2020 AUTOMOBILES Welcome to this week’s edition of Hotspots Magazine. I always look forward to this edition because I get to share one of my favorite passions: automobiles. This year is particularly important because I believe that 2020 marks the real turning point where people start to seriously consider switching from gas powered vehicles to electric. The best part is they are more affordable than ever and with charging stations literally popping up around the nation by the thousands, taking a long trip is now a reality. From subcompact cars to luxury sedans, SUVs and even trucks, 2020 is definitely the year to think electric!

For those of you who are still not ready to take the leap of faith, you will be pleased to see an article featuring some of the best new cars of 2020 highlighted at the Detroit International Auto Show going on right now in the motor city. We are also proud to have Ellen DeGeneres on the cover, including a feature on her very special show coming to South Florida. As always, check out this week’s Hotspots Live and a very special backstage interview with Margaret Cho who we had a chance to speak to after last week’s hilarious show at the Sunshine Cathedral. Have a great week and I hope you enjoy this weeks Hotspots!

Fossil Fuel Vehicles Are Going the Way of the Dinosaurs

By Peter Clark lectric vehicles aren't new. In fact, when I worked for General Motors in marketing way back in the 1980s, we were already talking about electric vehicles. Eventually GM introduced the EV1, an electric car produced from 1996 to 1999. It was the irst mass-produced and purpose-designed electric vehicle of the modern era from a major automaker. Today, EVs compete for market share with traditional fossil fuel models. Thanks largely to Elon Musk of Tesla and major advancements in battery and charging technology, electric cars have quickly become an alternative to gasoline cars. Today almost every major car manufacturer oers electric vehicles that make a compelling pitch to drivers. EVs are practical, fun to drive, inexpensive to operate, and packed with

24 | Hotspots.LGBT

breakthrough technology. Think of it as you did for the evolution of the telephone. Who could have imagined that Alexander Graham Bell's invention would be able to turn on lights, start your car and take amazing photos? Shopping for an electric vehicle can really take you out of your comfort zone. Gasoline powered cars can be refueled in just a few minutes, but electric cars take longer to recharge, making them less than ideal for long-range driving. The good news is that rapid charge stations are popping up everywhere and can take as little as 20 minutes to get you back up to a full charge. You need to think about how far you drive in an average day and how often you'd have a chance to charge up. Also consider the fact that you can plug in at home or perhaps even at work, which means you may never have to

stop at another gas station again. Got your attention now? EVs are here to stay and could be a great it for your life. To simplify your shopping process, our friends at Edmunds have put together a list of the best electric cars on the market right now. The electric-car segment keeps growing, and buyers have more choices than ever. Our list of the best EVs will help you ind the electric car that's right for you. Best Electric Vehicles for 2020 Edmunds puts every vehicle they rate through a rigorous testing process that involves both objective tests conducted at their test track and a subjective evaluation. Next they assign scores to speci ic characteristics and features to arrive at an overall rating for the car. The electric cars listed here received the highest marks from their experts. Here's who they think are the best electric cars you can buy today, and we tend to agree:

The Kia Niro EV takes Kia's almost-an-SUV hatchback and replaces the lackluster hybrid powertrain with strong electric motors, totally transforming the vehicle for the better. Not only do we love how zippy the Niro EV feels on the road, but the clever interior storage solutions and user-friendly infotainment make it easy to live with. EV range: 239 miles

Hyundai Kona Electric Since its debut last year, the Kona Electric has taken this segment by storm. Its eye-popping range rivals that of higher-priced luxury models,

and its interior is a pleasant place to spend time while you rack up all those miles. For quicker charging between drives, an SAE combo charger is standard on all trims, which allows DC voltage to go directly into the Kona's large battery. EV range: 258 miles Chevrolet Bolt EV The Chevrolet Bolt hatchback is a surprise in more ways than one. Before the Niro and Kona

Affordable Electric Cars Kia Niro EV

came along, it was the only non-Tesla to oer an electric driving range in the neighborhood of 250 miles. The Bolt's claimed cargo space isn't that impressive, but in the real world we've found it more useful than the numbers indicate.

The bottom line, though, is that the Bolt delivers downright exceptional all-electric range and performance for the price. EV range: 259 miles Nissan Leaf The Leaf is a signi icantly better electric vehicle than the previous-generation model. It's quieter, more comfortable and more rewarding to drive, and it offers plenty of range for almost any

commute. The Leaf's steering wheel doesn't telescope, making the car less comfortable for taller drivers, and the steering feels arti icial. But, overall, the Leaf has far more strengths than weaknesses, especially if you don't need the chart-topping range offered by the Kona and the Bolt. EV range: 150-226 miles Volkswagen e-Golf The Volkswagen e-Golf is a good little

hatchback that just happens to be an EV. Recent updates have increased the e-Golf's range and added DC fast charging across the lineup, making it a much easier EV to live with than it used to be. Most commuters should be able to complete their daily drive on a charge and recover miles quickly along the way if needed. Smartphone integration is standard, while advanced driver aids are available even on the base trim. The e-Golf's familiar interior and driving character make it a good option if you'd like to try EV ownership without spending a ton of

26 | Hotspots.LGBT

money. EV range: 123 miles

Luxury Electric Cars

BMW i3 The BMW i3 has the shortest range of any luxury EV on this list, but it offers the option of a gas-powered range extender, which provides some peace of mind to buyers with

range anxiety. The i3 also has one of the best interiors on the road — it's stylish and modern with novel materials, yet it's still user-friendly. Furthermore, the i3 drives the way you'd expect a BMW to drive. So if you're looking for a sporty electric car, the i3 gets extra credit. EV range: 153 miles (200 miles with gaspowered range extender) Audi e-tron The Audi e-tron hits all the high notes you expect from a ive-passenger luxury SUV and adds EV goodness besides. It's roomy, extremely comfortable and packed with technology, and it rides smoothly on any road. While the e-tron doesn't hit the highs of some rivals in terms of range and acceleration, Audi has done a lot of work on the battery pack to ensure longevity and consistently speedy charging. If you want a

re ined SUV, the Audi e-tron offers the best luxury experience of any EV we've rated. EV range: 204 miles

Jaguar I-Pace The Jaguar I-Pace offers sleek, futuristic style both outside and in the cabin. Even with the coupe-like roo line, the I-Pace offers good utility, but this Jag makes the cut by virtue of its poise, comfort and sophistication. Immediate acceleration and responsive steering and handling mean the I-Pace is as sporty as it is

Tesla Model S The Tesla Model S might be the oldest Tesla in production, but it still holds its own among the company's high-tech offerings. The full-size Model S combines a roomy, attractive cabin with excellent driving dynamics and outstanding range. Depending on how it's equipped, it can also be staggeringly quick in a straight line. The price tag, however, is equally intimidating. And compared to similarly priced sedans, it feels a bit unpolished. EV range: 348-373 miles Tesla Model X The Tesla Model X is currently the only allelectric vehicle you can get with three seating

luxurious. There are some weaknesses: In spite of its relatively strong range, the I-Pace is less ef icient than other EVs, so it'll cost a bit more to keep charged. EV range: 234 miles Tesla Model 3 The Tesla Model 3 encountered some early growing pains, but the Model 3 has come into its own as a top-selling luxury car which is

unprecedented for an EV. The Model 3 is a remarkably sporty electric car with a healthy amount of space for its small footprint, plus an interior that pushes the de inition of "modern." Its near-complete reliance on the touchscreen interface for vehicle controls is a bit distracting, but the Model 3 came up aces in our testing and continues to win over skeptics once they get a chance to drive it. EV range: 250-322 miles

rows. It also has the most personality of any Tesla, which is a mixed bag. The falcon-wing doors and panoramic windshield set it apart, but these features could also be viewed as gimmicks that don't add functionality. Either way, the Model X's irm-to-rough ride doesn't do it any favors. But there's no denying that this is one quick SUV — our all-wheel-drive long-term Model X launched to 60 mph in a truly "ludicrous" 3.5 seconds — and you can get all the futuristic tech that makes Tesla models special. EV range: 305-328 miles

Thanks to our friends at Edmunds.com for their insight into the fast-paced world of electric vehicles. 2020 will see a myriad of even more entries into the EV ield, including pickup trucks from Rivan and Tesla not to mention emerging brands from Asia, Europe and beyond. Imagine living in a world where you can say goodbye to the gas pump... I wonder what Henry Ford would say today if he knew that someday cars would drive themselves without using a drop of gasoline? Welcome to the future! Hotspots.LGBT | 27

deep inside HOLLYWOOD By Romeo San Vicente

directed by Chinese-American lesbian filmmaker Alice Wu, broke ground for its realistic portrayal of queer issues in Chinese-American families (Wu wouldn't sell the script to a studio in order to maintain artistic control). Naturally, this means it took 15 years for her to be able to make another film. But now she's back with what promises to be a sweetly queer Netflix YA film, The Half of It. It's about a shy, bookish, high school girl named Ellie (Leah Lewis, Nancy Drew) hired to script some love letters and articulate romantic dialogue for a kind but not-too-bright jock (Daniel Diemer, Sacred Lies) who needs help getting the attention of his opposite-sex crush (newcomer Alexxis Lemire). And then Ellie realizes she has feelings for the same girl. We're going to guess that this ends up one for our team,

The Fourth Coming of Jackass It has been more than 20 years since Jackass entered our lives, asking us to love it, and making the world a better place with idiotic stunts. The men of that television and cinematic universe – Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn (R.I.P.), Chris Pontius, Steve O., and others – risked good sense and bodily wellbeing in the pursuit of plotless comedy mayhem. That they also won the attention of LGBTQ+ audiences with their idiosyncratic form of queer allyship and goofy male intimacy was just part of a

collective stance. They were too cool to care about “no homo” bro culture. So now that there's a fourth Jackass movie in the works from Paramount, slated for a spring 2021 release, our official position is one of happy anticipation. And a little fear. These guys are all in their 40s. Bouncing back from spinal injuries is no joke.

but you know what, anything can happen in 2020. So we'll be sitting our John Hughes-loving selves down to watch it on Netflix later this year when it drops. Romeo San Vicente's idea of a dangerous stunt is carrying a cup of hot tea from the kitchen to the table.

Things That Make You Go

Hmmm…

By Troy Maillis

She’s Got Balls As the San Francisco 49ers get ready to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Miami, it’s worth mentioning that a little LGBTQ history is being made in Super Bowl LIV. The San Francisco 49ers’ offensive assistant Katie Sowers, 33, is both the first woman and the first openly gay coach in Super Bowl history—an incredible feat in a sport dominated by heterosexual males. The 49ers’ sexy quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, had nothing but praise for Sowers. “She been tremendous,” said Garoppolo. “Katie was here before I was, but just what she does with the receivers, all the skill positions guys, how she interacts with them. It’s special. She’s feisty, man. Katie is awesome out there. She’ll get after guys … It’s fun to be around.” Sowers is very active on Instagram and regularly posts photos of herself with her girlfriend. Get it girl—show the boys who’s boss! Cheers For Queers

An estimated 6% of sexual minority adults in the U.S. identify as queer, according to a new study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law. Those who identify as queer are overwhelmingly cisgender women or genderqueer/nonbinary (GQNB); they are also younger and more highly educated than other sexual minorities. Among sexual minorities, 6% identify as queer, 50% identify as lesbian/gay, 41% identify as bisexual, and 7% use another sexual minority identity (e.g., pansexual). In terms of sexuality, queer individuals are more likely than other sexual minorities to report attraction to, and sexual relationships with, transgender and GQNB people, though differences emerge by gender identity. “The term ‘queer’ has a long history with different connotations for sexual minorities,” said study author Ilan H. Meyer, Distinguished Senior Scholar of Public Policy at the Williams Institute. “Some older people learned it as a derogatory term, but later it was claimed by academics as a critical term and field of study, and some young people may perceive it as an identity that is more fluid than ‘lesbian’ and ‘gay.’ Queer identity seems to represent greater openness to partners of all gender identities.” Source: The Williams Institute

Will You Marry Me?

A major survey carried out in Sweden and Denmark found that allowing same-sex couples to marry leads to a significant drop in the rates of suicide in gay and lesbian people. The study looked at the suicide rates among those entering samesex marriages between 1989 and 2002, and then between 20032016. The suicide rate fell by 46% between the two samples. In their conclusion, the researchers note: “Although suicide rates in the general populations have been decreasing in recent decades, the rate for those living in samesex marriage was declining at a steeper pace, which has not been noted previously.” “Being married is protective against suicide,” said Annette Erlangsen of the Danish Research Institute for Suicide Prevention and one of the study’s co-authors. “Legalizing same-sex marriage and other supportive legislative measures – they might actually reduce stigma around sexual minorities,” she told Thomson Reuters Foundation. The North American International Auto Show Unwraps the

Best of the Best

By Peter Clark The Detroit Auto Show is arguable the largest automotive showcase in the world. Automakers from around the world descend on Detroit this week in anticipation of catching the eye of auto enthusiasts everywhere. Automakers often debut some of their most important products to the world and it happens in sunny Detroit every January. It looks like this will be the last year for the show in the winter as plans are underway to move the show up to June (hurray, two shows this year!) Headlining the show were the 2020 Toyota Supra sports coupe, Cadillac XT6 luxury crossover, and Kia Telluride SUV. In fact, I was so excited about the Telluride, I ordered mine ahead of time and have been driving it for three months now and I love it. Who knew? Nissan and In initi showcased concepts of future electric vehicles, while Lexus debuted a concept version of their LC sports coupe.

It pays homage to its predecessors with its twin-scroll turbo charged in-line six, rear-wheel-drive design, low center of gravity, and optimal weight balance.

2020 Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback has always served as a smart, practical alternative to sedans and SUVs. With more cargo space, off-road capability, plus more sportiness and a more

compact size than a 3-row SUV. Outlook has become the company's best-selling model. The 2020 Subaru Outback may look similar the model it replaces, but underneath is an all-new model, with a new platform, new structure, an upgraded base engine, a new optional engine, additional tech, and greater re inement.

2020 Hyundai Sonata

I have been driving SUVs' since the 80's, from Jeeps to Jaguars and I have never been more impressed by a crossover. Telluride is the irst Kia designed and built speci ically for the U.S. and is a product of the Kia Design Center in Irvine, CA. From the irst pencil stroke it was meant to convey the kind of presence associated with the original legendary SUVs – big, bold and boxy – and the go-anywhere, do-anything attitude their square, burly-shouldered shapes suggested. The Telluride's sophisticated exterior accents also hint at its interior luxury. No wonder it is the 2020 Car of the Year!

The 2020 Sonata gets a huge makeover outside and inside, a more ef icient base powertrain and new high-tech features. The 2020 also marks a return of the Sonata's design mojo. Hyundai will also add a redesigned Hybrid to the lineup in 2020. Hyundai has come a long way and this all-new mid-size sedan that offers a lot of family-friendly features for the money when compared to back-to-back with rivals. I think this car is far and away the best value for money in it's class.

Louie Bossi Louie Bossi’s Ristorante Bar & Pizzeria is one of the best and most popular restaurants on Las Olas. On any given evening, this boisterous eatery and tavern is packed to the rafters with young, attractive people enjoying delicious, scratch-made, traditional Italian food and delightfully refreshing cocktails as they mingle and socialize. Louie Bossi’s is named after the chef who brought this thriving business to life, along with the help of Big Time Restaurant Group. Bosssi began cooking at home with his mother as a small child.

He moved to Florida in 2000 and started with the company as a line cook. With hard work and dedication, Bossi was promoted to Executive Chef for Big City Tavern in just a couple of years. Walking into the space takes you back to a different era. The owners and designers spent lots of time scouring Europe for architectural pieces to incorporate into this vast space that consists of a large bar, interior dining room, a vast front patio and a huge covered back courtyard. The interior and exterior design encompasses you and brings

On a recent Monday evening, my dinner companion and I had a lovely al fresco supper. We were greeted by the new General Manager Michael Savitt. I’ve known Michael for years. He was the GM at Morton’s Ft. Lauderdale and I was a server there when we opened that location together over ten years ago. It was good to catch up with him!

The menu at Louie Bossi’s is extensive. All breads, pastas, gelatos, pastries and cookies are made in-house daily. Whether you only enjoy some delicious nibbles and appetizers along with your favorite classic Italian cocktails or trendy martinis or instead go for a threecourse meal, there are lots of options to consider. We started off this adventure with the appetizer special… poached peaches with Burrata cheese and Prosciutto ($12). The syrupy sweet peaches were delicious paired with the bursts of creamy cheese and salty ham. We requested that our server build a lavish meat (3 selections for $17) and cheese ($6 each) board especially for us, which also featured grapes, marinated olives, Marcona almonds, breadsticks and truffle honey. You can create your own or leave it up to the experts! Other traditional first courses include the Coccoli Fritto ($11) or little breads filled with ricotta and Prosciutto, meatballs with Marzano sauce ($12), a selection of Bruschetta ($11-12), Carpaccio ($15) and a huge selection of Pizza al Forno ($16.95-25). With tons of fish, veal, chicken and lamb entrees, a lengthy list of long and short pasta specialties and a rotating daily special, there is no reason to leave Louie Bossi’s with your belly empty. We shared my favorite pasta dish, the Pazzesco ($28) which is a mix of short pastas with hearty sausage, juicy meatballs and tender pork ragu. If you are a

meat lover, this dish is for you! Stuffed as we were from that charcuterie and pasta feast, we shared the decadent Tiramisu ($9), washed down by a perfectly prepared cappuccino. Other sweet treats on the dessert menu include cannoli, chocolate cake, cheesecake, a homemade cookie platter and cool gelato. Don’t skip dessert! Great drinks are not an afterthought at Louie Bossi’s. Try one of the amazing Italian classics like the Negroni or the vegan Amaretto Sour (both $11.50) or head over on a Monday for half-priced martinis! They prepare a delicious Grilled Fruit Sangria and a Negroni Affogato made with gin and Campari on tap (both $10.50). The bar boasts over 60 beers, so drink up! Of course, an extensive list of your favorite Italian wines is cellared for your enjoyment. Louie Bossi’s is open daily for both lunch and dinner. The full menu is served until midnight on Friday and Saturday. Join them in their jumping bar daily from 4-7pm for Happy Hour and get $2 off all drinks and half priced pizzas. A fabulous brunch menu is presented every Saturday and Sunday until 4pm with unlimited Mimosa, endless Bloody Mary or bottomless Bellini ($14 each). Louie Bossi’s Ristorante Bar & Pizzeria is located at 1032 East Las Olas Boulevard in downtown Ft. Lauderdale. Reservations are highly recommended, so call 954-356-6699 well in advance.

Before becoming what it is today, numerous events that shaped the history of Galicia developed on these lands. Transcendental events of a religious, political, economic and social nature built the foundations of this autonomous community located northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. Galician culture is one of the richest in the country, therefore, over the years it has prevailed. From prehistory this space began to be relevant and in the following centuries it remained, for this reason, no matter what city you visit, you will always find places, monuments and museums that revive the history of Galicia. Telling each step of the development of this territory

genre latino / Conexiones is not an easy task, therefore, here we will tell you the most important facts so that you do not miss any details if you decide to undertake a trip to Galician lands. Although there were already native settlers in these lands, the development of the History of Galicia may have its starting point with the arrival of the Celts. By the 6th century, the Celts intermingled with the natives and began the construction of the castros. Thanks to the Celts, the name was born for “Galaicos” and then Galicia. The Roman empire would make its arrival in Finisterre in the 3rd century, in. and with that, it would give the Galician peoples part of their culture through Christianization, a new organization of the territory, a new language and the beginning of the first lines of commerce. The Romans built the Lighthouse of A Coruñ a, also known as the Torre Hercules. At present, it is the oldest Roman lighthouse that continues in operation and, to our fortune, managed to survive time and battles so that we can visit it. The 7th century was accompanied by the

creation of the myth of the Apostle Santiago, one of the most important landmarks in the history of Galicia. The pilgrimage of a large number of parishioners who to this day follow the Way of the Stars until Santiago de Compostela created Galicia's first connection with Europe. The Cathedral is the arrival point of the pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago. Since the discovery of the apostle's remains, millions of Christians around the world travel the Jacobean route or the French Way. Feudalism, in the 7th century, and the arrival of Cistercian monks were the engines of the economy of Galicia. At this stage in the history of Galicia, work would be carried out on crops, mostly wine, while the feudal ones imposed a system of income that lasted much of the medieval period. However, the most influential fact of this era was the total integration of Galicia into the kingdom of Castile. This event took place in 1230 by King Ferdinand third and finished annexing Galicia, Castile and Leó n. According to different historians, the union would transform the kings into imperialist rulers who attempted against the independence of the peoples. It was not until the 9th century that the first revolution in the history of Galicia would take place. Headed by the Irmandiñ os, it is possibly the largest social revolt in Europe in this century and wiped out most of the strengths of the nobles. The people suffered from hunger and epidemics that caused them to revolt before the nobility that appropriated their crops. By 1451 the peasants managed to overthrow some fortresses such as those of the Pontevedra and Arousa estuaries. To begin the era of modernity in the history of Galicia it is important to highlight the return of democracy in Spain after the Franco dictatorship. From this, it was possible to obtain the Statute of Autonomy of Galicia. After achieving its autonomous character, Galicia has achieved a high level of well-being that has allowed the return of many Galicians and the visit of tourists from around the world who are encouraged to know everything that this destination has to enjoy.

PAUL GAZELKA

OF THE WEEK BY D'ANNE WITKOWSKI

Think about that: don't offer any help, you know, wing it.” That's not the most accurate portrayal of conversion therapy. Also, Gazelka apparently assumes that the only way to help a gay adolescent would be to de-gay them, not help them accept themselves. “I think the best place to land is let the church have the total freedom to do as they please,” he continued. Ah, yes. Let the church have “total freedom to do as they please” with adolescents and LGBTQ people. What could go wrong? Gazelka then mentioned suicide rates for LGBTQ youth, as if the harmful practice of conversion therapy doesn't contribute. “Some people never shake a sexual attraction that the Bible would say is sin,” Gazelka said. “They never shake it. You know, that doesn't mean they have to give into it. Others find a way to have total freedom. But my job is to walk alongside them speaking the truth and love. I want them to know that I care for them and I'll help them any way I can.” Like by championing their dehumanization and furthering the stigma against them? By convincing them that the love they feel for another person is sinful and gross? Gosh, with love like that, who needs hate? Gazelka then told a story about hearing a speaker talk about “a lady who was lesbian, and he said before you judge her let me just tell you her backstory. He was a counselor and he said she was chained to a toilet as a like 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-year-old girl and raped by her dad, for years and years. How do you think she's gonna feel?” he asked. “I really wikimedia.org - Minnesota Senate Republicans

G

enna Gazelka, a 31-year-old who identifies as bi-gender, knows firsthand the pain of conversation therapy, calling it “harassment” and “torture.” According to a May, 2019 interview with the Star Tribune, as a teen they were sent to the counseling center of Marcus Bachmann, the husband of former U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, an outspoken opponent of LGBTQ rights, and also to Janet Boynes Ministries, which claims to “help those who are trapped in the sin of homosexuality and yearn to be set free.” In November, Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka was interviewed by Truth & Liberty Coalition's Andrew Wommack and Richard Harris on their Truth and Liberty live stream. They had quite the conversation about conversion therapy, something Gazelka stopped a ban of last year. He was also the author of the Minnesota's anti-gay marriage amendment, which failed. The Truth and Liberty stream doesn't have the widest audience. So it took until Jan. 16 of this year for the Minnesota Reformer to uncover and report on Gazelka's interview. A live stream viewer submitted a question about how to prevent conversation therapy bans, particularly in Minnesota, “and help the youth live godly lives.” “There's a policy sweeping across the country that says a counselor or pastor cannot talk to a youth, an adolescent, about their sexual, uh, feelings of identity,” Gazelka replied. “For example, if a gay boy or girl came into a counselor's office or a pastor's office, under that law they wouldn't be able to help them if those were unwanted same-sex attractions.

By convincing them that the love they feel for another person is sinful and gross? Gosh, with love like that, who needs hate? took that one to heart.” Being chained to a toilet is horrific. Being raped by your dad is horrific. But neither of these things, alone or combined, turn someone into a lesbian. It's telling, though, that Gazelka believes something really truly heinous must've happened to someone in order for them to be gay or lesbian. He says he “took that one to heart.” I wonder if he has one. Gazelka recalled a time he asked a gay man who'd come to his office, “Were you raised by your mom and dad or was it just your mom?” “Because a lot of times [with] same-sex attraction there's not a good connection to the biological parent of the opposite sex,” Gazelka continued, then corrected himself. “Of the same sex, I'm sorry. And he said, 'It's funny you say that because my mom and my grandma raised me.' And the point I'm trying to make is we actually had a conversation that we could talk about the issues around the why and the what.”

What? Gazelka's belief that homosexuality is caused by a lack of both a mom and dad isn't how sexual orientation works. Gazelka's thoughts on sexuality and conversion therapy are backwards and harmful for all LGBTQ people, but especially for Genna Gazelka, his child. “He says that he loves me, and I question that,” Genna Gazelka told the Tribune of her father. “Because I'm like, 'How can you say you love me and still do this? And do this at the governmental level, exercise your governmental authority because you can't stop me in my individual life?'" Really hoping that Paul Gazelka finds it D'Anne Witkowski is a poet, writer and comedian living in Michigan with her wife and son. She has been writing about LGBT politics for over a decade. HOT ADVICE

By Andreus Quinones

MONEY MATTERS

Dear Andreus, It was a rough past year. I lost my job, and my finances were very tight. My boyfriend bought me all these amazing things during the holidays, and I feel so bad that I was not able to get him anything. He keeps telling me that it is okay, but I feel like I should have been able to do something. I am not used to feeling so helpless or useless, and I don't want him to feel like I am just taking a free ride. Have any suggestions? Sincerely, Carlin S. Justin P. Dear Carlin, I think that we often forget the real reason for the holidays. The world has turned the holiday season into a huge marketing campaign, which drives us to spend lots of money, showing people that we care, and sometimes just to impress. I am sure that your boyfriend understands that you have had a difficult time. I know that it is hard when you want to do more, but the best thing that you can do is concentrate on being a loving and attentive boyfriend. For anyone, that gift beats anything material. Love wins! Dear Andreus, My partner and I have been going strong 82 | Hotspots.LGBT

for 5 years now. We met during some business ventures and have both been very successful and financially comfortable. Side by side we have built quite a bit, but kept our companies separate. My company is now going under, and things are beyond my control. I am terrified to share this with him, fearing that it might be the demise of our relationship. I also don't want to have to rely on him. I just want to figure things out without him knowing. There is a part of me that feels like I am keeping too great a secret though. What do I do? Sincerely,

Freddie P. Dear Freddie, It is hard sometimes to be vulnerable. However, vulnerability is not weakness. Being able to show your vulnerability takes a lot of guts and shows real strength. If you have a true relationship that is based on more than your finances, then you have nothing to worry about. Anyone who really loves you will be by your side no matter what. The best thing to do is to get everything out in the open. You will not be able to focus on making plans or moving ahead if you are clouded by doubts or burdened with holding a great secret. Tell him, and if he leaves, then it was not meant to be. People show their true colors in the worst of times. Best of luck in your future endeavors!

EASY RECIPES

by Andreus Q

Easy meatloaf INGREDIENTS

• 1lb ground beef • 1 egg, beaten • 8 Ritz Crackers (crushed) • ¾ cups of Heinz Ketchup • ¼ cup of milk • 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire Sauce • ½ cup dark brown sugar • 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar • ¼ teaspoon of salt • ¼ teaspoon of pepper • 1 tablespoon of BADIA Sazon Complete Seasoning • ½ small onion, diced

86 | Hotspots.LGBT

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350° F. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, onion, crackers, salt, pepper, Sazon, milk, Worcestershire sauce and ¼ cup of the ketchup. Mix until combined, but don't over mix because it will toughen the meat. In another bowl combine the remaining ketchup with the brown sugar and vinegar, whisking until well mixed. Place the meat mixture into a loaf pan, and evenly spread the ketchup mixture on top. Bake for approximately 60-70 minutes, remove and allow to rest for 10 minutes. ENJOY!!

FOUR STYLISH

ACCESSORIES FOR MEN

"PEOPLE WILL STARE. MAKE IT WORTH THEIR WHILE." - HARRY WINSTON Men's accessories can take an out it to a whole other level- make it go from 0 to Fab instantly and complete your look. Accessories for men tend to be ignored, but it is a new decade and I'm here to help you elevate your look with pieces that can add a touch of class, color and character to your 2020 look!

Good memories are like charms...Each is special. You collect them, one by one, until one day you look back and discover they make a long, colorful bracelet. -James Patterson Bracelets have exploded into popularity in the men's fashion world. The beaded ones are proven to be one of the most versatile styles of bracelets. One of the things that make these so popular is their aordability. They come in many shapes and sizes and can easily be combined together. I suggest to get a couple of SETS: browns & cool tones like silver or black. You can wear one or stack them for an extra eect! 88 | Hotspots.LGBT

“Everyone looks at your watch and it represents who you are, your values and your personal style.” — Kobe Bryant An accessory that does not go out of style... a watch. I'm from the school of having one good watch, meaning save your coins for this particular accessory amigo. Although I have a few friends that have more than one less expensive watch to match with their particular out it. The new skeleton watch trend continues to be strong and is not going anywhere on this new decade. A watch (like a handbag on a woman) is something other people pay attention to. I recommend to have at least two watches - a casual one to wear daily and one for more formal and festive occasions. Could your wrist use a little enhancement?

Does this ring make me look engaged? - Anonymous Men's fashion rings will be a more common sight in 2020. The belief that the only ring a man should wear is a wedding band is gone and I'm not mad about it. These days there are a lot more masculine rings available which makes it easier for us to express our style. Large jewels, real or not, tend to look gaudy and are ultimately distracting from the rest of the out it. Also, don't over do it with a ring on every inger, you are not Liberace. With rings, less is more.

“Sunglasses are like eye shadow: They make everything look younger and pretty” -Karl Lagerfeld

They were created to protect our eyes from the sun, but sunglasses are both practical and timeless. During WW2 the invention of Pilot Glasses now called aviator glasses, became exceedingly popular for the entire duration- Classic, stylish, sexy... these are my favorite — or you can look at what's trending in terms of shapes, colors and eras. Make sure you pick the right frames for your face shape, as rounder faces look better in glasses that are more rectangular, and faces with sharp features, such as a strong jawline, can more easily wear round glasses. I will bring more accessories in future columns: belts, hats and scarves so stay tuned. In the meantime don't underestimate the power of wearing these fashion accessories as they can easily make or break our out its and style.

The 34th annual

Boca Raton Museum Art Festival

The Boca Raton Museum of Art presents the 34th annual Boca Raton Museum Art Festival in Mizner Park (501 Plaza Real in downtown Boca Raton) on Saturday, February 1 and Sunday, February 2 one of the longest running and most prestigious juried art festivals in Florida. Mizner Park will once again be illed with a spectacular selection of art from across the country. The event attracts more than 40,000 art collectors and enthusiasts to the Museum's doorstep every year. Proceeds from the festival help support the Museum's educational programs for children and youth. Original artwork is available for purchase, created by more than 160 artists and artisans from throughout the United States. The public can purchase ine artworks in a diversity of mediums including ceramics, wood, iber, glass, drawing, painting, jewelry, photography, and sculpture.

This is the only art festival af iliated with the Boca Raton Museum of Art and the only art festival permitted to occupy the full breadth of Mizner Park's entertainment, shopping and dining complex, with free garage parking. “As we celebrate our 70th anniversary, we take pride in continuing to pioneer events that give back to the community through education and programs for families, children and youth,” said Irvin Lippman, the Museum's Executive Director. “The Boca Raton Museum of Art was founded

by artists in 1950, and for seven decades has served as a major cultural anchor for the community. For the past 34 years, the Boca Raton Museum Art Festival in Mizner Park has spearheaded our Museum's longstanding mission to champion both the creation and the experiencing of art.” During the art festival, the Museum will offer free admission to festivalgoers. This is the perfect time to see the three current exhibitions:

Clifford Ross: Waves Maren Hassinger: Tree of Knowledge Phyllis Galembo: Maske. “One of the longest running and most prestigious juried art festivals in Florida, the event has become a must-see celebration,” adds Irvin Lippman.

“Because we are the only art festival allowed to partner with the entire Mizner Park entertainment complex that is located at the Museum's doorstep, festivalgoers also enjoy the unique setting of luxury retail shops and gourmet restaurants.” Twelve thousand dollars will be given in awards where excellence is determined. Onsite judging of the exhibitors will take place during Art Festival hours on Saturday. For more information, please visit bocamuseum.org or call 561-392-2500.
