For the last 25 years, Outsports has been the only publication in the world covering LGBTQ issue in sports on a daily basis. The site was founded in 1999 by Jim Buzinski and me because, as gay sports fans and athletes at the time, we saw nobody in the sports media talking about the gay community, and we saw no one in gay media talking about sports.
In those two-plus decades, Outsports has showcased stories that have helped move the needle in sports, building more inclusion and opening people's eyes the accepting nature of athletes, particularly in men's sports.
In looking back at the last 25 years, these are 10 of the stories that stand out as having generated conversation about LGBTQ inclusion in sports, particularly in America.
High school football player Corey Johnson comes out, 2000
The first major story Outsports published that had an eye-opening impact on the sports world was actually a republish of a story that appeared in Bay Windows in Massachusetts, about high school football captain Corey Johnson who came out to his team and was accepted. The idea seemed impossible in 2000, but it gave us a glimpse into the reality of athletes accepting gay teammates. Corey Johnson went on to be elected Speaker of the New York City Council.
'Gay' Not Allowed On NFL Jerseys, 2005
Possibly the most-read story Outsports ever published shared that the NFL wouldn't allow fans to put the word “gay” on the back of their jerseys. When an Outsports reader with a tech background did some digging, he found about 1,100 terms the NFL banned from its jerseys, mostly terms considered offensive.
Former College Football Captain Was Openly
Gay, 2009
Brian Sims was a lawyer in Philadelphia when Outsports published a story about his time as an out gay captain of his Bloomsburg University football team. The response to the story was overwhelming, launching Sims' political career and landing Outsports its first GLAAD Media Awards nomination.
‘The eagle has landed', 2014
When Michael Sam hired publicist Howard Bragman to help him with his public coming out, Bragman immediately tapped me as his righthand man in figuring out the who, how and when of Sam's historic journey out of the closet ahead of the 2014 NFL Draft. This article was a tiktok of the three weeks of planning leading up to Sam's groundbreaking announcement.
photo: outsports.comGay Kentucky basketball player comes out at a game, gets chased by opposing team, 2015 Dalton Maldonado was a starting guard for his high school basketball team in Kentucky. And it wasn't a secret that he was gay, with his high school teammates supporting him. Maldonado shared with Outsports his wild story of being harassed at a game by an opposing team, and then allegedly seeing that team chase him onto his team's bus and then chase the bus to attack him.
Former Super Bowl player Ryan O'Callaghan comes out as gay, 2017 O'Callaghan's public coming-out story on Outsports showcased the potential consequences of homophobia in sports and society, as he opened up about plans to commit suicide. It also demonstrated the pitfalls of the banning of marijuana, as he (like so many professional athletes) used it to cope with the physical pain of professional sports, turning to prescription drugs when he was caught. How a couple members of the Kansas City Chiefs organization helped save O'Callaghan's life is a testament to the underlying love and support in the NFL.
This gay college athlete was disowned by her parents and left with nothing, 2018 When Canisius College runner Emily Scheck came out to her parents, they disowned her and refused to pay for college. To help her stay at the Division III school, Scheck's friends started a GoFundMe. The College and the NCAA told her that she could not accept any funding help and continue to run for the school. When one of her teammates contacted Outsports for help, our outreach to the school and NCAA was rejected. Our story about Scheck ignited a firestorm of backlash against the school and the NCAA, who rescinded their decision within a day. We helped raise $100k for Scheck, paying for the rest of her entire education.
At least 186 out LGBTQ athletes at the Tokyo Summer Olympics, by far a record, 2021 Every Olympics, Outsports lists the publicly
out LGBTQ athletes competing. The 186 out athletes Outsports identified in 2021 for the Tokyo Summer Olympics was an eye-popping number and generated headlines around the world. It also showed that sports have truly come a long way in the acceptance of LGBTQ people.
Jacksonville Jaguars strength coach Kevin Maxen comes out in the NFL, a rst in major US men's pro sports, 2023
When Maxen contacted Outsports in early 2022, he thought that coming out publicly might be the end of his NFL coaching career. Eighteen months later, he listened to my advice and slowly told a few people in the Jaguars organization. When Outsports shared his story publicly, he felt an outpouring of support from across the team, including owner Shad Khan.
The NHL has banned Pride Tape, creating its own 'Don't Say Gay' policy on the ice, 2023 When Outsports learned last year that the NHL had banned players from wearing Pride jerseys, and using Pride Tape on their warm-up sticks, during games, we knew our reporting on it would be a public relations disaster for the league. It was. Players revolted. Fans said they'd never watch again. Members of the media s hook their collective heads at one of the worst public-relations decisions they'd ever seen from a pro sports league. Ultimately, thanks to Outsports' reporting, the NHL rescinded its ban of Pride Tape.
Cyd Zeigler is the world's foremost commentator and writer in the eld of sexuality and sports. He co-founded Outsports in 1999, the world's only daily LGBTQ+ sports publication. Zeigler has broken the major sports LGBTQ+ news stories that became the source for American major media. He founded the National Gay Flag Football League. He has been a major contributor to Playboy, MSNBC, CNN, Out Magazine, ESPN, The New York Times and Sports Illustrated. He is a recipient of the LGBTQ+ Journalists Hall of Fame. Meet Our Cover Model
Photos by Dennis Dean Interview by Scott HollandI live in Wilton Manors. Recently moved to a beautiful house I purchased. I'm from Israel originally but live down here now for six years.
What is your perfect date?
Romantic dinner at home, with chill music, candles and cuddles at the end with a good movie.
What do you do for a living?
Today I am a full-time massage therapist and project manager in real estate, where I renovate and flip places for people. I used to be a model back in Israel and did campaigns on social media as an influencer and worked as personal trainer in the army after I finished my service.
What do you do for fun?
Play softball, a lot of cornhole and chill out at home when I have some free time for myself .
I was invited to a pool party, and I saw two boards but never heard about the game. I asked one of my friends about the game and how does it work and wanted to try. I got hooked pretty quickly!
Do we have Cornhole in Fort Lauderdale?
Yes, I am playing Pride sport. It's a league in Wilton Manors in Rosie's parking lot, every Wednesday at 7pm. We have 100 people in the league.
Have you won any Cornhole tournaments?
Yes, I won three gold medals with the 3 other players on my team. We won 3 seasons in a row. I play with the ACLAmerican Cornhole League which is professional and has different skill levels. I won my first singles tournament. First place competitive doubles in Sarasota tournament and twice second place singles and blind draw competitive level. What is the best part about Cornhole in your opinion?
It's a game that's very easy to pick up. Any age, size or gender can play!!!
$50,000) which will be a live broadcast on ESPN and CBS.
How long have you been playing?
Started last September, just a year and a half ago.
Tell me something people don't know about the game?
Corn Hole is booming. Over 25 million people are playing the game worldwide. On the ACL league we have 250,000 players. The tournament has an entry fee and cash prizes. There are more than 2000 tournaments a year all over the US. The numbers are growing every year and I will not be surprised to see the gam e Cornhole being played in the Olympics a few years from now.

It was a pleasure to sit down with our friend, DJ Deanne, for this exclusive Hotpots Interview.
When did you realize you wanted to be a DJ?
I came out of the closet when I was 24 and moved to Tampa. I started going to clubs which was something I hadn't ever really done as a straight person. This was in the late 90's, so I was hearing all those yummy house tunes (classics now) along with the big room mixes from Thunderpuss, Hex Hector, Junior Vasquez and so on and I was just hooked. I started acquiring all the music that I was hearing. At the clubs, I would try to ID the next song in the mix faster than anyone else. It was kind of an obsession for a while. It wasn't until I moved back to Indiana in '99 to go back to school that I started bartending at a small gay club called Bullwinkle's. The DJs at the bar used to let me practice on the turntables before we opened. I was fascinated and determined to learn how to mix. I started meeting more people in the scene and was gifted a used Technic 1200 turntable by my first mentor, Wayne Shepherd. I bought the rest of the equipment to make a set and began practicing at home. I would play afterhours parties with all my friends, learning without the

pressure but with an audience. One thing led to another and before I knew it, I was playing at that small gay bar in Indiana. It wasn't until a few years later, when I was considering grad school, that I had a transformative DJ experience that changed my entire trajectory. I knew pretty much on that day grad school was out. Where are you from, and what brought you to Florida?
I am originally from the Midwest, Kentucky to be exact. But, I spent most of my late 20's and early 30's in Indianapolis. As I spoke about, I was already a working DJ in Indianapolis, but I wasn't fully committing all my time and effort to DJing full time. I had been coming down to play at Twist on a fairly regular basis over the years and was gaining more popularity and visibility in the Miami area. The vibe down there was just so different than in Indy and it would reinvigorate me until the next time. It just started feeling more and more like home on every visit until my wife and I moved to South Florida in 2013 to concentrate fully on this career. It felt like to me that Miami was going to be instrumental in really launching me and I was right.
What was your rst residency, and how did that feel?
The DJ who played the drag shows on Monday nights at Bullwinkle's needed to give up that night and the club owner was convinced by the resident DJs to give me a chance. I mean, it was Monday night, so no one else really wanted the gig. I would play one hour before the shows started, about 30 minutes between each show, and about 2 hours after the shows were over. Virtually no one was there except for my 10 friends on that first night. I'm sure I train wrecked more than once. But the very first track I ever played was the Francois K and Eric Kupper mix of “Forever More” by Moloko. And I loved everything about the entire experience. What separates you from other DJs?
That's a tough question. I'm sure there is a lot about me that is much like other DJs. I consider myself very versatile. I can and enjoy playing appropriate, well-curated music for a diverse range of events. So often you go to parties where the DJs are just banging it out at a pool party at 2pm. I feel like there's a time and place for different vibes, genres, tempos, styles. For that reason, I feel like my library is thick and deep. Since the pandemic, and this may be what sets me apart from others, I have been committed to only playing what feels true to my artistry and keeps me moving forward sonically. I think it's time for our scene to grow and evolve, musically, and I want to be on the front end of that transformation. It's risky sometimes, but the reward is immeasurable and immensely gratifying. What are some memorable moments from the DJ booth?
There are so many. A few that stand out are the Masterbeat Spring Break party at Academy in 2023, Masterbeat Pride at Avalon in 2022, Atlanta Pride Closing Party in 2022, the Dallas Purple Party Main Event in 2019, so many of the Prides across the US over the years. Honestly, it could be a 5,000-person party or a 500-person party. If I'm hittin' it and connect with the crowd, there really is no better feeling. And I am so lucky to have so many of those. But a
true core memory is playing for Hillton Wolman's Heat party in 2018 at Space on the Terrace. The place of legends. Other than DJing, what do you like to do for fun?
I love to travel and sightsee. I really enjoy being a tourist in these cities that I play in. So much to see and experience. It really feeds my soul. Your wife, Nicole, is just as famous as you are, how did you meet and what makes her the perfect women for you?
Oh, she'll love that you describe her in that way! Given the choice, I think most people would take her over me any day. We met when I was working at the club in Indianapolis. She was secretly crushing on me for a long time. The universe and timing aligned, and our friendship transformed into a partnership, and we've been together for 14 years now (married for 9). What makes her perfect for me is that she is my best friend, she gives me space to be the complicated artist/person that I am, she supports my career, and she genuinely likes what I do and how it enhances our lives (most of the time). And it doesn't hurt that she's a stunner.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Tenacious, determined, and passionate What should we expect from your set at HEAT on Friday March 1?
I am so excited to play for Hilton and Winter Party again after several years away. And super excited to share the night with Eddie Martinez. We've never played a party together and I think that our sounds are a perfect pairing. I'm playing first and I'll be punching out a spicy set filled with lots of house music, a bit of attitude, a healthy dose of drums and much energy. Eddie plays very big and sexy, so I'll be adding a touch of that, as well, to blend perfectly into his closing set. It should be a really fun night!
What does the future hold for you?
My traveling schedule is staying pretty full and I am so grateful for that. I have some amazing residencies across the US and am playing several key parties
this year that are already on the books and I'm looking forward to adding more. Most importantly, I'll be spending more time in the producer's chair and getting back to making music. I have some lofty goals I have set for myself this year and I usually get what I set my sights on. So, stay tuned and let's see what happens!

Starting life as a popular cabaret and dance hall, the venue became an iconic music hall in the Roaring Twenties, and then a theatre where numerous famous French and international artists stepped out into the limelight. Today, the Moulin Rouge and its 60 artists present the Féerie revue show: two hours of amazement between cabaret and music hall styles where dance scenes and surprise acts intersperse – without forgetting the Moulin Rouge's most emblematic dance, the French Cancan! It was a pleasure to sit down with Danny Burgos for this exclusive Hotspots interview: At what age did you begin performing?
I started performing when I was 9 or 10, as I would sing in church along with my aunts. One day one of my aunts couldn't sing and I got to sing her solo and the rest was history. I started singing in Musical theater when I was 13. Here is how it happened…I was singing at Coldstone Creamery, and I got a tip, that
guy came back and tipped me again and he happened to be the musical director of the community theater and he hired me.
What was your rst professional gig?
I want to say it was after my freshman year in college I worked at Flat Rock Playhouse in Flat Rock North Carolina, and I think I got paid $100 a week. You are also a nurse; how do you balance the 2 careers?
Being in Moulin Rouge, I have had to take a brief sabbatical from being a nurse. However, my goal would be to be in a Broadway show Tuesday through Sunday and work a couple shifts a month as a nurse.
Moulin Rouge has taken Broadway by storm, is there additional pressure touring in this show?
I think there is, only because we have such a following from the movie and then from the Broadway show. The fan base is insane in the best way possible as they clock everything. There definitely is pressure to make it just as good as the Broadway production. Other than this one, what has been your favorite role so far?
Before this, I played Emilio Estefan in “On
Your Feet.” I am a first full generation American as my mom is Cuban, but my dad is Puerto Rican. It was my favorite part, because I was also able to speak Spanish on stage, and it was great to be able to be authentically Latino and show my culture.
What's your fantasy role (a role you haven't played but want to)?
Hamilton in Hamilton. I saw it one time and I realized I need to be in that before I die. You are part of the LGBTQ+ community, are you single or married?
I am definitely single!
What are you looking for in the perfect guy?
I need clear communication; I want to know the partner I have is willing to listen to me as much as they are willing to talk. I also enjoy someone who is very passionate about what it is they do. They don't have to love what I do, but they must hear about it, as I am always willing to hear about their passions.
How well do you and your castmates get along?
As good as possible. This group is particularly good at supporting one another. We are very cohesive as we understand how to work well together.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Charismatic, emotional, and resilient
What do you do for fun?
I am a tennis player and when I am in New York I am usually in a league. I also like to wake up early and go for a jog. In addition, I am big on any type of outdoor activities. If I can see the sky, it is very therapeutic for my heart and soul.
What should our readers expect from this touring company of “Moulin Rouge”?
It is everything people love about the movie and then they added more and made it better. They kept the larger-thanlife quality and made it even bigger for the stage. You will hear the classics and then also hear some Beyonce, Cia, etc. In a nutshell, this is a big ole romcom on the stage and I love seeing all the smiling faces in the audience. It makes for a great night at the theater. Its just a good time for anyone from 12 to 112. What I hear from people who see the show is that it always exceeds their expectations.

The foundation will also bestow Harvey Milk Medals to:
Music pioneer, multiple Grammy Awardwinner and LGBTQ+ activist Belinda Carlisle, who when we asked her about her honor she told Hotspots "This for me was such a huge surprise that I got emotional just thinking about what this means, to be honored by the Harvey Milk Foundation. I remember the first case of HIV/AIDS in Hollywood, I remember the terror, losing my friends and the stigma attached to this disease that no one really knew anything about. I remember the fight for marriage equality. For me, involving myself in the LGBTQ+ community was a no brainer. You don't think - you just do

whatever you need to do - so I always did and will always continue to do so! To be able to support the Harvey Milk Foundation and its global influence at the Diversity Awards on March 9, means even more knowing my son will be there with me. I was actually blessed with a gay son - and when 'Duke' came out to me at 14, the first thing I thought was "what kind of world will he have to face." So, of course as a mother, I stepped up and wanted to be involved with supporting him and other LGBTQ+ people around America and the world. Harvey Milk's legacy as a pioneer and inspirational leader continues to have a profound impact on millions through the work of the Milk Foundation, so to be bestowed with their award named after Harvey is an immeasurable honor."
Native American (Seminole/Choctaw) award-winning singer/songwriter, producer and actor Spencer Battiest who when he spoke to Hotspots said: “I am honored and humbled to be recognized by the Harvey Milk Foundation at this year's Diversity Honors. As a queer indigenous entertainer, we are often overlooked for our work and contributions. To be acknowledged by my peers and the broader LGBTQ+ community is incredibly meaningful.
This award not only celebrates my personal journey, but also reflects the strength and resilience of an inclusive community that thrives on diversity and love. It stands as a testament to the progress we've made and the work that still lies ahead. I am inspired to continue living authentically and I am grateful for Diversity Honors shedding light on two spirit and indigenous LGBTQ+ people.”
Entrepreneur Mark Hunter Seymour will receive The Pride Center at Equality Park Alan Schubert Award. Mark is not only an advertiser but a friend to Hotspots and when we asked him about this honor he said: “I am so proud of the Hunters Nightclubs legacy. For the last 42 years we have created an all welcoming, safe, and fun environment where members of the LGBTQ plus community can gather, relax, and feel free being themselves, without judgement. Being the recipient of the Alan Schubert Award of Excellence, I am honored, thrilled and humbled.”
In addition, Tatiana Williams (Founder and Executive Director of Trans Inclusive) and the Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida will receive Diversity Honors awards on Saturday, March 9, at 7pm.
“Diversity Honors celebrates the vision
of Harvey Milk and the dream for a better tomorrow filled with the hope for equality and a world without hate,” said Susan Renneisen, vice president of community affairs and special events for Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood. “We are honored to produce this event, in support of the Harvey Milk Foundation and The Pride Center at Equality Park, which recognizes those who are transforming lives by living authentically and advancing inclusiveness. Billy Porter, Belinda Carlisle and Spencer Battiest along with a host of local honorees are well-deserving of this salute for all they do to make the world a more united place for everyone.”
The cocktail chic event will be a night to remember beginning with an elaborate cocktail reception featuring entertainment by Miss Bouvee. A seated dining experience in the Grand Ballroom will immediately follow with musical entertainment by international singer/songwriter Debby Holiday presented by STOLI and the awards presentation. The celebration continues with the STOLI “Spirit of Change” after-party poolside at The Guitar Hotel where guests can look forward to STOLI espresso martinis, mermaids, magicians and more.
The night also signifies the unveiling of a bold new face and global rebrand for STOLI, a world-renowned premium vodka brand and a longtime sponsor of Diversity Honors.
The vodka leader will launch its “Spirit of Change” campaign in celebration of transformative people such as this year's award recipients.
Diversity Honors is a collaborative effort that will continue to keep South Florida on the international stage of LGBTQ+ rights and activism in honor of Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States who was assassinated shortly after winning a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and has since gone on to become an icon and beacon of light for the global LGBTQ+ community. This year marks the 46th anniversary of Harvey Milk's historic election.
Over the years, Diversity Honors has paid tribute to an impressive roster of honorees. Diversity Honors is exclusively hosted by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, with Platinum Sponsor DMK – Danne Montague-King, Diamond Sponsors Stoli Vodka and Seminole Coconut Creek Casino, supporting sponsors Davidoff of Geneva, GPR | Goodman Public Relations, Dex Imaging and Ludwig Framemakers and media sponsors HOTspots Happening Out, OutClique and OutSFL!

At what age did you begin performing?
I started performing at a young age in church. My mom was a vocalist, so I was naturally singing where she was. I went to performing arts middle school and high school and started performing professionally in the 8th grade.
What was your rst professional gig and how much did you get paid?
I don't remember as I was too young, and I am sure my mom was managing my money at the time.
When did you know performing would be your career?
I'd say about when I was auditioning for high schools. At that point I was becoming very versed in performance, and at that time I had a conversation with my parents that I wanted to do this seriously for a lifetime.
Other than this one, what has been your favorite role so far?
I have also done operas and plays, and my favorite role was Madea in Madea the Greek tragedy. It was one of my first introductions into just acting without singing. What's your fantasy role (a role you haven't played but want to)?
Aida in Aida and Persephone in Hadestown. I would also love to play The Witch in Into the Woods and the Beggar Woman in Sweeny Todd. Is it intimidating or is there extra pressure playing such an icon?
worldwide on CD, both online and in stores. The CD features a 20-page booklet, which includes liner notes, synopsis, production and studio photography. The album was recorded in February 2019 at Angel Studios and RAK Studios, produced by the show's Music Supervisor Nicholas Skilbeck and Kurt Deutsch, and co-produced by Tom Kelly. To download or stream the album, or order the CD, please visit Ghostlightrecords.lnk.to/riverdeeptinaturnermusical. When she was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in October, 2021, Tina Turner became one of only three women in the institution's history to be inducted twice (she was initially inducted in 1991, alongside Ike Turner). It was a pleasure to sit down with Paris Lewis (Tina) for this exclusive Hotspots interview.
Paris Lewis
Yes, and yes. It can be really intimidating but it can also be cool….to do what you know you can do and were chosen to do. Is it hard being on the road all the time?
Yes, it's incredibly hard as you miss a lot of life and you kind of feel forgotten sometimes. I miss out on major life events.
How well do you and your castmates get along?
We get along very well. I have been touring for a couple of years now, so I know how to do this.
You are part of the LGBTQ+ community, are you single or taken?
I am in a relationship.
What makes your partner the perfect person for you?
She was my high school sweetheart and my first ever girlfriend when I was 13 years old, and we found our way back to each other years later. We hold space for each other that allows us to grow and allows us to make mistakes. She always chooses me and supports every facet of my life and I do the same for her.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Grounded, mysterious, and everchanging.
What do you do for fun?
I love to people watch, it's one of my favorite past times. I also like to watch reality TV as people are crazy and it makes me feel saner. I also love to read, do outdoor activities, bowl and sleep.
“
We hold space for each other that allows us to grow and allows us to make mistakes. She always chooses me and supports every facet of my life and I do the same for her.”
What should our readers expect from this touring company of, “Tina: The Musical”?
This show is a jam packed thrill ride of Tina's love, loss, triumph, but also grace. All the beauty that was Tina is encompassed in this show.
For more information on Paris, follow her at: Q/Renaissancewoman_
