Dancing with the Stars' producers Bobby Blair and Brian Neal. They were LGBT media pioneers who owned Buzz and ½ of Jump On Mark’s List and Mark Magazine, Guy Magazine locally. They owned Multimedia Platforms which they then took public and bought Fun Maps, Next Magazine, and Frontiers magazine to create the largest
Print media company in the United States. LGBTQ 100 – there was a financial product which gave people a road map where they could invest in their principles and core values with companies that care about them. Congressman Barney Frank, and Athletes Billy Bean and Martina Navratilova joined me in showcasing that
these companies were really supporting our communities and we proved that those companies were outperforming the market by 3+%. With that benchmark we launched the first ever exchange traded fund, and for the first time on the Nasdaq the symbol was LGBT.
How did the idea of Dancing with the Stars come about?
We were thinking how we could bring community leaders, entrepreneurs, and the political world all together in one night and celebrate with local entertainers. So, we came up with the idea that business owners could partner with an entertainer and dance with them for charity. Originally it was a great benefit for our charity, The Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation, and Dancing with the Stars South Florida was born.
Was it everything you expected it to be?
Yes, it really became an epic event here in South Florida, and it was so fun and exciting to bring leaders and entertainers together in one night. It also brought local people out to volunteer or watch the show. It really was a big community event. The foundation benefited many people who then would come out and support the cause in future years.
How did it change over the years?
It changed because people started taking the competition very seriously. From the first year to year 3, people were getting very serious about winning. We sold out every year, it was standing room only.
Why did it end?
We moved to LA when we purchased Frontiers Magazine, and we were too far away to run the event. In addition, Brian was so hands on with the recipients and he couldn't do that in California.
What made you move back to South Florida ten years later?
My great friend and business partner Robert DeBenedictis, who had been incredibly supportive of us for 20 years passed away, and he left an incredible estate to his partner Khan, and Khan reached out to me on Christmas this past year and wanted us to come help. Now our job is to run and manage all the businesses in Florida and New York to keep Bobs Legacy alive.
“It gets the community to come together and to be proud of who they are. To support such a tremendous event by donating 100% of the proceeds is exactly what we are excited about.”

Brians has wanted to move back here for awhile as this is home to them, as a matter-of-fact Bobby was born in Fort Lauderdale. Brian has moved forward in his commercial real estate career and thought South Florida would be amazing for him. In addition, he wanted to restart his foundation again.
Are you excited to be bringing Dancing With The Stars South Florida back?
It is the most exciting thing that we have been apart of since I came up with the idea that we would own LGBTQ publications. It's special to us because we can now network with Hotspots, Happening Out, OUTsfl and the welcome home has been so incredible. We really appreciate the support of the local media.
Why did you decide to have Stonewall Street Festival and Parade be the bene ciaries this year?
Because of our tremendous respect for the Wilton Manors Entertainment Group and Jeff Sterling who is the CEO. We have had a very special relationship for almost 2 decades and I am thrilled that he does such a fantastic job. Stonewall was our number one choice, and we want to support this tremendous event. Pride gives the community hope especially in this political climate we are experiencing here in Florida. It gets the community to come together and to be proud of who they are. To support such a tremendous event by donating 100% of the proceeds is exactly what we are excited about. What does the future hold for the 2 of you?
In November we are celebrating 23 years together and we are planning on doing more events to bring additional positive impact to this community that we serve and love.

Psychic Medium Roy Tomko on Life, Love and the In-Between
By Ben Nelson
Roy Tomko grew up in New Jersey and has sensed the spirit world for as long as he can remember. “My earliest memory of seeing spirit was around three or four years old,” he explains. “I started to see a spirit of a man lingering around my parent's house. I would tell my parents, and at first, they assumed it was an imaginary friend, but with time they grew to understand that it was something more.”
Spirit continued to make itself known throughout his adolescent life, stepping in and out as Roy grew. “My friends would ask me for my opinion or advice and early on, I wasn't aware that what I was doing was giving psychic predictions. It only became evident as my intuitive advice would come to happen.”
Today, Roy connects with spirit in-person and through Zoom and other video call methods. He enjoys being able to validate a loved one's existence and provide insight on major shifts in life like buying a

new home, finding romance or considering a career change. His main objective, however, is that every reading help to rejuvenate an individual and maybe even reawaken them.
Sure, he has his skeptics, but the selfprofessed medium has a 5-month wait for those seeking his insights. “There is nothing more powerful than helping people find peace, closure and happiness,” he reflects. “Hope and positivity, and the assurance that our loved ones are around us, is what helps us to move forward.”
We caught up with Roy Tomko to learn more about his gift and his process.
Is there a God and who is she?
I refer to God in my own special way. Some may call it God, others might say “the universe”. I believe we each have our own connection and relationship to our higher power.
Do you believe in heaven and hell?
Again, it's difficult to put a label on it. I believe in alternate vibrational plains that are all around us. These plains are where I connect with Spirit.
Do you see or just hear Spirit?
When I was younger, I was able to see Spirit very clearly, and I still do from time to time. I
“...I believe we are all intuitive and have the ability to sense feelings, intuitive hits, or even see signs from loved ones.”
sometimes get scents, and can hear sounds that represent Spirit. Most often, I communicate with Spirit through what is called Claircognizance. It's a clear knowing. What are you experiencing during the process?
The best way I can explain it is Spirit pours information into my mind and guides me to say what needs to be said.
What are the most common messages that you receive from Spirit?
Every reading is unique to the individual. I often tell people that readings are like snowflakes; no two are alike. However, Spirit typically wants to let their loved ones know they are ok and at peace. They want to express their love and provide healing closure. I sometimes hear apologies or the feeling of regret from Spirit.
In recent readings, you have said that for most people, 2024 will be a year of abundance. 2024 has been marked spiritually by the number 8. The sum of all of the numbers in 2024 add up to 8. The number 8 angel signifies material wealth, financial abundance, and infinite energy. Spiritually, it means that our future goals, whatever they may be, are well within reach. You may be experiencing this already, but if it hasn't happened for you yet, prepare for a beautiful year of abundance in all areas of your life as we move through the year. Is there anything we can do to ensure that we receive all that the universe has to offer in 2024?
Absolutely! I encourage everyone to set your intentions, do your affirmations, and create your manifestations. Continue to release what doesn't serve you so you can

receive and be open to what does. What are signs we should look out for?
Some signs that loved ones are around are butterflies, birds, coins, dollar bills, a feather, or even a specific scent of a flower or cigar. Signs are unique and individual to each person and their loved ones. How can we know if spirit approves of the person we are dating?
For validation on specific questions, I advise my clients to give Spirit a sign that you feel connected to. For example, an eagle. Ask your guides to show you an eagle - whether on TV or in a magazine, or flying above - within a set time frame. If you see the sign, then you know your answer. However, keep in mind that, at the end of the day, you have to do what is best for you and serves your highest and greatest good. That means following your own intuition.
Can any ordinary person cultivate this kind of sensitivity?
I believe we are all intuitive and have the ability to sense feelings, intuitive hits, or even see signs from loved ones. Some of us are more open to Spirit than others and it comes easier. However, I think for most people, if you can surrender and allow yourself to feel, hear, see, and believe, you can connect with Spirit around you.
What do you wish we knew more about our dead loved ones and death?
Our loved ones are always around and here for us. Whether our connection with them was strong on earth or not, Spirit wants to support loved ones. They want to protect us and help us achieve happiness and joy.
Connecting with Spirit must be draining for your soul. Why do you do it?
Readings can be energetically exhausting on occasion, but this is what I was meant to do, and I am grateful every day to serve Spirit
and their loved ones.
How would someone get in touch with you for a reading?
You can book a reading with me directly on my website or through Instagram. I am currently booking for mid-October 2024.

uu Spring Pops!
Indie Gay Musicians Push to Get Their Sounds Heard in This Season of Major Pop Releases
By Jimmy Newsum
66 | HotspotsMagazine.com
Spring isn't traditionally known as a big time for new music releases, but this season's offerings are bigger and better than ever. A batch of major A-listers are delivering highly anticipated albums: from the Queen Bee's Cowboy Carter and Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department to new music from Dua Lipa, Normani, Billie Eilish, and, of course, Ariana Grande's Eternal Sunshine.
It can be tough for an indie musician to get their tunes heard in such a crowded field, but these are the gay artists and their new tracks that are breaking through the noise. And no, we're not only talking dance floor music! These performers are serving hits in pop, jazz, and even country music, ya'll.
1. Wils • “Dancing Lights”
The latest - and last! - release from the Singapore pop singing sensation is an uplifting dance track that tackles issues of self-esteem and insecurity and promotes a message of self-empowerment and embracing inner beauty. It presents a moodier and more subdued hue than “Open Up Babe” and past songs from the artist, but Wils' use of vocal effects and vintage synths really drive the song's powerful message home. “Dancing Lights” is extremely raw, and depicts Wils as a vulnerable, relatable individual who is finally
emerging from a dark hole of depression. Along with the single, the accompanying visual captures the essence of grief and its final stage of acceptance. Wils became famous ten years ago for being the world's first openly gay Chinese pop singer. “Dancing Lights” is a stunning finale from an artist who has announced this will be his final music release.
2. Johnny Bloom • “Roarin' 20s”
So Fierce Music/The Orchard/Sony Music
Young Johnny Bloom is ushering in a new age of jazz with this unconventional diddy inspired by music from the early and midtwentieth century. Think Ella Fitzgerald
and Marvin Gaye meets Miley Cyrus, and Adam Lambert. “Roarin' 20s” harkens back to a post-war era when young people were dancing to the Charleston and the Shimmy. Bloom gives his track a modern twist. The song is fun and flirty, with an attention-grabbing swing that mixes elements of blues, ragtime, marching music and African folk rhythm. An impressive debut.
3. Jace M and Toy Armada (featuring Joey Diamond)
“Waiting for Tonight” • Queen House Music
Dance music producers Jace M and Toy Armada are putting their own spin on Jennifer Lopez's club-ready 1999 track, with the help of out artist Joey Diamond.
HotspotsMagazine.com | 67
Few are aware that Lopez's version was also a cover. The song was originally released by girl group 3rd Party. JLo upped the tempo to 125 BPM; Jace M and Toy Armada crank up the energy even higher by combining Diamond's exuberant vocals with lots of heavy drums and full synths. This celebratory staple is the perfect happy antidote for all of the anxiety many of us are feeling over the pending national elections. It is destined to be a song of the summer.
4. Tom Goss • “Not My Problem”
The pop/rock banger tells the true-life story of Tom's five-year relationship with a con man who is now serving time in prison. It is
a bit angstier than “Nerdy Bear” and Tom's other popular tracks. “Not My Problem” acknowledges the heartache and pain Goss experienced after learning the truth about his ex; but, in true Tom Goss style, the singer manages to find a bright spot in the experience and the song is lively and yes, playful. Even more fun is its accompanying music video that stars drag queen Meatball as an overly amorous prison guard. Another home run for Tom Goss.
5. Brian Falduto • “Why'd You Come in Here Lookin' Like That?”
Brian Falduto's remake of Dolly Parton's "Why'd You Come in Here Lookin' Like That" is the adorable out singer at his sassiest and most irresistible. The song is fast-paced, and raucous, just like Dolly's.
Her version objectified cowboys in ways they weren't used to at the time, and Falduto's remake does too, but in a more modern way that is sure to keep the strappin' fellers on their toes.
Accompanying the song is a music video that features Dan Amboyer from Younger and Uncoupled as a rugged Marlboro man. He plays the scoundrel that has the audacity to come into the honky tonk lookin' like that and let's just say that Brian Falduto won't be the only one hankering to saddle up on him.

MISTR, Know for Its Free Online PrEP and Long-Term HIV Care Now
Prescribing DoxyPEP
MISTR, the largest telemedicine provider offering free online PrEP and long-term HIV care in all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico, is now prescribing Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (DoxyPEP), an antibiotic that reduces bacterial STIs, including gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis. Patients can now use MISTR's seamless telehealth platform to receive DoxyPEP online for free.
disproportionately affected.
“Despite an ongoing STI epidemic affecting the LGBTQ+ community, there are few resources available for this underserved, vulnerable community to get the preventative medication they need,” said Tristan Schukraft, CEO and Founder of MISTR. “I'm proud that MISTR is democratizing access to PrEP, HIV Care, and now DoxyPEP.”
With this launch, MISTR plans to further solve the issue of access and adherence to PrEP and HIV care, and now offers patients access to postexposure care, in addition to their existing preventive and long-term HIV treatment options, which include PrEP and antiretroviral therapy (ART). This comes at a time when the rate of STIs continue to rise - in 2022, more than 2.5 million cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia were reported in the U.S; of that population, gay and bisexual men are
DoxyPEP has already shown promising results in reducing the rates of certain STIs. An NIH-funded study published by the New England Journal of Medicine in April 2023 found that doxycycline as post-exposure prophylaxis, now known as DoxyPEP, reduced syphilis by 87%, chlamydia by 88%, and gonorrhea by 55% in individuals taking HIV PrEP, and reduced syphilis by 77%, chlamydia by 74% and gonorrhea by 57% in people living with HIV. Now MISTR patients can receive DoxyPEP, in addition to their PrEP or HIV care medications.
This launch comes on the heels of immense growth for MISTR, with over 300,000 patients served. The company has plans to further expand their product portfolio in 2024 and open the doors to their MISTR storefronts. To learn more about MISTR, visit mistr.com.

'QUEER' GETS THE LUCA GUADAGNINO TREATMENT WITH DANIEL CRAIG
Iconic Beat Generation author William S. Burroughs, whose novel “Naked Lunch” turned millions of young people into fans of experimental fiction, wrote a book called “Queer” in the early 1950s. Then it sat, waiting to be published, for 30-plus more years. And though “Lunch” got a film adaptation from David Cronenberg in the '90s, “Queer” had to wait its turn once again. Now Luca Guadagnino, whose horny tennis love triangle “Challengers” is going to make everyone who watches
it bisexual, has taken the Burroughs short novel and cast Daniel Craig in the lead of an intergenerational romance. The former James Bond stars as a man in Mexico City in the 1940s who becomes infatuated with a younger man played by “Love, Simon” actor Drew Starkey. Costarring British Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread”), Wes Anderson regular Jason Schwartzman, and Henry Zaga (“The Ministry of
Ungentlemanly Warfare”), “Queer” is expected to hit international film festivals later this year for a probable 2025 theatrical release. Bring your Daddy.
'Emilia Perez' is the trans musical crime comedy you' ve been waiting for

fest this May with a new film, the musical crime-comedy “Emilia Perez.” It' s got some big names attached, stars like Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and Edgar Ramírez. But its lead, Spanish trans actress Karla Sofia Gascón, will be new to audiences who haven't watched recent Spanish-language telenovelas, some of which she appeared in prior to her public transition. Gascón stars in the title role as the leader of a drug cartel who begins gender transition, singing all the way, supported by pop star Gomez, with an original score of songs from French musician Camille Dalmais. Sound intriguing? Well, if you can 't make it over to France, it should wind up in North American arthouses in the not-too-distant future.
to be closeted than out and proud. But that was then, and today queer comedians are everywhere, no longer forced to keep quiet. Enter “Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution,” from writer-director Page Hurwitz, a documentary for Netflix that features a roster of comedy stars too long to list here, but includes Tig Notaro, Wanda Sykes, Suzy Izzard, Lily Tomlin, Todd Glass, Sandra Bernhard, Fortune Feimster, Hannah Gadsby, Rosie O 'Donnell, Margaret Cho, Bob the Drag Queen, Trixie Mattel and Guy Branum to name a few handfuls. The film charts the rise of LGBTQ+ visibility that went hand-in-hand with a gradually more open playing field in the world of comed y, where queer people have always existed but whose best punchlines were too often straightwashed. The doc drops on June 18, so you can celebrate Pride on your couch and laugh off that sunburn you got at the parade.

Liza Minnelli is a 78year-old living legend and heir to the queer icon status earned by her mother, Judy Garland, as well as that of her father, “Meet Me in St. Louis” director Vincente Minnelli. Therefore, it ' s well past time for the

Johnny McGovern is Gay AF as the host of Hey
Qween!
and his dishy new podcast show
By Larry Olsen
Photo @ jonnymcgovernisyourdaddy
Jonny McGovern's career in entertainment launched twenty years ago with Dirty Gay Hits, his collection of gay themed songs that received over five million downloads before YouTube even existed. It caught the eye of Rosie O'Donnell, who cast McGovern as a lead player on her comedy show, The Big Gay Sketch Show alongside Oscar nominee Coleman Domingo and SNL's Kate McKinnon.
Today, Jonny McGovern is best known for his popular television shows including GoGo for the Gold (second season streaming now on OUTtv) and Hey Qween!, his talk show streaming new episodes now, exclusively on World of Wonder's SVOD platform WOW Presents Plus. For even more gay laughs and hijinks, you can catch him in Jonny McGovern is Gay AF, the comedian's new weekly podcast show where he puts a homo spin on all of the latest celeb news. We spoke with Jonny McGovern from his home in LA.

What is it like to be gay AF in Hollywood today?
There's never been a better time to be gay AF!
Gay comedians are hot right now! There's Fortune Feimster, Matteo Lane, Tig Notaro, Bob the Drag Queen… the list goes on and on.
Yes, it's great. I think apps like TikTok have really helped make this possible. They take a lot of the gatekeeping away. It's no longer some straight person telling you what you can and cannot talk about. The audience can decide for themselves what they find is funny, and when something or someone gets a big reaction from a digital audience, comedy clubs and the industry take notice. Were you always gay AF?
I may have tried to hide it in my younger years, but when I stopped trying to be what society told me was proper and started fully expressing my true self is when I started to make a name for myself. What inspired you to launch your podcast, Jonny McGovern is Gay AF?
I started podcasting in 2006 and my podcast audience has been my most devoted audience. I have people that have been riding with me for almost twenty years and that's special.
Gay Pimpin' was a real pioneer in LGBTQ podcasting!
We were the first gay show to crack the top 10 of iTunes podcasts.
How is Jonny McGovern is Gay AF different from Gay Pimpin '?
Spiritually, they are both from the same place. Format wise, they are different. Gay Pimpin' was a snapshot of my life at the time with a very large group of friends on the mic with me. Gay AF is more intimate. It's created to be like you, as the listener, are sitting down with me one on one to gossip, throw shade, kiki about which OnlyFans accounts are good and which are not worth our coins. We break down the stories of the day and deep dive into DL gay celebrity scandals and blind items. Where do you nd the topics?
I keep a list of everything that I see that stands out as “of homosexual interest” on social media, in magazines, movies, TV, and music. From diva rap battles like Nicki vs. Megan to the gay couple airport meltdown to Diddy's alleged gay sex parties; no topic is off limits!
How did your podcast shows prepare you for Hey Qween!?
I was working in nightlife while recording The Gay Pimpin' shows and I spent a lot of time with drag queens and ballroom legends. It was a natural evolution to make Hey Qween! a place where queens share their journeys.
This season, the show moved to Wow Presents Plus!
HotspotsMagazine.com | 91
We had access like never before to the world's top queens! We were the first sit down TV interview for the eliminated queens of season 16 of RuPaul's Drag Race, so we got the tea piping hot! Not only did I have some of Drag Race's Emmy winning producers working with me on the show, but we were also able to get call-ins from Drag Race legends and we regularly featured actual iconic props from the season. It felt great to be in the eye of the storm and on the mother ship of WOW. Was there anything you were not allowed to ask an eliminated queen?
Not really, but I never wanted to ask anything that was going to make anyone feel or look bad. These queens are our homegrown stars and I'm about celebrating them.
No doubt the late Lady Red Couture is smiling down from heaven at your success. It's bittersweet to have finally gotten to this place that we always dreamed of traveling
together and not have Lady Red beside me. She's always with me in spirit and I keep a candle with her picture on it next to me on my desk so she's always represented. I miss her and I know she's up in heaven cheering me on.
Speaking of legendary angels, what would Dorian Corey or Pepper LaBeija think of the state of LGBTQ+ representation in entertainment today?
Paris is Burning and all of the people in that movie have been extremely inspirational to me. I would hope they would love it and be huge TikTok stars, especially Dorian Corey who I quote to this day!
Favorite Dorian Corey quote?
That's easy. If you shoot an arrow and it goes real high, hooray for you.

Kathy Griffin has been through even more than you probably know. She lost a lung to cancer, lost her mother, and lost many of her close friends. In 2020, the same year her beloved mom Maggie died, she attempted suicide. All the while, she was being investigated by the Department of Justice for a viral 2017 photo that depicted her holding up a severed model head covered in fake blood that resembled Donald Trump, resulting in a career-dismantling fallout. She is also now in the middle of a divorce.
So much has happened to Griffin in just the last seven years that it's easy for something like her three-year-old court battle with Tennessee resident Samuel Johnson to slip under the radar, which Griffin says it has. The comedian is being sued by Johnson, who is blaming Griffin for losing his CEO-level job after she tagged his employer in a post on X, formerly Twitter, in response to his recorded altercation with a teenage boy in downtown Franklin who he called “disgusting” for wearing a long red dress to prom in 2021, reports The Tennessean.
On her first tour in six years, aptly titled “My Life on the PTSD List,” Griffin isn't just giving play-by-plays on Paris Hilton and her vacation gone awry with Sia — she's using her stage to get people to vote. Because if anyone knows that the stakes are high this year, it's her.
How are you doing, Kathy?
I have PTSD, Chris. Complex PTSD, which I thought was only for combat veterans. Holy shit, I can't believe it… I was diagnosed by my oncologist and my psychiatrist, and I've got to laugh about it, because I'm somebody that runs around on stage making jokes about the Kardashians, and now, I've got this crazy diagnosis. I decided to make the show about it, because once again, like oh so many things that have happened to me in the last six years, I just did not think it would happen. I start the show with the laundry list. Are you ready? Yeah, give it to me.
Because people want to know, "Come on, how did you get complex PTSD? You're exaggerating, blah, blah, blah," which is also always so pleasant, when people are like, "You're lying." Obviously, the Trump thing started six and a half years ago. I was investigated by the Department of Justice, which seriously considered charging me with conspiracy to assassinate the President of the United States — it's never happened in the history of this nation to a comedian. No-fly list, not able to tour, my own industry turning its back on me. Most of my friends turning their backs on me permanently, by the way. And then what do I do? Leave it to me to be 57 years old and then become addicted to fucking

prescription pills, like “Valley of the Dolls,” and I was Neely O'Hara. Well, naturally, I wanted to be Neely O'Hara, but I was probably more like Susan Hayward. I love that you get that reference. I was ripping my wig off in the bathroom and ready for a cat fight. Then, of course, I have to get into recovery, but before that, I tried to take my life.
I know it sounds dark, because what isn't these days, but I even talk about that in the show. I won't tell you what I did, but the way I tried to take my life was so over the top that I actually just started cracking up. I do it in front of the audience, and they actually laugh. The reason I do that is because I firmly believe truly, at your lowest, darkest moment, you have to somehow find the humor. It's there. It's there, and sometimes, it's dark as f*ck. Then I get sober, and a year after I'm sober, I get diagnosed with lung cancer, even though I never smoked, which my dear departed mother Maggie would call the luck of the Irish, which means bad luck. By the way, Maggie is in heaven having a box of wine, or Two Buck

Chuck, with the Lord Jesus. She died during that period as well. Then I was on a 5150 psych hold, which was crazy. And then, during my lung cancer surgery, they took out half of my left lung. Chris, I don't like how you're flaunting your two lungs in my face right now. I think it's rude. During this period in which you felt abandoned by some people who were really close to you, did you at least feel like your gay friends were standing by you as they have in the past?
You saw Anderson [Cooper] and Andy [Cohen] take my [New Year's Eve] gig. You saw it. But you've had so many close LGBTQ+ people in your life. Did they rally around you? Did you feel loved and supported by close queer friends and your queer fan community?
No. The power gays absolutely abandoned me, and I say that with such a heavy heart. I'm going to try not to cry. For example, I would say the civilian gays 100% rallied around me. My friends that aren't in the business who are gay were appalled, and they buoyed me, and they held me up, and they were my friends, and I owe them for the rest of my life. But the power gays in Hollywood, the ones who could have lifted a finger, the ones who could have just given me five lines in anything, the ones who could have put me in just a little part in a TV show or a movie or directed a comedy special or something, anything, they did nothing. Honey, I showed up and hosted every free charity event. I've had so many legal issues since this MAGA thing. I

have a case in Tennessee federal court right now, and I'm asking for your help, because I need the gay community to support me. I don't think they know I'm fighting this fight, and I'm out there flapping in the wind by myself. Now, there's a video, you can look it up. Write this down: Samuel Johnson. If you look up “Kathy Griffin, Samuel Johnson,” this is a CEO, and the video went viral. You probably saw it. He's a MAGA guy that was harassing two trans kids at their prom photo shoot. One of the boys was wearing a red dress, and he was bothering them. I tweeted about it after it had already gone viral on TikTok. I wasn't even on TikTok at the time; I am now, but I wasn't then. It had already been seen by millions of people, and millions of people said he should be fired. Then I said he should be fired. He got fired, and he's suing me. He goes on Newsmax, and he goes on Fox, and says, "I'm going to be the one to drag Kathy Griffin to Tennessee federal court, and let's see how she does with her Hollywood elite attitude in a Tennessee witness box." Nobody's helping me. I've been fighting this case for three years by myself. Thirty years of performing and showing up at [LGBTQ+] events, and I'm left all alone, and I don't know why. Lambda Legal, anybody? ACLU said, "No, we don't want to help you. We don't care." I said, "This is just me fighting for these two kids." They
were minors being harassed at their prom photo shoot in a hotel lobby. Let me tell you, if I lose this case, it has real repercussions for anybody posting about anybody who's harassing gay people. If I lose this case, it has real repercussions for the gay community. This isn't about me. I'm not fighting for me. I could have said nothing, but I'm a real ally, and I've been one since I was in grade school, for Christ's sake. I need people to know I'm fighting this fight, because this guy is out there shooting his mouth off. What you've gone through in the last seven years, and are currently going through, is a real testament to your resilience and survival. That's what I want it to be. I don't mean to come off as woe is me, and honestly, that's why I do make the show funny. I even talk about all my wacky treatments that I get for the PTSD. After this, I'm having Kundalini yoga, and I don't even know what the fuck that is. I don't know if Kundalini is a person, if I should meet him or her, but I just fucking do it. I get that cupping — remember when Gwyneth Paltrow was getting those fucking scars on her back? Well, I do that shit, I don't even think it works. I get acupuncture, I don't even think it works. I talk about all of it in the show, because I think in a way, our country is going through a bit of a PTSD.
“...if Trump gets reelected, not only kiss marriage goodbye, it's going to be real fucking hard to be an out gay person in Trump's America. There's my rant.”
Let's face it, Covid was not our finest moment. We did not handle that well. I'm going to get serious for one more minute, which is, these shows are so important to me, and having gay people show up to my shows, because I do feel, and you know this, your civil rights are
photo: facebook.com/kathygriffin HotspotsMagazine.com | 115
being rolled back. The Supreme Court is now illegitimate. I want to make gay people laugh, and I want to stand there and go, "I'm OK." I might have a bit of an altered voice, and it sounds like I have a cough, but honestly, I'm not in one bit of pain. My voice is just like this now, and the headset mic really helps a lot. Don't be fooled. I do a rant every show, and my agents don't like that I do it, but I don't care. I say, "Gays, remember, elections are not just every four years, or every two years. They are every year, and often, the downballot is more important than the presidential. Go to your gay organization that you trust, and they'll do the work for you, but get your voter guides, because the sheriff matters, the judges matter, the congressman matters, the local senators matter, the U.S. senators matter."
The great Gloria Steinem… I spoke to her recently, and I'm bragging, but I did. She said, "You tell your gays, this is it. This is it." As you know, your own civil rights, if Trump gets reelected, not only kiss marriage goodbye, it's going to be real f*cking hard to be an out gay person in Trump's America. There's my rant. I'll go back to the funny, but I just think, because I'm talking to you, I just want you to tell, especially the young gays that think their vote doesn't matter, your vote matters even if you live in a blue state.
Are you really doing two hour shows on this tour?
The other night in Phoenix, I accidentally did two hours and 20 minutes. Don't be late. Whatever time the show starts, that's when I start, and I do two hours if I'm a good girl, and I do two hours and 20 if I'm a bad girl.
How do you feel comedy can serve as a tool for LGBTQ+ advocacy and visibility in this climate?
Look, the greatest compliment that I get, and I get this a lot and it really makes my heart swell with love, is — I can't tell you how many gays and lesbians say, "I came out while watching 'My Life on the D-List.'”
Something about that show. I didn't say it was a gay show, because... it's like my mom and dad were activists in their way without coming out and saying it. My mom and dad, they literally went to gay bars for happy hour, because as my mom would say, "The gay bars had the best free appetizers." They just were always around gay people, and accepting of gay people. It wasn't like the reality shows today, where people are fighting. It was really a comedic reality show. It didn't hit you over the head with a hammer, but for some reason, lots and lots of people have come up to me over the years, saying, "There was
photos: facebook.com/kathygriffin 116 | HotspotsMagazine.com
something about the humor of that show that made me feel safe enough to tell my mom or dad that I'm gay." I think the humor, when couched in a certain way, sometimes it can be humor with a little activism thrown in. Sometimes I write stuff that's just shallow.
I don't even mention Trump in my new show. Newsflash: I don't even mention him. It's not that I'm scared to, but I made a whole movie about it, called “Kathy Griffin: A Hell of a Story.” But I have a great story about going to Paris Hilton's Christmas party, so there's lots of celeb gossip. I have a great story about going on vacation with Sia, where everything went wrong. It was like Lucy and Ethel take Mexico. I think just getting people to be around one another, because as I get older, it's funny, my audience has
“Sometimes it's the simple act of gay people and straight people just laughing together that creates a bridge. I know that sounds silly, and philosophical, but it's true. Laughter is a uni er.”
become gay guys, lesbians, straight women, and also, I'm getting more hetero couples. They're a little older, but that's OK, because I love it when I'll have a heterosexual guy say to me after a show, "Man, I didn't think I knew any gay people, but I'm sitting here in the audience, and now I feel like I know a thousand gay people." And I always say, "You do." Sometimes it's the simple act of gay people and straight people just laughing together that creates a bridge. I know that sounds silly, and philosophical, but it's true. Laughter is a unifier. Look, people don't know this, but I have plenty of Republican friends. I just saw George Conway last week. I teased him about being a double agent, but we're friends. Kathy and Rick Hilton, I've known them for years. They go to Mar-a-Lago. I

wish they wouldn't. We have a two-party system, and we should. There's ways to remind people that we're going to get through this crazy phase. By the way, for shits and giggles, I'll tell you, I've never seen anything like it in my whole career, as divided as the country is. We need the laughs. We need to laugh right in its face, but we also need to gossip about Paris Hilton.
It was recently announced that you'll be playing Carnegie Hall again and breaking a signi cant record in the process.
For the sixth time. I'm so thrilled. What would Joan Rivers say?
Joan would be my biggest supporter because Joan and I were tied for the record of the only single female comedian who played Carnegie by themselves, five times in a row. I matched Joan's record, and now I get to break our record. I miss her every day, and I think of her all the time. I learned so much from her!
