from the vice-president
The lazy, hazy, crazy days of another summer in Central Florida have come to an end as Fall ushers in cooler temperatures and an exciting season of events on the LGBT social calendar. This edition of Hotspots Central is devoted to “Broadway Across Central Florida” as we highlight the celebrated musicals and theatrical masterpieces which will be staged in the region this Fall. Everything you need to know can be found inside, so choose your “Must See” shows and buy your tickets early! The “What’s Hot” section details some of the other many social events taking place this month, ranging from the Go-Go Boy Competition at Southern Nights Orlando (Sept 6) to “City,” a fashion event with a twist at the Tampa Museum of Art (Sept. 9). In St. Pete, everyone should turn out for the “Health, Wellness and Community Fair” at Punky’s Bar & Grill in observance of National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. One of the biggest events of the year (and one of our favorites), the always spectacular Headdress Ball, takes place at the Orlando World Center Marriott on Sept. 23. This year’s theme is “Imaginarium.” Enjoy this edition and don’t miss our very special “Orlando Come Out With Pride” edition coming in print and online Sept. 28th.

On Your Feet! / October 17 – 22, 2017
“If you don’t leave the theatre humming a Gloria Estefan hit, it may be time to check your pulse!” – Associated Press From their humble beginnings in Cuba, Emilio and Gloria Estefan came to America and broke through all barriers to become a crossover sensation at the very top of the pop music world. But just when they thought they had it all, they
almost lost everything. From international superstardom to life-threatening tragedy, On Your Feet! takes you behind the music and inside the real story of this record-making and groundbreaking couple who, in the face of adversity, found a way to end up on their feet. Directed by two-time Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots), with choreography by Olivier Award winner Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys) and an original book by Academy Award winner Alexander Dinelaris (“Birdman”), On Your Feet! features some of the most iconic songs of the past quarter century – and one of the most inspiring stories in music history.
Raoul is suffering at the hands of his drinking and gambling, and they desperately need the financial rewards that America can give them. In a final bid to win back Christine’s love, the Phantom lures her, Raoul, and their young son, Gustave, from Manhattan to the glittering and glorious world of Coney Island – not knowing what is in store for them. The new touring production will reflect an extensive re-working of the material by an Australian creative team for the original Australian premiere in 2011. Described by Chris Boyd in The Australian as “the best thing Lloyd Webber has written in the quarter century since The Phantom of the Opera. Since its premiere in 2010, Love Never Dies has enjoyed productions worldwide in London, Australia, Denmark, Japan and Germany, as well as multiple recordings. Waitress / March 20 – 25, 2018
“The women of Waitress are changing Broadway!” – Time Magazine Brought to life by a groundbreaking all-female creative team, this irresistible new hit features original music and lyrics by six-time GRAMMY
nominee Sara Bareilles (“Brave,” “Love Song”), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (“I Am Sam”) and direction by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Pippin, Finding Neverland). “It’s an empowering musical of the highest order!” raves the Chicago Tribune. Inspired by Adrienne Shelly’s beloved film, Waitress tells the story of Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker. Jenna dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s new doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. But Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life. “Waitress is a little slice of heaven!” says Entertainment Weekly and “a monumental contribution to Broadway” according to Marie Claire. Don’t miss this uplifting musical celebrating friendship, motherhood and the magic of a well-made pie.
Something Rotten! / April 24 – 29
From the director of “Aladdin” and co-director of “The Book of Mormon” and the producer of “Rent,”
“Avenue Q” and “In the Heights,” this hilarious new musical comedy tells the story of brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom, two playwrights stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star Will Shakespeare. When a soothsayer foretells the next big thing in theater involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, the Bottom brothers set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL! With the most singing, the most dancing and the most gut-busting laughs on Broadway, it’s something wonderful…something for everyone…it’s “Something Rotten!,” “the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years” (Time Out New York!). With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, Something Rotten! Is an uproarious dose of purse Broadway fun and an irresistible ode to musicals – those dazzling creations that entertain us, inspire us and remind us that everything’s better with an exclamation point!
RENT 20th Anniversary Tour / June 5 – 10,

Miracle of Love Announces its New Funding!
Miracle of Love Inc. is the only organization in the Central Florida area with a social support n e t w o r k fo r m o n o l i n g u a l Spanish Speakers living with HIV called “Latidos”. Latidos, meaning “heartbeat”, was established in January 2017 through funding received from the Human Right’s Campaign’s HIV 360 Fellowship.

Miracle of Love Inc. (MOL) is excited to announce its recent funding award granted by The Contigo Fund. Established in 1991, Miracle of Love Inc.’s mission is to provide comprehensive, multicultural HIV/AIDS care, education, and prevention services that are effective and responsive to the Central Florida communities. Funding provided by The Contigo Fund advances MOL’s mission by helping build greater capacity to better serve more monolingual Spanish speakers living with and affected by HIV. This program was made possible by a grant from Contigo Fund, an initiative of Our Fund Foundation. According to The Center for Disease Control (CDC) 2015 HIV Surveillance Data, HIV rates of transmission have increased by 24% between 2005 and 2014 within Latino MSMs. If current trends continue, the CDC states that 1 in 4 Latino MSMs will contract HIV in their lifetime and with this rates continuing to increase, linguistically and culturally competent social support services are needed now more than ever. “This rates of increased infections are astonishing, and as the Executive Director of the oldest minority agency and a minority LGBTQ leader in the Central Florida community, this is a call to action for Miracle of Love and myself.”
The group was created after seeing the lack of social support and the need of reducing the stigma within the Spanish speaking community. With the Contigo Fund grant opportunity, the group will have a designated coordinator to build capacity in the group and will offer bilingual 3Peer Support Services to those living with HIV in Central Florida.

And there’s no way better to work those core muscles like the abs, obliques, and quadratus lumborum, etc. Performing resistance exercises on a ball is a more effective way to train for sports, i.e. track and field, martial arts, etc., since in any kind of competition you are in motion and often off balance. Here’s a routine that’ll put some “balls” in your workouts – Swiss Balls, that is! There’s no better way to train abs than by
Proceed to push up to arms’ length. Pause. Then return to starting position. Perform 8-12 reps. To make dumbbell curls, shoulder and chest presses, front and side raises more challenging, try them seated on a ball. Use lighter weights at first. Use your Swiss Ball on a mat area for added safety. Swiss Balls come in sizes small, medium and large and can be purchased at any sporting goods store. They usually come with a pump to keep them firm and bouncy!
doing crunches on a ball. Lie on your back across the ball with legs bent, feet flat and hands behind your head. Proceed by raising head and shoulders up a few inches. Pause, squeeze your abs and return to starting position. To add resistance, clasp a dumbbell or weight plate to your chest as you crunch. Perform as many reps as it takes to get a burn. Try reverse crunches by laying flat on the mat with your heels on the ball then crunch as you move the ball simultaneously by bringing your knees up toward your elbows. Don’t forget your obliques or your “side abs”. Lie on your right side over the ball, left leg over right, hands by the sides of the head, elbows out. Proceed to bend upward as high as possible. Pause, return to starting position. Perform 8-12 reps. Lie on your left side for another set bending up the other way. Swiss ball squats are a great safe way to build up butt and legs without chugging a loaded barbell across the back of your neck and shoulders. Stand with the ball between your lower back and the wall. Squat slowly down until the backs of the thighs are parallel to the floor. Pause. Then return to starting position. Perform 8-12 reps. Make push-ups more effective by using the ball. Place your hands on top of the ball with arms bent at a 90 degree angle, legs out behind you and extending up on toes.

First Time Buyer In Your Twenties?
B
Buying your first home is difficult. Especially if you’re young and looking for that perfect recipe of what’s fun, but works financially. That recipe is what Nicholas Buchanan and his team of agents at The Buchanan Portfolio Group have specialized in. Having insight into the South Tampa, Pinellas, Downtown, and Channelside Areas, Nick has developed a team of experienced Real Estate Agents that take it to the next level. “His knowledge of the area, coupled with his enthusiasm for knowing what we wanted and needed as buyers made this experience excellent,” Said one his clients after their purchase of a single family home in the Palma Ceia area. Being a first time home buyer can appear to be tricky. Knowing where to buy, and what is worth buying are only two factors to the equation. Figuring out what areas you “click” with in this

diverse and colorful city is what most young, impressionable first-time home buyers struggle with. That’s where the Buchanan Portfolio Group is different from the average joe-schmo band of real estate agents. Past client, Michelle Molen, decided to use Nick’s team for her purchase of a home in Clearwater, making the move after selling her first home in the Seminole Heights area. Molen says the Buchanan Portfolio Group is “very professional, knowledgeable and friendly… gives great advice and responds immediately with answers to any questions.” Nicks team is comprised of intelligent, proven, and ambitious agents that know more than just the area. They know the people, what’s going on, and where to buy. Being actively involved in the community, Nick is a member of the Community Redevelopment Agency of the Channel District In Tampa. Coupled with active participation in the Chamber of Commerce and the
LGBT Community, Nick is on the front line of positive change in the city. Gained with invaluable insight, Nick’s team offers one step above the rest, a servant approach to your needs and values; sharing an ideal that enough happy clients will build a stronger city for all of us to call home. Thomas Murphy, a buyers agent for The Buchanan Portfolio Group, loves the historical architecture and charm of Tampa because it reminds him of the

A strong negotiator and an aptitude for research assures everyone of Thomas’s clients goes to bed in their new homes with a smile on their face. Aaron Lager is another example of what the Buchanan Portfolio Group can offer in the form of exceptional Real Estate service. A native to Florida, Lager was drawn to the Real Estate Market in this area because of the
boundless array of what’s here in the housing market. Whether it be an historical home or modern architectural masterpiece, Aaron keeps the clients needs first in a relentless drive to find that next home. Buchanan says “there are many benefits of starting out buying a home. Besides the obvious of planting roots in a city and investing in a good home. Buying a home offers valuable incentives in the form of tax benefits, building equity, a sense of security, the ability to have income producing property in the future, and freedom to do
whatever it is you want to do with the home.” Buchanan also notes that while buying a first home might seem formidable or frightening, it is much easier than most people think, and that a simple talk with him or his agents is all that’s needed to get you started and on the right path, and they handle the rest. The Buchanan Portfolio Group has also been featured on House Hunters on the HGTV channel. The episode centers around a married couple and their agent, Buchanan, who finds their dream home, a vintage house in the heart of Palma Ceia in Tampa, Fla.
