Lyndsey & Andrew

at Waterside

After New Zealander Andrew popped the question atop a mountain in Japan, there was no time wasted in venuehunting as his fiancée’s dad was crafting the perfect place from scratch back in Aberdeen. Now, as Waterside takes its place as one of the northeast’s most exciting new venues, bride Lindsey talks us through their epic summer celebration…

“We always wanted to put up a marquee and get married on my parents’ farm and, fortunately, they’d started landscaping Waterside in 2019. Our wedding was perfectly timed for the grand opening. Next up was the dress – I’d set my heart on a style I found online but trying it on, I knew it wasn’t right. Shopping didn’t take long, though. In the second shop we went to, I cried wearing the first dress they put me in… It was ‘The One’! My ivory Justin Alexander dress was made from Mikado silk, and I teamed it with a lovely detachable train and a sparkly hairpiece as I didn’t want to wear a veil. In the evening, I changed into a glittery, feathery Jovani dress – I just loved it. After shopping, I’d asked Andrew to guess what I picked, and he guessed everything right! Thankfully I managed to hide my reaction.

76 ♥ HEADER For decoration, we had white and pink flowers and kept everything else simple to match. A few of the details we made ourselves – Andrew made the place names with his 3D printer, and we made the drinks menus and table name cards together. I did the candles for the tables and Andrew’s parents made the cake with decorations from New Zealand, and our invitations. My brother, Melvin, made our wooden easels and Andrew’s mum created our mirrored table plan. The night before the big day we had drinks in the sun and played croquet with the family. It was a midnight finish with some questionable tan lines, but everyone had fun! In the morning my bridesmaids and I got ready in the farmhouse, sipping champagne. Meanwhile, Andrew went for a fresh haircut, and I’d arranged for his friend to collect him in his 1989 Ford Sierra, which he’d sold to him years ago. He loved the surprise.

We feel very lucky to have been the first ones to get married at Waterside!

I was driven to the wedding in the trailer of my late Granda Jim’s Massey Ferguson tractor, sounding the horn on arrival while waving to Andrew and our guests. We had a humanist ceremony outside in the sunshine and it was simply perfect. We’d written our own vows, and we laughed and cried… And so did some of the guests! Afterwards, we drank fizz and cocktails outside to the sound of The London Essentials before heading in for a delightful meal. The musicians kept playing and everyone ended up on the dancefloor before the cake had even been cut! Our first dance, which we’d choreographed to Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters and Queen’s Crazy Little Thing Called Love, was a surprise

to our guests. It was so fun and memorable. We started ballroom dancing lessons a few years ago and, despite a tad too much wine beforehand, it went smoothly! The rest of the evening was spent enjoying the dancefloor, the bar and the evening sunshine – with a barbecue, a sushi tower and an incredible firework display to keep everyone entertained. We feel very lucky to have been the first ones to get married at Waterside! ♥
