Ne place sau nu, rutina pune ståpânire pe existen¡a noastrå. Acelea¿i drumuri zilnice, acelea¿i chipuri, acelea¿i subiecte de discu¡ie. Rutina duce la obosealå ¿i automatisme, såråce¿te via¡a, scade randamentul ¿i creativitatea muncii, mole¿e¿te rela¡iile de cuplu. Treptat, devenim apatici în fa¡a spectacolului lumii. Sim¡ind aceastå capcanå, mul¡i cautå remedii. Unul dintre ele este aventura. Nu vorbim, aici, de cea extraconjugalå, nici de afaceri aventuroase, ci, pur ¿i simplu, despre turism de aventurå – o combina¡ie de naturå ¿i adrenalinå, o provocare pentru care avem aptitudini – unele cultivate, altele refulate. Genetic, noi, oamenii am fost dintotdeauna o specie de cuceritori de spa¡iu geografic, de pionieri ¿i exploratori. Så ne låsåm, deci, purta¡i pe aripile aventurii. Så pornim spre destina¡ii inedite, unde ne pot pândi obstacole, uneori, pericole, unde ne a¿teaptå surprize, provocåri ¿i unde putem tråi sentimentul descoperirii. Nu vom ¿ti precis în ce loc ¿i care sunt dificultå¡ile care ne a¿teaptå pe traseu, în ce loc ne va prinde noaptea sau ce feste ne poate juca vremea. Dar, toate acestea sunt ingrediente ale aventurii. Nu vom avea parte de siguran¡a ¿i confortul excursiilor organizate. Chiar dacå vom avea un ghid, va trebui så ne asumåm o parte din incertitudini ¿i riscuri; asta reprezintå tot o parte a aventurii.

No matter whether we like it or not, routine extends its reign over our lives. We go the same way every day, we see the same faces, and we hash and rehash the same topics. Routine, however, results in weariness and mechanical habits; it depletes life of its meaning, cuts down efficiency and creativity of our work, and weakens the bonds of a couple. Little by little, we lose interest for the show of the world. Aware of this trap, many people look for a cure. One of the possible cures is adventure. We don't mean love or business affairs, we simply suggest taking up the challenge of extreme travels – a mixture of nature and adrenaline, a challenge we are endowed with both educated and suppressed capabilities. By birth, we, humans, have been always a species of conquerors of the geographical space, a species of pioneers and explorers. Well then, let's be carried away on the wings of adventure. Let's start on the way to new destinations, where we obstacles, sometimes even dangers, may be lurking, where we will be facing surprises and challenges and where we can experience the feeling of discovery. We will not be able to know exactly where and what dangers await us on our way, where we will have to spend the night or what nasty tricks the weather may play on us. We must keep in mind that such are the ingredients of adventure. We will not enjoy the safety and cosiness of organized travels, despite having a guide to accompany us, we will have to take on a certain amount of uncertainty and risks, as they, too, are part of the adventure.

Totu¿i, mereu va råmâne ceva de explorat, necunoscut, chiar ¿i în România cea atât de cutreieratå în lung ¿i-n lat. Depinde de scara ¿i de unghiul prin care percepem tot ce se aflå în jurul nostru. The prying eye of satellites catches every detail above and under ground – bathyscaphes scan the ocean bottom, mountaineers stand in line to climb the highest peaks in the world. However, there will be always something left to explore, some yet unknown corner, even in Romania, this

Defri¿ând våi pråpåstioase, unde nimeni nu a påtruns vreodatå, au descoperit labirintul unor canioane care nu au våzut vreodatå lumina soarelui, au coborât cascade ¿i au traversat dorne cu apå de cristal. country travelled all over. All depends on the scale and angle of our view on our surroundings. Years ago, my job had me travelling in the Cåpå¡ânii mountains, for geological explorations. I discovered then that the entire right slope of the Lotru, between Stan’s Valley and the Ursu Mountain is in fact a wide terra incognita, with wild and rough valleys cutting through the mountain along a height difference of almost 1,500 metres, with tiered waterfalls, tumbling down more than 100 m deep, forgotten glades, nameless tablelands with mountain goats still grazing impassibly, and lush vegetation, where one can easily get lost. I found untouched and lost wilderness spots in the steep cliffs of Piatra Craiului, of Piule-Iorgovanu and Mehedin¡i mountains. Since the canyonrafting fever has started to invade Romania, fans and promoters of this type of extreme adventure travels have initiated extensive research actions. Clearing abrupt valleys, never before walked by any human, they discovered a maze of canyons that had never before seen a ray of sun; they descended waterfalls and crossed whirlpools with crystal-clear water. Reason to be amazed were encountered by divers, too, who ventured in the depths of the Black Sea and of Romanian lakes, to say nothing about the endless geographical surprises the world of karst and caves and caverns offer to our explorers.

stumble over places that make our hearts jump or our knees a little shaky, it means that we are on the wrong trail. Adventure's salt and pepper are the call of the unknown and the unexpected and the challenge of danger, of course in reasonable amounts. The unexpected, the dangers, can be anticipated and planned based on alternative scenarios. This means that sometimes one needs courage, but not the brainless, "come what may" type of courage. It is not fair for us to jump head over heels into some risky undertaking, leaving it to providence to straighten things when we get into trouble nor is it right for us to be carried home by the mountain rescue rangers on a stretcher. Courage means to know what to do when you are afraid.

The expansion tank – which supplies the life saving air flow, the neoprene suit – which is vital for keeping us warm, the life jacket – that keeps us effortlessly afloat, all those are quite expensive, but divers know exactly what they are really worth. Special hobnails and ice axes, a weatherproof tent to withstand any blizzard, heavy boots, padded jackets, are the overall equipment which is a must for every tourist who is looking for some extreme experience on the snow-covered mountain peaks, and acquiring such equipment is s quite expensive job. Rafting down stormy waters is also an option, for which one can choose either an expensive kayak, or a somewhat cheaper rubber boat. But people seeking a higher shot of adrenaline may find it at lower costs, too, if they follow their passion to wander through yet pathless valleys and peaks. S

This arch, like other strange looking rocks, is also the result of the disintegration and dissolution of conglomerates, which have rich limestone content as well. But the most impressive setting will open before our eyes after we emerge again in the alpine free space. To the north we can admire the expanse of a row of serrated battlements, the result of an extensive fault that has split the massif formed of conglomerates.

Mun¡ii Fågåra¿ului Alpii Transilvaniei alcåtuiesc o creastå de 70 km, cuprinså între împrejurimile Bra¿ovului ¿i Valea Oltului. Comparativ cu strålucirea festivå a calcarelor din Piatra Craiului, Mun¡ii Fågåra¿ului (compu¿i din gnaise, amfibolite ¿i alte roci cristaline) au un aspect auster. Stråbåtut de Transfågårå¿an ¿i de numerose poteci marcate, Mun¡ii Fågåra¿ului candideazå, ¿i ei, la titlul de bulevard turistic. Crossed by the Transfågårå¿an road and by numerous marked ways, the Fågåra¿ Mountains also candidates for the title of tourist boulevard. The idea is deceiving for the crest asperity is good for escapades full of emotions and satisfactions.

Custura Sårå¡ii reprezintå cea mai sålbaticå ¿i mai dificilå sec¡iune din traseul marcat de-a lungul crestei principale a Fågåra¿ilor. Haosul geologic este total, iar måre¡ia alpinå – cople¿itoare. Custura se desfå¿oarå, de la est spre vest, între ªaua Cleopatrei (2.355 m) ¿i Vârful ªerbota (2.331 m). Din ªaua Cleopatrei vom porni spre vest, pe poteca marcatå cu bandå ro¿ie, ocolind Vârful Sårå¡ii (2.365 m) prin nord, apoi coborând domol, printr-o zonå înierbatå. Spre stânga, se deschide varianta de ocolire a Custurii Sårå¡ii, pentru care este indicat så optåm pe vreme rea (marcatå cu bandå galbenå, aceasta trece prin Cåldarea Pietroaså a Negoiului). Urmând traseul marcat cu bandå ro¿ie, dupå un coborâ¿ mai pronun¡at, vom ajunge în ªaua Esticå a Sårå¡ii (2.196 m). Depå¿ind cele câteva ¡ancuri care ne a¡in calea ¿i vârfule¡ul care desparte

The Sårå¡ii Ridge (7) The Sårå¡ii glacial ridge is the most savage and difficult section of the route marked along the main crest of the Fågåra¿ Mountains. The geological chaos is total, the alpine greatness is overwhelming. From East to West, the peak islying between Cleopatra Saddle (2,355 m) and ªerbota Peak (2,331 m). From Cleopatra Saddle, we shall go toward West, taking the red bandmarked path, rounding the Sårå¡ii Peak (2,365 m) to the North, further on softly going downward, through a grass-covered area. Toward left, there opens the Sårå¡ii ridge rounding version, recommended on bad weather (it is marked by a yellow band and it passes through Negoiu's Stony Hollow). Following the route marked by a red band, after an abrupt down-going, we shall reach the Sårå¡ii Eastern Saddle (2,196 m). Passing by the few crags on our way and the small peak separating the Eastern saddle from the western one (2,176 m), we shall take a path among numerous crags. The way supposes a hard going up at which end we shall reach ªerbota Peak where, close to 80 m toward W-NW, we shall find a blue-band marked path that accompanies the ªerbota Edge, going upward to Negoiu Chalet (1,546 m) and following the route: Negoiu Chalet – Cleopatra Saddle, a blue-marked triangle (about 2 and half hours). The peak area may be crossed within about 2 hours and, from ªerbota Peak, downward to Negoiu Chalet, we have to estimate almost other 2 hours. The tour may be estimated for 1 hour climbing to Negoiu Peak (2,535 m), the second peak of Fågåra¿ Mountains, by keeping the main crest of Cleopatra Saddle, toward the opposite side of Sårå¡ii Saddle.

Netedului Saddle – Vânåtarea lui Buteanu Peak (8)

ªaua esticå de cea vesticå (2.176 m), ne vom deplasa pe o cårare ce petrece numeroase ¡ancuri. Drumul presupune un urcu¿ sus¡inut, la finele cåruia vom ajunge pe Vârful ªerbota unde, la aproape 80 de m spre V-NV, vom întâlni poteca marcatå cu bandå albastrå ce înso¡e¿te Muchia ªerbotei, urcând de la Cabana Negoiu. Traseul poate fi parcurs în circuit, având drept punct de plecare Cabana Negoiu (1.546 m) ¿i urmând ruta: Cabana Negoiu – ªaua Cleopatrei, pe triunghi albastru (aproximativ 2 ore ¿i jumåtate). Custura se traverseazå în circa 2 ore, iar din Vârful ªerbota, în coborâre, pânå la Cabana Negoiu trebuie estimate încå aproape 2 ore. Circuitul poate fi combinat cu o ascensiune de 1 orå, pânå pe Vârful Negoiu (2.535 m), al doilea pisc al Fågåra¿ului, men¡inândune pe creasta principalå din ªaua Cleopatrei, în direc¡ia opuså Custurii Sårå¡ii.

Another exceptional route in Fågåra¿ Mountains, partly marked, supposes to conquer Muchia Buteanului (Buteanu Edge), between Netedului Saddle (2,234 m) and Vânåtarea lui Buteanu Peak (2,507 m), the sole peak over 2,500 m on the Western side. The way is abrupt on the maximum going up segment which may reach a Northern transFågåra¿ crest, either by facing the edge or by avoiding the more difficult portions, each time from the West. The place charm and geography (technically, being on Vânåtarea lui Buteanu Peak, it is easier to go downward by another way) will make us to take the way as a circuit, too, the start point being Bâlea Lake Chalet (2,027 m). The blue-band marking will direct us toward Netedului Saddle, which we shall find within about three quarters of an hour after our having left the chalet. Once there, we shall leave the marked path and shall take the crest toward South. After a gentle climbing, we shall notice four small peaks, the fourth one extending itself toward South by a sharp portion at which end we enter a small saddle, from which there begins Arpå¿el Valley, a rocky, impressive. Passing by another peak of modest size, we shall reach, among cliffs, the Western side. The route goes on by a horizontal, cutting and

ªaua Netedului – Vârful Vânåtarea lui Buteanu (8) Un alt traseu excep¡ional din Fågåra¿, par¡ial marcat, presupune cucerirea Muchiei Buteanului, pe por¡iunea dintre ªaua Netedului (2.234 m) ¿i Vârful Vânåtarea lui Buteanu (2.507 m), singurul cre¿tet de peste 2.500 m al versantului nordic. Drumul se avântå pe segmentul de altitudine maximå pe care o poate atinge vreo creastå nord-fågårå¿eanå, fie sfidând muchia, fie evitând

ragged segment long of about 60 m. We conquer the narrow summit of the Inclined Tower (2,401 m) which threatens us from the East by a stately vertical wall. We go on, touched by the small saddle which cheaply lies at the feet of a 4-5 m righ vertical wall. We shall avoid it by its Western side. At a higher level, we shall give the due honour to the uneven edge which, here and there, has a 45 degrees slope. Further on, we shall relax by the way over the more rounded off segment that launches us toward Vânåtarea lui Buteanu Peak. From Netedului Saddle up to the peak we need two hours maximum. The route difficulty grade is 1A in summer time. It would be better to use a safety cord when on the most difficult portions. The sight from Vânåtarea lui Buteanu Peak, both toward the Northern steep slopes and toward the main crest (with Moldoveanu and Negoiu dominating the horizons in opposite directions) may not be easily forgotten. Without exaggeration, the panorama from Buteanu may enter a top of the first five belvedere points in our country. From the peak, to close the circuit, we guide ourselves by the bluecross marking, toward the Goat Saddle (2,315 m). From the lower part, along the whole route, the blue and calm mirror of the glaciar lake Capra (The Goat) clears up our way. From Netedului Saddle, we may return to the chalet by the blue-triangle marked path. On our way

Marcajul cu bandå albastrå ne va direc¡iona spre ¿aua Netedului, pe care o vom gåsi cam în trei sferturi de orå, de la plecarea de la cabanå. Odatå ajun¿i acolo, vom påråsi poteca marcatå, abordând creasta spre sud. Dupå o ascensiune linå, vom observa patru vârfule¡e, cel de al patrulea prelungindu-se spre sud printr-o por¡iune ascu¡itå la capåtul cåreia se intrå într-o micå ¿a, din care se desprinde, spre Valea Arpå¿el, o vâlcea stâncoaså, impresionantå. Depå¿ind un alt pisc de dimensiuni modeste vom trece, printre col¡uri de stâncå, pe versantul vestic. Drumul continuå cu un segment orizontal, incisiv ¿i col¡uros, de circa 60 m lungime. Subjugåm sprânceana îngustå a Turnului Plecat (2.401 m) care ne amenin¡a, din est, cu un falnic perete vertical. Avansåm înduio¿a¡i de mica ¿a care zåbove¿te umilå la baza unui perete vertical de 4-5 m înål¡ime. Îl vom ocoli prin partea vesticå. Aventuri la înål¡ime Adventures at High Altitude lui Buteanu. Din ªaua Netedului pânå pe vârf råzbatem în maximum 2 ore. Gradul de dificultate al traseului este de 1A, pe timp de varå. Nu ar strica så utilizåm o coardå de asigurare, pe por¡iunile mai dificile. Priveli¿tea de pe Vânåtarea lui Buteanu – atât abrupturile nordice cât ¿i cresta principalå (cu Moldoveanu ¿i Negoiu dominând orizonturile în direc¡ii opuse) nu poate fi u¿or uitatå. Fårå a exagera, panorama de pe Buteanu se poate înscrie într-un top al primelor cinci puncte de belvedere din ¡ara noastrå. De pe vârf, pentru a închide circuitul, ne ghidåm dupå marcajul cruce albastrå, înspre ªaua Caprei (2.315 m). Din partea de jos, pe tot parcursul, oglinda albastrå ¿i lini¿titå a lacului glaciar Capra ne limpeze¿te calea. Din ªaua Netedului, putem reveni la cabanå pe poteca marcatå cu triunghi albastru. La întoarcere, nu ne trebuie mai mult de 1 orå ¿i jumåtate pentru ispråvirea cålåtoriei.

The Retezat Mountains (9) Most of the interesting places to be seen in the Retezat Mountains can be reached on marked tourist paths. However, we could not be happy leaving the universe made of granite and lakes of the Retezatului before having seen the wilderness enclosure constituted by the Scientific Reservation GemeneleTåul Negru. For this purpose we need from the very start a permit from the Romanian Academy - the Committee for Natural Monuments. It is a piece of red tape, but absolutely necessary, as it opens for us the way into a sanctuary protected by law ever since 1935, a sanctuary that could have been preserved only due to the constraint of extremely severe preservation measures. This permit grants a small number of people the right to cross the reservation only once, at a given period of time, denying them at the same time the right to camp. lacuri al Retezatului dacå nu vedem oaza de sålbåticie care este Rezerva¡ia ªtiin¡ificå Gemenele-Tåul Negru. Pentru asta avem nevoie, la plecare, de autoriza¡ia Academiei Române Comisia Monumentelor Naturii. Este un obstacol birocratic dar necesar, cåci intråm astfel într-un sanctuar protejat prin lege încå din anul 1935 ¿i care s-a påstrat numai datoritå impunerii unor måsuri draconice de conservare. Autoriza¡ia då dreptul unui numår liminat de persoane, într-o perioadå anume, så parcurgå o singurå datå, fårå drept de campare, rezerva¡ia. Venind dinspre Lacul Bucura putem coborî spre lacul Gemenele. În creastå intersectåm marcajul cu påtrat ro¿u al rezerva¡iei ¿i coborâm mai întâi la Tåul ªtirbului, un lac cuibårit printre blocuri col¡uroase de granit. De aici poteca ne poartå printre jepi ¿i mici tinoave mustind de apå, totul fiind acoperit de o vegeta¡ie luxuriantå. Dupå o orå de coborâre ajungem la Tåul Gemenele, un lac de o mare frumuse¡e. Din marea deaså de jepi råsar exemplare falnice de Pinus Cembra (zâmbrul), un relict glaciar. Dupå ce ocolim lacul pe malul nordic, o potecå abia vizibilå se strecoarå printre jepi ¿i stâncårii, spre o altå minune a rezerva¡iei, Tåul Negru. Din acest loc putem coborî pânå la Casa Academiei de la Gemenele, unde, cu siguran¡å, paznicii ne vor cere… scrisorile de acreditare. Pentru a face un circuit complet, cu încuviin¡area paznicilor, putem urca de aici direct în Vârful Retezat, peste sålbatica Fa¡å a Retezatului. Tura poate dura 10-12 ore.

marking of the reservation and at first we will climb down to the Tåul ªtirbului (the Pool of the Toothless Man), a little lake nestled among craggy granite blocks. From here on, the path will lead us through knee pines and small bogs, everything covered by lush vegetation. After having made an hour-long way down, we reach the Tåul Gemenele (the Twins Pool), an extremely beautiful lake. Majestic samples of Pinus Cembra (zâmbrul), a relic of the glacial epoch, pierce the dense blanket of knee pines with their slender trunks. After having walked round the lake on its northern shore, we meet another hardly visible path that meanders through knee pines and rocks and boulders, heading towards another marvel of the reservation, Tåul Negru (the Black Pool). Once arrived back at the Tåul Negru (The Black Pool), we can descend down to the House of the Academy near the Gemenele (The Twins), were we can be sure that the guards will ask us to show them… our credentials. If we plan to make a full round tour, we'll have to get the guards' approval and then we can climb straight up to the Vârful Retezat (the Chopped Off Peak), passing over the wild Face of the Retezatului. Our tour may last some 10-12 hours.

The Piule-Iorgovanu Ridge (Small Retezat) (10) South of Retezat massif, very wellknown for its topaz lakes, icy valleys, lots of torrents and springs, there is a calcareous, imposing massif called Piule-Iorgovanu. Somehow more modest in largeness and height than its neighbour, is more wild. First, it is very dry, for the mountain karst mushroom swallows all the waters, gather them into its depths, further on sending them, through mysterious ways, precisely to Izvorul Cernei (Cerna Spring). For missing water, chalets and tourism have avoided the place. And here, limestone renders the area specificity. Glaciers and high floods have cut an extremely abrupt relief in the limestone, with vertical walls, towers, chimneys, debris rivers, natural bridges. There are many caves, and much more swallow holes. Here is the second perfectly vertical natural well in Romania. Its total size is of 136 m, remarkable being the fact that, at the depth level of 115 m, we still see the sky.

Creasta Piule–Iorgovanu (Retezatul Mic) (10) La sudul masivului Retezat, bine cunoscut pentru lacurile lui de topaz, våile glaciare, bogå¡ia de toren¡i ¿i izvoare, se aflå un masiv calcaros, impunåtor, denumit Piule-Iorgovanu. Ceva mai modest ca întindere ¿i înål¡ime decât vecinul såu, acest masiv este, în compensa¡ie, cu mult mai sålbatic. Este foarte arid, pentru cå buretele carstic al muntelui înghite toate apele, le adunå în måruntaiele sale, pentru a le trimite apoi, pe cåi misterioase, tocmai la Izvorul Cernei. Din cauza lipsei apei, cabanele ¿i turismul l-au ocolit. ªi aici, calcarele sunt cele care dau specificul locurilor. Ghe¡arii ¿i viiturile au dåltuit în calcar un relief extrem de abrupt, cu pere¡i verticali, turnuri, hornuri, râuri de grohoti¿, poduri naturale. Existå multe
