By S. Elfman When it comes to refreshing your home, sometimes all you need to do is update your paint job. The question is, what color? Trends have drastically changed in South Florida, said Jerry Polis, owner of Broward Boys Painters. “We're totally away from any vivid colors,” Polis said. “The Florida look is dead.” He said years ago, people favored bright colors, mustards, golds, and warm tones for their homes. “Now everything is gray and monochromatic,” he explained. He said you see lots of townhomes that are gray and white or gray with an accent color, with darker tones in the body of the house. He said grays and taupes are also big interior colors. David Mayer, of Decorative David Designs, agrees that grays have taken over. “Especially the strong grays,” Mayer said. He said that people are moving towards muted lighter grays and shades in the greige family. “Amazingly, what is starting to come back is white,” Mayer said. “Like off white.” He also said that colors are coming back.

20 | HotspotsMagazine.com

“Remember in the '80s there was dusty rose?” he asked. “They're bringing back a lot of versions of that. Like warm pinks and peach tones.” Mayer also said that teal has become very popular and lots of paint stores are pushing it. Derick Bolinder, of Derick Bolinder Interiors, said he always knows what colors will be in trend from keeping up with fashion and seeing what is happening on the streets. “Fashion is always six months ahead of interior design,” Bolinder said. “Seeing what people are wearing on the street is another indication of what's to come.” Bolinder said that you can expect to see soothing nature-inspired hues, pastels, organic greens, soft whites, neutrals, metallics, soft grays and warm, nostalgic colors from the 1950s, in the year to come. You know you want to redecorate your place, but you can't pinpoint the style you want. This is a common problem and one Fort Lauderdale-based interior designer Derick Bolinder, of Derick Bolinder Interiors, is familiar with. He often has to go over popular design styles with clients to help them achieve their goals. Hotspots spoke with Bolinder, who has 30 years of experience, to help us define 10 interior design styles.

Modern “Modern is what is current, in a nutshell,” Bolinder said. “It's what is classified at the current time as the current Modern home -- like a smart house.” He said in Modern homes you see a lot of clean lines, not many curved edges. A Modern style right now, as an example, is a waterfall edge countertop, which Bolinder said is very boxy and clean. Another example are 96” doors -- doors that go from floor to ceiling. “Modern is more in your face, not as welcoming,” he added.

Mid-Century Bolinder said that Mid-Century design is about crisp lines. “It's using nature and the outdoors,” he explained. Mid-Century architects opened up walls or added full glass walls. They utilized really strong structural beams and crisp and clean angles. “As a result, since you are seeing more of the outdoors, you are seeing into the home,” Bolinder added. For a Mid-Century look, organic furniture is often used, with a lot of leather and wood set in specific angles. “The furniture is simple in its purity-- very basic but still functional and beautiful.”

Minimalism & Maximalism “Minimalism is stripping things down to the bare basics,” Bolinder said. “Everything is streamlined.” With Minimalism, he said, a few pieces can be placed in a room and used almost as art. Minimalism is more of a pared down version of Mid-Century. Maximalism is the opposite of Minimalism. It is more eclectic and vibrant. There is a mixture of patterns and texture. Bolinder warned that “you can go overboard where it looks like junk” with Maximalism.

Scandinavian Style Scandinavian style is about simplicity and functionality. A lot of woods. “It is characterized by organic materials, clean lines and detailing,” Bolinder said. The color palette includes blacks, whites, grays and blues -- with the occasional splash of color. The furniture is rounded and organic. Bolinder said Bouclé chairs are the perfect example of this style. “It's very cozy, but very clean still,” he said.

Contemporary Style This style goes hand-in-hand with modern. “It is also very current,” Bolinder explained. “It is always evolving and the palette changes like the wind.” He said Contemporary is warmer than Modern. “It is modern, but with softer lines,” he said. “It doesn't feel cold, but still looks modern.” He gave the example of people moving from granite to hard stones like quartz (man-made) and quartzite (the real stone) and people going from dark kitchens to white or greige kitchens.

DECOR

Industrial Design Industrial design incorporates a lot of beams, columns, pipes, ductwork and a lot of concrete. “A lot of hard materials,” Bolinder said. “It's not a warm look.” It embraces worn, recycled and salvaged pieces. For example, using wood from an old barn. He said this style has a lot of pop-- like steely blue furniture juxtaposed with a white wall. “It's in the style of a modern loft in Soho -everything is exposed.”

Urban Style Urban Style is grittier and has the vibe of the city. Designers are not afraid to experiment with unusual materials. “It is a little more on the feminine side than industrial,” Bolinder said. Unlike Industrial, a home's brick wall would be painted instead of being left untouched and exposed. Another example of Urban is the use of neon signs as decor. “Urban elevates and brings in feminine side to a cold industrial design,” he said.

Transitional Style “Transitional style is kind of a fusion of everything,” Bolinder said. “It is a softer version of classic traditional -- a marriage of traditional and contemporary modern.” As an example, he said someone might use a traditional sofa, but pair it with a modern cocktail table. The furniture is a little longer, oversized, and features curved lines. The color palette is more neutral -- taupes, tans and vanillas with featured walls.

Modern Farmhouse Style Modern Farmhouse style is especially big in California. “It brings a nostalgic charm from the countryside,” he said. For example, dark chocolate brown window frames along a white wall. The style employs counterpoints, like making a rustic chandelier look modern or creating a rustic chandelier out of modern materials.

Eclectic “Eclectic style is for people who are not afraid to break the rules,” Bolinder said. It brings in elements from travel, things people grew up with. “Someone might use a childhood toy as a piece of sculpture,” Bolinder said. Another example is a sofa that has been handed down through generations paired with something stylistically incongruent. “It can be a grouping of different styles that make sense in chaos,” he said. “There is still a harmony and balance of material and colors, but it's not a specific style.” HotspotsMagazine.com | 37

Several studies have shown that adding plants to your space adds numerous health benefits. It's been reported that adding greenery inside and around your home can help sharpen your attention, clean the air and elevate your mood. Of course not all of us have green thumbs, so dealing with plants can be intimidating. Here are simple ways to add plants to your space so you can reap those fabulous benefits. There are several things to think about before you add plants to your home space. Here are tips for choosing indoor and outdoor plants.

Indoor plants

Indoor and outdoor plants are very different from each other. “People tend to kill indoor plants because they treat them like outdoor plants,” said plant enthusiast and winner of two Prettiest Porch contests Jolene Wireback. Wireback said people tend to overwater indoor plants and kill them because they put them on a watering schedule that may not be suitable for the plant type. She also advises paying close attention to the instructions that come with your plant and make an effort to closely follow them. She said that an easy way to figure out if your plant needs water is to feel the soil. You can stick your finger up to your first knuckle in the soil and if it feels dry, add more water. If you don't want to get your hands dirty, you can use a Plant Meter instead. She recommends one from Classy Casita (classycasita.com/products/plan t-moisture-meter) When choosing where to put 50 | HotspotsMagazine.com

your plant, it is important to know which direction sunlight enters your home. And according to Wireback, not everyone finds this to be an easy task. “I use the compass on my phone,” Wireback said. “You can adjust where you are putting the plants according to what you find on your compass.” Now that you have this information, it is time to choose your plants. If you are a pet owner, you will want to make sure you choose something that won't be poisonous to your furry pals. “When you go to your local greenhouse or a store, there should be signs that show you which plants are pet friendly,” she said.

“...people tend to overwater indoor plants and kill them because they put them on a watering schedule that may not be suitable for the plant type.”

Also, pet safety information should be attached to the plant. If you are unsure, always ask an expert at the shop. Plants Wireback suggests for beginners include Pothos, Snake plants and ZZ plants. Pothos are a vining plant and can enhance that earthy feel if you are going for a boho look. “They are great hanging plants,” she said. Wireback said that Pothos will show you when they need water. When they get a little dry, their leaves droop. “They will tell you,” she said. “Take them to a sink and give them a good drink.” Snake plants, which grow straight up, can go a couple of weeks without water. “They are easy because they are structural,” Wireback said. “You can get them small and big.” She said if you overwater a Snake plant, they turn yellow. If you insist on low-maintenance, ZZ plants only need to be watered about once a month, she said, and can handle low to medium light. “They thrive on neglect,” Wireback said. “You can put it in a dark corner.” Wireback said that when you bring a new plant home, it should quarantined for at least 10 days to make sure it doesn't have any pests on them. Wipe down your plant, inspect the leaves and keep it HotspotsMagazine.com | 51

separate from other plants. Wireback also stresses that moving plants into a new pot it's not necessary. “You can keep it in the same growpot it came in,” she said. “Moving it into a new pot shocks the plant.”

Outdoor plants

With outdoor plants, you also have to consider the direction the sunlight will be hitting them. “If you put a shade loving plant in full sun, it's going to scorch and die,” Wireback said. Shade loving plants live up to their name and will only thrive in the shade. Sun loving plants should be front and center—and you guessed it—taking in lots of sunlight. In addition, your outdoor plants are going to need a lot more water. “They need to be watered because they are going to get hot,” Wireback said. “Outdoor plants are higher maintenance.” Also, unlike indoor plants, you need to repot your outdoor plants. “You always repot these,” Wireback said. “You have to transfer and repot.” 52 | HotspotsMagazine.com

She said a lot of newbies start with container gardening but, if you feel you are ready, you can plant directly in the dirt. An easy outdoor plant to start with is a Sweet Potato vine. They are a trailing annual plant -they typically thrive for many months-and come in vibrant colors like bright chartreuse green to dark purple. They like sun, but can't always be in full sun. “They will let you know if they are in too much sun,” she said. “They will look wilted.” These vine plants can grow up to 10 feet long! Coleus flowers are also good outdoors plants for beginners. Most varieties thrive in dappled shade and morning sunshine. “They are a showstopper and come in hundreds of colors,” Wireback said. “They are happy plants and easy to grow.” These plants root easily and come in several sizes. Hibiscus plants are also great outdoor plants -- especially in the Florida sun. “They love full sun,” Wireback said. Hibiscus plants, which grow vertically, require a lot of water. They are colorful and come in single and double forms. Wireback said Proven Winners has several articles on plants that helped her when she got started. provenwinners.com/learn_articles These tips will help you green up your space. The 13rd Annual Fort Lauderdale Edition of OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival will take place October 14 to October 24, with an opening night celebration at the Museum of Discovery & Science. The opening film will be Firebird, a touching and romantic story about two Soviet Air Force pilots who navigate the precarious line between friendship and a forbidden love. It will screen in the museum's IMAX theatre, followed by a party in the museum's Aviation Exhibit. “Firebird”'s director, Peeter Rebane, will be in attendance for the opening night celebration, along with talent from the film. Additional highlights for the week include the Centerpiece film, “Finlandia,” a thought provoking film about people who view themselves as a third gender; “Gemmel & Tim,” the true life story of two black gay men found dead at different times in the home of a politically and financially influential gay white man; and “No Straight Lines: The Rise of Queer Comics,” about an under-presented aspect of queer culture that is finally getting the attention it deserves with the success of the graphic novel turned Broadway musical, “Fun Home.” Additionally, OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fort Lauderdale Edition will present a special screening of “Mayor Pete,”

the documentary that follows Peter Buttigieg from the campaign trail to his cabinet position in the Biden administration. The screening will take place Saturday, October 16th with an after party at the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort Sky Terrace. The Closing film will be “The Best Families” (Las Mejores Familias) and take place on Sunday, October 24th at 6pm at the Sunshine Cathedral MCC (1480 SW 9th Ave, Fort Lauderdale). Luzmila and Peta are two sisters who come from a modest environment and work as housemaids for Alicia and Carmen, two aristocratic ladies who live next door to each other in Peru. They are almost considered a part of the families, or at least that's what it seems. But one day, as the city is taken over by violent protests, a birthday celebration gathers all the members of both families together, including a gay couple and a bisexual man. A long-held secret involving both households - upstairs and downstairs - is suddenly revealed, blowing up the bubble of their perfect aristocratic world forever. Amidst the pessimism surrounding the socio-economic mobility ladder, The Best Families is an eerily empathic story that

reflects a deepening social injustice in the form of humor and satire. It dissects the world we live in - the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie, the division among social classes, and the deep-rooted prejudices - to show that there is a possibility of better understanding through compassion. Following the movie, they will feature a party and film awards with DJ, Open bar and food. The organizers recognize that some in the community may not be comfortable with attending in-person screenings or may be restricted to do so because of health concerns. For them, 30 of the 35 theatre screenings will be available for at home screening. OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fort Lauderdale Edition is also presenting another 9 virtual-only screenings. Hotspots will be reviewing some of the films online, so check out Hotspotsmagazine.com frequently. For a full list of all the films and parties or to purchase tickets being screened at the 13th Annual Fort Lauderdale Edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival go to: Outshinefilm.com. A special 10-pass is also available for $75 — a $45 savings!

Victor Gimenez

OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival’s Executive Director

Miami native Victor Gimenez leads one of South Florida's preeminent gay film festivals, the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival, in a hybrid film festival this month.

What's your claim-to-fame? I'm the executive director of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival. That's my claim-tofame within the LGBTQ+ community. That, and posts of my kids on Facebook (laughs). Where did you grow up? I'm a born-and-bred Miamian. What's something special about Miami that isn't common knowledge? Miami has a lot of Cubans—just kidding. The History Miami tours are some of the greatest experiences in the city. It has biking, boating and walking. Did you ever live anywhere else other than Miami? 94 | HotspotsMagazine.com

No. But maybe I'll retire to Florence one day. What part of South Florida do you live in now? I live in North Beach, which is the not-soglamorous but oh-so-practical sibling of South Beach. What do you like most about living here? The diversity of people and backgrounds. You really do get all types from everywhere. In the United Stated, I only think New York is more diverse. Where do you hang out in South Florida? In my house. What's your favorite restaurant in South Florida?

Fuchai in Wynwood. But I don't go to it enough. What South Florida venue do you miss that's gone? This is dating me, but Laundry Bar. If you had to live somewhere else other than here, where would you live? Barcelona. Which one of your old jobs least prepared you for what you do now? Civil engineering, because I was a small part of a team and handled no project management. What was your career before your involvement with OUTshine? I studied civil engineering, but most of my pre-festival career was in construction management and general contracting. The dealing with many moving parts and vendors was great experience for the festival. How long have you been the executive director of OUTshine? I've been the executive director for six years, but I've been involved with the festival for ten years between the screening committee and the board. What's been the biggest challenge of the role? Fundraising and sponsorship has always been the biggest challenge. Without the

money, the rest can't happen. Last year and this year have been special because of COVID and its unique challenges, but so far we've handled them well. OUTshine Miami was virtual this year. Given that a movie-going experience is communal, how did the virtual festival go? We've had three virtual festivals so far. Some were great, and some were not so great. The past Miami festival was okay, but it wasn't as good as our first virtual Miami festival last year. We're looking forward to the upcoming hybrid festival, where most of the films are available virtually and in-person. We've discovered with the last few in-person/virtual screenings that there's space for both, and both options have been doing very well. Although OUTshine's new SHINE student program is still in its impetus, what's been the most moving experience with it so far? The excitement from those in the education department that we've met with, plus our donors. The reality for now, though, is that until things get back to normal at schools, we're in a holding pattern. With all your years with the festival, what screening stands out the most to you?

production company, Route 7 Productions, do? His work is mostly with American retailers, but they do handle production work for foreign films. One of the funniest productions that they did was for an Italian film called Christmas in Miami, which was one of the top five films in There have been so many. The first one that pops in my head is Game Face from 2015, which was a documentary about LGBTQ+ athletes. We had the director and some of the subjects in town for the world premiere. One of the athletes was very emotionally affected by the screening of the film—as well as the Q&A—and it was a tough experience for him, but in a good way. At that time he was trying to find himself and was very vulnerable. What film are you most excited for this year? There are so many. I'll recommend some of our non-gala spots, so these great films get some attention: Not Knowing, The Swimmer, and Gemmel and Tim. What does the future hold for OUTshine? Many great things. We're excited about the hybrid model that we're attempting, and we believe that it's the way of the future. The hybrid model also allows us to promote to the entire state, and not just to South Florida. What celebrity that you've met, either at the festival or on a production set, did you act like a “fan” around? Gloria and Emilio Estefan. We honored them with our Ally Award in 2017. They're Miami royalty and great guests of the festival. What kind of work does your husband's 96 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Italy that year. What's your favorite personal film? When I'm limited to name only one film, my answer is E.T. I was nine when I saw it on the big screen, and it just had a great emotional effect on me that no other film has had since. And finally, what did you do to keep yourself busy during the quarantine? It was very easy with two little kids at the house, and one of them in school. But for fun we did a lot of outdoor activities and kayaking in the Bay.

By Andreus Quinones Dear Andreus, My boyfriend and I are quite the social couple, and we have maybe two or three groups of friends that we hang out with regularly. We share a lot with our friends, as we both take friendships very seriously. I like that about him. The issue is that I feel like he shares too much, like the details of our sex. Some of our friends are very open, and probably because most of them are single, but I feel like our intimacy is our business and should be private. He told me that I should not feel offended but honored that he enjoys it enough to talk about it. Am I wrong for wanting to be private? Sincerely, Brian S. Dear Brian, If you are a very private person, I can see how this could make you very uncomfortable. It seems that you are surrounded by very open and easygoing people, and maybe it just comes with the territory. You could try to think about it from a more positive perspective, because it seems like he is very proud of your sex life, and that is definitely a good thing for you. I am sure that you also know that in our lifestyle, people love those kinds of conversations, down to the most specific details. Try to have fun with it, and if not, just ask him to ease up a bit. I wouldn't push too hard, but only you know your limits. Dear Andreus, So, my boyfriend and I both have social media. I don't stalk his social media, but I see what he posts in my feed. He has a beautiful body and 110 | HotspotsMagazine.com

posts a lot of pictures of it. Sometimes even completely nude. I don't like it because I don't want everyone seeing him naked. I feel like his nudity is for my eyes only. He told me that he is not posting to be dirty, but because he sees nudity as art, and that we should appreciate our bodies. He goes on to say that if I ever did it, he would find it beautiful. I think he is crazy and should stop. What do you think? Sincerely, Gregory M.

Dear Gregory, The body is art, and in today's world where we are trying to move away from body-shaming, we should be able to be proud of what we have. I rarely take sides, but if your boyfriend is posting pictures that are tasteful and not dirty, then let him. He is proud of his form, and apparently admires yours also. If he is faithful to you, or to the terms of your relationship, I wouldn't sweat it. There are more serious things to be concerned about within the confines of a relationship. Enjoy it, and maybe consider collaborating for a post. It might spice up your relationship a bit!
