When did you get your �rst bicycle and your �rst �nicycle?

unicycle. My parents took me to see Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey in Sunrise (we lived in Weston) at 6 years old, and since then I wanted to try riding a unicycle. That Christmas my parents bought me a Unicycle and after that there was no looking back. By 15 I was touring and by 17 touring full time.
How did it feel when you found out you were a Guiness World record holder for riding the tallest unicycle in the world?
I set out to do it for a long time, as Guiness was my favorite book growing up and I wanted to be a part of that. I now broke the record 3 times and it's an honor to have your name in the book, and for 2024 my picture made it in the book. HotspotsMagazine.com | 25
You have traveled all over the world performing. Do you have a favorite city or cities?
Oh well I love south Florida because I was born and raised there, and I am excited to come back home and perform. Every place is a little bit different. As I soak every place in I learn about the culture and try the food and create memories for myself as I appreciate every opportunity.
What made you decide to work for Ringling Brothers and how has it been?
I always wanted to be a part of it since I was 6 years old. When it closed I thought the dream was over and then when they came back they saw me performing in Monte Carlo and that's where Kenneth Feld put in the word to make it happen. I got cast only 3 months before the show premiered.
What is your favorite part of this circus?
My favorite part is that I get to be a character in a lot of the acts, so I get to watch the acts every night. It almost doesn't feel real to me as I have been such a big fan almost all my life. The circus is timeless.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Energetic, youthful, daring, and unique…and yes I know that's 4 words.
What do you do for fun?
I am a huge football fan, and anything competitive.
What should our readers expect from this new version of the Greatest Show on Earth?
You can expect the unexpected, as we reinvented the circus. It’s circus at its heart but there are no animals. After 6 years off, we reflected and brought in technology, and risers and AV and we scoured the world of the best of the best. It's a 2-hour nonstop show. It entertains from ages 1 to grandparents and expect the unexpected because it really is special for everyone.

“...of course Carrie Bradshaw is my alter ego.” In her new one-woman show coming to the Kravis Center Friday – Sunday, January 26-28, Candace Bushnell, international best-selling novelist and creator of Sex and the City, takes us on a whirlwind tour of New York City sharing stories of fashion, literature and sex while pouring cosmos in Manolos. It was a pleasure to sit down with Candace for this exclusive Hotspots interview (full disclosure, I was Fan-Girling a bit).

At what point in your life did you realize writing would be your career, and what was the rst written piece you got paid for?
The full answer to this is in the show, but I knew I would be a writer when I was 8, and the first piece I got paid for is “How to Act in a Disco.”
When did you know you wanted to live in New York City?
I knew when I was a little kid I wanted to move to NYC, as I grew up in the suburbs, and I wanted a different exciting city life. I arrived in NYC in 1978.
What made you decide to write your column in The New York Observer called “Sex and the City". and did you ever expect to be as popular as it was?
Once again, the full answer to this is in the show. I was writing profiles of well-known people and it was getting a lot of attention and then the editor asked me if I wanted my own column, and I said yes. I was very lucky that it was pretty much an instant hit. After 6 or 7 columns there was a lot of interest in it.
of course Carrie Bradshaw is my alter ego. In addition, a lot of the characters in the first couple seasons are based on real people. In my show at Kravis, we will play a game called “Real or Not Real.”
How has the city changed from when you moved there until now?
It has changed so much, it's a lot of years. However, its still a going out city and its how you get a head in NYC, going out and networking.
You wrote many novels; do you have a favorite?
Probably “Trading Up,” as it really captures NYCin the turn of the century. It's really about the 90's New York, and there is a Harvey Weinstein character, etc. It also has an unlikeable heroine, which I love.
I heard you frequented Studio 54 in its heyday. What's your favorite story from there?
I was very young, and I definitely did not go to the basement with the likes of Mick Jagger, which was supposedly the cool place to hang out. I think my favorite story is when a friend of mine got locked in Studio 54 overnight. I did get to see the infamous Bianca Jagger on
How was it lming Sex and the City?
It was a lot of fun, but I didn't go to the set that often. In the beginning, I went a lot with Darren Star. HBO was very supportive of the show and put a lot of money into it. The show grew slowly over time, and the cast would hang out together and have parties.
How many of the characters in SATC are based on real people?
I would say Miranda, Samantha, and

the White Horse and a lot of women were dancing topless. There was glitter on the floor, and it was tracked all over the city. If you went to someone's apartment and saw the trail of glitter you knew they were in Studio 54.
How did “And Just Like That” come about (full disclosure I'm obsessed)?
It came about because I wrote a book called “Is there Still Sex and The City,” which was the women 25 years later. At that point everybody was rebooting shows, and this seemed like a natural.
Is there a perfect guy for you? And if so, what qualities does he possess?
It's got to be somebody who is smart, loves life. and has a sense of humor.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Smart, loves-life and humorous.
What do you do for fun?
Honestly, I love to see friends. Especially after the pandemic.
What should the South Florida Audience expect from your one woman show?
They should expect the origin story of Sex and The City: how I created it, and how hard I worked to get there. Why I invented Carrie Bradshaw and what happened to me afterwards. Audience members always come up to me and find the show very inspiring, and you definitely have some laughs.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, one of the world's most beloved dance companies, is celebrating its 65thanniversary season. The engagement will showcase the passionate spirit and extraordinary technique of the Company's dancers. The season's repertory includes exciting new works commissioned especially for Ailey: Amy Hall Garner's rousing, high-spirited tribute to her grandfather,
CENTURY; Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish's dreamlike reminiscence of romance, Me, Myself and You; new productions of Ronald K. Brown's Dancing Spirit, Jamar Roberts' Ode and Solo by Hans van Manen; and, as always, Alvin Ailey's must-see American masterpiece Revelations. Since its debut in 1960, Revelations has been moving audiences with its powerful storytelling and soul-stirring music, evoking timeless themes of determination, hope and transcendence. An intimate reflection of Ailey's childhood memories of growing up in the South and attending services at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Texas, Revelations pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of the African American community and explores the emotional spectrum of the human condition. In 2008, a U.S. Congressional resolution designated the company “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world” that celebrates the African American cultural
experience and preserves and enriches America's modern dance heritage. Although he created 79 ballets over his lifetime, Ailey maintained that his company was not exclusively a repository for his own work. For those of you who have not had the chance to see the Alvin Ailey Dance Company perform, I urge you to go and see them as they tell stories through dance compositions that reaches your heart and soul. It was a pleasure to sit down with the choreographer of Ode and former Ailey dancer Jamar Roberts for this exclusive Hotspots interview.
At what age did you begin performing?
I started dancing at 10 and started performing professionally at Ailey 2 at 18. There was a girl who invited me to an after-school dance club, and I did it and never stopped.
What was your rst professional dance gig?
It was probably Ailey 2 right after high school.
When did you know performing would be your career?
It took me a long time to come to that decision. I think about 4 years into dancing full time is when I realized I wanted to take this seriously and make this my career.
How did it feel when you got hired to be an Alvin Ailey dancer?

professional dancing. There is a separate audition process to become an Alvin Ailey dancer. The audition process was filled with amazing dancers, so I felt like I won the game when I got hired. It was the beginning of everything.
What is your all-time favorite dance piece that you performed?
There isn't one single piece, but rather there are multiple pieces. However, if you forced me to pick, there is a piece called “Masekela Langage,” it's one of Ailey's more theatrical works and there is tons of characterizations and lots of props. I loved being immersed in that world he created.
Did you always like being a choreographer or when did you take an interest in it?
That another thing that just kind of happened. Angel Frazier Logan was my dance teacher, but she was very passionate about choreography, and I inherited her practice of generating movement and coming up with new pieces. I adopted it even though I wasn't thinking of being a choreographer. I loved the act of creating and movement and this led to a full-fledged choreographic career.
Tell me about the process of choreographing Ode?

men being shot by police. It was very hard to choreograph but it was a great process. For me it was a bold and courageous piece to make, and the content was very close to the cast. It is now being performed by an all-female cast who are incredible.
Do you have an all-time favorite piece you choreographed?
I think Ode is my favorite piece as its exemplary of what I stand for as an artist conceptually and esthetically.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Caring, deep, and generous.
What do you do for fun?
I read a lot and listen to music and love to have dinners and hang out with my friends. I also love to see shows.
What should our readers expect from this production of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater?
I think you should expect to see humanity at its highest level. If one of the reasons to be on this planet is to connect, this company does this 100% in so many ways.

At what age did you begin performing?
I began performing around age 3, to the excitement or dismay of my parents. Usually at dance parties or when records were playing around the living room. My parents were big music lovers. My mom said I started singing at 6 months.

What was your first professional gig? And how much did you get paid?
Professionally I got paid to play Annie at a regional theater in Pennsylvania. I don't remember how much, but it wasn't very much. I remember I had to dye my hair and I was very serious and excited about it.
When did you know performing would be your career?
I knew growing up that singing was my passion, and it was inherently something I needed to do, but I didn't know how to get there. I went into the world of Finance first. But eventually found it again when I was 30 years old. But I always knew this was for me.
Tell me the process in transforming into Elphaba which you played for 2 years?
I started on tour in 2017 after I left Fiddler on Roof on Broadway. However, I hadn't seen Wicked since it opened in 2003. When the makeup happens for the first time (its only takes about a ½ hour...but it's a very intricate process) you do feel different afterwards. You are very aware on stage that you are the only one painted and look different, and it forms the role and the emotional arc of how you feel.

Other than Elphaba, what has been your favorite role so far?
I recently got to star in "Chess" and play Florence which was created by the writers of Abba. It's not cheery but it's a rock opera, and the music is some of the most incredible I ever got to sing. Florence holds up the hole show, and it was a fantastic experience.
What's your fantasy role (a role you haven't played but want to)?
Someday when I reach the age appropriateness of it, I would love a chance to play Mama Rose in Gypsy. On the docket for me next is Beaches, which is coming to Broadway, and I am going to play the Bette Midler role.
In 2021 you sold-out Carnegie Hall, tell me about that experience?
On top of it just being an incredible experience to headline Carnegie Hall, it happened during the pandemic when the theaters were thinking about opening again. That's when I got the green light, and it was very surreal to me. I always wanted to start a solo career, but I never thought it would begin at Carnegie Hall. I don't remember the evening at all, but I know it happened and I

was there. The only thing I do remember is my encore singing a Judy Garland Song. It jumpstarted the life I have now.

Jersey, scrappy and empathetic
What do you do for fun?
I love to hike and cook. I have a dog that is my child so anything relating to him I love. I also love to garden.
What should our readers expect from your show at the Parker?
I'm joining John McDaniel (musical director for Rosie O’Donnell show) and you can expect a lot of stories of how I got to Broadway and Carnegie Hall. Also included are the roles I played, and the finance world. The show will cover everything, and has tons of audience participation…I come out to the audience quite a few times. In addition, I always do a meet and greet after my performance.

On January 28 the third annual My Hollywood Pride Street festival, celebrating the South Florida LGBTQ+ community, returns to Downtown Hollywood as the first Pride of 2024 anywhere in the world. The 2024 theme will be “Pride Starts Here!” The event will be presented by the Quadraci-Cabrera family, and local philanthropists who have supported the event since its inception. They will be partnering with the National LGBTQ Task Force, the nation's oldest LGBTQ advocacy organization. Their mission to advance full freedom, justice, and equality
for LGBTQ people dates back to their inception in 1973 and they have been at the forefront of the LGBTQ movement. The collaboration with community leaders like the Quadracci-Cabrera family and the Task Force continues the tradition that My Hollywood Pride has built on since its inception. The fun-filled weekend of advocacy begins Friday night with a Circle of Pride business networking event on Hollywood Beach. Rethinking Resolutions in the Queer Community

The start of a new year often brings with it a tradition deeply ingrained in our culture: the setting of New Year's resolutions. As we step into the first weeks of the year, many of us find ourselves reflecting on these goals, sometimes with a sense of frustration or disappointment. As a queer mental health counselor and an active member of the LGBTQ+ community, I understand the unique pressures and challenges we face. In this light, I'd like to offer an alternative perspective on resolutions and selfimprovement. In the queer community, our experiences are richly diverse, individually unique, and commonly interwoven with stories of strength and courage. This context is vital when considering resolutions. Often, these goals stem from societal expectations rather than our authentic desires. The emphasis on achieving specific outcomes can inadvertently lead to self-criticism, particularly when we deviate from these set goals. It's essential to recognize that self-improvement is not a rigid, linear
process, but a fluid journey that honors our individuality and respects our pace. Let's shift the focus from what we have not achieved to celebrating what we have. Perhaps you've made a new friend, explored a part of your identity, or simply given yourself permission to rest. These moments are significant milestones in our journey. They reflect our strength, our willingness to explore, and our commitment to self-care– aspects far more critical than sticking to a traditional resolution. In our journey of self-discovery and growth, self-compassion is a powerful tool. It's about treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we would offer a good friend. This approach fosters resilience, enabling us to navigate life's challenges with a sense of grace and empathy for ourselves. Remember, setbacks are not failures; they are opportunities to learn and grow. As we redefine our approach to personal growth, I encourage setting intentions rather than resolutions. Intentions are flexible and can evolve with us throughout the year. They can be as simple as being more present, embracing our identities, or nurturing connections with others. These intentions should resonate with your core values and enhance your well-being, rather than being a checklist of tasks to accomplish.

Women With Pride Coordinator at The Pride Center at Equality Park By Maria Espinal
Now that the Holidays have come and gone, we continue with our features highlighintin the women in our community. This time, allow me to introduce you to Diane Pappafotis, the Women With Pride Coordinator at The Pride Center since May 2023 where she manages the outreach, education, and linkage services as well as organizes events, activities, social media presence, and groups for LBTQ+ Women. Before coming to The Pride Center, Diane was the Senior Vice President of Membership & State Relations for LeadingAge, a national non-profit membership association serving older adults. Prior to that, Diane worked primarily in technology and operations developing and implementing information systems, data, and business processes across the organization. Diane was also with the Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art & Design in Washington, D.C. from 2000 to 2005 and served as the
Assistant Director of Technology, along with volunteering in the Washington D.C. area. Locally, in 2022 helped to start and serves on the Executive Team of a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to supporting and preserving parks and green spaces in Wilton Manors. Diane also is one of the founders of SkirtSoFlo Magazine, a women's publication for the South Florida LGBTQ+ community.
Do you have any women LGBT icons who have left a mark on you and/or motivated you to be part of an LGBT organization?
Katie Smith Sloan, the CEO of LeadingAge, is someone who I admired and looking back, heavily influenced my career. Katie became the CEO of LeadingAge (my former employer) during my seventeen year tenure and it was the first time in my career that I worked for an organization with a woman as the leader. It's hard to summarize the many ways that Katie influenced my leadership style, but I believe that leading by (positive) example and always putting people first are two convictions that I try to uphold and that I experienced working for Katie. And while Katie was not a formal mentor, she was someone that I emulated.

The LGBTQ+ population in and surrounding Wilton Manors is predominantly white males, and that means relatively fewer individuals who engage with women's programming. Do you think women's needs within the LGBTQ community have changed?
I don't know if women's needs have changed, but I do believe there is a continued perception in this area that there are few or no places or services "for

A friend told me about the opening for a Women With Pride Coordinator. A few months prior I left my previous organization and was planning to take some time off to figure out what I wanted to do next. The

women". My expectation is that women are welcome everywhere, but I want to help develop more events and services that are focused on women through the WWP program. For example, the LBT Health Directory located on The Pride Center website is a searchable database that includes doctors and medical professionals in a variety of variety of categories who are sensitive to the unique needs of the LBT community.
What are some of the programs/events for women at The Center?
One of the new events is the Afternoon Delight Series co-hosted by the Second Tuesday Lesbian Social Group. This event happens quarterly and the next one is scheduled for January 27th at The Pride Center. Also, the Active Aging Program hosts a weekly event at 10am on Tuesdays called Coffee & Conversation, the largest weekly gathering of LGBTQ+ seniors. This is a great community event that is starting to see more women in attendance.
How big is the women's base of members and/or supporters at The Pride Center? What's their demographics and how can we help you improve those numbers?
The Pride Center is seeing an increasing number of women engage in programming
at we expect that number to grow as we roll out more services and events targeted for women. HotSpots can help to highlight and promote the women's programing at The Pride Center and of other organizations who offer women's focused content. From my perspective, there seems to be a lot of organizations and social groups creating content for women but most of the LGBTQ+ news and entertainment publications do little or no promotion of women's events.
What’s ahead for 2024?
March is National Women's History Month and Women With Pride has two events planned. The first event on March 2nd is called “Our Voices: The Past 50+ Years” where we will hear from women in the community who have been involved in significant events in women's history. The other is “Jammin’ at the Center,” a winter season jazz concert series, featuring the Valerie Tyson Band. The March concert is a "Women With Pride takeover" and will feature a women's reception before the concert. Another annual marquee event taking place on March 9th is the “Diversity Honors” gala honoring extraordinary men and women the LGBTQ+ community.
