realized people wanted to really hear Latrice's Voice the whole show and that's how Here's To Life was born. It then came to the attention of MiMi Imfurst and she came to Florida and spent a week with us so we could develop the script.
Hotspots.LGBT | 25
Are you excited to be performing your successful show in your home town right here in South Florida? And is there more pressure to perform it here? Latrice - Ecstatic‌..actually, I am beyond ecstatic, but honestly a little nervous. I don't want to say pressure, but I am really excited to connect all the dots. Christopher – I'm really excited to play with our band again. Sometimes it's just me on the piano but since its south Florida we want to show out for our home town and the whole band is coming in. We have PJ Roberts on Bass, and Drummer David Tedeschi (Post Modern Jukebox). In addition, we also Kennedy and Raul (Miss and Mr. Pride South Florida) in the show, and we are excited about that.
What should our readers expect of Here's To Life? Latrice - You should expect to have an evening of high glamour, lots of laughs, touching stories, and leave feeling invigorated like you can conquer the world. You have a lot of Latrice Merchandise, where do your fans buy this?
That irst night, I dropped my sharpie on purpose, he bent over to pick it up and the rest is history. 26 | Hotspots.LGBT
Latriceroyale.com or you can buy it in person at the show.
What does the future hold for Latrice and for Timothy and Christopher? Latrice - for Latrice, the sky the limit: Acting is a real passion, and after AJ and the Queen it renewed my desire. I was also a creative consultant in the writer's room on AJ and the Queen, and that was right before the wedding so Christopher and I sacri iced a lot to make it happen, but we really wanted to be involved with this project and we hope that this will lead to more acting and writing opportunities. Christopher - Timothy and I just bought a new home and we are trying to get that set up and get our life together. I am also focusing on getting my own music out there to the world, and I am available for bookings: wedding, Birthday parties, etc. you can contact him via social media:: Twitter.com/ ChrisLHamblin or facebook.com/ChristopherHamblin Photo: Wikimedia. Ivan Bandura
Where has the show traveled to? Christopher - All through Europe, Norway and Canada, Los Angeles, Seattle, New York City, Minneapolis, Detroit, and Provincetown.

More Indya Moore! The transgender, non-binary actor who plays model Angel Evangelista on Pose has a new side gig and we're very happy about that. They're the voice of Shep, a non-binary character introduced in Steven Universe: Future, the continuation of Cartoon Network's queerinclusive animated series Steven Universe. Jake Gyllenhaal invites you to the Fun Home This is not a drill: Fun Home is going to be a movie. The autobiographical, bittersweet musical about a young lesbian's coming-of-age in her family's funeral-home business – one run by her difficult yet loving and deeply closeted father – will continue its evolution from Alison Bechdel-created graphic memoir to Tony Awardwinning stage musical to bigscreen production, thanks to producer Jake Gyllenhaal. The musical, adapted by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori, will also

star Gyllenhaal as the father. Every time a queer project gets a big screen push, we worry a little that heterosexual hands will dilute their strength, but we trust the Brokeback Mountain star here. He's a proven ally and clearly knows that we're a picky population when it comes to our stories being told well. So far there's no other cast, no production information or release date, but we can wait patiently for something worth waiting for.

that would have meant to earlier generations of queer kids – and the new show upholds the foregrounding of queer characters leading lots of the action. The story takes place in Steven's adolescence and there's little question that it will continue to push the boundaries of cartoons aimed at young audiences. The future is here. According to figures released by Public Health England, the number of people diagnosed with HIV in the UK has dropped substantially since 2012. Among gay and bisexual men, transmissions of HIV have dropped from 2,800 in 2012 to 800 in 2018. This statistic has been attributed to a rise in the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (Prep). Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the UK was on track to achieve its goal of ending HIV transmission by 2030. “I feel very strongly that we must end HIV transmission,” he said. “HIV has brought untold hurt and suffering to so many, so it is encouraging to see transmissions continue to fall across the UK.” A UK Medical Research Council-run study found an 86% fall in new HIV infections among gay men on Prep compared with non-users. Many in the sexual-health sector say Prep, when taken correctly, is almost 100% effective. Source: BBC.com
Family Matters
We are not even one month into 2020 and there is already way too much negativity. HB 836, which would allow adoption agencies to refuse to work with families if those families would “violate the agency’s written religious or moral convictions or policies,” is the first bill that the Tennessee Senate considered in 2020 and it passed, 20 to 6. All five of the Democrats in the state senate voted against the bill, along with one Republican. Several other Republicans argued against the bill but they ended up voting “present.” Gov. Bill Lee (R)
has already told the Tennesseean that he will sign the bill into law. Tennessee Sen. Steve Dickerson, the only Republican to vote against the bill, said that it was “bad public policy,” citing businesses that may refuse to hold events in the state because of the bill. It’s promising there was at least one Republican to vote against such a disgusting piece of legislation, but bad public policy? How about voting against the bill because it denies human beings a chance to create a loving home? I’m sure the same people who support this bill have no problem throwing chilSource: LGBTQNation.com dren in cages.

Outlandish Performance Series presents
AirOtic Photo: Les Farfadais
At Sunshine Cathedral
By: Scott Holland Logo TV founder Matt Farber's Outlandish performance series continues on Friday, Jan 31with AirOtic, the sexy cirque-style show, at the Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale. In 2016, Stephane and his husband Kyle Kier conceived and developed an LGBT production, AirOtic, that debuted on an Atlantis Events gay cruise. Over the past two years, the troupe have become the most popular act for Atlantis. Last year, they partnered with Logo Founder Matt Farber to bring this incredible production to American audiences that enjoy a gay sensibility, and this year they came back with a new and exciting production. "AirOtic" is a high-level acrobatic circus show featuring physique, strength, burlesque. "Visual beauty, an atmosphere of fantasy, and seemingly

effortless acrobatic feats… a triumph”—Provincetown Banner It was a pleasure to sit down with Stephane and Kyle for this Hotspots exclusive interview:
When did each of you start with Acrobatics? Stefan – I was competing from when I was 6 to 17 and after that I quit competing to work in show business. My irst job was an acrobat in an opera. Kyle – I started when I was 3 and I competed early on. I stopped when I was 13 and started diving competitively. When I graduated high school in 2009 I moved to Orlando (from Rochester NY) and started

working at Disney as an acrobat. When and how did you meet? Stefan – we met through my company that I created. Kyle came to work as a summer gig for 3 months and from then we stayed together. Was it love at irst site? Kyle – for me yes. Once I got to Europe my friends told me you can't be in a relationship with your boss, but I didn't listen to them. I stayed and we have been together ever since. When did you get married? In September 2016 in New York. We also got married in France.
Kyle - I was never shy either, I am a performer.
What makes AirOtic different from other acrobatic shows? Its sexy, it's sensual, and since the cast is so small you fall in love with each of the performers. When you leave the theater, you are not only thinking about the acrobatics, but about love and human rights. This year's show is AirOtic 2020, what makes this show
How did you come up with AirOtic? It started because we participated in “Italy's Got Talent,” and I proposed on live TV. At that time there were no Gay rights in Italy, so it was a taboo situation. Afterwards everybody freaked out, but the video went viral and we got over 4.5 million views. We also got a lot of interviews and exposure. I was working on a lot of cruise lines and I got contacted by NCL to do a surprise act on the Atlantis Cruise line. The owner of Atlantis, Rich Campbell, saw it and wanted to book us in his other cruises. I told him I will come up with a full show, and he loved the idea. There is where AirOtic was born. You wear very little clothes, do you ever get shy? Stefan - I have never been shy, my dad is always naked on the couch watching TV.
Photo: Simon Barnes
Since you met, did you always work together? Yes, we are inseparable.

diferent from last years? We have been adding a lot of new acts into the show and we kept the most appealing that the audiences loved. JENNA ELLIS
OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI
Y
ou can tell a lot about a person by looking at who they surround themselves with. Remember when Donald Trump assured the public that as president he would have “the best people” working with and for him and they've all turned out to be incompetent at best? It is perhaps too soon to say whether Jenna Ellis, recently appointed as a senior legal adviser to the Trump campaign, is competent or not. It is not too soon to say, however, that Ellis has no love for LGBTQ people. According to Media Matters, “Ellis has promoted harmful and ineffective conversion therapy; claimed that 'Christians cannot follow God and accept or condone or participate in homosexuality'; and said gay and bisexual men have higher rates of HIV because 'we cannot escape God's moral law and His supremacy.'” She seems fun. Wherever did she get such extreme and awful views of LGBTQ people? I mean, you'd think she used to be the public policy director at the James Dobson Family Institute or something. Because she was. After the Pulse shooting in Orlando, Ellis took the opportunity to rail against Muslims and gays. In a piece titled “Two Wrongs Do Not Make an LGBT Right” on a website called The Strident Conservative she wrote, “We cannot conflate the issue here. The deaths were an absolute tragedy, but LGBT activism is NOT the appropriate response. To begin activism only after a mass shooting concedes there was no reason to object in the first place. That is simply not true. We have every constitutional and moral reason to object to gay activism.”
70 | Hotspots.LGBT
Wow. That's a pretty shitty take: “Hey, people were just murdered for being who they are but now is not the time to start accepting people for who they are.” Also her bizarre comment that LGBTQ activism began only after Orlando is evidence of why we need to teach LGBTQ history in school. Buzzfeed mentions her book “The Legal Basis for a Moral Constitution,” published in 2015, and its complaint that the Supreme Court went too far with the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling that legalized marriage for same-sex couples. According to Ellis, the Court “told the LGBT community that their homosexual lifestyle was not just legal privately, but morally validated openly through government recognition and social celebration and therefore equally as valued as heterosexual unions.” You know, I really don't care if Ellis thinks my marriage is “morally validated.” She can scoff at my wife and I all she wants and I promise to never invite her to any anniversary parties. I am well aware that there are plenty of people who think like she does. Unfortunately she has the ear of the president, which is pretty scary considering how awful he's already been to LGBTQ Americans. By the way, I looked up Ellis's book on Amazon, and in addition to “The Legal Basis for a Moral Constitution” there's another book by a Jenna Ellis titled “Our Little Secret: An Erotically Charged, Unforgettably Steamy Romance” that also popped up. I don't think both books are by the same author but I want them to be. One thing I can say confidently is that Trump has not read either book.
I am very much looking forward to her column holding Trump to the same God's judgment standards to which she holds LGBTQ people. Media Matters unearthed a number of antiLGBTQ comments by Ellis. “The basis of believing homosexuality is sin shouldn't be emotional or feelings based,” she wrote three years ago on Facebook. “When we base our judgment according to God's judgment, God's Truth doesn't change. Therefore, our views on sin won't change according to our feelings about the sin or the sinner. Sin is always sin, even if nice people commit it.” I am very much looking forward to her column holding Trump to the same God's judgment standards to which she holds LGBTQ people. When J.J. Abrams made a comment about adding gay characters to Star Wars, Ellis responded, “Why not also a Christian? Or a Muslim? Or a pedophile? Or every other representation of any subculture, belief, and lifestyle? This overwhelming need to have LGBT 'representation' everywhere shows the
falsity of their cry for equality. They want absolute subjugation of culture.” This is, of course, not true. Even if Abrams added the entire cast, past and present, of The L Word I still wouldn't be interested in Star Wars. (OK, who am I kidding? That's the ONLY thing that would make me a fan.) Ellis, like many anti-LGBTQ folks, has a persecution complex where she sees any acknowledgement of the humanity of LGBTQ people as a direct attack on her own humanity. Unfortunately, we also have a president with both a persecution and a God complex. Having Ellis whispering in his ear can't be good.

Building Superior Biceps A Four Step Strategy
I
f you asked most guys who work out at your gym which muscle group they prefer to train above all the others, I bet most would answer the same way: biceps! Why? DEPRESSION
Dear Andreus, I am recovering from an accident, and there is a possibility that I will not walk again after snapping my spine. I have intensive therapy coming, but the outcome looks bleak. For this reason, I have told my partner that he is free to go, because I don't want to burden him with caring for me. He refuses, and I feel so bad for all the care that I require. What do I do? I don't want to be a burden to anyone. Sincerely, Justin P.
Dear Justin, You have yourself a gem, and a standup guy! As bad as you might feel at thinking you are a burden to him, he clearly loves you enough to stay and want to care for you. You could have someone that would run for the hills and leave you to your own devices. If you have asked him to go, and he is still there, be thankful for that. His desire to care for you, shows commitment and integrity. Let him be there and remain hopeful. Miracles happen every day. Dear Andreus, I get so depressed sometimes. There is

not really anything wrong with my life, except that I get lonely sometimes. I have a great job, an awesome boyfriend, a beautiful home, and amazing friends and family. I don't understand why I still have these bouts of depression. I have tried to focus on all the good things in my life to distract myself from these feelings, but it doesn't seem to help. Why am I feeling like this? What can I do to stop this? Sincerely,
Franklin W. Dear Franklin, Depression is just as common as the sun in the sky. Everyone deals with something. I applaud you for admitting it and recognizing it. There is clearly something deeper going on, and maybe it will take some time and work to uncover what that is. The best thing that I can suggest to you is to talk to someone. There is no shame in seeing a mental health professional. Psychologists, therapists, and psychiatrists are readily available, even free of charge in some places. One of the easiest ways to deal with your feelings, is to talk about them. Every day is not guaranteed to be perfect, but it can be better.

Big Little Lies actress talks #GayTwitter fans, Little Women queerness and embracing the 'other' By Chris Azzopardi #GayTwitter icon Laura Dern's queer cultural contributions – being the irst to hug Ellen DeGeneres after she came out publicly, the Renata Klein memes, the belted khaki shorts in Jurassic Park – are bountiful fodder for social media hyperbole. Every big and little thing Dern does – a new pair of glasses! Baby Yoda! – is met with great, dramatic exaltation from queer Dern-heads on Twitter. Once, I even read a tweet that asked us to imagine what the gay world would be like if gay men treated other gay men like they treat Laura Dern. She is beloved for a vast ilmography that includes parts in, of course, Jurassic Park, Twin Peaks, HBO's gone-toosoon Enlightened, and on DeGeneres's sitcom Ellen, where she portrayed DeGeneres's out lesbian love interest, Susan. More recently, she's acquired International GIF Fame thanks to her scenerychewing performance as one of the messy Monterey Five on Big Little Lies: the aspirational “I will not not be rich” Renata Klein. Surely, too, #GayTwitter hasn't forgotten that Dern also played one half of a lesbian couple trying to conceive in the 2005 indie comedy Happy Endings. Your straight mom who doesn't even know what Twitter is loves Laura Dern too, but not like you love Laura Dern. Actually, on #GayTwitter, Dern is your mom. Her four-decade career, which began in the early '70s, continues its upswing, where the 52-year-old actress can be seen in two of this year's best movies: as Scarlett Johansson's steely divorce lawyer in director Noah
Baumbach's Golden Globe-nominated Marriage Story, currently on Net lix, and in writer-director Greta Gerwig's contemporary take on Louisa May Alcott's classic novel Little Women as Marmee, the March sisters' mother. In Gerwig's richly moving update, the mother-of-two shares at least one obligatory parenting principle with her onscreen matriarch: they both love their children unconditionally. A safe place for her daughters, Beth, Meg, Jo and Amy, she is wise, tender and merciful – so understated Dern tells me she thinks she would make a really boring meme for the gays. But watch the Oscar-nominated actress ruminate on how she's angry “nearly every day of my life” and how she's “not patient by nature,” as she explains to Jo that she wants only the best for her, and then watch Dern demolish her husband's prized room full of pricey collectors items in Big Little Lies with a baseball bat. In other words, Laura Dern will not not have range. In conversation, Dern is everything #GayTwitter already knows her to be: gracious, warm, thoughtful and generous (like a mom, she tells me “lots of love” before we part). Get her talking about sexual identity in ilm, and like her career as of late, she's an unstoppable force – six minutes over our scheduled block of time, I was the one ending our talk. Her voice bubbles and bursts as she giddily reacts to the mere existence of a Laura Dern Gay Twitter. In between those moments, Dern traversed talking points like how her famous actor parents, Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, raised her in a household
that embraced otherness; the gratitude she received from parents of LGBTQ kids for doing Ellen, and how her own coming-of-age may have been different if she were growing up with the gender and sexual luidity of our modern era.
One of your irst lines in Little Women is “Call me mother.” Just making sure that you're well aware that that's exactly what every gay man on Twitter wishes you'd say to him. (Gleefully shrieks; enthusiastically laughs.)
That's going to be a meme. But here's the only thing we have to change in the meme: I don't know that they want Marmee to say that. I think they want Renata Klein to say that! (Laughs.)
I think they want their memes to say whatever Laura Dern says. Oh my god, that's adorable. I feel very honored. (Laughs.)
How has social media changed your awareness of gay culture's affection for you? I mean, I see it. You must. Awww. Well, let's just start with social media in general: I think I'm very lucky to be over 40 and discovering social media, because it gets to be a deep place of connection and instant information about the world and culture and the needs of the world. So as a woman, as an activist – and to connect me to other people and, yes, gay culture, as you say (laughs) – it's the greatest thing in the world. But I'm not discovering who I am and being de ined by it, and I don't know how my children's generation is handling it. It seems incredibly overwhelming, and I think I would've been way too insecure to navigate it
well. So I just get to be in the fun of it. And in that way it is just the best time ever. Particularly, with Big Little Lies, to see the joy that is being had, to play dress up as our characters – well, even with Star Wars too – I did start to discover the fun of memes and just, you know, I never laughed so hard or had a better time or made more great new friends.
Have you ever sent a Renata Klein meme in a text? (Re lects.) No, I have never sent (one). In fact, I send memes of other actors sometimes to people, which is really fun. I always send Oprah memes, because you look up Oprah and it's always the perfect meme for something. I think Noah and Greta texted me something recently that really made me emotional in an overwhelming way and I sent what I'm told is a meme of myself crying in Blue Velvet.
Which is the meme Greta wore on her sweater recently at the Gotham Awards, where they presented you with the 2019 actress tribute. She did! They've hit the hip-hop world, and I think it's time because they're amazing. Raf Simons (who designed the coordinated sweaters she and Baumbach wore as part of his 2019 fall collection) is a genius, and any designer that also pays homage to (Blue Velvet director) David Lynch makes me so happy.
I'd like to talk to you about your devoted LGBTQ following. How do you explain this connection you have with LGBTQ fans, Laura? Where did that start? When were you aware? I'm pausing, frankly, because I probably need your help with this answer.
Well, I guess I wonder if it was before you did “The Puppy Episode” on Ellen in 1997
or after that. I mean, I would say I feel privileged to have been raised by independen tly minded, radical artist parents, and I think that they have lived their lives relating to and feeling like and understanding the other, as actors, as humanists. My home was never not illed with people who might have categorized themselves as the other. There was never a conversation or a sit-down that happened in my childhood that involved same-sex relationships or quote “people of color” or disability. My upbringing was being raised by everyone. My mother's assistant, starting from when I was age 6, was the most wonderful man in the world, and when my friends were being dropped off by a really perky, cute, blonde babysitter, I had this most amazing man, Tony, and he would babysit me. Sometimes we'd go to his apartment after school if my mom wasn't home. I met his partner, who was the most amazing man, and they were the sweetest, most loving and maternal people in my childhood, and this amazing couple. And I remember being 7 and them explaining to me, when I was like, “Are you guys married?” – as a 7-year-old would ask, when two people loved each other – that they weren't allowed to. That was such a huge part of my childhood, not understanding that. And I am just so grateful to my parents that I got to be a kid who, at 7, wouldn't understand that, instead of being confused by a same-sex couple. And I'm raising biracial children, and it's not part of their life's conversation, but it certainly is part of their story. So I don't know. I feel like it's just always been my life, and I feel very lucky for that. You've said doing “The Puppy Episode” shaped and continues to shape you as an activist, advocate and parent. How did it affect you in those ways?
I would say, yes, that that moment was pretty profound. And you could feel the gratitude of the moment for everybody involved – and the consequence. That's part of what made it so amazing, that I was so thrilled (DeGeneres) asked me, and I got to be part of that experience. And then after it aired I did not work.
But still, you seem to have gratitude for being a part of that moment. What kind of acknowledgement did you get from the LGBTQ community at the time? There were a lot of threats and challenges in the immediate, and then, suddenly, after some weeks passed, the letters started coming in. The thank-you letters from parents and grandparents for being part of something that gave them more understanding around their loved one coming out was what just really hit me hard.
I watched that episode when I was a teenager with my mom and it helped me to eventually come out to her. Aww. Literally top three moments of my entire life: staring into (DeGeneres's) eyes and feeling her shake as I was holding her hands, the tears welling up as she said those words for the irst time in her life, out loud. So I just feel so lucky to have been on that journey with her, and then in and around the tragedy of the loss of Matthew Shepard for (human rights organization) Amnesty International we did a lot of fundraising concerts. Melissa Etheridge, who is one of my best friends in the world, and I did these presentations and rock shows to raise awareness, and we had our intro. She'd be like, “My name's Melissa Etheridge, and I'm a lesbian,” and I'd go, “My name's Laura Dern, and I play one on TV” (laughs) and just from
Let's shift to Little Women, which is essentially a story about identity. Absolutely.

that Amnesty tour we had so much fun meeting so many people who were so grateful for that show. It was an amazing moment. So yeah, de initely that was a shift. But I guess (regarding) my previous comment: It never occurred to me it was a community; it was a part of my childhood. And that's why I forever am grateful to my parents to have raised me that way.
And we see that particularly with Jo (portrayed by Saoirse Ronan), who, as a rebel spirit, has been sort of a literary queer icon. More than any of the other ilms, this version strongly alludes to Jo's queerness. How might this particular version of Little Women resonate with the LGBTQ community more than previous iterations? I would say particularly held in Greta's work, in the adaptation, in the spirit of the ilm, but also in not only Saoirse's performance but in the relationships between myself and Saoirse and between she and Timmy's characters (Timothé e Chalamet plays Jo's neighbor, Laurie). I think that there's a real gender luidity between she and Timmy's characters: role play, a real comfort in self, a real clarity about longing and different kinds of love and rede ining what love looks like in their relationship. It's my interpretation and I believe Greta's, because (Saoirse) and I have a scene where we are talking about love, that I am letting her know that she should be free to love who she wants. I think it's very clear that that mother is letting her know that she knows she needs to be her true self and whatever that looks like for her is incredible.
So you think Marmee would be accepting of a queer Jo. What's incredible is when I was growing up –
and I don't know if it was this way for you – it was like, are you straight or are you queer? And my kids don't de ine it like that at all. Love is love. And it's so gender- luid that none of them are being de ined. They don't identify as anything but loving people, and I feel like Jo is an even more modern icon in that she loves men, she loves women, she loves being alone, she loves her own independence, she doesn't want to be tied down by relationships, she feels attracted to everybody. That is Jo.
Do you think having less restrictions at Jo's age would've changed the way you explored your own sexuality? I think about that sometimes. I do too. I think certainly removing stigma from our own childhoods would make us all wildly different. And I say that not just in sexuality but as artists: If shame had been removed we wouldn't have had to de ine, like, “OK, well, you're a writer, and you're an actor and you're straight and you're gay.” “And if you like dresses” … I mean, my son (fashion model Ellery Harper), who has an amazing girlfriend, spent his childhood so comfortably – like, literally his entire childhood – loving to be in dresses, loving manicures; he loves fashion, he wants to design, he's always painting his nails, he's always wearing rings, he loves to explore. And he doesn't need a de inition. Ahh! You sound so inspired by him. I really am. I do believe that it would have shaped me differently. I don't know what my choices would've been, but they de initely would've been different, without question.
Regarding your role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, I want to ask you what it's meant to you to have Holdo celebrated by the queer community for her interspecies lust? (Excitedly, boisterously laughs.)
What did you think of the fan- iction that said Holdo and Princess Leia were lovers? Did you read any of it? I did! And Rian was like, “God, that sounds fantastic.” I can't say it's true, or that was in our minds, but I love that we live in a world where it's all possible. How gorgeous is that, if we think of the resistance as an advanced species, that we might consider luidity as one of their traits, as opposed to the less-evolved being the outsider or the outliers. I don't know. I like our club, guys. I like that the other – whatever that looks like – are now the popular kids.
It's invigorating and inspiring, and I could talk to you more about sexuality and identity, but I know you have a busy day of press. But I am thrilled to talk to you, and I am thrilled to talk about what it means to think differently about everything. I'll share that, for example, when I'm trying to understand who I am as a woman at this moment in my life and
what that looks like, I have the privilege of meeting a lot of different writers to say, “I need someone who's gonna get me.” One muse was (Enlightened cocreator/writer/producer) Mike White, and more recently I had the great, good fortune – the person I'm currently collaborating with on an idea is (Slave Play playwright) Jeremy O. Harris because I feel like he's gonna get what it is to be a woman in her late 40s trying to understand her sexuality. So you know, we all are iguring it out together. It's an exciting time. So my love affair is equal to anybody's who's willing to be a part of this party. It's a really exciting time, and I feel privileged to talk to you. Thank you. I admire the choices that you make and continue to make. To end, let's bring this back to the beginning: What are your parting words for all of Laura Dern Gay Twitter? (Laughs hysterically.) Oh my GOD!
Because you know, they're gonna read this, Laura. Um… (ponders deeply, committing wholeheartedly to the question like the professional #GayTwitter icon she is). Let's see: May we never again read or hear the quote, “I'm gay and I'm proud,” 'cause, girlfriend, if you're gay, you already know you're proud! It's redundant! I'm over that!
Photo: Wikimedia - Tomdog
Is that the most accurate way to describe her sexuality? I think that's genius! (Laughs.) And I know there was lots of very interesting speculation about her sexuality. It's so exciting to play a character in that world that also will not be de ined. I praise both (writer-director) Rian Johnson for his creativity, and I praise Oscar Isaac (who portrayed Poe Dameron) for playing up his sexism toward what a leader should look like. And so it is not just a character on a page, and it is certainly not me as an actor bringing that to it; it's me only as one of the participants in creating an iconic character based on what everybody invested in it. It really was exciting what they wanted a hero to look like. I mean, all the way to having the privilege of (Star Wars composer) John Williams – I mean, such an icon – come up to me to say, “Do you like your theme?” And I said, “What?” He goes, “Laura, it's the irst time, ever, that it was such a profound moment that I just took score out and went silent.” Isn't that beautiful? She was like the ultimate badass that even John Williams went, “No, there should be no sound.” I'm like, amazing.

EASY RECIPES
by Andreus Q
Chicken & Broccoli Empanadas INGREDIENTS
•1 large shredded chicken breast (grilled or boiled) •1 ½ cups of steamed broccoli florets •1 10.5 oz can of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup •1 block of sharp cheddar cheese (cut into ½ in. thick slices) •1 egg •1 10 ct. package of frozen Goya Empanada Discs
102 | Hotspots.LGBT
DIRECTIONS Leave your Goya Empanada discs out to thaw on the counter in its packaging for 30-45 minutes. Preheat your oven to 350° F. Beat the egg in a bowl and set aside. One by one, lay out the empanada disc, and on one half place an even amount of chicken and broccoli florets, about ¼ to ½ in. from the edge of the disc. Add one teaspoon of the mushroom soup from the can, and then a slice of the cheese. Brush the edge of the disc with a bit of egg, and fold over sealing it by crimping the edge with a fork. Place the empanadas on a non-stick cookie sheet and bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown. (for a prettier crust, you can add just a bit of water to the egg and brush the outside of the empanada. Enjoy!!
