As I have mentioned almost every year, one of the best parts of doing the Annual Spa Edition (this is year #12) are the relationships the Hotspots staff have formed with the local spa owners, managers, and staff. Every year we look forward to seeing them and spending some quality time with their staff. In addition, we get to meet new people when new spas come on board. This year we welcome 2 new Spa's âme Spa & Wellness Collective and Rock Spa & Salon.

36 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Expertly trained staff and a menu of innovative, rejuvenating services set âme Spa & Wellness Collective apart from Miami's premier health and wellness facilities. Located at JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa, it spans three floors and features a fullservice spa and beauty salon, a 3,600square-foot fitness center, and the Holistic Rejuvenation Center.

When I entered the spa, I immediately felt a sense of relaxation, and I was greeted by the receptionist who checked me in. She then told me to make my way up a spiral staircase where the Men's concierge would meet with me and walk me through the spa amenities. I can't go on without commenting how regal the staircase was. I felt like Miss Universe, or a Queen or King should be descending them.

I was then given a tour of the men's locker room which features lockers, a large area of men's rooms, sinks with many products to use and a Steam Room and Salt Room, which were both amazing. After I changed into the bathrobe, I was then taken to the relaxation area where I was to wait until my Aesthetician would meet me.

A little while later, Giselle introduced herself and took me back to her room, where she would be administering the

Men's Essential Facial by Sothys (50 mins, $195). This facial was created to answer the needs of a man's skin; this energizing deep cleansing treatment combines volcanic rock to detoxify the skin and hyaluronic acid to replenish it. An exclusive and tailor-made solution for men addresses the concerns of the eye area. Vitamin and Hyaluronic enriched serum coupled with a relaxing eye massage using chilled porcelain spoons brings immediate relief to tired strained eyes and helps improve the appearance of dark circles.

The facial starts with a cleansing with steam, followed by exfoliation, then toner, and then a peel. While waiting for the peel to work Giselle gave me a scalp and neck massage. After the peel was taken off by hot towels (damn, I love hot towels on my face) extractions followed. After the extractions were done, she administered a sensitive skin mask with toner. While waiting for the mask to work its magic Giselle administered a hand massage. After the mask was taken off with hot towels (Did I mention how much I love hot towels? LOL), Giselle put a serum on my face and neck, which was followed by an eye cream which is pressed into your skin with cold small spoons. [Now I have been to a lot of spas

over the last 12 years of producing the spa issue, but the spoons stand out, as it's an amazing feeling; like nothing I have ever had before. Afterwards Giselle applied moisturizer while massaging my face. I must admit I was told Giselle is one of the best, so I had high expectations, and she far exceeded them.]

The Grand Resort and Spa

539 N. Birch Road

Fort Lauderdale

GrandResort.net

It was so nice to be back at the Grand Resort and Spa as last year the Grand Resort and Spa changed ownership and since they were in the middle of renovations, they could not participate in the Spa Edition. For those of you who have been loyal readers of the Spa edition you know my wifey, Paula, works there. Not to worry, her real husband knows all about me, and is cool with her having a gay husband.

I went to the Spa with Oscar, and we split the treatments. Oscar received the Deep Tissue massage and the Signature Body Scrub, and I went with wifey Paula to get the Spa Ultimate pedicure and the Age Defying Facial.

Oscar said the Spa's Custom Deep Tissue Massage ($140) was a deeply relaxing, deep tissue massage and was customized to his needs relieving tension, spasms, overall tightness, and stress. The massage table was heated, wrapped with sheepskin padding and covered with silky soft sheets, and he said it felt so relaxing. The therapist used a wide variety of orthopedic massage techniques targeting his problem areas with medium to deep pressure. For added relief soothing hot towels were also applied to neck, back and feet. He said Greg told him that the treatment and the specialized techniques not only reach deep muscle layers but also stimulates

After the facial I relaxed in the Salt room and then got dressed and made my way down the glorious staircase. There waiting for me was Liliana Grajales, who is the Director of Spa and Wellness, and she was incredibly gracious. What a great afternoon it was!

circulation relieving and relaxing body tensions.

Next, he had a Spa Signature Body in the spa's Wet Room. Their organic coconut oil and sugar scrub ($200) is complemented with a detoxifying seaweed gel application. This treatment begins with a cleansing of the body. Once clean, they exfoliate the skin with their coconut oil sugar scrub polishing the skin. Finally, a warm natural seaweed gel is applied and therapeutically massaged into the body. Oscar said he felt pampered with luxurious, smooth, soft hydrated skin and a rejuvenated body.

I started with the Spa's Ultimate Pedicure ($75) which of course takes place in a state-of-the-art massage chair and starts with a Relaxing therapeutic soak. Afterwards my nails were trimmed, filed and Paula took care of my cuticles.

An amazing way to treat yourself. We have designed the best most effective and relaxing treatments. A little bit of heaven. Afterwards she applied an

exfoliating and hydrating coconut scrub, which was removed with hot towels. The next step was a skin softening paraffin wax treatment and while the paraffin was working its magic Paula massaged my legs. The paraffin was also removed with hot towels and then she buffed my nails, so not only did my feet feel amazing they looked amazing.

Next Paula walked me back to the facial room and had me lay down on the bed as she was going to administer the Grands Age Defying Facial ($160). All their facials are customized to each guests need. This facial starts with a double cleanse which is followed by exfoliation with their micro dermabrasion machine. Directly following this Paula applied a Gold Jelly Mask, with Oxygen infusion. This helps to increase cell turnover which in turn boosts Collagen production. While the mask was doing it job Paula gave me a neck, shoulders, arm, and hand massage. The mask was taken off with a hot towel and then Paula applied moisturizer and sunscreen. The only bad part about this facial is that it ended.

Spa Cabanas

954-563-0336

Thecabanasguesthouse.com/mens-spa

When I arrived at the Spa Cabanas I was gr eeted by the sexiest voice in Fort Lauderdale, Manager Tony Banks. Spa Cabanas feels like home as they have been a part of the Spa Edition since we started 12 years ago.

The first service was their famous AntiAging Facial which would be administered by Manuel Echezuria. Manuel began by asking me what benefits I wanted from the facial and I stated my usual shpiel, that I wanted to

40 | HotspotsMagazine.com

look younger (who doesn't?). This facial was perfectly customized, to rebalance and reenergize my skin type for an anti-aging result. It actively increases skin moisture, calms irritations, and minimizes expression lines. After assessing my skin needs and making an evaluation, he proceeded to cleanse and exfoliate using the Spa's amazing line of PCA products, which they also carry and sell. Once the cleansing is finished, extractions are done, followed by a high frequency treatment used to minimize pores and even out the complexion tone. Finally, a mask was applied that was soothing and refreshing and made me feel quite relaxed. In addition, a relaxing anti-aging eye treatment helped reduce my puffiness and fine lines. 60 minutes $129

I was then introduced to Michael Arechavaleta who would be administering my 90 Min Deep tissue Massage with CBD Oil. This massage is described as “experiencing an intensive manipulation of superficial to very deep layers of muscles giving relief to recent or chronic muscular tension, pain, and stress. Special attention is also given to treating muscle fibers to further help release muscle and joint tension.”

1 Seminole Way • Hollywood 866-502-7529

Seminolehardrockhollywwod.com

Michael immediately discovered the tension I had in my neck and lower back and spent extra time in those areas. This procedure is all done with CBD oil and the leftovers Michael gave me to take home with me. I felt immediate relief from my problem areas following this treatment. The 90min Deep Tissue CBD massage is $165.

In addition to CBD infused massages, the Spa is now offering cupping services which detoxifies the body to a deeper level as well as relieves migraines and arthritis symptoms. They've also incorporated pressure gun therapy as an add on to all the massages offered.

When I was done with my treatments the owner Carlos Rodriguez greeted me. Carlos has now been the owner for 4 years and has really made Spa Cabanas a special place for wellness and pampering built on a strong sense of community and healing. Follow Spa Cabanas on Facebook and Instagram to see all the sexy pics he posts of his clients. I am warning you in advance they are so sexy it may be hard to concentrate on work afterwards…LOL!

The new Spa (it is now in the Guitar hotel) defines tranquility as guests seeking relaxation and rejuvenation finding a treasure

in this new 42,000 square-foot oasis. A full-service retreat, the spa menu offers a range of wellness and health-focused

offerings, a 3,200-square-foot fitness center and a 3,600-square-foot salon. Unique guest options include a private couples suite, a salon and seasonal product lines.

When I arrived off the Elevator, I immediately noticed about 20 feet in front of me the Spa check-in desk, which is expansive. I was greeted by a beautiful lady who took my name and showed me where to wait. Moments later the concierge introduced himself to me and took me to the men's locker room and gave me a tour and showed me all its amenities. He then told me when I was ready to wait in the relaxation area and my massage therapist would come and get me. After changing into my robe and slippers I arrived at the relaxation area and a few minutes later Judy introduced herself to me and escorted me out of the men's locker room and to the treatment rooms. However, when you leave the locker room area you pass through a co-ed area that can only be described as an OASIS. I was like a little kid in a candy store in this area seeing this expansive spa atrium featuring skylights, dipping pools, dry and wet lounges, private seating areas and romantic couple's suites. I almost didn't want to continue to the treatment room…I said almost…LOL!

I was super excited about getting the Thai Muscle Melt Massage (80 mins, $375 - an ancient therapy dating back to the XIV Century, once reserved for royalty and Thai warriors returning from battle) as it had been

12 years since I received a massage using Thai Poultices, and I remember how good they feel. Once in the treatment room, Judy explained the treatment, asked if I had any concerns or problem areas, and I told her she would find my problem area as it's obvious. She then stepped out for me to get under the sheets. Judy massaged me in sections first using her hands and then using the Thai Poultices, which are herbal sacks soaked in warm oil, and then firmly massaged into your body to relieve tension and melt away aches and pains. Using the healing properties of the Poultices on pressure points leaves your body and mind in such a relaxed state. Judy was an exceptionally gifted massage therapist and knew exactly how to use her hands and the Poultices to get maximum results. When the massage was finished, I asked her the question she had asked me earlier, which was “where is my tension?” and she answered “a little in your lower back but mostly in your shoulders”…and of course she hit in right on the head as I sit at a computer most days. She then gave me the Thai Poultices' and said that I should take a bath that night and drop them in the bath to continue getting the benefits of the herbs.

I definitely can't wait to go back to the Rock Spa at the Seminole Hardrock Hotel and Casino Hollywood!

J. Cohen’s Day Spa

9045 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale

754-206-4687

Jimmycohensdayspa.com

I went to J. Cohen's Day Spa a couple days after Pridefete, and since I knew how hard JB worked to make Pridefete successful once again, I brought him with me so he could get pampered also.

I took the first service, which was a massage. I was introduced to the therapist Rob Moura, who is Brazilian and has worked for the spa for 2 years. Rob went to school in Miami at the Educating Hands School of Massage, and he has been a massage therapist since 2008. He administers a mix of Swedish, Deep Tissue, and Reflexology and its unique to every client as he customizes it for everyone's needs ($99 for 60min or $135 for 90 minutes).

In the beginning of the massage, he asked me to breath in and it's a lovely smell, so I asked him what it was, and he said it's his personal formula which consists of Lemongrass, Lavender, Rosemarry, Cinnamon, and other special ingredients.

His hands are so talented, I asked him how he doesn't get exhausted or strain his body and he told me he works out a lot to keep him strong and that he puts most of the weight on his feet to not hurt himself.

Speaking of feet, Rob spends a good amount of time on mine, which is always nice. He also checked in with me a few times during the massage to see if the pressure was ok and if I was ok. I was enjoying it so much I could barely speak. When the massage

ended my body felt so good and relaxed. I would definitely go back to Rob for a massage. He works Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri and Sat.

It was then JB's time to get pampered and he was introduced to Victor Hernandez for his Anti-Aging Facial ($99 for 60 mins). Victor started out at J Cohen's as a receptionist, but loved the Spa environment so much, he went to school, and he now is a phlebotomist and medical esthetician. Victor started by cleansing JB's face, followed by a double exfoliation. He then applied a Papaya Enzyme Mask which removes the dead skin on the epidermis. This was followed by extractions, then a moisturizing Oat milk mask which calms the skin. While the mask is doing its work Victor massaged JB shoulders, arms, and neck. After removing the mask, he put on moisturizer that had an SPF and did a facial massage.

JB said the room was very calming and added to the wonderful relaxing experience.

When I asked Victor what he liked about being an Aesthetician, he said “I like to make people beautiful and feel like they can have the best version of their skin and make them confident.”

Afterwards JB was introduced to Alex Guio, a nail technician who was going to spoil him with a 60-minute Pedicure ($45).

46 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Alex has been working at the spa for just over a year, but he fits in beautifully. His demeanor is so relaxed and gentle; it is very calming.

JB was taken to the massage chair for his pedicure which he loved. Alex started by soaking JB's feet in warm water, clipped and filed his nails, soaked them again and then he removed his cuticles, filed the nails down

Lavish Manors Nail & Hair Spa

Lavishmanors.com

When I walked into Lavish Manors I was greeted by the handsome manager and told Kevin, who did my services two years ago, would once again be giving me my pedicure and manicure, and I was excited as Kevin is great! Kevin brought me back and told me the owner wanted me to experience the “Lavish Organic Pedicure.” With that pedicure you have a choice of six different scents to choose from, but I told Kevin to pick for me and he

some more, administers a scrub, then he takes the scrub off with a hot towel (which JB said was amazing). This was followed by buffing or a polish (up to the customer), and then he massaged lotion on to his legs.

Alex is very detail oriented when he performs the procedure, and you can tell he is a stickler for detail and enjoys his job. When I asked him what he enjoys the most about his job, he said: a satisfied customer.

J. Cohen's Day Spa also offers a skincare membership which is $399 a year and you get your own skincare menu and 20% off hair removal, and packages are built on the discounted price.

When I asked Jimmy about the future of the spa he said, “The future is bright and I am excited to be celebrating our 5 year anniversary this year.”

chose Lavender Citrus Candy Cube ($45). If Lavender isn't your thing this pedicure also can be done with Green Tea Lemon Grass Candy Cube, Chocolate, Mojito or assorted seasonal scents.

The Lavish Manors Pedicure massage chairs are heaven on earth, and once I was in the chair Kevin offered me wine, soda or water and began the Pedicure. The exfoliating and hydrating powers of

48 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Lavender have made the treatment a new favorite among nail pros. Created with a balance of fine salt, pure cane sugar, skin moisturizing butter and oils, and candy cubes it helps scrub away dead skin cells and leave behind soft and plump feet. To the best of my memory this is the order of the procedure, but when your feet feel this good, your memory kind of wanes. After soaking, Kevin trimmed my nails, and then filled them. He then added soap and scrubbed my feet with a brush. Kevin then put on oil and callus remover and let my feet soak again in the warm water. He then removed my cuticles, followed by putting on more callus remover and scrubbed it into my bad areas.

The next step was to put on the Lavender scrub and rubbed in the scrub with slices of

orange. After washing off the scrub, and then applying Hot towels (who doesn't love hot towels?) he put on oil and lotion and massaged them onto my feet and calves. Afterwards he did some final cuticle work and buffed my nails to a beautiful shine (I am not a polish girl).

When the Pedicure was over, it was time for the next procedure, a classic manicure ($20), that included nail trimming, shaping, cuticle detailing and a lotion massage. Needless to say, I left Lavish feeling like a movie star!

Lavish Manors offers add on to all Mani and Pedi services, and they are: Hot Stones $10; Paraffin $10; Combo Hot Stones & Paraffin $18; Additional reflexology 10/20 minutes $14/$26.

I always love pulling up to the Carillon as their entrance is so beautiful it fools me into thinking I am rich for a brief moment…LOL…your car is escorted away by the valet, which is complimentary if you are having spa treatment. You then head up the elevator to the Spa.

The Carillon Spa is one of the most comprehensive spas I have ever been to, offering everything from cupping to cryotherapy, and infrared saunas. Carillon Miami Wellness Resort brings a unique and comprehensive mixture of Western, Ea stern,

Alternative, and Aesthetic medicine for custom treatment plans and impactful results.

In addition to what most people consider normal “Spa Treatments” The Carillon Spa also offers touchless services (which I experienced last year) and Hypnotherapy and regenerative services which was on the agenda for that day.

When I arrived at the Spa's front reception Joanne from Flights of Minds, Hypnosis was waiting for me and escorted me downstairs to her office. Joanne

With her mastery in Hypnotherapy and deep understanding of the human psyche, she skillfully facilitates the release of blockages, unwanted behaviors, and emotional pain, paving the way for personal growth and happiness.

Joanne is also a Master Practitioner in Neurolinguistic Programming, Certified Recovery Peer Specialist and Life Coach.

When I sat down on the couch in Joanne's office, she proceeded to tell me about herself and the services she offers. She has been at the Carillon for only 3 months but has been practicing Hypnotherapy for over 10 years and has worked extensively in Drug and Alcohol Addiction but wanted to make her services more accessible to all. She believes that she gets her clients to take back control and she says we have everything within us, but sometimes we are unable to access what we need. In other words, she helps people back to their authentic self. Joanne also

mentioned to me that studies conducted by the CDC laid the foundation for understanding how traumatic childhood events can have detrimental effects on adult health, potentially leading to illness and premature mortality. The process of healing can pave the way for healthier lifestyle choices and more positive thought patterns. She truly believes that she is not hypnotizing her clients, but rather un-hypnotizing them, helping them take back control and activating selfhealing.

After telling me all about herself and how she helps people, she asked me many questions about myself, which I was happy to answer. I was happy to answer them because Joanne has a calming, maternal, non-judgmental, likeability about her. I was at ease telling a stranger, things I probably wouldn't be comfortable sharing with friends. She then asked me if I was comfortable enough to try

Hypnotherapy, and believe it or not, cynical me said yes. I then laid down on the couch, closed my eyes, listened to her cues, and went to a place that I can only describe as internal and calm. I saw some things that I blocked because I didn't want to deal with them, and some lightbulbs went off. Coming out of Hypnosis, I felt a sense of peace. Joanne's services and special offers can be found on the Carillon website under Spa services “Hypnotherapy” and more information on her website flightofminds.com.

Joanne then walked me over to Dr. Sarah Doyle of HealWell Regenerative Institute. Dr. Sarah adopts a comprehensive approach to addressing pain and orthopedic injuries, focusing on holistic healing both inside and out. She understands that various factors can contribute to joint or nerve pain, impeding the recovery process, including biomechanical issues, nutritional imbalances, and underlying stealth infections like mold, parasites, or Lyme disease. Dr. Doyle, a certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, specializes in treating orthopedic injuries, sports-related ailments, vertigo, balance concerns, pelvic floor dysfunction, spinal pathologies, sleep issues, and anxiety.

Dr Sarah, like Joanne, is extremely likeable and a healer at heart…not a businessperson. She truly wants to help as many people as she possibly can. At HealWell they use the latest technology from beginning to end. The initial consultation is $300 and includes an evaluation and a 90-minute treatment. I was taken through the process which is simple as

you sign up on your phone and make an appointment. When you get there, after a verbal consultation with Dr. Sarah, where she will review your medical and surgical history, and deep dive into your chief complaint, find the root cause of your issue and develop a care plan for you. Then you step on the Body Composition scanner which literally scans your entire body and tells you everything (seriously I am not eating for a week…LOL).

Afterwards, since I had expressed how bad my knees are we went back to the room where the Doctor has the Indiba 448 KHz Radio Frequency machine. This machine has worked miracles in short amounts of time. She then spent about 15 minutes on each knee and my knees felt amazing.

Spa Aftercare

Your self-care journey is not over once you leave the spa. In fact, it has just begun!

After your luxurious pampering services–whether it be a massage, facial, mani or pedi– appointment has ended, there are still some important things you must do to help your body recover and maintain its new glow.

Hotspots Magazine offers these simple ways to keep that spa vibe going.

After a Massage…

• Hydrate—The most important thing you need to do after your dreamy massage is to drink water. Massages are dehydrating, so you need to replenish your body with a steady flow of liquids. Of course, this does not include alcohol or caffeinated

beverages, which will only dehydrate you further. Staying hydrated will also help you avoid any soreness you encounter.

• Ice it up—Sometimes a good deep tissue massage can leave you a little sore, whether you are hydrated or not. This is where a cold compress can really make a difference and soothe those tender, achy spots. A frosty icepack is just the thing to put on sore, but happy muscles. You'll be feeling better in no time.

• Relax—Keep t hat chill vibe going by taking things slowly, listening to calm music and generally relaxing yourself. Find a comfortable spot at home and push all of your worries away. It's a good feeling and you'll want to keep it as long as you can so try to avoid anything

stressful, including thoughts of work, chores and especially anything involving dramatic friends and family.

After A Facial. . .

• Hands off!—Try not to touch your face after a facial. Your pores have just been cleaned and your skin is vulnerable. Keep your mangey paws off that pristine puss.

• Be patient—After a good facial, your skin might look worse at first because it has been expertly cleaned out and things are coming to the surface. This is all part of the treatment so do not stress. It will all be worth it and you and your currently raw, post-facial mug are well on the way to glowy flawlessness. Just give it some time.

• Use sunscreen—Right after a facial, your skin can be more vulnerable to the sun. Make sure to protect your punim with a 30+ SPF sunscreen.

Avoid Harsh Products

In the 1950s, Madge the Manicurist recommended Palmolive to her clients to keep their manis safe while doing the dishes. Things change but the sentiment remains – harsh chemicals are terrible for hands and nails. Invest in more natural, less harsh products. Most beauty shops and drug stores should stock an array of natural soaps and other related products.

After a Mani/Pedi

• Keep it soft—They used the cheesegrater on your heels and the extra strength moisturizer on your hands to smooth your callouses – what next? If you want to keep that smoothness going, invest in a super emollient hand and foot cream. However, a nail expert once told me that slathering your feet at night with Vick's Vapor Rub and then sleeping with socks will also do the trick. Several companies make special gloves and socks to protect your extremities as well.

Keep Those Cuticles Cute

Wasn't it nice when your manicurist used a lovely-scented oil on your cuticles? You can– and should– do the same at home. Keep them smooth with a nail oil of your choice. Daily use will definitely do wonders to keep your nails hydrated and improve the smoothness of the skin around them.

Ask The Experts

And the biggest advice to take care of yourself after these pretty procedures – is to ask the experts. Before you leave your massage, facial, manicure or pedicure, don't be afraid to ask your spa technician for advice on how you should take care of yourself afterwards. Typically, they will tell you before you even ask.

Beginners Guide to Meditation

Mind-body practices that have been around for centuries are becoming more modern day, accessible tools to elicit greater health and harmony in life. Current research shows the numerous benefits of consistent mindful meditation practices, such as increasing emotional intelligence, the body's resilience to stress and improving positive states of mind. Our physical health, productivity and longevity are di rectly affected by our mental and emotional well-being.

Adora Winquist, founder of The Soul Institute Co, meditation and vibrational medicine expert, and author of Detox

Nourish Activate: Plant & Vibrational Medicine for Energy, Mood and Love, shares her beginners guide to meditation.

1. Create a space that feels warm and inviting. A clear and clutter-free environment allows the mind to settle and the energy to flow freely. Having a sanctuary space for your sacred intentional practices will become a haven for you on the days when the hectic pace of the world can seem overwhelming.

2. Enjoy a cup of rose petal or lavender tea. Specific herbal teas can nourish the body, calm the nervous system and sooth the spirit. These two are wonderfully relaxing

and heart nurturing, helping to create the conditions conducive to meditation.

3. Incorporate your favorite heart centering essential oils like Geranium, Ylang Ylang or Eucalyptus by inhaling one drop of the essential oil from the palm of your hand or cotton ball for 30 seconds while you focus on The Love Code Breath Technique. Pure essential oils are the most potent form of plant medicine and offer a profound and immediate effect when used via inhalation. The aromatic molecules imprint their vibration and medicine through our olfactory senses, through the brain into our cellular consciousness and the totality of our beings. When feeling overwhelmed, anxious, down, or disconnected, we can create new habit patterns of using essential oils via inhalation to uplift our emotions and re-pattern our neural pathways for a healthier way of being, feeling and living.

4. The Love Code Breath Technique: Release Forgiveness Gratitude In each moment we can let go over the thoughts, feelings, actions, and activities that we know do not serve our highest health and well-being. When you start to feel triggered, upset or frustrated with yourself or others, center yourself like a tree rooted in the earth and take a deep breath into your heart, on the exhalation invite the intention to let go and release that emotion or thought. Then take a deep breath in forgiveness. It need not be directed at one person, yet more of a healing balm for our hearts. Then close with a breath of gratitude, a sense of appreciation for yourself and your commitment to grow, heal and elevate to the best, most loving version of yourself.

5. Cultivate this practice consistently: You don't have to spend a whole hour meditating to Zen out. Starting with 5 minutes a day consistently is a great way to cultivate a commitment to yourself that is simple to keep. Over committing can create a sense of overwhelm ness that is counterproductive. Once you feel like you have a solid 5-minute daily practice, increase by a few minutes each time as long as it feels easeful. Work up to 20 minutes a day. Journal your experience and benefits for the first 21 days to see the bright and beautiful new shifts in how you

feel inside and how these greater feelings of goodness and gratitude ripple out around you.

About Adora Winquist: Adora Winquist is the founder of The Soul Institute for Quantum Living. She is an expert in the fields of essential oils and vibrational medicine, and a visionary in the nascent arena of Quantum Alchemy. Adora is the co-author of “Detox Nourish Activate: Plant & Vibrational Medicine for Energy, Mood, and Love” (named one of the Most Notable Books of 2021 by Spy magazine). Adora intertwines the divine knowledge and ancient wisdom of esoteric philosophy, psycho-spiritual dynamics, essential oils, and energy medicine through her twenty-five-plus years as a facilitator, educator, formulator, and entrepreneur.

Should I Get A Massage Before or After Exercising? Fitness Experts Reveal

A sports massage is a great way to release tension that builds up in your muscles over time, and it can also reduce any stress and help you feel more relaxed.

One of the most common questions people have is whether a massage is more beneficial to have before or after exercising. Whilst it generally depends on your specific needs, there are some benefits to each option.

A spokesperson for Total Shape, says:

“Sports massages do not only have significant benefits for those who work their muscles regularly, but also for those who

experience tension, stress, or have injuries.

“Often people ask whether it is best to have a sports massage before or after a workout. There are benefits and drawbacks for both, such as boosting performance, encouraging recovery and increasing hypertrophy.

“Getting a massage before or after a workout is equally important, and ultimately it depends on the results you want to achieve.”

Now, the fitness experts at Total Shape share the pros and cons of having a sports massage before and after a workout.

Spa Edition
102 | HotspotsMagazine.com

BENEFITS OF A MASSAGE PRE-WORKOUT

1. Helps to enhance your mood

A pre-workout massage can stimulate the production of feel-good hormones by easing muscle stress and tension. Endorphin, dopamine, and serotonin are some examples of hormones and neurotransmitters that help with overall wellbeing, focus, and motivation to work out.

2. Helps increase energy and strength

A pre-workout massage can also help increase blood flow throughout the body, giving your muscles more energy and strength. Consequently, you can lift heavier weights, train for more extended periods, and achieve your fitness goals faster.

3. Helps enhance movement and flexibility

A pre-workout massage can help loosen tight muscles around the joints. This makes it easier for the joints to move freely within their normal range. By moving better and being more flexible, you can lower the chance of getting injured while working out.

BENEFITS OF A POST-WORKOUT MASSAGE

1. Hasten post-workout recovery

Post-workout massages can help your muscles heal and recover from micro-tears caused by heavy workouts by increasing blood circulation. This means that oxygen and micronutrients are delivered quickly to your tissue fibers, assisting in their repair, and making you feel better.

2. Decrease muscle soreness

Massage can help relieve sore muscles after a strenuous workout because applying moderate pressure to muscles forces blood to other parts of the body. This brings more oxygen and nutrients to the area, which helps get rid of stiffness faster and reduce inflammation.

3. Reduces mind and body stress

ARE THERE ANY DRAWBACKS?

• There might be some drawbacks to getting a sports massage if they are done by an untrained therapist.

• Those might include increased tiredness, muscle pain, and headaches.

• Going to a regular massage therapist who isn't trained in sports rub may result in a longer, more intense muscle kneading than you need, leaving your muscles tired and in pain.

• Research has also shown that using too much pressure during a massage can cause muscle soreness, which can lead to headaches and a lack of motivation to train.

A massage session after a workout, like a pre-exercise massage, can help your mind and body feel less stressed by giving you complete relaxation. This helps raise your levels of feel-good hormones, making you feel much better after a long, tough workout.

Michelle Buteau’s Full Heart, Tight Jeans Tour

Friday, Oct. 6th at Broward Center, 2nd Show Added!

Michelle Buteau brings her "Full Heart, Tight Jeans" tour to the Amaturo Theater on Friday, October 6 at 8pm (which after interview was done sold out and they recently added a 10:30pm second show). She recently returned to Netflix as the creator/writer/star of the series Survival of the Thickest, inspired by her autobiographical book of essays of the same name.

Michelle is also the host of two popular reality competition shows: "The Circle" and "Barbecue Showdown" on Netflix. Other film and TV credits include Marry Me, First Wives Club, Always Be My Maybe, Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens, Russian Doll, and Someone Great. She is also the Modern Manners columnist for Real Simple and hosts the popular podcast Adulting. Michelle's one-hour comedy special "Welcome To Buteaupia" is streaming on Netflix and won the Critic's Choice Award for Best Comedy Special.

112 | HotspotsMagazine.com

It was a pleasure to sit down with Michelle a copy weeks before her appearance for this exclusive Hotspots interview.

Were you always a performer, even as a child, or when did you catch the bug?

OMG, I think every kid likes to perform, because it's just fun and you are playing pretend. In High School I recorded music videos on a VHS tape and memorized them. That's where performing really began. I honestly didn't even know that performing could be a real job.

What was your first paid gig, and how much did you get paid?

Oh, girl I don't remember, that's crazy. At what point did you realize entertaining would be your career?

I guess when I started doing it full time and paying my bills. I started doing the college circuit and I thought, this is amazing. What do you like better, stand-up or acting? That is not an ok question....LOL!! It's all under art and I love it all!

No, I really didn't. I know I love the show and I love to binge watch stuff, but I didn't realize it would get this big. It's one of my most favorite gigs as I feel like I get to know people instead of the other way around. A lot of the contestants have become part of my family and come to my shows, etc.

How did Survival of the Thickest happen, and how was it to work with Garcelle Beauvais?

OMG, I don't think I am allowed to talk about it because of the strike. But I hope we can move forward with the contracts as these writers, etc. need to move forward and be able to pay their bills.

Describe yourself in 3 words?

Energetic, empathetic, and sassy-as-f*ck! What do you do for fun?

I work out; I love full body training. I especially love working out with other comedians. I also love hanging out with my kids and seeing them do stuff like gymnastics, etc. In addition, I love going to see shows, Broadway, off-Broadway, etc. I would be lying if I didn't say I like a little massage…rub that shoulder bitch I am tired.

Is there something we would be surprised to know about you?

I used to be an editor for deco drive when I was in college, I went to FIU. What should our readers expect from your new stand-up Full Heart, Tight Jeans Tour?

I am bitch so I am going to be entertaining and I am funny as f*ck. Also, I am a real person, so this is real thoughts and life stories. It's everything you want from a festival, but you get to sit down and laugh. Is there something I didn't ask you that you want to talk about?

How did you get the gig as host of the Circle?

I think I’ve gotten every amazing gig from the body of work I have. While Netflix was looking for a host, they saw how sassy, earnest and empathetic I was, and I got the gig. Did you have any idea it would get this popular?

No girl you asked everything and them some. Oh yeah, please tell your readers to listen to my podcast, Adulting. We have 3 or 4 seasons under our belt. It's a beautiful one-hour ride of real-life convo and emotions, etc. It's a big old barrel of fun, and it's one of those things you can binge or listen to 3 or 4 times.

To purchase tickets to Michelle Buteau's Full Heart, Tight Jeans Tour, which start at only $35, go to: Browardcenter.org

A QUEER SLEUTH FOR 'THE END OF THE WORLD'

Emma Corrin, the queer nonbinary actor who starred as Princess Diana in “The Crown,” is heading to FX/Hulu to solve “A Murder at the End of the World.” The team behind cult series “The OA,” Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, created this limited mystery series, and Corrin stars as a young amateur detective (a profession currently trending hard in the media thanks to

the success of “Only Murders in the Building” and “Poker Face”) who has to catch a killer on the loose at a remote retreat before the murderer strikes again. Rounding out the cast are some familiar faces/suspects: Clive Owen, “Twin Peaks” alum Joan Chen, “Triangle of Sadness” co-star Harris Dickinson, young gay playwright Ryan J.

Haddad and queer Tony Award nominee Raul

Esparza. The episodes arrive on Hulu during sweater weather — November 14, specifically — which technically makes it a cozy mystery.

SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF' TAKES TO NETFLIX

The 2010 queer-inclusive comedy “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World,” about a young man who has to fight his new girlfriend's exes as though it were a giant video game, was so wildly energetic that mainstream audiences didn't quite know how to deal with it. It took a while for the film to find its ever-growing cult audience, but find that audience it did, and now Netflix has taken the story and adapted it into an anime

series, “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” with the original cast — Michael Cera, Aubrey Plaza and Kieran Culkin (as Scott' s hilarious gay roommate) — returning to provide their characters 'voices. The film was originally based on graphic novels, so this is something of a full circle move. You'll get to binge the whole thing over Thanksgiving when the series drops on Nov. 17th.

JOSIE TOTAH HUNTS FOR A TITLE IN 'THE BUCCANEERS'

Because we're all still missing the goofy fantasy of “Downton Abbey,” we know you 're watching “The Gilded Age.” It's simultaneously trashy and luxurious and queer and boring — no better combination. But what if there was another notexactly-“Bridgerton” series about more or less the same thing — young American debutantes sailing to England to find young men with titles and grand houses and empty bank accounts? Of course, you'll watch that one, too. Well, it's called “The

Buccaneers,” it's based on the unfinished novel by Edith Wharton, and it stars

“Mad Men” queen

Christina Hendricks, and a slew of young up-andcomers like Kristine

Froseth (“Looking for Alaska”), Josh Dylan

(“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”), Kate Winslet' s daughter Mia Threapleton (TV' s “Dangerous Liaisons”) and, best of all, the hilariously talented trans actress Josie Totah ("Saved by The Bell”) as one of the gold-digging girls on the make for status and mansions.

Watch all the single ladies get what they want Nov. 8 on Apple TV+.

‘RAP

SH!T' DOUBLES DOWN

“Rap Sh!t,” the hilarious hiphop comedy series from “Insecure” creator/star Issa Rae, is returning for another round. Season one focused on Miami rappers The City Girls (real-life rapper KaMillion and non-binary actor Aida Osman) and the personal and professional trials of newfound viral music fame they experience in the wake of their first single' s success. Their story continues as season two arrives, featuring the return of “Daily Show” alum Jaboukie YoungWhite in a recurring role. (For those joining his career already in progress, White is the queer comic actor and musician that made Disney history by voicing the first openly gay protagonist in one of their animated features, 2022' s “Strange World.”). You've got a little time to catch up on season one, before the “Sh!t” hits Max on Nov. 9.
