A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER BY PETER JACKSON

Welcoming the world to Wilton Manors

D

escribing Wilton Manors to a closeted LGBTQ+ individual living in small town USA can be somewhat like trying to verbalize the magic of Disney World to a child. “Imagine a lush, tropical island city with 15 parks, eternal blue skies and seven miles of waterways where you are free to be whoever you were meant to be. There are more than 16 gay bars and nightlife venues as well as two theater companies for your entertainment, offering everything from world-class drag shows to leather scenes, premium all-night dancing to strip shows. “Before you hit the town, you can stop at a gay men’s spa for an invigorating body scrub and massage, get a stylish haircut from a gay barber, and buy a hot new outfit from a gay boutique. On your way to a gay café to meet friends, you can shop for treasures at a gay thrift store, call a gay real estate agent to find a place to live or stop in at a gay travel agent to plan a gay cruise…” All kidding aside, in a world with an abundance of hate and intolerance, Wilton Manors is a magical place for LGBTQ+ people. It’s also the best example, comparable only to Provincetown, Massachusetts, of a city whose economy is driven by LGBTQ+ dollars. Fact: There are approximately 1.4 million LGBT-owned businesses in the United States who generate more than $1.7 trillion dollars in annual economic impact, according to the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Wilton Manors is a major contributor to that — and therein lies the key to the Island City’s economic growth and strength as a beacon for LGBTQ+ visitors regionally and internationally. UNION For 36 years, Hotspots magazine has been connecting gay-owned businesses and telling the story of LGBTQ+ South Florida. Today, through a multichannel print and digital network, Hotspots reaches a verifiable audience of 300,000 readers and viewers monthly — making it one of the oldest and largest gay media

companies in the nation, if not the world. The union last December of Hotspots Media and the Wilton Manors Entertainment Group (WMEG), therefore, made perfect sense. WMEG is a non-profit dedicated to promoting South Florida, and specifically Wilton Manors, as a welcoming destination for the LGBTQ+ community. It produces some 50 community events annually including the million-dollar Stonewall Pride Parade and Street Festival for the last seven years of that event’s 23-year history. WMEG also manages the Sculpture Walk project in Wilton Manors which has so far placed seven sculptures in outdoor public spaces. This September 1-6, WMEG will be presenting “Bears In Lauderdale”, the first major collaboration of more than a dozen bar owners to produce a week-long celebration for the Bear Community. TELEVISION In addition to publishing Hotspots, the rebranded WMEG Community Marketing and Events today is pleased to announce its merger with Happening Out Television Network, producers of Queer News Tonight and other livestreaming shows. We welcome Darren Loli, founder of Happening Out Television Network, to our consolidated management team as Vice President of TV and Digital. This merging of resources will dramatically increase the engagement and size of our audience in print, via live-streaming television, e-mail, social media, websites and live events. Come to think of it, Wilton Manors is a lot like Disney World — and it’s our privilege to promote this magical city and LGBTQ+ friendly South Florida to the world.

M

ona’s Cocktail Lounge has stood the test of time as an LBGTQ staple in South Florida for almost 24 years under the watchful eye of founder and owner, Jerry Schultz, both avuncular and dog-lover. But what did Schultz say that he regrets in life? And exactly who is Mona?

In Chicago. Specifically, in the Harlem and Foster area. What do you miss about it there? Family and friends. How long have you lived in South Florida? For 40 years.

What’s your claim-to-fame? I’m the owner and founder of Mona’s Cocktail Lounge.

Why did you move here? Fred Allegretti built Shooter’s. I move here to be the general manager.

Where did you grow up?

What part of South Florida

do you live in? In Pompano Beach. What do you like most about living here? The quiet. Where do you hang out in South Florida? At Mona’s Bar and at home. What South Florida venue do you miss that’s gone? Lefty’s bar. If you had to live somewhere else other than here, where would you live? I don’t have any plans to move!

Yes, the patio is named after a dog as well (laughs). The patio is called “Lisa’s Backyard.” How did you come up with all the wild décor in the bar? With the help of Martell [a brand of cognac] and pot. What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened at Mona’s? The AIDS Walk, years ago. I walked that with an itsy, bitsy, yellow bikini, and Mona’s raised $21,500.

When did you open Mona’s? Mona’s celebrates its 24th anniversary on August 2nd.

Who is Mona’s named after? Mona’s is named after my dog, Miss Mona I. I’m now raising Miss Mona III. And I’m looking for Miss Lisa III (laughs). Is Mona’s patio named after a dog, too?

What would your drag name be? How about Miss WTF? What’s the weirdest question that a customer has asked you? “What are you worth?” What have you personally been doing to keep yourself busy during the quarantine? Spending a lot of money refreshing the bar—everyday! What celebrity did you act like a “fan” around? Bob Hope—I met him twice. What’s the last thing that you looked at online? Sheets and pillowcases. And cooking recipes…

Why did you open it? Because I always loved the small-bar businesses. What did you do before you opened Mona’s? I had a painting company for 22 years. It was called Do-It Rite Wallcovering.

Which one of your old jobs least prepared you for what you do now? I don’t know. Maybe pumping gas…? Checking oil…?

Jerry Schultz: Would I pose nude? It depends.

What have you done with Mona’s to meet the challenges of the pandemic? We’re wide awake to this, and we’re doing our part 100 percent.

Would you ever pose nude? At my age? That depends! What’s the best place that you’ve ever visited? Hawaii.

Will you ever retire? I’m 73, so no!

What are you an expert at? Leading, not following.

What’s your succession plan? Been there; done that! Next!!

If God were to take you tomorrow, how would you like to be remembered? Continued >

JERRY SCHULTZ: THE MAN BEHIND MONA’S Continued

You all know, I pay it forward. I hope you loved Mona’s Cocktail Lounge, like I loved Lefty’s. What do you want to live long enough to see? Women running our country. What’s your favorite movie? Burlesque. What drives you crazy? People who want to “be,” but they’re not! How many pets have you had in your lifetime? Way too many to mention. How would you feel if your pet was the master in heaven, and you were the pet? What goes around, comes around, right?! Do you like zoos? I would rather see animals in the wild. Would you give a kidney to a relative or close friend? Yes! What’s something that you learned in life only when you got older? That success knows no failure. What did you learn from your parents? I only learned from my 46 | HotspotsMagazine.com

mom, and I learned compassion, love and acceptance. Fuck my old man. From him, I learned nothing!

Nothing!

Who’s your favorite performer? I have many — more than one. What’s your best characteristic? Generosity.

If you were a musical instrument, what would you be? The drums.

How do you enjoy spending your time? With my dogs at home. What celebrity do you have crush on? Male or female? I have 12 of each! Who do you admire? Me! If you could bring one person back from the dead, who would it be? My mom. Where would you go in a time machine? I would go back in time, and I would come out younger. How old were you when you came out? Twenty-four. What would your last meal be? Do I have to say his name (laughs)? What do you worry about?

What are you afraid of? Nothing scares me anymore.

Are you more like a sheep or a wolf? “Woof!” Who depends on you, and for what? My family and staff do for support. Who are you closest with? My staff. What would your autobiography be called? Just Me! What’s on your bucket list? An African safari. What’s your greatest regret in life? Coming out way too late in life. What’s something secretive about you that people don’t know? All my dirty little secrets. Where can we see you? I’m all over town supporting the small businesses. They need us now. And don’t forget to tip the staff well. They need help, too!

SEX Talk SEX AND THE

STONEWALL GENERATION

Himeros doesn’t retire when you do by Richard Firsten “Who is Himeros?” you ask. He’s the Greek god of your libido, your ability to show affection, your level of sexual desire, and along with his brother Eros, he gives you the ability to love. But most of all, Himeros personifies lust, with which he’s generously imbued many of us, reasonably gifted others of us, and decided not to share with a few of us. When I was 62, I retired from my work, but Himeros didn’t retire along with me. Quite the contrary; I still feel his magical power inside me. Among groups of friends in their 60s, 70s, and even 80s – let’s call them the Stonewall Generation – topics they discuss differ little from what younger men talk about outside of discussions about their aches and pains. They chat about the dating scene, escapades at the baths, or meeting guys at bars or clubs. The Stonewall Generation is very much alive when it comes to matters of eroticism, sensuality, and just plain sex. SEXUAL SPARK Many younger men consider older men over the hill, but they’re wrong. They think older 50 | HotspotsMagazine.com

men don’t have that inner sexual spark anymore. What they would understand if they have sex with men of the Stonewall Generation is that the spark in those older men easily turns into a flame and that they will often experience a depth of empathy, sensitivity, and sexual finesse from older men that they themselves haven’t developed yet. Himeros has made sure that in most of the Stonewall Generation, his gift of lust hasn’t gone into retirement. As for older men, preferences in selecting sexual partners vary a great deal. Among those preferences there are older guys who prefer sexual partners in their own age range, while there are others who want younger guys. A man with this preference is known as a “daddy.” The young gay community may not realize how many members of their generation like having sexual relations with daddies. The “boy,” as the younger man is known, has experienced the depth of empathy, sensitivity, and sexual finesse that his daddy can offer – and he keeps coming back for more, much to the delight of his daddy. In fact, this was the most common

and openly accepted partnership in Ancient Greek culture: the erastes (the daddy) with his eromenos. FOREPLAY One thing that younger men soon learn when they have sex with someone of the Stonewall Generation is that older men, on the whole, consider foreplay and kissing very important. Younger men tend to neglect decent foreplay and don’t spend much time on kissing. They want to get to the “main course” sooner rather than later, while many of the Stonewall Generation have learned to enjoy the “appetizers” and relish the increasing intimacy that foreplay and kissing provide, whether with younger men or men of their own age group. This was affirmed by the majority of respondents to Hotspots’ “First Annual Sex Survey” (66.3%) who were 54+ years old. One question in the Survey, however, may have been misinterpreted. The question was “How long should an individual sex session last?” Almost half of the respondents (41.5%) said no more than an hour. Hotspots concluded this to mean, “The days of all-day love

The Stonewall Generation is very much alive when it comes to matters of eroticism, sensuality, and just plain sex...

making – or at least an afternoon of it – are long gone…” But this may not be so. Even though almost half the respondents said a sex session shouldn’t go over an hour, that doesn’t preclude taking breaks and continuing sexual activity, which could involve more sessions that stretch out to a whole afternoon or even a full day of love making. That’s why I disagree with that conclusion. In fact, I dare to say that a great number of Stonewall Generation men would definitely prefer to have all-afternoon or all-day love making if schedules permit and Himeros has been generous to them. RESPECT There are two reasons that I wanted to write this article. One was to let younger men know that when they get older, they can still look forward to an active sex life in most cases, perhaps slowed down a little, but still active. The other was to advise the younger gay generation that they need to be much more empathetic and respectful of older gay men, because one day that will be them, and how they treat older men now will influence how they are treated

Bruce Fontaine (left) and Richard Firsten

when they’re up in years. I have one request to make of all the younger gay men who read this article. I’m sure that many of you have heard of Davey Wavey from his numerous gay-themed videos on YouTube. Please watch two very short videos of his and take to heart what Davey has to say. The titles are “Show Some F*cking Respect!” and “Young Gay Men Make Me Sad …” Please do this.

SEX AND THE STONEWALL GENERATION: Bruce Fontaine and Richard Firsten met at the Stonewall Inn and have been a couple for 52 years. They have been legally married for the last six and a half years. They live in Wilton Manors.

A GOOD SWEATY WORKOUT: Your Best Investment!

A healthy lifestyle takes commitment and planning. Adhering to a sound nutritional program, keeping up with regular medical check-ups, and getting enough sleep are just a beginning. Sticking to these basic habits along with meeting the demands of work and a social life can be overwhelming. So how do you squeeze in regular exercise on top of everything else? Good health and an active lifestyle

68 68 || HotspotsMagazine.com HotspotsMagazine.com

require daily commitment. Working out with weights and doing regular cardio are draining and time consuming. Yet their benefits are infinite. You'll not only look better, you'll live longer and save hundreds of thousands of dollars in health care expenses. Doubt me? Just get sick, I mean really sick, like a week in the hospital and you'll see what I mean. Don't know where to start? Begin with activities you like, such as walking the dog, taking a dip in the ocean after work, or going

for a nature hike with a buddy. If you learn to enjoy yourself, eventually exercise will become a part of your daily routine! When it comes to staying fit, there are no shortcuts available. Sure, you can try fad diets, plastic- surgery, and steroids, but these are quick, patchy and expensive fixes compared to what discipline and hard work can achieve. A beautiful, natural body at every age obtained through sacrifice, dedication and lots of sweat is a wonderful thing to behold and possess! Why not start today and design a winning program to get and stay fit. Consider three factors as you ponder a program: schedule flexibility, workout simplification, and diversification. Schedule flexibility is crucial in these times of unplanned events, hectic traffic, and even more chaotic work schedules. A sharp guy begins the day with a plan so that he can accomplish everything that is important. Nothing is more crucial than your workout, so schedule a time and try to stick with it. Join a gym that is

conveniently located between work and home. Most gyms have extended hours, so if you get derailed don't despair. Your body responds to exercise whether it's 7am or 7pm. Workout simplification and diversification allow you to train regardless of what you had planned and where you had planned it. If you were set to hit the weight room at 6pm, but had to work late, then pump-up at home. A few dumbbells are inexpensive, but they can make a difference on days you don't get to the gym. Do some push-ups, crunches and stretches during breaks at work. Bike around your neighborhood on weekends. Take a swim in that pool you pay someone big bucks to maintain for you all year long. Do something, anything. Just put those muscles in motion! Among all the investments you make, a commitment to regular exercise will reap the greatest benefits. Life is too short to miss out on being all that you can be.

Sha-wing Batter!

by Mikey Rox After a season-long hiatus from hosting in-the-stands fans at its 30 ballparks and stadiums due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Major League Baseball (and its Minor League Baseball feeder system) is back – and you know what that means: All them butts! Aside from gawking at your favorite players' posteriors in form-fitting pinstriped pants – while following CDC protocol, of course – there are plenty of queer cheers to give for America's national pastime. These are gayest things you didn't know about pro ball. Glenn Burke broke the first barrier – but it may have cost him As an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1976 to '78 (and widely regarded co-inventor of the high-five – true story), Glenn Burke broke ground as the first active MLB player to come out as gay to his teammates and bosses. While he was asked to refrain from making his sexual orientation public by Dodgers' top brass, Burke told People magazine in 1994 that his “mission as a gay ballplayer was to 74 | HotspotsMagazine.com

break a stereotype” and he thought it worked. In other interviews and in his autobiograph y, however, he suggested that prejudice drove him out of the sport, not the injury that sent him back down to the minors after a year with the Oakland Athletics. The A's released Burke from his contract before the end of his injured farm-team season, and he retired from the game in 1980. In the initial years following his retirement, Burke competed in 100- and 200-meter sprints at the inaugural Gay Games in 1982 and in basketball at the

1986 Games, and for many years he played for the San Francisco Gay Softball League. Burke died of complications from AIDS in 1995. Burke befriended Tommy Lasorda Jr. – and Tommy Senior wasn't happy about it Legendary Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda Sr. – who led the team to two World Series championships, four National League pennants and eight division titles during his 20-year stewardship from 1976 to 1996 – had a gay son. Burke befriended the younger Lasorda Jr., which angered the “family values” manager, causing a rift that likely contributed to Burke being traded to the A's after three seasons in Los Angeles. Lasorda Jr. died of AIDS complications in 1991 at age 33. Lasorda Sr. died earlier this year without ever having admitted he had a gay son.

It's been 22 years since the second MLB player publicly acknowledged his sexual orientation Billy Bean, an outfielder for the Detroit Tigers, L.A. Dodgers and San Diego Padres from 1987 to 1995, came out in the Miami Herald in 1999, four years after retiring. Besides Burke, he remains the only other former MLB player to publicly acknowledge his homosexuality post-career; no active player has ever come out publicly and no former players have come out since. In 2003, Bean released his autobiography Going the Other Way: Lessons from a Life in and out of Major League Baseball, and in 2014 he was named MLB's first Ambassador for Inclusion. In 2016 that role was expanded to Vice President of Social Responsibility and Inclusion, and today Bean serves as Vice President and Special Assistant to the Commissioner.

The L.A. Dodgers are the only team with both players who have come out as gay Both Burke and Bean played for the Dodgers during their MLB careers – and as history tends to repeat itself, maybe there's a gayboy on the Dodgers' roster right now. If that's true, here's hoping he has the courage to come out and make history while an active player, put the final nail in the coffin of the Dodgers' homophobic past, and serve as an inspiration to aspiring young pro ball players everywhere. No pressure.

Billy Bean

Statistics suggest there are dozens of closeted pro baseball players In a 2015 article for the New York Times, economist and public policy scholar Justin Wolfers wrote that based on the proportion of American men who have admitted to being gay or bisexual (though not necessarily out), there must be closeted MLB players actively taking the field. Thirty MLB teams each have 40-men rosters equaling 1,200 players who don't publicly identify as queer.

HotspotsMagazine.com | 75

“If baseball players are as likely to be gay as other men their age – let's go with an estimate of 1 in 25 – then the odds that none of these men are gay is one in two sextillion,” Wolfers wrote. “A sextillion comes after a trillion, quadrillion and quintillion; it is a thousand billion billion.” Of course, there may be gay or bisexual men in MLB who have ripped a page from Burke's playbook and only confided within their own club. Time will tell.

cause-based logos and patches into their uniforms throughout the season, like the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon, for instance, or camouflage to show military appreciation. But on June 5, 2021, the San Francisco Giants became the first team in big-league history to rainbow-ize its uniforms, including a right-sleeve home jersey patch in Pride colors and a matching logo on players' hats, in celebration of its LGBTQ+ fans.

There are 30 MLB teams – and all but one of them host a Pride night Twenty years ago, this summer, the Chicago Cubs kicked off MLB's Pride-night tradition with its now-annual “Out at Wrigley” celebration, and almost every club in the organization has followed suit. Twenty-eight teams in the United States and one in Canada host an evening of LGBTQ inclusiveness, usually with special ticket packages that include seats in a dedicated Pride section and rainbow-colored baseball swag. The lone holdout? The two-decades-too-late New York Yankees. Two years ago, the Yanks acknowledged th the 50 anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and honored five first-annual YankeesStonewall Scholarship winners in a special pre-game commemoration ceremony that unveiled a plaque behind the center-field fence dedicated to the occasion. Yet still no Pride night. The San Francisco Giants made rainbow history for Pride 2021 MLB teams are known to incorporate

Lower-level pro ball has a much better coming-out average Since Sean Conroy, former pitcher for the independent Sonoma Stompers, came out publicly in 2015 while still on the team's roster – the first-ever active pro ball player to do so – a handful of others have followed in his pioneering footsteps (at various stages of their careers), including MiLB players David Denson, Tyler Dunnington, Jason Burch, and John Dillinger.

Larry Baer

"We are extremely proud to stand with the LGBTQ+ community as we kick off one of the best annual celebrations in San Francisco by paying honor to the countless achievements and contributions of all those who identify as LGBTQ+ and are allies of the LGBTQ+ community," San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer said in a statement. A scripted series about gay professional ball players may be coming soon Author Peter Lefcourt's novel, The Dreyfus Affair: A Love Story (1992), about homophobia in baseball that follows two MLB players who get caught up in a sex scandal should be required reading for any on-the-spectrum queer sports fans, but if you're adverse to cracking open a dusty book, the live-action TV adaptation may be coming to a streaming service near you.

The project has been in development in some form for the past 28 years. Studios put the kibosh on Lefcourt's and Frankel's original movie scripts in 1996 – Disney was even interested as one point – citing lack of commercial appeal. But we all know that's just industry code for “We're too pussy to make this gay movie, so here's Evita.” David Peralta

These are the best butts in baseball according to Us magazine There's no definitive queer ranking of the best butts in baseball (and it's a shame there isn't) but a few years ago Us magazine asked its readers, majority

females, to rank MLB's greatest assets. Phillies left fielder Rhys Hoskins, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Matt Harvey, New York Yankee Giancarlo Stanton, Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper, and Dodger Cody Bellinger rounded out the top five – figuratively and literally. Perfectly acceptable. Fine donkadonks all around.

But are there better booties at-bat? Consider Diamondback David Peralta, Los Angeles Angel Mike Trout, and Orioles first baseman Chris Davis the next time they take the plate. Seventh-inning stretch, anyone? Bryce Harper & Giancarlo Stanton

pisode three starts out with the girls counting the votes and finding out that 9 votes went to Jiggly and 2 to Yara. Obviously Jiggly voted for Yara, so they ask who was the other vote, and Trinity fessed up immediately. She said her vote was based on the fact that she felt that Jiggly tried harder. Ru comes into the workroom and explains to the girls that for the next Maxi challenge they will be working in teams to write, and star in, a commerical that will sell a sickening side hustle. She lines them up based on height and thats how the groups are chosen. The first group (Ginger, Jan, Akeria and Silky) will be selling "Rent A Queen to a stranger for a special occassion." The second group (Trinity, Yara, Pandora and Ra'jah) will be selling "Drag 80 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Fixers: there aint no scandal they cant fix." and the third group (Eureka, Sonique and Scarlet) will be selling "Drag Exorcist: aint nobody got time for demons." There commercials will be directed by Michelle and Ross. On the main stage, joining Ru, Michelle and Ross is Tia Mowry, and the runway look is "Rudemption: A chance to do over a past look." In the end the winning group was Drag Fixers and Trinity was named the winner (her runway look was SICKENING). The bottom group was Rent a Queen and all four girls were up for elimination, but it was clear from the comments that Ginger and Jan did a good job, so the girls were deciding between A'Keria and Silky, and in the end Silky was sent sashaying away. It was, once again, a pleasure to sit down

with Silky for this exclusive Hotspots interview: How has your life changed since you were on Drag race the first time? I now have a platform I didnt have before, and my life is a lot easier. I am doing what is more needed in the community, so that people can be themselves, unapologetically no matter where they came from. I am a natural creator! What has been some of your favorite cities to visit as a RuPaul Alumni? For sure its Toronto Canada, as they always treat me like family, and the other queens there are great! How exciting was it to get called back to All Stars and did you consider not coming back? Making the decision was not easy at all, but I am glad I did it. It let me change the way I was perceived. How did you prepare differently for AllStars than you did the first time you were on Drag Race? I just had more money, so I could get nicer things. On Season 11, I literaly had a budget of $300, and everything else came out of my closet. Is there anything you would have done differently? Absolutely not. I went in to compete, and nobody expected me to compete as hard as I did. Now that you have been eliminated, who do you want to win and why? I want to see Ra'jah O'hara win. I believe she was treated unfairly on season 11, and I think this time around she is playing a smart game and is prepared mentally. You said you had a hard time after your original season, can you explain? I had a very well known magazine that wrote very negative things about me. I felt they lied about who I was as a person. Words are powerful and can affect people's lives very negatively. It did not only affect my life, it affected my families lives as well. It took me a long time to rebuild myself after being dragged down so much. I hear that you are entering Continental Plus again. Are you excited to compete again? 82 | HotspotsMagazine.com

I am excited to compete again and to give back, as I want to bridge a gap between Drag Race and Pageantry. After all, everything that I originally brought to Drag Race was from competing at Continental.

What's Ahead for Silky, besides Continental? I have recently released a book called "Cocktails for a Queen," where I dedicate a recipe to each queen from Season 11 and from All-Stars 6. The book is available at SilkyGanache.com and will be available at Amazon.com very soon. I hope that this book is the first of many (I am writng a few right now), and my goal is to be a NY Times best selling author. For her, coming out as a lesbian was easier to do, even though she was forced out of the military when she did. But now she's bursting that closet wide open. Whether she's recounting her time as a bouncer at a gay bar, meeting Dick Cheney and lonely housewives while working as a cable guy, or dealing with sexist assholes in the military, Hough is honest, funny, self-effacing and unafraid to be vulnerable. Black Girl, Call Home, Jasmine Mans (Poetry) Behind every woman is the girl they used to be. And poet Jasmine Mans wants to make sure those girls are heard. Especially the Black girls who love

girls and get their hearts broken by girls. Mans's book explores growing up in an America that is racist, that is deadly, that is dangerous. And how love can be the way out of pain, while also being the way in. These poems pulse with heart, shimmer in beauty. One Last Stop, Casey McQuiston (Fiction) After August moves to New York City, her experience there has been, well, mostly meh. That is until she sees the Girl on the Train. No, not the book or the movie. A real person. Or is she? August is determined to find out who this hottie in the leather jacket is, and maybe even find love. If you read McQuiston's “Red, White & Royal Blue,” then you know exactly what you're getting: a sweet, charming queer love story. The Chosen and the Beautiful, Nghi Vo (Fiction) I had to read “The Great Gatsby” in high school and I… did not love it. OK, yes, the writing was beautiful, but I just didn't care what happened to the characters. If only I'd have been given “The Chosen and the Beautiful,” a retelling of “Gatsby,” to read instead: gorgeous prose that is faithful to the original, but with a queer Asian as the central character, thereby complicating the themes of wealth, excess,

class and human connections that are at the heart of this story. The result? Magical.

needs Auntie Po more than ever. But will she come to the rescue? (Out June 15)

The Kingdom's Sandcastle, Luai Qubain (Fiction) "The Kingdom had me in her steely clutches in that closeted purgatory,” thinks Louie, the narrator of this first novel in a series based on true events. That Kingdom is Jordan, a country where homosexuality can be a death sentence. But trying to stay hidden can also be a death sentence, and Louie grapples with this paradox as he faces blackmail and abuse, not to mention a deep well of grief after his mother's death. Who can you trust when revealing your identity is a terrifying gamble? And yet finding someone to trust is his only way out of a crumbling castle.

Can't Take That Away, Steven Salvatore (YA Fiction) Carey Parker worships divas like Mariah Carey and Freddie Mercury and dreams of strutting across a stage with the lights turned on them, belting out songs that make the audience roar. But Carey is a high school student, not Mariah herself. Still, music is a current running through their veins, and they use it as armor against homophobic bullying and as a way to communicate with and connect to the grandmother they are losing to dementia. Then they meet Cris. Buoyed by this new spark, Carey braves tryouts for the school's production of “The Wizard of Oz.” But there's a real-life wicked witch aiming to snuff out Carey's newfound light.

The Legend of Auntie Po, Shing Yin Khor (Fiction, Graphic Novel) Imagine Paul Bunyan as a Chinese woman and you've got Auntie Po who, along with her trusty ox, guides 13-year-old Mei through life in the lumber camp where Mei and her father work feeding the lumberjacks. Mei is trying to navigate her relationship with Bee, the foreman's daughter, who may be more than just a friend. She's also dealing with racial tensions in 1885, just three years after the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act, which banned Chinese people from immigrating to the U.S. When a logging accident shakes the camp to its core, Mei 86 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Fifteen Hundred Miles from the Sun, Jonny Garza Villa (YA Fiction) Julián Luna spends a good deal of time and energy “keeping himself in check,” which entails making sure that he's being super masc at all times so that he's not called a “joto” at school. (He gets enough grief for being a vegetarian.) But one night he drinks way too much and reveals even more on Twitter. Thankfully he's got a support system of loving friends, but not everybody is so accepting of the news. As he navigates life outside of the closet, he gets closer and closer to Mat, a guy he meets online. But no

matter how close they get; they're still separated by 1,500 miles too many. How to Become a Planet, Nicole Melleby (YA Fiction) Lambda Literary Award-nominated author Nicole Melleby says her goal for this book was to “write a story that normalizes childhood depression and makes those readers feel less alone." It's the story of Pluto. Not the planet, but the person. And Pluto has just been diagnosed with anxiety and depression and is trying to figure out how to get her “old” selfback. Her support system grows from just the person on the other end of the Hayden Planetarium Astronomy Question and Answer Hotline to include a therapist, and a new nonbinary friend with a strong gravitational pull. This one's an astute and much-needed portrayal of mental illness in young people. The Witch King, H.E. Edgmon (YA Fiction) Setting: Asalin, which is ruled by the fae. Witches like Wyatt, who is trans, are oppressed in Asalin. “Wyatt's struggles as a witch mirror many of the struggles queer people, especially trans people, face in the real world,” the author writes in the book's forward. Wyatt's ex-fiancé, a fae prince, is basically the definition of a boyfriend from hell. Only this one has magical powers and is determined to get him back. The throne is at stake, after all. “The Witch King” is dark-fantasy fiction infused with humor and heart that touches on issues of systemic racism and oppression that 88 | HotspotsMagazine.com

are all too familiar here on earth. Both Sides Now, Peyton Thomas (YA Fiction) High school debate champ Finch Kelly is on his way to Nationals. A win here would be a big help when it comes to getting into college in D.C. But he's ready. Until he learns that the topic of debate will be transgender rights. See, in debate, winning isn't dependent on arguing your truth with moral conviction. It's more technical, meaning that sometimes you have to argue something you don't actually believe. And Kelly is trans. This is an excellent, engaging read. And I just can't help but feel a particular affection for a kid who dreams of egging Mitch McConnell's house. (Out Aug. 24) Last Call, Elon Green (Nonfiction) Most true-crime tales focus on the criminals more than the victims. Not this time. “Last Call” is a harrowing picture of the danger of being closeted in the 1990s. When you can't be honest about who you are, who you are spending time with, and what you've been doing, you're relegated to the margins of society. Which makes you an attractive target for criminals — in this case a serial killer who targeted gay men. Homophobia and fears of AIDS colored the investigation, if you're wondering why this story isn't more widely known.

By Andreus Quinones You are completely Photo byjustified Maurício Mascaro from Pexels in your

position, so don't feel bad about it. I hope this helps.

My husband has the absolute best parents. They are kind, supportive and very accommodating, even though they are up in age, and very Southern- bible belt people. The issue is that every time they speak to us, they use terms like “you homos” or “you queers”. I don't think it comes from a place of ill intent, but I find it offensive. My husband says they are just joking, or that is they way they know how to relate to our lifestyle, but I don't see that as an excuse. I have asked him to speak to them, but he refuses, because he doesn't see it as a big deal. I am now wondering if I should say something. Any advice? Sincerely, Randall Q. Dear Randall, It certainly sounds like they are from a different time. As to whether it is intentional or not, it is certainly not appropriate. It is unfortunately a form of microaggression. It is absolutely not okay, and you may need to give an ultimatum. Sometimes people must be educated, because as you know, ignorance is bliss. Certainly, don't make him feel like he must choose between you and his parents, but let him know that if he doesn't talk to them about it, that you will. 102 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Dear Andreus, I have been dating a guy for some time now and thought that we were open and honest with each other. Unintentionally while helping him find a job, I found out that he has a criminal history, that includes violent crimes. Though he told me that the situations were resolved, it has made me very uncomfortable and uneasy around him. I don't know how to feel, because I now feel like he is not the same person I thought I knew. He says that the past is the past, and that I should not be judgmental because these things happened long before we knew each other. I just wish he would have told me. What should I do? Sincerely, Jeffrey P. Dear Jeffrey, Love is about forgiveness. You must decide if you can look beyond his past and see the person that he is now, the person that you were drawn to begin with. Even though he probably should have told you, I am sure that he avoided it for exactly this reason. Most everyone has something that they are not proud of, and we would hope that people would not see us any differently if they knew. Take some time, think about the situation, and consider what he means to you. Everyone has a past, but the past is exactly that. I wish you both the best.
