Darié n province is one of the ten provinces of Panama. Its capital is the city of La Palma. It has an extension of 11 896.5 km, being therefore the most extensive in the country. It is located at the eastern end of the country and borders the province of Panama and the Guna Yala region to the north. To the south it borders the Pacific Ocean and the Republic of Colombia. To the east it borders the Republic of Colombia, and to the west it borders the Pacific Ocean and the province of Panama. The meaning of Darié n originates in the language spoken by the indigenous Cave. an indigenous tribe that was exterminated by the Conquerors throughout the 16th century. Precisely from the name Tanel or Tanela, a river that flows into the left bank of the lower Atrato. The Tanela River (the Aluka Tiwal of the natives), Spanishized and degenerated by pronunciation, was named after Darien. With this name the region where they settled and the different indigenous communities that were there or settled were designated. Later it was the name with which the Atrato river was known. It should be noted that the Spanish establishment Santa Marıá la Antigua del Darié n, the first city founded in Tierra Firme,

56 | Hotspots.LGBT

took its name from this river. Later, the entire region was designated with this name, and defined the boundaries with the Urabá . In 1508 the Crown decided to colonize the so-called Kingdom of Firm Land; the chosen area included from the end, to the west in Central America (in the present limits between Nicaragua and Honduras), to the end of the Candle in Colombia, by the east. The provinces in which Tierra Firme was divided were: Nueva Andalucıá, which between the Atrato River in the Gulf of Urabá and the Cape de la Vela, in Colombia; and the Government of Veragua, which extended from the Atrato River to the end Thank God in Central America.

Bachelor Martın ́ Ferná ndez de Enciso founded Santa Marıá la Antigua del Darié n, west of the Gulf of Urabá in September 1510, at the insinuation of Vasco Nú ñ ez de Balboa, who knew these lands for having reached them with Rodrigo de Bastidas. On September 1, 1513 Vasco Nú ñ ez de Balboa decided to explore territories to the south. In 1513 Pedro Arias de A vila was appointed governor and captain general of the new province of Castilla del Oro (next to the Government of Veragua) and located between the northern part of Colombia, Panama and the territories of the southern slope recently discovered by Vasco Nú ñ ez of Balboa (South Sea), who recognized him as the new governor. The expeditionaries landed on October 30, 1698 in the sandy bay of Anachucuna in northern Darié n and very close to the so-called Isla de Oro.

During the time of annexation to Colombia, by Law July 23, 1824, the Colombian Congress abolished the mayor's office of Darié n and created the (Canton of Darié n), incorporated into the province of Panama. In 1846 the National Territory of Darien was created with the area of t he aforementioned canton, but it was abolished in 1850. In 1855, when the Federal State of Panama was established, the Panamanian territory was divided into departments and counties. The region of Darié n was then established, with Yaviza as the head; In 1890, the head was moved to Chepigana. With the separation of Panama from Colombia in 1903, Darié n retained its title of region.

Geography: The province of Darié n occupies an area of 1 1,896 km, an area similar to that of the island of Jamaica, which is constituted in its central part by an undulating plain through which the valleys of the Chucunaque and Tuira rivers develop, and is framed through the rugged areas of the mountains of San Blas, Bagre, Pirre, Saltos and Darié n. In the latter is Darié n National Park. The dominant natural vegetation in the Darié n are forests, which according to topographic altitude and rainfall are

classified as tropical humid, very humid tropical and premontane rain.

Weather: Rainfall reaches 1,700 to 2,000 mm

annually in the vicinity of the Garachiné cove, with a marked period of drought between the months of January to April; However, in the areas of piedmont and valleys in the interior of the province, rainfall can exceed 8000 mm per year and there is practically no dry season, as it is framed in the region considered rainiest on the planet. The temperature varies according to the altitude between 17 and 35 C. The different types of soils and their suitability of use are mainly associated with their topographic variations and the geological generating materials.

Culture: The Darien population is mostly made up of indigenous people, Afrodescendants and settlers who migrated from other provinces (mainly Chiricans, Santeñ os, Herreranos and Veracruz) in search of good lands and better opportunities. The musical manifestation that distinguishes the Darien people is the Bullarengue, which is a drum dance of purely African descent. However, each of the human groups that have emigrated to this province struggle to preserve their roots and maintain their customs and traditions, they tend to favor Darienita's taste for the folklore of the Colombian border, especially for Vallenato. It is common to prepare foods such as shellfish, fish and coconut rice; also the serendengue among others. It is traditional a kind of drink made with cooked banana, which here is called choca'o. It is normal to wear dresses sewn entirely by hand in women while men dress the same as the man in the city. We can mention that the main crops that are produced in the province are: corn, rice, banana, banana, yucca, yams and beans. In the Gulf of San Miguel, fishing resources are abundant in shrimp, fish, and lobsters, which are exploited by a fleet that operates directly from Panama City. In the inland rivers of the province, artisanal fishing is mainly used for self-consumption. Another item is wood, since precious woods are extracted (Cedar, Balso, Balm, Fox, Mahogany, Cocobolo, etc.).

Things That Make You Go

Hmmm…

By Troy Maillis

first-of-its-kind The Southern Black Policy & Advocacy Network (SBPAN) released a first-of-its kind HIV advocacy needs assessment in conjunction with National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The report brought together often-disparate data sets in order to provide a more complete picture of HIV and advocacy needs for Black communities in the South than ever before. The report, entitled HIV Advocacy Needs Assessment: Health Policy and Advocacy Opportunities for Black Communities in the South, includes cross-comparisons of Statewide HIV prevalence rates, HIV care continuum data, Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program and ADAP data, and statewide pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) coverage. “In addition to its data, our report is very centered on the Black experience and making information on Black communities in the South accessible. It details what it will take for Black communities to mobilize— which is necessary to get at the root causes of these health inequities and their continual perpetuation,” said Venton Hill-Jones, Chief Executive Officer of SBPAN. “Our hope is that this document will educate and embolden individuals no matter their previous advocacy experience to become more involved, more interested, and more engaged.” Source: Southern Black Policy & Advocacy Network

power to the people

Marsha P. Johnson, who was part of the Stonewall rebellion in 1969 and a leading transgender activist and woman of color, will have the East River State Park in Williamsburg named after her. Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement for the plans to rename the 11-acre waterfront park in honor of Johnson at the Human Rights Campaign gala earlier in January. “My goal has been to make New York State the leading champion in the nation for the LGBTQ community. Let New York be the state that ends discrimination, bias, intolerance, and judgmentalism against members of the LGBTQ community once and for all,” Cuomo said. He added, “we are going to name the first State park after an LGBTQ person and we are going to name it after Marsha P. Johnson — an icon of the community.” Source: Gothamist.com

It’s Never Too Late

You know what they say—it’s never too late to be happy. Phillip Schofield, 57, who is a veteran UK television host, came out as gay during a morning television show, “This Morning.” Schofield also took to Instagram to reveal more of his personal story: “You never know what’s going on in someone’s seemingly perfect life, what issues they are struggling with, or the state of their wellbeing - and so you won’t know what has been consuming me for the last few years.” “With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay.” “This is something that has caused many heart-breaking conversations at home,” Schofield, who has been married for 27 years, added in his Instagram comment. “Yes, I am feeling pain and confusion, but that comes only from the hurt that I am causing to my family.” It takes a lot of courage and strength to come out, especially in such a public way. Congratulations, Mr. Schofield—we are proud of you! Source: CNN.com
