It was also part of the 2017-2019 Rochester Fringe Festival and sold out all four nights. The Huffington Post called it "the performance of the summer," while hailing Ike Avelli as the "mastermind of creativity." A couple weeks before "50 Shades of Gay," plays for 2 nights only at The Pub (Saturday, Dec 10 at 8pm (with special guest Angel Elektra and Sun, Dec 11 at 7pm with special guest Shay D'Pines), I thought it would be nice to sit down with Ike and Tym for this exclusive Hotspots Interview.

When did each of you start performing?

Ike – I started performing late in life in the 2009. I idolized Joan Rivers my whole life. A talkent dropped out and asked me to step inb . Tym – I have been a performer for as long as I can remember, all my life. I remember seeing Barbara Streisand performing in Central Park when I was a kid, and I knew that's what I wanted to do. I grew up emulating her and she taught me how to sing before I studied professionally.

You have both traveled a lot, do you have a favorite city or venue (other than here in South Florida) and why?

Ike – Boise Idaho stands out because it was way more diverse and accepting that we anticipated. Tym – We also performed in Rochester where the audiences are also great. I also loved Ashville.

Who are some of your mentors/heroes?

Ike – It was always Joan Rivers as a comedian. I also love Sandra Bernhard and Whoppi Goldberg. Barbra Streisand has also been a huge icon for me. Tym – Since I was a kid, I wanted to do it all.

So, John Belushi and Gilda Radner (SNL) to Streisand, Bette Midler, and Whitney Houston.

What celebrity did you meet that made you star struck?

Ike – Tym introduced me to Linda Lavin, and when I was a kid, I watched Alice every single week, so it was the most incredible experience. Tym – I cover a lot of red carpets in NY, so I have grown accustomed to meeting celebrities. But I met Mariah Carey at the GLAAD Music awards and I was star struck.

Describe yourself in 3 words?

Ike – funny, warm, and faithful Tym – talented, effervescent, and fun

Describe each other in 3 words?

Ike (describing Tym) – pioneer, talented, and sincere Tym (describing Ike) – Friend, loyal and hysterical.

You are each multi-talented (writing, acting, etc.) is there one you like more than the others?

Ike – I love live performing more than anything. Its due to the immediate reaction from the audience. It's so energetic for me. Tym – I love everything, but my favorite is to sing to a live audience and make them feel something.

What do you guys do for fun?

Ike – I love when, I have the opportunity, to see another artist perform. Tym – I have the best times of my life on stage with Ike, so performing is my fun.

Tell our readers about 50 Shades Of Gay?

Ike – It's an adult variety show filled with everything from comedy, music, drag, video sketches and audience participation. We have gifts for participating. Come out and have fun, I promise you will have a ball. Tym – It's a very fast moving, energetic show and I guarantee you will like this show, so all you ho ho ho's come out for our Holiday show. For more information on Ike or Tym, you can check out their websites at: Ikeavelli.net or Tymmoss.com or you can follow them on Instagram.com/Ikeavelli or /Tymmoss. HotspotsMagazine.com | 23

78 | HotspotsMagazine.com

“I was a very young girl in Russia watching tennis and I knew there was something about her that intrigued me. I remember standing in a doorway looking at the TV and thinking I want to keep watching but didn't know why.”

Season five of the Peacock original series The Real Housewives Of Miami returns Thursday, December 8. The Housewives are back for another muy caliente season with new alliances, loyalty and relationships on the line. The ladies of the “Sunshine State” are still turning up the heat and dialing up the drama. The first four episodes will be available the day of premiere, with new episodes available thereafter on Thursdays. The season five cast includes returning Housewives Guerdy Abraira, Lisa Hochstein, Julia Lemigova, Dr. Nicole Martin, Alexia Nepola and Larsa Pippen. Friends Kiki

Barth, Adriana de Moura and Marysol Patton will also be featured. The first four seasons are currently available to stream on Peacock. A week before the new seasons premiere, I sat down with LGBTQ+ cast member Julia Lemigova for this exclusive Hotspots interview.

How did you get cast in the re-boot of The Real Housewives of Miami?

My friend Adrianna called me one morning and asked me if would like to join her on the show, and without hesitation I said yes. It is so fun to be with her off camera, I figured it would be even more fun on camera.

Were you friendly with any of your castmates before filming?

I knew Larsa, and I heard of many of them.

How did your first season go compared to what you expected?

I walked into it without any expectations, that's how I live my life in general. I didn't want to have preconceived ideas, so I walked into the unknown, and I am having a blast!

How did you and Martina meet?

We met in Paris in 2000 very briefly. But we were two separate ships. Then in 2008 we met again and haven't left each other since.

Did you know right away there was something special with Martina or when did you know?

Honestly, I when I was a very young girl in Russia watching tennis and I knew there was something about her that intrigued me. I remember standing in a doorway looking at the TV and thinking I want to keep watching but didn't know why.

Describe yourself in 3 words?

Curious, adventurous, and an animal-lover.

What do you do for fun? I love milking goats.

What does the future hold for you?

I wish I would have that answer, but honestly, I live day by day, and I never look to the future as I want to live in the moment and enjoy it. For more information on Julia, follow her at: Instagram.com/julialemigova.

Other than Adrianna who are you close with on the cast?

Organically I got friendly with Nicole, and I am also friendly with Guerdy and Lisa.

Without giving anything away, how did your second season go?

OMG, so much better than the first one. I got my experience under my belt after my first season. This season helped me with my own personal growth and re-booted a lot of things in my life. I am super grateful for the show. HotspotsMagazine.com | 79

Self-Care During the Holidays: 10 Tips to Help Promote Relaxation By Amos Sullivan, SunServe Life Coach-Youth & Family Services with contributions from: John Marler, SunServe, Dir. of Communications

92 | HotspotsMagazine.com

The holidays can be a joyous time but can also be stressful. Between shopping for gifts, preparing meals, and attending holiday gatherings, finding time to relax and rejuvenate can be challenging. Therefore, taking care of yourself during the holiday season is essential. In this edition of "Ask Amos," we will discuss ten tips for self-care that will help you recharge during the hectic holiday season! This edition's question comes from Brian Kleinman from Oakland Park, FL. Brian asked Amos, "What can I do to reduce the stress I seem to always experience during the holiday season?" Hi Brian and thank you for this important question. For many people, the holidays can be a time of delight and togetherness, but it can also be a time of added stress and anxiety. This is because the holiday season can bring a lot of pressure to have a fun time. There are expectations of spending time with family, friends, and coworkers. You are also invited to attend holiday gatherings and parties and of

course, buy gifts. All of this can add up to a lot of stress and anxiety. Here are ten helpful suggestions that can help reduce stress during the holiday season and other typically stressful situations.

1. Take a break from social media: This can be a time of added stress, as people often compare their lives to others on social media.

2. Set realistic expectations for yourself and others: Don't put pressure on yourself to

have a perfect holiday season.

3. Take time for yourself each day to relax and unwind: Dedicate some time each day to do

something that relaxes you, such as reading, taking a bath, or listening to music.

4. Exercise regularly: Exercise is a terrific way to de-stress and help you feel more energized during the holiday season.

5. Eat healthy foods: Eating healthy foods will help keep your energy levels up and can help reduce stress.

6. Avoid caffeine and alcohol: Caffeine and alcohol can both add to the stress of the holiday season.

7. Get enough sleep each night: Getting enough sleep will help you stay energized and relaxed during the holidays.

8. Spend time with loved ones in positive ways, without any pressure to have a good time:

Quality time with loved ones is one of the best things about the holidays, without any pressure to have a "perfect" holiday.

9. Say no to events or gatherings that will add stress to your life: If an event or gathering is

causing you stress, it is ok to say no.

10. Talk to a therapist if the holidays are causing you added stress: If the holidays are

adding a lot of stress, talking to a therapist can be helpful. SunServe offers no-cost mental healthcare for youth and adults. Do not hesitate to contact the intake team at (954) 764-5150, email info@sunserve.org, or visit www.sunserve.org/contact. If you feel stressed, anxious, or burnt out during the holiday season, it is important to take care of yourself. This means setting aside time just for you and your mental health. You can do this by taking a yoga class, walking in nature, reading a book, or spending time with your pets. Taking care of yourself will help you feel relaxed and enjoy the holiday season more! Thank you for reading this edition of "Ask Amos." If you would like to send me your question for future articles, please email it to AskAmos@SunServe.org. If we choose your question, you will receive a gift card to a local South Florida business. Until next time folks, stay happy, healthy, and well. HotspotsMagazine.com | 93

‘TIS THE SEASON

TO COMMENCE A

HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE! This year, why not put your own health and peace of mind at the top of your list of holiday gift giving? Commence the season by being good to yourself. You will see and feel the difference and others will celebrate the joyous transformation in you! Here's my list of top suggestions for 2023! Quit being a slave to poor eating habits. Implement and maintain a well-

rounded and efficient nutritional program that will support your lifestyle and activity level. Never skip breakfast and watch what you eat during the day! By regularly eating complex carbs and lean protein sources soon after you get up, you may be able to avoid overeating at lunch, supper and before you go to bed (which is the absolute worst time to snack!). Eating 4 or 5 smaller meals every two to three hours after breakfast boosts your

metabolism, helps you burn fat, and fuels your workouts. Simplify your lifestyle. Begin this holiday season by taking control and you'll find that 2023 will be less draining and stressful. Evaluate your schedule and weed out those unnecessary social obligations which make you miserable. As you map out your holiday social calendar, schedule your gym time as a crucial part of your days. Plan nutritious meals and bring food to work with you. Take low calorie veggie trays and other healthy dishes to holiday parties so that you'll have something to eat while others are carelessly imbibing. If you start eating healthy now, it will be easier to follow that course in the new year! If you have emotional baggage concerning family or other significant relationships, the yuletide season is sure to cause you heartache. Stress at work, family squabbles, increased expectations from friends and loved ones, holiday depression and loneliness can all be compounded at this time. Why not use these next few weeks to reach out and mend broken ties? Sometimes all it takes is you to make the first move to heal a

friendship or bring a dear one back into your circle of friends. Find a good friend to talk to, listen to relaxing music, get a massage, go to the gym, in short, implement healthy outlets for your inner angst. And if all this doesn't work, find a charity that can utilize your time and compassion and go to work for those who are less fortunate than you. Take advantage of the holidays to break bad habits and start new ones. Never drink and drive. If you are a designated driver, take your responsibilities seriously and keep an eye on the others in your charge. Uber is a wonderful option. Drinking can worsen the anxiety and depression you may already feel during this time, so why not give it up and replace it with other outlets. Take walks on the beach with a friend, enroll in a class, take up yoga, meet new people, foster new interests! May this holiday season be a time for peace, rediscovery, and growth. Wishing you as always, the happiest Christmas ever and one hell of a healthy New Year!

Disney’s Aladdin Makes 2 Stops in South Florida

Kravis Center: Dec 14-23 Arsht Center: Jan 3-8 By Scott Holland

110 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Aladdin, the hit musical based on the Academy Award-winning animated film, opened on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre to critical acclaim on March 20, 2014 and quickly established itself as one of the biggest new blockbusters in recent years, breaking 14 New Amsterdam Theatre house records. The North American tour is one of six replica productions around the world, joining those currently running on Broadway, in Tokyo, the Netherlands, Mexico City and Germany. Since the show's 2014 Broadway premiere, more than 14 million people have seen 10 productions around the world. Aladdin will make two stops in South Florida. The performances will begin in West Palm Beach at the Kravis Center on Wednesday, December 14 for a limited engagement of 10 days through Friday, December 23, and then at The Arsht Center in Miami for six days Jan 3-8. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, Aladdin features music by Tony Award and eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Sister Act), lyrics by two-time Oscar winner Howard Ashman (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid), three-time Tony Award and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice (Evita, Aida) and six-time Tony

Award nominee Chad Beguelin (The Prom, The Wedding Singer), with a book by Beguelin, and is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon). Aladdin is designed by seven-time Tonywinning scenic designer Bob Crowley, seven-time Tony-winning lighting designer Natasha Katz, two-time Tony-winning costume designer Gregg Barnes and sound designer Ken Travis. It was a pleasure to sit down with Ben Chavez (Omar) for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

At what age did you begin performing?

I started performing at the age of 3, and my start in the performing arts was in piano. At 4, I started singing acting and dancing lessons and from that moment on I never stopped performing.

What was your first professional gig?

Ben Chavez

The summer after my junior year at college I was a swing at a regional production of “Grease” in Massachusetts. That was my first exposure to the equity theater world. For those that don't know, being a swing is the hardest job in musical theater, and I learned in that job that I was not cut out for being a swing.

Other than this one, what has been your favorite role so far?

I always knew it was a passion, but I think right after I graduated from college I knew this would be it. I was fortunate enough to get an agent right away, and I was making money as a musician and as a stage

What's your fantasy role (a role you haven't played but want to)?

When did you know performing would be your career?

performer from the moment I graduated.

I played the role of Juan in “Alter Boys” in Cape Cod, and I loved the role and the show so much as the show is about a boy band and it has all that kind of NSYNC/Boy Band kind of music and choreography. It brought me back to my childhood and that boy band music is timeless.

I am a Jersey Boy, and I was brought up with the music of Frankie Valley, so its obvious what role I want! I envision my self-singing the song “I Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You” with that full band.

Is it intimidating or is there extra pressure being in such an iconic Disney show?

I think it's the opposite as its really an honor. I have done it upwards of 450 times now and every time the music starts, I get excited.

Is it hard being on the road all the time?

It has its ups and downs. Its more fun than anything else, and I love going form city to city. I also love getting to know the difference audiences from different cities.

How hard is it being away from your partner for so long, and how do you guys make it work?

Yes, the hardest part is being away from my partner. However, we both hold this opportunity in high regard as Aladdin is how we met. I was in Houston on tour, and I met him, and we fell in love instantly.

You were a part of the first touring company of Aladdin. What's the difference between the first one and this one?

I honestly think they are equally comparable and people who have seen both say they can't see the difference. People are dazzled by Disney's Aladdin.

How well do you and your castmates get along?

We get along very well, and I think that's in part because I am only one of three actors that came back from the original tour and they look up to me for insights, etc. This has given the job even more meaning for me.

Describe yourself in 3 words?

Energetic, compassionate, and silly (I am just a silly dude).

What do you do for fun?

I travel with my electric keyboard, so I like to just go into my hotel room and just jam out to Billy Joel or Elton John.

112 | HotspotsMagazine.com

What should our readers expect from this touring company of “Aladdin”?

What I think is so appealing about the show is that adults have a blast watching this production. People can expect to see a magical spectacle, and laugh their faces off. They have created an environment where grownups have a fun night out. Also, the singing and dancing are out of this world. We truly have some of the best talents in the industry. It's a telling of Aladdin unlike anything you have ever seen before. Tickets to the Palm Beach run are available at the Kravis Center Box Office and online at kravis.org. To charge tickets, call the Kravis Center Box Office at (561) 832.7469 during regular box office hours Monday through Friday from Noon to 5pm. 5 Tips for an Organized & StressFree

Holiday Shopping Season By Christina Giaquinto

The holiday shopping season is here, and that means it's now crunch time for gift giving. It is important to remember the true reason for the holidays, of course, but gift giving is a part of the tradition. It allows us to celebrate with each other, have fun, and show how much we care by giving our loved one's thoughtful gifts. Gift giving brings out the magic of the holidays, and we all can be reminded of the holiday spirit as we witness the happiness in a child's eye or grandmother's smile as they open their gifts! Whether you have a small group of people, or an extremely large family, it is important to stay organized with the shopping process, so you are all set and ready to go when the holiday officially arrives! In my experience as the Professional Organizer and Brand Ambassador of Modular Closets (DIY customizable closet units that organize any space in your home), I have discovered these helpful tips for an organized and stress-free holiday shopping experience

1.

Write a List of Ideas & Check It Twice!

Lists are the best way to stay organized this holiday season! This may sound like a simple task, but it will help you tremendously. So, grab a pen and paper, write down every person's name, and list out a bunch of ideas for what gifts you might get them. This gets your brain flowing with ideas. Trust me, the hardest part is figuring out what to get people, so if you write a list of possible options, you are off to a great start. Lists will always be helpful because they simplify your thoughts so you can get more accomplished! Even better, I recommend creating your gift list in a Google Spreadsheet or Google Document rather than keeping it in a Word Document or writing it down on a piece of paper. This is because you can easily download the Google Spreadsheet or Google Document app

on your smartphone and update your list while on the go! If you see a great gift idea in a store window while walking to work, get a suggestion from a colleague, or have a random burst of clarity on which present to get someone, you can then easily adjust your shopping list on your phone.

2.

What Is Your Budget?

Giving gifts can get out of hand when it comes to your wallet, so do not feel pressured to give more than you can. Set a strict budget for the holiday shopping season and stick to it. Trust me, when your credit card statement comes in January, you will be glad you did. It is important to set a definitive dollar amount to stay under, otherwise you will have no threshold you know you cannot surpass (which leads to overspending). To stay under budget, search for online promo codes and special discounts for social media followers that you can use when buying gifts.

3.

Set Your Online Shopping Deadline Now

The last thing you will want to do is rush to the mall several hours before a holiday soiree to try to find a gift for the party host! I strongly suggest ordering anything online by the first week of December. There will be some stores that guarantee holiday delivery later, but many stores require you to order by the first week of December. You do not want to take the chance of not getting your gift on time, and you do not want to have to pay extra shipping charges. Always check each item's website to see if they guarantee delivery, and what date you need to order by.

4.

Put Love Into Each Gift!

If you stay organized and start the holiday shopping process well before your deadline, you will have the luxury of being able to put love and thought into each gift you give! Too often, people scramble at the last minute to shop for the holidays — gifts they were planning to buy then go out of stock or won't be delivered on time, so they are left with having to try their luck at the local department store (and buying random gifts). By staying organized, you have the ability to truly put a lot of thought into each gift, so your loved ones know how much you care. You will have the time to get gifts monogrammed and more — it really does make a difference!

To Conclude

The holiday shopping season can be a hectic time for many, but you can keep all stress and anxiety at bay by preparing now. Have an organized and stress-free shopping experience by writing out your list now, setting a strict budget, and designating an online shopping deadline. Also, put extra love into each gift and make sure to wrap each present as you shop. Following these tips will help make this holiday shopping season the best yet! 5.

Wrap As You Shop

If you leave all the gift wrapping for the night before your holiday gathering, you will end up doing a stressful rush job. That said, wrap each gift as you buy it! By doing a little bit at a time, you will not be stressed toward the end of the month when you have a giant pile of presents to wrap. As soon as you buy a gift, come home, and set aside a couple of minutes to wrap it. If you love wrapping gifts (many people find this relaxing and joyful!), pick a specific day in the calendar to sit down, listen to some holiday music, and wrap away. By having a date in your planner, it takes away the stressfulness of days going by and having to wrap at the last minute. Also, have fun with the wrapping! Put love and happiness into each gift and set the intention that the person receiving it will be filled with joy. You can make each gift extra special by writing a thoughtful card about your favorite memories with the recipient, adding a festive bow, or taping a candy cane to the box. These small-but-impactful touches will really make your gift extra meaningful!

By Andreus Quinones

Dear Andreus, I had a fantastic Thanksgiving with my partner, family, and friends. However, there is a friend and his partner that comes every year for dinner, with a standing invitation. The problem is that the friend's partner is rude and has no boundaries. He is constantly bashing our friend (his partner), and they are usually the first to leave. When they leave, everyone talks about how uncomfortable he makes them. The issue for me, is that no one has addressed it. I want to say something, but I don't want to create a situation and then our friend doesn't visit anymore. Our friend isn't the issue, it is his partner. What should I do? We could really do without his presence at our holiday festivities. Sincerely, Wilfredo R.

Dear Wilfredo, The only thing to do is to confront the situation. Someone has to do it, otherwise, saddle up for a continuous ride. The behavior has not changed, because it has not been addressed. You teach people how to treat you by what you allow, and

what you enforce. Every year that goes by where this happens and no one says anything, it just gives permission for it to continue. If you are afraid of hurting your friend, talk to your friend first, then, if need be, talk to the partner. And if everyone is so uncomfortable, would it really be that bad if they don't come back? I hope this helps.

Dear Andreus, I really like someone, but he is freshly out of a relationship. We have been spending some time together and the more time I spend with him, the more I like him. I am just afraid of becoming a rebound. At the same time, I am afraid that if I wait too long, someone else might come along. Any advice on this? Sincerely, Joel P. Dear Joel, Tread very carefully. You are right – you don't want to be the rebound. When breakups take place, there should always be some time to reflect and to heal. Certainly, spend time, but don't push. If you are concerned about what to do, just be present and let him take the lead. If conversations come up about things going further, then talk it out and express your concerns about not wanting to become the rebound. If it is meant to be, it will happen organically.
