Are you considering a low-stress, easy summer vacation? How about a staycation? We are fortunate to live where most people vacation and there are many areas to explore. And who wouldn't want to avoid airport crowds? Florida is a giant state, and each part has a different vibe. Ellen and Einbinder Prep Stand-Up Specials

Two queer comedians, two specials, the first for one, the stated last for the other. Ellen DeGeneres, after the end of her daytime talk show, and following up her 2018 Netflix stand-up special, “Relatable,” will return to the streaming platform sometime later this year with an as-yetunnamed special that she says will be her last. She’s a lesbian media pioneer and a comedy legend, so it’s queer law that we watch.

Follow along, because the queer hook here is that it' s a musical, and we as a people tend to enjoy those. Nick Vallelonga, Oscar-winning screenwriter and producer of “Green Book,” has another film coming, “That's Amore!,” a musical loosely based on the beloved 1955 Ernest Borgnine-starring “Marty.” It'll star lifelong musical vet John Travolta alongside Katherine Heigl (our favorite vaping villain from the good-bad

2017 thriller “Unforgettable”) as a pair who think their chances at love have passed them by, only to discover they might be right for each other. It co-stars Christopher Walken, “Rocky” legend Talia Shire, William Fichtner, D.B. Sweeney and “Sopranos” alum Drea de Matteo. They've also recorded some songs, but that' s everything we know right

And to bait us more, she says she’ll talk about “it” — the controversy over an allegedly toxic workplace culture on her show — and everything else. Not to be missed. Meanwhile, “Hannah Einbinder: Everything Must Go,” the first-ever stand-up special from the career-ascendant bisexual “Hacks” star, recorded last month in Los Angeles, is taking its first bow at June’s Tribeca Film Festival before streaming on Max later this

Miramax (yep, they still exist) is working with the BBC on what's being described as a high-profile TV series. The original film, which starred dozens of well-known names including Sophia Loren,

year. Call it passing the queer torch. We can’t wait.

Finding ‘Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes’

Elizabeth Taylor lived the word “ally.” Along with other towering 20th-century women like Judy Garland, Taylor was a friend to the LGBTQ+ community, and in the 1980s she became a fierce advocate for people living with HIV/ AIDS. She’s also one of the most well-documented

actresses who ever lived, so you might think there’s nothing left to learn. But “Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes,” from documentary filmmaker Nanette Burstein (“Hillary,” “American Teen”) dives deeply into Taylor’s personal archives and over 70 hours of previously unheard audio interviews, turning her into the film’s guide and narrator as she talks about her career, her marriages and everything else. Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, the film will drop on HBO and Max in August.

A

Supremes ‘All-You-Can-Eat’ buffet

“The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat,” from queer writer-director Tina Mabry, is not a film about the legendary girl group, Motown or Diana Ross. Instead, the upcoming Hulu/Searchlight Pictures project — based on Edward Kelsey Moore’s novel of the same name with a script co-written by Cee Marcellus — centers the joy of women’s friendships. Starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Sanaa Lathan and Uzo Aduba, it’s the story of three lifelong friends who call themselves “The Supremes,” and who

find their relationships tested and life directions examined (presumably at the titular diner). There are some men on the menu, too, with co-stars Mekhi Phifer, Julian McMahon, Russell Hornsby and Vondie Curtis-Hall adding support, but the main course here is going to be the surprising twists and turns of women’s lives. Look for it on Hulu to wind up summer on Aug. 23.

Gregg Araki to direct Olivia Wilde in ‘I Want Your Sex’

Don’t let the title confuse you. It’s not a George Michael biopic. Instead, New Queer Cinema icon Gregg Araki (“The Living End,” “Mysterious Skin”) has something on-brand up his sleeve: Olivia Wilde as a sexual Svengali. “I Want Your Sex,”

co-written by Araki and Karley Sciortino (“Slutever,” “Now Apocalypse”) follows provocative artist Erika (Wilde) and her protégé, a young man named Elliot, as she turns him into her sexual muse. What follows, as per the official plot synopsis, is a complicated world of limit-smashing domination, desire, obsession and murder. In other words, the ’90s erotic thriller is back and we couldn’t be happier for the genre to trend all over again. Besides Wilde, the film has yet to lock down a complete cast, but it’s a certainty that sexy roster will show up when shooting begins this summer in Los Angeles.

An iconic chef famous

throughout the world, from

Rome to Miami: THE STORY OF NONNA IRIS AND THE MYTH OF “OSTERIA DA FORTUNATA”

HISTORY

Cooking is a momentary pleasure. You savor it, you feel it and then it remains only in your memories. But there is a way to make the kitchen borderless and timeless: how? Iris, the undisputed queen of carbonara in Rome, explains it to you firsthand: she is in fact a culinary icon who continues to amaze with her 93 years of age.

Since she set foot in the kitchen at just 13 years old, the elderly chef has never stopped cultivating her passion for gastronomy. “I started by washing dishes but then, with my eyes, I stole the secrets of good Ro-man cuisine,” she recalls in an interview with Corriere. “During the war we made Strozzapreti, strictly by hand, and sold them to the laborers. Today she runs eight restaurants, carrying on a culinary legacy begun in the 1920s by her grandmother Fortunata.

The “Da Fortunata” tavern, named in honor of Iris' grandmother, has become a point of reference for traditional Roman cuisine, with carbonara continuing to be the most popular dish. Every day, Iris welcomes famous clients, VIPs, politicians and tourists, all of whom have in common

being lovers of good food. The chef treats everyone with respect and courtesy. This mood is reflected in the high regard she enjoys among Roman and international customers. Her ability to create an unforgettable experience is what makes her a true legend of Italian cuisine. Iris also personally handles the management of her restaurants, leading with firmness and determination to create a real family team. With four restaurants in Rome, two in Milan, one in Bologna and one in Miami Beach, her brand employs 480 people.

The key to Iris's success lies in her simple but effective philosophy: do only a few things, do them well and always in the same way. Her consistent presence in any of her eight restaurants, from 11am to 7pm, is a tangible sign of her commitment and passion for cooking. In every dish prepared by Iris you can taste the love for tradition and attention to detail. The pasta makers, always in plain sight in the shop window, add visual intrigue and interest, while defining the identity of the brand.

In all of this, Iris's skill goes beyond the simple preparation of dishes: she embodies the values of courtesy, generosity and dedication towards her employees, who she considers an integral part of her large family.

3. Resort Pass resortpass.com

One of the apps I use a lot for a quick “daycation” is Resort Pass. You will find hotels in your selected area that offer day passes, day rooms, spa passes or (my favorite) day cabana rentals at great rates. One hotel I go to a lot is the B Ocean in Fort Lauderdale Beach since its cabana rental includes food/drinks. Some hotels include complimentary or special rate valet parking. When booking, pay attention to cancellation policy as it may vary based on hotel, but most of them are very flexible. Check them out and get to have a special kind of day without overnight staying and the hassle that comes with it. You cannot go wrong with this app.

Cirque du Soleil is Coming Back to South Florida

with one of its bestloved productions, CORTEO, July 11th to 21st at the Amerant Bank Arena

Corteo, the most enchanting arena production from Cirque du Soleil is heading to Sunrise, set to charm audiences. This unique production, directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, first premiered in Montreal in April 2005. Since its creation, the show has amazed over 10 million spectators, in 20 countries, on 4 continents. Corteo will be presented at the Amerant Bank Arena for 12 shows only from July 11th to 21st.

Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.

The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the

ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

In a Cirque du Soleil first, the stage is central in the arena and divides the venue, with each half of the audience facing the other half, giving a unique perspective not only of the show, but also a performer's eye view of the audience. An atmosphere like never seen before in Cirque du Soleil arena shows. The set curtains, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and the central curtains, which were hand painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage. This sets the tone for the poetry of Corteo.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Victor Huusko who is an acrobat in the Paradis Act for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

At what age did you start doing any kind of acrobatics?

I didnt go the gymnastic route, which most people go. I went straight into the Circus from zero. When I was 15 I had a

friend who took me to a lesson, and from that moment, I never left acrobatics.

When did you start taking it seriously?

Immediately for at 16 I applied to professional Circus school. After that it was 3 years of school and I graduated in 2017.

When did you realize Acrobatics can be your career?

I think the moment I heard there is actually a professional school, I knew it was what I wanted to do. It was and is very addictive to me.

How did you get hired by Cirque Du Soleil and how long have you worked for them?

I started in 2022, after the post pandemic launch. Cirque du Soleil contacted me to do the training program they have. They contact people they see potential in but want to work with before they offer them the possibility of being in a show. After training, they offered me a contract.

Tell me about the Paradis Act?

Paradis Act is 4 guys and 5 girls and there are 2 structures. They are back-to-back and we are throwing these girls in the air from one platform to the other. Its quite amazing. Is it hard being on the road all the time?

It has its challenges, but I love travelling. I miss my friends and family, but we have enough breaks to go back home and see everybody.

Victor Huusko

Where is home for you?

Finland.

Describe yourself in 3 words?

Adventurous, fun-loving and social. What do you do for fun?

I like camping a lot as I love nature. I also love going to the gym. Why should our readers come see Corteo?

I think Corteo is a very special show within Cirque du Soleil. Its a beautiful story that packs a punch on how you look at life. Come in and expect to be wowed by acrobatics, but dont be surprised if you also get into your feelings as its a very emotional show. It's a show that a lot of people can relate to.

For more information on Victor you can follow him on Instagram.com/Viccoou

Make Summer Travel with Pets Enjoyable & Seamless

For pet owners, cats and dogs are part of the family, which means when it's time to head out of town this summer, the fourlegged friends get to come along, too.

In fact, a survey conducted by Motel 6 revealed that of 2,000 Americans with summer leisure plans, the vast majority of those traveling with pets this summer (90%)

are bringing their dog, and more than a quarter (31%) are bringing their cat.

While traveling with pets can be a handful, Motel 6 and its Chief Pet Officer, Garfield, fresh off his wild adventure in "The Garfield Movie," offer these tips to help make the journey easier, safer and more fun.

Pack the Essentials: Travel anxiety is real for your fourlegged friends, too, so keep the experience as "pawsitive" as possible by packing your pet's favorite toys and snacks. Don't forget to pack enough food, like lasagna; water; collapsible food and water bowls; and a favorite blanket or bed to provide a sense of familiarity.

Map Out Stops: One in 6 (16%) Americans with summer travel plans are driving to their destinations because they plan to bring their pets along. Travelers should map out breaks, especially when it comes to stopping for meals, in anticipation of traffic and construction. This can help ensure they find spots for bathroom breaks and a chance for active pets to exercise. Even lazier pets can enjoy the fresh air.

Find Pet-Friendly Lodging: As you plan your getaway, look for pet-friendly lodging options with plenty of places to lounge, like Motel 6, which offers travelers and their four-legged friends affordable accommodation, and pets always stay free. This helps take the stress out of researching hotel pet policies and paying additional fees. Traveling pet parents can join the free My6 discount program to receive a minimum of 6% off every stay at locations across the country and access to hundreds of pet and travel benefits.

Travel Safely: If you're planning to travel with your pets, ensure they receive the royal treatment by researching how to safely transport them during the trip. The Humane Society of the United States recommends that cats and dogs travel in their crates or carriers anchored by a seatbelt to prevent them from moving around the car. It's important to never leave your pet alone in the car or place your pet in the front seat because it could lead to injury. Always keep pets on leashes when outside, no matter how well-trained they are, as new surroundings or unexpected noises can startle them. Remember to Have Fun: Travelers' top reasons for bringing their four-legged friends on trips include spending quality time with them and the joy of seeing their pets happy (39%), making new memories with their pets (34%), seeing their pets' reactions to new experiences (32%) and the extra level of companionship pets bring to trips (29%). A few ways to reserve quality time with your pets include dining at pet-friendly restaurants (preferably ones with unlimited cheese), locating nearby green spaces or parks to play, trying new experiences together or going on walks. For those who like a more leisurely travel experience, don't forget to add a quick cat nap with your pet to your schedule.

As you look to map out your summer travel plans, visit Motel6.com to find pet-friendly, affordable lodging.

GALI Swimwear is committed to ethical practices and sustainability. Each piece is crafted in Australia, and artists receive royalties for their designs. Additionally, $1 from every purchase is donated to community projects, supporting the communities that inspire the brand.

The new collection is now available on their website. They invite you to explore the full range and discover the stories woven into each piece.

Artwork Stories

Lukarrara: This Dreaming is associated with a place called Jaralypari, north of Yuendumu. 'Lukarrara' [desert fringe-rush] is a grass with an edible seed. The seeds are traditionally ground

on a 'ngatinyanu' [large stone] with a 'ngalikirri' [smaller stone] to make flour. This flour is mixed with 'ngapa' [water] to make damper cakes, which are cooked and eaten.

In Traditional Warlpiri paintings, iconography is used to represent the Jukurrpa [Dreaming]. In Pauline's painting, 'U' shapes can depict the Karnta [women] collecting 'lukarrara'.

Straight lines are used to portray seeds that fall to the ground, which are collected by women using their 'parrajas' [wooden food carriers] and 'karlangu' [digging sticks].

Banma: This artwork is associated with the land, sea, and skies of the Worimi Aboriginal people on the east coast of Australia. In Aboriginal culture, the skyscape was believed to be a reflection of the land and waterways that fell beneath it.

In this artwork, the vibrant 'waves' of color are symbolic of the connection between the aerial, aquatic, and terrestrial plains. The bright purples,

“Each piece is crafted in Australia, and artists receive royalties for their designs.”

blues, and greens represent the balanced peace and tranquility associated with this connection. The shifting thickness of each wave speaks to the constant ebbs and flows of energy between Worimi country and the heavens.

Barrangaa “This artwork is associated with the land, sea, and skies of the Worimi Aboriginal people on the east coast of Australia. In Aboriginal culture, the

skyscape was believed to be a reflection of the land and waterways that fell beneath it.”

In this artwork, the vibrant 'waves' of color are symbolic of the connection between the aerial, aquatic, and terrestrial plains. The cheerful yellows, pinks, oranges, and reds are reflective of this ever-changing connection as the sun in the afternoon sky sets for the evening. The shifting thickness of each wave speaks to the constant ebbs and flows of energy between Worimi country and the heavens.

Ngatjung “This artwork is associated with the land, sea, and skies of the Worimi Aboriginal people on the east coast of Australia. In Aboriginal culture, the skyscape was believed to be a reflection of the land and waterways that fell beneath it.”

In this artwork, the vibrant 'waves' of color are symbolic of the connection between the aerial, aquatic, and terrestrial plains. The shades of blue and white represent this ever-changing connection, which is mirrored in the streams of fresh waters that nourish both the Worimi lands and people. The shifting thickness of each wave speaks to the constant ebbs and flows of energy between Worimi country and the heavens.

Oakland Park Plans to Celebrate 30

Years of Gay Softball

Oakland Park Mayor Mitch Rosenwald and Vice Mayor Tim Lonergan will host South Florida Amateur Athletic Association founding members, past players and executives, as well as current board members, players, coaches, and fans for a special 30th anniversary Founders' Dedication Ceremony at Wimberly Athletic Fields on July 20.

Wimberly is where the first pitch, hit, and run in league play were recorded in the inaugural game. “It is truly an honor to get to celebrate 30 years of LGBT softball, not only with many of our founders but also where it all began here in Oakland Park,” says SFAAA Commissioner Rocky Bowell, who is serving his second term. “SFAAA is not only softball; lasting friendships are made,” Bowell concludes. “And we get to play the game we love.”

A proclamation will be issued to honor SFAAA's legacy and ongoing contributions to South Florida. In

addition, the Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library will also be making a special presentation to recognize one of the oldest recorded LGBT civil rights events in Oakland Park history. “I am grateful to the leaders who have taken the league to new heights since then and to the current SFAAA board for their commitment in preserving its history,” says SFAAA co-founder Jim Stork. “Past and present, whether we have met or not, we are all part of a softball family."

An exhibition game will follow the noon ceremony, and the public is welcome to attend.

The league was founded by Stork, George Kessinger, and the late Bob Hagen in July 1994. The league grew from a handful of teams and players to more than 30 teams and almost 500 players and supporters in 2024. “Special shoutouts to Stan Butler, our first manager, the one and only George Kessinger, and the late Bob Hagen, our first commissioner,” Stork adds. “All of them helped inspire to build our new league back in 1994.”

Other dignitaries scheduled to attend are former North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance Commissioner Jim Marks, who helped guide SFAAA into the national organization, as well as Oakland Park author and historian Susan Gillis, who is writing a book on the history of the city. SFAAA has been a staple of South Florida and the national gay scene for three decades. Since 1995, the region has hosted the annual Hurricane Showdown softball tournament held over Thanksgiving weekend. SFAAA also hosted the NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series in 2006. The league will send 14 teams to this year's Gay Softball World Series, which will be held in Las Vegas in October.

On Sunday July 21, SFAAA will hold its 30th Anniversary Gala, where new members to the SFAAA Hall of Fame will be inducted and league awards distributed.

The league will start up again in late August with ratings sessions followed by the fall season after Labor Day. The 30th Hurricane Showdown will be held again during Thanksgiving weekend. You can follow at sfaaasoftball.com for more information on the league.
