The basics

Do you want a dress or are you feeling more of a pantsuit vibe for your big day? A striking white power suit will bring out your inner girlboss whilst a shorter dress will show off your gorgeous wedding shoes… The options are endless and, either way, you’ll want to have a general idea of what you want before you start shopping.

It’s easy to feel lost in jungle that is bridal wear but your new best friend here is Pinterest. An amazing way to get inspo, you’ll soon see the common features of the outfits you save to your bridal board. Then, when you visit the brilliant bridal boutiques of the northeast, this personal research will also really help you and your expert adviser to get started.

Altering before hitting the altar

You’ve found ‘The One’… Congratulations! But the work often isn’t done at this stage. Alterations will be the next step, and this is where your outfit will go from gorgeous to absolutely breathtaking. Maybe the hem needs shortened or the waist taken in to really hug your figure? Check out the endless expertise available locally and you’ll be comfortable and stunning in no time.

Boundlessly bespoke

Wait – let’s rewind. Had endless bridal boutique visits and still not had that magical moment? Or perhaps you want to break the conventions and go your own way? Or have you fallen in love with some aspects of a few different dresses?

We have good news – you could design your glorious gown! Talented northeast dressmakers are here and ready to make your dreams come true with their extensive knowledge. A great way for you to have a personal and bespoke dress (or another type of outfit), this special, personal experience does need some time – make sure you plan ahead to avoid any mishaps.

Heeling power

Channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw and make your footwear a real priority. Everyone’s favourite shoe-a-holic may have preferred Manolo Blahniks and Louboutins with heels higher than the Empire State Building but if you prefer flats, shoes can still elevate your outfit and make it reach new heights! From engraved soles to custom-made bridal Converse, you make the rules here.

Shoes can really personalise your look and give a nod to things important to you and your relationship. If you want a pop of colour, how about making your heels the ‘something blue’? Need a bright idea for your ‘something old’? Get creative with some lace from a loved one’s wedding dress (with permission first, of course!) and decorate your footwear. A perfect way to celebrate someone who’s been with you every step of your life.

Various veils

Just as there are endless styles of outfits for your nuptials, your choices in veils are equally big. But first – do you definitely want a veil? Traditionally worn by a bride to protect her from evil spirts stealing her happiness and staining her purity, today’s veils are a powerful accessory to enhance the bridal look. Regardless of your religious or spiritual beliefs, a beautiful veil can give your look a divine and classic feel. From captivating cathedral-length to bold blusher style, veils come in all sorts of designs. Love lace but not on your dress? A Spanishstyle mantilla veil is the perfect alternative or for added drama, a completely solid lacey one. If you’re all about glitz and glam, go for jewelled details, glitter threading and a tiara to top the look off.

Extraordinary embellishments

Everything essential sorted for your bridal look but still feel like something’s missing? Tiaras, as mentioned above, can be a spectacular centrepiece if you want to royally roll up to the altar whilst a little charm can be added by hiring a local sewing service to add embroidery or pearls. A snowy wedding might be like something out of a Christmas movie but winter wonderland can also be cold. Prepare for the Scottish weather while adding a fashionable piece or two – a pair of gloves will keep your paws warm and add some vintage elegance whilst a chic cape will take you back to Old Hollywood glamour. Go for a (faux) fur jacket or shawl and watch your inner Audrey, Marilyn or Grace appear!

Not-so-unmentionables

Especially important if you’re rocking a strapless gown or something tight-fitting, putting thought into your wedding lingerie is a must. There are lots of great products on the market to help solve all your bridal couture complications – and local experts to guide you through them.

Check out nude coloured non-VPL briefs, supportive shapewear and multiway bras but it’s not all about the practicalities – there are parts of your underwear where you can have a bit more fun! Garters, for example, can be customised and embroidered, and if you choose blue thread, you’ve got your ‘something blue’ covered!

Another fun extra is matching silky robes for you and your ‘I do crew’. Great props for some candid photos of you all getting ready in the morning, they’re also a cute keepsake from your special day.

A few more tips and tricks

• While you might want to wear your full glam to go your dress shopping, makeup and fake tan can easily stain dresses. Please be mindful.

• Heels are amazing and add some height to your frame but make sure you feel comfortable walking in your shoes and that they aren’t unbearably high for you.

• Another sole-related issue… blisters. We all have those shoes that just always hurt, so make sure they’re not invited to your wedding.

Try out the prosects and make sure your final footwear choice is worn in properly before your big day.

• To keep your special outfit prim and proper after the wedding, you’ll want to give it the best conditions to be preserved. Talk to your bridal boutique or seamstress and they’ll tell you how to take care of your own little piece of fashion history. ♥
