History The arrival of the first settlers, in December 1726, is taken precisely as the culminating moment of the founding process of the city of Montevideo, which takes place between 1724 and 1730. On December 20, 1726, a population register was made and, finally, on December 24, a delineation plan was drawn up and designated as San Felipe and Santiago de Montevideo, a name that would later be abbreviated in Montevideo. Things That Make You Go
Hmmm…
By Troy Maillis
Knowledge is Power Last week the City of Miami unanimously voted to create an LGBTQ Advisory Board. The Board will advise the City Commission, Mayor, city departments and governmental entities on issues that relate to the LGBTQ community. The LGBTQ Advisory Board will promote the City of Miami as an LGBTQ-inclusive community. Commissioner Joe Carollo lead the initiative as the prime sponsor of the ordinance. Commissioner Carollo was joined by Commissioner Ken Russell, Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla, Commissioner Manolo Reyes, and Mayor Francis Suarez as co-sponsors. The creation of an LGBTQ Advisory Board is a great step forward in keeping the commission informed and connected to the LGBTQ community’s challenges and opportunities that face them in the City of Miami. Many issues bring unique or enhanced challenges to the LGBTQ community including youth homelessness, health care access for people who are transgender, maintaining basic protections against discrimination and hate crimes, domestic violence, and aging LGBTQ adults. Homophobia is Out
Homophobia will now be illegal in Switzerland. According to recent reports, the law that protects citizens from racial, ethnic and religious persecution will now also include discrimination based on sexual orientation. “The result sends a strong sign of acceptance for lesbians, gays and bisexuals”, the gay rights organization Pink Cross said in a statement. “With this very clear result, the Swiss population confirms that the protection of minorities against hate and discrimination is important”, noted Salome Zimmermann, co-president of the Swiss lesbian organization LOS. “We will keep a close eye on the implementation of the law and want to make sure that the freedom of expression remains guaranteed”, MP David Trachsel told Swiss television SRF. Beating The Odds If you’re feeling sick, put down the NyQuil and grab your lube instead. According to Dr. Jennifer Landa, a hormone-therapy specialist, masturbation can produce the right kind of environment for a strengthened immune system to thrive. Studies have shown that achieving orgasm through masturbation provides a rush of feel-good hormones (such as dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin) and can re-balance our levels of cortisol (a stress-inducing hormone). This helps our immune system function at a higher level. The surge in “feel-good” hormones also promotes a more relaxed and calm state of being, making it easier to achieve restful sleep, which is a critical part in maintaining a high-functioning immune system.
