communication, many kids feel that the only way to avoid being abused is by suicide.

The old adage “kids will be kids may be a dangerous falsehood. One of the most heartbreaking lessons that any child has to learn is how to stand up to bullies. Dealing with bullies has always been an issue that students have had to face. Nowadays, parents are realizing that not taking childhood and teenaged bullying seriously can cost their kids more than a cool reputation. In some cases, modern-day bullying is costing children their lives! This is because bullies have been far more clever and pervasive about their tactics. In the past, a bully used to single out their target with name-calling and by physically attacking them. Bullies often acted alone. Today, bullies can gang up with others in order to torment their targets. They are able to do this with the use of the electronic devices that are so common.

Parents simply can't ignore bullying anymore, or write it off as childhood behavior that will go away with time. Parents need to teach their kids how to stand up to bullies - to prepare their kids with as many assertiveness skills as possible. This decreases the child's chances of becoming a target for bullies. Parents might avoid teaching their kids assertiveness skills, fearing that they might be preparing their kids to become over-aggressive. However, parents need to understand that there is a difference between showing aggression and showing assertiveness. Beyond this, parents need to understand that bullies are predatory. They never select assertive or equally strong kids to target; they select those who come across as weak or passive. Assertiveness skills teach kids to show personal pride. They allow kids to develop personal boundaries, regarding how they will be treated. These are lessons that are not only important to learn to navigate school, but these are skills that are crucial to navigate adult situations, such as the workplace, marriage, and parenting.

It's very common for bullies to use the internet and mobile telephones in order to verbally, socially and emotionally abuse their victims. In the past, if bullying became too much of an issue for a child, then the child could be removed from a school and make new friends at another. Today, since bullying usually takes place on worldwide forms of

11

One of the most important yet easy assertiveness skills that a parent can teach their kids is to hold their head up straight and look others in the eyes. Bullies like to target those who appear to have low self-esteem. When a kid looks people in the eyes, they send a non-verbal message that they aren't afraid of others. When they hold their head up high, they send a message that they respect themselves. However, there are kids who have healthy self-esteems and yet find that they become targeted for bullying. What can a parent do to teach seemingly healthy kids assertiveness skills to overcome bullying based upon jealousy? Parents need to have lots of talks with their kids, to help them understand that this type of bullying is rooted in jealousy and has nothing to do with the child personally. Beyond this, parents need to reach out to school authorities and to the parents of the bully, to work together to address the root issues that are causing bullying Another set of assertiveness skills to help children stand up to bullies is verbal communication skills. Parents need to teach children to speak in a tone of voice that is even, yet strong. Parents also need to teach

12

their kids that there are times when the child should say "No!" and the child should say it like they mean it. Parents can teach their kids a variety of assertiveness skills that allow their kids to behave mannerly, while sending a message to other kids that they are not to be messed with or targeted for bullying. As you can see it is important to educate you child to know how to stand up to bullies. By making them aware of what they can do and how they react will definitely prepare them to be able to take a stand.

BY SALLISHA NOEL You can be your own best friend.

something you can do.

Who are you with all the time? Yourself.

Ask people like mum, dad, grandma, your teacher, family friends or your friends what they like about you. Or talk to a trusted adult about how you feel.

So, take some time to really get to know yourself.

If you like yourself, others will probably like you too.

Start by asking yourself some questions.

If someone doesn't like you don't worry - you can't expect everyone to like you. After all, you don't like everyone either, do you?

Sounds weird? Think about it.

Who am I? · · · · · · ·

Am I a friendly person? Am I a positive person who looks forward to each day? Am I a good listener? What am I good at? What do I like to do in my spare time? What do I like about my looks? Do I like myself?

You will have times when you mess up or feel ashamed about things you may have said or done, but you're still OK as a person - believe it or not that happens to everyone, even parents and teachers! If you are feeling sad and can't seem to find things that you like about yourself, here is

You can show what a nice person you are by always being pleasant and good mannered even to people you don't like.

Remember Friends are always nice to each other. Respect your friends and they'll respect you. I like friends a lot. Encourage one another to be good. Nice people are usually good people to be your friends. Deserting your friends is very unkind. Sticking up for one another is what good friends do.

We look to meet others who will “make” us happy and we work very hard to achieve what we think will bring us happiness. But we seem to be on a lifelong quest to find something that is elusive and undefined. We say, “If only it were this way, I would be happy” or,”If only I had that, I would be contented.” In the meantime, we overlook all the little opportunities for happiness that come to us each day. Have you ever noticed that it is often the small comforts, the simple pleasures that soothe us the most and make us feel that all is right in the world? Maybe it's a favorite food, listening to a favorite song or an unexpected kindness that makes our day. In the moment that we experience the simplest pleasures, we are not thinking about our quest for happiness or worrying that we may never find it. We are simply enjoying the moment and feeling alive.

Here are five things I usually do: 1. Take a break. Relax with family and friends. 2. Cuddle up with an inspirational book. It is a good way to relax. 3. Create my own at home spa. Choose some soft music, light some candles and get “carried away”. 4. Go for a run, it is a great way to relieve the stress of the day. 5. Spend some time with my love one.

In child’s early years, they have lots of supervision and guidance to teach them basic skills, such as sharing. But the older they get, the more time they are spending with friends out of direct ear shot, if not direct visual sight. At school, at sports, even at church, there is much that happens between and among friends that we do not see. It can be hard to make sure that what is happening with your child and his or her friends is appropriate. That said, we can continue to influence and affect our children's friendships.

While we may not be able to guide every friend interaction as our children move through the elementary school years, we can continue to talk to our children about their friendships, coach them through interactions, set up safe environments for our children to interact with their friends and get to know those friends (and the parents) ourselves. This level of involvement and communication allows us to see the dynamic of particular friendships - and see when friendships are really positive and when they may become problematic.

If a friendship does have a mis communication or the dynamic becomes an issue for any number of reasons, choosing how to help your child deal with the issues can be tricky. You child needs to learn how to handle many of these friend dynamics on their own. Letting Mom take care of everything isn't always the way to go.

Coaching your child through situations, even role playing some responses, can help your child figure out the best way to manage their own friendships. We as adults know that not every friendship lasts forever, and it's sad and sometimes hard for us to accept that as adults. Imagine for a kid! Whether by natural attrition of attention and change of interests or a specific event, some friendships don't last.

Helping your child through the end of a friendship can be one of the most heartwrenching things a parent does. It's a kind of grief that must be processed, not dismissed; your child's hurt is real! "Oh, you'll find another friend," is as hollow sounding to your child as it would be to you. Letting the grief run it's natural course while trying to direct emotions constructively - and communicating to remind your child of the terrific friendship skills he or she does have - can help both of you get through it.

Friendships are a beautiful part of life, and learning about friendships and how to be a good friend can be a life-long process. Fostering healthy friendships in your children's lives, and helping them get through challenging periods with friends is part of parenting. It's not always easy, but if you and your child approach friendships with the idea of being the friend you want to have, the joys likely will far outweigh the challenges.

can spot it. There's nothing like running down to the Savanna with family and friends to have fun at the annual Easter picnic by the beach. Having mini competitions; biggest kite, smallest kite, kite with the longest tail, best 'boardie' and even 'coco riggie'. Breaking bush and hopping over stones feeling both thrilled and horrified to look for that special kite when 'e cut'. There's nothing like flying kite during Easter season. Rushing home from school in the afternoon to make sure that your kite still up, And staring at the blazing sun till the Mr. decide to 'duck' behind the clouds. There's nothing like shouting 'gimmie a heave!' to your 'padna' when you sense a heavy breeze coming, and slacking and pulling your twine so that your kite doesn't fall. There's nothing like waking early in the morning to put up your kite before going to school; so excited about kite flying, that your kite up since January, so passionate about your kite that you're in school and you're still peeping out the window to see if you

There's nothing like the intense feeling of excitement when you're hiding from mommy after a long afternoon of 'drevaying behind kite' or when the neighbor comes over to complain that 'kite singing in she head whole night like mosquito' and you're in a corner saying to yourself, 'Ah doh care nah, is kite ah flyin'.
