As I have mentioned almost every year, one of the best parts of doing the Annual Spa Edition (this is year number lucky 13) are the relationships the Hotspots staff have formed with the local spa owners, managers, and staff. Every year we look forward to seeing them and spending some quality time with their staff. In addition, we get to meet new people when new spas come on board. This year we welcome 2 new Spa's: Sana Skin Studio and Pura Essencia Aesthetics Boutique and welcome back 2 spas that came back after a few years: Away Spa and Heavenly Spa and Fitness.

Sana Skin Studio

3 locations: 2 in Miami and 1 in Fort Lauderdale

Wynwood:167 NW 25th St., Miami, FL 33127

305-707-5176 Wynwood@sanaskinstudio.com

Fort Lauderdale: 807 NE 2nd Ave., Ste 320 Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304

954-944-3311 - FTL@sanaskinstudio.com

Coconut Grove: 2810 Oak Ave., Miami, FL 33133

305-942-9444 - Grove@sanaskinstudio.com

Sana is a skin studio made for you. Redefining the skincare experience through goal driven facials, real guidance and clean skincare. More than a skin studio, Sana is a movement towards healthier skin and selflove. The name Sana, deriving from the Spanish word “Sanar” meaning to heal, embodies the philosophy that everyone can become their own “Skin Healer.” Unlike traditional facials, Sana's facials are rooted in education. Each facial is a chance to learn more about your skin and its needs. From the moment I walked into the studio it felt serene and smelled amazing. They only use natural skincare products, and the entire shop makes you feel like you have been transported to the self-care cloud of your

dreams. I then was greeted by the receptionist who was super friendly and gave me the intake form, which was incredibly thorough. I then met my esthetician Marina, who walked me to her area. The rooms are just separated with thick drapes which are private and felt very bohemian chic.

Marina was going to perform the Super Glow Facial (70 mins; $205) – this procedure combines all the benefits of their Signature 50, which includes Purifying, hydrating and anti-aging - all in one; and light extractions, and adds a professional grade brightening peel, Gua sha massage, microcurrent + a dose of oxygen. This procedure drains toxins and leaves skin feeling hydrated, contoured and glowing and has zero downtime.

Before starting the facial asked me to take a few deep breaths and took me on an Aromatherapy sensory journey. This was followed in order by a Double cleansing, a skin analysis, a lifting massage, a Lymphatic drainage massage, a Gua sha massage, Exfoliation and enzyme peel, extractions, a Hi frequency Micro current pure lift, a Mask, which was hydrating and soothing, Oxygen infusion and ended with Aroma therapy. Marina was so knowledgeable, and her touch was so amazing it was one of the most enjoyable facials I have ever had.

After the facial was over Marina said she would meet me out in the lobby and gave me a carbonated flavored water and made some recommendations for

my skincare routine. As I was leaving the spa, I felt like I was glowing and refreshed! For more information, go to: sanaskinstudio.com

The

Grand Resort and Spa

539 N. Birch Road, Fort Lauderdale 954-630-3000

One of the best things about doing our annual Spa edition is the friends I have made over the years at the different spa's and going to the Grand always feels good as I get to see Greg Howell and Robert Nocifora, and of course, for those of you who have been loyal readers of the Spa edition you know my wifey, Paula, works there. Paula is just an amazing human being, and I am always excited about seeing her. Not to worry, her real husband knows all about me, and is cool with her having a gay husband. In addition, this year I got to meet there new hire Moshe.

This year they decided to pamper me with their Ultimate Spa Manicure ($65)

and Ultimate Spa Pedicure ($75).

For the Ultimate Spa manicure Paula starts with nail trimming, and then soaks my hands, followed by filing them, cuticle maintenance, a scrub to soften my hands, a massage and ends with a moisturizer.

It was then off to get the Spa's Ultimate Pedicure which of course takes place in a state-of-the-art massage chair and starts with a Relaxing therapeutic soak. Afterwards my nails were trimmed, filed and Paula took care of my cuticles.

Afterwards she applied an exfoliating and hydrating coconut scrub, which was removed with hot towels. The next step was a skin softening paraffin wax treatment and while the paraffin was working its magic Paula massaged my legs. The paraffin was also removed with hot towels and then she buffed my nails, so not only did my feet feel amazing they looked amazing.

If you are a local or visiting from out of town and staying somewhere else, the spa guests at the Grand Resort and Spa have access to the resort facilities from 9am to 5pm, and you can take advantage of this before or after (or both) your treatment(s).

For those of you who don't know, The Grand Resort and Spa took over the 3 connecting guest houses about a year ago and they are now one big property making it the largest gay Guest house in the country. A special shout out to the General manager Patrick and Front Desk Manager Victor who are always so great to work with. For more information, go to: thegrandresortandspa.com

Pura Essencia Aesthetics Boutique

2900 N Dixie Hwy Suite #201, Oakland Park, FL 33334

954-998-7132 • puraessenciaaesthetics@gmail.com

Funny story: I discovered this spa because Laura, the owner, is the girlfriend (soon to be fiancée—hint, hint! LOL) of my realtor, Ricky. It's a hidden gem in an unassuming building, but once you enter her suite, it's beautiful, peaceful, and truly spa-like. With eight years of experience, Laura has specialized in Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Massage for the past four years. I was inspired to visit after a co-worker raved about the treatment.

When I arrived, one of Laura's regulars, Michele, was booking her next appointment. I asked if I could chat with her about the treatment, and she gladly shared her experience. She described how life-changing the sessions have been, saying, “I remember waking up the next day after my first sessi on and actually teared up. It was the first time I was not in pain, and I couldn't believe it was

possible.” Michele had been struggling with inflammation, bloating, and water retention, but through Laura's treatments, she has learned to identify and eliminate habits that harm her wellbeing, improving her gut health and overall quality of life.

Laura explained that the massage uses soft, rhythmic motions to promote lymph flow, focusing on areas rich in lymph nodes. The Brazilian part of it is emphasizing on faster and more contouring movements on the abdomen, legs and bum. This full-body experience helps eliminate toxins and excess fluids while sculpting your silhouette, leaving you rejuvenated and revitalized. The most rewarding part for Laura is witnessing her clients' transforma tions, both physically and mentally, as they become more mindful of their health—her ultimate goal. Additionally, Laura offers a variety of facials tailored to each client's needs. Her most popular services average between $100- $150, I recommend seeing her! Heavenly Spa & Fitness

The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort

321 N. Fort Lauderdale beach Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304 • 954.245.3040

The Heavenly Spa, which I have been lucky enough to visit before is

undergoing a nearly two-million-dollar renovation, so when I arrived at its temporary home, I was greeted by Spa Manager Ashley, who then proceeded to give me a tour of the renovations. Since we have been producing the Spa issue for over a decade, I have seen many spas undergo renovations and let me tell you this one is going to be stellar, and I can't wait to go to the grand re-opening on November 7 from 5:30 to 8pm to see how amazing the outcome will be. To attend the Grand Opening, you must purchase a $25 ticket, which includes passport to preview spa treatments around the world with chance to win door prizes, spa tours, mini spa services, cocktails and mocktails sponsored by JP Chanet, Don Q & Seedlip, light bites, and a $25 credit valid towards purchase of spa retail during event. In addition, there will be a Gift bag for 1st 50 to register, and while there be the first to see their new Spa Menu, which is destination themed with your passport to relaxation

from California to the Florida Keys to Fiji, Hawaii, Fiji, Zanzibar and more. In addition, they have added the product line of Phytocéane - Beauty inspired by nature (phytoceane.com), which will premiere at this grand opening. Phytocéane is beauty Inspired by Nature – French marine-based professional treatment line (off the coast of Brittany, France) featuring waters of the world. They will be the only spa offering Phytoceane treatments in Fort Lauderdale, and the only retail location in South Florida. After the tour I was brought back to the Spa's temporary location where I met Jean, my esthetician who would be administering the Glo2Facial – 50 mins $299 (100 min option available) – they are the only Resort Spa in Fort Lauderdale offering this treatment.

Jean is very young, but incredibly knowledgeable about skin care. I asked him how he learned so much at such a young age and he said that he had bad acne as a teenager, and he researched continuously on how to get better skin. This has now become his life's work, and you can tell how much he enjoys making others feel good. I am very confident Jean is amazing at administering all the different treatments Heavenly Spa offers (he is also a Massage Therapist), but I got lucky because his favorite is the Glo2 Facial. Here are the steps to that facial:

Step 1: Oxfoliation (OXY)-Glo2Facial's patented technology acts as a catalyst to increase the body's oxygen levels naturally, allowing for deeper absorption of active ingredients throughout the entirety of every

treatment. During this step, the Glo2Facial OxyPods react with Primer Gel to gently exfoliate the skin and create a bubbly, CO2rich environment on the skin's surface. The body responds by sending a surge of oxygen to the skin, which creates the ideal conditions to nourish and transform the skin from the inside out.

Step 2: Lite Ultrasound Experience (LUX)The lite ultrasound experience creates micro-vibrations that instantly smooth and plump the skin and increase the permeability of the skin's protective layer, enabling better nutrient absorption.

Step 3: Hands-Free Lymphatic Massage (Detox)- A relaxing hands-free lymphatic massage sculpts the face, delivering an instant reduction of redness and puffiness while infusing Glo2Facial's active ingredients even deeper into the skin. As I said earlier, Jean is passionate about skincare, and it comes out in his work. For more information, go to Westinfortlauderdalebeachspa.com

Jimmy Cohen's Day Spa

3045 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33306 754-206-4687 • jimmycohensdayspa@gmail.com

When I entered the spa, I was greeted by the Assistant Spa Director Tom, and immediately asked if I wanted a beverage before my pampering sessions began. Jimmy decided to spoil me this year with many treatments. The first was a 60-minute massage ($99 for 60 min but buy 3 and get 1 free) given by James Crickman who has been working at J. Cohen's for 5 years now. This is James second career, but he was always in the medical field. James has good hands and knows how to let your stress melt away. The soothing massage, combined with the music, aroma therapy, and mood lighting made my mind, and body drift into bliss.

It was then off to Victor Hernandez for my body exfoliation ($129 for 60 min but buy 3

and get 1 free). I have known Victor for years, because he started out at J Cohen's as a receptionist, but loved the Spa environment so much, he went to school, and he now is a phlebotomist and medical esthetician.

Body Exfoliation consists of an application of a cleansing body sugar scrub. During the application process, the areas that are being focused on are scrubbed and exfoliated and then immediately covered with a warm towel (I can't te ll you how good the warm towel feels on your body; it's just something you have to experience for yourself). The scrub is then removed with the warm towel, and then lotion is applied to leave your skin soft and silky.

Afterwards I was taken to Jimmy (Yes, the kingpin himself did my next 2 treatments…lol…Jimmy and I have been friends for about a decade, so its always great to spend time with him)

for my medical spa facial ($149 but buy 3 and get 1 free), which is a skincare treatment that is administered by a dermatologist or a medical aesthetician who has been trained by a dermatologist to have a deeper understanding of the skin. A medical spa facial uses medical-grade skincare products and include medical-grade treatments like microdermabrasion. The benefits of this treatment are: Tighter skin, Moisturized skin, Relaxed mood and decreased stress, Exfoliated, soft, and supple skin, Anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial benefits, Reduction in aging signs, Smoothened skin texture, and has no downtime.

My next treatment was Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy ($500 a session, but buy 3 and get 1 free), also known as a photo facial, which is a way to improve the color and texture of your skin without surgery. It improves sun damage, irregular skin tones, gets rid of broken capillaries and is good for rosacea. It can undo some of the visible damage caused by sun exposure -called photoaging. Though the IPL photo facial is most frequently used for facial rejuvenation, it can also renew the neck, upper chest, shoulders, hands, arms, and legs. If you have signs of sun damage on multiple parts of your body, treating them all with intense pulsed light may give you a more uniformly youthful look. Away Spa

W Fort Lauderdale • 401 N Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. 954-414-8233

W Fort Lauderdale's AWAY Spa is a fullservice spa offering revitalizing massages, body treatments, detoxifying facials, manicure & pedicures, a Beauty Bar for makeup and hair styling & cutting services. Wellness experts arere there to offer skincare regimens from their Comfort Zone line. In addition, they offer complimentary valet parking with any treatment.

AWAY's menu includes five categories: Quick Fix for tune-ups; Detox to cleanse from the inside out; Massage treatments to de-stress, go deep and nurture the skin; Face options to lift, firm and revive; and Body to buff, polish and glow from the outside in.

When I walked into the Spa I was surrounded by a multitude of amazing products that are displayed beautifully so your eyes have a feast to look at. I was then greeted by the receptionist who checked me in and took me

to the men's Locker room. I changed into my robe and looked around at the amazing healthy snacks, fruits and drinks that were on display and loved all the products that were available to use at the sink. A few minutes later Daniella came to get me from the relaxing waiting area and told me that she would be administering both of my services. Daniella then walked me to her room and explained what she was going to do and then left the room for me to get under the sheet.

Nicola (GM of the Spa) wanted me to experience two of their signature treatments, so Daniella started with the De-Stress Massage (50 min - $180). The de-stress Massage revives tired muscles and reduces brain fog with head-clearing oils, moderate pressure and tension-releasing techniques. Daniella's hands were so soft and combining that with the bed t hat heated up I felt like I was in a cocoon of joy. It was so relaxing I know I dozed off a few times.

Once the massage was done, Daniella went directly into Aways Prescription Facial (50 Min, $185). The treatment includes cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, a massage and lastly a mask. This procedure is for inside and outside recovery and is fully customized to whatever your skin needs most: hydration, deep cleansing, age protection or treat sensitivity. The facial is performed with The Aways line called Comfort Zone. For more information, go to: Whotels.com

Spa Cabana’s

2231 NE 26th Street, Fort Lauderdale 954-565-2307

Spa Cabanas has been a part of the Spa Edition since we started 13 years ago, so naturally I am always happy to see owner Carlos and manager Tony, who has the sexiest voice in Fort Lauderdale. Carlos has now been the owner for 5 years and has really made Spa Cabanas a special place for wellness and pampering built on a strong sense of community and healing.

I was introduced to Michael Arechavaleta who would be administering the 60-minute sports massage with CBD oil and pressure gun ($145). Michael has been a Massage Therapist for many years and has worked at the Spa Cabanas for 4 years. Michael intuitively recognized my problem areas and addressed my

shoulder tension and lower back issues, which I felt immediate relief from following his treatment. I have been lucky enough to have had many massages in my life, but I must admit Michael was one of the best, so it’s no surprise that he has been nominated the last 2 years as best masseur. I will definitely be seeing Michael again! Next, I was introduced to Manuel Echezuria, who has also been with the Spa for 4 years, who led me to his area for a 60 min Anti-Aging facial ($129) .

The facial was perfectly customized, to rebalance and re-energize my skin type for an anti-aging result. It actively increases skin moisture, calms irritations, and minimizes expression lines. After assessing my skin needs and making an evaluation, he proceeded to cleanse and exfoliate using the Spa’s amazing line of PCA products, which they also carry and sell. Once the cleaning is finished, extractions are done, followed by a high frequency treatment used to minimize pores and even out the complexion tone. Finally, a mask was applied that was soothing and refreshing and made me feel quite relaxed. In addition, a relaxing anti-aging eye treatment helped reduce my puffiness and fine lines. They asked me to remind everyone to ask about their monthly specials and packages by calling them. In addition, I would like to congratulate Carlos and the entire staff on getting the best spa in Broward County for 10 years in a row. For more information, go to Thecabanasguesthouse.com/mens-spa

We Are What We Eat

To eat and what not to eat? That is the question! In our last issue we covered the 4 elements of Fitness - EAT, LIFT, SLEEP, REPEAT. This time we bite into the first element and EAT it like a boss, because that is what hot bodies are really made of: FOOD! We can exercise all we want but without food, the body has nothing to work with.

Food is one of the basic necessities of life, it contains nutrients which are the basis for the structure and function of every cell in our bodies - Nutrients are substances found in food that are essential for the body to function, they are divided into two main categories: macronutrients, which include carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, and micronutrients, which include vitamins and minerals. The energy in food is

measured in units called calories, most adults need between 1300 and 1800 calories a day just to stay alive without any physical activity at all, but how many additional calories we need to eat depends on your lifestyle and goals.

So what do you wanna be? If you are skinny or underweight and want to increase size, you will need to eat more frequently, five to six smaller meals throughout the day. Your diet should include a variety of foods that provide enough energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Such as meats and fish, nuts and seeds, beans and whole grains. Some easy options for your shopping list should include peanut butter, oats, avocado, sweet potato, salmon, ground beef and eggs.

Your macros might look like this:

· Protein - 140 to 175 grams daily.

· Fats - 52 to 87 grams daily.

· Carbs - 304 to 418 grams daily.

If you are overweight and wanna lose fat you gotta keep it on the low carb and high protein basis, limiting refined carbohydrates (sugar, most bread, white rice) and replace it with lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, and some healthy fats. Add some tuna, eggs, turkey, chicken, spinach, whole grains, olive oil, nuts and avocado to your shopping cart if you wanna lose fat and build muscle.

Try this range of macros for weight loss:

· 10-30% carbs

· 40-50% protein

· 30-40% fats

And if you just wanna adapt to a healthy nutrition and don't know where to start, here is an example what your day would look like:

Breakfast:

Meat, eggs, yogurt, fruit, nuts

Lunch:

Meat, whole grains, avocado, salad

Dinner:

Meat/fish, vegetable, fruit

If you ate like this 90% of the time you would lose fat, gain muscle and feel 10 times better.

When it comes to food, there is one for every mood, every taste and every case, and since we don't only eat because we are hungry, it is important to make choices that aligns with our fitness and well-being.

For a better skin, cherry, oily fish, tomatoes and green tea will help you look younger, clearing acne, blackheads and wrinkles. To get smarter add some dark chocolate, rosemary, citrus fruits, turmeric and beets in your diet to enhance brain function. If you feel tired try almonds, watermelon, bee pollen, dates, chia seeds to feel awake and energized throughout the day. For better mood: nuts, bananas, sweet potatoes, olive oil will lift you up.

While there is medicine in natural foods, processed foods can have the reverse effect caused by low nutritional values and preservatives that have been linked to an increased risk of health conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease, however that only occurs based on your relationship with your food. So Appreciate with moderation, always eat fresh and remember you are what you eat, so honor your body with the foods that aligns with your fitness. A healthy diet leads to a healthy body, which, in turn, increases your odds of a longer, happier life. The food we eat should bring us both health and happiness, and keeping a healthy relationship with your food allows you to make conscious choices to what goes into your mouth and its place in your hot body.

*Disclaimer: I hope this article was able to help you become more familiar with your diet I am not a nutritionist, what I know is what I have studied as a fitness professional, and through try and error as a Bodybuilder competitor and in my daily life. I have used @drjamesdinic on Instagram for reference, and I highly recommend his content on the subject.

Don't miss our next issue, for step number 2 in the 4 elements of Fitness series. For questions, please email me on: hotbodies@hotspotsmagazine.com

Get ready for queer romance with Jacob Elordi and Diego Calva

“On Swift Horses,” the new dramatic feature from director Daniel Minahan (“Fellow Travelers”) and screenwriter Bryce Kass (“Lizzie”), recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. The period film, based on the novel by Shannon Pufahi, follows a family settling in California in the 1950s. But get the image of 50s heteronormativity out of your head: the story branches out into a heterosexual love triangle, a secret lesbian dalliance, and a passionate gay affair. Jacob Elordi (“Saltburn”) and Diego Calva (“Babylon”) reportedly steam up the screen with their love scenes, bouncing off the “straight” marriage

of characters played by Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Twisters”) and Will Poulter (“The Bear”). There's no word yet on a general theatrical date but this sounds like the kind of grown-up, Oscar-friendly romantic drama (it's a law now: at least one big Oscar movie has to be queer) that would fit right into a holiday release schedule. Stay tuned.

Sir Ian teases future Gandalf surprise What we know: Andy Serkis will direct and star in the first of two new “Lord of the Rings” films for Warner Bros, and current working title of the first one is “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens writing the screenplay and Peter Jackson producing. But other than Serkis reprising the role of Gollum, no new cast has been announced,

which led Sir Ian McKellen to get a little coy about his own possible return as wizard Gandalf the White during a recent interview with “The Big Issue.” The actor is reported as saying, “Enthusiasm for 'The Lord of the Rings' shows no signs of abating… I can't tell you any more than that. I've just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I'll be playing him.” As queer LOTR fans who were shipping Frodo and Sam before it was cool, we love this, obviously. But we love coded descriptions of contract and salary negotiations even more. Ok, WB, go write Sir Ian his check!

a scenario that spirals into obsession, domination and murder. When we first heard about the movie we were excited to think that Araki was turning the 90s erotic thriller genre upside down and shaking it. We just didn't know he was going to shake this hard: he's cast British pop star and social media meme obsession Charli XCX. What role the on-fire, queer-fave singer will take in the story is under wraps but her addition to the horny project just added a ton of queer buzz to an already anticipated film. Brat Summer might be over but Brat Cinema is coming soon.

Harry Met Sally,” but to see Jane Krakowski and Neil Patrick Harris join an alreadyhigh-profile cast for queer playwright and director Robert O'Hara's (“Insurrection: Holding History” “Slave Play”) upcoming Off-Broadway play “Shit.Meet.Fan.” Based on the 2016 film “Perfect Strangers,” it's the story of what happens when a group of friends play a very awkward cocktail party game: sharing the contents of their phones in front of everyone else. What could go wrong? Everything, of course. Harris and Krakowski will join co-stars Debra Messing, Billy Magnussen, Constance Wu, Garret Dillahunt (“Fear The Walking Dead”) and Trammell Tillman (“Severance”) when the show opens at MCC Theater on October 28, through November 17.
