Equality Florida’s St. Pete Gala

Saturday, May 11

T

The annual Equality Florida St. Pete Gala will take place on Saturday, May 11 from 7- 10:30pm at The Mahaffey Theater (400 1st Street South). This year they will be honoring two very special recipients with their first ever Edie Windsor Lifetime Achievement Award, Georgetown Professor Nan Hunter, and activist/author David Mixner. David Mixner has spent over 50 years at the forefront of American politics and international human rights, championing LGBTQ equality and more. He is also the bestselling author of Stranger Among Friends, At Home with Myself, and Brave Journeys (cowritten by Dennis Bailey). Once described by Newsweek as “the most powerful gay man in America,” Mixner played instrumental roles as manager, fundraiser and strategist on numerous political campaigns, most notably those of Bill Clinton, Gary Hart and Jerry

Brown. In 1978, he helped defeat the Briggs Initiative in California, which would have made it illegal for gays and lesbians to be school teachers. During the AIDS crisis in the 80's, he helped draft California legislation to deal more aggressively with the epidemic. In 1993, he chained himself to the fence outside the White House to protest his friend Bill Clinton's “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” policy for gays in the military. He continues to be a prolific writer and activist. Nan Hunter specialized in constitutional and civil rights law as a member of the national legal staff of the American Civil Liberties Union in New York. For the first half of her 10 years at the ACLU, she worked on reproductive freedom issues and litigating in federal courts around the country. In 1986, she founded the LGBT Rights Project, the first entity dedicated to LGBT rights to be sponsored by a non-gay public interest law organization. Under her leadership, the ACLU

integrated LGBT and AIDS rights advocacy in its national office, its Congressional advocacy work in Washington, DC, and throughout its 50-state affiliate network. Professor Hunter is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine. Her awards include the Pioneer of Courage award from the American Foundation for AIDS Research and the inaugural Dan Bradley award from the LGBT Bar Association. Retired school board member Linda Lerner will be receiving our Voice for Equality Award, and Equality Florida Steering Committee member John L. Gascot will be awarded with the Amy S. Mandel Service and Leadership award. Linda Lerner retired in November of 2018 as the longest-serving school board member of Pinellas County Schools. Linda has a Masters of Science in Special Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. During her nearly three decades of school board membership, she was an outspoken leader for issues important to all students. She has a reputation as a fierce advocate for LGBTQ+ issues and was the first school board member to say the word “gay” in meetings. In 1994, she fought and won the distribution of sex education materials in Pinellas schools. Current School Board Chairwoman Rene Flowers has said of Linda, “She always made sure that policies lined up

LGBTQ+ youth since 1994, with participation in PFLAG Pinellas, GLSEN Pinellas and presently the Pinellas Youth Pride Board. John Gascot moved to St. Petersburg with Ron Diana, Jr., his partner of 21 years, five years ago. They felt immediately at home, finding the sense of community they'd been searching for in numerous prior moves. Shortly after samesex marriage became legal in the state of Florida, the two tied the knot. John, a prolific visual artist with an instantly recognizable signature style he calls Latin Pop, became involved with Equality Florida as an art donor. Soon after he became a steering committee volunteer, eventually becoming Silent Auction Chair. After receiving post-election hate mail from a neighbor, John decided to use his platform as a working artist in the Tampa Bay art scene to help disenfranchised youth. He is the founder of Diversity Arts, Inc., a non-profit which aims to serve disenfranchised youth and groups (with an emphasis on LGBTQ youth) by providing safe environments, guidance and materials for creative self-discovery, expression and socio-cultural interaction. The gala will feature: delicious cuisine from Catering by the Family, London entertainer Wanda Cookie performing, an open bar, Kahwa Espresso Bar, dancing with DJ Fresh, a fantastic

From the Tony Award-winning creators of the Broadway classic Ragtime and inspired by the beloved films, Anastasia is the new Broadway musical that's “one of the most gorgeous shows in years!” (New York Observer). This dazzling show transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920's as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Rathbun, Michael McCorry Rose, Matt Rosell, Sareen Tchekmedyian, and Addison Mackynzie Valentino. It was a pleasure to sit down with Stephen Brower (Dmitry) for this exclusive Hotspots Interview:

At what age did you begin performing, and how did it happen?

I started performing when I was about 8 years old as there was a neighborhood playhouse which had an improv summer camp for kids. The year before I started I saw my brother perform a homemade performance of Peter Pan, and I decided I could do it much better. I started acting, and never stopped.

What was your first professional/paid role?

2 months of the tour. It's such a fantastic role and the show has amazing music.

What is your fantasy role?

I always say the one they will cast me in as I am really interested in doing new work and developing new characters. However, I do love some of the classics. I would love to play Billy Crocker in Anything Goes.

What should our readers expect from this production of “Anastasia?”

You can expect an epic journey full of romance, and dance, with beautiful costumes and a good time for all ages. And we are all really excited to be in Florida, and to soak up some warm weather!

It was in the Lear Theater in Oklahoma City. My high school drama teacher told me to drive over an audition, and I did. I was in the ensemble of Oliver, and Hairspray that summer. I was paid, but next to nothing.

How did you get cast in this Broadway Across America production of “Anastasia”?

I auditioned for the Broadway show and was lucky enough to get cast and get put in the show right away as an ensemble member. I then started to understudy for Dmitry. About 6 months later they were casting for the national tour, which I auditioned for and got the lead.

Other than this role, what has been your favorite to play?

I loved playing Adam Hochberg in An American in Paris. I started as an understudy, and they promoted me to the lead for the last

The smash-hit musical that brings together four-time Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein (Book) and Grammy Award-winning rock icon Cyndi Lauper (Tony Award-winner for Best Score for Kinky Boots) returns to the Straz Center's Morsani Hall May 17-19, sponsored in part by the Tampa Bay Times. The winner of six 2013 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Kinky Boots features a Tony Award-winning score by Cyndi Lauper, a book by Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein, and direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell. Kinky Boots continues playing on stages around the globe and is currently represented with a Broadway production in its sixth year, a London production in its fourth year (having won the 2016 Olivier Award for Best Musical), a UK tour, the North American national tour in its fifth year and a Japanese production returning to Tokyo and Osaka for a second season this coming spring. Previous international productions of Kinky Boots include a Germany production, a Korean production which completed a third successful season this past spring, an extended run in

Toronto (winner of the Dora Award for Best Musical) and an award-winning Australian production. The Grammy Award-winning original Broadway cast recording of Kinky Boots is available on Sony Masterworks Broadway. Inspired by true events, Kinky Boots takes you from a gentlemen's shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Charlie Price is struggling to live up to his father's expectations and continue the family business of Price & Son. With the factory's future hanging in the balance, help arrives in the unlikely but spectacular form of Lola, a fabulous performer in need of some sturdy new stilettos. It was a pleasure to sit down with James May who plays George for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

At what age did you begin performing, and how did it happen?

I dabbled in performing when I was young, but I didn't start doing musical theater until I hit high school at around the age of 14 or 15. However, I didn't take it seriously until College, when I realized I was at the wrong school and wanted to do musical theater.

What was your first professional/paid role?

My very first paid acting job was when I was an understudy for a musical called “Gull.” It was a modern adaptation of Anton Checkhov’s “The Seagull.” I was lucky enough to book that job

right before I was leaving college.

How did you get cast in this Broadway Across America production of “Kinky Boots”?

I just went to the audition, it was an open call. Quickly into the audition process I realized it was a good fit for me. The casting department agreed, and here I am.

Other than this role, what has been your favorite to play?

Henry Higgins in “My Fair Lady,” as I really like the depth and complexity of that show. It was really fun to dive into what I think makes Henry tick and motivates him to behave the way he does.

What is your fantasy role?

Definitely my dream role doesn't exist on the stage. It would be Jack Skellington from “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” I think it will eventually be adapted, and hopefully I can get the part.

What should our readers expect from this production of Kinky Boots?

What I love about the show is that it's extremely universal. Charlie's (main character) struggles is what anyone can relate to as he is trying to figure out what his place in the world is.

Is there anything else about you we should know?

I have an etsy shop where I make and sell Upcycle home goods. You can find out more about this at Instagram.com/upcycleangelo. For more information on James May, go to: Instagram.com/jamesmayname

Power Up Your Sex Life With These Super Foods!

Do you love to eat and have lots of great marathon sex? How about if you could satiate both needs at once? This week here's the low down on five super foods so yummy they'll help keep you horny and coming back for more. Supplement your diet today and you could be having the best sex of your life tomorrow‌ and every day for the rest of your life! Scrambled, poached or hard-boiled, eggs are a good source of B Vitamins, a key nutrient for keeping your sex drive roaring and your mind clear and stress free. Fatigue, job demands and partying too hard, exhaust your supply of B Vitamins deflating your metabolism and leaving you limp and lethargic. Try taking things easy –

over easy with a plateful of eggs rich in Vitamin B now and at breakfast, lunch or supper. When it comes to eating for great marathon sex, have a heaping bowl of ice cream. Yup, ice cream is endurance food for sex. It has high levels of calcium and phosphorous, two minerals that build your muscles' energy reserves and boost your libido. All that calcium can add real “oomph” to your orgasms since the muscles that control ejaculation need calcium in order to spasm and contract properly. Just don't overdo this sweet stuff because ice cream is also high in fat content. So, you want healthier, better quality sperm? Call in the Brazilians – the Brazil nuts, that is. Brazil nuts are a top source of selenium, a mineral that helps keep sperm cells healthy while also helping the little buggers to swim faster. Brazil nuts are also a

great source of Vitamin E, an antioxidant that protects sperm cells against free radical damage caused by air pollution and other toxins you may soak up all day long. Do you have a carnivorous side to you? Visit your favorite steak house and chow down on a good lean hunk of steak. Steak is loaded with zinc, a mineral that boosts libido and enhances arousal during sex. And best of all, eating red meat can help boost your testosterone level while limiting your body's production of SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) – a substance that prevents blood flow to the penis and reduces male sexual stamina. A lean cut of steak a couple times per week can be beneficial, just be careful how you prepare it. Trim excess fat and grilled or broiled is best.

After your slab of lean juicy meat, finish the evening with a couple of delightfully sinful pieces of dark chocolate. The cocoa in chocolate contains stimulants that increase your body's sensitivity to touch. Chocolate also contains phenyl ethylamine, a chemical that can give you a slight natural high. Cover your boyfriend in dark chocolate sauce and you're both destined to enjoy a dessert sure to delight your discriminating palate.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Haley and Jana for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

At what age did you begin performing, and how did it happen?

Hayley – I fell in love with performing at a very young age as my parents and grandparent were season subscribers to the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center (what the Straz Center is now). My grandpa was George Steinbrenner, and when we would come into NYC for baseball season I would run off to Broadway. It's all I ever wanted to do. Jana- My mother used to take dance lessons in Pennsylvania with Gene Kelley and sent me off to dancing school when I was 4 years old. I started doing solos when I was 6, and did theater all through high school and college and then came to NYC. Since my first dance lesson I never wanted to do anything else but entertain.

What was your first professional/paid role?

Hayley – My first paid gig was when I was in college and played Antonia “Man of La Mancha.” In New York, my first role was the understudy to Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar in the national tour. Jana – My first real professional job was in the chorus of “South Pacific” at the Jones Beach Marine Theater. Out of 600 girls I was one of three to be hired. However, my first paid job was in my teens when I was paid to be in the chorus in the Mountain Playhouse.

How did this show “We Just Move On – The Songs of Kander and Ebb” come about?

We were in rehearsal for “This One's for the Girls,” and we both love Kander and Ebb, and we both gravitated toward them because they

Hayley – I fall in love with everything that I am doing when I am doing it. So now it's Mama Morton in “Chicago” on Broadway. Jana – I have done so many roles, but the one that stands out is playing Mama Rose in “Gypsy” on Broadway. I joined the company when Tyne Daly was the lead and it was touring in Tampa before it went to Broadway. Currently, I am the lead producer on “Fiddler On The Roof in Yiddish” in NYC….as much as I love being on stage, this show is the crowning glory of my career.

What is your fantasy role?

Hayley – There are two: Eva Peron in Evita, which I have been chasing after to play my entire life and eventually I will play her. I also would love to play Mama Rose in “Gypsy.” Jana- Because I am a producer now I have less opportunity to be on stage, but I would love to play Norma Desmond in “Sunset Boulevard.”

What should our readers expect from We Just Move On – The Songs of Kander and Ebb?

Jana – They are known as powerhouse writers…for example “Chicago” has been a huge Broadway hit forever! When your readers come see this show they are going to see a real song and dance show, and be moved by the vulnerable and playful conversation between Hayley and myself. It's a show for everyone and one of our major reviewers called this a “Mini Broadway show in under 75 minutes.” Hayley – I am a Tampa girl at heart, so for me it's all about coming home to Tapa after making it on Broadway.

For more information on Jana, you can check her website out at: Janarobins.com. You can also Youtube either Jana or Hayley and so much will pop up including stuff from “We Just Move On – The Songs of Kander and Ebb.” Regularly priced tickets are $25-$95. He Keeps Hinting at Wanting a Boyfriend

D

Dear Andreus, I have been hooking up with the same guy for a while. We met on Grindr, and it has always only been a sex thing for me. We have sex, and then he leaves. The last couple of times he has been hanging around and trying to be a bit more romantic with me. He keeps hinting at things like wanting a boyfriend, and needing a relationship, but I don't want that with him. I don't know what to do. I love the sex, but he is not the type of guy that I could have a relationship with. Help! Happily Single Dear Happily Single, There is no way to handle this situation other than being honest. If you want only a sexual relationship, then you need to tell him. Some people are not able to separate sex from their emotions, so they equate sex with love. You are obligated to be straightforward. The longer you do this, potentially the more emotionally involved he will become. Then instead of him being a little hurt that you don't want more, he will be crushed. It's always important to be direct about what you want from the beginning so nobody gets hurt.

Dear Andreus, I just got the opportunity of a lifetime. I got an amazing promotion at work, and the pay is outstanding. I have been waiting years for this, but there is a problem. It requires that I move to the west coast, and my partner does not want to go. I am so conflicted because I have really wanted this job and have been working towards it for at least 10 years now. I love him, and I don't want to leave him behind, but he is dead set on not moving. What am I supposed to do? Sincerely, Jason G. Dear Jason, First, congratulations on the promotion! Seems like you are struggling between two loves. Having worked so hard, you deserve to pursue your promotion. Is it possible that you and your partner can come to some type of arrangement? Maybe he can live part-time with you there or visit you a week out of every month. There is no easy way through this situation. You guys are going to have to sit down and really talk about this. If you two have a solid relationship, there will be a way to figure this out, so everyone at least gets some of what they want. Don't make any demands and don't give ultimatums. Just talk about it and ask him what he would do if he were in your shoes. I really hope it works out.
