The 27th Annual Miami Task Force Gala

Saturday, October 14th Miami Beach Convention Center

In its milestone 50th anniversary year, The National LGBTQ Task Force is hosting its 27th annual Gala in South Florida. The Gala's theme, Forever Strong, Unapologetically Queer, speaks to the organization's determination in uplifting the LGBTQ community and creating spaces for queer people to be their full, authentic selves. The night will feature a red-carpet entrance and coc ktail reception, an expansive highend silent auction, a formal dinner, live entertainment, an awards ceremony over dessert, and an afterparty with dancing and a live DJ. Red carpet is at 6pm with the gala beginning at 6:30pm, and the after glow party starting at 10pm.

Actress, model, and activist Dominique Jackson, best known for her lead role as Elektra in the hit show Pose on FX, will receive the 2023 National Leadership Award, an honor awarded

each year to an advocate who has helped further the Task Force's mission.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Dominique for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

Were you always an entertainer even as a kid, or when did it start?

I have always been an entertainer from the time I knew myself. My family was into music, but I was always told I count carry a tune, so my love was dance. I always danced and I always loved the stage but didn't think the stage would be receptive of me. At what point did you realize you were Transgender?

The thing is I had to fit into a category. I was always this girl. I looked at other people and they were confused. Later on, I looked at body parts and realized maybe they were right, and I thought that I could never possible be the woman I am now. I was always a girl.

How did your family take it?

Of course, I was scolded and told I was incorrect, but survival kicks in and it was a matter of me accepting who I was on the inside and knowing that eventually I would find that person one day. Once I finally presented who I am, is when they really took it hard, and I suffered for that as I went through homelessness and a lot of violent situations. It's hard to accept the truth when

the truth is hard to accept as the norm. When did you move to the US?

When I was 15 years old.

How did modeling start for you, and what was the best runway/show you modeled for?

My favorite show is always going to be Mugler as that is my everything. I started with Brooklyn fashion week and my friends told me to never give up even with all the obstacles. They said I was destined to be a model. Eventually the doors opened for me. It was nice and validating to have people believe in me. After all this is when Mugler called, and I even modeled for Valentino. I am honored when any Couture designer calls and books me, and I am forever grateful.

HotspotsMagazine.com | 51

How special it is to you to receive the 2023 National Leadership Award, at the Task Force Gala?

That is something that I am still in shock about because I never really understand getting an award for something we are supposed to do. It is our duty to work and help our community by standing up. So, it's odd to be recognized for this. But then I realized that being honored means my sisters are being acknowledged. It is for everyone who taught me how to survive and for my sisters who are no longer with us. And I am very humbled by it. What does the future hold for you?

I just made it into Hollywood and then there was a pandemic and now we are on strike so hopefully something will be great soon. I hope for a future where I can be working alongside many more of my sisters and brothers telling our stories and being supported.

Constance Collins, the Founder and President of the Sundari Foundation, Inc. (also known as the Lotus House Women's Shelter), will be honored with the 2023 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award for their efforts in establishing and supporting a network of women's shelters and programs nationwide.

Emcees of the evening include iconic drag performer Latrice Royale, crowned "Miss Congeniality" of RuPaul's Drag Race: Season 4 and award-winning actor, singer, and filmmaker Dyllón Burnside, best known for his role as Ricky in the FX series Pose.

I asked Latrice her thoughts about hosting the Task Force Gala and she said: “I am so thrilled to be asked to return as a host of the National Task Force Gala. This is an organization that has been fighting for our rights for years, and we need them more now than ever. Like everyone, I am just one person. But I am determined to use my voice as loudly as possible to remind everyone We're HERE and not going ANYWHERE. I hope everyone can join us at the gala, and make sure to bring your purses!!!”

Fall Travel: How To Avoid Jet Lag

We all look forward to our travel excursions, but along with all the fun, relaxation and sightseeing some less pleasant things may hinder the overall experience – like jet lag.

Jet lag is a common occurrence that affects most travelers, especially those crossing multiple time zones. It disturbs the body's internal clock and can wreak havoc on your system just when you're planning to make the best of your travel experience. Its main symptom is the disruption of your sleep patterns, leading to sleepiness during the day

Fall Fashion/Travel Edition 66 | HotspotsMagazine.com

and an inability to fall asleep at your normal time of night. It can also lead to headaches and cause irregularities in your bowel movements – which can most definitely put a damper on the excitement of a much needed getaway).

Luckily, there are some steps that can be taken to lessen the effects of jet lag. Hotspots offers these 6 tips:

Adjust your schedule beforehand

4 Light exposure

Light plays a major role in regulating your body's internal clock. Be cool and grab your shades. Wear them at the airport during the nighttime hours in your home city. This will trick your mind and body to think it's dark out and possibly allow you to catch some Zzzs on the flight, if necessary.

One of the best ways to mitigate the symptoms of jet lag is to modify your schedule before you leave. By moving your sleep pattern to one that lines up with the time zone of your destination, your mind and body will already be prepared and ready to take on the day once you arrive. It's also important to ensure you have proper rest ahead of a flight; lack of sleep will only exacerbate the situation.

Plan a stop over

2

Stay hydrated

5

Planning a stopover, especially on a very long flight, may help you adjust and give your body a chance to acclimate to the situation. A pit stop will give you a chance to relieve stress and move around a bit after being confined to an uncomfortable seat. If you choose to nap, keep it brief; too much sleep on or in between flights will only contribute to je t lag.

Go early

1 3

How many times have you found yourself fatigued and out of breath and noticed your mouth is completely dry? The importance of drinking water cannot be overestimated. Dehydration will only make the effects of jet lag worse. Be sure to keep hydrated and eat small healthy meals during your flights.

Arrival plans

Plan a stimulating but low effort activity –especially if you are arriving in the morning at your destination. This way you will be able to stay awake longer. This writer, for example, flew to Paris and arrived in the morning, so she planned to drop off her bags and go straight to the Eiffel Tower. The glorious sight woke her up and all of the stairs kept her engaged and active.

6

If you have an important event to attend upon your arrival it may be beneficial to plan an earlier flight or perhaps land a day before to get your bearings in order. This will allow you to get some rest and deal with any pesky headaches before you make that presentation or embark on a thrilling adventure. HotspotsMagazine.com | 67

Fall Travel: Cool Devices to help You Travel In Style

Travel can be stressful, but with a few extra steps, it can be downright pleasurable. Before you jump on that plane consider these gadgets to help you enjoy the flight and even conserve space in your overstuffed suitcases.

Fall Fashion/Travel Edition

Packable Neck Pillow

This travel neck pillow is the perfect travel accoutrement. First off, if you're embarking on an extended journey or that dreaded red eye, getting some precious sleep is a necessity. So, bringing a neck pillow is a no-brainer. But this one allows you to save on a carry-on bag fee because you can stuff it with extra clothes. You can also use it to keep important things with you in case of a flight delay or if your luggage gets lost.

Travel cup holder

You find yourself pulling your spinner suitcase around the airport as they keep changing your gate, then, with a drink in hand, you suddenly receive a call or text. Instead of stopping to set down what you're holding, use this suitcase cup holder to free your hands. It holds two drinks and has extra pockets so you can pack more. It simply attaches to the metal extension handle of your rolling luggage.

J-Pillow

If comfort is your main concern, this pillow is good for long flights when you really need your beauty rest. It supports your neck and keeps your head elevated in a good position. Step off the plane with less aches and pains after a long flight.

HotspotsMagazine.com | 81

Airplane Pockets

Once you're crammed like a sardine into your seat, the first thing you do is try to find a place to store all of your items during the flight. This tray table cover can be easily attached and provides pockets for your drinks, gadgets, snacks, or books. It also helps with cleanliness, seeing as we don't know if those tray tables are always wiped down in between takeoffs. Bring your computer, tablet, books, earphones and more on board and keep all your travel accessories organized for maximum comfortability.

Phone Holder

Your phone is often your all-in-one entertainment source during the flight. Use this phone holder to keep it within reach. Place it in the holder and sit back to enjoy a good flick or your favorite show. Dual joints with 360-degree rotation allow for the best viewing angle, whether you prefer vertical or horizontal orientation.

Portable Fan

Ever find yourself sweating on a plane? Next time bring a portable fan to cool off. This fan also features a flashlight and backup power bank function to charge your devices. It folds nicely into a small cylinder shape and will not take up room in your bags. A full charge can keep you cool for 21 hours. Also, it comes in several colors.

Handy Heater

Now for the other half that tends to get chills when traveling. Here is a heater you can wear around your neck. That's right: no sore arms from holding it up to your face. There are four heat settings to reach that perfect temp. If you're worried about space to pack it, you can simply leave it on, as it resembles a pair of headphones resting on your neck. So, no funny stares. The heater is powered by a rechargeable battery that holds up to six hours of charge.

Kick back and relax no matter where you are with a foot hammock. Even on a plane. You're kidding right? No, this portable hammock allows you to put your feet up and enjoy the flight. Hang it over the tray table and place your aching legs or feet into this comfy hammock. It is also adjustable and accommodates all sizes, even kids.

Celebrating the Magic: Halloween’s Impact on South Florida’s LGBTQ+ Community

In the gentle rustle of South Florida's palms, a sense of magic stirs. Halloween, a holiday woven with tradition and mystery, emerges as a beacon of light in our sunny paradise. For the LGBTQ+ community in this thriving region, this enchanting celebration holds a unique significance, uniting us in a community of creativity, self- expression, and a shared history of strength.

Halloween grants LGBTQ+ individuals a precious opportunity to stand proudly, revealing their authentic selves. In a region that cherishes diversity, this holiday provides a sanctuary where our varied identities are not only embraced but celebrated. Whether donning elaborate costumes or crafting bewitching makeup looks, we enjoy the freedom to express our most authentic selves without judgment or inhibition. Beyond personal expression, Halloween acts as a powerful catalyst for unity. Events and gatherings centered around this holiday offer spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals can forge connections, find support, and revel in the shared experience of being part of a vibrant and diverse community. These celebrations foster an invaluable sense of belonging, especially for those who may feel isolated or marginalized in their day-to-day lives. Moreover, Halloween allows us to revisit our history, drawing strength from those who came before us. From the subversive origins of drag culture to the early pioneers of LGBTQ+ rights who often found solace in secret masquerades, our community's connection to Halloween runs deep. The celebration of Halloween acts as a shining light, beckoning us to continue fighting for a world where every LGBTQ+ individual feels seen, heard, and valued.

Community-based organizations like SunServe play a pivotal role in ensuring the LGBTQ+ community has the resources and support needed to thrive.

This thrilling gathering will take place on Thursday, October 26th, from 7:00 PM to 12:00 AM. The event promises four haunted trails, live music, curated food, a full bar, raffles, and a wealth of community resources. Tickets at: SunServe.org/Haunt.

Pride Fort Lauderdale invites you to enter a realm where the boundaries between the living and the supernatural blur, as Pride Fort Lauderdale presents "Unholy." And last, but not least, prepare to immerse yourself in the eerie enchantment of “Little Drive of Horrors,” the captivating theme for this year's annual Wicked Manors. On the night of Tuesday, October 31st, from 5 pm to 11 pm, The Pride Center at Equality Park will once again transform Wilton Drive into a Halloween Street Festival.Tickets at: www.WickedManors.org. This is a beautiful opportunity to not only celebrate in the ghostly season but also to lend your support to a local LGBTQ+ youth organization meeting the growing needs of our community under attack.
