Five Steps to Start Each Day Strong By Family Features How you begin each day affects more than whether you make it to work on time. In fact, those early morning hours are often the foundation for your entire day. Set yourself up for success with these tips to help you maximize your mornings. Whether you're an early bird or a night owl, starting the day the right way can help you power through your to-do list.

22 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Wake Up On Time

Set your alarm for a reasonable hour that gives you ample time to get ready for the day ahead. If you have a commute or children or pets who need attention, be sure to factor in time for unexpected events like traffic jams or accidents. Avoid setting your alarm early and hitting snooze repeatedly; the quality of sleep you'll add is poor and you'll likely end up feeling more tired than if you'd just risen with the alarm.

#1

Get Your Body Moving

Even a light workout is a great way to rev up for a new day. Prioritizing your health to start the morning can put you in a healthier mindset. Completing a workout before the day is even fully underway gives you something to be proud of, which helps boost your mental well-being. What's more, an early workout gets your blood pumping, which supports stronger cognition and produces more energy.

#2

#3 Treat Yourself

It's never too early to give yourself a little TLC, and a delicious coffee-based drink is a great way to perk up your morning with a tasty treat. The best indulgent coffee beverages start with quality coffee. Consider options from Eight O'Clock Coffee, which has selected and roasted high-quality, 100% Arabica coffee for more than 100 years. The rich, smooth flavor means you can drink it black, but it's also the perfect base for a decadent latte with maple and vanilla or a classic iced caramel macchiato.

#4 Establish a Self-Care Routine

While you're still working toward being fully awake, a routine that lets you dive into daily preparations on autopilot can be helpful. Making time to take care of yourself can give you greater confidence to tackle the day, so find a pattern that fits and run with it. Aside from basic hygiene, take time to moisturize your skin and apply sunscreen. Also build in time to focus on your mental health, whether you make some notes in a gratitude journal or meditate to manage stress.

#5

Eat a Healthy Breakfast

Countless studies support the benefits of eating a nutritious breakfast. It's good for your metabolism and digestive health. It also gives your body the fuel it needs to help you push through the day. You're likely to think faster and be a more effective problem-solver when your body has proper nourishment. Eating early in the day also affects your mood; you're less likely to be irritable if you're not hungry.

Latinos Salud Presents

Two Events to Celebrate 15 Years of Community

32 | HotspotsMagazine.com

A Quinceañera in Ft. Lauderdale in January. A homecoming in Miami in February. Latinos Salud invites you to celebrate an amazing 15 years of service through these two special events. The agency opened in a small space on Wilton Drive 15 years ago. Executive Director Dr. Stephen Fallon said that “Our little agency that opened its doors in 2009 has really grown in recent years, with more services helping more people.” Today, Latinos Salud's four South Florida locations serve well over 10,000 LGBTQ community members each year. With everything from testing and screening, PrEP and vaccines, and now a new Youth Services program, a Health & Culture program, and this year, Pride Scholarships, Latinos Salud is here to help everyone. The two gala events will commemorate these efforts while celebrating the community. The Broward Quinceañera event will kick off on Saturday, January 13th with a VIP reception up on the seaside rooftop at the Westin Ft. Lauderdale Beach Resort, starting at 6 PM. Entry to the main event

for everyone begins at 7 PM with a full plated dinner, open bar, live music, silent auction, and surprises. The Broward event's theme colors will be pink, traditional for a Quinceañera, and crystal, the gem for a 15th anniversary. Rafaelé Narváez, Latinos Salud's Director of Health Programs invites everyone to “Come dressed in crystal, pink, or both! Or you can just choose a splash of pink or crystal to accentuate your outfit: a pocket square, tie, or even your socks.” Whether holding VIP or regular tickets, this Gala will kick off 2024 in high style. VIP ticket holders will also receive a “benefit in a box,” personally delivered before the event to their home or office, with tasty goodies and fun swag. They'll also get free valet parking, and access to two additional special plated dinner options. The Miami-Dade Gala will be held on Saturday, February 10th. Miami-Dade Senior Health Program Manager Johnathan Medina described how “We're calling this event, 'The Reveal,' because it will be held in the agency's upgraded space in Miami's SW. (We'll announce the address in mid-January).” The Miami Gala will open with an outdoor party leading to a grand welcome to the agency's new, large SW location, just renovated with all the style that visitors are used to

encountering each time they enter any other Latinos Salud location. “The Reveal” will feature passed hors d'oeuvres, live music, and dancing, plus a frontrow chance to tour the new space and meet the agency's growing staff. Everyone who attends will feel the kindness, energy, and passion of this dedicated agency. Can't decide which Gala to attend? Why not come to both? Latinos Salud is offering $50 off ticket prices to its Broward Quinceañera for guests who first book their ticket to the February 10th Miami Gala: “The Reveal.” 15 years of growth, community spirit, and lives changed. Latinos Salud has come of age!

For tickets go to Gala.LSalud.org.

Self-Care For A Successful New Year By Family Features Photos Courtesy of Unsplash

Resolving to commit to better self-care can happen any time of the year, but there's something about the calendar flipping to a new year that signals a fresh start. It's the perfect starting point for new habits and a new approach to protecting your overall wellness. Self-care takes many forms. Maintaining a well-balanced diet and getting plenty of

exercise are some ways to promote your physical health. So is taking good care of your body's largest organ: your skin. When it comes to mental health, getting organized is a surprisingly effective way to manage stress and keep your goals on track so you feel a sense of accomplishment. Start working toward a new year where

your wellness is front and center with these ideas for simplifying and personalizing your journey. Look for more lifestyle advice and helpful wellness tips at eLivingtoday.com.

Prepare for Healthier Eating Habits

Portion control is a common challenge when you kick off a healthier eating plan. One way to keep your meals on the modest side is preparing them ahead of time. Meal prep containers make it easy to have freshly prepared foods in moderate portions ready whenever you're ready to eat. Look for compartments that let you enjoy a main dish and at least one side, and be sure the containers seal tightly to keep food fresh and prevent leaks.

Add Whole Grains with Ease and Convenience

Eating whole grains has never been this easy or tasty. Convenient and ready in just 10 minutes, Minute Rice's Instant Brown Rice and Rice & Quinoa are must-haves for busy families. For those in need of an on-the-go option, Minute Rice Cups, including Brown Rice, Brown & Wild Rice, Brown Rice & Quinoa, Multi-Grain Medley and Jasmine Rice & Red Quinoa, are ready in just 60 seconds. Start the year off right and discover more time-saving solutions at MinuteRice.com.

Put Your Best Foot Forward

If stepping up your fitness game is part of your plan for 2024, be sure to start on the right foot with the right footwear for the job. Runners in particular should be conscious of quality shoes. Look for ample cushion, comfortable ankle support, overall quality construction and a snug fit that gives your toes some wiggle room. Even slight variations can affect your comfort, so trying on different options is likely your best path toward finding the perfect fit.

Introduce Weights for Your Workout

Whether you've hit a plateau or you're just bored with your workout, adding

HotspotsMagazine.com | 47

dumbbells can introduce a whole new dimension by helping build muscle and burn more fat. Rotating muscle groups lets you give your muscles a chance to recover between workouts. The options are nearly endless, so think about how you'll use them, where you'll store them, whether shape or color matters and how much you want to spend.

Make Skin Care a Personal Priority

Your skin tells an important story about your overall health. Protecting it from harsh elements and sun damage can help ensure your skin stays supple and strong, providing the barrier it's meant to as it protects the rest of your body. Even seemingly minor irritations like dry skin can be problematic as scratching or cracking can lead to wounds and infection. Rely on a regular moisturizer and be conscious of applying sunscreen whenever you'll be outdoors.

Plan for Success in the New Year

Give yourself a boost toward tackling this year's goals by getting organized. A planner can help you keep important information at your fingertips while making it easy to keep tabs on appointments, deadlines and more. You can even track progress against new habits or journal your way toward a heathier

diet. Some people prefer physical planners they can write in and update manually while others find a digital version in a smart device is more convenient.

Hadestown Comes to the Broward Center Jan 9 - Jan 21 By Scott Holland Photos By T Charles Erikson

78 | HotspotsMagazine.com

Hadestown, the winner of eight 2019 Tony Awards including Best New Musical and the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, will come to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts from January 9 – 21. Hadestown is the most honored show of the 2018-2019 Broadway season. In addition to the show's eight Tony Awards, it has been honored with four Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Outstanding New Broadway Musical, and the Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Musical. The North American touring production of Hadestown stars Amaya Braganza as Eurydice, Lana Gordon as Persephone, Will Mann as Hermes, Matthew Patrick Quinn as Hades, and J. Antonio Rodriguez as Orpheus. The Fates are played by Marla Louissaint, Lizzie Markson, and Hannah Schreer. The Workers Chorus features Sevon Askew, Jamal Lee Harris, Courtney

Lauster, Daniel Tracht, and Racquel Williams. Swings for the tour include Ian CoulterBuford, KC Dela Cruz, Colin LeMoine, and Cecilia Trippiedi. Producers Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy said jointly, “Throughout its development, Hadestown has been deeply influenced by audiences around the world. We are thrilled and humbled to now share this beautiful story of hope, faith, and rebirth – written and directed by two amazingly talented women and brought to life by a diverse company of performers – with audiences across North America.” Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Beguiling melodies and poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. The Grammy winning Hadestown Original Broadway Cast Recording is now available at Hadestown.com/music. It was a pleasure to sit down with Ian Coulter-Buford who understudies for Hermes and is a swing and the fight captain for this exclusive Hotspots interview.

At what age did you begin performing?

I began performing at the age of 3. I was singing at my local church (my grandfather was the pastor), and when they heard me, I got offered to sing all over. I started in musical theater at the age of 12.

What was your rst professional gig?

I want to say it was at the Muny Theater, and I think it was the Pajama Game. I got an hourly wage.

When did you know performing would be your career?

My junior year in high school. I was playing tennis my entire life and they told me I had to choose…and I chose performing. When I made that choice I knew it would be my career.

Hadestown has taken Broadway by storm, is there additional pressure touring in this show?

A little bit, because it has such an impact on so many people and you want to do well.

Other than this one, what has been your favorite role so far?

I did a show in the Denver area called “Trav'lin: A 1930s Harlem Musical Romance,” and I played Archie Stone. I loved that character.

What's your fantasy role (a role you haven't played but want to)?

I really want to play Lola in Kinky Boots. I think it would be a fun time and a big challenge.

How well do you and your castmates get along?

What should our readers expect from this touring company of “Hadestown”?

We get along really well. The producers of Hadestown are really good at bringing great people together for the show.

They should expect a great time and a beautiful roller coaster of emotions. In addition, there is very good music.

I would definitely say someone who understands my schedule. Someone who respects and appreciates the arts and my spirituality. Also, I need someone who is empathetic to humans. You may not agree with what everyone is doing. but you have to respect them.

For more information on Ian, you can follow him at: Instagram.com/iancoulterbuford

I hear you are single, what's the perfect guy for you?

Describe yourself in 3 words?

Jovial, Laid-back, and spontaneous.

What do you do for fun?

I love to play tennis and roller skate. Roller skating is my jam.

Get ready for a night of pulsating energy, fierce vocals, and a glittering spectacle that will leave you dancing in the euphoria of the moment!”

Freedom Williams of C+C Music Factory,

renowned for their chart-topping singles like “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now),” “Things That Make You Go Hmmm,” and “Just A Touch Of Love,” C+C Music Factory has secured its place in

music history. With an impressive collection of 35 music industry awards, including five Billboard Music Awards, five American Music Awards, and two MTV Video Music Awards, their impact resonates. In December 2016, Billboard magazine honored them by ranking C+C Music Factory as the 44th most successful dance artist of all time. “South Florida, get ready to brace yourselves for an explosion of dance and rhythm as we revive our chart-toppers like "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" and "Things That Make You Go Hmmm...". Our performance is not just a show; it's a journey through the very essence of our music. We're here to make this night an unforgettable celebration of music and memories. Don't miss out on the energy and excitement—we can't wait to share the stage with you!”

the release of his eponymous debut album. This album spawned hits like "Without You," "Look Into My Eyes," and a memorable duet with Brenda K. Starr titled "No Matter What." Showcasing his versatility as an artist, Lamond's #1 salsa hit, "Que Te Vas," became a testament to his musical range. Throughout the years, George Lamond has maintained his standing as a respected figure in both the freestyle and salsa genres, contributing significantly to the dynamic musical tapestry of the late '80s and beyond. “I'm thrilled to bring the vibes with hits like “Bad of the Heart” and “Que Te Vas.” Expect a performance that's not just a concert but a celebration of the freestyle era. We'll be taking it back to the '80s with a mix of freestyle and salsa beats, creating a night filled with energy, dance, and the timeless tunes that defined an era. It's going to be a party, and I can't wait to share it with all of you! See you there!”

Alisha, kicking off her musical journey with her debut single, "All Night Passion," dropped in February 1984 and swiftly ignited the club scene, soaring to No. 4 on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart. This early success paved the way for Alisha to craft her self-titled debut album, unleashed in 1985 under Vanguard Records. The album featured more club anthems, including "Too Turned On," which secured the No. 6 spot on Hot Dance charts in the U.S. Her breakthrough moment came with the megahit "Baby Talk," ascending to No. 1 on the Hot Dance charts in December 1985.

George Lamond, an American singer in both the freestyle and salsa music genres, burst onto the scene with his debut single, "Bad of the Heart," in 1989, swiftly establishing himself in the freestyle scene. The track, initially released on the indie label Ligosa Records, propelled Lamond into the limelight. Riding high on the success of "Bad of the Heart," he inked a deal with Columbia Records/Sony Music, leading to HotspotsMagazine.com | 97

“Hey South Florida! Get ready for a night of ”All Night Passion”, pure freestyle magic at the "GOTTA LOVE THE 80's" concert with yours truly, Alisha. I'll be bringing the heat with hits like my first single "All Night Passion”. The vibes won't stop there – I'll be singing my chart-toppers like "Too Turned On" and the mega-hit "Baby Talk," which dominated the Hot Dance charts at No. 1 in December 1985. I'm thrilled to transport you back to the era of neon lights and pulsating beats. Anticipate a performance that's a journey through the infectious rhythms that defined an era. Get ready to dance, reminisce, and relive the passion of the '80s with me! See you there for a night of unforgettable musical memories!”

Noel, from the Bronx, New York City, this American freestyle music sensation rose to prominence with his debut single, "Silent Morning," marking his inaugural entry into the Top 10 on the dance chart. Following this success, his second single, "Like a Child," not only climbed on the pop charts but in 1988 also secured his first number-one spot on the dance chart. “My performance embodies a musical expression through the physical form. Envision an evening marked by exuberant dancing, spontaneous movements, and an overwhelming sense of joy. My aim is not merely to entertain; rather, it is to wholeheartedly celebrate the art of performance.” Company B, dropping in 1986, with their debut single "Fascinated", quickly became the talk of Miami's club scene before radiating to local radio stations. Thanks to

the robust support from a major label (Atlantic Records), the track's reach expanded far and wide. "Fascinated" not only dominated the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart, clinching the top spot, but also transcended into pop radio, securing a noteworthy position at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. “South Florida, get ready for an electric night at the "GOTTA LOVE THE 80's" concert! We promise to ignite the stage with our number one hit "Fascinated" and follow-up hits like "Full Circle", “Perfect Love” and "Signed in Your Book of Love". Brace yourselves for a trip down memory lane as we unleash a wave of nostalgia and dance-worthy beats. Our performance is a celebration of the vibrant musical culture that thrived in our own backyard. We aim to take you on a journey through the soundtrack of the '80s that you know and love”.

C Bank, notable recording artists in the 80s and 90s, is associated with the freestyle music genre. C-Bank was actually a collaborative project created by the producers and songwriters John Robie and Raul Rodriguez. The music typically featured catchy electronic beats and was popular in the dance and club scene during that era. One of C-

Bank's well-known tracks is “One More Shot,” released in 1983, which gained popularity in the freestyle music circuit. The music often featured vocal contributions from various artists. While C-Bank might not be as individually recognized as some other artists, their work contributed to the vibrant and energetic landscape of the 80s and 90s music scene. “Hey South Florida! Bringing you an unforgettable blast from the past at the "GOTTA LOVE THE 80's" concert! When it comes to C-Bank, expect a performance that's all about those infectious electronic beats and the freestyle vibe that defined the 80s. We'll be bringing the energy with classics like "One More Shot," It's not just a concert; it's a journey through the beats that made memories. See you at The Parker in January for a night of freestyle magic!”

Nocera, also recogized by the alias Lulu

Nocera, is a Sicilian-American artist, celebrated as both a club DJ and a versatile singer spanning trip hop, pop, and freestyle genres. Her claim to fame rests on the vibrant freestyle scene, with standout hits like "Summertime Summertime" and "Let's Go," both resonating strongly in the musical landscape of 1986. “I'm thrilled to bring the energy with hits like “Summertime Summertime” and “Let's Go.” Expect a fusion of trip hop, pop, and the vibrant beats of freestyle. My journey from Sicily to the U.S. adds a unique flavor to the performance. We're talking about reliving those chart-topping moments from the '80s as we take a trip down memory lane. So, mark January 27 on your calendar because it's going to be a night

filled with nostalgia, infectious rhythms, and the unmistakable sound of freestyle. See you at The Parker for an unforgettable musical rendezvous!”

Giggles, a freestyle and dance-pop luminary in the late 1980s and early 1990s, is best known for her hit singles “Love Letter” and “What Goes Around, Comes Around”released in 1987, left an indelible mark on the freestyle music scene. Not only did her music feature catchy hooks and vibrant rhythms emblematic of the era, but it also created a significant impact in the genre. While MarLa may not have been the original recording artist, Giggles beautifully continues the legacy of these tunes, adding her own gentle touch to the brand. “Love Letter” remains a timeless classic, and Giggles is fondly remembered for her enduring contribution to the vibrant musical tapestry of the late '80s. “When it comes to my performance, expect nothing but infectious beats and the electrifying energy that defines freestyle. We're going to take it back with the classic “Love Letter” and more, creating a night filled with nostalgia, dance, and the timeless sound of the '80s. So, mark your calendars, because I Can't wait to share the stage with you all at The Parker!”

Take Control of Your Blood Pressure

7 Changes to Help Manage Your Health By Family Features

What you eat and drink, as well as your activity level and habits, affect your heart and brain health and are essential for managing blood pressure, cholesterol and more. High blood pressure (readings consistently higher than 130/80 mm Hg) is a

108 | HotspotsMagazine.com

leading cause and controllable risk factor for heart disease and stroke as well as other issues such as kidney failure, vision loss and sexual problems. In fact, nearly half of all American adults have high blood pressure, or

hypertension, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but many may not even realize they have it unless they experience other complications. What's more, ethnicity can also play a role in your risk factors. For example, Hispanic adults have some of the highest prevalence of poorly controlled blood pressure, according to the American Heart Association, which is one of the major risk factors for heart disease. Due to longstanding systemic barriers, such as a historic lack of access to health care and nutritious foods, the Hispanic and Latino community is disproportionately affected by heart disease and related health issues. Additionally, Black women of

childbearing age are more than twice as likely to have uncontrolled blood pressure than their white counterparts, according to research published in a special Go Red for Women issue of the “Journal of the American Heart Association.” Food insecurity, or lack of access to adequate healthy food options, is also higher among Hispanic and Black women compared to white women, and one of the social factors that may impact high blood pressure risk. To help maintain blood pressure below 120/80 mm Hg and manage risk factors, the American Heart Association with national support from Elevance Health Foundation recommends these lifestyle changes.

Maintain a healthy weight. If you're

overweight or obese, you're at increased risk of high blood pressure. Losing as few as 10 pounds (or 3-5% of your body weight) can provide health benefits, including lowering or preventing high blood pressure. Talk to your health care provider about a healthy approach to weight loss, including caloric intake and activities that may help both lose and maintain weight.

Eat healthier. Eating fruits and vegetables, such as mangos, avocados and blueberries, can lower blood pressure over time. Other smart choices include nuts and seeds, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean proteins and fish. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, or DASH, eating plan is geared toward reducing blood pressure and helps create a heart-healthy eating style. Reduce sodium. Americans consume up to

75% of their sodium from processed foods like soups, tomato sauce, condiments and canned goods. To help cut back, read labels when shopping and choose lowersodium versions of your favorite foods, skip the table salt and consider spices and herbs as seasoning alternatives.

Manage stress. Stress is known to contribute to risk factors for high blood pressure like poor diet and excessive alcohol consumption. Practicing relaxation techniques, such as yoga or deep breathing, practicing gratitude and doing things you enjoy can help reduce stress. Get active. Physical activity not only helps control high blood pressure, it also aids in weight management, strengthens your heart and lowers stress levels. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity, such as brisk walking. Limit alcohol. Drinking too much alcohol can raise your blood pressure. If you drink, limit

110 | HotspotsMagazine.com

consumption to no more than two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women.

Quit smoking. Every time you smoke, it

causes a temporary increase in blood pressure. Both smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke also increase the risk for plaque buildup inside the arteries, a process high blood pressure is known to accelerate.
