A few months ago, The KindRED Pride Foundation announced a new global vision building on the tradition of “gay day” at Magic Kingdom, which is always held on the first Saturday of June to Kick Off Pride Month. The KindRED Pride Foundation was inspired by the desire to expand the magic created by the 28-year tradition of the original “Gay Day at Magic Kingdom” in Orlando. The event started with just a handful of people who decided they would meet socially on the first Saturday in June in front of the castle. They would all wear RED t-shirts to identify each other since most had only met on a computer bulletin board service and never all in person.

The event quickly grew to one of the largest LGBT+ annual gatherings in the world. The growth was in part a result of the national media exposure brought on by the protests by far-right groups threatening to boycott. The original attendees unwittingly pioneered one of the first gay travel “destination” weekends. Who could have known the tremendous impact of the original gathering would have on the social fabric of our community as hundreds of thousands of guests from around the world experienced the magic of RED Shirt Pride Day each year and took the stories and images back to their communities. The KindRED Pride Foundation's mission is to honor the kindred spirit, bravery, and courage of the original attendees back in 1991 by expanding the “grass roots” desire to bring the community together to celebrate and to support endeavors by like-minded charities within the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex, and Ally (LGBTQIA)

all hosted by Jorge Estevez with music by DJs Tatiana and JB Burgos. It was a pleasure to sit down with Brody Ray for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

community by producing sporting, music, and other special events. The organization is aligning with national, regional, and local nonprofits who provide valuable resources to fight bullying, teen homelessness, HIV services, and legal/business/housing services to the LGBT+ community. The goal is to get 1,000,000 or more likeminded people to wear RED on June 1, 2019 no matter where you are in the world. In addition KindRED pride will feature one major event this year on Thursday, May 30 at House of Blues in Orlando: “We Are One.” This will be an extravaganza for diversity & incusion and feature performances by Shangela (RuPaul's Drag Race and All Stars), Ty Herndon, Brody Ray, MDO, Erin Foley, Beth Sacks, Antigravity, Varietease, and much more

screaming for the boy toys and to cut my hair off, and I refused to wear a dress. At that point I finally felt normal. I didn't know what the word was at that time but I knew I was a boy trapped in a girl's body. At 14, I got cleared to do any physical changes I wanted to do, but my mom asked me to wait till after high school, and then she continued to ask me to wait. Finally at age 21/22, I couldn't wait anymore and then my mom stepped up and paid for all my surgery's (hundreds of thousands of dollars).

At what age did you begin singing?

At about age 14. I was playing guitar at age 8 and I eventually got a little bored as I mastered the guitar and at that point I started singing and playing shows.

When did you know singing would be your career?

I think I knew as soon as I picked up the guitar. I had been performing with my family since I was a little kid in diapers. In middle school I would say I am going to be a rock star when I grow up.

When did you realize you were trans?

I guess I always knew in my mind that something was off. I would tell my mom I was a boy at the age of 3. At age 5, I was kicking and

How did “America’s Got Talent” happen?

I had been auditioning for singing shows, and would get to the celebrity round and get so nervous I would bomb it, as I would have panic attacks. I spoke to my doctor and he gave me this heart rate pill, which gave me more

It will be a great highenergy show and I am going to celebrate with everybody.

How has life been since “America’s Got Talent?”

I have been the “Yes” man and been performing everywhere. I have also been spending thousands of dollars on my music and have been pushing out lots of music. I just released a new single last Friday “Take it too Far” on all digital music platforms. This year, I am performing at a lot of pride festivals in May and June.

Do you have a girlfriend or special someone?

I am engaged to be married in October. We met about 6 years ago. We met at a birthday party originally and then the second time at a bar, and the rest is history.

What should we expect at your performance at Kindred Pride?

courage. After that I decided I would audition for AGT, and I sent in a video audition by mail, and I got asked to come in sing for the national auditions with 2 executive producers. They loved it and then I got to perform at the L.A. rounds where I sang for the celebrities, and the medication worked. Unfortunately I forgot to take it for the second round and I bombed. But everything happens for a reason.

I think I am going to perform some songs that I sang on America's got Talent. I will also have a 2 minute video that I think everyone will love. It will be a great high-energy show and I am going to celebrate with everybody. Become a #bekindchampion, learn more, and/or purchase tickets to “We Are One” at: at kindredpride.org.

“Come From Away” At Straz and Dr. Phillips Centers for the Performing Arts. By: Scott Holland

C

Central Florida presents the national tour of Come From Away, a Broadway musical that tells the true story of the small town that welcomed the world, will make its Tampa debut at the Straz Center's Morsani Hall for a limited engagement June 4-9, and its Orlando Debut at The Dr. Phillips Center from June 11-16. Come From Away tells the remarkable true story of 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed

them. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships. On Sept. 11, 2001 the world stopped. On Sept. 12, their stories moved us all. The touring production of Come From Away will star Kevin Carolan (Disney's Newsies), Harter Clingman (Peter and The Starcatcher), Nick Duckart (In the Heights), Chamblee Ferguson, Becky Gulsvig (School of Rock the Musical), Julie Johnson (Memphis), Christine Toy Johnson (The Music Man), James Earl Jones II (The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess), Megan McGinnis (Les Misérables), Andrew Samonsky (South Pacific), Danielle K. Thomas (Avenue Q), Emily Walton (August Osage County), Marika Aubrey, Jane Bunting, Michael Brian Dunn, Julie Garnyé , Adam Halpin and Aaron Michael Ray. It was a pleasure to sit down with Christine Toy Johnson for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

At what age did you begin performing? What was your first paid gig and when did you know performing would be your career?

Christine Toy Johnson

I started modeling when I was 4 years old, so jobs for products like Life Cereal and Scotchgard were some of my first paid gigs in this industry. I saved the money I made and eventually used it for my initiation dues into Actors' Equity (the professional union for stage actors and stage managers), which I joined the summer I graduated from high school with a job playing “Liat” in a production of “South Pacific.” I grew up in the suburbs of NYC going to see tons of Broadway shows, and always knew that performing (and performing on Broadway!) was what I wanted to do! After modeling, starting in kindergarten I began doing plays and musicals in school and in community theatres -- and after joining the union, I worked in between my college semesters at Sarah Lawrence College at various summer stock theatres. I made my OffBroadway debut shortly after graduating from Sarah Lawrence. Since then, I've been lucky enough to have done 3 Broadway shows so far, about 10 Off-Broadway shows, a 100 or so television and film appearances – and “Come From Away” is the 4th National tour I've been on. I always think it's amazing that I've been able to make a living at this for my entire adult life! So very grateful for my life in the theatre!

Other than this role what has been your favorite?

I've gotten a chance to play so many favorites: “Maria” in “West Side Story” (where I met my husband Bruce Johnson, who played “Tony”), “Amalia” in “She Loves Me,” “Sarah” in Guys And Dolls,” and more recently, George's mother in “Sunday In The Park With George” at the Guthrie in 2017.

What's your fantasy role (a role you haven't played but want to)?

I'd love to play “Margaret” in “The Light In The Piazza.” I've performed some of the music in concert and just love it!

What should our readers expect from this touring company of “Come From Away”?

I genuinely love this company of “Come From Away,” and all of the people we work for. I hope your readers will join us and experience the incredible heart and humor of this show, and be as uplifted and moved as we are by this beautiful, true story. Our writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein and director Christopher Ashley have created this gorgeous piece of theatre that reminds us all of the power of intentional kindness, compassion and generosity and we can't wait to share it with you!

Come From Away began performances on Broadway on Feb. 18, 2017 and officially opened to critical acclaim on March 12, 2017 at Broadway's Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre (236 West 45th Street), and continues to play to standing-room-only audiences. The Mark Gordon Company will produce and finance a feature film adaptation of Come From Away. Two-time Tony Award nominees, Grammy nominees and Outer Critics Circle Award and Drama Desk Award winners Irene Sankoff and David Hein, who wrote the book, music and lyrics, will adapt the screenplay for

the project and Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley will direct. MGC's Mark Gordon will produce. A Best Musical winner all across North America, the smash hit musical has won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical (Christopher Ashley), five Outer Critics Circle Awards (NYC) including Outstanding New Broadway Musical, three Drama Desk Awards (NYC) including Outstanding Musical, four Helen Hayes Awards (D.C.) including Outstanding Production of a Musical, four Gypsy Rose Lee Awards (Seattle) including Excellence in Production of a Musical, six San Diego Critics Circle Awards including Outstanding New Musical, three Toronto Theatre Critics Awards including Best New Musical, three Dora Awards (Toronto) including Outstanding New Musical/Opera and Outstanding Production and the 2017 Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award (Toronto). Come From Away will play the Straz Center's Morsani Hall, June 4-9. Regularly priced tickets are $51-$130 and may be purchased by calling 813.229.STAR (7827) or 800.955.1045 outside Tampa Bay, in person at the Straz Center Ticket Sales Office or online at strazcenter.org. Come From Away then moves to the Dr. Phillips Center from June 11-16 with very few seats left, so jump on over to DrPhillipsCenter.org to get yours! S

With These Muscle-Building Strategies!

Springtime is a great time to refresh and renew! Enjoy yourself and make the most of your time in the gym with these muscle building techniques. Supersets are a great way to pick up the momentum and help you get more work done faster. Technically, a superset is when you train two opposing muscle groups (i.e. biceps versus triceps, back versus chest, quadriceps versus calf muscles) with only a small break between exercises. For example, you may do a set of flat bench barbell presses for chest, then move quickly using the same barbell for a bent over row for back. Go back and forth for three sets of each. Take a brief break and then alternate incline dumbbell presses and wide grip lat pull downs. Supersets

create balance and joint strength and allow one muscle group a brief rest while you blast its opposing muscle group. Supersets are a relentless way to push you and your workouts outside the box! Compound sets are great especially if you have a problem muscle group that won't grow. Compound sets employ two, three, or more intense exercises for the same muscle group. For example, a standing barbell curl can be combined with a preacher curl to really fry those biceps. Perform a set of barbell curls to exhaustion then move to a set of killer preacher curls to isolate those twin peaks. Compound sets bombard a muscle group working it to exhaustion. In my opinion compound sets are the most effective way to see a muscle group get bigger and stronger. Compound sets give that problem muscle group more bang for the buck! Forced reps are a great way to push

muscles just a little harder, once they've been pretty much exhausted. Just when you think you can't do another curl, press or squat, recruit someone else's muscles to help you! That is correct, get a trainer, partner, or buddy to help you squeeze out a couple of forced reps before you rack your weights and call it quits. Forced reps separate the men from the boys! Learn to accentuate the negative – at least with your reps! When I train clients, I'll often have them focus on the negative or eccentric contraction during an exercise. For example, during a bicep curl, explode as you bring the weight to your chin (concentric or positive contraction) then as you lower the weight (eccentric or negative contraction), slow down

and focus as you push your muscles to a new level of fatigue. Try doing negatives with bi's, tri's, chest, legs, etc., once a month to maximize size and strength. Don't overdo negatives or you may risk injury or overtraining. Forced reps give you the chance to show who the real boss is in your gym! Am I Being Unreasonable

by Expecting His Support?

D

Dear Andreus, Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some sexual issues. After not being able to perform repeatedly, and experiencing some discomfort, I have been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction. Since I am on top of things, my partner is clearly affected by this. He has suggested that he be able to find someone else to fulfill his sexual needs, until I can get help with this problem. I find this unacceptable and think that he is being completely selfish. I am afraid that this is going to tear us apart. Am I being unreasonable by expecting his support? Sincerely, Krishna Dear Krishna, Of course, it is unacceptable. If you are with someone who truly loves you, he should be thinking about how to help you, and not looking for a temporary ride. There are other options besides finding someone else to hook up with. Modern medicine has all kinds of solutions that can help you, and an Urologist is more suited to inform you than I am. Your partner can explore options such as toys, and maybe with your assistance it can make this hurdle a little less strenuous. I would be equally as disturbed. Talk it out. I am sure this is difficult for both. You need to work, until the greater problem gets solved.

Dear Andreus, I own a house, and after 10 years with my partner, he is pressuring me to add his name to the deed, so that he is an equal owner in the house. He gives a good argument, saying that after 10 years, he has more than earned that right. However, his prior relationship ended badly, and after a very nasty legal battle, he took his ex for everything. He also owns his own home, and I have never displayed an interest in it. I have some anxiety about things possibly changing once I make such a big decision. How can I resolve this situation without expressing my fear? Sincerely, Carl S. Dear Carl, This is not easy. Yes, your partner does give you a good argument. Ten years in a gay relationship, is monumental. Talk about it. Don't bring up his ex, and anything that happened with that. Just relay that you don't want anything to change if you should make this decision. If you are not comfortable giving him part-ownership of your home, maybe you guys should consider purchasing something together. If he has a home of his own, and you have yours, buying a place together could even things out. That seems the most reasonable decision, and there are ways to do that so that both parties are protected should things change. Just be open and honest.
