The Social event of the season presents the 51st Anniversary of the Miss Florida F.I. Pageantry System on Sunday and Monday, October 1st and 2nd in the beautiful “Crystal Ballroom” at The Venue/The Manor Fort Lauderdale (2345 Wilton Drive). On Sunday October 1 it will be three pageants in one night with Miss Florida F.I. At Large, Mr. Florida M.E. and Miss Florida F.I. Supreme pageants. Then on Monday October 2nd is The Miss Florida F.I. pageant. The pageantry system attracts some of

24 | HotspotsMagazine.com

the top named female impersonators, and Movie, TV, and Fashion stars from across the USofA and beyond.

In the past Miss Florida F.I. had celebrity judges including Boy George, Sylvester, and KC and Sunshine Band.

Many pageant systems have started since, they have followed the lead of Miss Florida F.I., but Miss Florida F.I. is still recognized as one of the top 5 national pageants.

Former winners have gone onto great careers in TV, movies, and coveted lead roles in shows and cabarets including Las Vegas and P-Town, and have traveled not only across the state of Florida but around the world.

The host hotel is, once again, the Gallery One Doubletree Suites by Hilton Hotel (2670 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale).

The Venue Fort Lauderdale will be serving a limited menu of delicious food, and of course amazing cocktails.

The owners who plan to uphold the vision of original owners Keith Landon and Rene Rodriguez include:

Alyson Thomas, a seasoned professional in the art form of female impersonation herself for over 40 years, brings professionalism, style, stability, and experience to the pageant. She is also known throughout the country as a leading promoter and supporter to many who have gone on to become natio nal title holders, and a coach to newcomers. Well respected by

everyone in the art form, a hands-on owner with an eye for detail, coupled with personality, hospitality and vision.

Scott Holland, whose knowledge and experience in the Florida market includes media and editorial experience, producer of events, judge to many pageantry systems including nationals and prelims to nationals, a pageant coordinator, public relations, professionalism, and a love for entertainment that cannot be touched.

Gary Santis, who has been involved with the pageant since 1990, is instrumental in keeping the history of the system alive. He brings decades of hands-on working knowledge of the system, and the experience that's makes Miss Florida F.I. rich in history, and memories. Gary continues to create amazing sets, outrageous productions, state of the art sound and lighting, encompassing a show and a night of entertainment not to be missed. Gary Santis is also the owner of Gary Santis events which has produced some of the biggest gay events south Florida has seen.

We sat down with former Miss Florida's who are celebrating anniversaries and we asked them the same questions. Here are their answers:

HotspotsMagazine.com | 25

For anyone who may not know who you are, tell us about yourself in a paragraph?

My name is Tiffany Arieagus and I was crowned Miss Florida, F.I. on My mother's birthday, May 16th, 1978. It was Ma Dear's first time seeing me perform or compete. We walked the runway together in front of a crowd of over 2200 people in the Grand Ballroom of the Fountainbeau Hotel on Miami Beach.

Why did you want to win Miss Florida?

I wanted to be Miss Florida because I was just beginning in professional entertainment when my show director was entering Miss Universe in Pensacola, Florida and I decided that I wanted to enter also. There I met Miss Florida, Emory Dubois, Keith Landon, owner of Miss Florida and Rene Rodriguez, Owner of Rene's in Tampa. By the way, Rene was my sponsor and mentor when I won Miss F lorida. Rene's still holds the honor of having the most Miss Florida's. I also met 20 of the most talented ladies from all over the country. I was number 21 out of 21 contestants which was very intimidating, but I won Talent and was Second Runner-up. I was invited to enter Miss Florida and I did.

Why is Miss Florida so important?

Miss Florida was the Social Event of the Year. People came from all over the world to vacation and commiserate with old friends, make new friends and to witness the Premier Pageant for Female Impersonators in the USA. Many National Titleholders such as Miss Continental USA, Miss America, and Miss USA, entered Miss Florida after their national reign. How has life changed for you since you won Miss Florida?

Winning the title helped to propel me into the national spotlight and have been blessed to be able to work around the world. Through Miss Florida Pageant, I received a call from Keith Landon to fly to Miami to film Miami Vice. I love entertaining but I love being involved in Social Service at Sunserve and the community.

What's the best thing that has happened to you in your career?

The best thing to happen in my career is the Gift of Life and the Blessing of being able to give back to Family, Friends, and Community the Love that they have given me. I hope to be around for many more years and do more to make a difference in the world. The greatest gift is to love and me loved. Share the love!

For anyone who may not know who you are, tell us about yourself in a paragraph?

My stage name is ESME' RUSSELL I was born in Tampa, Florida to Cuban parents, I didn't speak English until I was 5 years old . I've been doing Drag since 1976, I got my show business break in 1983 when I got hired at RENE's in Tampa and won Miss Florida in 1993 Why did you want to win Miss Florida?

I was always surrounded by Miss Florida's, my drag mothers, Dana Douglas and Tiffani Middlesexx, were both huge influences in my early days.

Why is Miss Florida so important?

Miss Florida is important because the title transforms you into a representative of the people and the LGBTQ+ community. Being Miss Florida especially today in 2023 is important because we need positive representation…Miss Florida is that and more! How has life changed for you since you won Miss Florida?

My life has changed a lot since winning. I'm definitely older and a lot wiser. In addition, I furthered my education and I now have an award winning career as the only openly transgender radio broadcaster in the United States. I'm extremely proud of that, WMNF 88.5. What's the best thing that has happened to you in your career?

Winning Miss Florida remains the highlight of my Drag career. Also the longevity of my career as I'm very proud and grateful for that!

performing as a drag entertainer for 30 years and I've won multiple local and national titles including Miss Florida FI 1998 and Miss Florida Supreme 2021. I am also a licensed cosmetologist and a fashion designer.

Why did you want to win Miss Florida?

The first pageant I ever attended was Miss Florida and I just loved it. I wanted to be a part of such a great legacy.

Why is Miss Florida so important?

Miss Florida is the second longest running pageant for female impersonators in this country. It represents the best of the best in our community, and our art. Just look at the list of former winners. It is truly iconic. How has life changed for you since you won Miss Florida?

Miss Florida opened so many doors for me in my career. I would not be the entertainer I am today without it.

What's the best thing that has happened to you in your career?

The best thing that happened to me in my career is that I've gotten to share my talent and love of entertainment with so many wonderful audiences, but especially with my mother, who was always my biggest supporter.

For anyone who may not know who you are, tell us about yourself in a paragraph?

I am Cuban American born in Miami and I reside in Fort Lauderdale. I've been

LIL NAS X: LONG LOVE MONTERO’ TAKING OVER TIFF

The Toronto International Film Festival is about to get an in-depth look at the world of Montero Hill, aka Lil Nas X, with the Grammy Award-winning rapper, singer and songwriter 's documentary, “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero.” Shot over the course of his first tour, the cameras follow him in a diaristic portrait as he navigates the business, the music, the fans, his family, and his place in the histor y of queer Black artists. Directed by Carlos López

( “Blindspotting,” “Raya and the Last Dragon”) and Zac Manuel (the Sundance Film Festival Jury Award Winner – Best NonFiction Film: “Time, Alone”). Since scoring the longestrunning No. 1 single in Billboard Hot 100 history in 2019 with “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X has come out as queer and lived it all out loud despite opposition from anti-LG BTQ forces in the culture and within the music industry. And with scores of

other pop artists working the documentary angle during the course of their career trajectories, this film is going to be a welcome addition to the canon of queer artists telling their own stories in their own way. We 're not sure where this film will land after the festival — theaters or streaming or both — but keep your eye s and ears open.

ARIANA DEBOSE HAS A LOT GOING ON

Welcome to your Ariana DeBose career achievement checklist. The Academy Award-winning queer powerhouse has, let's say, some (OK, a lot of) projects in the pipeline. Last year we reported that she'd be taking on an unspecified role in the upcoming Marvel film, “Kraven the Hunter,” but now we know that she's playing the priest Calypso, opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Kraven, and that the film is slated for a late summer 2024 theatrical bow. She's also still involved in the Blumhouse horror “House of Spoils,” opposite queer former “Euphoria” star Barbie

Ferreira (but still no drop date for that one). And while you're waiting, she'll voice the lead role of Princess Asha in the coming-soon Disney animated feature “Wish;” she costars in the Chris Pine-directed “Chinatown”-esque water heist mystery-comedy “Poolman” that's about to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival; she's in the sci-fi thriller “I.S.S.” from filmmaker Gabriela Cowperthwaite, which just got picked up for distribution by the indie Bleeker Street; and finally she's been cast opposite both Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa in the Matthew Vaughn-directed spy action thriller “Argylle.” Like we said, she's busy.

'SALTBURN' IS PROMISING A LITTLE CLASS WARFARE

Emerald Fennell, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter and director of the incendiary drama “Promising Young Woman,” is back to turn your Thanksgiving upside down with “Saltburn.” It's her second feature – where she's once again handling writing and directing – and it's the second time working with

producer Margot Robbie (third if you count Fennell's onscreen cameo as pregnant Midge in “Barbie”) on a mystery set at a very rich, very British “Downton Abbey”-style country home. Starring Academy Awardnominated Irish actor Barry Keoghan (heartbreaking in “The Banshees of Inisherin”) and “Euphoria” star Jacob Elordi (soon to be seen as Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola's film “Priscilla”), the story involves Keoghan's character becoming infatuated with Elordi, a charming young aristocrat, and subsequently winding up at his family's immense estate, Saltburn. Co-starring Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant and Carey Mulligan, we're told it's about desire and intrigue and the inscrutable behavior of the extremely wealthy. Taking its bow in October at the British Film Institute Film Festival, it opens Nov. 24 in the U.S., just in time

to see it with your own dysfunctional family.

LUKE MACFARLANE IS GOING TO KISS A MAN ON THE HALLMARK CHANNEL

Luke Macfarlane occupies a unique space in the entertainment world, one where his work in comedy projects like the Seth Rogen/Rose Byrne sitcom “Platonic” and the film “Bros” overlaps with his status as a go-to leading man in the world of Hallmark Channel romantic dramas for heterosexuals. And now the gay actor will get to take his “Bros” queer career cred and finally play a gay character in the Hallmark world. In “Notes of Autumn,” Macfarlane stars as the love interest of gay actor Peter Porte, himself a Hallmark regular who usually plays heterosexual. There are some straight people in the mix, too, of course, with Ashley Williams and Marcus Rosner (also members of the… should we call it the HCU at this point?) as the not-gay characters. It is also a 100% certainty that everyone will kiss their respective meant-to-be person at the end because there may now be LGBTQ+ representation on this greeting card planet but there is never going to be an unhappy ending. It all gets cozy and smoochy on Sept.16.

Romeo San Vicente cares enough to send a meaningful text.

Subway in the Sky: A New Dinning Experience Onboard a Blimp

Subway unveils the Subway in the Sky: a new dining experience onboard a blimp and a thrilling capstone to its latest Eat Fresh® Refresh launch. Taking to the skies on September 1, America can experience the heights Subway has reached since it began its transformation journey in 2021.

The vessel embodies The Beast, one of the new Deli Hero subs introduced in July that boasts a half pound of its new freshly sliced meat. Underneath the nearly 180-foot-long footlong, Subway transformed the gondola into a floating restaurant that accommodates up to six sandwich lovers per trip.

The Subway in the Sky will stop in cities across the U.S. as it soars through the sky in September, including Kansas City, Atlanta, Orlando and Miami.* Up to 40 Subway fans per day will enjoy a sandwich 'flight' of all four Deli Hero subs on board the blimp as they float 1,000 feet above the ground. To reserve a seat on the Subway in the Sky and to view detailed flight information, people can visit Register.SubwayInTheSky.com.

More Fun for Everyone

In addition to the Subway in the Sky rides, Subway is giving fans a chance go to Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas with a Subway in the Sky online game by visiting SubwayInTheSky.com or scanning a QR code in their local Subway restaurant.** People can take a daily spin on the blimp-themed slot machine that enters them in a sweepstakes for a chance to win a Super Bowl trip and unlocks a chance at special discounts on Deli Hero subs, like $5.99 footlongs or 15% off.

The Subway in the Sky reinforces a summer of exciting changes at all U.S. restaurants following the debut of freshly sliced meats and Deli Hero subs, a major expansion and new category in its Subway Series menu. Alongside 10 straight quarters of positive sales and international growth, the sky is no longer the limit for Subway.

Miami Area September 24 and 26 with registration opening on Sept 21 at 8am.

Grammy,

Emmy & Tony Award

Winner

Billy Porter to Headline Fundraiser for Stonewall National Museum Archives & Library

Robert Kesten, Executive Director of the Stonewall National Museum Archives & Library, today invited friends and supporters to a special Back to the Drive fundraiser headlined by Grammy, Emmy and two-time Tony Award winner Billy Porter. Filled with music, dancing, an open bar and nonstop food, this fun, feel-good and glittery event will be held at The Venue, 2345 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors, from 6 to 9pm on Thursday, September 21.

Tickets start at $200 per person and are available for purchase online at stonewallmuseum.org/snep-fundraiser/.

“All profit from this memorable event will support the Stonewall National Education

Program (SNEP), which ensures our most marginalized students have a safe and welcoming school environment, and that our history and culture are taught,” says Kesten. “When books and education are under threat in a growing number of states and regions across the USA and with Black and LGBTQIA+ history and culture under specific attack—including right here in Florida!—who is better to stand up and call it out than the always brilliant and ever brave Billy Porter.”

Sponsors for Back to the Drive with Billy Porter include AFT, Comcast, NEA, NSU Florida, OutClique, and The Windhover Foundation.

It's finally fall, which means only slightly cooler weather here in Florida and a little less sweat on the dancefloor.

Huge stars – including Nicki Minaj, Dolly Parton, Taylor Swift – are releasing new music that's sure to find its way onto your playlist as the perfect soundtrack to your autumn adventures.

Pink’ s OtherBraveAct:

The pop performer was brazen on her Summer Carnival Tour, but not just when she was in the air

I watched in gasping awe on Aug. 16 as Pink spun through the cool Detroit air, a soaring trapeze artist with a soaring voice to match. Take, for instance, the way she zipped to all corners of Comerica Park during her Summer Carnival Tour, her first-ever stadium show in Detroit, while somehow still singing her playfully cocky hit “So What” against the city's skyline. That acrobatic entrance alone definitely earned her the glass of wine and bubble bath she took shortly afterwards, according to her post-show Instagram post.

Twenty-plus years into an enduring career built on reinvention — something to admire, especially when you consider Pink's underdog status in the era of Britney and Christina — the singer-acrobat has become known for this circus act. It wasn't until her second album that she dropped the R&B persona that defined her 2000 debut “Can't Take Me Home” and went full on pop-rock. Though her path seemed clearer based on that album's success, its followup in 2003, “Try This,” was a commercial flop. During that time, when she first made being a misfit look cool, who could have predicted that it would be Pink selling out stadiums across the country in 2023? Not to mention, breaking a Comerica Park record — her sellout crowd of 45,000plus is now the biggest

reserved-seat attendance in the ballpark's 23year history, besting acts such as the Rolling Stones, Billy Joel and Elton John.

The first time I saw Pink was in Detroit at the State Theatre in 2002 for the Party Tour. There were no “holy shit, she's flying” moments; she was on foot the whole time. Still I knew she had something even more daring than a circus act to give this fickle world — that's real talk, no matter the consequences.

A few years later, in 2006, Pink released “Dear Mr. President,” a joint effort with the Indigo Girls. The song, where she called out those opposing same-sex marriage, was coincidentally released the same year the Chicks released “Not Ready to Make Nice,” a song the country trio directed at those who blackballed them after speaking their mind about then-President George W. Bush. Pink didn't let what happened to the Chicks stop her, however. In Pink's song, she blasted Bush with her signature no-bullshit approach. I was already paying close attention to her as a fan of her music and a teenage misfit myself, but it was that show of direct allyship, a gesture she made as a relatively new artist at what seemed like peak fame, that gave me newfound respect for her.

Years later, she's still peaking. And her platform has changed — it is, fortunately,

even bigger now. It is stadiums in Nashville, Cincinnati, Omaha — all places where anti-LGBTQ+ legislation has passed in the last year — and Detroit, where I realized no one seems to be talking about the other gusty part of her Summer Carnival Tour.

No, she's not swinging from the top of a stadium, but Laura Ann Carleton, a mother of nine, was fatally shot in California recently, allegedly killed by a 22-year-old because of the Pride flag she proudly put in her store window. In 2023, it's dangerous to even be an LGBTQ+ ally. So as I watched a sold-out crowd of 45,000 p eople, surely some of them Trump supporters and others who may be oblivious to the threat of simply being LGBTQ+ or even an ally right now, I was also seeing Pink the pro-queer advocate — someone who has not backed down from the fight for equality, even as she commands her most massive audiences yet.

At Comerica Park that night, any antiqueer fans had to confront the reality of pervasive homophobia and racism in our country, not to mention the overturning of Roe v. Wade and gun violence. The flying was a thrill to watch, but these days it seemingly takes even more guts to stand up for basic human rights. Pink did

some sloppy-drunk smalltown suburban moms and their husbands...”

just that several times during her show in Detroit, performing her politically charged protest song “Irrelevant,” written and released last year. On giant screens were protest images from #MeToo, Pride and Black Lives Matter marches, many of which appear in the song's music video. One said “Queer solidarity.” Many of the clips shown had rainbow flags, the same cheerful, defiant imagery that got Carleton killed.

I looked around plenty at the show to understand the crowd, and I couldn't come up with many examples of pop performers who appeal to such a broad spectrum of people like Pink does, from gay men to lesbians to some sloppy-drunk small-town suburban moms and their husbands — the same ones who don't think trans people should be able to pee wherever they choose. Well, not only did they get Pink's 2017 anthem “What About Us,” a message to Trump on how to be a president for all people, but those husbands also got Brandi Carlile, an out lesbian and multi-Grammy

winner who is also an unapologetically vocal LGBTQ+ activist.

I love this circus act because only Pink can do it, I have never seen anything like it in the pop music world, and it gets people who might not otherwise listen to how minority communities are hurting to perk up their ears. But also, Pink is onto something by marrying the wide appeal of a carnival act with her more polarizing political views — through the art of flying, she's made it impossible for anyone to look away.
