Say Hello to Cristoph's
A fresh, new addition to Tampa's LGBT social scene by brett yancey
I
If you attended the Tampa Pride parade back in March, you may have heard that a new bar was coming to town. Less than two weeks later, Jacqueline McRae, Rick Hill, and their newly hired staff welcomed friends and patrons to Cristoph's, located at 2606 N. Armenia Avenue in the old West Tampaarea. For several years Jacqueline had wanted to open a bar that catered to the LGBT community, and when the opportunity arose, she and Rick jumped on it. They had a simple vision: not only to bringanewLGBTestablishmentto the area but to bring back a concept that the Tampa area had beenmissingforquitesometime. Cristoph's has been up and running for almost two months now, but, as with any new business venture, getting there wasn't easy. When Jacqueline and Rick took over the infamous 2606 location in January, they gave the property a much-needed facelift. Jacqueline and Rick are proud to say there's not one area of the building that was overlooked during the renovations. “We wanted people to know how much we care about this business,
Jacquelinesays. When you enter Christoph's, you're greeted by one of their handsome and friendly staff members. Once your ID has passed muster, you descend to the lower level that features a large bar, a dance floor, the DJ booth, andastageareathatwillhostsomeofthefinest entertainersintheTampaBayarea. The upstairs has been transformed into a multipurpose space that can be booked for private events, but will primarily be used to entertain Cristoph's patrons with theme parties or experiences that Tampa has never seen — or hasn't seen in quite a long time. Many of these events will cater to the LGBT bear, leather, and fantasy/fetish communities. If you haven't had a chance to check out the new venue, the Cristoph's family asks you to give them a try: “We're very excited to bring our vision to the area,” says Jacqueline. “We're excited to open our first bar that caters to the LGBT community, and we have absolutely enjoyed our experience so far.
We'vemetsomanyamazingpeople!” She and Rick give credit to their amazing Cristoph's team, who strive to make the club better each and every day. “Rick and I are so fortunate to work with a group of people who are like a family to usnow,”Jacquelinesays. The Cristoph's team has been working very hard to bring the Tampa area some great new ideas and concepts for the LGBT community. Their daily (and lengthy!) happy hour features half-off drink specials from 2pm to 9pm, and they offer a variety ofeventsandspecialseverynightoftheweek. Cristoph's is located less than 5 minutes from Hyde Park Village, 10 minutes from the Downtown Tampa neighborhoods, and the bar is only a short drive or Uber ride away from St. Petersburg and Clearwater.

Mewes would reprise the character five more times on the big screen from 1995 to 2006, becoming a sort of James Bond of mid-90's low budget film—a fast talking, foul-mouthed, oversexed but ultimately harmless and likable guy. But it's in the insanely popular award-winning podcast Jay & Silent Bob Get Old where Mewes truly shines. For nearly seven years, in what's been described as “Lake Wobegon days with anal jokes”, Jason has told the story of his tumultuous life on stage every week. Thebrand-newproductionof“TheSoundofMusic,” produced by NETworks Presentations, returns to the StrazCenterinTampa,June5-10,sponsoredinpartby Chick-Fil-ATampaBayandtheTampaBayTimes. “The Sound of Music” features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, suggested by The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp. The beloved musical story of Maria and the von Trapp Family will once again thrill audiences with its ® ® ® Tony , Grammy and Academy Award –winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss”andthetitlesong. It was a pleasure to sit down with Adam Ross Glickman (Herr Zeller, u/s Max Detweiler), Florida native, for this Hotspots Exclusive interview. This is Adam's National tour debut, but his former credits include: The Boys Next Door (Barry), ShowChoir the Musical! (with Broadway's Christiane Noll), Love's Labour's Lost (Moth). He is also a Billboard Charting Songwriter, and Jimmy Awards Nominee.
Adam Ross At what age did you begin singing/acting? My parents put me in every sport possible, but I was never good at any of them. When I was 11, I auditioned for the choir and got all the solos; I really liked it. I was then sent to performing arts camp and Ifellinlove. Fromthenon, itwashistory.
What was your first Professional/Paid gig? In Oxford Mississippi I did “Love Labors Lost” and played Moth. I sprained my ankle right before the live shows and I had to change my character and give him a limp. I was in excruciating pain, but the showmustgoon.
Other than this show, what role has been your favorite to play and why? My favorite role to play was Sweeny Todd in Sweeny Todd in High School. I was nominated for the Jimmy Nederlanders Award for this role. I love Sondheim and the darkness and the depth of this character. I hope to play Sweeny Todd again one day. I also
loved Barry in “The Boys Next Door.” He is a schizophrenic and I found it hard to play, but it was sochallenging.

2015 marked the 50 anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful moviemusicalinhistory.
You are a billboard charting songwriter, when did you start writing music, and how did that come about? When I first moved to New York, in 2015, I started writing music. I go the job to survive, but I fell in love with writing. I still work on it every day and hope to releaseafullprojectinayears'time. YouwerebornandraisedinFortLauderdale.
Do you get back often and how excited are you to be touring in Florida? Idogetbackoften, becauseIamsuperclosewithmy family. I am so excited about performing at the BrowardCenterasit'sthefirsttimemygrandmother will see me perform professionally, and it is the placewhereIsawmyfirstmusical;Showboat.
In the words of Ted Chapin, President of Rodgers & Hammerstein, “I waited for a moment when we could rediscover The Sound of Music as it was originally created. Because of the enormous successofthefilm, fewwereawarethatitstartedlife as a hit Broadway show—and a very big hit at that! The artists behind this production embraced what the authors wrote, looked at it all through modern eyes and, in so doing, found depth and resonance that has been recognized by critics and audiences across the country. It's like visiting an old friend but finding yourself surprised as well. It's also a reminderofwhythisshowissuchanevergreen.”
What should the South Florida audiences expect out of this touring company of “The Sound Of Music”?

It's beautiful, and the whole creative team are Tony Award winning. The costumes are straight from Austria and Germany. The lighting is amazing and the actors are a joy to work with. I think the show is like the movie but it's more relatable to a modern audience. One of the lines I love that mother Abbott says is “How do you choose to spend your love?” and I think it's a message everyone should think of andtakeawayfromtheshow. For more information on Adam, either go to his website at: adamrossofficial.com or follow him on FacebookorInstagram/adamrossofficial. “The Sound of Music” enjoyed extraordinary success as a live television production when “The Sound of Music” Live! aired on NBC in December of 2013 and was seen by more than 44 million people.
“The Sound of Music” will play the Straz Center's Morsani Hall, June 5-10. The Parliament House will once again be featuring a number of the top girls from RuPaul's Drag Race during Gay Days weekend in Orlando. We chose to sit down with the incredibly talented Aquaria for this exclusive Hotspots interview.
Have you been to Parliament House before, either in or out of drag? I have never. But I've seen that many girls perform there, and I am very excited to make my way to Orlando.
You're infamous for your fashion. Have you planned what you will be wearing at Parliament House? I wish I had. But I am definitely going to wear something that is weather appropriate: I always keep my costumes in line with what I am performing, but I'm sure I will show some skin in Orlando. And, trust me, you will not be disappointed.
Are you excited to be performing with your sisters, Miz Cracker and The Vixen?
Aquaria Dawning The RuPaul's Drag Race contender makes her Orlando debut at Parliament House.
I am so not in the loop on who's performing. but I love working with the two of them. Now that I know they'll be there, I'm looking forward to it even more. They are my “Untucked” drama sisters.
What should the thousands of Gay Disney fans expect from your performance at Parliament House? I love to keep the energy up. I am a club queen, so I know how to engage my audience and have a good time. I love to feel off the crowd's energy.
Why should you win “RuPaul's Drag Race” Season 10? Do you have cable? And do you watch? The proof is in the pudding, America. For more information on Aquaria, check out her website:

Kitana Gemini got her start in the club-kid scene over a decade ago and began snagging regular gigs in the clubs shortly afterward. Since then she's worked her way up to become a featured cast memberatSouthernNightsOrlando. Gemini is renowned for her charity work. Girlfriend's got a big ol' heart! But it's her nonstop brainstorming — and birthing — of theme parties and events, including Orlando Drag Race Live, that ishertrueclaimtofame. As part of Southern Night's Gays of Days weekend (I see what you did there!), the club, her castmates, and all Kitana's fans will be celebrating her birthday on Friday, June 1. I sat down with her in advanceofthebigday.
What was the first drag show you ever saw? It was at the Parliament House here in Orlando, and the entertainer was Tiffany McCray. I remember my eyes being as big as the moon, my heart racing, and my mouth being open for her whole performance because it was an amazing experience. I was shocked, but in a good way, and loved every minute of it.
When did you decide you wanted to do drag, and when did you realize it would be a profession? I started out as a backup dancer and choreographer for Mizz Cori and a few other queens, and then decided a year later to try performingmyselfasthelead. I put together a mini dance group. We did a production to Britney Spears' “Slave for You,” and

we killed it. Everyone loved it, and I started performing once a month in the scene. From there, I grewasanentertainerandbecameknownasKitana — the name of my favorite character from Mortal Kombat, thevideogame.
Who is your drag mother?
“Kitana is the name of my favorite character from Mortal Kombat.”
I was lucky to have two drag mothers. One is Nazhoni, and the other is a duo: Power and Avalon Infiniti. I've learned a lot from them and love them dearly.
Besides those two — three, really — who's your favorite queen? My favorite RuPaul's Drag Race queens will always beRoxxxyAndrews,GingerMinj, andShangela. Besides my own drag family, I have three favorite local queens at the moment: Kaija Adonis, because we pretty much started drag at the same time, grew up in front of each other, and have shared so many wonderful years together on stage; Carbon Cavalli, who I've seen grow from an infant baby princess into a makeup powerhouse of a performer; and Venus Envy, who I've seen blossom from a shy nerd in the corner into a seasoned and respected bio-queen performer.
What's your favorite number to perform and why? My favorite numbers to perform — I have two — are “Untouched” by The Veronicas and “What's My Name”fromDisney's“Descendants2”soundtrack.
What's the best thing that's happened to you in drag? When I won “Drag Race Live” four years ago at Sawmill [Camping Resort, in Dade City] and got to meetRuPaul.
What makes you stand out from other queens? I think the thing that makes me unique is that I'm a combination of drag, club kid, and old school. I'm not afraid to break boundaries, I perform to the beat of my owndrum, andI'malwayschanging, alwaysgrowing.
What does the future hold? To be honest, I'm not sure what the future has in store for me. But right now I'm working on a variety of projects, and I just hope they all are successes. I'm currently getting things together for Orlando Munsters Live (#OML) Season 2, Orlando Drag Race Live (#ODRL) Season 5, and All Stars 2 along with Tampa Drag Race Live coming soon to Southern NightsTampa. I'm also joining a few more community club gigs throughout the week, so my schedule is full. And I couldn'tbeanyhappier— ormorestressed!

It seems like every one-horse town in America has its own Pride celebration these days. Which is fantastic, of course. It's a sign of how far our LGBTQ communityhascome. But the flood of Pride events (especially in June) can also make it a little hard for a city or town to stand out from the crowd, to make its Pride seem special. NotforSt. Petersburg. St. PetePrideisspecial. With more than 200,000 participants, St. Pete Pride is Florida's — and one of the country's — largest. Andit'sgrowntothatsizeinjust16years. It's hard to beat a nighttime Pride parade. The evening hour is perfect for our Florida climate, but it also provides an opportunity for spectacular, dazzlingly lighted showmanship. Last year 40 floats and more than 100 contingents made their way down Bayshore Drive, including dancers, soldiers, drag queens, and drill teams such as popular favorites the ROTC (Righteously OutrageousTwirlingCorps). More important, the parade isn't the culmination of St. Pete's Pride festivities. It's surrounded by events that guarantee Pride-goers are participants, not mere spectators, such as the
hours-long celebration that precedes the parade and the massive Pride Street Festival that follows onSunday. St. Pete Pride is totally worth traveling for, which iswhysomanydo.
